Furniture with a secret

 17:00 June 27, 2016

Some pieces of furniture seem to have come straight out of a science fiction or spy movie: in fact, they are not at all what they seem. This cannot be said to be a modern invention - furniture with additional secret functions has been made since ancient times. Various hiding places and secret drawers are often found inside antique furniture that has survived to this day. Tables, dressing tables, chests of drawers and cabinets created by ancient masters usually had a dual purpose: they were not only used, but also money, documents and jewelry were safely hidden in them from prying eyes and intruders, which was vital in those turbulent times.

In France in the 18th century they even began to produce the new kind furniture - secretaries. The name itself suggests that these interior items were intended to keep the owner’s secrets. As a rule, these were miniature bureaus with many visible and hidden shelves and drawers and a folding table top, used as desk.

The boxes were often equipped with secret locks and secret locking mechanisms. Among antique dealers and collectors of antiques, there are many legends about untold riches accidentally discovered after pressing some inconspicuous stud inside an antique secretary. Or how an antique secretary, having changed many owners, fell into the hands of experienced specialist, who was able to figure out the location of the cache, searched for a long time for a way to open it, and, of course, eventually discovered a secret box full of ancient treasures.

But even today, the romance of secrets and mysteries has not gone away - people still like to create unexpected and original places to store valuables. And for a number of reasons, the easiest way to do this is in furniture and other interior items. Some caches cannot be created without help good master-furniture maker, in some cases furniture is already sold with secret niches for storage, but there are also ways to reliably hide something inside ordinary furniture itself.

Hiding places in ordinary furniture

The simplest example is if you need to securely hide an envelope or a flat package, simply tape it to the bottom of the drawer on the bottom side. In most cases, even if someone goes through all the drawers of your desk, they will hardly think to look under them. For greater confidence, use the lowest drawer so that inspecting its bottom is also physically inconvenient.

The same principle applies to hiding places under the seats of chairs, however, in our opinion, this is less reliable: chairs are often lifted to be rearranged, and they can also accidentally fall. Therefore, there is a very high probability of quickly discovering such a cache, and this one is better original way storage to be used for something not very valuable.

It is also quite common to store valuables in a piano. By its design, this musical instrument has a lot inside free space, which can be perfectly used to place anything: from household supplies to important documents. Of course, provided that there is no professional musician living in your family who will not allow you to treat the instrument so frivolously.

Hiding places are often installed under furniture - in the empty space between the legs, which is covered by a decorative facade. Someone builds a convenient drawer there. Or you can simply find a flat box of suitable size, put valuables in it and put it away under the closet. You can also make the simplest double bottom inside a drawer yourself.

Ready-made furniture with hidden niches

Naturally, not all ready-made furniture can be used to store valuables - most often it is simply intended for the convenient placement of ordinary household items. For example, in an ottoman in the hallway it is very convenient to neatly lay out shoes, and in ottomans or banquettes in the bedroom or living room - those things that are often used in these rooms.

The same applies to storage under the bed - you won’t get a full-fledged hiding place from this place, but you can put away unnecessary ones in this moment items are very convenient.

Among the ready-made furniture intended for secret storage of valuables, special shelves and tabletops should be noted. From their appearance it is impossible to guess that there is a hiding place inside.

Wall mirrors and paintings special design can also become an excellent hiding place, which is almost impossible to detect. Also, real safes are sometimes disguised as paintings.

Another way to create a hiding place at home is to purchase a secret drawer or safe disguised as an outlet.

Do-it-yourself or custom-made caches

It is very popular to place caches made from books on bookshelves. This does not require any special skills or expensive materials - the main thing is to choose the spines of the books in such a way that they look harmonious among the other publications on the shelf and do not attract attention to themselves.

You can try creating your own simple secret storage spaces inside or under countertops.

Other, more complex projects are made to order from a good craftsman. This applies to secret drawers or special secret niches for storing various furniture inside.

Furniture that retains the breath of old times gives our apartments a special flavor. In this section we will mainly talk about the secretary, but not about the one that we all know as an integral part of a modern furniture wall, but about how our ancestors imagined this piece of furniture many years ago. A home craftsman with some carpentry experience is quite capable of making such a desk along with an extension.

The table shape, tabletop area and extension are small in size. Therefore, the secretary will not take up much space in the room and can be placed somewhere near the wall, and maybe in front of the window.

In our design we will be dealing with shaped parts, small drawers, etc. To make them we will need pieces of plywood board or thick plywood.

The secretary shown in Fig. 20 should be considered only as one of the options. Your own taste and the material you have will tell you a variety of variations of this model. First, let's determine the main dimensions of our future design. Table height – 75–78 cm (top edge height), extension height – at least 40 cm, tabletop width – 120–140 cm, depth – 60–80 cm. When manufacturing various parts, you must first draw up an accurate sketch of them. For curly sidewalls and corners, it is necessary to make templates in advance and transfer the shapes with a soft pencil to the material.

Rice. 20. Secretary

Now some instructions for making a secretary. The table consists of two sidewalls, which are also the supporting legs of the table top, a frame of drawers and a thick rail that strengthens the structure and is placed in the lower rear third of the table. We connect the frame and tabletop to the sidewalls using dowels in the same way as the crossbars, which act as special legs. We connect the back support strip to the sidewalls using cuts and, after gluing, also with screws. In accordance with the specified width of the drawers, we insert shutter strips between the slats. To the extension, consisting of sidewalls, top board and back wall, we add various drawers on both sides. Since our design uses different material, it is recommended to paint the secretary, preferably in two brown tones that go well with each other.

The figure below shows how, without a special tool, you can make specified shapes for a secretary from existing material. First, use a hacksaw to make the marked cuts before starting to carve. Then, using a chisel, we hollow out part of the material (on both sides), and then make oblique cuts. We finish the grooves and roundings with a rasp.

Screen in everyday life

It seems that the screen in the middle of the room has finally gone out of fashion. However, screens can be used in our daily lives. They allow you to partition or close something.

Our first recommendation concerns a screen, with which you can equip a convenient workplace. Two workstations in a narrow children's room, equipped with a side to the window, give two children the opportunity to study without distraction. The partition can be made from old material you have. If we are building a new partition, it is recommended to make a frame from slats (2 cm thick and 6–7 cm wide), interconnected at the ends with an overlap. If a large structure is planned, it is necessary to provide transverse rigid fastening, especially if we (as indicated in Fig. 21) also want to equip small shelves on the partitions.

Rice. 21. Screen

We carefully sheathe the frame on both sides with TDVP. We make small shelves from pieces of boards 12–15 cm wide, nailed together at right angles. The shelves should be positioned in such a way that they are supported by transverse connections, which are secured with screws screwed into the other side of the partition. Since the shelves are not opposite each other, you can hang a tear-off calendar or attach a writing board on the screw heads on the other side.

At certain intervals we screw in small hooks. We attach lamps to the top of our structure to provide the necessary lighting. In order for the partition to have a strong support, support bars are used as legs (as can be seen from the figure).

Another option for using a screen is shown in the figure below. The screen can be used by placing it in front of the crib to protect from light and noise. It is also useful in the garden to temporarily fence off, for example, a swimming pool. To do this, we build frames approximately 180 cm high, which are upholstered on one side with any padded material. The upholstery can be mats, straw matting, awnings, burlap (which, by the way, can be painted in a very original way) or even cardboard, which can be covered with wallpaper. The frames form a screen using plug hinges.

To use the screen on outdoors At the bottom of each frame we attach two long pins that stick into the ground. By using tent pegs (as indicated in the right picture below), the screen is installed so firmly that no wind will blow it away.

Multi-purpose lockers

As we noted earlier, when furnishing apartments, one often has to deal with the fact that the furniture available for sale does not quite correspond to the size of the premises. Often a section of the wall remains unoccupied, although it could be rationally filled with some piece of furniture. One solution to this problem is a homemade cabinet with shelves. This locker is extremely useful thing. It can be used, for example, to design youth room, corner of the room or as a TV stand. Its appearance should, of course, be in harmony with all the other furniture in the room.

It is advisable to use parts of a well-preserved old cabinet as a material. If you plan to paint the cabinet in advance, this greatly simplifies its manufacture, since nails and screws are used to connect the parts; however, you should always recess their heads. The holes must be filled with wood putty and, after setting, the surface must be sanded with sandpaper. If we want to do without nails and screws, the individual parts can be connected using wooden dowels.

The dimensions of the locker are determined by specific conditions. For our example, they are as follows: width – 90 cm, height – 75 cm and depth – 40 cm. The frame of the cabinet consists of two side walls, a shelf (bottom shelf), a lid, a back wall and a base. To connect the polyc to the side walls, it is best to use a closed tenon joint. To do this, the floor must be between the walls, the lid must be on the side walls (see Fig. 22 bottom left). The back wall fits into a recess that is located inside, on the side walls. We use TDVP or plywood boards as the material for this.

Each time dictates its own styles, including in furniture design. However, in addition to beauty, many interior items should also have additional functionality: have drawers, drawers and shelves. And in some cases - hiding places, small safes disguised as ordinary bedside tables, chests of drawers or other pieces of furniture, as well as built into bookcases and wardrobes.

Secretary with curved legs, decorated with carvings

Their presence always had its own meaning: here it was possible to hide something that was not necessary for others to see. And, starting from the 18th century, in any rich house one could find a secretary, or in the Russian version, a desk where the owner kept especially valuable documents: bills, money, jewelry.

Various hiding places and secret drawers are often discovered inside antique furniture that has survived to this day.

Furniture with secrets - table and cabinet with additional drawers

In past centuries, in the homes of wealthy people, a mandatory part of the office was a table or a cabinet with secret drawers, which were used to store especially important documents, money, and jewelry, which made it possible to protect them from thieves. Later in France, a special table-cabinet was invented, called a secretary, because it was really possible to store various secret documents and small valuables in it.

The drawers were often equipped with secret locks and secret locking mechanisms

The popularity of secretaries and other furniture “delicacies” equipped with various secret spaces was not accidental. Their design has its advantages that they do not have regular tables and cabinets, and features unique to such products.

They are no less relevant today: they are stored in stylized safes and hiding places. securities, expensive jewelry, important correspondence and documentation. Among the obvious advantages of such furniture are:

  • storage of valuables without access to them by strangers;
  • their arrangement in different furniture elements;
  • the possibility of making secret storage facilities with your own hands.

Among the factors characteristic of furniture with a secret, the design features of such products are highlighted, making it possible to prepare places for storing a specific type of valuables. As a rule, if hiding places are specially equipped, they are equipped with secret locks, and today - with an electronic security system.

Today, the furniture market offers products not only for personal use, but also for enterprises and organizations. In addition, it can be made to order according to individual drawings.

A hiding place arranged in these pieces of furniture is considered a classic. Making it is quite simple: you need to drill a hole of the selected size inside the furniture element. It is assumed that only one person will know about such a “secret” - the one who made it.

It is clear that the place for storing valuables equipped here does not imply a large number of them, which must be remembered to be disguised in a convenient way.

Advice. You need to make holes very carefully and not overdo it with their diameter, so as not to weaken the structure and lead to its breakage.

Video: how to make - The simplest cache

When a child grows beyond the age of plush toys and wooden rocking chairs, his growing up is not a reason to send old favorites “into exile.” But it’s worth thinking about refurbishment of the nursery. For example, a horse can be easily turned into a compact, fun secretary for a teenager. A little ingenuity, a few boards and screws, reliable tool and love for your rapidly growing child - that's what you need for this.

What materials are needed

In this case, the body frame is made of coniferous wood. The semicircular body used 42 slats measuring 3.4 x 1.8 x 100 cm, as well as plywood 27 and 18 mm thick.

For the internal structure, medium density MDF is mainly used. This gives two advantages at once: firstly, MDF with a thickness of 16 and 19 mm is sufficiently durable and works well in bending even at large sizes. Secondly, its surfaces are easy to paint. Sanding before applying paint, as a rule, is not required; only the edges, due to their high absorbency, require at least two treatments - “sandpaper” No. 100 and No. 180.

You will need a variety of screws: 4.0 x 45 mm; 4.0 x 20 mm; 3.5 x 50 mm; 3.5 x 25 mm; 3.5 x 16 mm.

You will need
cordless drill wood drill bits 3.5 and 6 mm Forstner drills 30 and 35 mm jigsaw miter box hammer chisel pencil and ruler tape carpentry and assembly glue* lighter MDF screws 19 and 16 mm plywood 27 and 18 mm lumber rubber cord rollers with guides belt for pens.

Frame

Strictly speaking, the secretary will inherit only the head and tail from his beloved wooden horse. Everything else will have to be built from scratch, using the drawing (see figure). The task will be greatly simplified if, in addition to an unnecessary toy, there is also a ready-made chest of drawers for small items that can be adapted for our purposes. No dresser? Well, okay. The drawers will work well from 16mm MDF, and the note board and both tabletops will be made from 19mm. Please note that the drawers of the chest of drawers are only 2-3 mm narrower than the corresponding recesses in the body. The outer edges of the drawers should be thoroughly rounded to make inserting the drawers easier.

Thrust rack

Before equipping a horse with many useful functions, you need to create primary design conditions for this.

1 . The length for the right stop rail on the outer cover panel should be measured to the nearest millimeter.
2 . Using a miter box, you need to cut the strip to length. The cuts should be carefully rounded.
Z. For the fastening belt screw, make a blind hole 0 35 mm, 10 mm deep, in the rail.

Note board

A great idea is to equip your secretary with a board for notes. Moreover, it does not have to be magnetic at all: perhaps, laces as fasteners are an even more interesting option.

1 . A row of holes on the board is located at a distance of 15 mm from the edge. It is necessary to note the gap at the top...
2 ...and at the bottom edge and connect the marks using a ruler. In this case, you can immediately mark the holes.
3 . Repeating holes is easily done with a wood drill (6 mm). A rubber cord will be threaded through them later.

Surface treatment

Colored enamel will not only add color to the appearance of the secretary, but will also protect the MDF from moisture and scratches.

1 . The edges of the note board need to be sanded first. It is better to round them with a sanding block to improve the paint quality.
held on.
2 . After cleaning the surfaces from dust, you should cover the edges with “2 in 1” paint. This way you can do without a primer.
3 . After drying, all that remains is to sand the painted surfaces with sanding paper No. 220 and apply another coat of paint.

Note board

A combination of screws and mounting adhesive will firmly secure the board into the secretary lid. A taut rubber cord will hold all the notes in place.

1 . Place a rubber cord (4 m) into the hole on the back of the board and secure with a knot. The ends should first be melted with a lighter.
2 . Pass the cord through all the holes; Finally, pull tight and secure the tension with a knot.
3 . Install a stop strip with a drilled blind hole over the screw of the fastening strap.

4 . For fixation, use three 4.0 x 45 mm screws. The heads should be “sunk” flush into the material.
5 . Pre-drill the center slab: approximately 10mm (1/2 the thickness of the slab) from the front edge and 60mm from the top and bottom edges.
6 . Apply a thick continuous strip of mounting glue to the thrust strip (ordinary wood glue will not work here).

7 . Place the note board in the lid and briefly press it firmly against the stop strip with glue.
8 . Screw the plate through the pre-drilled holes with two 3.5 x 50 mm screws.
9 . From the bottom of the horse body, carefully unscrew both upper wooden slats.

Retractable tabletop

Of course, even without retractable table top a secretary would be nice. But the transforming table is much cooler than the usual one.
So let's try!

1 . The roller guide must be installed in the housing on both sides at the same height.
2 . Screws 4.0 x 20 mm must be screwed in strictly perpendicularly so that their heads are exactly flush.
3 . The tabletop is supported by two slats 10x10 mm thick. You will need to pre-drill the holes with a 3.5 mm drill.

4 . When screwing the slats, make sure that they are located exactly above the guides. Secure with 3.5 x 25 mm screws.
5 . To attach the counter parts of the guides to the tabletop, use three 3.6 x 16 mm screws.
6 . Insert the tabletop with the rollers first into the guides. In this case, no screw head should interfere.

7 . And this strip forms the façade of the tabletop. To attach the handle-belt, you will have to hollow out a notch in the middle of it on the back side.
8 . Temporarily fix the rail to the body to screw it to the end of the tabletop. Pre-drill holes for screws.
9 . Unscrew the rail from the body again - it is now attached to the tabletop at the correct height.

Wardrobe with drawers

The left side of the lid has enough space for a chest of drawers. A little trick with a cord will help prevent the drawers from falling out when tilted.

1 . Place the second tabletop (which is not located on the guides) on the installed slats.
2 . Measure the depth of the cabinet with drawers on the lid. Leave approximately 2.5 cm of free space at the top and bottom.
3 . Mark the cabinet body at a distance of approximately 10 mm (1/2 the thickness of the slab) from the edge. Leave about 50mm on the side.

4 . Drill holes according to the diameter of the screws (3.5 mm) so that the side plates do not subsequently crack when screwed in.
5 . Use a countersink to deepen the holes
6 . Before joining the body parts with screws, apply a thin bead of waterproof wood glue to the contact surfaces.

7 . Similarly, connect the top board and the central parts with screws and glue.
8 . To screw the bottom, draw auxiliary lines. Spacer blocks will ensure precise perpendicularity of the drawer recesses.
9 . Rear wall, like the rest of the parts, glue and screw. This plate ensures the perpendicularity of the body.

The final

As already mentioned, the drawers are also made of 19 mm thick MDF.

When gluing it is necessary high accuracy due to the lack of fixing screws. Simple adhesive tape will help you.

1 . Instead of furniture handles, there will be holes in the drawers. To complete them accurately, make marks.

2 . Using a 30 mm Forstner drill, make holes for the handles in the drawer fronts.
3 . Now we need to glue the boxes. For fixation, use strong tape, which you will remove after the glue has dried.
4 . All edges of the drawers must be rounded using a sanding block. Don't forget to do this with inside boxes.

5 . The details of the chest of drawers are painted with “2 in 1” paint. The second layer is applied after drying and intermediate sanding.
6 . On the left (by analogy with the thrust strip), you need to make a blind hole with a diameter of 35 mm to recess the screw of the fastening belt.
7 . A second rubber cord stretched between the screwed-in hooks will prevent the drawers from falling out when the secretary lid is opened.

Transformable furniture has become popular recently due to the lack of space in small apartments for useful things.

But such pieces of furniture were invented quite a long time ago. This applies to such an interesting piece of furniture as a secretary. Despite the fact that previously living space was measured not by individual rooms, but by floors, houses and entire palaces, this multifunctional cabinet gained its popularity even then. Later, this furniture began to be replaced with heavy walls and began to be taken to dachas or simply got rid of it. Now secretaries are again at the peak of popularity, however, the variety of models allows them to be successfully fitted into almost any room. We will tell you below why it has gained such popularity and how to use a modern secretary in the interior.

Secrets of the secretary

It is believed that the first secretary was created in 1730, but the prototype of this piece of furniture appeared in XII-XIII centuries. Then it was exclusively ladies' furniture, where romantic young ladies wrote messages to their lovers, and women close to power decided the destinies of individuals and entire states. Later, men also appreciated the charm of such an unusual cabinet-table, and it was used by the highest strata of society, right up to kings and emperors. The furniture of some of them still amazes the imagination, delighting the eyes of connoisseurs in historical museums and galleries. Also, secretaries were often used by doctors, since in its numerous compartments it is convenient to store papers, medicines, and various medical devices.

It is worth noting that the secretary has always been a combination of a cabinet, a desk and a safe, and it has remained the same to this day, only its appearance, thanks to the efforts of designers and furniture manufacturers, can now be completely different. Sometimes a written secretary is compared to a bureau. However, there is one main difference between them: a secretary is a type of cabinet, i.e. storage places, and a bureau is a type of table, i.e. workplace. Thus, the main function of these multifunctional interior items is different.

Interior use

Designers have always understood the beauty of such interior items, although they could not always use them. And if a modern secretary occupies a separate place in the interior and is an independent piece of furniture, then quite recently, in Soviet times, it was often built into furniture walls or sets. Thus, a separate section or module was allocated to bookshelves, several drawers and an invariable folding tabletop, which make up the secretary. We can say that this was a version of the built-in secretary.

Advantage modern models is that they can either be part of a furniture group belonging to the same collection or skillfully matched to each other in color and style, or differ from all other pieces of furniture, being the main object or accent in the space.

The options for today's secretaries can be completely different: massive and miniature, stationary and mobile, ordinary rectangular and corner. Appearance - shape, fittings, color and other characteristics - can please people with completely different tastes.

This could be a classic desk secretary made of solid wood, an elegant console cabinet for the hallway, a multifunctional secretary for the bedroom that looks more like a chest of drawers, a modern computer desk-secretary, etc. There are specialized or, better to say, “professional” secretaries, for example, accounting, filing or library models.

The variety of models allows you to imagine a modern secretary in the interior of any room. In the office, this is an indispensable writing secretary, combining a durable tabletop with convenient storage for papers and small items. In the living room this is a storage area with the possibility of turning it into a work area. In the nursery it's comfortable spot for creativity, where all things are in order, but at the same time always at hand. Also, in all these rooms you can install a computer desk-secretary if there is no separate place for it.

Many remote workers will like this, because such interior items are designed not only for laptops, but also for desktop computers. In any case, if necessary, for example, when receiving guests, you can hide the workplace by raising the table top or closing the door if the secretary is a table in a closet.

You can use a modern secretary in the bedroom interior either to create a work area that can be easily hidden during relaxation by raising or sliding the tabletop, or to store bedding, women's magazines and other small items, as well as write plans for the next day or keep a diary every night.

The kitchen can also include a transformable cabinet such as a secretary, but still few people organize a work area here in order to work with papers or at the computer. For the kitchen, it is better to choose desks or buffets similar to secretaries with retractable or folding tabletops.

A small writing secretary on high legs can be placed in the hallway or hall so that it is convenient to put the press on it, sign bills or leave some small things (keys, change for travel, a shoehorn) so that they do not get lost.

Models for different design styles

Antique secretaries look great in classic styles interior, especially retro style, and a modern secretary - in the interior of a minimalist design, high-tech style or other modern trends. An antique writing secretary is usually massive, “pot-bellied” and solid: made of solid expensive wood and decorated with carvings. Such aristocratic furniture in dark colors is suitable for Baroque, Rococo, Art Nouveau and other classical interiors. The use of antiques or artificial aging of new furniture is also quite typical for these interior styles.

Refined furniture options with elegant shapes and original fittings are suitable for the Art Deco style. Usually secretaries for them are more like narrow ones console tables with small drawers on top. Such tables are usually made in black and white, which is one of the characteristic features of Art Deco.

A modern computer desk-secretary is presented either in a lightweight, air model, or combines a spacious bookshelf with a retractable or opening tabletop.

Such secretaries with a minimum of finishing and simple fittings are suitable for minimalism, hi-tech, pop art styles, however, the materials and colors for each option should be different. Thus, the high-tech style is characterized by translucent matte facades, gray color, laconic shape, chrome parts and technological options for transforming the table. Pop art “loves” the combination bright colors, slightly naive details, pictures or photographs on the facades. Basically, for some modern styles In the interior, you can decorate your computer desk-secretary yourself, using an inexpensive purchased model as a basis.

For ethnic styles you can choose your own shapes. Thus, it is easy to create a French, English or Scandinavian interior using furniture from certain manufacturers. Country style provides slightly naive desk cabinets with natural or artificial abrasions on the body. Small secretaries of laconic forms made of wood and rough finishing are suitable for eco-style.

Proper use of the secretary's features, rational storage of books, papers, writing instruments and other things necessary for work, as well as the interesting appearance of this piece of furniture will certainly be appreciated by any home owner. By the way, the secrets of some ancient secretaries have not yet been solved, maybe your furniture will become interesting to your descendants later?

For shoes, it is worth providing special inclined pull-out shelves. Their height will depend on the purpose. For summer shoes, the height should be about 30 cm, for winter shoes - 40-45 cm;
  • The middle compartment is for things that are used most often. This area includes pantographs, rods, and pull-out shelves on which small toiletries can be placed. The height of the middle zone depends on the length of the items. The average dimensions are in the range of 1.4-1.7 m. To place jackets and shirts, it is enough to provide a compartment 1 m high. For knitted items, it is worth providing boxes and baskets that can be placed on shelves;

L-shaped walk-in closets

The L-shaped layout has its own specifics. When installing dressing rooms according to this scheme, you can refuse to install any partitions, since the racks are actually part of the room in which they will be located. Considering that the cost of constructing partitions often accounts for 50% of the total cost, by giving preference to this type, you can significantly reduce your costs.

This layout is worth paying attention to if required. Walk-in closet 2 sq. m. Photos of finished projects indicate that open shelving is most often chosen in order to rationally manage the available space.

U-shaped

From device to typical apartment Most people refuse a dressing room in the shape of the letter “P”, believing that such a scheme can only be implemented in large areas. However, with the right approach, developing a drawing and diagram, you can competently manage even relatively small space, forming an area for storing things in the corner of one of the rooms.

Perhaps this solution will add extravagance the interior being created, but it will fully meet the requirements of ergonomics. The set itself is made monolithic. To ensure sufficient functionality, it is worth providing closed drawers, hangers, and special sections.

If you decide to allocate a whole room, and not just part of it, to arrange a dressing room, you should pay attention to a rectangular room. The elongated shape will simplify the process of developing a diagram and drawing, as well as subsequent installation of the structure with your own hands.

Wardrobes in the bedroom

When starting to develop drawings and deciding on the location of the dressing room, attention is most often paid to. This place for storing clothes can easily be called the most successful. That's why the photo ready-made solutions most often demonstrates the dressing room in the bedroom.

How rational such a solution is for a particular room can be determined at the stage of developing drawings after calculating the area of the sleeping area. If the dimensions of the room allow you to install a bed of the desired size, and there is still space left, you can safely take on the task. installation work with your own hands.

Which scheme for organizing the internal space will be preferred is decided at the stage of drawing development. The best option It is considered U-shaped, allowing you to fill the shelves as much as possible and provide enough space for movement. However, L-shaped or parallel is often found.

The design of the corner dressing room in the bedroom deserves special attention. Photos of ready-made solutions show that to implement it, it is enough to install a partition at the head of the bed and separate small angle. However, this solution is only suitable for rooms with a large area.

Construction of a dressing room from a storage room in a Khrushchev building

If you compare a pantry and a dressing room, the main difference will be in the system for organizing things. The latter provides mezzanines, shelves, hangers, drawers and other components designed for convenient storage of things for various purposes. Thanks to a well-thought-out layout, all things are accessible and visible. The accommodation option depends on the budget and area of the room.

To make a small closet from a closet convenient and functional, you should first familiarize yourself with possible planning solutions that are relevant for a small room. Using the latest technologies, it is easy to become the owner of an optimal storage system that can harmoniously fit into the available space. Based on photos of ready-made solutions, it will be possible to initially develop a diagram of the future dressing room, and then detailed drawing. After this, it will be much easier to assemble and install the structure with your own hands.

We invite you to familiarize yourself with the photo of the dressing room with your own hands from the pantry, which have already been implemented:

Proper dressing room lighting

Must be good. However, direct sunlight may cause the fabric to discolor. It is worth abandoning natural sources in favor of artificial ones. Don't limit yourself to just one ceiling lamp. Her luminous flux won't be enough.

The best solution is to install a suspended ceiling or install a large number of small lamps located around the perimeter installed structure. In the photos of dressing rooms you can see fluorescent lamps mounted on the partitions, allowing for the proper level of illumination.

Requirements for dressing room ventilation

To prevent the appearance of a musty smell, good air exchange is organized in places where things are stored. For this purpose, not only natural, but also forced ventilation is provided. The first ensures air movement due to physical processes, which assume that cold air arriving from below rises upward. To implement this, an inlet opening should be provided in the lower part, and an exhaust opening in the upper part. If ventilation duct passes close to installed system, it is worthwhile to provide a branch to the exhaust hole.

The natural disadvantage is the low air exchange rate. Installation, which involves installing fans in the supply or exhaust openings, helps to correct the situation. However, most often preference is given forced exhaust with a natural supply of fresh air.

To ensure that enough fresh air enters the room, the size of the supply openings is determined based on the speed of movement of air masses and the dimensions of the room. In accordance with regulatory documents A single air exchange must be ensured.

Doors for dressing room

When starting installation yourself, you should decide on the type of doors to be installed. Their dimensions can be calculated from the drawing. The choice can be made in favor of coupe, hinged, or hinged types. Sometimes you can do without them. Photos of dressing rooms will tell you how to implement this option.

When choosing doors for a dressing room, you should focus on the overall stylistic design of the room. The structure being installed must fit harmoniously into the space. The width of the sashes and their design are selected individually.

Storage systems in the dressing room

The storage system should be chosen more carefully. Not only the arrangement of things during storage, but also the ease of use of the structure depends on this. Photos, drawings and do-it-yourself wardrobe diagrams indicate that there are a large number of ready-made storage systems that are worth getting acquainted with when starting to develop documentation.

Clothing storage systems

For organized storage of clothes, you can use not only drawers or shelves, but also special systems. The choice can be made in favor of skirts or trousers: special guides with transverse slats on which you can store the named wardrobe element.

An alternative to a skirt can be a hanger with several crossbars located one above the other. It may not be very convenient to use, but it costs much less.

For men who prefer business style, a design designed for storing ties would be interesting.

In France, in the 18th century, they even began to produce a new type of furniture - secretaries. The name itself suggests that these interior items were intended to keep the owner’s secrets. As a rule, these were miniature bureaus with many visible and hidden shelves and drawers and a folding tabletop used as a desk.

The boxes were often equipped with secret locks and secret locking mechanisms. Among antique dealers and collectors of antiques, there are many legends about untold riches accidentally discovered after pressing some inconspicuous stud inside an antique secretary. Or how an antique secretary, having changed many owners, fell into the hands of an experienced specialist who was able to figure out the location of the hiding place, searched for a long time for a way to open it, and, of course, eventually discovered a secret drawer full of ancient treasures.

But even today, the romance of secrets and mysteries has not gone away - people still like to create unexpected and original places to store valuables. And for a number of reasons, the easiest way to do this is in furniture and other interior items. Some hiding places cannot be created without the help of a good furniture maker; in some cases, furniture is already sold with secret niches for storage, but there are also ways to reliably hide something inside the most ordinary furniture.

Therefore, there is a very high probability of quickly discovering such a cache, and it is better to use this original storage method for something not very valuable.

It is also quite common to store valuables in a piano. By its design, this musical instrument has a lot of free space inside, which can be perfectly used to place anything: from household supplies to important documents.

The same applies to storage under the bed - you won’t get a full-fledged hiding place from this place, but it is very convenient to remove items that are not needed at the moment.

Among the ready-made furniture intended for secret storage of valuables, special shelves and tabletops should be noted. From their appearance it is impossible to guess that there is a hiding place inside.

Wall mirrors and specially designed paintings can also make excellent hiding places that are almost impossible to discover.

The decision on a convenient, competent arrangement of things is the main part of putting things in order in an apartment or house. It’s always pleasant to be in a clean, uncluttered room where you can breathe easily and there is nothing unnecessary lying around.

Beautiful dressing room.

The table is not littered with newspapers and books, things do not fall out of the cabinets on your head. The shelves are not cluttered with unnecessary little things. For constant order in the house and ease of cleaning, follow the basic storage rules:

  • Go through the entire wardrobe of all family members, throw away things that you have not used for a long time. Excessive clutter creates a mess, even in a large room.

If you get something you haven’t worn for a year or more, get rid of it immediately, you definitely won’t wear it!

  • When you deal with the extra ones, unnecessary things, determine their purpose and distribute them among the rooms.
  • Now determine how often you use the item, its place in the closet or wardrobe will depend on this.

Is there a need for a dressing room?

Dressing room in the bedroom.

Built-in wardrobes have gained popularity. And if you think about it, this is a justified idea. Things are distributed in places, everything is at hand, conveniently folded. With this organization, clothes last longer and serve longer, do not wrinkle, all items are visible in their drawers and compartments. Large furniture does not take up valuable square meters, the room is freer and more spacious. True, for a rational layout of the dressing room, you will need to competently fill it with the necessary functional equipment and modules for convenience. In addition to placing clothes, there is room for sports equipment and household items.

Choosing a location for a dressing room

We determine the location for the future locker room: in newly built houses and apartments such a location is provided in advance; all that remains is to choose the configuration and filling of the room.

Convenient dressing room arrangement.

But what to do if such a room is not provided, then what to do, how to equip a dressing room? Then you need to use the services of a master, a furniture designer, who will help you choose the “right” filling for a small room and use every piece of space to your advantage.

Make sure there are outlets in the dressing room!

Partition the space and install a sliding door, provide filling and lighting; this option will work if you can allocate at least 1 meter of depth for the dressing room.

The location of the dressing room in the corner of the room is another layout option; the door is located diagonally and the room does not visually look smaller.

Options for locating a dressing room under the stairs and in the attic can be successful and interesting.

Large dressing room, convenient location.

Choosing a project for a dressing room

Based on the area and shape of the room, we plan the future “smart” closet. The layout can be L-shaped, U-shaped, linear, trapezoidal and pentagonal. The area of the resulting space is from 2 square meters. and more. If this is a dedicated room, its dimensions are 20-30 square meters.

Large dressing room.

Dressing room along the wall

The system is simple to construct - linear, located along the wall. A utility room is installed using a plasterboard partition.

Arrangement of a linear type dressing room.

The main requirement is that it should not be too long to avoid a lengthy search for the right thing. Although if you design such a utility room taking into account all the nuances, you can get convenient shelves for sports equipment, household items (vacuum cleaner, buckets, cans, travel suitcases, etc.)

The upper shelves contain those items that are not required daily. It doesn't hurt to think about having a ladder for the upper shelves.

Corner wardrobe device

In an apartment with a small area, a corner layout will be a convenient layout. The area is 3-4 square meters, which will solve the issue of rational storage of things.

The corner dressing room in the room can be triangular - two walls are used and a partition and a door are used diagonally.

Corner dressing room project.

The trapezoidal shape is located along the wall, and the missing ones are completed from plasterboard; we install a door in one of the walls.

Trapezoidal dressing room in the bedroom.

When arranging a dressing room, think over the lighting scenario; it is convenient when the lamps rotate and it is possible to direct the lighting to the shelves.

The L-shaped cabinet filling is located along two walls and meets in the corner. The most common design. The mirror is placed on back side doors, facing the dressing room.

L-shaped dressing room layout.

Five-walled - the most spacious layout. Due to the extended walls towards the room, the area inside is significantly expanded. Modules, shelves, drawers are placed along four walls, and a mirror is usually attached to the door, since a full-fledged mirror for the fitting room will not fit there. This layout is recommended for medium and large bedrooms.

In some apartments old building, and in new buildings there are storage rooms. Does your apartment have a storage room? Consider yourself lucky if you have! Read the recommendations on how to organize a dressing room from a closet.

Do-it-yourself dressing room from the pantry - it’s not difficult to get a convenient dressing room for storing things. Storerooms are usually filled with unnecessary things and are used irrationally.

How to arrange everything correctly and rationally fill the furniture for the dressing room. We will fill the existing racks with things taking into account the frequency of their use. Below we have shelves for shoes. Provide hangers or a row of hooks on top for bags, hats, and belts. In case of missing shelves, we measure the dimensions and can order their production in a specialized store. There you can also purchase the missing modules, drawers, rods, and fittings.

Dressing room under the stairs

A staircase is an uncommon occurrence in an apartment, but in a private house, if there is an attic or second floor, it is doable.

It’s not difficult to use this space for a wardrobe; just think about which design option suits you. There is an open storage system.

Block-retractable and system with hinged doors or sliding doors. In the area itself high altitude Under the stairs we install rods for winter clothes and long ones, which hang and so, in descending height, we think about filling the closet, down to the lowest for shoe racks and all sorts of small things.

Dressing room behind the partition

You can equip a wardrobe behind a partition yourself, without involving specialists. The partition can be improvised or stationary.

Improvised partition for a dressing room.

Improvised is the use of thick curtains to divide a room. The curtain is attached to ceiling cornice or on a barbell. The screen is suitable for a bedroom; behind it you can not only arrange a dressing room, but also store bedding, and in good lighting, create a boudoir with a mirror. But a model with a curtain will hardly look appropriate in the living room.

The second option is zoning with a plasterboard wall, this model is a little more complicated and more expensive, but there are no problems with the location, it can be installed in any room. No permitting documentation for such a construction is not required. This structure can be dismantled at any time.

Wardrobe in a separate room

The advantage of an individual room designed for a wardrobe is undeniable. Free layout, arrangement of an area for each family member, equipping this room with the necessary accessories, comfortable furniture, a folding chair and a large mirror for the fitting area. Gives you the opportunity to apply any content, depending only on your wishes.

Systems for distributing items in a dressing room

The compactness of placement of clothes, shoes, and bedding largely depends on the design and layout of the room intended for the wardrobe. For convenient organization and functionality, you will need to be filled with systems for convenient storage of things; they have a lot of model options, each of them has positive and negative sides.

Convenient dressing room in the bedroom.

Main system devices:

What does the modular system and assembly principle look like? The system is developed according to your order and dimensions. Mounted along a wall or several walls. It consists of segments that have walls on the sides, top and bottom. All these sections are pulled together. The advantages of this concept are that it is inexpensive, easy to install from chipboard, and looks beautiful.

The mesh system is one of the most stable and can withstand heavy loads. A metal rail is mounted to one of the walls, supporting parts are attached to it, into which brackets are placed for arranging the contents in the form of racks, shoe racks, trouser racks, etc.

The frame system is simple to install; moving segments is easy; when using this configuration, a natural circulation air. The frame consists of metal pillars fastened between the floor and the ceiling or between two walls; the filling is attached to the main frame at the required height.

Racks that consist of a main panel rigidly attached to one of the walls, and on it are located accessories for organizing the storage of clothes and shoes, are called panel racks. This system has no partitions or side restraints. Installation allows you to hide uneven walls and other flaws, but is not a cheap pleasure and requires the use of original components for wardrobe modules; they are sold together with a decorative wall.

Description of designs

There are two types of structures - the classic one made of chipboard and the metal-frame one, consisting of modules. At the base there are metal slats to which they are attached required sections. Sections are produced in specific sizes, so they complicate planning, for example in an individual small or with non-standard sizes indoors, but you can’t do without advantages here either. The modular system has high strength and stability, durability and reliability.

Arranging wardrobes with a modular system.

The classic design is widely applicable, inexpensive in execution, allows you to arrange it according to the size of your utility room, it is possible to use third-party accessories for filling: rods, trousers, laundry baskets, transformable ironing boards, etc.

Self-installation

Making a dressing room with your own hands is a completely doable task. We have chosen a location, measure all the exact dimensions, and choose a layout. Before carrying out work, it is advisable to make a drawing diagram on which to draw the structure.

Do-it-yourself wardrobe drawing diagram.

With the help of such a drawing it will be easier to calculate the amount of required material and components. The next step is the purchase and preparation of building materials. Choose a door design: coupe, hinged or accordion door.

Profile frame for building a dressing room.

You will need a metal profile or wooden beam for the frame. For walls and cladding OSB plywood or plasterboard. It’s worth mentioning right away that both materials are easy to install, but in terms of environmental friendliness it’s worth thinking about. If the dressing room is supposed to be in the bedroom, it is better to choose plasterboard; this material breathes, absorbs excess moisture, and things will not have an unpleasant odor.

We cover the walls of the dressing room with plasterboard.

Let's start installation; for shelves it is better to use a special perforated profile, into the holes of which ready-made shelves and other necessary structures are inserted; it looks like shelves in stores. The profile itself (the main guides are attached to the wall. This type of design will allow you to easily vary the height of shelves and racks.

Another system for making a dressing room - use special pipes, connectors and various fasteners, all of this is now available for sale, this design is installed quite quickly and does not require a high level of skill.

Shelves in the dressing room are made of plasterboard sheets.

Shelves for the dressing room are made of sheets of thick plywood or chipboard; shelves made of chipboard will require a solid frame.

The need for rational placement of things in conditions small premises does not lose relevance from year to year. Furniture designers are working tirelessly to create new ergonomic storage systems. As a result of their efforts, bulky cabinets are replaced by a comfortable, meticulously thought-out and spacious dressing room - you can equip it with your own hands in the pantry, under the stairs, in the hallway or bedroom. Having decided on the layout and completed basic drawings and calculations, you can begin to prepare suitable materials. In addition, you will need to think through many nuances: from wall decoration to lighting. Ready-made design projects will help you arrange the room competently, making the most of the usable space.

Features of arrangement in different rooms

The minimum room area for a wardrobe system is 2 m². This space is enough for a comfortable arrangement of hangers, shelves, and drawers. Optimal level humidity is 30–60% in summer and 30–45% in cold weather. The room is equipped with forced ventilation to prevent the appearance of mustiness, mold, and unpleasant odors.

Unfortunately, there is not always space in an apartment or house for a separate wardrobe system. In such cases, it is necessary to equip it in the most suitable premises:

  1. Bedroom. Usually mobile hangers, open shelves, glass partitions are used, doors are replaced with curtains or screens. Advantages: convenience, all things are at arm's length. Disadvantages: the design can cause difficulties during installation, the impossibility of arrangement in small rooms.
  2. Pantry. Suitable for creating a separate full-fledged dressing room. Manufacturing a storage system allows you to use all the usable space, install shelves, racks, racks, mirrors. Advantages: ability to accommodate a large number of things, ease of creation with your own hands. Cons: small passage, inconvenience when trying on clothes.
  3. Hallway. A good solution would be to install a built-in structure; open, closed, and combined systems are acceptable. Advantages: the dressing room replaces bulky wardrobes and chests of drawers, the ability to store outerwear and other things. Disadvantages: suitable only for spacious rooms, complexity of construction.
  4. Attic. The layout depends on the shape of the room. If the ceiling is at an angle, the racks are mounted along the highest or lowest wall. Advantages: large area, convenient storage and access to things, ease of arrangement. Disadvantages: you always have to go to the top floor to change clothes.

In private homes, space under the stairs is often allocated for a wardrobe system. Among the advantages of such a solution are savings on the purchase of furniture and the ability to use useful space. Disadvantages include limited space and difficulties with independent production.

Selecting a layout

The design of the wardrobe system must fully comply with the parameters of the room. The location of the door, windows, as well as the geometry of the room must be taken into account. Among the most common varieties:

  1. Linear dressing room. The simplest project is when the furniture is lined up along a blank wall or around a doorway. The entrance can be created using an accordion door, which does not require much space to open. For comfortable use, the depth of the dressing room should be at least 1.5 m. Advantages: ease of installation, spaciousness. Disadvantages: not very comfortable arrangement of things.
  2. Parallel dressing room. Storage systems are located opposite each other, so a suitable space should have a width of 1.6 m or more. This option is relevant for elongated rooms in which the window is opposite the door. The racks should be placed at a distance of 80 cm. Advantages: a large number of storage spaces. Disadvantages: not suitable for walk-through rooms.
  3. U-shaped. Convenient for decorating spacious dressing rooms. The layout is ideal for long rooms. Advantages: excellent capacity, ability to use any storage systems. Disadvantages: not suitable for small spaces.
  4. Corner. Allows rational use of rooms with limited space: children's rooms, bedrooms, attics, hallways. Thanks to the right angle arrangement, it is possible to place twice as many things on the shelves compared to the linear option. Advantages: spaciousness, filling areas that are often empty. Disadvantages: due to the small size, changing clothes will be inconvenient.

To make your dressing room comfortable and ergonomic with your own hands, you need to correctly arrange storage systems. A suitable layout is selected based on the individual parameters of the room, its geometry and other features. As a standard, the minimum passage width should be from 80 to 100 cm.

How smaller area dressing room, the more open compartments and hangers it should have.

Materials

The furnishings for the dressing room can be purchased ready-made. You must first measure the room so that the set fits perfectly into the available space. The following factory designs are popular:

  1. Modular wardrobe systems. Pros: ease of use, affordable cost, attractive design that looks especially cozy in home interiors. Cons: you cannot change the location and height of the shelves.
  2. Metal and mesh systems. Pros: the racks allow air to pass freely, the shelves can be rearranged, the materials are not susceptible to moisture. Cons: high cost, there are no limiters between the compartments, which can lead to things falling out.

Entrance area

The minimum width of the entrance opening should be 80 cm. Sliding doors, sliding systems or curtains are used to decorate the entrance to the dressing room. When choosing, you must take into account the features of each option:

  1. Sliding doors. The products move along the wall, so they do not require additional space and help save space. Advantages: no thresholds, which looks aesthetically pleasing, safe to use, comfortable. Disadvantages: low heat and sound insulation, high maintenance requirements, difficult installation.
  2. Sliding systems. Depending on the mechanisms used, there are folding, sliding, louvered, and techno-structures. Advantages: space saving, effective addition to the interior, ease of use, simple installation. Disadvantages: noise when moving the sashes, lack of tightness, high maintenance requirements, short service life.
  3. Curtains. In some cases, the use of fabric curtains is the most practical and convenient. Advantages: lightweight material, does not take up much space, quick installation, interior decoration. Disadvantages: ability to allow dust to pass through, the need for frequent washing and ironing.

A small dressing room will become visually larger when using mirrored doors. This technique will help you evaluate the appearance after trying on things if there is no space in the room for other reflective surfaces. Fabric options that match the color of the wall decoration perfectly camouflage niches.

Lighting

The question of how to properly organize lighting in a dressing room remains relevant. Experts recommend choosing lamps with a spectrum closest to natural sunlight. Optimal power is 10–20 W.

Halogen, fluorescent, and LED lamps are suitable for dressing rooms. Overhead light is provided by compact spotlights. Long chandeliers with hanging elements are not suitable for dressing rooms, as they will get in the way when trying on things. Mirrors, drawers and shelves, which are used most often, need additional lighting.

Stages of work

Decorating a dressing room with your own hands begins with creating a project and preparing for the work process. The following tools and consumables will be required:

  • Screwdriver Set;
  • drill;
  • screws, dowels;
  • hammer;
  • building level;
  • roulette;
  • Wall panels;
  • guides and rack profiles;
  • plasterboard (moisture-resistant) with a thickness of 12 to 15 mm;
  • mineral wool to create a frame;
  • putty;
  • mounting grid;
  • wallpaper or paint compositions;
  • wires for electrical wiring;
  • lamps;
  • switches, sockets.

The main elements for equipping the dressing rooms are being prepared: shelving, mirrors, drawers, rods. Suitable fittings are selected for sashes and storage systems. The work process consists of finishing the room and installing structures.

Tools

Preparing the premises

In an open dressing room, it is necessary to treat the walls against fungus. To do this, use a construction antiseptic or folk remedies: solutions of bleach, soda, vinegar. The best finishing option would be washable wallpaper. At this stage, it is necessary to carry out electrical wiring and arrange lighting equipment.

TO floor covering The dressing room has special requirements: aesthetics, resistance to deformation, durability, hygiene. They correspond to laminate, linoleum, wooden plank. Cold tiles and porcelain stoneware are not suitable, as well as expensive parquet, the use of which is inappropriate in this case.

The entrance to the dressing room can be open or closed. Modern options are sliding structures, portable curtains and partitions that harmonize with the overall design of the room. For classic interior a traditional wooden door is optimal; for a minimalist - a lightweight, almost invisible model. Arches look original, but when using them, things must be kept in perfect order.

The question of how to make a dressing room in a limited space is relevant for owners of city apartments. The optimal solution would be open systems storage, as well as division into zones or tiers:
