You can glue bamboo wallpaper in cold rooms. How to glue bamboo wallpaper on a wall. How to prepare walls for stickers

Conventional wallpapers are giving way to natural materials. After all, in own apartment I really want to see natural canvases.

Glue on bamboo wallpaper must be applied from the reverse side.

Bamboo wallpaper can help in creating a new interior.

They make the design interesting and unusual. However, before work you need to know how to glue bamboo wallpaper. After all, the strength and reliability of structures depends on this process.

Bamboo wallpaper for interior

Products can be purchased at construction stores or salons for interior solutions. Bamboo wallpaper is a structure fixed to a fabric base. The sizes of the canvases and their appearance may vary. So, to work with a large area, craftsmen purchase elements with a width of 1800-2500 mm. During the finishing process, bamboo wallpaper can be trimmed.

To glue bamboo wallpaper you need liquid nails.

To decorate an apron in the kitchen or other areas, you can purchase bamboo wallpaper about 1000 mm wide. In this case, the canvas will have economical consumption. In stores you can purchase the product based on the required sizes.

A distinctive feature of the structures is the width of the lamellas. These elements emphasize the natural origin of the material. You may find joints or uneven texture on them. But this texture is an advantage of wallpaper. After all, you won’t find two identical paintings in the interior. They all differ in their appearance.

Products may vary in color scheme. Various shades, from light to rich dark tones, allow you to successfully combine canvases in the interior. One of the common colors is wenge. It goes well with indoor furniture, finishing materials and floor coverings. Therefore, designers are increasingly using it in their projects. After all, this color not only complements the style, but also significantly decorates it.

How to glue bamboo wallpaper?

During the work process it is necessary to cut the products. You can do the procedure using a stationery knife or scissors. These tools are useful when you need to divide the fabric along the lamellas. The cutting element must be inserted between the joint strips. This way the cut will be made on the tissue. The procedure is easy and quick.

It is more difficult to cut the material across the slats. In this case, you need to use garden pruners or electric saw. Tools will be needed for the work, since the canvas has high density. And it is impossible to cut it with ordinary scissors. For cutting, it is recommended to fix the wallpaper on flat surface. This can be done using construction tape. Then they do the procedure with outside products.

Over time, bamboo wallpaper fades and loses its original appearance.

On next stage you need to prepare the foundation for work. The walls should not contain old materials, cracks or irregularities. All problem areas processed using putty. The mixture is applied to the surface and spread using a spatula. In order for the base to be strong and reliable, it is also recommended to use a primer. It will protect the surface from the appearance of fungus, mold and condensation.

Thus, for finishing work you will need the following tools and materials:

  • bamboo wallpaper;
  • putty;
  • primer;
  • construction tape;
  • scissors;
  • electric saw;
  • special glue;
  • liquid Nails;
  • putty knife;
  • roulette;
  • rubber roller.

Work should begin only after the bamboo material has been left in the room for a day. This is how the product is adapted. In order to fix the wallpaper on the wall, you need to purchase special glue. It must be designed to work with bamboo wallpaper or heavy materials. You should not save on this product. After all, the durability of the structure depends on its quality.

The glue must be evenly distributed over the surface of the canvas and the desired area on the wall. Then the products are left for some time so that the fixing agent becomes transparent. After this, the material is applied to the wall and applied with a rubber roller. If some areas turn out to be poorly coated, you can finish the job using liquid nails. In any case, before carrying out the procedure, you should carefully study the instructions on the packaging of the product.

If glue stains form on the canvas during work, it is recommended to remove them with a dry cloth or sponge. It is necessary to take into account that the wallpaper is immediately firmly fixed to the wall. Therefore, it is recommended to mark the area where finishing will be carried out. This way the material will be fixed evenly and accurately.

Features of working with bamboo fabric

Products are glued end to end. Typically the seam ready-made structures is prominent. but this only emphasizes the natural structure of the material. Some masters use special profiles to create a harmonious image. They are also made from bamboo trunk. With their help you can make the joint neat. To do this, select a profile similar in color to the main product. Joining structures help to combine wallpaper. They can be positioned vertically or horizontally.

In addition to the described parts, craftsmen use edge profiles. Thanks to them you can make an interesting wallpaper outline. This method is especially relevant when the material is in a visible place or highlights a certain area in the room. Additional items help to decorate the design and make it complete.

For those owners who do not know how to glue bamboo wallpaper and where to use it, there are various design ideas. For example, using structures you can decorate a window opening. Thanks to the designs, the design will turn out to be unusual and original. However, it should be taken into account that general style premises should be combined with natural materials.

The products allow you to increase noise insulation in the room; they are resistant to the settling of dust and other small particles. However, it should be taken into account that excessive moisture must be avoided during operation. When caring for the surface, it is recommended to give preference to dry cleaning. The canvas cannot be stored in basements and rooms with high humidity. For finishing work, it is recommended to choose places where there is no bright sunlight. Otherwise bright colors the material will become faded.

Before gluing bamboo wallpaper, you need to decide on the overall design. This design will be the perfect complement for Japanese style. The combination of bamboo products with fabric wall decoration, wooden parquet, mat and details with symbolic ornaments will be a wonderful decoration of the room. And if you combine wallpaper with special bamboo panels, then the design will be complete and holistic.

Bamboo wallpaper is a popular addition to any renovation. With their help, you can decorate the entire room or place a certain accent in the house. These attributes create a special mood in the room. They make the environment luxurious and unique. After all, natural materials are unique. And using them at home allows you to enjoy naturalness and purity.

The process of gluing bamboo wallpaper is a very complex stage of repair work, which requires some skill. But the correctly selected adhesive for this type of wallpaper plays a very important role in this matter.

Interior made using bamboo wallpaper

When choosing it, you need to carefully study the composition so that the result of the repair does not become peeling canvases. Let us dwell in more detail on effective adhesive compositions, their properties and the rules for applying glue to a canvas made of bamboo.

Is it easy to glue bamboo-based panels?

Achieve positive result with such finishing it is possible provided that all preparatory measures were carried out accurately and correctly. As a rule, preparation involves removing contaminants from the surface and dismantling old material.

After this, it is necessary to repair the unevenness and imperfections on the surface using putty. When all these activities are completed, you can begin to directly glue the canvases.

Bamboo wallpaper looks great in the bedroom

These renovation work very complex and require a lot of patience. If you glue bamboo as a panel, then you need to attach some kind of edging along the upper joint of the panels. At the same time, it is important that it is tightly applied to the surface, otherwise all its defects and flaws will be visible.

Before purchasing bamboo sheets, it is important to consider the height at which you will be gluing. The reason is that such products are sold in rolls. Their dimensions are: 0.9 m; 1.5 m; 2 m and 2.5 m. Cutting wallpaper across is not so easy. This can only be done using a hacksaw or jigsaw.

When the canvas is ready, you can start gluing, but already here you should understand that it will be impossible to do this without glue.

Adhesive composition for bamboo

In terms of weight, bamboo canvases are very heavy. Therefore, simple glue is not suitable for these purposes. Most builders recommend using liquid nails in this case, and if the wall is made of plasterboard, then PVA glue. To achieve greater strength, you need to install decorative nails in two places between the planks. But is it right to do this? And how long can bamboo-based canvases last? Let's try to figure this out.

Liquid Nails

The mounting composition liquid nails can effectively attach bamboo sheets, but it must be taken into account that such a product has a very pungent odor, the duration of which in the living room is very long.

Liquid nails from Henkel

The active substances released when using the composition have a very detrimental effect on health. On construction market You can find water-based liquid nails, but they should only be used for porous fabrics, not for bamboo-based wallpaper.

Tougher than nails

Another option is to use Tougher Than Nails glue. It is characterized by excellent adhesive properties, it does not release toxic components, leaves no traces and is able to withstand heavy loads, which is important in this case

Glue from the manufacturer VGT

Then it is necessary to take into account the fact that it is sold in cartridge packages, and here you cannot do without a construction gun. It is advisable to use the composition only for installing wallpaper on small surface. What then to do when you need to finish a large area? Here you will have to put your strength to the fullest.

PVA

If we consider PVA glue, then it is not entirely suitable for gluing due to weak adhesion. To stick wallpaper to the wall, you need to press on the canvas for a long time. You can also use screws or nails to secure the result. But such extensive work done is not worth so much effort.

The most famous glue in a kilogram container

Effective sticky mixture

You can find “Crazy Velcro” glue on the market. Today this is a very effective composition for gluing bamboo wallpaper on a fabric basis. It is absolutely harmless, has good adhesion, and is easy to use.

But the instructions for use do not contain information that glue can be used for gluing bamboo sheets. Although, according to its characteristics, the glue is intended specifically for them.

In addition, such a composition is very difficult to find today. Many people note that in construction stores it is available in a limited assortment, and not all sell it.

MULTIFIX

The next composition that requires attention is called MULTIFIX glue. It is produced in Italy, and is used for gluing bamboo or cork based panels. The glue also has other uses, such as shoe repair.

Italian glue with strong hold

In general, the composition is in wide demand and this is not surprising, because it can withstand moisture, high temperature conditions, has high strength indicators. The product is sold in cardboard boxes, weighing 24 kg. They can also be sold in tin containers with a volume of 4 kg.

LACRYSIL

A composition from LACRYSIL, whose name is “Adhesive for cork, bamboo and natural coatings,” may have similar properties. When purchasing this product, you do not need to dilute it with water, it is already ready for use. The product is odorless, environmentally friendly, and has high adhesion. It is advisable to use it for gluing bamboo sheets, as well as other heavy types of sheets.

Special glue for natural wallpaper

The glue should be spread onto the wall surface using a spatula, the design of which requires the presence of teeth. In this case, be sure to ensure that the applied layer is thin. The product is sold in 1 kg packages. The cost is relatively inexpensive, so everyone can afford to renovate the walls with bamboo wallpaper.

How to apply glue correctly

But even if you choose the right glue, it is not enough to get high-quality finishing. In this case, it is very important to know how to apply the composition correctly. If you read the instructions for using the product you have chosen, you will understand that the product is not applied over the entire surface of the canvas, but only in strips.

The reason is that in this area there is very thick fabric, but between the stripes it is cellular. Consequently, glue treatment is carried out only on areas of dense matter. When the glue is already on the wallpaper, you need to apply it to the wall and wait a few seconds. Then remove the wallpaper again and apply it again.

Apply glue to bamboo fabric

These measures allow the glue to be thoroughly impregnated and achieve a strong adhesion. Using a soft cloth, gently smooth out the wallpaper. It will be very difficult, and even impossible, for one person to carry out such activities. Such canvases are very heavy, so it is necessary for one person to fasten them from above, and the second to wait and support them below.

Still very important point the thickness of the applied layer remains. For some reason, many people believe that the thicker the layer, the better the adhesion. This statement is a myth. Each adhesive has its own layer thickness. Therefore, be sure to study this information before applying.

It turns out that choosing adhesive for bamboo wallpaper is not so simple. There are many nuances here, subject to which you are guaranteed high-quality wallpapering. The durability of such a finish directly depends on the quality of the wallpaper, glue, and whether the technique for applying the composition was followed correctly.

How to glue bamboo wallpaper? It’s worth thinking about this even before purchasing an expensive but very beautiful finishing material. The fact is that high-quality trellises from this evergreen plant are made by hand. They are not painted, but only the chips are selected according to color. Therefore, it is almost impossible to replace a damaged roll: color shades will not match.

Varieties of bamboo wallpaper.

Where is bamboo wallpaper appropriate?

Reed trellises are a highly environmentally friendly material. In addition to the undoubted benefits of this quality and beauty, they have several more attractive features: crushed stems repel dust, do not fade, and, on the contrary, acquire an increasingly refined shade over the years.

An example of calculating wallpaper for a room.

A room completely covered with bamboo wallpaper will not only look great, but also create a very healthy climate. However natural material made from crushed plants is very expensive, so most often only parts of the walls are decorated with it, creating interior details in an oriental or African style. This could be an arch separating one room from another, a niche above the bed (Fig. 1) or an imitation of a panel on the wall (Fig. 2). Since this natural material is easy to clean with a regular sponge, it can be used to decorate the walls of the kitchen or dining room.

Bamboo wallpaper undergoes only antiseptic treatment. No paints, glue or other chemicals are used to create them. Even the rice paper on which the chips are applied is prepared according to special technology. This naturally applies to products self made. But even mass-produced bamboo wallpaper is more environmentally friendly than, for example, vinyl or non-woven wallpaper. That is why they would be appropriate in a bedroom, nursery or playroom.

How to prepare walls for stickers

Wallpaper made of bamboo is a dense, poorly bending material, quite heavy in weight. That is why, before thinking about how to glue bamboo wallpaper, you need to prepare the surface especially carefully. It is also important to pay attention to the glue: ordinary wallpaper will not hold heavy material on the wall.

Wallpaper marking scheme.

They begin work by preparing the room and carefully inspecting the area that will be covered with wallpaper. What should you pay attention to?

  1. The surface must be perfectly flat.
  2. It cannot contain plaster, paint, or other materials that can peel off. They should be removed, and the base should be treated with a special primer to prevent peeling and the appearance of dust.
  3. It is believed that bamboo wallpaper can be glued to stone, brick, wood and concrete without pre-treating the wall with putty. This method is acceptable, but the primer will increase adhesion, therefore, the trellises will hold more securely.
  4. The corners should be well aligned horizontally and vertically. This is important: bamboo wallpaper bends very poorly, so there is a chance that it will not fit tightly into a corner if it is not perfectly shaped.
  5. If all these conditions are met, then the gluing process itself will not be difficult.

A few words about glue. What glue should I use to glue trellises? To do this, you need a special vinyl composition, or better yet, liquid nails. The fine-grained filler included in their composition allows them to withstand heavy weight and create an elastic adhesive layer.

How to glue bamboo wallpaper: work order

To begin with, the rolls are rolled out in the room where they will be glued and left for several hours. During this time, the material adapts to the climate and becomes more pliable.

Scheme for gluing wallpaper to walls.

During this time, you can prepare tools for cutting wallpaper. They are easy to cut lengthwise with a regular knife, but only metal scissors can handle a cross-section.

You can prepare the glue. Usually the packaging indicates its consumption and method of dilution.

When the trellises straighten, they need to be cut. This can be done by placing the material against the wall and using a pencil to mark desired length and the width of the panels. Correctly gluing bamboo wallpaper means cutting it correctly and accurately fixing it on the wall.

When the cut parts are ready, glue is applied to both the panel and the place on the wall where it will be attached. A wide, soft brush works well for these purposes. Leave it like this for 5-10 minutes (the exact time can be found on the glue package). After this, the trellis is placed in the desired place, aligned according to the pre-applied markings and with a soft spatula on top, excess glue is removed using “street” movements. Drops that appear at the edges are immediately removed. A plumb line will help you monitor the verticality of the trellises. In order for the strips glued to the wall to hold tightly, firmly, but not warp, you should not press them too tightly against the wall.

Those who do the sticking themselves are faced with the question of how to glue bamboo wallpaper: end-to-end or overlapping? Since the material is very dense, this can only be done end-to-end. Yes, the seams between the stripes will be noticeable. They can be decorated wooden slats, strips of metal, etc.

It is important to remember: even corners are glued end to end.

Once the trellis has taken its place, you can move on to the next one.

Three people can make the gluing process continuous. While two people are fixing the wallpaper in place, the third one is applying glue to the next piece. If one or two people work, then it is better to adhere to a different algorithm.

  1. Lubricate the workpiece with glue and leave for impregnation.
  2. Apply glue to the area to be treated.
  3. Apply glue to the second piece.
  4. Paste the first strip on the wall.

It is inconvenient to do such work alone, but it is quite possible.

A few little tricks

Characteristics of dry wallpaper glue.

When thinking about how to properly glue bamboo wallpaper, you need to take into account several points on which the quality of the final result depends.

  1. Panels (and rolls) must not be wrinkled or bent. The chips that make up the decorative layer can “break”, which will ruin the presentation of the wallpaper.
  2. Trellis coated with glue must not be moved along the wall.
  3. Residues or excess glue are recommended to be removed immediately soft cloth. After finishing work, to get rid of dust and possible dirt, the wallpaper should be vacuumed and wiped with a damp sponge.
  4. When cleaning walls from plaster before gluing, when removing dust from pasted trellises, do not use a stiff brush.
  5. When working indoors, you need to close the windows: a draft can create a temperature difference that can cause the strips to warp.

These little tricks will help you get the job done efficiently.

Some designers suggest covering already pasted strips with a layer of varnish and applying a pattern in the form of a patina. It is undoubtedly beautiful. However, it’s worth thinking about: does it make sense to coat an environmentally friendly material with chemical compounds?

If all the subtleties are taken into account when gluing, an oriental or African interior will delight the owners of the apartment for many years. The service life of bamboo wallpaper is many times longer than the service life of all other finishing materials.

Similar materials

Natural Decoration Materials are becoming increasingly popular in interior renovation residential premises, gluing bamboo wallpaper has long ceased to be exotic repair procedure. Wallpaper made from natural bamboo strips allows you to quickly create tropical interior in any room, beautiful and durable. The procedure for gluing them differs in a number of significant features.

Hanging bamboo wallpaper - pros and cons

These wallpapers are called “bamboo” for the most legal reasons - all outer surface It consists of strips of real bamboo glued onto a special fabric. The stems are first dried for several months, after which only the stems are cut upper layer as a decorative element. The obvious advantages of “wallpaper bamboo” include:

  • Absolute naturalness and ecological impeccability. The point is not only in the nature of the growth of bamboo trees - their wood does not respond well to any painting procedures. The maximum possible treatment for bamboo wallpaper is a thin layer of varnish applied at the factory;
  • Natural beauty natural wood. High-quality wallpaper made of bamboo is almost impossible to distinguish from massive ones wood boards, even when carefully studying them from a minimum distance;
  • Antistatic and insulating qualities, which paper and vinyl wallpapers do not have in principle. After such finishing, the room becomes noticeably warmer, although not so much as to exclude the insulation of the walls from the inside with penoplex only thanks to bamboo wallpaper;
  • Unique and durable design premises - the prevalence of the repair method is still low, and the strength of bamboo slats is very significant;
  • This wallpaper does not absorb dust. Anyone who lived in rooms with porous wall coverings would install this advantage to first place;
  • With regular care (that is, periodically wiping the planks with light movements of a damp cloth), the original appearance wall repair will last for several decades - and this is not an advertising exaggeration, but a true bamboo fact.

If, after studying the previous six points, you are asking the question “Why do I still not know how to glue bamboo wallpaper, the embodiment of a finishing dream?!”, then do not rush into enthusiasm. Wallpaper material based on natural bamboo has significant repair disadvantages:

  • It fades in the sun, even under the oblique rays of our luminary through double-glazed windows. Living rooms there is no such thing as without windows - therefore, in a year or two the illuminated wall will be a radically different color compared to the others;
  • Fire danger. Yes, bamboo wallpaper is treated with fire retardant compounds in factories, but strong impregnation has a bad effect on their color. Fire in bamboo-lined rooms is very dangerous!
  • Embossed wood covering It looks good from an aesthetic point of view, but its mechanical strength leaves much to be desired. Even with a hard brush you can peel off the varnished planks, and the consequences of sharpening cat claws or violent children's games will be the most disastrous for bamboo;
  • Limitation color solutions as payback for the naturalness of the color. Natural bamboo comes in yellow, beige, greenish and Brown, limited to the same palette color choice such wallpaper;
  • High cost of coating and difficulty in gluing. We will try to highlight typical installation problems below, but the high price of bamboo wallpaper remains an objective reality, which is given to us as a financial and repair feeling.

If you nevertheless decide to cover the walls with wallpaper made of natural bamboo, it is better to start from the corridor or hall - those rooms where there are no natural light. When choosing wallpaper, pay attention to how the strips are attached to the fabric base. If it is made not only with glue, but also with stitching with special threads, the bamboo will stick to the fabric much longer and more reliably. The width of the slats can be from 5 to 25 mm - choose slats of medium width, within 10-15 mm, they are easier to cut and glue.

Glue for bamboo wallpaper - conditions for self-sufficiency

The situation with adhesives for bamboo wallpaper is somewhat paradoxical. The special adhesive for bamboo wallpaper that comes with the rolls is not a universal repair solution.. It is much more important to carefully study the instructions included with the wallpaper than to rely on this glue.

For plastered and/or puttied walls, feel free to use the proprietary adhesive composition recommended by the manufacturer. For surfaces made of fibreboard, chipboard and plasterboard partitions, high-quality PVA glue is suitable, but you will have to glue it quickly, PVA “sets” quickly. For walls with combined finishing better to apply liquid Nails, they provide strong adhesion of the fabric base to dissimilar surfaces.

Bamboo rolls are heavy and bulky and must be glued end to end. The direction of pasting can be either horizontal or vertical; the choice is dictated by the dimensions of the room and the dimensions of the roll cutting. If you attach a decorative strip to each wallpaper joint, the durability of the “bamboo” repair will increase many times over - unfortunately, the labor intensity of the finishing will also increase.

How to glue bamboo wallpaper - decorating walls with wood rolls

A typical installation of bamboo wallpaper consists of the following installation steps:

How to glue bamboo wallpaper - step by step diagram

Step 1: preparatory

We clear the walls from old plaster, from rags of wallpaper from the previous generation, paint residues or whitewashing with steel or plastic spatulas. We do this in the entire room at once in order to complete the “dirty” repair stage and move on to finishing work. It is better to seal cracks, holes and potholes in the walls with alabaster or an alabaster-sand mixture (for large-sized irregularities). Wallpaper will cover such flaws - but on a solid surface the glue holds better and more reliably. Many masters advise to quickly “go through” the walls thin layer adhesive plaster, then their subsequent pasting will become even easier.

Step 2: marking

Pasting begins from the corner, moving towards the light source in the room (window or lamp). When working with bamboo wallpaper for the first time, the strips are cut one by one. This is dictated by the complexity of sawing work. It is necessary to cut the bamboo strips taking into account the subsequent fastening of the decorative slats; they are cut with a hacksaw or a sharp knife (depending on the thickness of the slats). You need to leave a clean strip of fabric base, half the width of the decorative strip. In addition, fabric without bamboo is easier to join together - moreover, you can leave a small gap between the strips. The main thing is that the size of this clearance is constant throughout the entire height.

A point is marked at a distance of the width of the roll from the corner, and a strictly plumb line is measured down from it. It will become a guide for gluing work. If the corner is uneven, the wallpaper strip will have to be cut according to its unevenness - strict verticality of the first strip is required.

Step 3: smear and glue

First, the glue is applied to a roll of fabric spread on the floor, evenly over the entire surface. While our wallpaper is soaked in the adhesive, we coat the walls with glue. We glue the strip - it is important to apply it accurately right away. It is unacceptable to crawl with bamboo wallpaper on the wall; this is why gluing them is radically different from paper, non-woven, vinyl and many others. Therefore, the accuracy of the first movement is extremely important. After it, the strip straightens from the middle to the center. All strips are glued in the same way to the end of the wall, the last strip is cut lengthwise to ensure the accuracy of the corner joint.

Step 4: finishing

We decorate all joints with wooden planks, installing them in fabric gaps. The fastening of decorative strips is carried out in increments of 40-50 cm by drilling the walls and hammering them into plastic stoppers and tightening it with self-tapping screws. The upper edge of the wallpaper can be designed in a similar way, by installing gypsum rods or other decorative elements.

Why bamboo wallpaper is good - myths, reality and arrangement techniques in 5 steps

Since the beginning of the 2000s, a wave of general passion for environmentally friendly products has brought natural bamboo wallpaper for walls to the peak of popularity, at the same time giving rise to many myths about them. Let’s try to figure out what’s true in these advertising “fairy tales” and why they’re really good, and at the same time I’ll tell you how to hang bamboo wallpaper with your own hands in 5 steps.

Myths and reality

Bamboo is a tree-like plant belonging to the order of cereals. On this moment More than 1000 varieties of bamboo are known, but for finishing surfaces a narrow direction called “tribe-bamboo” is used. Feature This direction is that during the growth process the stem becomes woody.

What is on the modern market

Bamboo finishing is used not only for walls, it is also actively used in the furniture industry, and the same types of cladding are used everywhere, and there are 4 such types in total:

  1. Wallpaper from the outside. The first type is the most popular, but it is also the most expensive; the price for 1 m² now starts from 500 rubles. The top cut of the stem is used here, the coating looks luxurious and performance characteristics he is tall;
  2. Varnished and sanded bamboo from the inside of the stem. It consists of absolutely identical strips polished according to given patterns. Even at the manufacturing stage, these planks are impregnated with protective compounds and varnished; visually, the classic bamboo pattern is not visible in them; this finish is more reminiscent of lining;
  3. Dyed bamboo. Manufacturers position it as a new word in this industry and promise absolute environmental friendliness. In reality, painted planks differ from sanded ones only in their original colors and the absence of varnish. In general, the product is not for everyone;
  4. Thin bamboo mats known since Soviet times, only now they are called stitched. Low price due to the fact that the planks here are practically not processed with anything, but on the other hand, you get absolutely natural canvases. True, not everyone likes thin (1 - 2 mm) single-color mats.

Most models of bamboo canvases are now produced on a fabric basis, but classic wallpaper They are based on rice paper.

The width of the planks ranges from 5-30 mm. The thickness largely depends on the texture, the thinnest mats are 1 mm thick, and the thickness of natural sheets from the upper part of the stem, as well as polished planks, can reach up to 25 mm.

As befits wallpaper, the product is sold in rolls, the minimum roll width is 900 mm. The maximum for serial models is 2.5 m. Wide rolls are convenient because the planks can be placed vertically or glued diagonally without connecting fittings.

Relatively recently, woven bamboo wallpapers have appeared on the market; they are elastic, easy to glue and look original, but are expensive.

Real pros and cons

I will not list the standard set of advantages that advertising promises; instead, we will try to evaluate all these advantages from a critical point of view.

  • Wear resistance- every second instruction for such a coating promises that the cladding will last for 20 years or more. But this is true only for top-class coatings from the upper part of the stem, and in rooms with a humidity level no higher than average, for example, in the kitchen;

Sanded planks can last 30 years, plus some models are allowed to be installed even in bathrooms, but we are not talking about environmental friendliness here, because they are impregnated with waterproof urethane-alkyd varnishes;

  • Noise insulation- any wall covering provides a certain level of sound insulation, while bamboo wallpaper does not have any outstanding sound insulation characteristics. So vinyl wallpapers bamboo and real mats provide equal protection from noise;

  • Simple sticking- this is the honest truth; even an amateur can cover a room with such wallpaper. Moreover, a slight curvature of the walls is not a problem for such a coating; there is no need to create a perfect plane, the main thing is that the base is strong and does not crumble;
  • Easy care- the truth is, any bamboo can be washed with a soft sponge and gentle detergents;
  • Communication skills- bamboo wallpaper can be combined with any materials, the main thing is that the color scheme matches. The latest trend is considered to be real bamboo and 3D photo wallpaper in the interior of the living room and bedroom.

There are only 2 noticeable disadvantages of this wallpaper - a serious price and fear of high humidity. Although if you cover bamboo with yacht varnish, then even in the bathroom it will not be in any danger. We’ve sorted out the types, pros and cons, now it’s time to tell you how to glue bamboo wallpaper.

Glue bamboo in 5 steps

As already mentioned, gluing wallpaper is not difficult, I believe that it is even easier than gluing ordinary canvases, the main thing is to choose the right glue for bamboo wallpaper on a fabric basis, we will start with this step.

Step No. 1. Selecting glue

Illustrations Recommendations

Finishing putty.

In principle, it is possible to plant a bamboo sheet on wet putty, but it is wet, and bamboo absorbs moisture and can cause the planks to sag when drying.

Plus, the white putty bleeds through the planks and is difficult to clean later.

Liquid Nails.

Excellent glue, but liquid nails are useless polymer based with solvents, so for the first few days there will be a strong chemical smell in the room.

MULTIFIX glue.

Italian composition with good adhesion to any type of wall. Plus, this glue is highly moisture resistant.

Glue "LACRYSIL".

This composition is positioned as environmentally friendly, it has virtually no odor and firmly holds any type of heavy fabric, including cork and bamboo.

Vinyl compounds.

Domestic composition High Quality at a reasonable price. This glue was originally developed for cork and bamboo.

Step No. 2. Preparing the base

Perhaps the most popular question on the forums is: is it possible to glue bamboo wallpaper onto wallpaper? So, for the lazy people I explain - it’s impossible.

Paper, vinyl, non-woven and other fabrics are much lighter than bamboo and cork, so if you try to stick a heavy coating on a light one, there is a high probability that it will all fall off together.

Water-based paint and whitewash will have to be washed off. The process is simple, take a sponge and warm water wash it off. It is advisable, but not necessary, to clean oil and polymer paints that adhere firmly to the walls. Personally, in such a situation, I scrape off only what falls off on its own.

But even on clean and strong walls you cannot immediately glue bamboo. Before installing heavy coatings, the wall must be treated at least once with strengthening primer, and it is better to use primer deep penetration. Gluing can begin only after the soil has dried.

Step No. 3. Cutting

You can unravel the fabric along the lamellas with any sharp and durable knife. Home craftsmen usually have a problem with how to cut bamboo across the slats. There are three ways to solve this:

  1. Thin sheets up to 3 mm are relatively easy to cut with metal scissors. I do not recommend doing this procedure with thick lamellas, as they will crack;
  2. A straight, clean cut is obtained when using a hand-held miter saw. I don’t advise you to take a grinder; in general, it is strictly forbidden to use a grinder to cut any kind of wood, it’s too dangerous;
  3. A jigsaw with a fine tooth is equally suitable for both straight and figured cutting, therefore it is used for cutting bamboo more often than all others.

Step No. 4. Glue the panels

Only thick types of glue are used for such wallpaper; you cannot apply it with a brush; there may also be problems with a roller. It is best to take a spatula and spread the composition in a thin layer. First, the canvas itself is lubricated.

Now take a spatula in the same way and spread the glue on the wall in a thin layer. However, if the wall is curved, then the composition will have to be applied in a thicker layer, and accordingly the glue consumption will be higher.

Step No. 5. Completion of work

As such finishing bamboo covering is not needed, but you will have to arrange the joints between the panels and cultivate the edges of the panels, since they are very visible. For these purposes, fitting strips of various configurations are produced. Such planks are either glued with the same glue or nailed with small nails.

If glue comes out between the planks, do not rush to wipe it off immediately; a stain will remain. It’s better to wait until the glue dries and peel it off with a knife.

Conclusion

Each of the steps described is important and it is undesirable to neglect anything, because you are dealing with looking heavy coverings. Some subtleties are revealed in the video in this article.
