Calculation of drywall partitions (gypsum plasterboard): calculator. Consumption of materials for plasterboard constructions Consumption of materials per 1m2 of plasterboard ceiling

The main attribute of almost any repair, especially European-quality repair, are drywall constructions. And this is not surprising. After all, from GKL (GVL) it is currently possible to "blind" practically any partition or ceiling. For example, for a multi-level ceiling, drywall is most often used.

In addition, these structures are quickly erected and are relatively inexpensive. True, there is one minus here - a rather large nomenclature. So, if you decide to independently build partitions and a ceiling from plasterboard sheets in your apartment, and at the same time comply with all technology, then you will have to stock up on more than one type of profile and screws. You will also need dowels, reinforcing mesh, putty, primer, suspensions and connecting elements.

All this must be purchased in the required (or with a small margin) quantity for this design. And for this you need to calculate required amount drywall and profile on the ceiling or wall (partition). Therefore, for those who want to build such structures, and was created this page, which shows an example consumption of materials for the most common drywall constructions:

One of the integral elements of almost any modern renovation are drywall constructions. This, and only nothing surprising, because this material allows you to build a wide variety of partitions, to rest certain functional areas, equip the original multi-level ceilings and quickly perform an even formation for wall decoration.

Among the main advantages of drywall constructions, it makes sense to highlight:

  • light weight and easy installation;
  • good ductility of the material for processing;
  • the minimum abundance of garbage generated in the process of work;
  • high heat and sound insulation characteristics;
  • environmental friendliness, safety for health;
  • non-flammable;
  • low cost.

One of the few disadvantages of using drywall is the essentiality of the application. various kinds profiles and screws, as well as dowels, mesh for reinforcement, putty and primer, hangers and connecting elements. Moreover, all this must be acquired in enough, for which it is also appropriate to determine the amount of drywall required for the construction of a certain partition, wall or ceiling. It is easier to calculate this, knowing the approximate consumption of drywall and materials, take 1m2 of certain structures.

The tables below will show the consumption rates of drywall in 1 m2 of partition structures, wall and ceiling finishes.

Beat pocket putty and primer for drywall

The main purpose of applying a primer to a ceiling or wall surface is to increase the strength of the base and improve adhesion for a stronger adhesion finishing material with plasterboard surface. As a rule, the treatment of drywall is carried out with an alkyd primer. For 1 square meter surface consumes about 100 milliliters of the substance. If the primer is made on top of the putty, it is advisable to use facade primer, the consumption of which is 130-150 milliliters per 1 square meter.

How much (money) putty comes out largely depends on how thick the tropopause superimposed in the process of work has. As a rule, the average consumption level per 1 square meter is at the level of 1 kilogram of material. So, if a false ceiling is processed in a room, in addition to high humidity, then you will have to spend 1.15 kilograms per individual square meter. Closing cracks and other minor defects, you can use the gypsum-based material, which will require 850 grams per square meter. In the final stage, glue-type putty is often used, the consumption of which is 500 grams, get a “square”.

Often, the drywall manufacturers themselves supply the market with special materials, designed to please anyone) its finishes. As a rule, the consumption of putty and primer for drywall, produced by one brand, is slightly lower than in the case of using materials from other companies.

Expendable article of self-tapping screws for drywall

Fastening drywall sheets to the profile, as a rule, is done using self-tapping screws, the step between which should be 30 centimeters. Sometimes, in order to increase the strength of the structure, they resort to reducing the step to 10 centimeters.

It is extremely important to remember that fastening screws closer than 10 mm to the edge of the sheet is not possible, as this can cause cracking.

In order to determine the approximate consumption of self-tapping screws, it is necessary to take into account several different parameters:

  • Plasterboard size. Its standard measure is 1200 by 2500 millimeters. Non-standard panels are also produced, having a size of 600 and 2000 millimeters. But, since the first option is more common, it is he who, as a rule, is taken as the basis for making calculations.
  • Attachment distance. According to experts, drywall sheets should be fixed with a 35-centimeter step. This is what allows the finished structure to have high level strength, reliability and durability.
  • Composition of plasterboard layers. In the case of installing drywall in several layers, the fastening must be carried out with different steps. For example, the first layer is attached with a 60 cm step, and the second with a 35 cm step.

After the mandatory indicators are determined, it is possible to easily calculate the consumption of self-tapping screws for drywall for attaching the sheet. Get one sheet will need approximately 70 pieces, while two layers will require a minimum of 110 pieces in the image.

Drywall adhesive consumption

When implementing interior decoration with the use of drywall, sheeting can be done not only with self-tapping screws, but also with glue. In this relationship, it is necessary to know the consumption of drywall adhesive. In the case of using the popular mounting mixture Perlifix, how much (money) comes out will be at the level of 5 kilograms per square meter (plus it’s good to add a certain amount for inevitable losses).

In order for the mixture to be spent more economically, it is necessary to carry out proper training grounds for the use of glue. First of all, you should make sure that it is dry and has an unfavorable temperature of less than plus 5 degrees. The surface must be cleaned of dirt and dust deposits, delaminations, residues of formwork lubricants and other contaminants; if necessary, it can be washed. After that, possible protrusions should be eliminated.

When working on highly absorbent surfaces such as silicate brick, aerated concrete, plaster, it is necessary to make a primer with a roller, brush or sprayer. In the case of highly saturated surfaces, priming provides an increase in adhesive properties, as a result of which the mounting pulp will more reliably adhere to the wall or ceiling. In the process of drying the primed surface, nothing can be done to ensure that dust does not get on it.

The adhesive pulp is prepared as follows:

The plastic tank is being filled clean water at the rate of fifteen to sixteen liters per 30-kilogram bag of dry mix. After that, mounting glue is poured into the water and it is thoroughly mixed using a construction mixer in front until a homogeneous porridge-like mass is formed. It is not necessary to add any other components to this mixture, as this may adversely affect its strength. It is impossible to work with the resulting solution at a fast pace, since after about half an hour after preparation, the beloved will begin to harden.

Paint consumption for drywall

When coating plasterboard sheets with paint, as a rule, a water-based emulsion is used. Most often it is sold in white, tea, if desired, you can add special dyes to it, which will give it the required blueness. Paint of this type is suitable for use in any premises, and allows you to get a surface of a glossy or matte type. This point should be taken into account in advance when purchasing paint. The advantage of the matte version is that it allows you to hide various kinds of defects, while the gloss, on the contrary, will further emphasize possible sin, therefore, in this case, extreme caution and accuracy are required at the preparation stage.

Indeed, one of the main distinctive features water-based paint is the ability to quickly and easily give it the required texture, for which rollers with long pile otherwise, special curly ones.

Estimated paint consumption for drywall is 1 liter on top for every 5 square meters of area. The exact information about this can be recognized on the packaging of the material.

In addition to water-based, you can also use acrylic paint for water based. It is especially recommended to use it in rooms that are characterized by increased moisture content, since this paint is able to maintain its original appearance when exposed to moisture.

Acrylic paint also allows you to give the surface a soft or glossy look. As for the texture, it is important to achieve it more difficult than when using a water-based emulsion. Approximate consumption acrylic paint keep 1m2 for drywall is the same as the previous option, that is, it is approximately 0.2 liters per 1 square meter.

Drywall constructions are used in almost any repair, and especially often in interior wall decoration. With it, you can even out irregularities of several centimeters, which is very difficult to achieve using ordinary plaster. Sometimes in private houses the walls will not stand strictly vertically, but slightly tilted. To achieve verticality in this case is also easier using GKL or GVL sheets. The result is a flat surface suitable for any fine finish. Drywall is mounted very quickly, and is inexpensive.

Starting the selection of material for finishing, it is recommended to use drywall wall calculator. With it, the likelihood that building materials may not be enough, or more than necessary, will be minimized.

The drywall wall calculator will roughly calculate the amount of material needed for each wall and for the entire room as a whole. Exact amount can only be obtained using a room plan with the dimensions of door and window openings indicated on it.

But approximate calculations will also be useful, since on their basis it will be possible to calculate the cost of building materials, or control the requirements of builders. Using the calculator is very easy. First you need to accurately measure the length and width of the wall that needs finishing, then enter the data into the form presented on the page. He will do all the calculations himself.

It is very convenient that with the help of such a calculator you can do not only drywall calculation for walls, but also to determine the number related materials, such as guide profiles, putty materials, fasteners, and others.

The construction of drywall structures begins with the design and calculation of the amount of purchased material. It is easy to find out the number of profiles and GKL, but it is more difficult to determine how much fasteners are needed. Let's find out how to count the number of self-tapping screws per drywall sheet.

What kind of self-tapping screws are used when installing GKL?

For fastening drywall to the frame, screws of different lengths are used:

  • 25 mm - when installing GKL in one layer;
  • 35 mm - when sheathing in two layers.

The type of self-tapping screws is selected based on the material of the frame:

  • the cladding is attached to the profile with metal screws;
  • to a bar - on a tree.

It is easy to distinguish between them: hardware designed to work with metal has a more frequent thread.

Do not use one type of screws instead of another: this will definitely affect the strength of the fastening.

Fastener design provides convenience and quality of work:

  • The hardware is protected from corrosion by a special coating that gives them a black color.
  • The pointed thread spiral ensures easy penetration of the self-tapping screw into the metal profile and securely holds it there in the future.
  • The cone head is recessed into the material and does not interfere with subsequent finishing.
  • A deep cross-shaped slot on it allows you to screw in a self-tapping screw with a conventional screwdriver or a screwdriver.

When using a screwdriver, you need to act carefully: there is a high risk of drowning the screw too deeply and ruining the material. Facilitate the work: due to its design, it limits the screwing depth of the hardware.

Professionals use . They facilitate and speed up the process of installing drywall sheets at times. But the cost of such a tool is high, so it makes no sense to purchase it for a single repair.

Before calculating how many self-tapping screws will go to the structure, it is logical to familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations for their placement. Here the following nuances are taken into account:

  • The distance between adjacent screws must be more than 10 cm, otherwise, when screwing in, the sheet gypsum will begin to crumble.
  • When leveling walls or installing partitions, a step of 25–35 cm is taken between the attachment points. It is reduced to 15–20 cm if surface cladding is planned in the future heavy material such as ceramic tiles.

HELPFUL INFORMATION: How to make a plasterboard ceiling with your own hands: marking, assembly, finishing

  • More hardware goes to the ceiling sheathing, since they are attached more often: the step is 15–20 cm. The rule works here: the thicker and heavier the drywall, the smaller the distance between the attachment points.
  • When installing in two layers, the first one is fastened less often - every 45–60 cm. The screws that fix the second layer are 10 cm longer. When screwed in, they additionally fix the first one. This reduces the consumption of hardware and frees you from unnecessary costs.
  • The number of required attachment points increases with the construction of curved structures. Here the pitch between the screws is chosen so as to fix desired shape surfaces.

Calculation of the number of screws

It is produced according to the frame scheme drawn up. It is clear that the number and dimensions of the guides, as well as the jumpers between them, will be individual for each case. General recommendations the following:

  • For walls, the distance between the guides is 40 or 60 cm. This step allows you to place the joints of the sheets on the surface of the profile.

  • The number of horizontal jumpers depends on the dimensions of the room (one sheet of drywall is often not enough in height), as well as on the requirements for structural rigidity (required when building partitions, and when leveling walls, they can be neglected).
  • For ceiling structures frames are constructed in the form of cells with dimensions of 40 × 40, 40 × 60 or 60 × 60 cm. This structure ensures a minimum of trimming and joining of elements on the profile.
  • 11 self-tapping screws for each post (the sheet is located vertically, its length is 2500 mm, the fastening pitch is 25 mm).
  • Based on 4 racks - 44 screws.
  • Plus 6 - for fastening to the upper and lower horizontal jumper (three for each - just place one self-tapping screw between adjacent vertical posts).
  • A total of 50 pieces will go to the sheet.

Hello! It's no secret that I love doing DIY repairs and sharing my experience. Today I want to tell you about an unpleasant story that happened to me and my friend. We decided to make repairs with friends, but incorrectly determined the consumption of self-tapping screws needed per square meter. m. GKL. And since we've been tidying up Vacation home, I had to stop work and go to a local store. I will not talk about overpayments, but the loss of time was noticeable. To avoid such a prospect, study the calculation rules and purchase right amount self-tapping screws!

Everyone who has decided to make repairs using a drywall sheet is wondering how many self-tapping screws will need to be prepared per 1m2 drywall panel. As a rule, there is no unequivocal answer to this question, since their number is calculated depending on the step of attaching drywall to metal or wooden profiles.

Basic rules for calculating the consumption of self-tapping screws

Most often, drywall is attached to the profile with self-tapping screws, while maintaining a step of 30 cm. If you need to increase the strength of the structure, the step is reduced to 10 cm.

Important! Self-tapping screws should never be fastened closer than 10 mm from the edge to avoid cracking.

Thus, it turns out that you can only find out the approximate consumption of self-tapping screws. To calculate how many self-tapping screws you need, you need to consider several parameters:

GKL size: it is released in standard sizes- 1200x2500 mm. In addition, there are non-standard panels, the size of which is 600x2000 mm. To make a calculation approximate number self-tapping screws, you need to take the first option, since it is more common.

  1. Attachment step. Experts recommend fixing the GKL in increments of 35 cm, as this indicator is able to ensure the durability and reliability of the finished structure.
  2. The number of layers of drywall. If it was decided to install drywall in several layers at once, self-tapping screws must be fastened with different steps. For example, the first layer will be attached every 60 cm, and the second - every 35 cm.

Having decided on the mandatory indicators, you can correctly calculate the required number of self-tapping screws in order to attach the GKL. It will take about 70 pieces per sheet, and at least 110 for two layers. By choosing a specific fastening step and the number of panels for manufacturing future design, you can easily calculate the consumption of fasteners.

Types of self-tapping screws for drywall and more: calculate the consumption

Fasteners for drywall have different sizes, types and features of the coating. These include self-tapping screws for metal, wood, dowel-nails, butterfly dowels and many others. Most often, both for wooden and metal profile, self-tapping screws are used.

The type of material determines the consumption

Consumption of self-tapping screws for fastening the profile

When forming a frame from a metal profile, special metal screws are used. Their dimensions are: length 9.5 and 11 mm, diameter 3.5 and 9.5 mm. They are available in two types protective coating, namely phosphate and zinc. Their head has a hemispherical or semi-cylindrical shape. It is supplied with a Philips No. 2 slot, designed for a cross-shaped bit nozzle.

The base of the heads on the side of the thread is provided with notches. This allows you to protect the fastener from possible self-loosening. The thread pitch of such self-tapping screws is very frequent, which is what distinguishes them from other representatives of fasteners designed for fixing drywall. Such fasteners are also called self-tapping bugs. It is one of the most popular fasteners on the modern construction market.

There are several types of such products:

  1. Self-tapping bugs with a drill are used to fasten a profile with a thickness of up to 2 mm. With their help, fastening is carried out without any serious problems. The most important thing is to adjust the twisting force of the screwdriver. This is required to prevent thread stripping in the profile. To receive best result it is recommended to use a high-quality bit that perfectly aligns its own axis with the axis of the self-tapping screw. In addition, it firmly holds fastener when twisting the profile, without deforming the fastener slot. For each type of self-tapping screws used for fastening both for metal and for wooden profile, the manufacturer's documentation provides information that refers to the recommended tightening torques.
  2. Self-tapping bugs with a sharp end provide the ability to drill holes in metal sheets with a thickness of up to 1.2 mm. When using such elements, the profile material is not destroyed, which contributes to the preservation of its structure. Selection Guide relevant tool and the choice of nozzles are the same as in the first case.

In order to better fix the GKL, in some cases an additional magnetic nozzle is used, which comes in combination with a bat. This will provide a more secure hold of the self-tapping screw on the axis of the tool being used.

How to fix drywall with self-tapping screws: consumption per sq. m.

To attach drywall with self-tapping screws, you do not need a large set of tools:

  • screwdriver;
  • special magnetic nozzles;
  • bit;
  • self-tapping screws for metal and wood.

To pin drywall sheet in one layer to the frame, which can be made of two materials, it is necessary to take self-tapping screws for metal, the length of which reaches 25 mm, or for wood - 32 mm.

The head of such a fastener is a countersunk carob type. When screwing in, such a self-tapping screw does not break upper layer drywall, as it pushes the edges of the cardboard into the hole. If during operation it is not possible to tighten the self-tapping screw or it bends, it must be unscrewed and replaced with a new one. It is important to remember that a self-tapping screw cannot be screwed into the same hole twice. It will be necessary to make an indent of at least 50 mm.

To reduce consumption, consider the type of screws

There are a number of mandatory requirements for installing drywall fasteners:

  1. Self-tapping screws must enter the frame strictly at right angles. At the same time, it should deepen by at least one third of its length. In a frame made of a metal profile to a depth of at least 10 mm, from a wooden one - 20 mm.
  2. The distance from the edge of the drywall to the fasteners must be at least 10 mm.
  3. The head of the screw must be recessed into the sheet by 1 mm.
  4. There should not be any foreign inclusions between the frame from any profile. If you neglect this rule, the sheet is deformed rather quickly.

Self-tapping screws tn 25 are designed for fastening the material in one layer to the frame, made using a metal profile. In this case, the thickness of drywall should not exceed 12.5 mm.

Self-tapping screws tn 35 are used for wall cladding with plasterboard. In this case, the number of layers is two.

Important! The seams of the lower and upper layers should not match. Otherwise, the design will be greatly weakened.

Important nuances of fastening self-tapping screws: how it affects consumption

Self-tapping screws tn are used for a profile whose thickness does not exceed 0.7 mm.

Self-tapping screws for wood have a pitch and angle of the thread profile greater than those of fasteners designed to work with metal. Their design contributes to a more durable fastening of drywall to wooden blocks. Wood screws cannot be replaced with metal screws, as this will weaken finished structure. Wooden frames are sheathed with fasteners tn 35 in one layer, tn 45 - in two layers.

Drywall can also be fixed using tb self-tapping screws. Their design is similar to metal screws. The only difference is that instead of a sharp end, they are equipped with a drill, with which they drill holes in the profile up to 2.2 mm. It's perfect for when the tn for profile doesn't do the job. Such a self-tapping screw holds perfectly in a profile made of various materials.

The rate of consumption of self-tapping screws, depending on the type of plasterboard

Before deciding how many self-tapping screws are needed and calculating the consumption, it is necessary to decide on the type of drywall used to build the structure.

Drywall is divided into several types depending on the properties and purpose:

  1. Ordinary drywall (gypsum plasterboard) is used only for interior decoration. With the help of such materials, walls, ceilings are lined and partitions are mounted in a room in which dry or normal humidity conditions prevail.
  2. Moisture resistant drywall (GKLV) has a water absorption of less than 10%. With the help of such materials, rooms with dry or humid conditions are finished.
  3. Fireproof drywall (marked as GKLO). Such drywall is intended for facing rooms in which fires are possible. This is possible due to the fact that this drywall is characterized by increased resistance to open fire.
  4. Drywall GKLVO combines the properties of a moisture-resistant and fire-resistant material.

Consumption rates for self-tapping screws

When planning the transportation of goods or calculating the load building structures you need to know the weight of Knauf drywall. Calculating it is quite simple, since the sheets have the correct geometric shape and are made of a homogeneous material with a known density. But for this you need to know the type of material and its dimensions. The weight of the sheet within one batch has a constant value.

You can find out how much GKL weighs based on its thickness, area and specific gravity. GOST 6266-97 regulates the mass of one millimeter of sheet thickness with an area of 1 m2. It depends on the type of material corresponding to the area of its application. For conventional drywall it should be no more than 1.0 kg. For moisture-resistant, fire-resistant and moisture-fire-resistant sheets, the range is from 0.8 to 1.06 kg.

GKL weight 1 m2 is obtained by simply multiplying this figure by the thickness of the sheet. For 8.0 mm of ordinary GKL, the weight of 1 m2 is taken equal to 8.0 kg. For moisture resistant, it can be from 0.8 * 8.0 = 6.4 kg to 1.06 * 8.0 = 8.48 kg.

Consumption of self-tapping screws per 1m2 of drywall

The weight of the drywall sheet and the consumption of self-tapping screws on the wall

Knowing the weight of a unit area of the drywall, it is easy to calculate how much a drywall sheet weighs. To do this, by multiplying the length of the sheet by its width, the area is obtained, which in turn is multiplied by the weight per square meter. So the weight of GKL 12.5 mm for normal use with a size of 2500x1200 mm will be no more than 2.5 * 1.2 * 12.5 \u003d 37.5 kg. For the same moisture-resistant GKL 12.5 mm, the weight can be in the range from 30 to 40 kg.

Exist a large number of Knauf sheet sizes, so how much drywall weighs is calculated for each of them independently or use the appropriate tables. For a conventional GKL, a version of the table can be presented in the following form.

GKL sheet weight: calculate the consumption of self-tapping screws

What plays an important role in repair and installation? Of course, fasteners. Due to the variety of jobs that require fixing and the materials used during repairs, a wide range of fastening products are used. In this article, we will take a closer look at the data on the consumption of self-tapping screws per drywall sheet.

Table of self-tapping screws for the ceiling

Drywall is used to create ceilings and partitions. To install sheets, you need fasteners. Self-tapping screws are excellent for this business, which will require a considerable amount.

Of course, you can save money and use fewer fasteners, but we are talking about the fastening from which it is required long term services. Note that material consumption cannot be calculated with accuracy.

The frames, which are the support for the GKL, are represented by two types: metal and wooden. There are several types of fasteners: dowel-butterfly, dowel-nail, self-tapping screws for metal and wood. Without self-tapping screws it is impossible to imagine repair work. They are chosen depending on what material the frame of the partition or ceiling consists of. Remember that self-tapping screws for metal and wood are not interchangeable.

The ceiling is an important part of the apartment, and therefore carefully select the materials for it. The visual difference between self-tapping screws for metal and wood is the distance between two thread ridges. It's called a step. More details on the picture.

Consumption of self-tapping screws per square meter of drywall

Correctly calculate the number of self-tapping screws for fixing the ceiling frame and partition, because if there are not enough of them, the drywall will not hold well, and if there are too many, it will crack.

Professionals recommend placing self-tapping screws at a distance of 35 cm from each other. If necessary, strengthen the structure, you can carry out fastenings and closer. The profile mounting distance should not be less than 10 centimeters. Remember that at least 10 millimeters recede from the edge, since when installed at a shorter distance from the edge of the profile, it may be destroyed. The consumption of fasteners depends on how much you need to strengthen the ceiling or partitions.

It is worth noting that a distance of 35 centimeters refers to a single-layer GKL coating. If you make a stepped ceiling or attach sheets in two layers, the parameters will change. Self-tapping screws are installed on the first sheet at a distance of 60 cm, and on the second sheet at 35 cm already known to us. This is quite enough for a good strengthening of the structure. The number of self-tapping screws per 1 m² varies from 20 to 25 pieces, but it is best to take it with a margin so as not to visit the store several times.

If you need accurate information, use the electronic calculation in the online service. Using the calculator program, calculate the consumption of fasteners and other materials that are used in the work.

But be that as it may, even electronic calculation does not guarantee that some parts will not be rejected or damaged, so purchase materials with a 15% margin.

  • Direct the fasteners into the gypsum board and the frame at a right angle. This guarantees strength and reduces the chance of cracks. If the fastener enters obliquely, then the hole becomes larger, which reduces the strength of the material.
  • If the self-tapping screw entered obliquely, then it should be pulled out and screwed in again.

It is important that it is forbidden to screw into the same hole twice. Step back at least 5 centimeters from the previous hole, this ensures that the plasterboard does not collapse.

An example of the location of self-tapping screws

  • Keep track of how far the self-tapping screw goes. Professionals say that at least a third of the length should be in the frame. This guarantees good anchorage.
  • Once the fixing is in place, check the surface for smoothness. Fasteners should not protrude, the hat is “recessed” to a depth of one millimeter. No more and no less, with a significant deviation from this parameter, there is a threat to the structure.
  • When a stepped ceiling or partitions with a double layer of GKL are installed, the sheets are overlapped. In this case, the edges of the two layers should not coincide, as this reduces the stability of the structure. A similar method is used in profiled sheet fences.
  • There should not be any foreign objects and materials between the GKL and the frame, since one of the disadvantages of this material is the ability to deform.

If you follow the tips for using self-tapping screws, you will get the optimal consumption of materials. It increases only due to damage to parts of the structure.

Consumption of self-tapping screws on the wall: ensure reliability

There are cases when the self-tapping screw untwisted and increased the likelihood of breakage. To avoid such problems, self-tapping bugs were invented. They are so named because, like insects, they hold well on the surface. The risk of self-unwinding is reduced to zero due to notches on the head.

Use the provided data on the consumption of self-tapping screws for calculations, then you will fix the partitions and the plasterboard ceiling properly.

Self-tapping screws: consumption per m2

Drywall has long come into use as a reliable and effective construction material. Among the mounting methods, installation on a metal frame is popular. It requires additional elements, including fasteners.

The main element with which the structural elements are connected, a drywall sheet is screwed to a metal frame, and sometimes the frame itself to the surface, is a self-tapping screw. The name itself speaks of its ability to easily screw into the surface. But when constructing structures from GKL, it is important right choice self-tapping screw.

Types of self-tapping screws: correctly calculate the consumption

Types, differences of self-tapping screws

A self-tapping screw is a metal rod with a thread, a cap or head and a spout different shapes depending on the tasks to be solved. Head with cross slot. There are self-tapping screws - universal, for wood and metal.

These fasteners differ in many ways, including the material of manufacture. This is:

  • High carbon steel.
  • Stainless or alloy steel.
  • Brass.

They are coated with phosphates (black), oxides (also black), galvanized coating (light - often white) or no coating at all. Phosphated self-tapping screws with a conical head are marked SMK, steel galvanized with a press washer - SMM. For a tree - SHD.

Self-tapping screw - frequent and rare. The first is used to work with metal. The second is for wood. A pointed nose in the form of a drill is designed for drilling into thick (up to 2 mm) metal.

Dimensions of self-tapping screws for metal and consumption rate

The main sizes of self-tapping screws used in the construction of drywall structures on a metal frame are as follows:

  • Fasteners with a length of 25 mm and a diameter of 3.5 mm are used to fasten the GKL to the frame. When installing two layers of drywall, self-tapping screws 35 mm long are used. The metal of manufacture does not play a big role, but galvanized is always preferable where high humidity. A nose with a drill is used if the profile is more than 0.7 mm thick. Choose a self-tapping screw with a press washer. It is easier to hide under putty.
  • The fastening of profiles with each other is carried out by the so-called "bugs" or "fleas" among the people. Sometimes they are called "texes" by marking TEX3.5x9.5 mm. These are self-tapping screws for metal with a hemispherical head 9.5 or 11 mm long with a sharp or drill-shaped tip. The tip-drill is used to connect a profile with a thickness of 0.7 mm or more.

How to calculate the consumption of self-tapping screws for metal

At the stage of preparation for working with gypsum boards, they acquire the appropriate metal screws. It is more profitable to do this in bulk, and they are sold in large packages of 100 or more pieces. For an approximate calculation of the required amount per square meter and the correct consumption, take into account:

  • The size of the drywall sheet. As a rule, it is 1.2 by 2.5 meters.
  • Attachment step. For reliable fastening, self-tapping screws are placed at a distance of 35 cm from each other. You can install more often - it all depends on the desired rigidity and durability of the structure.
  • The number of layers of GCR. The second layer is fixed in increments of 35 cm or more.
  • The total length of the profile and the number of connections with self-tapping screws. Each has four elements.

Consumption of self-tapping screws per 1m2 of drywall

An approximate calculation shows that about 70 pieces are required to fasten a standard sheet, and 100 pieces in two layers. Their cost is low - on average, a package (100 pieces) costs a little more than half a dollar, so to save time and nerves, they take it with a margin.

Selected with quality control packaging. It is better to purchase one pack and check the quality of the elements, and then take as much as you need. Use galvanized steel self-tapping screws (white). They are suitable for use in any type of room, with any mode of humidity and temperature.

When choosing, evaluate appearance self-tapping screws - the same dimensions, without thickenings, bends. The spouts are even, the slots are located in the center of the cap. The color of the elements is uniform, which confirms the quality of the coating. It is recommended to buy products from manufacturers with a name. Their screws on the head are marked with a Latin letter.

Consumption rate of self-tapping screws per m2: how to fasten correctly

Before sheathing with drywall, mark the position of the holes of the self-tapping screws. The step size depends on the design load on the structure and varies from 15 to 50 cm. The recommended one is 25 cm.

To work, prepare a screwdriver with various nozzles and a cross screwdriver. For convenience, use a magnet or magnetic tape to hold several items at once. This will speed up the process - both hands are often busy in work. Masters for these purposes use special belts with pockets under various elements fasteners.

In order to securely fasten the GKL to the frame, put a self-tapping screw on the nozzle, place the screwdriver strictly perpendicular to the surface of the sheet and completely screw the self-tapping screw into the sheet with a recess of 1 mm, no more. In this case, the cone head makes a funnel in the drywall sheet and holds the sheet firmly.

Skewing should not be allowed - this will weaken the fasteners, plus when finishing, the spatula will cling to the edge of the head. Excessive screwing will cause deformation of the sheet, which is also a marriage. The screw will break paper cover and will only hold onto the gypsum core of the sheet. Gypsum will wash out over time and the mount will weaken.

In such cases, the self-tapping screw is unscrewed, if necessary, changed and twisted again 5 cm from the previous place of screwing. The hole is plastered. It is not recommended to screw the self-tapping screw closer than 1 cm to the corner or edge of the sheet.

The video shows how to properly screw metal screws:

How to check the result: the correct consumption of self-tapping screws

To determine whether all the screws have entered to a sufficient depth, you can run a spatula over the surface - it should not cling to anything.

They are screwed in with a screwdriver, first at maximum speed, and after the self-tapping screw enters the sheet halfway, the speed is reduced to a minimum. The screwdriver works smoothly, without strong pressure. When working with a screwdriver, it is important to use a quality bit, otherwise you will break the part and increase consumption. Self-tapping screws for metal are taken only with a countersunk head.

When a profile is screwed to the drywall, the self-tapping screws are screwed in a herringbone pattern - at an angle to the left, at an angle to the right, etc. In this case, the screws should not be screwed into the metal until they stop, but before the start of the conical part. This ensures the distribution of the load along the profile - he himself presses the gypsum with his area. The strength of such a compound increases by one and a half times.
