Paper wallpaper for painting

General information

You should not think that paintable paper wallpaper is the same as ordinary thin paper wallpaper, which was previously the most common and were used for gluing walls in almost every home. Nowadays, technology has gone far ahead - paper wallpapers are produced at the consumer's choice different types, seriously different from each other both in characteristics and in price.

There are two main varieties on sale paper wallpaper for painting - two- and three-layer canvases.

Prices for wallpaper for painting

  • Double-layer wallpaper consists of two paper layers glued together. As a rule, this type of canvas has a small or uniform relief that does not require matching the pattern.

Wallpaper is also widely used with a deeper embossed volumetricsystematized a pattern that requires careful adjustment when joining the paintings on the wall.

Deep relief allows you to create complex coloring using one, two or even more colors, which are applied in turn. The application of several paints is carried out using different techniques, depending on what effect is planned to be obtained as a result.

A three-dimensional pattern is applied to two-layer wallpaper using the embossing method. The manufacturing technology is that two paper sheets glued together are passed through special rollers with a relief applied to them, which leaves its imprint on the paper. The outer side of the wallpaper has a protruding relief, while the wrong side of the pattern is concave.

  • Three-layer paper wallpaper, at first sight, They are no different from two-layer ones, but they are noticeably heavier in weight. This type of canvas is equipped with a third, reverse, smooth layer of paper, which covers the convexity of the relief pattern. This back layer is designed to improve the adhesion properties of the canvases to the wall surface, which greatly simplifies and speeds up the gluing of the material. In addition, the relief practically does not wrinkle when smoothing the canvas. Three-layer wallpaper can be coated with more layers of paint. They are more securely held on the wall and look very presentable.

Since this type of material is thicker, it can produce more complex relief designs that require alignment when gluing them.

A very interesting option for three-layer paper wallpapers are canvases, inside of which there are small wood shavings, which give the surface a relief pattern. The design of the wallpaper will depend on what shape these “foreign inclusions” will have.

When making this original material, sawdust is applied to the glue, distributed over the surface of the bottom layer of wallpaper, then covered with an outer sheet and pressed between the paper layers. Such wallpaper has a chaotic pattern, so it does not require adjustment, which allows you to use the entire roll with virtually no residue.

The advantage of this type of material is its ability to hide small imperfections in the walls very well. However, gluing such canvases is still much more difficult, since they differ from usual options more massive. Therefore, to securely hold them on vertical wall surfaces, it is necessary to use glue with increased adhesive properties.

The main supplier of paper wallpaper for painting to the Russian market is the German company Erfurt, which produces various versions of the material, both in terms of structural characteristics and their decorative qualities. It's interesting that " seniority"The corporation has been in this field for more than 90 years.

More complex options have plant reliefs on their surface, geometric shapes or ornaments that look like stucco. They are considered an elite material, and in certain cases are even made to order.

Unlike ordinary glass wallpaper, those intended for painting have a higher density and a more pronounced texture, which can be perfectly used for applying multi-colored finishes.

Fiberglass wallpaper goes on sale not only in white, but also in tinted form. Therefore, you can choose the option that is most suitable for the interior being designed, with the expectation that during the next renovation the walls can be “refreshed” with paint of the same or a different color.

  • Smooth fiberglass wallpaper is intended for leveling and strengthening damaged wall surfaces - this material is called “painting fiberglass” or “cobweb”. These fabrics are glued if it is necessary to obtain an almost smooth surface with a barely noticeable relief of randomly intertwined fibers.

“Gossamer” perfectly masks small flaws in the form of drops or depressions, creating durable surface, quite resistant to mechanical stress. This type of wallpaper does not have the correct pattern, therefore it does not require adjustment when gluing, and is the most affordable of all fiberglass decorative materials.

  • Fiberglass is a non-flammable material, so they are used to cover premises of escape routes fire danger in public buildings. Wallpaper is resistant to open flames, does not support combustion, and when heated does not emit toxic decomposition products.

  • The moisture resistance of glass wallpaper makes it possible to use it for cladding bathroom walls.
  • Fiberglass fabric does not attract or accumulate dust and is resistant to chemical substances, therefore they can be subjected to wet cleaning using household chemical solutions. In addition, high-quality wallpapers are hypoallergenic, which allows them to be used in any living space.
  • The material is resistant to ultraviolet radiation, so it can be used to decorate rooms with windows facing sunny side. Fiberglass wallpaper does not lose its original qualities throughout the entire period of operation.

TO shortcomings fiberglass material includes the following qualities:

  • High enough cost of wallpaper. However, judging by the abundance of clearly expressed advantages of this finish, their high price is completely justified.

  • Gluing glass wallpaper requires special glue, the price of which can significantly exceed the cost of regular glue. wallpaper glue. And his consumption is also considerable.
  • The difficulty of removing old fiberglass wallpaper from the walls if you want to change the decoration of the room. Due to the fact that the fibers are impregnated with modified starch, it, when combined with the adhesive mass and coloring composition, creates a high adhesive ability of the material and gives the surface high strength.
  • When cutting and gluing wallpaper on walls, it is necessary to use personal protection in the form of a respirator and rubber gloves. The fact is that when cutting sheets, microscopic particles of glass fibers are formed, which can cause irritation on the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract and on open areas of the skin. After correct gluing such emission of microscopic debris becomes impossible.

On Russian market Glass wallpaper for painting is presented by both domestic and foreign manufacturers. The most popular of them are the brands “Wellton”, “Oscar”, “Nortex”, “Optima”, “Vitrulan” and others. Wallpapers are presented in a wide range of external textures, relief patterns, and in various shades. Detailed Specifications can be found in online stores that sell similar products.

Non-woven wallpaper for painting

What are non-woven wallpapers?

Another type of finishing material for painting is non-woven wallpaper. They are widely popular because they have quite affordable price and have a number of excellent performance qualities.

Non-woven material is a non-woven material made from cellulose fibers that have undergone special preparation, laid in several layers and pressed together. Non-woven fabric is a very durable material. Suffice it to say that tailors use it to strengthen and shape the sides and lapels of jackets and coats.

This group of wallpapers for painting can be divided into two types:

  • Fully non-woven fabrics, where both the base and the decorative layer are one material.
  • Combined option - the base is non-woven, and the decorative surface

Non-woven wallpaper for painting is most often produced in white or yellowish color. However, other options that have the original tint are also available for sale. That is, the wallpaper is matched in color to the selected room design, and if it changes, or if the color is simply tired, the papered walls can be easily repainted.

Non-woven wallpaper can be divided according to the texture of its surface - into smooth and embossed canvases.

Prices for non-woven wallpaper

non-woven wallpaper

  • Embossed non-woven wallpaper intended for painting usually does not have deep three-dimensional patterns. Most often this is an imitation of fabric weaving, decorative plaster, the structure of tree bark, the texture of snake skin, geometric patterns and more.

This embossed version of the wallpaper allows you to diversify the use of paint. That Yes, can be painted not the entire relief in one color, but apply one or two shades, visually increasing the volume of the picture.

  • The smooth type of wallpaper is called repair or painting interlining - this is a thin single-layer fabric made of cellulose fibers. This material is divided according to its density, which can vary from 65 to 160 g/m². The masking quality of the material depends on this parameter, so the higher the density of the canvas, the more more possibilities mask small surface imperfections.

This version of wallpaper is easy to paste and paint, and you can repaint it up to 10 times. However, if embossed wallpaper can hide quite serious flaws in the wall, as well as its color, then the repair canvases are almost translucent, and the surface of the base will be clearly visible through them, so it will have to be well prepared before gluing them. This quality, by the way, is skillfully used by some experienced craftsmen to create a unique “internally tinted backlight” effect.

Well-prepared walls covered with this material and then painted with the chosen paint look quite impressive. In addition, we note that such gluing is perfect for leveling walls for further artistic painting or for creating a panel.

  • Combined wallpaper, in which a vinyl decorative layer is applied to a non-woven base, is distinguished by a very wide variety of textured patterns.

The relief of this type of wallpaper often also allows for multi-color painting and giving it a 3D effect. True, to carry out such finishing you must have certain artistic skills.

This variety also has a significant “minus”. If the interlining is vapor permeable material, then vinyl no longer possesses this quality. And this, in turn, means that the overall vapor permeability is significantly reduced. This circumstance can lead to the creation on the walls of a favorable environment for the appearance of mold, which will quickly destroy the finish.

In addition, the vinyl layer is not resistant to mechanical stress even after painting. Therefore, it is not recommended to stick such wallpaper in rooms with high traffic intensity or if playful pets live in the apartment or house, which can “test the strength of the finish” with their claws.

Advantages and disadvantages of non-woven wallpaper for painting

It makes sense to consider the “pros” and “cons” of non-woven fabrics for painting, since you need to know what can be expected from them when gluing and during operation.

Disadvantages This type of wall covering can be called the following:

  • Wallpaper is enough heavy, therefore, when gluing walls using wide rolls (more than 1000 mm), it is often very difficult to do without an assistant.
  • Non-woven fabric has a distinctly porous structure, so it loses some of its qualities after the second or third dyeing.
  • Wallpaper does not accumulate dust in its structure, but it is well attracted to the surface of the relief.

Non-woven wallpaper is most often left for painting sold in rolls, having a width of 530 or 1060 mm, and a length of 10.06 and 25 m. However, other options are quite possible. The cost of the material varies in a very wide range, from 790 to 3500 rubles - it depends on the manufacturer, quality, specific collection, roll size parameters, etc.

Both domestic and foreign manufacturers present their products on the Russian market - these are the companies "Marburg" and "Rasch" (Germany), "ART", "Loymina" "Elysium" and "Palitra" (Russia), "Estro" (Italy ) and many others.

A very special variety - linkrust type wallpaper

What it is?

Wallpaper of the linkrust type are canvases with a pronounced decorative, most often floral, relief that imitates the stucco molding that previously decorated walls and ceilings. With the advent of simpler finishing options, stucco, due to the complexity of its creation, was gradually “pushed to the sidelines.” But with the advent of linkrust wallpaper, this trend was given a “second wind”.

Stucco molding is traditionally used in classic interiors and gives the room a luxurious appearance. Therefore, in recent years, interest in linkrust wallpaper has returned, and they are increasingly used in interior design.

This type of material is made exclusively from environmentally friendly raw materials, and all manufacturers adhere to the classical technology of manufacturing canvases.

The basis for linkrust wallpaper is thick paper, and the three-dimensional pattern, which is the decorative outer layer, is created from a mixture of wood flour, rosin, wax, chalk, linseed oil and other natural ingredients. The mass made from the indicated components is applied to the prepared paper base, and then the canvases are rolled with stamp rollers with a certain relief. The next step The blades are cut to standard sizes, after which the material is sent for drying, which can take up to two months.

Thanks to the peculiarities of raw materials and manufacturing technology, the canvases acquire high strength, and after gluing them to the wall, this quality only increases over time. Therefore, the durability of such finishing material is quite great. For example, in many English houses The decoration that was glued to the walls more than a hundred years ago is still in use.

At making the right choice paint and its proper application to a relief surface, this process can be carried out countless times. Thus, the appearance of the room, thanks to changing the color of the relief details, can be changed to suit the new design.

As a rule, all the walls of the room are not completely covered with this wallpaper. They are usually used as decorative panel, placing it in separate areas, or placing it in the form of a wide border framing the finishing with other materials.

Classic linkrust wallpaper initially has a light beige color, which does not change the shades of the paint applied on top. However, today wallpaper is also produced in tinted versions, which do not require initial decoration. If desired, they can be repainted even after several years.

Advantages and disadvantages of linkrust wallpaper

Like other finishing materials, linkrusta wallpaper has its positive and negative qualities, which you need to know about if the question arises about purchasing such a finish.

TO positive aspects This material includes the following:

  • Environmentally friendly canvases - thanks to the use of exclusively natural raw materials.
  • Flaxseed oil, which is part of the decorative layer, acts as a natural antiseptic that prevents the appearance and development of mold.
  • The ability to “breathe” also contributes to the durability of the finish and eliminates the risk of biological formations harmful to both the material and humans.
  • Durability, proven over decades of use of the finish.
  • Resistance to mechanical damage, as well as to deformation during shrinkage of the structure or to the appearance of cracks on the walls.
  • The moisture resistance of the canvases allows them to be used for finishing bathrooms.
  • Easy care of the finished surface. You can carefully vacuum it or remove the dust first with a dry and then a damp soft cloth.
  • The ability to radically change the appearance of the interior using coloring. Moreover, paint can be applied using several different techniques.
  • Linkrusta wallpaper can be used to decorate not only walls, but also ceilings and even furniture.

Disadvantages linkrust can be considered some points that encourage many owners of houses or apartments to refuse to use this wallpaper in interiors:

  • High cost of material. Thus, the price for rolls measuring 533 × 10000 mm can reach up to 19–20 thousand rubles. And for curbs with a width of 268, 275, 282, 270 and a length of 10,000 mm - up to 14 thousand.
  • High cost of installation and painting of the decorated surface.
  • The high complexity of gluing the material to walls and ceilings and its further decoration. It is extremely difficult to achieve high-quality results on your own without experience. And this predetermines the high cost of such finishing work performed by professionals.
  • Linkrust instability to low temperatures. When strongly cooled, the material becomes brittle and easily damaged even without the strongest mechanical impact.

On the Russian market, linkrust wallpaper is presented by English manufacturers, who guarantee the quality and durability of the material. Canvases can be ordered online or purchased in specialized stores in large cities.

What compositions are used to paint wallpaper?

A few words must be said about paint and varnish products, which can be used to decorate wallpaper intended for painting. The fact is that by using the type of paint that is not suitable for such work, you can ruin an expensive finishing material or, “if you’re lucky,” you simply don’t get the desired effect.

For all types of wallpaper, light water-based paints are used - these can be water-dispersion or water-emulsion suspensions. Today, the construction market offers a very wide range of such compositions on polyvinyl acetate, acrylic or silicone bases. Water-soluble compositions do not contain complex organic aggressive compounds that can not only negatively affect the material being painted, but also emit toxic fumes harmful to human health.

It is best to use waterproof suspensions after final drying, which allow wet cleaning of surfaces without damaging the aesthetics of the finish or reducing its durability.

Most often, a white base paint is purchased, and one or more colors are purchased for it, which will help achieve the desired color or shade. If you choose this tinting option, you must knead immediately required amount paint of the chosen color, since if there is not enough paint for the entire surface, it is unlikely to be possible to create exactly the same tone.

Alkyd or alkyd wallpapers are not used for painting wallpaper. oil paints, which have a viscous, dense structure and a sharp, unpleasant odor, which indicates the presence of organic solvents in their composition. These types of paints and varnishes form a rather thick layer on the surface, covering the natural structure of the wallpaper, reducing its decorative effect and impairing its ability to “breathe”.

It is recommended that when purchasing wallpaper and compositions for coloring it, create at least a rough sketch of their decoration. Moreover, it's better to make several possible options. Such a “draft” will help not only compare and choose the best one, but also not make mistakes when applying paint.

Important information about waterborne finishing paints

In order to achieve a positive result in the final painting of pasted surfaces, it is necessary to know at least in general terms the characteristics of the compositions used for this purpose. Detailed information about this is contained in a special publication on our portal.

*******

Now, having received information about the types of wallpaper for painting, you can decide on their choice, which will directly depend on financial capabilities, the desired effect and methods of final decoration. The most affordable option, both in terms of cost and work, is non-woven or combined (non-woven and vinyl) wallpaper. They are easy to glue and you can paint them yourself using a regular paint roller.

Remains unclear question– how much wallpaper will you need to purchase to cover a particular room with it? Therefore, as promised, we are posting an appendix to the article, in which we will touch on this problem in more detail.

Find out the available methods from our new article on our portal.

APPENDIX: How much wallpaper should I purchase per room?

First - an online calculator, and below - the necessary explanations and recommendations for carrying out calculations.

Paintable wallpaper not only gives the walls an interesting texture, but also provides scope for designer imagination - they can be repainted many times. How to understand the types of such wall covering and choose the wallpaper that suits you, we will tell you in our article.

Paintable wallpaper (textured or smooth) is very functional: you just need to select and stick it once, and you can change the design of the room many times without much hassle. This type of wall covering can be repainted several times using different kinds and shades of colors. Their main difference from conventional wallpaper is their increased moisture resistance and durability. Wallpaper intended for subsequent painting is usually white or beige. Some manufacturers also produce models with patterns.

Store shelves offer a fairly large selection of structural wallpaper. These are mostly imported products:

  1. German brands AS CREATION, Erfurt, Marburg, Erismann.
  2. Swedish wallpaper from Tasso Glass and Mitex.
  3. French company Mermet.
  4. Belgian company ARTE.

The Russian factories “Palitra”, “Art” and the Ukrainian wallpaper “Versailles” are also well known. Wallpaper prices domestic production, as a rule, lower than that of imported analogues. However, this practically does not affect the quality - most factories use imported equipment and modern wallpaper manufacturing technologies.

Characteristics and types of wallpaper for painting

As a rule, wallpaper intended for painting is produced in white. Based on the type of base, the following types are distinguished:

  1. Fiberglass (gossamer).
  2. Non-woven.
  3. Paper (duplex and triplex).

Let us consider in detail the features of each type.

Fiberglass wallpaper

Fiberglass wallpaper is an improved and modernized version of the painting canvas (“cobweb”). Their basis is the thinnest fiberglass threads, stretched at a temperature of about 1200 ° C. Wallpaper is made using the weaving method: in the case of fiberglass, the surface remains smooth; for glass wallpaper, a certain texture or decor is selected in a woven or linen design. This wall covering contains dolomite, quartz sand, lime and soda. All components are completely environmentally friendly and safe for human health.

The absence of harmful chemical additives is just one of the list of advantages of glass wallpaper, which also includes:

  1. High biological stability - there is no nutrient medium on the surface suitable for the growth of mold or mildew.
  2. Resistance to mechanical damage - the density of the material does not allow the wall covering to be torn or scratched.
  3. Chemical resistance - wallpaper can be washed with any disinfectants, not to mention standard detergents.
  4. Lack of static electricity - glass wallpapers do not attract dust, which means they will not have to be cleaned so often.
  5. Increased vapor permeability - the structure of the fibers is reminiscent of weaving in a sweater, the loop cells allow water vapor to pass through well, improving the microclimate.
  6. Non-flammability, confirmed by certificates, and the absence of toxic fumes upon contact with fire.
  7. Long service life - fiberglass wallpaper can be repainted up to 20 times, and the service life reaches up to 30 years.

Of course, there are some drawbacks: tiny particles of glass fibers can get on the skin and respiratory tract, causing irritation, so when working with such wallpaper it is necessary to use protective equipment.

Important: removing old glass wallpaper from walls can be very difficult, so they are most often used for finishing office premises. Can be washed using a brush and special solutions.

The American concern GLASSTEX GROUP CORP, which produces coatings for various brands. The price for the Wellton brand starts from 900 rubles per 25-meter roll and reaches the astronomical figure of 11,000 rubles per fifty-meter roll. The BauTex brand (joint production with Germany) is more affordable: here the price tag ranges from 1400-2600 rubles per 50 m.

For thrifty buyers, many manufacturers can offer second-class wallpaper - rolls of non-standard sizes with minor defects. The inclusions of defects in such twists are quite insignificant, and the price is much lower than standard rolls.

Non-woven wallpaper

Non-woven fabric is familiar to many - the dense fibrous fabric is widely used in the clothing industry for the manufacture of wear-resistant collars and sleeves. In wallpaper production, foam coating is applied to a non-woven base through a stencil, forming a textured pattern.

Non-woven wallpaper has undoubted advantages:

  1. Masking effect - thanks to the slightly stretchy base and vinyl coating, the wallpaper perfectly hides small irregularities and defects in the walls. Experts recommend this coating for new homes that are shrinking.
  2. Protective functions— sprayed vinyl provides additional noise and heat insulation.
  3. Easy to use and the most accurate fit.
  4. No harmful fumes.
  5. Service life reaches 10 years.

Non-woven wallpaper is quite capricious during the process of gluing and use - the foam coating is quite easily damaged by careless movements, so it is recommended to paint such wallpaper immediately after gluing.

Manufacturers offer several types of non-woven wallpaper:

  1. Smooth (used as a base for other coatings).
  2. Structural with vinyl coating.
  3. Paper on non-woven fabric.

Wallpaper of this type can be either white or colored (with a pattern). Both types can be repainted many times.

Prices for this wallpaper for painting can be very different, for example, the German brand “Marburg” offers wallpaper on a non-woven basis: standard sizes- from 630 rubles per roll, designer ones - costing several tens of thousands of rubles. Russian manufacturer ART and the Ukrainian Versailles supply wallpaper collections in the mid-price niche - from 600 to 1,500 rubles per roll.

Brand/manufacturer Roll length, m Roll width, m Approximate cost, rub.
Marburg Gloockler Children's Paradis 5 0,18 from 790
Marburg Andante Pria 10,05 0,53 from 890
Marburg Light Story Chateau 10,05 0,53 from 990
Marburg Domotex 10,05 0,75 from 6230

ART Economy 10 1,06 from 400
"Versailles" Eden 10 1,06 from 890
"Versailles" for children 10,05 0,053 from 650

Important: when choosing non-woven wallpaper, be sure to pay attention to the size of the rolls. For the same manufacturer, these data may differ depending on the collection.

Paper wallpaper

Paper-based wallpaper is considered the most inexpensive option, however, with proper care they will last at least 5-10 years. During the production process, the base is treated with special waterproof impregnations, thanks to which it can be repainted several times.

Particularly popular are coarse-fiber wallpapers interspersed with natural sawdust. This coating is optimal for children's rooms.

Classic Soviet version: single-layer simplex (not produced by foreign factories). The only plus: the low cost of the coating is more than offset by its fragility and unreliability. For finishing it is better to choose duplex (double layer) or triplex (triple layer). In such wallpaper, the top coating has good performance and excellent appearance.

Important: if you plan to paint paper wallpaper, it is better to give preference to vinyl-coated products.

The choice of paper wallpaper on the market is simply huge - starting from budget narrow-band options (50-60 cm wide) for 80-100 rubles per roll, ending with wide (from 1 m) rolls for 1500-2000 thousand and more. The variety of manufacturers, wallpaper models and the range in price range do not allow structuring the information into a table. Any online catalog provides from several dozen to several hundred options to choose from.

When choosing wallpaper for painting, you first need to decide three questions for yourself:

  1. For how long do you plan to hang the wallpaper? For temporary options, inexpensive paper-based wallpapers that will last from 3 to 5 years are quite suitable.
  2. How much are you willing to spend? Almost every manufacturer has economy lines and designer collections.
  3. Will you do the work yourself or will you hire specialists - if you have no experience in finishing works, it is better to give preference narrow wallpaper with high density. They are easier to join, and the likelihood of tearing a dense base is much lower.

The optimal option in terms of price/service life ratio is, of course, fiberglass coating. If you are planning a cosmetic renovation, you can opt for paper wallpaper, which can be easily hung yourself. Non-woven covering is the most expensive and labor-intensive option, which may require hiring finishers.

Painting wallpaper in your apartment is the best option for saving money and effort. This is the easiest way to do quick repair, changing the interior of housing. If you think that any canvas can be painted, then you are mistaken. On this moment There are three types of wallpaper on the market, with special qualities that are suitable for one or more paintings. They appeared in the construction industry more than 10 years ago and do not lose their popularity among consumers. We will talk about them today.

Paintable wallpaper varies depending on the material and the technique by which it is made. Today, the construction market can offer customers paper, non-woven and glass wallpaper. Perhaps the only quality that unites them is that they can be painted many times.

pros

Let's begin to consider the advantages of paper canvases, because they are the simplest and traditionally the most common. The technology by which they are produced is a combination of two layers of high-quality paper material, which is passed between rollers that create a special pattern. On one side the design is convex, and on the other it is recessed. This application option allows the image to be extruded, which guarantees its durability. Of course, smooth wallpaper is also available, without any special embossing. They also come in two layers, but their surface is white and smooth.

Although on construction market The choice of paper wallpaper is quite large; it is not always simple paper. Modern paper webs are distinguished by the fact that:

  • consist of two layers;
  • both layers are very dense;
  • between the layers there is a special filler, which consists of shavings and sawdust (it gives the surface a beautiful relief);
  • produced using the embossing method (for pronounced relief, even after a series of paintings);
  • impregnated with water-repellent agents;
  • environmentally friendly;
  • they look impressive (with the proper skill in gluing them);
  • their price is relatively low.

The second type of wallpaper, more expensive but more popular, is non-woven wallpaper. Their advantages:

  • average cost;
  • durability;
  • high quality (consist of non-woven material, which is different types fibers that the polymer binds);
  • are not deformable (they do not stretch when they get wet, they do not shrink when they dry);
  • working with them is simple and efficient;
  • they can be used in new buildings (new buildings “shrink” within a couple of years, forming small cracks on the walls - if you glue them to the walls this type wallpaper, then they will not tear themselves, and, moreover, they will not allow cracks to spread).

The third type of wallpaper intended for painting is glass wallpaper. Their advantages:

  • a durable glass thread smelted from dolomite, quartz, soda, lime, which lies under the base;
  • fairly long service life (about 30 years);
  • universal relief surface in the form of “matting”, “herringbone”;
  • easy removal of contaminants from the surface - glass wallpaper can be washed with various means if necessary.

Minuses

The disadvantages of paper wallpapers include the fact that they are difficult to work with. They should be glued extremely carefully, otherwise they can easily tear or stretch and sag.

Paper canvases can be painted a relatively small number of times (about 7), while other types are much more (about 15).

The disadvantages of non-woven wallpaper are observed when vinyl coating is used to create different figures in the pattern. Vinyl is a synthetic material that does not allow walls to breathe. It is better not to use vinyl coverings in children's and adult bedrooms.

Fiberglass wallpaper contains all the conceivable advantages of wall coverings, so their only disadvantages are high prices.

Plain or paintable wallpaper?

As you can see above, wallpaper for painting has more advantages than disadvantages. Means, regular wallpaper They are definitely inferior in terms of finishing capabilities and quality.

Here are the main reasons why you should choose paintable wallpaper:

  • the wall is given a special, pronounced texture (which after painting does not dull, but stands out and looks even better);
  • repainting, and accordingly, a change of design and mood, can be done even annually;
  • the canvases are treated with special substances during production and are waterproof (this does not affect the absorption of paint and retention of pigment);
  • paints that are intended for such wallpaper are water-based - they dry quickly, are non-toxic, and the walls do not lose the ability to “breathe” after using them;
  • after the canvases are painted, the joints between them are not noticeable at all;
  • the strip width of such wallpaper is 1.06 m (provides fewer joints);
  • color variations are very wide - from variegated, bright colors to warm, soft shades;
  • the canvases do not need to be painted if you like the original color that the canvases have upon purchase;
  • patterns also have a whole list choice - they can imitate the structure of large and small stones, fabric and other decorative elements;
  • suitable for gluing even walls that are not perfectly smooth;
  • perfectly mask a variety of defects and irregularities (especially thick and embossed ones).

Paintable canvases can serve you in their original form, and then, depending on your mood or as stains, scuffs or, for example, children’s drawings appear, they can be repainted. In addition, wallpaper acts as additional noise and heat insulation, that is, it is able to absorb sounds and retain heat.
