Oil enamels They are suitable for working even with resinous rocks, but they take a very long time to dry. Alkyd paints are often chosen for their low cost and ease of application, but they do have some durability issues, especially when used for exterior applications. Alkyd paint has water-repellent properties and is used on all types wooden products, dries quickly and does not absorb deeply.

Wood as a building material has many advantages that do not allow it to leave the market under the pressure of modern and technologically advanced composites and plastics. Among these advantages are affordability, environmental safety and decorative properties. All these qualities have contributed to the fact that lumber has become one of the most popular solutions for the construction of fences. For country house the presence of such a fence will certainly be optimal solution. However, the aesthetic benefits of wood after years of use outdoors are lost. Consequently, the question arises: “How to paint a wooden fence for a long time, cheaply and beautifully?” The set of requirements is somewhat contradictory, but can be achieved if you approach the matter creatively and creatively.

What compounds can be used to paint wood?

First of all, the requirements are determined that, in principle, a paint and varnish product for coating wood must meet. Taking into account the conditions under which it is used. It must be a means that can provide mechanical protection and biological protection against various insects and fungi. In addition, it must be resistant to direct sunlight, temperature and humidity changes. Now it’s worth moving on to answering the question of how to paint a wooden fence. Types of materials and painting methods are closely interrelated, but for the most part they involve the use of oil-based compositions, alkyd mixtures and acrylic products. In terms of application methods, these paints are practically no different from each other. Each of the listed mixtures can be applied with brushes, rollers, and pneumatic sprayers, if you have a suitable apparatus with a compressor. It is worth paying attention to the presence of antiseptic components in such compositions. They are useful because they provide biological protection, protecting natural wood from destruction.

Application of water-based paint

Water-based compositions are a good solution for coating wood material, but it has several limitations. It is advisable to carry out this coloring in warm weather without frost. Otherwise, there is a risk of initially obtaining a low-quality result with peeling of the applied layer. IN winter time It is recommended to use styrene-acrylic and latex paints. It cannot be said that they are distinguished by outstanding decorative effect but they are the only solution, if in winter the question arose about how to paint a wooden fence. including silicone and latex additives, they also require a special application technique. Manufacturers note in the instructions that cold period one half of the solution should be prepared for the application procedure outdoors, and the other half should be prepared at home in a warm place. It is thanks to the combined application of the same composition, but in different states, that it is possible to ensure reliable adhesion of the paint coating while maintaining a strong structure.

Oil impregnation

Thanks to oil impregnation, it is possible to maintain the basic characteristics of wood as a building material, preserving its structure. Such compositions are good because they have virtually no harmful toxic effects, unlike acrylic or alkyd paints. On the other hand, there is no need to hope for a radical change in the decorative qualities of the surface. And if the question is whether the fence is budgetary, but for a long time and without the need for a quick renewal of the layer, then it is advisable to give preference to compositions with natural ingredients. In particular, flaxseed is suitable oil remedy, providing a filtering effect from ultraviolet rays.

Products for preserving wood texture

It happens that there is no special need to maintain the technical and physical condition of the fence, and there is no need to change its appearance either. However, the wood becomes dull and loses its natural, previously noble and bright color. In this case, the optimal solution would be one aimed at maintaining the natural texture of the lumber. To do this, you can use protective and decorative impregnations that restore natural look boards It is important to take into account that the texture will be natural - the one that characterized the original appearance of the material. How to paint a wooden fence permanently, cheaply and while preserving its natural texture? The group of protective and decorative products can include impregnations, varnishes and paints.

Some modifications have no effect on changing the shade of the wood other than restoring the original color. Nitrovarnishes have a similar effect, but they are also the most toxic, so care must be taken when using such products. Typically, advice on choosing impregnation and paint for a wooden fence ignores environmental safety issues. But the main requirement for areas where they are grown cultivated plants, there will be toxic safety.

Original decorative ideas

If it was decided to stop at a complete update color range fence, then we can offer several unusual and bright ideas for painting:

  • Freestanding boards with gaps can be painted to look like little people holding hands.
  • If the boards are close to each other, then it makes sense to make an imitation of a pack of pencils - in this case, no special artistic skills are required. It is enough to draw contours for different zones and paint them in different colors.
  • Stories from famous works - fairy tales, cartoons, comics, etc. - are still relevant. You can recreate such scenes using painting templates.

Despite all the advantages of a bright fence design, it has one drawback. Such decorations require the use of durable paints and varnishes. How to paint a wooden fence for a long time, cheaply and brightly, but without the need for regular repainting? Suitable for this task colored paint oil-based, pre-laid on a high-quality primer.

Complementing the fence with other elements

Much in the design style will depend on the design of the fence itself - this aspect, in particular, will help determine the decorative elements. A universal solution may become an overlay of cuts cylindrical from logs. They can also be painted in different colors to create a mosaic effect. Interesting solution You could experiment with carved inserts, the edges of which will also be painted in different shades. Lovers of natural texture should also consider introducing green spaces. In this case, it is important to determine the combination of colors in which the wooden fence will be painted. How and with what paint to permanently decorate a fence so that it looks organic in combination with greenery? It is better to refuse a bright, saturated palette. Optimal suitable option preserving the natural or artificially created texture using the same oil composition. Acrylic and alkyd mixtures should not be used, as their toxic additives will have a harmful effect on plants.

Interior finishing is one of the final stages of construction. A large assortment of materials, colors and textures leaves the developer faced with a rather difficult choice.

When decorating a room, you should take into account its purpose, as well as the type of material from which the buildings are built. internal surfaces walls of the house.

Wooden surfaces can be coated with a layer; fortunately, the choice of this type of coating today is quite large.

However, when starting finishing, you should remember that painting wooden house Although it is, first of all, the finishing touch in interior design, surface painting also has a protective function.

The composition of antiseptics is:

  • on an organic basis,
  • on a chemical basis.

White always looks good in the house

It is better to cover wooden walls with protective compounds immediately after construction is completed, because under the influence of ultraviolet radiation the wood may darken and lose its aesthetic appeal. Return to wooden surfaces original appearance Sanding will help.

In addition, darkened areas can be bleached with special wood bleaches.

To avoid unpredictable reactions, it is better to use coatings (antiseptics or varnishes) from the same manufacturer.

If painting, or for some reason, does not suit you, you can treat the wooden surfaces inside the house or. This coating is quite durable, protects the wood well, and also looks visually very attractive. This type of wood processing is not cheap, but it also looks the part.

Painting the inside of a house: preparing surfaces

Frame house walls

Painting wooden surfaces, including linings inside the house, requires certain preparation of these same surfaces. The final result will depend on how carefully and competently the wooden surfaces are prepared for painting.

Preparing wooden walls for painting includes several stages:

  1. Cleaning surfaces with a stiff brush. At this stage, dust, dirt, oil and tar stains are removed from the wooden surface. If necessary, dirt can be cleaned with sandpaper.
  2. large holes, cracks, depressions.
  3. Coating wood with transparent or.
  4. Sanding surfaces to ensure better adhesion of paint to wood. You can use a grinder or sandpaper. Using a grinding machine significantly reduces time and labor costs.
  5. Painting a house with paint or.

Varnishing wooden surfaces

Wood varnish can be completely transparent or tinted. For interior work It is better to give preference to varnish coatings without a strong artificial odor of solvents.

Most often, alcohol or alcohol based varnishes are used to paint surfaces inside the house. water based, as well as anhydrous polyurethane, alkyd and acrylic.

When applying coatings, you should follow the technology and follow the instructions on the packaging.

Painting with paint

The main requirements for topcoat paints used for the interior treatment of house walls are their safety for health, absence of a strong odor and quick drying. Water-based and acrylic paints, as well as paints based on natural oils, meet these requirements.

Paints can be translucent, as well as covering ones, which completely hide the structure of the wood.

General rules for painting wooden surfaces inside the house:

  1. Ventilate the room during work.
  2. Choose for interior painting warm season.
  3. Before starting work, mix the paint thoroughly.
  4. Apply coating thin layer, avoiding the formation of smudges.
  5. The direction of movement of the brush is longitudinal.
  6. Each subsequent layer is applied after completely dry previous one.

IN
During painting work, it is convenient to use compressors for painting a house or a spray gun for painting a house. Although traditional brushes and rollers have not been canceled either.

Wooden houses are still popular today. They are environmentally friendly, relatively inexpensive, and thanks to modern protective compounds also durable. It doesn't matter what kind building materials a building has been erected - timber, logs or laminated timber, external facades require protective coating and treatment with antiseptics. This applies not only to new houses, but also to old ones that require renovation. This article will talk about how to paint correctly wooden house outside.

Next, we will consider in detail the reasons why it is necessary to restore the paint and varnish coating of a wooden house on the outside, the types of compositions that are suitable for external work on wood, and the technology for painting the outside of a wooden house with your own hands.

Causes of wood aging

Wood is a material with a living structure. Even a growing tree ages and becomes rotten over time, but in a felled tree these processes occur much faster. Untreated material loses its original luster in just one season, becoming gray. Therefore, to maintain an aesthetic appearance and to protect the wood itself, such houses require regular treatment.

  • Atmospheric influence. This is sun, rain and temperature changes. They make the structure wooden facade rougher, reducing elasticity and changing its color from yellow to gray. Due to frequent expansion and contraction with changes in humidity, cracks appear, aggravating the aging process.
  • Rot and mold. They occur in places where greatest number moisture - in cracks, over time, spreading to the entire surface. Mold is easy to notice even in the initial stages, since most often it is a different formation of gray-blue color, sometimes black. These stains do not greatly affect the quality of the wood structure, but are harmful to health. But the further decay caused by them is already dangerous and requires immediate intervention in the form of painting with special compounds.

  • Bark beetles. They can even appear in new houses if the wane was not properly removed during construction or if low-quality material was used (for example, for roof sheathing). They can spoil wood unnoticed for many years. It is very difficult to get rid of them.

Advice: it is especially important to take care of high-quality protection of the facade of a wooden house if it is located near a large body of water or near highways with heavy traffic.

Choosing a paint color for your home's exterior

This important question, because the chosen color will influence the mood and satisfaction from the work done. The most convenient way to do this is directly in the store, where samples of wood painted in different shades are presented. When ordering paint online, the monitor may distort the actual color.

Browsing through color options wooden buildings in the magazine, there is often a feeling of delight, however, when choosing a color for your home, most people reach a dead end, not knowing what exactly to choose. A few tips will help here:

  • First, you should decide whether the entire house will be repainted or just its individual elements. In the latter case, the color of the dye should be in harmony with the existing tone;
  • some cottage communities require that the houses be similar in appearance, which means that the color should be combined with the neighboring houses;
  • the color of the composition applied to wood may vary greatly under artificial lighting of the store and under street light. Therefore, many consultants recommend purchasing a small jar of dye (often, upon request, I can tint a very small volume especially for the customer) and paint some element on the facade. This will allow you to accurately decide on the option.

When choosing a shade for your home, you need to take into account the surrounding environment. For example, in a pine forest, houses with warm shades wood facades, and for a light birch grove it is better to choose gray tones in the Scandinavian style.

Of the basic rules, it is worth remembering the main thing - light shades, and especially White color, visually increase the size of a wooden cottage, but dark colors on the contrary, they decrease.

Choosing paint for painting a house

Despite the fact that the modern construction market is filled with all kinds of paint and varnish products for wood, the choice of its characteristics is quite poor. Despite the fact that some formulations are widely advertised, while others are practically unknown, their components are similar. Behind last decades no fundamentally new coloring compositions have appeared, for example the classic Oil paint The famous Tikkurila brand has been produced without significant changes for more than 70 years. This suggests that despite the promising advertising of new dyes about unprecedented longevity, they should not be taken at face value.

  • Oil paints for wood. Most often it is more a budget option for painting the wooden facade of a house. Their main advantage is that they are able to penetrate quite deeply into the wood structure, making it resistant to negative influence atmospheric conditions. But in order for the house to always look aesthetically pleasing, this coating requires updating every 5 years or more often, depending on the conditions of the region. Another drawback is low resistance to ultraviolet radiation. This means that the south side of the building will quickly lose color saturation (of course, this only applies to bright colors). Drying oil-based compositions take quite a long time to dry. Even in sunny and warm weather this takes several hours. Therefore, to prevent dust from sticking to the new facades, you need to choose calm weather for work.
  • Acrylate paints for wood. This best option dye for the wooden facade of the house. This is primarily due to their ability to create a reliable vapor-permeable coating. That is, after application, a layer is formed that can breathe, just like wood. In addition, even after hardening, alkyd paints remain flexible enough not to crack when the wood dries out seasonally. All this allows you to extend performance characteristics up to 8-10 years without the need for new repairs.

  • Covering antiseptic for wood. They are based on an acrylate-alkyd composition. This is a relatively recently introduced type of product, but with a number of advantages due to which it is gaining popularity. This composition can give cheap wood the appearance of an expensive material. This allows you to save money during construction when you want to achieve a respectable result inexpensively. In addition, such antiseptics retain their appearance for more than 10 years without tinting.
  • Varnishes, stains, azures. If expensive materials were chosen for the construction of a wooden house, then you should opt for a colorless and durable coating. They will give the surface gloss, without distorting the color, but only slightly change the shade and fully show the beautiful texture natural material. If desired, they can be tinted, in which case the color saturation will depend on the number of layers applied.

When asking the question of what is the best way to paint a house, most rely on the price/quality ratio. So you can make a rough overview of the most famous manufacturers:

  • Budget paints. These include economy options, the cost of which does not exceed 100-150 rubles/kg. These are “Senezh”, “Aquatex”, “Texturol”.
  • Average price category. Their price ranges from 250-350 rubles/kg. The most famous are Tikkurila and Belinka.
  • Premium paint- from 400 rub/kg and above. These are foreign manufacturers such as Woodwork and Johnestones.

  • If you wear makeup new house, then the choice of paint is not limited in any way and depends only on the preferences of the owner. It’s another matter if they are produced renovation work previously painted wooden facade. In this case, it must be painted with the same composition that was applied before. But there is a small nuance: if the wall was painted with oil paint, then acrylic paint can be applied to it after preliminary treatment.
  • If the work was previously carried out by other owners, then first you need to determine the type of paint. Using a sharp stationery knife, cut off a piece of the composition or make an incision and look: if it breaks and crumbles easily, then it is oil paint, if it has enough elasticity to roll into a roll, it is acrylate paint.
  • It is better to paint on a cloudy day, when there is no bright sun, but no rain is expected. This is due to the fact that when direct sunlight hits a freshly painted wooden facade, the paint may dry unevenly, forming streaks.

  • You should beware of purchasing products that have appeared on the construction market only recently. Even if the manufacturer specifies guarantee period up to 15-20 years, it has not yet been possible to test this in practice. But in any case, the manufacturer indicates it taking into account the fact that the wood has been previously treated with antiseptics and preparations and primed. Without this, the service life is sharply reduced.
  • When purchasing, it is also important to pay attention to coverage characteristics. That is, the consumption of the composition per m2, so often a jar with a smaller volume can cover large area than a cheaper analogue. This means that it is not always worth focusing on the price parameter “rub/l.”

Painting wooden houses. Preparatory work

  • Before you start painting the outside of a wooden house, you need to carry out preliminary preparation walls For a new home, they consist of applying an antiseptic and primer. But when renovating an old building, there will be significantly more work: sanding to good wood and processing cracks. These procedures will protect against possible unevenness or peeling of old and new paint from each other.
  • The problem of the majority wooden houses is their seasonal “movement”, leading to cracking of the paint if it does not have sufficient elasticity. Moisture easily penetrates into the cracks that form, which leads to further destruction. paint coating and the wood itself. In addition, mold that forms in such places has a detrimental effect on human health, causing pulmonary diseases. The only exception is houses made of laminated veneer lumber; thanks to the production technology, they do not form cracks and painting is needed only for aesthetic purposes.
  • Therefore, first, with a metal spatula, all exfoliated areas and those that can be easily cleaned are roughly removed. After this, using a grinder with a special disk, clean the surface to light and clean wood. This guarantees the durability of the repair.

  • The easiest and cheapest way to treat mold cracks is with a spray bottle of regular white, which is sold at any hardware store. The concentration is taken at 100%, that is, without dilution with water. Due to the pungent odor, even outdoor work must be carried out in a respirator, safety glasses and gloves.

How to properly paint the outside of an old wooden house

  • Sometimes, after complete sanding, the surface of the wood has many nicks and irregularities. It is advisable to smooth them with coarse sandpaper. Again, these cleaning discs are sold for grinders, which greatly speeds up and simplifies the process. As a result, it turns out to achieve a fairly smooth surface.
  • The next step is to apply the primer. Today, you can find special primer compositions for wood on sale that already have antiseptic additives. Thus, the work is cut in half. Doing this with a brush takes a very long time; it is much more convenient to use a spray gun. In order not to buy it for a one-time job, you can rent it. It is recommended to apply it in two layers.

Tip: for a more saturated color as a result of staining, add required quantity color scheme so that it is as close as possible in color to the paint itself. So, if the house is painted in grey colour, then the primer should be gray. It is best to do this in the store where the composition was purchased.

  • Painting begins only if the wood is completely dry. After opening a new jar, mix the composition thoroughly for a couple of minutes until it becomes homogeneous. For work, choose a wide brush with fine bristles. It is best to buy a varnish brush; it will allow you to apply the paint more evenly. Work begins from top to bottom, carefully ensuring that no leaks form. The strokes are made horizontally, along the grain of the wood.

  • When working with a spray gun, the same requirements are followed. But with it, the paint goes on more evenly, and the consumption is reduced.
  • As a rule, applying one layer cannot avoid noticeable smudges, and the coating itself is not strong enough. For exterior work, in addition to the primer layer, it is recommended to apply at least three layers of paint.

Painting wood: the final result depends on surface preparation

Probably, many of you think that the solution to the question of how to paint a tree is frivolous, and almost everyone can cope with it. Yes, this one is true if we are talking about clumsy work with a brush, the result of which can be seen on almost everyone. If you want to get a really high-quality result, characterized by a smooth surface and depth of color, then you will have to try very, very hard. A significant role in the process of obtaining such surfaces is played by preparatory work, which are a cycle of sanding, priming and painting.

At the first stage, the purchased rail the right size I had to clean it thoroughly with the help of a large abrasive mesh 80 grit. The purpose of such rough processing was to eliminate flaws made in the workshop during the sawing process of the slats. After the coarse emery had done its job and gave the surface of the future platbands an even plane, the abrasive had to be replaced with a finer one (240) and the job completed, giving the surface the necessary roughness. Now you can apply the coloring composition!

How and how to paint wood: paint or stain

There are two main compositions with which you can give wood the desired color - these are paints and. The use of one or another material is entirely determined by the desired end result. Stains, as a rule, emphasize the structure of wood. This happens due to the ability of wood to absorb it in different ways, and paints, for the most part, hide the structure of the wood. There are, however, transparent paints that form a thin colored film on the surface of the wood, but I still decided to go the old route and use stain to paint the wood. It is now available in a wide variety and can have any color - it is quite easy to purchase red, black, blue, and even white stain on the market.

I decided for myself the question of what is the best way to paint wood. The only thing left to do is to apply stain to the surface of the future platbands. It turned out to be easy. First, I had to remove the fine dust remaining from the sanding process from the surface of the wood and apply the stain using a brush. It dries quite quickly, especially if the weather is sunny outside. With an interval of half an hour, the process of painting, or rather impregnating the wood with stain, had to be repeated, since the surface turned out to be uneven. After the second stain, everything fell into place, and the wood acquired a rich color.

How to paint wood photo

The question of what paint and how to paint the wood has been resolved, now it’s time for the most difficult part - varnishing and giving the product gloss and depth of color.

Painting wood with varnish: the secrets of a deep mirror surface

In order to subsequently have less trouble with sanding the varnish, it is better to apply it using a sprayer, but in the absence of one, you can get by with a brush or roller. I preferred a brush, and with its help I covered the platbands with a thick layer of varnish, so that it flowed off the rail and could independently accept flat surface. I covered it and forgot about it for four days - after all, the layer of varnish is thick, and in order to carry out further work it must dry completely.

How to varnish wood photo

Four days later I armed myself again grinder and bought sandpaper with grits of 400, 800, 1000 and 2000. To begin with, I used the first one and ensured that the varnished surface became completely matte - not a single glossy dot remained, indicating pits on the surface. Then, replacing the sandpaper with a finer grain (800), I repeated the processing, thereby reducing the surface roughness. We had to do the same with all the other abrasive skins - in turn, the processing was carried out first with thousandth, and then with two thousandth paper. As I read on one forum, such grinding is necessary in order to get rid of minor scratches, left by any abrasive material.

Sanding after painting wood photo

The next step in deciding how to varnish wood is to apply a second layer of varnish. Here I no longer varnished the product with a thick layer, but covered it with a thin layer using the same brush. But first I cleaned the sanded surface from fine dust - first I wiped it off with a damp cloth, and then additionally treated it with a solvent. I can’t say why I did this, but it seemed to me that with its help it was possible to remove much more dust and dirt from the product. And again, a break in work until the final varnish coating has completely dried. Two days later, sanding the surface using 800, 1000 and then 2000 grit sandpaper was repeated.

Final processing: surface polishing

You can't do it without a special tool, or rather, you can't do it here - I had to purchase a polishing sponge and a felt wheel. In addition, I needed a car polish kit, which includes a scratch remover and a finishing polish. Polishing is carried out in stages - first using a felt wheel and a scratch remover, and then a polishing sponge and finishing polish.

Varnishing wood and processing it photo

All in all, final finishing I even liked the platbands, and after a few hours I sat and admired the result.

Painting wood with your own hands photo

Be that as it may, painting the wood turned out to be quite complex process– despite the fact that I was satisfied with the final result, any professional will find flaws in my work. What a professional, I can see them perfectly well myself - either due to lack of experience, or as a result of using unprofessional equipment, small defects are visible deep in the varnish layer. Most likely, these are specks of dust and small debris, which I was not able to completely get rid of in outdoor production conditions.
