Fastening plastic skirting boards. How to fasten a plinth: features of fastening plinths made of MDF, wood and plastic. Installation method with dowels and screws

There are three ways to install PVC floor skirting boards. The choice of installation method for plastic profiles is made taking into account the design of the plinth. In turn, the type of polyvinyl chloride profile is selected based on what type of flooring was used in the room.

Types of floor plastic skirting boards

Models plastic skirting boards distinguished not only by color design and texture. The different ratio of components in the composition of plastic profiles divides them into skirting boards made of hard, foamed, semi-rigid, soft polyvinyl chloride. The latest products are indispensable indoors non-standard shape(with oval walls, columns).

If we talk about the design differences between floor profiles, we can distinguish two main groups: skirting boards with and without cable duct. A special type of plinth is connelly. With its help, the coating (linoleum) is applied to the wall. The end of the floor covering is finished with a special edge. Instead, you can use an L-shaped carpet skirting board.

Universal one-piece profile

Solid PVC skirting board is a non-separable profile model. It does not have removable decorative elements. This profile can be laid on any surface (carpet, linoleum, laminate).

Method of placing wires behind a profile without cable channels

The design of the model of a blind solid profile does not allow communication lines to be placed inside, since it is not hollow. But, despite the absence of a cable channel, it is easy to install low-current wiring in a small groove on the back side of a solid baseboard.

Attention: you can buy the common average type of skirting boards, the installation of which creates spacious gutters for laying wiring.

A wide solid plinth with grooves, mounted on factory fasteners, can hide a telephone line, Internet cable, etc. However, to gain access to the wires, you will have to completely dismantle the profile.

Skirting board with cable channel

The popular model of plinth with cable duct consists of two parts, which fundamentally distinguishes it from a solid profile. The first part is internal mounting panel, the second is external decorative profile. The plinth is notable for its special cavity in the inside, where the wire can easily fit. To lay the cable, simply remove the decorative strip.

Wires can be laid in a profile with a cable channel inside the baseboard and behind the edge of the mounting strip

But to get to the wire hidden behind mounting plate, will be more difficult than dismantling a solid profile mounted on clips, since the plinth with cable channel is attached to the wall using impact screws or self-tapping screws. Therefore, in order not to break the soft edge of the panels, the screws that hold the baseboard will have to be unscrewed.

L-shaped models for carpet

L-shaped floor skirting boards are used in rooms where carpet is installed. A strip of carpet is inserted inside the baseboard and fixed in it by an adhesive layer located under the strip on the front part of the profile.

Skirting for carpet allows you to create the appearance of integrity of the covering

The upper part of the plinth is represented by a narrow strip that bends down. It can have different colors. The main difference between skirting boards with an L-shaped cross-section is the presence or absence of stiffeners. Skirting boards with stiffening ribs are fastened with self-tapping screws, and those that do not have them are installed with glue.

Preparations for installing skirting boards

When starting to install the floor profile, make sure that you tidy up the surfaces adjacent to the baseboard. The walls must be leveled, pasted over or painted; laminate flooring must be laid or linoleum or carpet laid down.

Having done the described renovation work, we determine what materials, tools, and components will be needed to install the profiles. Before going to the store, you need to make calculations to find out how much materials, connecting elements and fasteners you need to buy.

Calculation and purchase of materials and components

To calculate how many skirting boards to buy, you should find the perimeter of the rooms and, after subtracting the width of the doorways, divide everything by the length of one profile. The number we get when dividing is the number of skirting boards. It needs to be rounded up.

Attention: standard length plinths - 2.5 m.

Next, we count the number of corners in the room. This will allow you to determine the number of external and internal corner elements. Also, as a rule, there is a need for connecting elements. Their number can be easily determined using a drawing of the room. The number of doors determines how many plugs are needed. We count clips, screws, and dowels, taking into account the perimeter of the room and the step at which they are attached to the wall.

Tool preparation

When installing skirting boards using factory fastenings or using screws alone, you will need:

  1. Hammer or impact drill - for drilling concrete walls.
  2. Screwdriver or regular drill- used when installing on Wall panels and walls made of wood, gypsum plasterboard.
  3. Screwdriver, screwdriver attachments - for screwing in screws.
  4. A hacksaw for metal, a miter box - for cutting skirting boards.
  5. Roulette.

However, you cannot do without the tools indicated in the last two paragraphs when installing profiles on adhesive mixtures.

Methods for installing PVC floor plinths

The method of fastening plastic profiles is chosen taking into account the type of product. Skirting boards with a cable channel, L-shaped profiles with stiffening ribs are installed on self-tapping screws (impact screws). Using adhesives, a plinth tape and a profile without stiffeners are installed under the carpet. Solid profiles with grooves snap onto special fasteners (clips).

On factory fastenings (clips)

You can install the plinth with clips only in rooms with a flat floor and walls. Clips are fastening elements that are installed in increments of 50 cm.

Before installing a solid profile with grooves on plastic clips that are not adjacent to the floor without technical holes, you need to make markings. The profile, together with the attached fastener, leans against the wall. A mark is placed according to the level of the clip. It shows at what height the fasteners should be installed. Using available materials, the clip is adjusted to the level of the mark. Moving it close to the wall, we drill the wall through the hole made in the clip, pulling the “stand” with the fastener. We fix the clips above the floor using dowels and impact screws. The baseboard is connected to light fastenings pressing the bar.

When installing the clips, we retreat from the corners by 10 cm

Installation of the plinth can also be carried out using metal clips, the lower part of which is located on the floor. When mounting a profile on them in a room with flat surfaces, there is no need to determine the height of the mounting. Using a pencil and tape measure, we make markings on the wall, stepping back from the inner corner. In order not to perform extra work, along with a tape measure, you can also place a clip near the wall, identifying points for drilling through the hole in the mount. The clip is placed directly on the floor.

Having completed the markings, we drill holes in the wall, the width of which corresponds to the diameter of the dowel. The clips are secured with impact screws. The cable is placed inside the mount. Installation of profiles is carried out from the inner corner of the room.

Installing skirting boards on metal fasteners

Installation with screws

Profiles with a cable channel can be attached to the screws. This installation method will ensure a tight fit of the plinth to the surfaces, even if they are not even. The profile with the inner corner put on the end is applied to the place of future fastening. The first point is marked 5 cm from the corner. When the walls are smooth, marks on the profile are placed in increments of 50 cm, otherwise the distance between them is reduced.

The size of the hole drilling step depends on the condition of the walls

Using an awl, holes are poked in the cable channel. There should be awl marks on the wall. Using the remaining marks, we drill holes in the wall with a hammer drill. After removing the dust, we hammer in the dowels. Self-tapping screws are attached to the holes in the cable channel and tightened until the head is immersed in the plastic. The next profile is attached to the previous one using a connector and installed in the same way. If necessary, the plinth is pre-sawn. Wires are passed through the cable channel. After laying the cable, you need to insert the decorative part of the baseboard and install plugs near the doorway.

Installing skirting boards with self-tapping screws is the most reliable way installation

Important: when measuring the length of the skirting boards before cutting, it is necessary to additionally take into account the thickness of the connecting elements.

Another installation option: put on internal corner onto the baseboard and, placing it, drill holes in the wall directly through the cable channel. The dowels should then be inserted and the impact screws driven in.

Fixing the baseboard with dowels through a cable channel speeds up installation

Installation with adhesive mixtures

Most quick way installation of skirting boards - installation with special glue or liquid nails. All you need to do is lubricate glue mixture plinth adjusted to the size of the room and press it against the wall. Before installing the plinth, joints and corners are put on it.

Glue installation is good because it eliminates labor-intensive drilling of surfaces. True, there are also disadvantages:

  1. The profile is difficult to dismantle.
  2. A product that loses its appearance during dismantling is not suitable for reinstallation.
  3. There is a risk of staining adjacent surfaces and clothing with glue.

Each method of installing floor skirting boards has its own advantages (quick fixation or dismantling of planks, the ability to reinstallation profile without its deformation), and disadvantages. When choosing which one to prefer, you should take into account the condition of the surfaces to which the skirting boards will be attached, the type of floor covering and experience in performing installation work.

Serves in the interior as a decorative element that complements the main floor finish. Such planks are usually made of wood or plastic. They are fastened using certain technologies, which may vary depending on the material they are made of.

We will discuss in detail how to correctly install skirting boards made of veneered, MDF or on this or that type of flooring in this article.

How to attach a plastic floor plinth

Installation of plastic strips can be done different ways. First, let's see how it's done

Installation on dowels

So, how to attach the baseboard to the floor? Or rather, not to the floor, but to the walls, since this is how it is mounted. The fact is that most facing materials When the air temperature changes in the room, they can slightly expand and contract. Therefore, if you attach the plinth directly to the floor, deformation of the coating is possible.

The floor plinth is attached to the wall, not to the floor

One of the most common methods is to install the planks yourself using plastic dowels and self-tapping screws. Installation is carried out in several stages:

  1. First of all, the planks are attached to the long wall of the room. They usually start laying from the inner corner. Here you need to drill a hole and insert a plastic dowel into it. A hole is made in the corner element, then it is applied to the corner and secured with a self-tapping screw, which must be screwed into the dowel;

The strips are attached with self-tapping screws and plastic dowels

  1. Fastening is also carried out with preliminary drilling of holes for dowels in the wall. Very flat surfaces the pitch between holes is usually 0.5-1m (depending on the length of the wall itself). If the walls are uneven, holes for self-tapping screws are drilled in those places where the baseboard may subsequently move slightly away from the wall;

Installation of planks begins with the installation of plastic dowels

  1. Next, holes are made in each plank with the appropriate spacing. Then the plank needs to be inserted into the corner, pressed against the wall and screwed with self-tapping screws. In the same way, continue to mount all the elements up to the opposite wall;

The plank is attached close to the wall

Advice: When installing, it is best not to drill through the plastic, but to pierce it with an awl or an old screwdriver, the blade of which is sharpened to a triangular point.
  1. The installation of plastic skirting boards continues by attaching a special corner element to the outer corner. Holes for it must be drilled on both sides. The corner element is applied to the surface of the corner and fastened with self-tapping screws;

On external corner a special corner element is attached

  1. On final stage The joints are covered with special decorative strips. You can attach them using liquid nails. At this point, the assembly of the plastic floor plinth can be considered complete.
On a note: You can lay strips not only on self-tapping screws, but also on regular nails. It is best to hammer them into a wooden pin, which is used instead of dowels.

Fastener installation technology

Very often, plastic skirting boards are installed with fasteners. In this case, if necessary, the old planks can be quickly removed and replaced with new ones. Laying is done as follows:

  1. Special clips are attached to the wall. The step between them should be about 30-40cm. On curved surfaces, installation can be done more often;

The bar is attached to special clips

  1. The bar is very easy to attach. Opposite each clip, you should hit it with your fist so that it snaps into place.

Sticking floor skirting boards with liquid nails

Do-it-yourself installation of plastic skirting boards using liquid nails is used quite rarely. Indeed, in this case, it will be impossible to quickly dismantle the decorative strips and move them to another place or change them. Installing planks in this way can only be done on perfectly flat walls. The glue is applied in drops in increments of about a meter. Next, the plinth is pressed against the wall and held in this way for about ten minutes until the glue sets.

Installing floor plinths with liquid nails

On a note: You can put stripes in a similar way directly on the wallpaper. In this case, you should be more careful so as not to stain the wall decoration.

You can also strengthen floor skirting boards on curved walls. However, in this case, before installing the strips, a leveling strip is first attached to their surface using the same dowels.

Installation without splice

You now know how to glue a plinth to the floor or attach it to self-tapping screws using corner elements. However, screwing the planks can be done in another way. In this case, the elements in the corners are attached end-to-end and closed decorative overlay. at an angle of 45 degrees, this is done using a miter box.

Without the use of corner elements, the planks are attached with trimming at an angle of 45 degrees

Before sawing, both inserts are removed from the baseboard. After completing the installation of the planks, you need to insert one of them so that its middle hits the joint. The second is cut at an angle of 45 degrees. Then the halves are attached to the whole insert.

How to attach floor skirting boards with cable duct

We have discussed how to attach a plastic skirting board. Elements with are attached in exactly the same way as regular ones. However, before installation, you need to remove the decorative strip covering the cable. After installing the strips on the wall, you will need to put it back.

The plinth with cable channel is attached with preliminary dismantling of the decorative strip

We hope you now understand how to nail plastic skirting boards. The video demonstrates how they are attached step by step:

Important: All elements are attached to the walls if they are covered with plasterboard, MDF or PVC boards, on the lower profile metal frame or on the lower beam of the sheathing.

Installation of wooden floor plinth

Installation of floor plinths, if they are made of solid wood, can also be done using self-tapping screws or liquid nails. In the first case, holes are drilled in the wall. Then they are inserted wooden corks. After this, the baseboard needs to be nailed or drilled with screws, pressing it tightly.

How to install a floor plinth. Fastening wooden planks with screws

Advice: Fastened when installed with a docking at an angle, and not vertically. To do this, the strips are cut in a miter box.

How to glue wood to the wall? For installation, you can also use liquid nails made in Russia, Belgium or Turkey. Veneered floor plinths and the MDF version should be laid in exactly the same way as solid plinths.

This is how skirting boards are installed. The video shows how wooden strips are attached to nails:

Important: No more than three electrical wires can be laid under a regular wooden floor plinth or MDF planks.

How to attach a polyurethane floor plinth

We looked at how to nail a plastic baseboard and a wooden baseboard. Now let's see how to install decorative ones. It would be best to install such planks on walls that are devoid of any decorative covering. The strip is coated with glue, pressed tightly against the wall and held there for several minutes.

Installation of planks on coverings made of different materials

There are some features of installing floor plinths on different materials. Next, let's see how this one is attached. decorative element on parquet, carpet, tiles and linoleum.

Installation on parquet and laminate

Parquet is a very expensive finish. Therefore, installing a floor plinth on it yourself should be done with the utmost care so as not to scratch the flooring tiles. In this case, it is better to nail the baseboard. It is worth drilling holes in the plank first so that it does not split when driven in. The nail heads are sunk into the wood and sealed on top with putty. The wooden floor plinth is attached to the laminate in the same way. Plastic version installed on this material in the usual manner.

Installation on linoleum and carpet

Often used for linoleum and carpet special kind floor plinth, which is a decorative strip with a border on top. In order to beautifully combine the floor plinth with the covering, you should cut a strip from the carpet or linoleum with a width equal to the width of the groove in the plinth intended for it. Next, the plinth is attached to the wall with self-tapping screws. It is removed from him protective film. Carpet or linoleum is laid close to it. After this, the cut strip is glued to the bar.

The plinth is attached to the carpet in several stages

This is how floor skirting boards are installed. You now also know how to attach (the video demonstrates the installation process) them to carpet and linoleum.

Installation on tiles

It is attached to the tile like this:

  1. The glue is diluted (according to the instructions on the package);
  2. The mixture is applied to reverse side baseboards (the length of which is equal to the length of the tiles) with a notched rubber spatula;
  3. The plank is applied to the wall, aligned with the already laid tiles and tapped rubber mallet. Crosses are inserted between the strips at the joints;
  4. The joints are being grouted.

Ceramic strips are attached with special glue

As you can see, attaching the plinth to the floor is not a difficult procedure in any case. By following the required technologies, you will receive a neat finished floor finish.

The question of how to attach a plastic floor plinth is very important. The fact is that this type of product is most often used for final finishing of premises. There are currently several technological methods that are suitable for specific situation. Please note that installation must be carried out on a prepared surface.

Much attention must be paid to the preparation stage. Due to the fact that the plastic skirting board is installed on decorated surfaces, the installation site is already ready for work. But you need to select the necessary components:

  1. Corner pads. They make it possible to make corner connections without cutting parts. This option allows you to get rid of tedious pruning and get more aesthetic appearance. For this process, caps are provided for internal and external corners.
  2. End caps. Often the floor plinth ends next to doorways, but there are other areas, for example, built-in furniture. It is to form a beautiful ending that caps are used. It should be taken into account that they come in left and right versions.
  3. Butt joints. Used to hide the junction of two parts. They have small grooves into which each of the edges of the planks is installed. It is important to take into account that this option creates a visual division of the overall canvas.

On a note! Installation of each additional part occurs at a certain stage of installation. It is important to calculate their location in advance and take into account that they take up several millimeters.

Before attaching plastic skirting boards to the surface, you should also prepare the tools necessary for the job. An individual set is selected for each specific situation.

Product trimming

Proper trimming of the material used affects the final result. Therefore, when a problem arises, how to fix the plinth bigger size, you need to use simple tips:

  • What to cut with? For this process, a metal saw with a blade having small teeth is used. As an alternative, you can use an electric jigsaw, to which special files are selected.
  • When the parts have already been fastened, but there is a need for minor adjustments, use a sharp construction knife. This device must be used very carefully so as not to damage the front side.
  • It is advisable to cut the plinth only after careful measurements. For cutting under the right angle use a miter box.

Trimming the plinth: outer and inner corners, arrangement of parts in the miter box

Such simple tips significantly facilitate the process and allow you to install elements with the highest quality.

Mounting options

Do-it-yourself installation of plastic skirting boards various methods. But before starting the installation process, you should make sure that all basic work is completed. To avoid distortions and defects, the space between the wall and the floor is cleared of excess debris. Any pieces building material or dirt must be completely removed.

Glue mount

Mounting parts with glue is quite simple; this procedure does not require special skills. But it has its own characteristics that must be taken into account.

  1. Surfaces must be prepared in advance. That is, all areas must be carefully leveled and must not have any defects.
  2. It is necessary to provide in advance further actions. Removing adhesive-mounted skirting board material can be difficult because the likelihood of damage increases decorative surface walls or floor.
  3. After some time, parts may begin to separate.
  4. Difficulties often arise due to the fact that the products are fixed exclusively to the walls; fixation to the floor is not provided.

When deciding to install skirting boards using glue, it is important to take into account the numerous disadvantages of this method.

Therefore, this method is most suitable for cosmetic repairs that are planned to be redone in a few years. In this case, the best option would be the cheapest plastic floor skirting board that does not have connectors for hidden installation or installation on clips.

The tools you need to prepare include a construction gun for using compounds in tubes, glue or liquid nails, rags and sandpaper.

Technological order:

  1. Calculated required amount strips, taking into account the location of the connecting elements.
  2. Since the solution will be applied to the back surface, it is lightly rubbed with sandpaper to increase adhesion for better fastening.
  3. The glue is distributed evenly in several lines, which are located at some distance from each other.
  4. Each part is pressed to the selected location, immediately torn off and finally installed after a few minutes. It is necessary to achieve maximum adherence to the floor and wall.
  5. Excess glue is immediately removed using a rag.

On a note! Tear-off and subsequent final installation depends on the chosen adhesive composition; many solutions do not require such a procedure.

Fixation with dowels and screws

This method is considered one of the most popular. This is facilitated by a number of advantages that it has:

  • Fast fixation of the part. The operating time will depend on the existing base.
  • The fixation will be the most durable. Even over time, gaps will not appear.
  • Possibility of fastening to uneven areas. Screws installed through a smaller gap will ensure the desired tightness.

To work, you will need a screwdriver with bits or a set of screwdrivers, an awl, a hammer drill or impact drill, dowels and self-tapping screws. In cases where parts are nailed to walls, nails and a hammer are needed.

Fixing the baseboard with dowels and self-tapping screws is the most popular option for installing a floor product

Everything should be prepared in advance so that during the work you are not distracted by searching for the necessary devices.

Instructions for installing floor elements:

  1. It all starts with the markup. It is necessary to note the location of the part taking into account the installed corner element, this will help to avoid mistakes in the future.
  2. The first fragment is most often installed without trimming. It is important to consider that corner overlays eliminate the need to form a corner, but hide the space.
  3. Due to the fact that the process uses plinths with a cable channel, which allows hidden mount, the plug is first removed.
  4. The inner part does not have prepared holes. Therefore, they are marked using an awl with the required pitch and drilled out with a suitable drill.
  5. The part is placed in place and set according to the existing markings. The location of the holes is transferred to the surface.
  6. If the base is sufficiently solid, then preliminary drilling is performed in order to install dowels.
  7. The product should be attached carefully so as not to cause damage when tightening the screws. It is important to ensure a tight fit to the floor.

But how to nail the baseboard? Indeed, the use of nails complicates the process a little. In order not to damage the plastic parts, use a screwdriver or other suitable device.

Installation on strips

Currently, plastic floor skirting boards, which have a separate structure, are increasingly used for work. That is, on the wrong side there is a special strip that is used for fixation. How to attach such options?

Some features need to be taken into account:

  • It is these products that are attached both to the wall and to the floor. To do this, the back bar must be L-shaped.
  • Installation does not require much time. You don’t have to worry about the fact that the main part will be damaged during the installation process.
  • The overlay element can be quickly removed if necessary.
  • The voids can be used for laying communications.

Thus, we get an excellent option that is gradually replacing other varieties.

Installation algorithm:

  1. The products are divided into two fragments.
  2. Preliminary markings are made for the installation strips. In most cases, this procedure is performed according to the instructions included in the kit. In its absence required sizes removed from the part.
  3. Holes are made on the fixing element if they were not made by the manufacturer. Their location is transferred to the surface. If the shape is L-shaped, the fastening can be carried out to the floor covering.
  4. After installation, all that remains is to secure the outer part.

Thus, when deciding how to install a plastic skirting board, you can choose exactly the method that will be suitable for a particular situation.

The plinth is one of the main decorative elements of the room. It gives the floor an aesthetic appearance, hides cracks and allows you to disguise wires. Today, wooden and plastic skirting boards are most in demand, but there are many other types. This article will discuss how to choose and how to properly attach the plinth to the floor.

Types of plastic skirting boards for floors

Plastic skirting boards are divided into two types - universal and for carpet. Universal applicable to all types of coating (laminate, wooden floor, tile and linoleum).

To fasten the carpet, use an “L”-shaped plinth. He presses carpet covering to the floor, preventing it from rolling off, and at the same time, performs a decorative function.

Based on the composition of the material, plastic skirting boards come in four types:

  • hard made of foamed PVC. This type It is elastic, not hollow, but breaks easily.

  • hollow made of rigid PVC. They have high strength, but lower quality. To a greater extent, they are intended for simple decoration of premises without pretensions to sophistication.

  • skirting boards made of semi-rigid PVC. Their composition is the same as foam. But they are distinguished by the high flexibility of the material and are sold in the form of tape in rolls. They have an aesthetic appearance, a wide range of colors, and can also imitate any natural materials.

Which type of skirting board is better - plastic or wooden?

Wooden plinths are environmentally friendly, but have a shorter service life. Plastic is made from synthetic PVC, but its service life reaches 100 years. Compared to their wooden counterparts, they have a number of advantages and are a serious competitor to other types of skirting boards.

Advantages of plastic skirting boards:

  • Possibility of use in absolutely any room from the bedroom to the bathroom. And a huge selection of colors will not be difficult to choose best option for each room;
  • Compared to wooden ones, plastic skirting boards are more flexible and durable. They cut well and are easy to install;
  • are not flammable, which makes them safer;
  • have excellent moisture resistance, making them easy to wash;
  • have an affordable price.

In addition to all of the above, most models of plastic skirting boards have a special groove for laying wires.

Based on the above differences, we can conclude that in most cases, plastic skirting boards are preferable to wooden ones. Naturally, there are exceptions when the design of the room involves the use of exclusively natural materials.

But you also have to choose among plastic models best option. As a rule, according to appearance they are practically no different from wooden ones.

The classic option is a plinth with special fasteners and a hole for the cable. Its main advantage is that it hides wires and baseboard attachment points, and is also very easy to install. The second option is a plinth with solid plastic construction, which is attached using clips.

The choice of one type or another depends on taste preferences and financial capabilities.

Components

Component elements include internal and external corners, connections and plugs. They have various shapes and coloring depending on the type of baseboard.

  • With the help of corners, skirting boards are connected in the corners of the room, which gives an aesthetic overall appearance.
  • Interplinth joints are designed to extend the planks and to join them together. They are a piece of plastic with two slots for joining.
  • Caps are needed to decorate the edges. For example, in places where the baseboard meets the doors. They come in two types, left and right, and are usually sold complete with a plinth.

Additional components include fasteners with which the planks are attached to the wall.

How to attach a plinth to the floor with your own hands

Today, there are three ways to attach plinths: main task which is high-quality and durable fixation to the wall.

Glue mount. It is not suitable for all rooms. In the case where the walls and corners are uneven, there is a very high probability that the baseboard will fall off the wall. But if the walls are smooth and all corners are 90 degrees, then this is the best option.

Installation using special latches that secure the baseboard. This method suitable in absolutely any conditions. The main disadvantage of this type of fastening is that the latches do not withstand repeated installation, and after dismantling the baseboard you will need to buy new ones.

The last method involves direct fastening. The plinth is simply screwed to the wall with screws. The fasteners will be visible, but they can be disguised using special plugs matched by color. Also, the fastening points will not be noticeable if you use a plinth with a special groove for laying electrical wires. In this case, they are covered with a decorative cover designed to mask the wires. This method is the cheapest and most reliable of all of the above.

Tools required for work

To install skirting boards, you will need tools that are best prepared in advance:

  • hacksaw for metal;
  • awl (for making holes);
  • roulette;
  • pencil or pen;
  • construction corner;
  • drill with the necessary drill bits;
  • screwdriver with the necessary attachment;
  • hammer drill (if work is carried out in a brick house).

Calculation of the required amount of materials

Before proceeding with installation, you will need to calculate the amount of materials that will be required during the fastening process.

First, measure the room along the perimeter (excluding the width of the doorway from the calculations). To determine the required number of skirting boards, the resulting number is divided by the length of one strip. There must be a supply of material of at least 0.5 m, which will be quite enough. The number of required corners is equal to the number of them in a particular room. And the number of plugs will be equal to the number of doors multiplied by two. To calculate the fastening elements, take the total perimeter of the room and divide it by 50 cm. You will need the same number of screws or dowels as fasteners, plus 10 pieces in reserve.

When making calculations, it is necessary to make reserves of 2 or 3 mm, and also take into account the reserve for corners and joining of skirting boards.

Installation with liquid nails

To work, you need to prepare a plastic file, liquid nails, decorative corner elements, plugs and the baseboard itself.

When starting installation with liquid nails, you need to carefully level the walls, this will allow you to attach them more reliably and efficiently. It is advisable that they be covered with plasterboard or professionally puttied.

Installation of the plinth begins from one of the corners. Liquid nails are applied to the leveled wall in the form of drops at a distance of about 3 or 5 cm from each other. Next, a connecting element is glued to the free edge - this will simplify further work.

Tip: for greater ease of use, the adhesive is applied not to the wall, but directly to the plank.

Then the baseboard itself is glued to the wall. It is important to ensure that its edge fits snugly to next wall. It will need to be pressed and held in this position for about one minute until the adhesive sets. After this, you can proceed to the installation of the next section.

In order for it to hold well in the future, it should be attached to high-quality liquid nails (you should not skimp on this).

Installation using special fasteners (clips)

This fastening method is the most expensive and time-consuming process, but the result is perfect installed baseboard. Everything is mounted on clips existing species skirting boards, while no high demands are placed on the evenness of the walls. Just with more uneven walls you will need to attach the clips at smaller intervals from each other.

Stages of work

First, the approximate distance of the fastenings is marked on the wall. To do this, in the place of future fixation fastening elements, one of the “clips” is pressed tightly against the wall and the floor and a mark is made with a pencil.

Then a hole is drilled in the wall approximately 0.5-1 cm deep (but larger than the length of the dowel). Using a hammer, the dowel is driven into the wall and a clip is applied to the resulting hole and screwed with a screw.

After this, you can proceed to installation of the next fastening device. On wooden walls, the clips are attached to self-tapping screws. The above method is suitable for fixing clips in concrete and brick walls. If the room has smooth walls, then subsequent clips should be attached every 0.5 m. But on uneven surface they should be located after 0.2-0.4 m, depending on the curvature of the walls.

After installing the clip, the baseboard itself is installed. First you need to measure its length. If it turns out to be longer than the required segment, then it is shortened to the required size.

To attach the bar to the clips, you just need to attach it to the clips and snap onto them. This is done by pressing the baseboard until it clicks. Next, a spacer is placed on the free edge of the plinth. After this, installation of the next section begins. The new strip is first inserted into the spacer, and then also snapped onto the clips.

When work around the entire perimeter of the room is completed, you will need to attach decorative corners and caps. The corners are attached by simply sliding onto the joint of two skirting boards in the corner, and the plugs are put on the free part of the skirting board near the door.

For better articulation of corners and plugs, they can be connected using liquid nails; this will help improve the quality of the connection and provide an additional guarantee that the corners and plugs will not fall off.

For fastening carpet or linoleum, skirting boards are produced equipped with special recesses for filling the edges of the coverings, which allow replacing the floor covering without dismantling them.

Fastening by drilling through the baseboard

  • To secure the baseboard using this method, you will need a drill, self-tapping screws and a plastic file. The method is applicable for installing skirting boards in secondary rooms.
  • First produced necessary measurements, as described above.
  • A piece of plinth of the required size is prepared.
  • Holes are drilled in it. They must be narrower than the “head” of the screw, otherwise the baseboard will not hold.
  • The plank is pressed against the wall and fastened with frosts.

  • If there is no cable channel, you can add aesthetics to the screw heads using decorative overlays.

If the walls are stone, then the baseboard should be fastened using dowels. To do this, you need to drill holes in the wall and align them with the holes in the baseboard. After which the plinth is attached to the wall with screws.

Installation of cable under the baseboard

Absolutely any wires can be laid under the baseboard (telephone and television cables). There are three ways to do this:

  • The first method is to lay the cable under the “clip” fastening devices. The main thing when using this method is not to touch the cable with a self-tapping screw.

  • with the second method, after installing the plinth, the screws are loosened by 5-7 mm. Then the cable is laid to the wall and fixed.

  • The third method is based on laying the cable in a special groove, followed by closing the cable with a decorative cover.

Hidden cable routing can be done when using any model of plastic skirting boards. But when laying electrical wires, it is necessary to turn off the mains voltage.

Cost of plastic skirting boards and components

Plastic skirting boards have been able to quite displace construction market wooden. They have proven themselves to be good quality and easy to install products. But high demand caused prices to rise in last years. Their cost consists of several factors. As a rule, this is the fame of the manufacturer, the type of baseboard and its color.

The price of a universal plastic plinth varies from 60 to 90 rubles per 2.5 m. A plinth with a cable trough costs from 40 to 70 rubles per 2.5 m, and without a gutter from 30 to 50 rubles. Clips are sold in packs of 50 pieces, their price ranges from 200 to 500 rubles, depending on the manufacturer. The cheapest components are plugs, which cost between 20-30 rubles.

Below is approximate cost and sizes of plastic skirting boards for the floor.

Installing a plinth is a responsible issue that requires care and adherence to profile installation technology. Firstly, because it has an aesthetic function, because a correctly selected plinth gives the room a finished, harmonious and well-groomed look, and secondly, it performs a purely practical task, closing the joint between the wall and the floor.

Shaped profiles for floors made of plastic, wood, MDF, polyurethane, stone, expanded clay and even metal hide not only technological grooves and finishing defects, but are also a significant part of the interior of the room, correct installation floor plinth is a chord of good repair. In the article we will look in detail: how, where, with what, in what way and which skirting board to install, and what installation features will have to be encountered depending on the type of flooring.

Installing a wooden profile has its own characteristics; before gluing the plinth to the floor, you need to connect the corners correctly

Where to attach

The choice of skirting boards for the floor is very large; the planks differ in their shape, size and configuration, as well as in the material from which they are made. We will also talk about the peculiarities of fastening depending on the material and shape in our article, but now we will figure out where to properly fasten the plinth.

The presence of two planes: the wall and the floor, determines two methods of attaching the plinth. How do you know which installation option is preferable? The simplest solution to the problem is to attach the floor profile to the surface where it is easier to drive the fasteners.

If the house is wooden, the floors are concrete, and the screed is cement, or the house is made of cellular concrete, and the floors are wooden, then it is logical to attach the baseboard to wooden surfaces, in the first case - install it to the walls, in the second - to the floor. If all the surfaces are concrete, you need to attach the plinth where it is more convenient for you to drill holes for the dowels. Here, the installation mainly depends on the tool and your preferences.

Installation of plastic skirting boards is greatly facilitated by additional elements

Nowadays it is very popular to decorate walls with plasterboard, build partitions from it, and level it with plaster; in this case, it is recommended to attach the plinth to a concrete or wooden floor. If the floors are in front finishing covered with chipboard, OSB and gypsum plasterboard, then the planks are attached to concrete or wooden wall. This measure is necessary because the fastening in these materials becomes loose over time, the dowel comes out of the hole, the baseboard moves away from the wall, resulting in an unsightly gap and the aesthetic appearance of the room is lost. Well, if the walls are made of gypsum plasterboard, and the floor is OSB, gypsum plasterboard, chipboard, then all that remains is to use a special butterfly dowel, which will reliably fix the fastening. Also, with this installation, it is possible to attach the plinth to the floor to wooden joists, or to the walls to the metal sheathing profile using special screws.

What to attach to

When the plane is selected, the question arises: what to attach the floor plinth to?

The fastest and easiest way to install skirting boards is with liquid nails. Enough to process adhesive composition the back side of the baseboard and press the strip firmly against the wall or floor. But, firstly, this method of fastening is not suitable for skirting boards made of fragile materials, such as MDF, and secondly, this is a “forever” installation method; the profile cannot be removed and used if something goes wrong, or in the future repair.

All subsequent methods of installing skirting boards require drilling. Let us immediately note that the optimal gap between fasteners is 300-500 mm. The dowel-nail should penetrate 30 mm into the floor or wall, but if the surfaces are uneven, then it is better to choose a 3.5 * 40 self-tapping screw, with a No. 6 dowel attached to it.

Advice: If the plinth is not provided with a special fastening strip or recesses for the clip, then the length of the screw should be equal to the length of the dowel plus the thickness of the plinth.

Inexpensive models made of MDF and wood, as well as some plastic skirting boards, are fastened with self-tapping screws or nails, which are driven directly over the decorative layer, penetrating the entire body of the profile. To ensure that the installation is carried out accurately, after drilling the base, hammer in the dowels, attach the plinth to the place of fixation, and transfer the drilling points to the plinth. Then, strictly according to the markings, drill through the strip with a thin drill, then take a drill of a larger diameter and make a countersink - a recess for the head of a screw or nail. Place the profile in place and attach it. You can hide the fasteners with special stickers and a wax pencil if the baseboard already has decorative coating, wood and MDF are puttied with a special compound for painting, then painted.

Hidden installation methods

IN modern models skirting boards have recesses for clips (usually these are profiles made of wood and MDF), plastic and metal profiles have a special load-bearing element, which is fixed to the base, after which the upper decorative strip is fixed to it.

Installing the clip is very simple: first, holes are drilled around the perimeter of the room and a plastic dowel is inserted into them. Then a clip is applied and secured with a self-tapping screw. When all the clips are installed, apply veneer or wooden baseboard and with a simple press it locks into place. If necessary, the profile can be easily removed and reattached.

Installation of floor plinths with clips

The starting base under the plastic and metallic profile. Before attaching the plastic plinth, the load-bearing surface is marked for dowels. When all the holes in the wall or floor are drilled and the plastic dowels are installed, the plank is applied to the installation site, and the drilling points are transferred to it. Then holes are made according to the markings, and the base is attached to the load-bearing surface, after which the decorative part of the plinth is snapped into place.

How to install a floor plinth that has a fixing strip in its design

Advice: Do not tighten the screw a couple of turns with the drill so that starting bar did not crack from excessive effort. It is better to secure the base tightly manually with a screwdriver.

Polyurethane, duropolymer and ceramic skirting boards are attached to the base using special glue or polyurethane foam. If the walls are smooth, before attaching the plinth to the floor, you can paste wallpaper, but if the surface has visible defects, then first it is leveled, and only then the plinth is installed. Next, watch the secrets of the masters, how to install skirting boards correctly, video tips will help you stick the profile in an unusual way, quickly and very carefully.

Features of installing skirting boards made of MDF and wood

Installation of profiles made of wood and MDF is complicated by the fact that these models do not have joining elements, therefore, in addition to a tape measure, a pencil, a construction angle and a drill, you will need a special miter box for filing corners and a hacksaw.

It is better to start installing a wooden floor plinth from the doorway, from left to right.

First, we cut two profiles at an internal angle. When you are convinced that the joint is even, measure the distance to the opening on one strip, draw it, and saw it off at a right angle. The second plank, along a long wall, fits entirely so that the joints are invisible and do not spoil the interior of the room after installation; it must be sawn at the other end at an angle of 45 degrees. All ends are carefully sanded. After the parts are adjusted, they are attached to the base using screws or nails. Fitting and installing subsequent skirting boards is done in the same way. After the baseboards are installed, the cracks are filled with putty, the surface is sanded, and then the topcoat can be applied.

So how to install wooden elements it is very difficult without certain skills, we suggest you see how to properly install floor skirting boards, how to fasten them, video instructions step by step will help you understand the intricacies of the process.

Installation of plastic plinth

Installing plastic skirting boards with your own hands is much easier than installing their wooden counterparts; these models are equipped with corners, plugs, and joining elements, so you don’t have to saw down the corner. In addition, the profile is equipped with a base that is attached to the wall, and only then a decorative cover is put into the grooves, which has soft edges along the entire length, so when installed, it is pressed tightly against the surfaces, and there are no technical holes on the front side.

The plastic skirting boards begin to be attached from the corner along the long wall, so that during installation there will be as little scraps as possible. When the wall is marked and drilled, and the dowels are installed, the decorative element is removed from the baseboard, the base is applied to the installation site, and the markings are transferred to it. Next, an internal corner element is placed on the end, and the profile is screwed to the wall. If the walls have smooth curves, then the plank can be easily bent during installation, since the material is very flexible.

A connecting strip is put on the other end, the next profile is applied and installed. If it is larger than necessary, the required distance is measured, 2-3 mm are subtracted from each side, the profile is sawed to size at an angle of 90°, the ends are processed with a file or sandpaper. At one end the plinth is installed into the connecting element, at the opposite end a corner is placed (external or internal depends on the geometry of your room), after which the base is secured. When the base is installed along the entire perimeter of the room, the cable is laid in special grooves, after which the upper element is fixed, and plugs are installed near the opening.

Installation of plastic skirting boards does not require sawing at the profile joints at an angle

Advice: In complex and large rooms, it is better to lay the cable as the baseboards are installed, so you do not have to pull it through the cable channel along the entire perimeter.

Secrets of success

We have already found out that the choice of which plane to attach the plinth to depends on the physical and mechanical properties of the base. But for each type of flooring there are also rules for how to install a profile.

For example, if you decide to lay laminate or parquet, then the baseboard is attached exclusively to the wall. Before attaching the plinth to the laminate, make sure that there is a technical gap between the flooring and the wall, which is necessary to avoid deformation if the laminate expands during use. Veneered and wooden plinths are installed, as a rule, on a floor made of solid wood, laminate or parquet; if the wall has minor defects or unevenness, then it is recommended, in addition to clips, to attach the profile to parquet studs. For floors made of porcelain stoneware or other tiles, it is better to install skirting boards made of the same material; they are attached to the wall with tile adhesive, then the joints are puttied. For fastening skirting boards to self-leveling floors and surfaces made of artificial stone There is a special glue that matches the color very closely to the original material.

Correctly selected and installed plinth fits harmoniously into the interior

In children's rooms and in rooms with a large glass area, it is better to install a warm baseboard. For bathrooms, loggias and other rooms with a specific microclimate ideal option are pvc profiles that do not absorb moisture.

We have discussed several ways of how to install a floor plinth; the video and photos in the article explain everything step by step technological nuances fastening the planks from different materials. By by and large, the secret to the success of the installation lies in the accuracy of the fastening and in the correct selection of skirting boards in shape, material, size and color for different floor coverings.
