Benefits of Ampel Plants

Almost all ampels are annual. But they can be stored until the next warm season by removing them indoors for the period of frosty winter. Moreover, they valued among flower growers for their unpretentiousness.

The ampel can be used to decorate any terrace or window sill. They will not leave indifferent any gardener.

Ampel plants are often decorated not only in private gardens, but also in summer cafes, parks, balconies of high-rise buildings. The name "ampelous" is translated from German as a suspended vase of flowers. Therefore, ampels are most often called plants blooming in suspended pots.

But this is just one of the varieties of ampels. In more detail about the classification of these plants, the method of growing them, the advantages over ordinary garden flowers - in this article.

Features of ampelous plants and their classification

Depending on the growth method, the ampels are divided into several subspecies:

  • creeping;
  • climbing;
  • curly;
  • multi-socket.

Some of them look like vines growing upward and having aerial roots. Others have a variety of tendrils that help plants cling to a net, arch, or fence. Another group is hanging ampelous plants for the garden. They can be seen most often: gazebos, terraces and balconies are decorated with such pots.

Creeping ampels decorate horizontal surfaces. This is the so-called "rug". This variety can have inflorescences or consist of only leaves. Garden paths are decorated with creeping ampelous plants, they zone the space in the courtyard, and are used to complement the flower arrangement.

Curly ampels decorate fences, metal and wooden arches. In order to climb up, these flowers need guides - stretched strings and ropes. With the help of climbing plants, they create "living" hedges, shade the sides of the gazebo or terrace, and decorate the roofs.

Important! The main distinguishing feature of ampels is considered to be a flexible stem, thanks to which a flower can hang from a flowerpot or take on a bizarre shape of a braided object.

How to compose a composition of ampelous plants

To decorate or complement the garden with flowers, you need great taste. Ampels can be combined not only in color, size or type, these plants complement interior and exterior items, combine them with ordinary garden trees and bushes, plant not only in pots, but also on the roof or on an old stump, for example.

A few simple rules will help you to correctly compose a flower arrangement:

  1. Plants without flowers can be supplemented with any ampels with inflorescences.

  2. If the composition is symmetrical, its creation begins from the center of the pot or flowerpot, planting the smallest flowers there. On the sides, the container is decorated with varieties of falling ampels, combining their color and shape.

  3. For a cascade composition, it is necessary to use several types of ampels with different stem heights. The tallest flowers are planted in the far row, as they approach the viewer, the height of the bushes should decrease so that the plants do not block each other.

  4. If there is an old well, an unnecessary cart, a chest of drawers or a bicycle on the site, they can be effectively beaten with the help of ampelous plants. Several pots with flowers planted in them are attached to these objects and form the growth of stems.

  5. A wooden or wrought iron gazebo is simply created to be decorated with flowers. Here, ampels are hung at the entrance and near the windows, pots of flowers are placed on window sills and tables, and the corners are decorated with vases with weaving plants (an excellent example of gazebo decor is shown in the photo below).

  6. An artificial pond or a waterfall near the house will also not do without ampel flowers. Plants will add color to the pond, and water, in turn, will provide coolness to the flowers.

  7. For climbing plants, arches are made of metal, wood or plastic. Such arches decorated with vines decorate the entrance to the courtyard or the path leading to the gazebo.

  8. Green tunnels made of flowers look especially impressive; a good example of such an ensemble is shown in the photo.

  9. You can combine several types of one plant with each other, for example, ordinary and ampelous carnations.

  10. The same plants with flowers of different shades look very impressive and bright. Most often, petunia bushes are combined in this way.

  11. Another win-win option is to decorate the plot with pots with different flowers in the same color scheme. You can choose only plants with red inflorescences, or combine all shades of yellow in a flowerpot.

Advice! When composing a composition, it is necessary to think not only about the beauty of the “bouquet”, but also about its “comfort”. The same soil, moisture and light levels should be suitable for all plants.

How to grow ampelous plants

The easiest option is to purchase flowerpots and pots with already blooming ampels in a specialized store. In this case, it remains only to arrange the flowers on the site, decorating them in a single composition.

It is much more difficult to grow flowers from seeds. Indeed, for the correct combination of ampels, you need to know exactly what will grow from these seeds.

First, the seeds are sown in separate boxes to grow seedlings from them. When the plants get stronger, they are transplanted to a permanent place. There are a number of rules to follow here:

  • each amelian flower needs its own soil: some plants like loams, others need peat, for others, the nutritional value of the soil is more important. Information on the required soil composition can be found on the seed package. Or prepare a universal substrate for ampels based on purchased soil and peat.
  • Flowers in pots need to be watered more often than plants in flower beds. The following rule applies here - the smaller the flowerpot, the more often and more abundantly the ampels will have to be watered. Many ampelous flowers need watering twice a day.
  • So that weed seeds do not get into the pots, and the earth does not dry out by the sun and wind, the soil in the flowerpots is mulched after planting seedlings in them.
  • Hanging planters, baskets and pots should be filled with light substrates. In some cases, it is allowed to use gel balls, floral sponges and other devices to retain moisture. Coconut fiber is considered the most optimal substrate option.
  • The soil for ampelous plants must be drained. At the bottom of pots and flowerpots, you need to lay fragments of earthenware or small pebbles. Hanging planters must be equipped with a drainage hole.
  • If you need to decorate the balcony or windows of the upper floors with hanging flowerpots, you need to choose undersized ampelous plants - long stems will easily break with a strong wind that blows at a height.
  • It is important to keep free space between the ampels, they should not be cramped. You can plant no more than 5 plants in one medium-sized flowerpot (about 30 cm in diameter).

Flowers are a delightful creation of nature that can decorate any home and site. It is clear that not only the owners of their own garden or a house with a veranda, but also residents of apartments want to admire their beauty. Therefore, on the balconies and window sills of flower growers, you can increasingly see flowerpots and hanging pots with ampel flowers. When choosing ampelous flowers for pots, many people are guided only by photos and beautiful names, without thinking that certain types of care are required for different types of plants. As a result, it is impossible to grow a healthy flower. From this article you will learn what flowers are called ampelous, what are their distinctive features and how to create a blooming corner at home.

Ampel plants with flexible and long stems are not able to stay upright. Because of this feature, such flowers in nature most often spread along the ground, and at home they need a support or suspension. How did these plants conquer the hearts of flower growers?

  • One of the main advantages of ampelous flowers is their ability to grow and bloom quickly throughout the warm season;
  • Such flowers can be grown almost everywhere: in the garden, on an open veranda, on a glassed-in balcony and even in a room on a windowsill;
  • Hanging pots do not take up much space and look beautiful from any angle. Such a flower garden will be an excellent interior decoration;
  • Some species can bloom even in the cold season, if you create greenhouse conditions for them. A glazed balcony or living room is suitable for this;
  • Ampel plants often do not require constant careful maintenance. It is enough for them to create comfortable temperature conditions, do not forget about watering and seasonal feeding.

In addition, these flowers have a very varied color, thanks to which any area with them will sparkle with new colors.

Plants up to half a meter in height are considered stunted, they are used to create flower beds, borders, rock gardens. They…

TOP - 5 MOST UNUFFICIENT ROOM FLOWERS

Such plants are ready to forgive their owners for their busyness, constant lack of time, continuing to grow to their joy. The main thing is to initially create the required conditions for such flowers: if they are shade-tolerant, they can be placed in rooms with windows facing north, while light-loving ones - in sunny rooms, still provide with periodic watering.

- a very interesting indoor tree flower, growing up to 60 cm tall, belongs to the genus of succulents, has a fleshy trunk in which moisture accumulates in reserve, so frequent watering is not needed.

When adenium blooms, it is beautiful - the branches of the plant are covered with flowers that resemble something between lilies and roses of white, light pink or mixed colors. It is placed on light-colored windows, protecting it from direct sunlight; it is easier to tolerate the lack of watering in the room than when it is outside.

Blooming kalanchoe

- another one of the beautifully blooming succulents, ready to grow in "Spartan" conditions, not leaving it to the owners. Calmly tolerates low room humidity, they are not demanding on the composition of the soil, short-term drying is easier for them than abundant watering.

It is advisable, of course, to adhere to the frequency of watering, 1 or 2 times a month to feed the Kalanchoe with complex fertilizers in order to provide it with the possibility of abundant flowering.

It is important! Kalanchoe will suffer from an overabundance of fertilizer, especially in the cold months of the year; with fertilizing watering, it is worth following the principle: it is better to under-supply than to transfer.

Spathiphyllum

- although the flower has the additional name "female happiness", it courageously endures the lack of humidity in the premises, is ready to put up with diffused lighting, it can do without watering for up to a week or more.

When its leaves begin to dry out, spathiphyllum is given a slightly cool douche in the shower room, it quickly departs, continues to grow. Responsive to watering 2-3 times a week, actively bushes, blooms with beautiful white flowers, similar to calla lilies on high thin legs.

Decembrist

- a fast-growing flower, not capricious at slightly inappropriate temperatures. Florists love this unassuming, beautifully flowering plant, and breeders are actively working for them, annually breeding all new hybrids of the Decembrist, blooming in orange, coral, lilac shades, so that the plant blooms two or three times a year, it is enough to provide it with a room with diffused light and watering as the top layer of the soil dries out.

- undemanding, easily reproduces, and also blooms all year round in a variety of shades - it is one of the most popular indoor flowers. For a plant for long-term flowering, bright enough light is only a few hours a day, I am ready to accept if it is identified in the far corner. If there is a lack of moisture in the flowerpot, it will not wither, it will drop only the lower leaves, reducing the area of evaporation. With sufficient watering, the leaves return their elasticity, it is desirable that the soil is constantly moist.

CURLING ROOM VINES

With the help of climbing indoor plants used in vertical gardening, thanks to their flexible long stems, it is possible to create unique interior compositions and decorate your home with them. Lianas do not take up much space, since their densely leafy stems can be given any direction, they are tied to a support, then giving the opportunity to fall, creating the atmosphere of a tropical forest.

Passionflower

- a liana with interesting, inimitably beautiful complex flowers, a real exotic in indoor plant growing. It is impossible to describe it in words, the flowers of the plant are so unusual.

Surprisingly, this multi-meter liana easily takes root, grows quickly, is relatively unpretentious, loves sunlight, and requires annual pruning. Blooming flowers live only one day, but new ones bloom to replace them. If the right conditions are created for passionflower, it will throw out enough buds to admire its flowers.

It is important! The stems of passionflower definitely need supports, with their help, the stems are directed in the right direction: the stems quickly become stiff, it is important not to miss this period.

- is also a very beautiful liana, blooms with lilac or white flowers, reminiscent of bells. The plant looks very decorative, quickly grows up to 5 meters, but in the first year it does not bloom intensively, gaining strength for the next season.

Stefanotis

- an overseas miracle, a curly flower with dark glossy leaves and white, like porcelain flowers in the shape of stars. If Stephanotis is properly looked after, its liana grows up to 6 m, dense leafy lashes can be placed vertically using a wall grill, decorating windows, walls, from several flowers you can arrange a kind of curtain. In the heat, he likes to water and irrigate, in the winter months he prefers to keep it cool.

Thomson's Clerodendrum

- a powerful, fast-growing and original blooming liana, the flower also has beautiful large emerald leaves, so it deserves to become an adornment of any, even the most sophisticated home interior.

The scourges of the clerodendrum grow constantly, they have to be pinched from time to time in order to somehow restrict their growth (if the dimensions of the room require it). For even greater decorativeness, the flower can be built supports in the form of a pyramid or arch, ball, and shoots can be directed along them, fixing them.

Clerodendrum needs diffused lighting, watering is very frequent, up to several times a day to compensate for the moisture that the foliage evaporates.

THE MOST RESISTANT AND UNRELIABLE AMPELE ROOM PLANTS

The group of ampelous ones is united by the presence of a flexible long stem that creeps along the surface or wraps around the support. There are three types of ampel:

  • succulents;
  • blooming;
  • decorative deciduous.

Most of them were brought from hot countries with an arid or humid climate, you need to choose the right place for their permanent location so that adaptation to local indoor conditions is less painful for them. By creating conditions close to natural, the grower will have a chance to have a beautifully growing and developing plant in his house.

It is important! Since the beginning of budding, ampelous flowers, except for watering, no more care procedures are carried out.

For the symmetrical development of the plant, it is advisable to periodically turn in different directions to the light, the more often this is done, the more harmonious the appearance of the plant will be.

Hoya carnosa

(wax ivy) - a sample of maturity, does not disappear even in northern rooms, due to the ability to accumulate a sufficient supply of moisture in multiple leaves, it calmly does without watering for a couple of months. Transplants into new flowerpots are needed only when there is very little room for roots in the old pot.

With normal care - light, ordinary watering and with the addition of nutrients - very beautiful, with dense flowing lashes covered with umbrella inflorescences.

Chlorophytum

- one of the simplest and most unassuming to care for, can survive on a closet in the far corner of the room, where sunlight almost does not reach, doing without watering for a long time. Can easily tolerate excess moisture, draft or stuffiness.

Only it is hardly worth starting a flower in order to create extreme conditions for it, even if minimal is better, but care:

  • once every 7-10 days watering with room water;
  • once every 2 weeks of feeding;
  • periodic transplants on time;
  • preferably rare bathing in the shower.

It is important! The fact is that chlorophytum (which is clear from the name) is an excellent absorber of all harmful substances in the air, so that the purification process takes place more intensively, the surface of chlorophytum leaves is better kept clean.

The flowers of the plant are formed at the edges of the long shoots, in shape they resemble small white stars.

Fuchsia ampelous

- elegant, cheerful, as if illuminating the space around itself with stems descending in a whole cascade, on the edges of which there are bright flowers. Fuchsia has a long flowering period; it is ready to give joy and mood for almost six months.

The plant can grow in partial shade, caring for many varieties is simple and does not require time and effort. It will look very elegant in hanging baskets and pots, two-tone fuchsias look especially charming.
