A sink embedded in the countertop is practical and beautiful! How to embed a sink into a countertop - step-by-step guide, installation instructions Installing a sink into a countertop

A kitchen sink should be able to withstand absolutely everything. Hot pots and pans, detergents, ice water and much more. Finding one is very difficult. Washing from of stainless steel called eighteen over ten. This is the percentage of chromium and nickel that is part of stainless steel. This sink is resistant to corrosion, temperature, household acids and detergents.

Sinks can be mortise or overhead. The first ones cut into the tabletop, the second ones are simply placed on the furniture like a lid.

Overhead sinks are considered the most budget-friendly and easiest to install.

Mortise ones are installed directly into the tabletop, for which you need to cut out the corresponding hole

Undermount sinks are mounted below the countertop, providing excellent sealing and appearance

The choice of coverage is small. Either mirror or matte. Decorated stainless steel differs from smooth steel in being thicker, less noisy and more durable. IN general maintenance. Minimum scratches guaranteed if the wash is responsive state standard. It is recommended to check the quality of your purchase using a magnet. High-quality stainless steel does not attract him. A high-quality alloy sink will cost no more than five thousand rubles. This is one of the cases when better price meets quality.

The metal sink fits most interiors, is simple and reliable in operation, and easy to clean.

A porcelain stoneware sink will cost about twelve thousand rubles. But the quality of porcelain stoneware is always at the level. Shape, size, smoothness of bends - all this does not play a fundamental role in the functioning of the sink. It's a matter of taste. It was revealed that for convenience, the sink should be at least 25 centimeters in length. And at least fifteen centimeters deep. When choosing a sink, you need to carefully examine it. The enamel should be even and smooth. There should be no protrusions or depressions. It should have two holes for the mixer and drain.

The porcelain stoneware sink is durable and strong, environmentally friendly, available in the most different colors and configurations, but more expensive

Methods for installing a sink into a countertop

Mounting diagram for a mortise sink

Before you install drop-in sink, you need to decide on the place where it will stand. To begin installation, measure four centimeters from the far edge of the tabletop and six centimeters from the near edge of the tabletop. Take a pencil and mark.

We use a cardboard blank to apply the most accurate outline to the base of the tabletop

To accurately cut the gap for the bowl, apply a sink reverse side and use it as a stencil. We outline it, it turns out to be an oval or a circle. We remove the bowl and trace it again with a thicker trace. We make another contour a centimeter deeper. We cut along this trace. We make a hole for a jigsaw in any convenient location without going beyond the contour. Cut out a circle. To ensure an even cut, we use saws with straight teeth. To prevent the sawn oval from falling through, we secure it from below with ordinary self-tapping screws.

We cut out a niche from the front side of the tabletop using a jigsaw

We install crabs on special brackets, which will cling the sink to the countertop. Before installation, install a siphon and tap under the countertop. It's much more convenient. We immediately screw the hoses onto the tap. To be safe, you can screw in a couple more screws and continue. After finishing cutting out the oval, you can dismantle it. To do this you need to hold it well. We install the sink in its place. After installation, coat the end of the cut with sealant.

Apply a layer of sealant to the edge of the tabletop (cut) to protect wooden surface from moisture penetration and will prevent the wood from swelling

Can be used as a sealing method

In the future, if moisture gets under the sink, the countertop will not swell. We connect the tap. We use the siphon.

You can use special fasteners to securely secure the sink to the countertop.

We install the sink carefully so as not to damage installed siphon and the mixer and do not touch the applied sealant

We connect the mixer and siphon to the pipes and check the work done

Installing a stone sink into a countertop

Scheme of inserting a sink into a countertop

Stone sinks are eighty percent stone and twenty percent bonding materials. Stone sinks can withstand heavy loads, do not conduct electricity, are not exposed to aggressive substances, and are safe for food. We measure the dimensions of the sink in the countertop using a ruler and pencil. We take the sink, turn it over, circle it.

We outline the sink with a pencil and, stepping back inward by 1.5-2 cm (depending on the size of the side of the sink), draw a cutting line

We measure exact dimensions. Drill a hole. We take a jigsaw and install it in drilled hole, cut out a circle. We apply the sink, it should fit exactly in the cut place.

When everything is sawed, you can simply remove the inside of the tabletop

We coat the edges with silicone using a construction gun. Apply a thick layer of silicone in a circle. Spread the silicone while cutting with a rag or glove. We also apply sealant to the sink. After that we install it in the cabinet.

Carefully turn the sink over and insert it into the hole, being careful not to touch the sealant applied to the edges.

The hole for the mixer should be closer to the wall. We put some weight in it to press it well. Leave for twelve to 20 hours. Remove excess silicone. We connect the mixer and siphon.

We install a siphon and mixer on the sink and connect the siphon to the sewer pipe

Installing an integrated sink into a countertop

The integrated kitchen sink creates a unified composition with kitchen countertop and requires skills in working with tools, so it is better to entrust the expensive option to professionals

Such equipment is one piece with the countertop and sink. Higher demands are placed on him. These devices are thicker than conventional ones and have a longer service life. Just as for installing previous types of sinks, we make a hole in the cabinet, clearly measuring the dimensions. You can order templates for installing any sinks. So, we mark the future hole and cut it out. Sharp edges are removed with a milling cutter. The curves are then sanded by hand. Polymer glue is applied. After application, install the sink. It is fixed and left for 12 hours. Finally, the shell is additionally fixed by filling it from the bottom with quickly hardening resin. It is important that the filling compound is applied only to the side walls. Then waterproofing is done using adhesive or aluminum tape. Remove excess glue after the filling compound has hardened. Connect water and drain.

Installation of siphon and sink mixer

Scheme for assembling a sink with a siphon into the sewer outlet

Siphons have two main parts: main, small. They are collected together. A plastic nut is inserted into the small one. The rubber seal is inserted under the nut. The small part is inserted into the larger one. The nut is screwed in until it stops. But even if you tighten the nut, most of it will move a little. This is necessary so that we can place the corrugation in a comfortable position. Into the tube that is on the larger part. Next to the one into which we screwed the small part. We insert a rubber seal into the second nut. We screw the second part of the siphon into this tube, which will be attached to the bottom of the sink and countertop. Screw the nut until it stops rubber gasket snuggled well. Screw the inspection cover into the siphon. If there is a blockage, you can unscrew this cap, clear the blockage and screw the cap back on. It is easier to install the siphon before installing the sink, and not vice versa. We screw the screw into the siphon until it makes a characteristic creak. No need to twist. All that remains is to install the corrugation. To do this, first insert the nut and seal, insert it into the siphon, and screw it in until it stops. Now you can connect to the sewer from the countertop.

It is important to choose the right countertop faucet. First, you need to decide how you want to turn on the water. Turn a faucet or raise and lower a lever. You can choose everyone for yourself suitable design. It's worth remembering that low price And fashion design- This is a sign of low-quality production. It is better to buy a simple European faucet. When purchasing it, you should take into account the quality of the water and the presence of a gas water heater in the house. Faucet prices range from the lowest to the highest. Everything depends on quality. So, let's start the installation. Turn off the hot and cold taps cold water. We screw the flax onto the threaded connections. Apply plumbing paste to the flax. After that we screw it into the water sockets.

You can use silicone sealant. This is done to protect the flax from rotting. We attach flexible hoses to the mixer. There are two of them. Place an O-ring on the base of the mixer. It must be in the groove intended for it, otherwise water will leak. Screw in the threaded pins. There may be one or two of them in the mixer set. We pass flexible hoses through the mounting hole of the sink. In this case, you need to check whether the ring gasket has moved. We fix the mixer from below. We put on the rubber seal. Using an open-end wrench, firmly tighten the nuts over the seal. The crane must not move. We connect the flexible water supply hose to the water sockets. It is important that the hoses do not twist or bend during installation. After all these steps, we check the operation of the new equipment. We open the water and check for leaks.

Industry furniture production provides a huge number to choose from various furniture for kitchen. Sometimes a dishwasher is offered separately and is installed by the buyer independently. This does not require any special knowledge or skills.

To make a hole correctly, you need the simplest tool. The question of how to cut a countertop for a sink is not very difficult. However, if you do not follow certain installation requirements, the installed equipment can be damaged.

The sequence and manipulations performed are similar to cutting a hole in chipboard.

To make a hole correctly, you need the simplest tool.

It's better to do it on outdoors, since there will be a lot of dust during the sawing process.

Relative to level work surface The sink can be installed in the following ways.

  1. Below the table top. This arrangement looks very impressive, but will additionally require the use of a special tool. The sink itself must have a certain form. In this case, it is attached from below using special fasteners. They are usually sold as a set. The open end must be impregnated with a water-repellent agent. At the same time, it must have sufficient thickness.
  2. On the same level. In this situation, it is very important to correctly make the required recess equal to the thickness of the side. It should be perfect around the entire perimeter of the sink being installed.
  3. Above tabletop level. For this type of installation you need the simplest tool. Special Effort will not be required for this installation.

You will need to wear protective gloves on your hands, and protect your face with a special transparent mask.

Sometimes a dishwasher is offered separately and is installed by the buyer independently.

The sealant is used to prevent moisture from entering the areas of contact between the sink and the countertop. Water can greatly damage chipboard. For different surfaces its own sealant is intended. When working with artificial stone, only silicone is used. Sealants containing alcohol are more often used for wood and plastic.

If you decide to cut a hole in the countertop for the sink yourself, you will need a special tool - a grinder with a diamond wheel.

Using a sealant not only prevents unwanted water penetration. This also serves as additional strength to the connection.

If the sink is purchased separately and requires installation, it is advisable to entrust this work to professionals.

Required tools:

  • electric drill
  • electric jigsaw
  • wood drill with a diameter of 10 mm.
  • set of wrenches
  • brush
  • adjustable wrench
  • rasp
  • screwdriver

Before cutting a hole in the countertop for the sink, mark the required hole. To do this, a template is made from cardboard or thick paper. Some manufacturers and manufacturers of sinks include a template with the product itself. If you have chosen the option of installing on a tabletop and the sides are of sufficient width, you can mark without a template. For this, the sink is used as a template. The upper surface is applied to the plane and traced along the contour with a marker or pencil. For ease of installation, it is advisable to remove the tabletop. Having stepped back 0.5 - 1 cm from the drawn line, a working contour is drawn along which the cut is made.

It will look more solid, but it will be more difficult to install a sink into it yourself.

Having marked the cut line, the template is removed and you can begin the process of cutting out the place for washing. A drill is used to drill a place for an electric jigsaw file, approximately 10 mm in diameter. For a quadrangular or triangular sink, holes are made in all corners. If the product has a round or oval shape, one will be enough for the job.

Installing a sink in a countertop made of wood or chipboard is not difficult if you have the required tools and basic handling skills.

The hole and cut are made from the side of the laminate, this will prevent it from chipping. Use a jigsaw to carefully cut out the required hole along the drawn contour. The electric jigsaw must be pressed firmly against the surface. The saw blade should go exactly at a right angle.

The sink is covered with a sealing tape supplied with the product.

The inner part being cut must be supported while doing this work. Or position the tabletop so that when cutting is completed, this part does not fall. With a sharp separation of the remaining and removed parts laminated coating may crack. Or a part will break off from the chipboard.

You can use a drill with a special drill - a furniture crown, just immediately take a drill of the required diameter.

If there is no room for such an arrangement, or the tabletop has not been removed, use construction tape. Sawing is done in this case with stops. A 10-15 cm cut is made, which is then taped on both sides.

A drain is mounted to the bowl and, if provided for by the design, a mixer ( water tap).

After the cutting is completed, the sink is first tried on. It should fit freely, but the gap should not be large. If it fits too tightly, you should widen the installation site with a rasp or jigsaw.

Having marked the cut line, the template is removed and you can begin the process of cutting out the place for washing.

Now you should carefully “sand” the inner end to which the sink will adjoin. This is done with fine-grit sandpaper. The resulting dust is removed and applied to the contact area using a brush. thin layer sealant.

For ease of installation, it is advisable to remove the tabletop.

Installation of sink and connection of communications

A drain and, if provided for by the design, a mixer (water tap) are mounted to the bowl. All gaskets are installed in the required sequence. Typically, the layout of the gaskets is indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging of the mixer and drain siphon. Threaded connections stretch well wrenches or, if necessary, with an adjustable wrench.

When purchasing kitchen furniture with such a surface, it is advisable to already have ready product, which will only require connection to the water supply and sewerage system.

If the structure on which installation is planned does not have holes for water supply and sewerage, they should be cut out. They are done in the same way as for washing. Drilled with a drill and electric jigsaw an opening of the required size is cut out. You can use a drill with a special drill - a furniture crown, just immediately take a drill of the required diameter.

For this, the sink is used as a template.

The sink is covered with a sealing tape supplied with the product. A small gap is left from the edge, which is subsequently filled with sealant. Fastenings are being installed.

Some manufacturers and manufacturers of sinks include a template with the product itself.

Reapply the sealant to the contact areas and let it dry a little, 2-3 minutes. Place the product in place and tighten the fasteners. Secure the tabletop together with it in its place and connect the water hoses. Connect the drain. Once again, go over the joints with sealant, the excess must be removed.

Before cutting a hole in the countertop for the sink, mark the required hole.

Installing a sink in a structure made of other materials

Installing a sink in a countertop made of wood or chipboard is not difficult if you have the required tools and basic handling skills. A countertop made of artificial or natural stone installed in the food preparation area will be more durable. It will look more solid, but it will be more difficult to install a sink into it yourself.

The use of sealant not only prevents unwanted water penetration

When purchasing kitchen furniture with such a surface, it is advisable to have a ready-made product that will only require connection to the water supply and sewerage system.

Sealants containing alcohol are more often used for wood and plastic.

If the sink is purchased separately and requires installation, it is advisable to entrust this work to professionals. In a stone processing workshop, craftsmen will perform the required work without damaging the surface. To do this, they have the appropriate skills and have the entire set of necessary tools.

There is a different sealant for different surfaces.

If you decide to cut a hole in the countertop for the sink yourself, you will need a special tool - a grinder with a diamond wheel. Great care is required when working with this tool. You will need to wear protective gloves on your hands, and protect your face with a special transparent mask.

The sealant is used to prevent moisture from entering the areas of contact between the sink and the countertop.

It is better to do this outdoors, as there will be a lot of dust during the sawing process. The sequence and manipulations performed are similar to cutting a hole in chipboard.

The location for the cutout is selected taking into account minimum distance for draining water into the sewer and connecting the water supply.

Installing a kitchen sink into a countertop plays an important role in the overall design. Carrying out this process with your own hands will not be difficult, even if you have never done this before. If you don’t have enough experience, you should find out, and only then start decorating this part of the apartment.

Necessary materials:

  • directly the sink itself;
  • silicone sealant;
  • pencil for marking;
  • masking tape;
  • thin drills;
  • drill;
  • jigsaw

We first strengthen the cabinet with wooden blocks to prevent the sink from sagging inside the cabinet. After this, the upper edge of the cabinet is treated with a moisture-resistant sealant, and the sink is placed on it.
If you have a sliding sink option, then after assembling the cabinet, the sink simply slides into the grooves.

  1. We are preparing the pattern. If there is no ready-made pattern in the kit, then take a piece of cardboard and trace the sink along inner contour so that the pattern is slightly larger.
  2. Attach the pattern to the tabletop with tape. We trace the cardboard pattern, having previously measured it several times. Consider in advance the convenience of the location of the hole for washing. We detach the glued pattern and stick masking tape around the perimeter to avoid damage to the tabletop.
  3. We drill several closely spaced small holes with a drill with a diameter of 2 mm near the point where the cutting begins. We connect them into one using a chisel big hole. From this place we cut out the wood with a jigsaw.
  4. We treat the edges of the hole with sealant, insert the sink there and press firmly for 1 minute. We remove the remaining sealant and leave everything until it hardens.
  5. We connect the hoses, sewerage and mixer to the sink in series. We check for leaks. The sink is ready for use. After connecting the communications, evaluate the condition of the cabinet and, if it needs additional rigidity, tighten it from the inside with strips.

Epochs change, and with them, life. Modern kitchen equipment differs significantly from the stereotypes that have developed over the years; only some accessories remain unchanged. Nothing is complete without a refrigerator, sink and stove. kitchen area, neither now nor several decades ago. One of the key parts of the work triangle is the sink. And if before it was, as a rule, an enameled overhead structure white, then now the varieties have increased significantly. Modern kitchen sinks are made from various materials, have different shapes, sizes and design features. The owner may not always be able to install such elements. Peculiarities different models, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as tips on how to embed a sink into a countertop - further.

Appearance of a kitchen sink, relevant several decades ago

Installing a sink yourself may involve different technologies. Let's look at the main design types kitchen sinks.

A countertop kitchen sink can have up to two bowls

Types of kitchen sinks:

  1. Overhead models. This type is considered the most common due to its ease of installation. Even a beginner can handle installing an overhead sink. They are usually made of stainless steel and have mainly rectangular shape. Installed on top kitchen cabinet, without a table top.
  2. Recessed sinks. Such accessories are installed in a prepared hole in the tabletop, which must be cut exactly to the size of the structure. The sink is immersed in the hole treated with sealant and fixed with fasteners.
  3. Under-table products. Their installation method is similar to the previous one: the sink is installed in a hole cut in the countertop. The only difference is that not all countertop materials can provide an integrated type of installation, and the cuts of the hole must be processed carefully.

An undercounter or integrated kitchen sink requires a complex type of installation and generally can only be done in a factory setting

One of the important criteria for choosing a sink is its depth. Sink too deep ( 20 cm or more) is not convenient to use, as it forces you to bend over a lot. Shallow bowl ( up to 15 cm) is bad because water tapping on it from an open tap will splash around the entire working area.

The choice of mixer height depends to a large extent on the depth of the bowl. For example, for a deep sink it is better not to choose a faucet with a high spout, as well as for a shallow one with a low one. This all affects ease of use.

A high faucet over a deep sink is inconvenient because the water pouring out of it will splash heavily around

Of all the types of sinks listed above, today's users mostly choose the mortise type. Such sinks are affordable, have a comfortable depth and, importantly, a modern appearance.

Why mortise: reasons for choice

The aesthetic component of a kitchen sink is far from the only criterion for choosing a mortise design. Why do modern consumers love this type of sink so much?

A mortise sink can have either a standard siphon or an expanded hole, which is initially provided for installing a disposer

Design advantages:

  1. Possibility of installation anywhere. By purchasing a product mortise type, you do not depend on the cabinet installed under it. The bowl can be embedded in any place, the main thing is to provide communications.
  2. Lack of moisture. When using an overhead structure, it is impossible to hermetically seal the joints between the modules, the washing block and the walls. Almost always, water flows into the resulting cracks, which is fraught with rapid destruction of furniture and dampness on the walls.
  3. The choice of mortise sinks is much wider than in the case of overhead sinks. They can have different shapes, functionality, number of bowls, materials of manufacture and sets of additional accessories.
  4. Modern appearance combined with affordability. The mortise accessory looks almost like an integrated one, but costs much less.

A built-in sink may include removable cutting boards, grids for washing food and other accessories.

Types of kitchen sinks by shape

The shape of the kitchen sink depends on the number of bowls, type and installation location.

Kitchen units are:

A kitchen sink of complex shape is made exclusively to order and usually has an under-counter or integrated installation type.

Kitchen sink designs can have not only different shapes, but also the number of bowls. Standard models are usually equipped with one or two bowls, while atypical models can have up to four.

Example round sink with four bowls, fruit washing net and cutting board

Types of sinks by material of manufacture

If previously washing accessories for the kitchen were traditionally made only of iron, cast iron or stainless steel, then modern choice materials are much wider.

Artificial stone sinks are the second most popular after stainless steel sinks

So, today on the market you can find shells from:

  • natural and artificial stone;
  • ceramics;
  • natural wood;
  • earthenware;
  • of stainless steel;
  • enameled metal;
  • glass

Kitchen sink made of earthenware or ceramics

The easiest to install are stainless steel sinks. Glass sinks are difficult to maintain, while earthenware sinks are finicky to use. Sinks made of artificial stone require regular cleaning, but few people can afford granite ones.

Installation of a mortise sink: step-by-step instructions

The kitchen sink installation process is divided into several stages. Let's consider installing a mortise sink into a countertop using the example of a stainless steel product and an MDF surface.

Step 1. Preparation.

Pledge successful work- This proper preparation materials, tools and everything necessary. When purchasing a sink, do not forget to check its packaging to ensure it matches the description. Often, small fasteners can get lost during transportation and the packaging is damaged. Check if there are enough clips, if there is a seal, etc.

Don’t rush to throw away the included sink template. This is a great help when marking the surface

Tools for installing the sink we will need:

  • pencil or marker;
  • roulette;
  • level;
  • sandpaper;
  • ruler;
  • drill;
  • jigsaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • adjustable wrench;
  • a Phillips-type screwdriver or a set of cue balls for a screwdriver.

In addition to the sink and its accessories, you will definitely need colorless silicone sealant and hardware (you can never have too many of them).

Step 2. Applying markings.

If there is a template included in the kit, marking is done quite simply: cut out the outer contour and inner diameter sinks made of cardboard (on which everything is drawn out in full accordance with the dimensions), we apply it to the countertop in the right place and trace it with a pencil. To prevent the template from sliding on the glossy tabletop, it can be attached in some places with tape, as shown in the picture below.

Marking on the tabletop using a cardboard template

If there is no template, the markup will be somewhat more difficult to complete. First you need to mark the edges of the sink.

Remember! The sink should not be closer to the edge of the countertop than 10-15 cm.

Next, turn the sink upside down with the bowl, lay it on the table the way it will be installed, align it parallel to the edges of the table and trace the outer contour. For ease of operation, the sink can be secured in some places with tape.

When tracing the outline, do not rush or fuss. The correct installation of the device will depend on the markings performed.

We measure the distance from the outer edge to the bowl, remove the sink from the markings and mark a cutting line inside the drawn contour.

Step 3. Hole in the countertop.

Using an electric drill, we make several holes in a row along the cutting line. The width of the resulting gap should be such that a jigsaw can easily fit into it. Next, take a jigsaw and carefully follow the cut line, slowly and without fussing.

Prices for popular models of jigsaws

Jigsaw

To prevent the cut-out part of the tabletop from falling with a crash to the bottom of the module, secure it in several places with self-tapping screws.

Important! Never turn the tabletop over. Make the cut only from the front side to avoid chipping the enamel.

When the hole is completely cut, the screws are removed and the cut is cleaned of dust and sawdust. A “fitting” is carried out: the shell is first placed in the prepared hole, it is checked that it fits normally, does not “walk” and does not cling to anything.

If washing is difficult in some place, straighten the cut with a jigsaw

Step 4. Processing the cut.

Any particle board absorbs moisture well, so the cut area must be carefully sealed with an antifungal compound and glued sealing tape, which comes with the sink. Before processing, all roughness must be treated with fine sandpaper. Proper protection of the cut from getting wet will prevent rotting of the tabletop material and its rapid destruction.

Instead of antifungal compounds, you can use PVA glue diluted with water in a ratio of 2:1 to process the end cut. After application, the glue must dry

If on front side tabletops, chips appeared on the plastic at the cut site during the cutting process, treat them with silicone sealant. Only after this can the end cut be glued with the included foam sealant. We also seal the side of the sink along the edge with sealing tape.

Step 5. Attaching the sink to the countertop.

We use silicone sealant to treat the cut of the sink, on the sides of the bowl with inside attach clips. We insert the plumbing fixture into permanent place and press well 10-15 seconds. After this, let go, check the level, wipe off excess substance soft cloth and wait for the sealant to completely set, fixing the sink in the groove.

It is better to secure the sink with clips after the sealant has set. This method ensures that the sink will not slip off and, as a result, will not be attached incorrectly.

Step 6. Connecting communications.

How a chipboard countertop is constructed

First, install the faucet and fasten it with a fixing screw. We connect the hoses leading from the tap to the water supply system. When fixing the faucet to the sink, do not forget to use a rubber seal.

On a note. It is better to assemble the mixer before installing the sink by screwing water hoses to it. It will also be more convenient to immediately fix it on the bowl until it is fixed on the countertop.

To ensure the strength of all connections when installing the pipeline, use fum tape.

Do not forget to treat all connections with silicone sealant before installing the siphon and tap.

Upon completion of work, do not forget to check the mixer and sewer system for leaks.

Features of working with artificial stone

Usually, stone countertops are made to order in accordance with the preferences of the buyer, and the hole for installing a sink is provided in advance. But there are also exceptional cases when, for example, it was initially planned to install an overhead sink in the kitchen, and the countertop had to be solid.

An artificial stone countertop is quite difficult to process. It must be handled with care as the material is fragile

For such work it is better to invite a qualified specialist with professional tool which will make a hole required diameter with a properly processed cut and install the sink in accordance with all requirements.

If you decide to make a hole for installing a sink on your own, saving on labor costs, instead of a jigsaw, it is better to take a grinder and when cutting, protect your eyes and respiratory tract from stone dust. The work algorithm is not much different from installing a sink in an MDF countertop.

Note. To work with artificial stone, you need to install a concrete disc with laser chips on the grinder.

Features of installing sinks of different shapes and materials

In the example above, we looked at the installation of a round or oval sink. But what about other products?

Corner sinks

When installing a corner sink, the main nuance is cutting out an even corner. To do this, so that the jigsaw can pass through the tabletop easily, several holes in a row are made in the corners using an electric drill, then they are combined together.

The presence of technological cuts greatly simplifies cutting a hole in the countertop for a sink of atypical shape

Also, when installing a corner sink, it is important that the corner of the sink clearly coincides with the connection line between the outer and internal corners cabinets.

Screwdrivers

Square sinks

When installing a square sink, draw a line on the countertop parallel to the outer edge. The width of the product is retreated from it and another line is drawn. In the same way, measure and mark two perpendicular lines, completely tracing the contour of the sink. Opposite corners are connected by lines; the siphon will be located at the intersection of these lines.

Holes for a jigsaw when installing a square sink are made in the corners of the drawing

Granite products

The design of sinks made of natural stone does not provide technological holes for installing a drain and mixer. And if the mixer can be mounted separately on the wall or on the countertop, then the sink simply cannot do without a siphon. It is very difficult to make such a cut in a stone product yourself without experience. An electric drill with a diamond attachment is used to make such holes.

If you have a granite sink, it is better to entrust its installation to professionals, since without experience, such an expensive product can be quite easily damaged

Earthenware products

For the most part, ceramic kitchen sinks are made mainly in a combined version - part of the sink is a countertop, and part is mounted in the countertop, like a mortise model.

Ceramics, like a natural stone, has quite an impressive weight, so for such sinks you need a very durable cabinet and a strong countertop

Ceramic sinks are attached using a combined method for a more durable fixation. Along with the use of sealant or adhesive, mechanical fastening parts are also used. You can also prepare the internal load-bearing structure. To secure the washing niche, a structure is assembled from wooden blocks treated with antiseptic compounds.

When making a sink hole yourself, measure the sink several times before you start cutting. It is better to make sure that your actions are correct at the initial stage.

When making a hole for the sink, cut it out slightly short of the markings. It's better to sand down a small cutout later than not to know what to do with a large one.

Experienced installers advise:

  1. Do not make the sink hole too large. If the structure “walks” in the groove prepared for it, you can’t even dream about the strength of the fastenings.
  2. Before using silicone, first check how long the substance will harden by applying it to an open surface.
  3. When installing a stainless steel sink, do not overtighten the mounting screws. This approach may damage the product.
  4. If rubber seals was not included in the kit - do not rush to the store. They can be replaced with silicone sealant.
  5. When tightening hardware using a screwdriver, be as careful as possible. By slightly tightening you can bend the structure. If you are not sure that you can calculate your strength correctly, it is better to use a Phillips screwdriver.

Don't skimp on sealant when installing a drop-in sink. It is better to wipe off excess from the surface with a cloth than to use a leaking structure

The most crucial moment when inserting a sink into a countertop is marking the surface, and the most difficult is preparing the hole. One wrong stroke with a pencil or one mistake with a jigsaw in your hands can simply ruin your new countertop. Don’t repeat the mistakes of inexperienced masters, but do everything wisely. Happy installation!

Well, we will try to consider in detail all the pitfalls in order not only to carry out the installation, but also to ensure the durability of the new acquisition.

Installing a sink into a countertop - why do we choose a built-in sink?

There are two ways to organize a kitchen sink – overhead and mortise. In the first case, along with the bowl for washing dishes, you also receive a pedestal or cabinet on which it is placed. But in the second case, the sink is installed in the countertop of your kitchen unit. Most often, buyers' preferences are given to the mortise version, although it is more troublesome to install, it still has a number of advantages that force us to make a choice in its favor.

The first, and most important, argument against an overhead sink is the constant humidity in the kitchen, which forms between the cabinets adjacent to the sink unit. Further, users give arguments such as the variety of assortments and the aesthetics of mortise sinks. Here you can most often find wide choose both materials and forms. Ceramics, porcelain tiles, stone, plastic, stainless steel, copper, bronze – an enviable list, right? And if you diversify this with round, rectangular, angular and various asymmetrical shapes, then your eyes will run wild.

When thinking about how to embed a sink into a countertop, you should keep in mind that it can be installed in three ways: exactly at the level of the countertop, slightly lower and slightly higher. It depends not only on your desire, but also on the configuration of the purchased kit. Find out how the bowl should be positioned and what fasteners are used during installation. Also think about how durable they are, and what can affect their service life, because sometimes the quality of the sink is good, but it is attached almost on parole.

How to embed a sink into a countertop and prepare for the operation?

Before you figure out how to install a mortise sink into a countertop, you should make sure that you have a reliable water supply to the mortise point and that there is also a good sewage system. From strategically important tools, which you will need to search through friends, perhaps more than one day; if you personally don’t have them, you can bring a jigsaw. Without it, starting work is pointless. In addition to the sink, purchased materials must include a sealant, preferably transparent silicone.

When buying a sink, you can get a pleasant surprise- a template for inserting it (it acts as its packaging), otherwise you will have to draw it on the countertop, applying the sink. Also don't forget that if kitchen set completely new, then there are no holes for pipes, in fact, like the pipes themselves, perhaps. That is, the siphon and accompanying hoses are purchased independently; they are rarely included in the washing kit.

If you are just assembling furniture, and you have the option of not securing the table top for now, then do not do it. This will make cutting easier.

How to install an undermount sink in a countertop - step-by-step instructions

Here we will give general principle work, it doesn’t matter whether a round sink is installed in a countertop or a sink of any other shape.

How to install a built-in sink into a countertop - step-by-step diagram

Step 1: Making a Template

First, you should create a cardboard template or draw it directly on the countertop using the sink itself. If you are lucky, then you have a packaging template, you just need to cut it along the indicated contour. If you don’t have it, take clean cardboard, place the sink on it upside down, trace the outline with a pencil, and cut it out. When it is impossible to get either one or the other, then get ready to use the sink itself, turn it upside down, place it on the countertop, and we will trace the outline.

Step 2: Choosing a place for washing

Need to find optimal place for location. To do this, evaluate where you will have the faucet, on the sink or next to the countertop itself, how the pipes will fit, whether it will be necessary to trim the edge of the countertop before final installation. Try not to place the sink close to the edge, make an indentation of at least 6 cm, so as not to accidentally break off these thin places. Also look under the countertop, there will also be other elements of the furniture block, possibly load-bearing ones, it will be impossible to cut on them, everything else can also be cut if the sink does not fit.

Step 3: Marking the countertop

Let's say you have a template. To mark the tabletop, you need to attach it to the surface with something to ensure immobility, and trace it. We will cut along this line in the future. If you have a factory template, then the required sizes the boundaries of the sink, you can immediately cut along them. If you use cardboard or the sink itself, then the outlined outer contour is not the cut line, because the bowl of the sink is inserted, and not its outline; it is the outline of the bowl that we need to calculate and mark. To do this, measure on the sink itself the distance from the outer edge to the connectors or mounting lugs, deviate this distance from the outline drawn on the template, draw a new outline, this time internal. Cut it out, attach it to the tabletop and trace it with a pencil. If you draw directly on the tabletop, without a template, then the essence does not change. The marking is ready.

Step 4: Cutting out the outline

Some people don’t draw on the tabletop, but attach cardboard and saw on it, but this one is extremely inconvenient; our advice is to still draw the drawing with a pencil. We have to cut a hole along the marked contour, but how to avoid chips on the edges of the tabletop? To do this, cover the surface along the line masking tape, it can then be easily removed. We make a hole somewhere in the outline, better with a drill, but so that it ends up on the inside of the line and then goes away along with the cut piece of the tabletop. We insert the jigsaw blade into this hole and move along the outlined line. This should be done slowly so as not to create an increased load on the file, which can then bend and deviate from the course.

Step 5: Process the cut

It is best to clean the resulting cut a little, blow it out and coat it thoroughly with silicone.. This way the cut will not be subject to the harmful effects of moisture. If there are any other internal elements of your kitchen cabinet in the path of the bowl, you will have to mark and trim them too, also treating them with silicone. If you use a factory template, even the marking of the internal area is provided in it, otherwise you will have to get rid of it, just don’t try to act “by eye”.

Step 6: Trying on additional equipment

If you have a new kitchen unit, you will need to do these operations before the final installation of the sink. Namely: assemble and try on the siphon and pipes, make the necessary holes in the cabinet for water supply and sewerage drainage, and trim some hoses. For all this, use the same jigsaw, and for round holes you can take a wood crown. All pipes are now being laid. Next, install the mixer if it is located on the countertop, or mark and drill a hole on the sink itself if it will be located on it.

Step 7: Installing the Sink

First you need to equip the sink with the sealing tape that comes with the kit. It is attached almost along the edge, but leaves room for silicone, sometimes there is even a special groove there. The fasteners are put on, but not firmly fixed; they will then need to be tightened according to the connector under the sink. We fix the faucet, if it is provided on the sink, and now we apply silicone into the groove along the edge and insert the sink into the opening, after bending the fasteners. Move the structure a little so that it fits well and as tightly as possible along the contour, climb under the sink and tighten the fastenings thoroughly. Wipe any exposed sealant around the perimeter before it dries and wait for it to cure. Use it to process any gaps, if any happen somewhere.
