What should the wall thickness be?

The thickness of expanded clay concrete walls is determined depending on the purpose of the building. Based building codes and rules (SNiP), the recommended thickness of a wall made of expanded clay concrete for a residential building is 64 cm.

Laying technology

First of all, let's look at the masonry technology. Blocks come in different structures and modifications: hollow and solid. Solid ones are used for the foundation and lower floors where loads are expected. Hollow ones are used to build walls that are subject to minimal load.

The preparation of the base must be level relative to the horizon. If the surface is not horizontal, a strip foundation is first applied. Small irregularities on the surface are not catastrophic; they can be leveled using mortar during the process of laying the first row of the wall.

Laying always starts from the corner of the wall. We apply the solution to the base under the first row; its thickness should not exceed 22 mm.

The layer of solution should be several centimeters narrower than the surface of the block. When the block is compacted, the solution protrudes from underneath it. We apply the mortar exactly under 4 - 5 blocks, there is no point anymore, because it will harden while the first blocks are being laid. Carefully place the block on the mortar using a trowel handle or rubber mallet we drive it in.

We set the rope one division higher. The second and all subsequent rows are laid from the corner. We apply a layer of mortar to the upper edge of the already laid row, and also apply the mortar to the lower edge of the next block. We lay it down and press it tightly.

Afterwards, we tap with the handle of the trowel to adjust it to the required points and rope. We remove excess mortar and fill the side edges between the blocks. During the installation process, use a level to control the verticality of the installation. Also, do not forget about the marks on the staff and the rope.

The masonry of walls made of expanded clay concrete blocks must have a dressing. Every upper layer placed with an offset of half the block along the length. This will ensure the wall is strong and the seams match the height of the block.

Often used for the construction of multi-story buildings monolithic walls from expanded clay concrete. This makes it possible to create a solid structure of the house, with no seams.

Laying methods depend on the width of the expanded clay concrete block.

  1. For construction utility room(garage, warehouse) the width of the wall can be no more than 20 cm. The wall is plastered from the inside, external insulation occurs mineral wool or polystyrene foam is used.
  2. For a bathhouse and similar small buildings, the width of the wall can correspond to the size of the block, not narrower than 20 cm. In this case, the rows are already bandaged. Thermal insulation is used as in the first case, but its layer must be at least 50 mm.
  3. To build a country house or cottage, the width of the wall must be at least 600 mm. The wall comes with a bandage of blocks and special voids between them, which must be left when laying. You need to put insulation in the voids. The inside of the wall is plastered.
  4. Construction of houses in areas with cold climates. When making an external wall, two partitions are made parallel to each other. They are connected using reinforcement. Insulation is placed in the gap between them and both sides are plastered. This method is the most complex, but it provides good thermal insulation premises.
