Today it is not a problem to buy a beautiful set of upholstered furniture or a stylish chair in a store. But some people have reasons why they would like to keep an old sofa, chairs or banquette. However, their unsightly appearance spoils the entire interior. Therefore, old upholstered furniture requires updating.

Ways to update furniture

There are several ways to do this:

  • furniture reupholstery;
  • sew or purchase a cover;
  • make a decorative overlay on the damaged area.

Before you start updating old furniture, you need to make a sketch of what it will look like. Its style and shade should match the interior. In addition, it should remain comfortable as before. After all, this is one of the reasons why they don’t want to replace it with a new one.

The easiest way is to sew a new removable cover or several covers from different fabrics for winter, for summer, lighter and darker on an old sofa or chair. If the upholstery is basically clean and strong, but in one place it turns out to be damaged, for example, by a dog’s claws, you can disguise the damage with a beautiful fabric appliqué.

The most labor-intensive method is reupholstering furniture. This is a complete replacement of the upholstery, and sometimes internal filler. Cheap foam rubber deteriorates especially quickly. It begins to crumble, becomes thinner, and the upholstered furniture ceases to be soft.

How to reupholster a sofa

For reupholstering you need to prepare materials such as upholstery fabric, high-quality foam rubber, synthetic winterizer, furniture stapler with staples, self-tapping screws. The most common and affordable fabrics include jacquard, velor, and tapestry.

Important! You need to buy fabric with a reserve, about a quarter more than calculated during measurements. This is necessary for seam allowances and for overlapping pieces.

Old upholstery can be cut if it is completely worn out, or ripped apart at the seams. In this case, you can still use it to cover chairs, banquettes, and benches in the hallway. In addition, carefully removed fabric will serve as a pattern. It will need to be straightened and, if necessary, smoothed with an iron. Then lay it out on a new canvas and circle it.

At the second stage, you need to remove all the foam and attach a new one. To secure, use a stapler or decorative nails. But it is not recommended to use any nails or screws on the seat to avoid subsequent injuries. Place the staples approximately 2 cm apart. The padding polyester is fixed to the foam rubber. This can be done using the same stapler, needle and thread or glue.

Important! The glue should not be toxic or have a strong smell.

Finally, you can cover the sofa with new fabric. In this case, you need to make sure that the fabric does not wrinkle and is not too stretched. It is secured to the back and bottom of the sofa with a furniture stapler. On the seat in a checkerboard pattern, you can sew buttons on the leg, having previously covered them with the same fabric.

The easiest way to give an old sofa a new look

It consists of replacing sofa cushions. And if they haven’t been there yet, it’s time to put them on the sofa. The more such pillows and pillows of different sizes there are, the more options there are for how to arrange them for convenience. And if you need to seat several people on the sofa, such pillows can always be removed and then returned back. The color of the pillows can act as a contrast compared to the sofa upholstery. It will be great if the pillows and curtains are made of the same fabric. Pillows with faux fur covers will add coziness. long pile or with a hand-knitted pillowcase.

Good afternoon - today I will show you how to reupholster an old sofa, armchair, stool and ottoman with your own hands. I will tell you everything step by step - how to remove the upholstery from the seats, backs and armrests of sofas and armchairs. How to make new upholstery and how to sew it onto a sofa frame. And to make it more interesting and fun for you, I chose furniture in patchwork style. These fun, colorful patchwork sofas and armchairs will inspire you to take on some DIY projects.

The patchwork style (or patchwork, as it is called) is very beautiful in any interior. In this article we...

  1. Let's look at the exclusive upholstery of furniture in this patchwork style.
  2. And I will also give some ideas - HOW TO MAKE small pieces of furniture WITH YOUR OWN HANDS - ottomans, chairs, armchairs and sofas in patchwork style. That is, I WILL SHOW STEP BY STEP how to change the upholstery of an ordinary piece of furniture to a fashionable patchwork one.

So let's start getting acquainted with the patchwork style for upholstered furniture.

Patchwork sofa - made from tapestries and furniture fabric.

Here's an example of how matching tapestry fabric can also give an interesting patchwork effect. The sofa turns out to be very picturesque. I will tell you how to replace the upholstery of a sofa in the same article (just below).

But on this patchwork sofa (photo below) we see combinations of different fabric textures. Their roughness and density are approximately the same(this is important in patchwork) - but the texture is different, with a velvet coating of the pattern, with relief stripes, with convex textile spots under crocodile skin.

And here is a patchwork sofa with a bold combination color range upholstery, where semi-matte fabrics are adjacent to satin gloss, and colorful fabrics are combined with patterned and plain ones.

But in the photo below is an example of patchwork, when the upholstery is made from different fabrics, united by a common FLORAL THEME. A very beautiful replacement for furniture upholstery. Below I will tell you how to do such a change of upholstery with your own hands.

And here is an example of a sofa, where all the flaps have same square shape– tiled effect.

Such upholstery for a sofa is created in the same way as ordinary ones... Only the fabric for updating is not taken whole, but already cut and sewn from scraps. Such a patchwork fabric is spread on the floor and the necessary element is cut out from it for upholstery of the back, seat or armrest.

Sofas are fairly simple pieces of furniture.

And don't be afraid of them.

The sofa consists of three elements - this wooden frame+ springs or foam rubber + upholstery fabric.

In the photo below we see a wooden frame. And furniture strips are attached to this sofa frame (crosswise), and furniture springs are already sewn to them (also visible in the photo). Then foam rubber and another layer of elastic padding are simply laid on top, and then fabric is placed on top.

As a result, we get a sofa like this (by the way, it would be more fun in a patchwork style).

HOW TO CHANGE THE UPHOLSTERY of a sofa or chair - with your own hands.

Patchwork upholstery of a chair or sofa can be done at home. It's simple.

I remember in my childhood, When the upholstery of our chairs and sofa began to look not quite fresh, my parents unscrewed the bolts and disassembled the sofa.

That is, they pressed out the metal staples (with which the upholstery is nailed to the wood-foam frame.

Then they removed the upholstery, turned it over with the fresh side out and stapled it back.

Although I’m lying (we didn’t know staplers and staples then). So dad nailed all the upholstery with tiny nails with plastic spacer heads. The result was elegant new furniture. We were very proud that we updated the furniture like this.

Using the same principle, you can make a patchwork chair in a patchwork style with your own hands

  1. If your sofa or chair is not solid frame - but consists of individual parts, then you need to disassemble it, unscrew the bolts, disconnect the parts from each other
  2. Using a flat-head screwdriver, pry out and press out the staples holding the upholstery fabric on each part and remove the upholstery.

Removing the upholstery of a chair or chair is faster. A small armchair or stool. so the work will not take so long.

And removing the upholstery from the sofa is already more fuss. Here in the photo we see how this process occurs.

After the upholstery is removed (it goes to the pattern sample).

And the sofa frame with foam rubber can be modified... If the foam rubber is pressed in, it can be replaced (partially or completely) or foam rubber can be placed in the dented places.

And I myself The WOODEN FRAME of the sofa can be painted in a new color. Like in the photo below - we make a white frame from a dark frame (we paint it with acrylic paint - it is odorless, it can be glossy or matte).

  1. And the upholstery removed from the sofa (or armchair or chair) will be a sample for cutting a new one. Here in the photo below, we see how the old upholstery is used as a template for cutting out new upholstery.

Only our details old upholstery we will lay onto a ready-made patchwork fabric. I'll tell you how to make a patchwork fabric in a special lesson(and then a link to it will work here).

  1. We make a patchwork fabric - we put old upholstery on it, trace it with chalk and cut it out along the contour.
  2. And we nail the new patchwork upholstery (a copy of the old one in shape) back to the wood-foam part of the armchair, sofa, chair. To do this, you can rent a stapler (tool rental services are available everywhere, you can find them in the newspaper or on the Internet).

  1. And we do this with each piece of the pattern - we return the new upholstery piece to its place on the wooden furniture frame.
  2. Then we assemble the chair again - we put the parts together - we tighten the bolts. And we get a new handmade patchwork chair.

But if the foam on your chair is worn out, then it would be a good idea to replace the foam filling of the sofa and chair too. To do this, you can call a trained person (or watch a few videos on YouTube on this topic and try to do it yourself). In fact, it's not that difficult anymore.

This is how beautiful patchwork furniture looks in the interior of a modern home.

Renew an old chair - everyone can do it. You just have to start... then continue... and then finish. That's all.))

But if you doubt your abilities as a novice craftsman, you can start with a small experiment - replacing the upholstery on a small piece of furniture. For example, on a chair.

HOW TO CHANGE THE UPHOLSTERY OF A CHAIR - in patchwork style.

(quick and easy with your own hands)

We treat the upholstery of old chairs in the same way as with the upholstery of a chair - it can be replaced simply and easily.

The seats can be removed very easily - even with my almost childish hands (I was 17 years old) I made new upholstery for the chairs... Without any master classes - just on a whim: let me, I think, I’ll see how all this is removed here. And I figured it out - I made new seats. She was as happy as an elephant.

Here's how to replace a chair's upholstery:

They removed the seat from the chair, wrapped it in new upholstery patchwork fabric, the edges of the fabric were turned to the wrong side and secured with staples.

And then we sewed a piece of thick fabric on top of this bottom of the seat (white fabric in the photo below) so that it covered all our uneven edges of the flaps. E That underlying tissue was also fixed with staples. You can apply glue or double-sided tape here and there (optional).

And a note...

Sometimes it happens that an old chair's plywood seat (on which the foam rubber is attached) has decayed or broken.

Then you can cut a new one out of plywood. Or you can do base for the seat made of fastening rigid furniture tapes. They are stapled crosswise to the frame of the chair (like in the photo below) and a foam seat is attached to this base.

Then such a wicker base on the back side of the chair is sewn up with canvas - also using staples (photo below).

Also, if you sew such FURNITURE STANDARDS on the back of a chair, you can completely change its shape and turn the chair into a small chair.

And then our patchwork chair with a new shape of a solid back will look completely different.

DIY CHAIR COVER – in patchwork style.

Here we see a simple cutting of a chair cover, where each plane is cut out separately - the back separately, the sides of the cover separately.

And the upper surface of the seat and back of the chair cover is made of separate long strips of fabric, which are sewn together lengthwise (with a patchwork seam).

And then when we get uniform striped fabric upper part, we sew flower appliqués onto it (see in the photo, there are flowers on the back of the chair).

We are these flowers cut out from the fabric on which they are drawn, we glue them to our part of the front of the seat back, glue them onto double-sided adhesive interlining or dublerin (such web fabric is sold in fabric and sewing stores). And when the flowers have been thoroughly ironed and glued to the double-sided double-sided paper, we sew them along the contour (along the edges) with a machine stitch.

And then we sew together all sides of the cover - the backrest + sides + back side of the cover.

By the way (as can be seen in the photo), along the bottom of such a cover you can also glue and sew flower patterns cut out of fabric.

You can also do For chairs, these are patchwork seat cushions.

How to do quilted fabric (with depressed pits)– I’ll tell you now... when we get to replacing the upholstery on the ottomans.

In the meantime, look at this wonderful stool in patchwork style.

The stools are also covered with elegant patchwork upholstery on the same principle...

  1. A foam circle (or square) sits on the glue directly on the seat of the stool.
  2. Then patchwork fabric is placed on top.
  3. The edges of the fabric are folded over the sides of the stool and secured with a stapler.

You can also nail a board to such a stool - for the back (low as in the photo above) and then you will get almost a chair. We wrap this wooden extended back with foam rubber (we put it on glue and staples) and also upholster it with patchwork fabric.

And here’s another idea for do-it-yourself patchwork upholstery – these round armchairs.

Round CHAIRS - with patchwork style upholstery.

To get a pattern for this semicircular chair cover, need to be attached sheet of tissue paper to the back of the chair and trace all the lines with a pencil.

After put the paper on the carpet and straighten the lines, removing their excess curvature of a sloppy pencil sketch.

And then when we have this semicircular pattern for future patchwork chair covers. We can come up with a mosaic filling for it with different pieces of fabric. Complete with applique, embroidery, patches of knitted elements (flowers can be crocheted).

We simply sew such upholstery onto the back of the chair (without a stapler or iron staples) - we wrapped the cover around the back and secured the edges of the patchwork covering with threads - at the bottom with a long seam along its entire edge.

Well, now let’s move on to patchwork style ottomans. We will also make them ourselves.

POTTSONS AND BENCHES – in patchwork style (with patchwork upholstery)

Your ottoman can be any shape: long or small.

It can be made in the same color as the chair. If you have an old ottoman with a dented seat, then it's time to breathe new life into it. Throw away old flattened foam rubber and buy a new one (from a fabric store or hardware store) and create new furniture for your home with your own hands - ottoman in patchwork style.

Its surface can be smooth when the patchwork fabric simply covers the rectangle cut out of foam rubber.

Replacing the upholstery on an ottoman– this is a fairly simple job (compared to an armchair and a sofa).

Therefore, if this is your first experience in updating the upholstery, then start with an ottoman. You'll enjoy the quick results and gain the confidence to take on more serious reupholstery feats. And then you’ll go for grandma’s old chair.

Another surface of the patchwork ottoman can be quilted

HOW TO MAKE A QUILT SURFACE FOR AN OTTOMAN IN PATCHWORK STYLE.

Step one - buttons are made.

Fabric buttons are ordinary buttons with long stems that are wrapped in the same fabric. We wrapped the fabric at the top and at the bottom of the leg, secured it with threads, and held it tight.

Step two - sew the buttons in the right places.

We sew such fabric buttons in even rows to our patchwork fabric.

You can immediately mark the locations of future holes on the foam seat with a felt-tip pen. And by attaching the patchwork fabric to the foam rubber, check the correctness of the rows as you sew on the buttons.

STEP three - create a quilted surface.

When the canvas is laid on the foam cushion, we again pull the thread into each sewn button - we make several turns through the eye of the button and pierce the foam rubber through - into the stretch - so that the button is pressed into the foam rubber.

On the back side of the foam rubber (bottom), we also pick up a button (it doesn’t have to be fancy - a simple button will do) and, threading the thread through the bottom button (under the foam rubber), we again go up through the foam rubber to the top fancy button.

And we do this several times for strength. we pull the thread from the top button (on the patchwork surface) to the bottom button (which is underneath the foam) - and back... And we get a quilted surface - simply and quickly

But you can sew such soft ottomans yourself - without a wooden frame. Filler: synthetic winterizer or foam rubber.

And from the leftover fabric you can make a patchwork frame for a mirror...

Here are some ideas for updating the furniture in your home.

I hope this article has inspired you, and most importantly, relieved the “indecision syndrome” that most novice self-taught craftsmen suffer from.

Everything is simple - and everything is easy... If just START doing things.

Start small– update the upholstery on an old ottoman, chair, stool. If you don't have old furniture in your house, your friends will have it. Or you can buy it for next to nothing at any of the online flea markets. Buy for 100 rubles and turn it into a spectacular thing for 5,000.

Good luck with your bold creativity.

Olga Klishevskaya, especially for the site

A thorough renovation of a room during renovation will be incomplete if you do not take care of its furnishings. You can, of course, buy a completely new set to match the new image of the room. Preparatory operations: disassembly, checking springs, cutting

To carry out a full restoration cycle, the old sofa must first be disassembled. Moreover, disassembly must be carried out in a certain order in order to complete the work with high quality. In many cases this will not be difficult to do, since manufacturers most often make cabinet sofas, which greatly facilitates repair and restoration operations.

The pillows, backrests, ottomans and other overhead elements on it are removed from the specified item. Then use a screwdriver and side cutters (pliers) to remove the old upholstery. This should be done very carefully, since worn-out fabric can tear due to careless movement, and it will later be needed intact.

After “exposing” the internal space, it is necessary to check the integrity and performance of the wooden frame, springs and filler. Cracked or rotten frame bars are replaced with new ones. Also, metal springs (if, of course, they are present in the sofa) are replaced without repair in case of severe wear, weakness or cracks.

When restoring upholstered furniture, it is advisable to change the filling, regardless of its appearance. The fact is that foam rubber, which is most often used as a material for the specified sofa component, is a very short-lived raw material.

Since in recent years the industry has developed a wide variety of modern materials for furniture production, it is recommended to use one of these materials, such as latex or polyurethane foam, instead of foam rubber. For our case, these polymers are valuable because they are designed for a long service life and “hold” their given shape perfectly. At the same time, dense and cheap material (burlap, cotton fabric, etc.) will be used for auxiliary upholstery of the internal elements of the frame, hidden from the human eye.

Now you can start making a pattern for the new upholstery. Old upholstery fabric is used as a kind of pattern for it. It is for this reason that it should be treated with particular care when removed from the frame.

It is better to mark the removed upholstery where it was located, and use it to cut out a new one.

It is strongly recommended that all removed pieces of upholstery be marked where exactly on the sofa they were located and carefully laid out on the floor. This will make it easier to determine the total volume of new fabric that will have to be purchased for the reupholstery.

After the fabric is purchased, new pieces are cut from the old scraps. Subsequently, they will need to be sewn, maintaining the pattern and paying attention to the quality of the stitches.

Reupholstering old furniture: procedure

To update means to reupholster it.

This term refers to the complete replacement of an outdated fabric “cover” with a new covering, observing all the technological nuances that were used during the initial assembly of the sofa.

By the way, experts advise doing this periodically every 5-10 years. Over approximately this period, the fabric and frame wear out greatly, and the owner of the specified item begins another rearrangement in his apartment. And if he does not get the feeling that the sofa is morally outdated, then the new zigzag of fashion will force the person to take up updating his furnishings.

To update the frame use wooden blocks of the same size, they are nailed in several places.

The reupholstering process begins with the installation of new rigid frame elements - bars and springs. To replace damaged wooden elements, new bars must be cut in strict accordance with the dimensions of the old ones. During installation, metal fasteners and furniture glue are used. It is better to select suitable springs without special skills with the help of specialists.

New cut fabric fragments along the edges must first be stitched on sewing machine. After this, they are placed in the places where their previous “doubles” were previously located. Next, they are nailed to the frame with furniture nails or using a stapler, all the time bending the edges of the fabric inward so that rough, unsightly seams do not form. At the same time, you should constantly stretch the fabric.

According to another version of the reupholstery, you should sew original covers from fabric blanks, the shape and size corresponding to the seat upholstery and the back of the sofa. When the covers are ready, they are simply put on the specified structures and sewn up. Finally, the individual removable parts of the sofa are assembled in the reverse order of disassembly. Sometimes people become attached not only to living beings, but also to the city, home and even furniture. After all, sometimes you don’t want to throw away your favorite chair or ottoman, which brings you warmth, coziness and convenience. But what to do if your favorite thing is outdated? Believe me, it is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. You just need to breathe new life into it, that is, update the upholstered furniture. Of course, you can call specialists and pay a lot of money to reupholster and reconstruct furniture, but it will be easier and more interesting to do it yourself, putting all your original ideas into your favorite thing.

First, make a sketch of your plan, think about what your “new” furniture will look like. The decor style of the converted product must necessarily match the entire appearance of the room or space. Thus, by choosing suitable textiles, you can easily and for little money update and add fashionable chic to even the most “decrepit” sofa or soft ottoman.

Style

By choosing the right design style, you can transform any outdated upholstered furniture beyond recognition:

sofa in modern style

  • The glamorous empire style prefers strict lines and striking color contrast. Upholstery in bright red, yellow mixed with rich lilac, pearl gray or white will make your old chair the best showpiece in the interior of the room;
  • For minimalism, use monochrome color tones, simple textures and bright warm shades;
  • The country style, beloved by many, suggests the use of rough fabrics and provincial simplicity (burlap, thick fabrics, canvas).
  • Ways to update upholstered furniture

    The first and easiest way is to sew covers on the sofa, armchairs or chairs. Today this is a fairly fashionable and popular option, in which updating upholstered furniture occurs quite quickly and without special costs. Heavy velvet covers or light and cheerful “clothes” for furniture with all sorts of decorative elements in the form of ruffles, ruffles or bows will perfectly update your “worn” furniture. In addition, the covers are quite practical. After all, they can always be washed or replaced with new ones. Having purchased required material and sewing the chosen style, having previously treated all the edges with an overlocker, the cover should be secured with an elastic band so that it does not slip off the furniture.

    The second way is to create an applique that will be appropriate on both new upholstery and old fabric. With its help, you can hide the flaws that have formed or even give the furniture your own special style. Applications can be sewn onto upholstery fabric, glued, or applied with special fabric paints under a stencil.

    updated sofa with new upholstery

    But the most common method is reupholstery. At the same time, the very shape of the old furniture will remain the same, but its appearance, using fabric with bright color, unusual texture, can be radically changed. When starting work, you must first completely disassemble the old product.

    Reupholstering a sofa or easy chair

    For reupholstery you will need:

    1. Foam rubber. It is used to make the product soft.
    2. To separate the upholstery and internal filler, padding polyester is used.
    3. The upholstery fabric itself. For furniture that will often be used for its intended purpose, it is best to choose a dense and wear-resistant material.
    4. Working tools: a fairly sharp knife, a ruler, scissors, a construction tape and a special stapler with staples.

    As mentioned earlier, the fabric for the constriction should be very dense. Synthetic leather, beautiful jacquard or tapestry are perfect here. It is very important to calculate correctly required quantity footage with a good and sufficient margin. If the upholstery material has a pattern, then to combine all its details it is necessary to increase the fabric consumption by about 25%.

    sofa cover

    After you remove the old upholstery, do not rush to throw it away, because it can become a good pattern for a new covering. Spread out on the floor new fabric front side down, place the old one on it and straighten it thoroughly, removing all unnecessary wrinkles. When drawing a contour, be sure to remember that old material can become deformed during the operation of the product. When carefully cutting out the stencil for future upholstery with scissors, it is better to make a larger allowance for allowances. All excess fabric is removed during work.

    The next stage is replacing and laying foam rubber on those parts that need to be updated. Then we put padding polyester and cover it with new upholstery material. After making sure that the upholstery is in the desired position, we fix it with a stapler. The staples need to be fastened every 2 cm, making a careful bend and watching the upholstery so that it does not wrinkle or move.

    Pay due attention to the wooden elements of upholstered furniture, because they have also become worn out over time and need proper restoration. It is best to re-varnish wooden openwork overlays, armrests, legs and other solid elements or paint them (also under varnish), if it is appropriate in the overall style of the room. The wooden surface is first carefully treated with sandpaper. Cracks should be eliminated using a special putty for wood, followed by surface treatment, but with fine sandpaper. After all the preparatory procedures, the wood is coated with varnish of a suitable color.

    According to this simple principle You can update any old furniture. Of course, every task requires skill and experience, and in order to understand all the intricacies of the work, it is better to start with simple products, for example, an ottoman or a chair, and only then begin updating more complex upholstered furniture.

    Repair of cabinets and bedside tables

Moreover, each of them can become a real decoration for your apartment. To do this, see how to restore old furniture with your own hands below.

    Chair repair

    It’s hard to imagine any home without chairs. Today it is such a commonplace item that few people pay attention to it. This can happen in two cases - either when the chair is properly designed as an interior item, or when it breaks. We will look at how to get from the second option to the first.

    An option for restoring old armchairs with covers in a vintage style

    The chair consists of three main elements:

    • legs;
    • seats;
    • backrests

    All of them can fail sooner or later. If the breakage is caused by the legs, then they must be firmly secured, as otherwise the use of the chair becomes dangerous. If the seat is broken, it can be replaced by cutting out a corresponding piece from plywood or fiberboard. The same can be done with the back. You can also make the stool soft if desired. To do this, soft foam-based upholstery must be attached to the seat and backrest.

    Advice! If you decide to install or replace the upholstery on a chair, it is best to use fabric stitched to the foam. You can find one in a textile store, and you should attach it using a construction stapler.

    Old furniture: photos of design options using painting

    As you know, any piece of furniture should be not only functional, but also attractive. Therefore, when old furniture is updated, a photo of which you can see below, it is necessary to divide the work into several stages. The first stage is surface preparation.

    New life for an old bed frame natural wood– painted in soft turquoise

    Advice! It is best to use water-based acrylic paint. It does not contain toxic substances, does not emit a strong odor and dries quickly. At the same time, the surface takes on a glossy, attractive appearance. But if you are good with an aerosol can, then this will do.

    Decoration

    Restoration of old furniture, photos of which are presented below, includes decor. you can use various techniques and combine them. The most common is decoupage. To do this you will need the following:

    • the required image printed on paper;
    • PVA glue;
    • glue brush;
    • varnish, preferably water-based acrylic;
    • brush for applying varnish.

    Decoupage is a fascinating activity, and furniture made using this technique looks very delicate and unusual.

    Advice! It is best to use large colored napkins with appropriate motifs as images.

    Lubricate the surface with glue, carefully apply and smooth the picture. Let everything dry a little, then open it with varnish. It is worth noting that there is no doubt about the effectiveness of using this method when restoring old furniture with your own hands.

    Another equally interesting decoration method is applying patterns using lace. For this you will need:

    • lace;
    • paint of the appropriate color;
    • scotch.

    Take a piece of lace and apply it to the place you plan to decorate. Secure the ends with tape. It is advisable to cover the remaining area with paper or film. Apply paint with a brush or use aerosol cans. Let the product dry. Remove the tape, paper and lace.

    Advice! If you want to decorate a large area, it is best to use a piece of guipure of the appropriate size.

    Both of the above methods are quite effective. Instead of lace and guipure, you can use paper templates. As a rule, often when decoupage and restoration of old furniture, wallpaper left over after renovation is used.

    Upholstery of upholstered furniture

    Over time, the upholstery of sofas and armchairs not only loses its attractive appearance, but can also sag significantly and become not as soft as before. It is quite possible to sew removable covers from clothing fabrics.

    If the sofa is not intended for decoration, but for relaxation of all family members, then you will need strong upholstery that will last for quite a long time.

    Necessary materials

    To begin work on replacing old upholstery, the first step is to decide what fabric you choose the color scheme, with or without a pattern, artificial or natural material. There are many different furniture fabrics.

    Each fabric has technologically advanced and multifunctional quality levels.

    Let's decide what materials will be needed. Besides the fabric itself Need accessories, foam rubber required thickness, piping to cover the seams, felt, padding polyester or batting as a filler, zipper, marker needles, decorative buttons.

    Required Tools

    Selected fabric – it needs to be taken with a margin for the possibility of error, now let’s prepare the tools that will be needed: a sewing machine, a set of needles, strong threads (polyester), a flat-head screwdriver, a hammer, an anti-stapler to remove old staples, pliers, spanners(from 8 to 19 mm), side cutters, furniture stapler, scissors, staples (6-8 mm), sewing meter, square, metal ruler, chalk, screwdriver, drill, glue.

    The necessary set of tools.

    The reupholstering process: step-by-step instructions

    All work is divided into stages. First you need to disassemble the furniture . We remove all pillows, cushions, and decorations. Then using necessary tools separate the back and sides of the sofa.

    Disassembly with removal of individual components in the form of pillows, sides, poufs.

    We dismantle the seat and separate the furniture from the base. The parts needed for fastening need to be placed in some container; they may be needed.

    All fasteners are placed together so as not to lose them.

    The next step is to dismantle worn upholstery using a staple remover or a flathead screwdriver. old fabric You can leave it - it will be easier to cut out patterns using it. We remove dirt and dust accumulated inside. Old foam rubber should be thrown away and replaced with new one.

    The work requires a certain amount of care so as not to tear the old covering and use it as a template for cutting out parts from new fabric.

    Let's look at the condition of the spring block and frame. If necessary, we carry out repairs. We strengthen all the joints and tighten the screws.

    All screws must be carefully tightened, the joints of the parts must be strengthened, and the wooden joints must be glued.

    On old fabric We cut out new patterns from the selected material, leaving seam allowances. We fasten the parts with special needles and stitch them on a sewing machine. If you don't know how to sew, entrust the work to a seamstress.

    The result of the entire reupholstery of the product largely depends on the quality of the new patterns.

    Now you need to cover the sofa. We attach new upholstery to each individual part, starting with the decorative elements, then the seat, sides, and back. We carry out the tension carefully so that there is no distortion, using a stapler in the work.

    In order not to make a mistake with the amount of material, it is recommended to buy it with a small margin.

    The fabric on the sofa parts is stretched evenly so that there are no distortions.

    Four centimeters - this should be the gap between the staples. Use the remaining material at your discretion. We attach the foam rubber, and its remains will be useful for upholstering other furniture.

    Having finished with the reupholstery, we assemble the structure and return the legs and other fittings to their place.

    How to cover a sofa with your own hands?

    The most significant point in this work is the acquisition of the required amount of fabric. . You can roughly calculate how much you need by adding the length and width of the sofa and multiplying the resulting amount by two. For example, a sofa has a size of 2 x 1.8, then you will need to buy 7.6 m of fabric. To find out exactly, draw the layout necessary elements, taking into account the fractional direction. You need to be very careful when calculating corner sofas, because they have a complex shape.

    When choosing fabric, you should avoid synthetic and very coarse varieties.

    It must be remembered that material having large drawing or striped, it is necessary to cut in one direction, accordingly, the cost of fabric will increase. It is very important to consider seam allowances. You definitely can't go wrong with upholstery fabric. with a margin of one meter. It is worth considering the fact that you will need to change the filler. Compacted foam rubber and a layer of padding polyester are quite suitable for this purpose.

    The structure of some pieces of furniture may include parts filled with thick foam rubber. This causes certain difficulties. To avoid this, foam rubber is wrapped in thin padding polyester, then attached and wrapped in upholstery fabric.

    High-quality foam rubber has very small pores in its structure. After squeezing with your hand, it immediately straightens and takes its previous shape.

    This will help you quickly and thoroughly complete the necessary work and assemble the parts correctly.

    The final stage is decoration

    The sofa is the most important piece of furniture. We gather there with the whole family, relax after work, watch TV, and sometimes it’s just great to lie around, covered with a cozy blanket. Its color scheme is significant in the design of a room.

    How to make an old sofa sparkle with new colors?

    You can sew stripes or squares yourself, using fabrics of different colors, or combine them.

    Most perfect option- This is a replacement cover. If you don't want to sew it yourself, buy it at the store. Now there is a very large selection of different colors and models. They have different features, including water-repellent, and even ones that are resistant to the sharp claws of your pets. Well, the simplest option is to cover the sofa with a blanket or two.

    This will create a cozy atmosphere that sets you up for relaxation.

    Pillows with new covers of different colors will add some zest to the sofa. Saturated shades are best placed in the center, neutral shades are preferable at the edges. If you like a style such as eclecticism, then feel free to use all your imagination - combine incompatible things. Sofa cushions can be either square, round or triangular, large or small, different colors, different fabrics, even fur.

    The color of the pillows can be matched to the curtains, lampshade, and chair.

    Padding furniture is a fun activity that doesn’t present any particular difficulties. The main thing is to do everything according to the rules, and you will have original old furniture at home that will serve for many years to come.
