How to start gluing non-woven wallpaper. How to glue non-woven wallpaper - step by step instructions. What to look for when choosing wide wallpapers

Non-woven wallpaper is a beautiful finishing material. Their use allows you to hide minor surface defects in rooms of various purposes. The created decorative coating has many advantages, and wallpapering for painting allows you to repeatedly update the appearance of the interior. The material can be selected for any design project. In order for the decor to last for a long time, you need not only to know how to glue non-woven wallpaper correctly, but also to pre-select high-quality products. An example of the harmonious design of a room with the help is presented in the photo below.

Non-woven wallpaper: pros and cons

Paper, non-woven - these are the most common types. The latter are divided into 3 following groups: completely from non-woven fabric or based on it, canvases for painting. Painted products have the lowest price compared to the first two types.

Non-woven photo wallpapers on the wall look great.

Products are available in a wide range and have excellent performance characteristics. The windows of building stores are full of an abundance of colors, patterns and drawings. One of the stands is shown in the photo below.

Produce wallpaper 100 and 60 cm wide. When using the former, fewer joints are formed, which is preferable for the overall appearance. The instructions on the packages often describe the technology for pasting non-woven wallpaper in this series.

Pasting non-woven wallpaper allows you to create a coating that has a number of advantages. Minor flaws do not affect the prevalence of the material. Its pros and cons are discussed in the table below.

AdvantagesFlaws
1 fabrics do not fade over time, do not burn, durable, wear-resistanthigher cost than paper and vinyl counterparts
2 Adhesive strips are easy to remove for subsequent repairsaccumulate dust over time, get dirty
3 a wide variety of patterns, patterns, colors, shades, textures allows you to implement a variety of design solutions in practicesome varieties are not breathable
4 canvases allow you to hide the defects of the walls pasted over with them, they can be washed during cleaning

The rules for pasting non-woven wallpaper do not contain any hard-to-implement recommendations.

The advantages of the material are undeniable. In order to achieve the maximum possible service life of the decorative coating, excellent interior design, it is necessary not only to know how to properly glue non-woven wallpaper, but also to select them for specific rooms. The instructions for pasting on the label contain all the necessary information for working with the selected material.

Applied pasting tools

Pasting non-woven wallpaper is carried out using a certain set of tools and devices. No special devices are required to be used. For pasting walls with non-woven wallpaper, you should prepare:

  • scissors, knife;
  • pencil, tape measure, ruler;
  • a plastic spatula for smoothing wallpaper on the wall and a metal one to cover up surface imperfections ;
  • roller with rubber nozzle, extension handle;
  • brush;
  • containers for glue and water;
  • building or laser level (you can plumb);
  • rags, soft sponge.

The photo above shows the tools needed to glue the canvas.

You will also need a ladder or other device for working under the ceiling. To prepare the walls for non-woven wallpaper, you may need a perforator and a hammer to dismantle the outer layers of plaster with defects.

It is better to assemble the tool in advance so as not to be distracted while working on trifles. To cut fragments from the roll and apply glue to strips 100 or 60 cm wide, you can use a special table .

Preparation of wall and wallpaper surfaces

Before gluing non-woven meter-long wallpaper, or 60 cm strips, the surface of the walls and the canvases themselves should be prepared. The duration of work at this stage depends on the condition of the base and the type of old finish. The preparation of the walls for gluing is carried out in the following order:

  • remove old decorative layers completely (wallpaper, paint) or only exfoliated areas (for plaster);
  • with significant irregularities, the entire work area is plastered;
  • if there are small cracks, cavities, potholes, then only they are sealed with putty;
  • protruding fragments are knocked down with a hammer or a perforator, and metal ones are cut off with a grinder;
  • after drying, the coating is polished to the required state;
  • cover the working base with a deep penetration primer, which improves the adhesion of the contacting surfaces.

Old wallpaper is removed with a metal spatula, soaking with water if necessary. It is also recommended to clean the base from paint.

Before the non-woven wallpaper is glued, the primer composition is expected to dry completely.

  • measure the perimeter of the room and the height of the walls;
  • multiplying these 2 parameters, get the area (S) of the surfaces;
  • dividing it into S rolls of 100 or 60 cm of wallpaper, they get the required amount of material;
  • the number of stripes can be calculated by dividing the perimeter of the room by their width;
  • by dividing the length of 1 roll by the height of the room, the number of fragments into which it can be cut is obtained;
  • dividing the total number of strips required for the room by the one obtained from one, the amount of working material is calculated.

The standard length of a roll is 10 m, so the area of meter-long ones is 10 sq.m., and products with a width of 60 cm - 6 sq.m.

It should be borne in mind that material should be purchased with a margin, because when wallpaper is glued in the corners or with a pattern (pattern), their consumption increases. Also, before gluing, fragments are cut off from the rolls (based on the height of the ceiling) with a margin of 10 cm. It is required to purchase material approximately 20% more than was calculated.

Before properly gluing non-woven wallpaper, it is recommended to cut them into pieces of the desired length. This is done like this:

  • measure the height of the ceiling at several points;
  • if there is no pattern on the material, then cut off the strips with a margin of about 10 cm;
  • if there is a drawing: they cover the floor, adjust the fragments and number them sequentially.

After the considered manipulations, the walls and wallpaper are prepared, you can start pasting the rooms. The base must be processed before gluing meter-long wallpaper. This is one of the keys to getting a quality result.

The adhesive composition must be prepared in advance before gluing. This is done in the following way:

  • clean water is poured into the container in the amount indicated in the instructions on the adhesive package;
  • then, slowly, pour out the adhesive powder, intensively mixing the solution;
  • 10 minutes, let the composition brew and re-stir, kneading the remaining lumps.

It is necessary to use specially designed for non-woven fabrics. Some types of adhesives are shown in the photo below.

The packages contain breeding instructions. For different compositions, they may contain some nuances of its preparation for work, therefore, when purchasing previously unused glue, you should study the instructions for it.

It may also contain recommendations for applying the composition: only on the strips or the wall, or simultaneously on both surfaces. Often applied only to the base. At the same time, especially carefully at the outer and inner corners, so as not to accidentally miss even small areas.

The use of special high quality adhesives allows you to securely stick a regular canvas and photo wallpaper on the wall. As a result, they will last for many years. The adhesive itself has good adhesion, allowing it to be used on many types of surfaces. The composition does not leave stains and in a diluted state in a closed container can be stored for up to 10 days.

Sticking technology

They proceed directly after preliminary preparation of tools, wall surfaces and cutting strips of the desired length. You can do all the work yourself. But it is better when there is an assistant, because it is more convenient both to glue wide strips and to work on a stepladder. The process itself moves faster in this case.

When sticking non-woven wallpaper in the corners and throughout the room, windows should be tightly closed to avoid drafts. It is better to work during daylight hours to be able to turn off the electricity.

The technology for gluing non-woven wallpaper consists of the following sequence of actions:

  • retreating slightly from the corner, draw a vertical line with a pencil along the level, which will be a guide for the first strip;
  • lubricate the section of the wall under the fragment with prepared glue;
  • lean the strip and adjust its location along the marked line;
  • moving from top to bottom, smooth the fragment with a roller or plastic spatula to level it and squeeze out air bubbles;
  • wipe the extruded glue with a damp cloth;
  • extra centimeters are cut off from below and from above;
  • butt joint glue the second strip so that the seam is not visible, at the same time there is no overlap;
  • similarly paste over the entire room.

Along the ceiling plinth, cut off the excess from the glued strip as shown in the photo below. The main thing is that the knife is sharp and does not pull the canvas.

Features of gluing are that the created decorative coating must dry at a constant temperature.

Glue the wallpaper in the inner and outer corners, smoothing it especially well and leveling it with a plastic spatula to squeeze out all the air and avoid wrinkles and voids.

The above technology shows meter-long wallpapers and fragments of a different width. There is nothing difficult. Sticking wallpaper with your own hands is not difficult. The main thing is to consistently and correctly perform all actions. It is inconvenient to work with meter-long wallpaper alone. Better to have a partner. In the considered way, you can both glue walls and ceilings.

Taping corners and awkward areas

Hard-to-reach places and corners require special attention when working. The first includes areas behind radiators and heating pipes, areas with switches and sockets. The work will require a power outage for your own safety.

Before gluing wallpaper on sockets and switches, remove covers from them. After smearing the walls and applying strips. Holes are carefully cut out at the locations of the boxes. After fixing the cover, mount the covers back.

The corners are pasted over with non-woven wallpaper so that up to 3 cm of the strip goes onto the adjacent wall. This makes it possible to hide irregularities.

Glue wallpaper in the corners in 2 ways:

  • monophonic types of products are combined with a slight overlap, after which they are cut along the corner with a sharp knife, removing excess;
  • pasting the corners with wallpaper containing drawings is performed with an overlap of several centimeters (2-3), which hides the unevenness.

The technology of pasting ceilings is similar to the design of walls with wallpaper. It is recommended to glue the strips so that the lighting from the window falls along them. This will hide the seams between the fragments.

To make it less difficult, before gluing the corners, it is better to level them with putty. The selection of the right combination of wallpapers, together with their high-quality gluing, leads to an excellent result.

The photo below shows an example of a beautiful, stylish design of the room.

A wide variety of non-woven fabrics allows you to perfectly decorate the interior. The material is highly practical. Working with him is not particularly difficult. A small problem can only arise with how to glue non-woven wallpaper in the corners. This is a consequence of the fact that they are almost always not even enough.

The technology of gluing walls and corners is shown in the next video.

A big plus is that all the work can be done by hand, without involving specialists. The presence of an assistant is desirable, and when pasting ceilings, it is simply necessary. Compliance with technology and proper preparation of the walls allow you to get a quality result.

You can update the interior easily and quickly. Sometimes all you need to do is re-paste the wallpaper. Wallpapers are now sold in a wide variety of types of coatings and types of bases.

What is non-woven wallpaper

Recently, non-woven wallpaper has been very popular. They have different types of coverage, with varying degrees of relief. They are also washable and therefore suitable for almost all rooms. The undoubted plus is that sticking non-woven wallpaper with your own hands is available even to a beginner in repair matters.

An important feature of these wallpapers is the non-woven base. Since this base is very plastic, this wallpaper can be easily glued to the wall. It is also easy to adjust their placement on the wall. Glue for non-woven wallpaper is applied directly to the wall, which greatly facilitates the process of gluing, because. this is much easier and faster to do, especially with a roller.

Preparatory processes

Smooth walls and even corners

You need to start wallpapering after the walls are leveled, puttied and a baguette is glued under the ceiling. It is very important to check the condition of the corners. It is the corners that are quite strongly curved. A slight unevenness or slope of one wall on the wall itself is not so visible. But when two walls meet, and even with varying degrees of inclination and tuberosity, it turns out not quite a beautiful “perspective”. That is, subsequently, a very ugly corner can turn out, which will ruin all the work. At the same time, it can take a lot of time and effort to stick a clumsy corner, but the result will still be unhappy. Therefore, it is important to correctly assess the condition of the corners and, possibly, contact a specialist, because. even corners are the lot of masters. Of course, if the corner is permanently closed by a closet or these are the back corners in a narrow room that are practically not visible, then you don’t have to worry about them much. But if it is an open corner in a conspicuous place, then it must be treated carefully and its defects corrected as much as possible before wallpapering.

Wall primer

Before wallpapering, the wall must be primed with a deep penetration primer and allowed to dry for the right time (indicated in the instructions for the primer, usually 1-2 days).

If you have just removed the old wallpaper and the wall is in good condition, then you can probably skip this step. It is important that the wall has a uniform strong coating, does not “dust” and has the same “absorbency” (degree of moisture absorption). In this case, you can independently decide whether the wall needs to be primed now. But experts recommend that the walls be primed before wallpapering.

If the walls are uneven, they need to be puttied. Read more.

Non-woven wallpaper is glued end-to-end and it doesn't matter how they are glued - from the window or to the window. The main thing is to choose the correct order of gluing so that it would be convenient to glue and have the optimal cutting of the wallpaper.

It is better to start from the corner or from the doorway in order to get a strictly vertical front page.

For proper gluing of canvases, you need to make markings on the wall in the form of a vertical line. It is desirable to draw a vertical line in such a way that the edge (joint) of the wallpaper does not pass along the line, but with an indent of 2-5 mm, so that the line does not fall into the seam. You should also try to draw a neat line, you can make it in the form of strokes. It is better to use a pencil that is harder and well sharpened.

If the wallpaper is without a selection of a pattern or is monophonic, then trimming the wallpaper in height can be done in the course of gluing. If a selection of a picture is required, then it is better to cut the wallpaper into canvases in advance.

You need to pay attention to the fact that trimming the top of the wallpaper under the baguette is done immediately after the sticker of each canvas, and not after the completion of gluing the entire wall or even the room. You need to cut off the top while the glue has not yet hardened, then you can get a smooth edge that is ideal for a baguette.

Step by step instructions for sticking non-woven wallpaper

Step 1. Preliminary preparation. Before starting work, you need to carefully examine the wall so that there are no bumps, greasy spots on it, which can then appear through the wallpaper. Sometimes it is better to wipe the wall with a damp cloth to remove dust from it. Sockets, switches, cornices and everything that can interfere with work are removed from the wall. In order to prevent glue from getting inside the socket, it can be carefully sealed with masking tape. So, how to glue non-woven wallpaper? Read on.

We remove sockets and switches from the wall

Step 2. Applying the first layer of glue. Glue is diluted with clean water in accordance with the instructions. The adhesive is applied to the wall with a roller. It must be well rolled out on the wall so that the adhesive layer is uniform everywhere and of the same thickness.

The glue should dry and soak into the wall. The time is indicated in the instructions, approximately it can be 3 hours.

Step 3. Preparation of cloths for gluing. We measure the height of the wall from the floor to the baguette and set aside the desired length of the canvas on the wallpaper. The height of the canvas should correspond to the measured height of the wall plus 1.5-3 cm of margin to correct irregularities under the ceiling and along the floor. The margin depends on the size of the irregularities. If the level of the ceiling and floor is horizontal, then the margin can be made only 1.5 cm for trimming under the baguette.

Measuring the height of the wall

If the wallpaper is with a pattern (rapport), but it is necessary to select a pattern and cut the required number of canvases. On the reverse side of pre-prepared canvases, it is recommended to apply special marks indicating the top of the canvas. Apply the marks carefully with a thin pencil so that they do not show through and become visible after the sticker, because. non-woven wallpaper is thin and on light wallpaper, inscriptions made with a pen or a bold pencil can appear.

In order to get an even cut at a right angle to the ends of the wallpaper, the panel is bent and aligned along the edge line.

Align the panel along the edge of the roll

Then it is carried out along the edge of the inflection with a spatula, so that a stable, clear bend line is obtained.

Smoothing the cut line with a spatula

Cut along the formed line with a metal spatula or an ordinary knife.

Cut the wallpaper with a spatula

It is not advisable to use a sharp clerical knife here, because. he can "wiggle". Of course, you can cut with ordinary scissors, but the cut will not be very even and it is not so convenient. Experts recommend cutting with a knife or spatula.

Step 4. Marking on the wall. We determine the place where you want to start gluing the wallpaper. It is best to start from a corner or doorway.

Measuring the width of the canvas

We measure the width of the canvas and put it on the wall, put a notch.

We transfer the width of the roll to the wall

Then, using a level or plumb line, we draw a vertical line.

Draw a vertical line

Step 5. Preparing glue for wallpapering and applying a second layer to the wall. The amount of glue should correspond to the area of the wall. If the area is large, then it is better to prepare the glue in a smaller amount, because. If you do not have time to do everything at once, then there will be an extra one. A small amount of excess glue can be poured into a jar and covered with a plastic lid. But this way you can leave the glue if the work continues the next day. And if in a week, then you need to make a new portion.

Apply glue to the wall with a roller

Using a roller, glue is applied to the wall within the area under one canvas. The glue is carefully rolled out so that it is evenly distributed. In hard-to-reach places, glue is applied with a brush.

Under the baguette, carefully apply glue with a brush

You also need to carefully brush the places under the baguette with a brush, at the bottom near the floor and along the edge of the already pasted canvas. Pay special attention to the corners, they must be well smeared with glue so that the wallpaper does not peel off later.

Thoroughly coat the corners

Step 6. Sticker of the first panel. The canvas is taken by the upper edge and lightly applied to the wall without pressing. We impose the canvas with a small approach of about 1.5 cm on the baguette.

First of all, you need to make sure that the edge of the canvas coincides with the vertical line and at the same time direct the top of the canvas horizontally along the baguette. The cloth should be clearly set along a vertical line.

We check the verticality along the entire length and at the very bottom.

After making sure that the vertical matches, the wallpaper is pressed against the wall and smoothing movements begin to glue them. You can smooth the wallpaper with a special wallpaper spatula or a rubber roller.

Smoothing the wallpaper with a rubber roller

The direction of movement with a spatula is first up, then up and to the sides. Somewhere from eye level, we begin to smooth the canvas down and from the middle of the canvas down, as it were, diagonally. Then from the middle and to the sides. The movements are shaped like a Christmas tree.

Smoothing the wallpaper with a spatula

If the bottom of the canvas moved away from the vertical line, then the wallpaper easily rises and aligns along the line.

Warped wallpaper can be lifted and corrected their position

Again they are smoothed with movements, first down, and then down and to the sides. In the same way, you can adjust the placement of the upper part of the canvas.

Step 7. Displacement of air bubbles. After the canvas is in place and smoothed out, there are still a lot of air bubbles. These bubbles are “expelled” from under the cloth with the same smoothing movements: first up, then down and to the sides. The presence of bubbles is controlled by running a hand over the surface.

We expel air bubbles with a wallpaper spatula

Step 8. Trimming the top edge of the panel. Now you need to cut the top of the panel under the baguette. With an obtuse angle of the wallpaper spatula, we draw under the baguette several times, trying to draw a good line of the joint.

The wallpaper must be carefully “crushed” under the baguette to get a clear line. This is necessary so that there is no glue left at the junction, which creates thickness, and after the final trimming and smoothing the edge to the wall, because of this thickness, the edge may not be even or even lagging behind the baguette.

Carefully press the wallpaper under the baguette

You need to cut off an extra piece of wallpaper with a metal spatula and a sharp clerical knife. The spatula is applied to the cut line, once again pressed well against the baguette.

You need to pay attention to the fact that the spatula should, as it were, lie on the wall, it does not need to be placed at an angle. The cut should go along the very edge of the baguette at the place where it adjoins the wall, and not along the wall or “into the corner”. Then you get a beautiful adjoining of the wallpaper to the baguette without gaps.

So you can not keep when cutting. If you cut at an angle, you can get a gap between the wallpaper and the baguette

We apply a spatula and make a cut with a knife, leading the knife along the spatula. Here, too, there are subtleties. The first subtlety: the knife should be held as parallel as possible with respect to the spatula, and not at an angle to it (you need to cut along the baguette). Second: the knife is kept continuously, without interruption, until the entire cut is made, otherwise notches will appear. To do this, the knife is not brought to the very end of the spatula, the movement is stopped (the knife is not torn off) and the spatula is smoothly moved to the next position. The spatula with light pressure is again, as it were, “crushed” under the baguette and after that we again continue to cut with a knife.

Correct cutting position

The cut tape is removed, and the upper edge is carefully pressed against the wall. The remains of glue from the baguette and wallpaper are washed off with water using a sponge (the sponge is well squeezed out).

Rinse off residual adhesive with clean water using a sponge.

Step 9. Gluing the next canvas. The next canvas is glued similarly to the first. Only here the edge of the already glued panel will serve as the main reference point.

Glue is applied to the wall with a strip equal to the width of the dense or slightly wider. If the wallpaper is with a moisture-resistant vinyl coating, then you don’t have to worry if the glue gets on the edge of the already pasted wallpaper. it can then be easily washed off with water using a sponge. It is important to immediately glue the place of the seam well with glue so that the wallpaper does not lag behind later.

When laying a new canvas, we focus on a vertical seam

The panel is superimposed with a slight approach to the baguette and is immediately set vertically along the seam. If the wallpaper is with a selection of a pattern, then the pattern is displayed and the rapport docking is carefully checked.

We expose the drawing

Then the panel is smoothed and air bubbles are expelled as already described above. The seam joint is carefully checked.

Checking and correcting seams

Then the seam is carefully pressed down and smoothed out with an obtuse angle of the spatula or a special small rubber roller.

Smooth out the seam with a roller

Step 10. Pasting non-woven wallpaper in the corners. Consider the features of wallpapering in the corner. Wallpaper in the corner can be glued only on one wall, cutting out the panel of the desired width, or with the transition from one wall to another. But, in the case of gluing on two walls at once, the angle must be even and, most importantly, vertical. In this case, the wallpaper is carefully smoothed to the walls and the corner will turn out neat. But, if the angle is far from perfect, then with a large “toe-in” between the walls, it may turn out that the second edge of the canvas is not vertical, but oblique. In some cases, for example, if the corner is concave inside the wall, it can turn out to be completely ugly. Above and below there will be, as it were, extra wallpapers that will form an “accordion”, and in the center the wallpaper will be tight, which means that they will soon fall behind the wall and “swell up”. Therefore, for gluing not ideal corners, it is better to cut the panel and glue it to each wall separately.

There should not be large gaps between the spatula and the wall.

The procedure for gluing the canvas itself is the same as described in Steps 5-9. You just need to carefully coat the corner with glue. If the walls are bumpy and when applying a spatula, sufficiently large gaps are visible, then on one wall the wallpaper can be pasted with a slight overlap (1.5 cm) on the other. This will be the bottom panel.

Step 11. Trimming the wallpaper in the corner. After both wallpapers are pasted on the walls of the corner, on one of the canvases you need to cut off the extra pieces of wallpaper (they just form on bumps). To do this, use the same method of trimming with a spatula and a clerical knife, which is described in Step 8. Only the spatula is now set vertically along the corner again "lying" on the wall.

The wallpaper must be carefully pressed into the corner

Before you start trimming, you need to press the wallpaper very well against the wall in the corner. Moreover, both the first (lower) canvas and the upper one should be carefully pressed. With a plastic spatula, we draw several times along the corner, pressing the wallpaper there and pressing it against the wall.

Pressing the wallpaper into the corner

With a metal spatula, as it were, we "press" the corner. Sliding the blade of the knife along the spatula, carefully cut the extra pieces on the top sheet. You need to cut parallel to the spatula, not "in the corner." We do not tear off the knife during cutting, moving the spatula from time to time, we lead along it with a knife. Not reaching the very bottom of the corner about 10 cm, we tear off the knife. At the very bottom, we cut the last 7-10 cm from the bottom up.

Moving the spatula along the corner cut off the excess wallpaper

When trimming a corner panel for a baguette, you should use the following advice. A metal spatula must be installed not reaching the corner between the walls for a short distance, approximately 3-5 cm. Otherwise, burying itself in a corner, the spatula can make a hole in the wallpaper. The unfinished top is easily trimmed with sharp scissors. To do this, the upper corner of the wallpaper is torn off, the corner is cut off and the wallpaper is glued back into place.

Cut corners with scissors

Replace sockets and switches.

The question of how to glue non-woven wallpaper worries many who have chosen this practical and high-quality material. Its main feature is a thickened structure, thanks to which it is possible to successfully hide minor wall defects. The non-woven coating is wear-resistant, moisture-resistant, light-resistant, maintenance-free and has an original embossed surface. If you want to change the interior design, such a coating can be repeatedly painted with dispersion or acrylic dyes. The very process of pasting the walls is simple and does not take much time, you just need to familiarize yourself with some secrets of working with wallpaper.

Sticking non-woven wallpaper with your own hands has some features. To know how to glue non-woven wallpaper correctly, we advise you to familiarize yourself with the following recommendations to avoid mistakes during work:

  • before starting work, be sure to read the instructions from the manufacturer attached to the rolls and to the packaging of the adhesive mixture;
  • Before gluing the canvas, prepare the surface of the walls. Proceed to gluing only after the primer has completely dried;
  • pay close attention to gluing the first workpiece - the quality of the entire work directly depends on this;
  • the glued sheet should be leveled with a rubber spatula (if the surface of the wallpaper is smooth) or a wallpaper roller (if the canvas has a textured surface);
  • each next sheet must be glued without overlap - strictly end-to-end.
    If this is not possible, for example, when gluing the canvas in the corners, use the double cut method: by laying two sheets on top of each other by 5-6 cm, you need to make an even cut with a clerical knife at the junction, then carefully remove the excess. Thus, the corners will be perfect;
  • the joints of the sheets (especially the corners) should be carefully ironed with a spatula or roller, removing excess glue to the side free from wallpaper;
  • to remove excess glue, use a damp sponge, carefully wipe the seams in the corners, do not worry about the condition of the canvas - moisture will not damage it.

The preparation and marking of the walls is an important point that should be given special attention before gluing non-woven wallpaper. You should also cut the sheets correctly and choose the appropriate composition for gluing them.

Preparatory work

Non-woven wallpaper can be pasted over any surface. If you plan to paint the wallpaper in the future, you should take care in advance that the walls have a uniform color that does not differ much from the color of the selected paint, since non-woven is a thin material and the color of the base may be noticeable in the future.

VIDEO:

The walls should be pre-cleaned (remove the old coating) and eliminate existing defects. Then it is necessary to carefully treat the surface with a primer, it is better to apply a deep penetration primer - this will increase the adhesion of the adhesive. After the final drying of the primer, you can proceed to the marking of the walls. It is recommended to start pasting meter-long wallpapers from the corner - use a level to apply vertical lines to the walls at a distance of 1 m from each other, this will avoid irregularities and shortcomings in the work.

The next step is to prepare the canvas. If you have chosen a solid material, there are no problems with cutting. If you plan to glue a canvas with a pattern, make sure that it matches, for this you will have to periodically shift the next sheet up or down. Be sure to leave a margin of height of 5-7 cm when cutting - an allowance for the ceiling, cut off the excess part with a clerical knife after complete drying.

Sheet cutting must be carried out on a clean surface, rolling the roll face down. Having measured the desired length of the workpiece (taking into account the margin), you should make a notch, evenly bend the sheet (make sure that the edges of the lower part of the sheet coincide with the edges of the bent part) and cut it along the fold line. The next workpiece must be rolled out in the same way and before cutting, check the fit of the pattern. Further work is performed in a similar sequence.

After preparing the walls and the canvas, you can begin to solve the following question - how to glue non-woven wallpaper correctly? An important point is the choice of a suitable glue, the quality of the final work depends on it.

Choosing glue

For pasting walls with non-woven wallpaper, you should use a certain adhesive composition, which can be purchased at a specialized store selling building and finishing materials.

Before preparing the adhesive mixture, carefully read the instructions for the sticker process technology that is attached to the wallpaper - some manufacturers recommend applying glue not only to the walls, but also to the canvas itself.

It has a number of advantages:

  • does not contain toxic substances and is absolutely safe for human health;
  • has excellent adhesive properties, allowing the mixture to be applied to any surface;
  • convenient to use;
  • does not leave stains;
  • has a long shelf life in a closed container (up to 10 days).

The process of making the adhesive mixture itself is not complicated - in the amount of water indicated according to the instructions, the powder should be diluted, constantly stirring until the mass thickens.

How to glue meter non-woven wallpaper

Sticking non-woven wallpaper with your own hands is not a laborious process, but if you have chosen a meter-long canvas, you should take into account a few nuances. Many prefer exactly meter rolls, since this greatly facilitates the pasting process, there are fewer joints and less material consumption.

  1. The main task is to carefully prepare the walls - their surface should be even and smooth. The walls should be pre-treated with putty and primer - this will level the walls and improve the ability to bond the adhesive mixture to their surface.
  2. With improper cutting of meter-long wallpaper, you can often encounter a shortage of the length of the last sheet. In order to avoid this situation and save material, before sticking the sheets, we recommend that you first stick the ceiling plinth to a clean wall, avoiding the need to set aside allowances (if such a finish is planned in advance).
  3. If you are sure that the ceilings are even, it is enough to leave a 2-3 cm margin when cutting sheets. If the ceilings are uneven, you should leave more margin - up to 10 cm.
  4. You should not start gluing meters strictly from the corner, draw an orientation line in advance, stepping back a little from the edge of the wall - this will avoid distortion of the pattern if the corners of the room are uneven.
  5. Smoothing the canvas glued to the wall should start from the top, gradually moving towards the center and leveling the edges of the sheet.
  6. The edges of each subsequent sheet should be applied as close as possible to the adjacent canvas, aligning the seams and tracking the pattern if you chose a non-monochrome coating.

Before starting work, be sure to study all the recommendations and prepare the necessary materials - this will greatly facilitate and speed up the process.

How to glue wallpaper in hard-to-reach places

The question of how to glue non-woven wallpaper in hard-to-reach places, especially in the corners, is important. Difficult places also include areas with sockets, switches, and near batteries. When sticking the canvas near sockets and switches, you must first de-energize them and unscrew the protective boxes. Thoroughly coat the wall with glue, attach the sheet, and only after the glue has dried, make a cut of the required size, remove excess wallpaper and screw the boxes into place. When sticking the canvas near the batteries, carefully treat the edges of the sheet with adhesive. Corners require special attention. There are two options for successful wallpapering in the corners:

A. If you have chosen a plain canvas, you need to stick it, starting from the corner, then glue the next sheet on the adjacent wall, grabbing part of the glued canvas, and then evenly cut both canvases with a clerical knife, removing the excess.

B. If you prefer a canvas with a pattern, the sheet is also glued from the corner, and the overlap with the next canvas should be 2-3 cm - this will hide the flaw in case of an uneven corner.

Non-woven wallpaper can be of two types: with a pattern and for painting. Such products are able to easily mask the imperfections of the walls that remained after the repair work. Therefore, non-woven wallpaper is in great demand. You don't need any special skills to stick them.

You should be aware that the non-woven base is able to slide along the wall, and therefore it will be possible to paste over without outside help. If you choose wallpaper for painting, you can easily change the range of interior colors. In this case, the room will always seem fresh.

To date, large-width wallpapers are rarely used, but a large amount of this material can be found on sale. Such wallpapers have some advantages:

  • wide-width wallpapers can greatly simplify the gluing process;
  • in this case, there will be a minimum number of seams that spoil the appearance of the room.

Necessary preparatory work

In order for the gluing to be done qualitatively, you will need to perform some preparatory work. First of all, it is necessary to calculate with maximum accuracy the number of rolls of material that will be needed for pasting the room. To do this, you will need to measure the width and height of the room on each side separately. In the process of calculating the required number of rolls, you will need to add a few centimeters to the length of the canvas on each side in reserve. For clarity, you can draw a diagram on paper.

In the process of choosing non-woven wallpaper, you will need to pay attention to the batch number, which is indicated on the package. It should be the same on all rolls. If there is a drawing, it must also be identical.

In order for the wallpaper to fit correctly on the wall, you will need to prepare the room. The walls must be carefully aligned. This is especially important if you plan to stick wide wallpapers that will not lie correctly on uneven walls. If the surface is not leveled, then this will further affect the quality of the joints.

Sockets and switches will need to be removed. The wires will need to be insulated so that the adhesive mixture does not get inside the boxes. All walls will need to be carefully treated with a primer mixture, and then dried.

You will need to prepare the following items:

  1. Video clip. Will be used for edging.
  2. Film made of polyethylene.
  3. Short bristled brush.
  4. Plastic spatula.
  5. Container for adhesive mixture.
  6. roller.
  7. Roulette.
  8. Simple pencil.
  9. Level.
  10. Adhesive mixture for non-woven wallpaper.

Do-it-yourself non-woven wallpaper gluing technology

First of all, you need to mark the walls. Non-woven wallpaper has an excellent edge, butt-glued. Marking should start from the corner of the room. In these places, the canvas will be overlapped so that they can be processed correctly. If you plan to stick a material with a width of 1.06 m, then in all directions from the corner you will need to set aside 1 m.

Using a plumb line or building level and a simple pencil, you will need to mark a vertical line to the height of the builder. With a tape measure, it will be necessary to mark 1.06 m from the drawn line. Thus, it will be necessary to draw all the walls.

If there is no drawing, you will need to measure the height of the room with a tape measure in the place where the piece of wallpaper will be pasted, while adding another 10 cm. The roll is bent onto the rolled part so that the edges match. In this case, you will get an even fold. You will need to run your hand along the fold, and then cut it with a construction knife. In this case, you can use a new clerical knife. Thus, wallpaper is prepared for the entire room.

The canvases will need to be rolled into loose rolls so that the front side is inside. Thanks to the non-woven base, problems in this case should not arise.

Next, you need to dilute the adhesive mixture according to the instructions. It is allowed to use only adhesive solution for non-woven wallpaper. Water is poured into the prepared container, after which glue is poured out in a thin stream. In the process of preparing the mixture, it must be constantly stirred in order to exclude the formation of lumps that can interfere with the quality of sticking the wallpaper. The adhesive solution must stand for a while to swell. A plastic mesh can be installed in the container, which will remove excess glue.

The roller will need to be immersed in a container with a solution, and then run over the grid. Next, you need to spread glue on the wall for gluing one canvas. The panel must begin to be glued from the top.

You need to take hold of the extreme part of the canvas, and then attach it to the wall. The roll slowly descends, in the process you need to smooth the wallpaper from the middle to the edges with a brush. In this case, you can also use a plastic spatula, but all actions must be performed carefully, as the wallpaper may be damaged.

Glue wallpaper based on non-woven fabric so that they fit snugly against the wall. Bubbles and wrinkles are not allowed.

After gluing two sheets with a roller, you need to roll the seams of the material. The piece of wallpaper that remains below will need to be carefully cut off. This should be done after the wallpaper has dried. It is necessary to calculate everything so that the plinth installed later can cover the bottom of the wallpaper. A border of the required thickness can be installed at the top of the wall.

How to glue non-woven wallpaper on the corners

The first step is to prepare the corner of the room. This must be done even in the process of filling the walls. The corners are equipped with plastic fixtures that are attached to the putty on the walls. The entire product must dry completely, only after that it will be possible to start gluing non-woven wallpaper. In the process of gluing the corner, the wall and the plastic corner will need to be carefully coated with an adhesive mixture.

The canvases will be overlapped, it is not recommended to glue the whole panel at the corner. In most cases, the corners in the rooms are not ideal, and therefore defects may occur: the corners of the material will wrinkle, the strip will warp. To eliminate this, it is necessary to glue the corners correctly.

The canvas should be glued in such a way that a slight overlap is obtained on the wall, which is located nearby.

The next strip is glued on another wall, it is glued to the corner with a slight overlap. Further, this “tail” is cut off with a construction knife, you need to navigate along the vertical angle.

As a result, up to 2 cm of the panel from the adjacent wall will be glued under this canvas, the first canvas will rest against the corner with its edge.

Non-woven wallpaper is no longer a novelty in the construction market and has long occupied its niche in the list of high-quality finishing materials. These rolled products have a number of positive and negative qualities.

  • a dense base allows you to level small surface errors (pits, cracks);
  • the textured surface for painting makes it possible to experiment with color inside the same room;
  • this material has increased fire resistance;
  • the technology for pasting surfaces with non-woven wallpaper is simpler than the technology used for paper products;
  • almost all types of these products can be washed, including using special solutions;
  • the material is not subject to fading in the sun;
  • dismantling this material is easier than removing paper wallpaper.
  • the top layer of these products does not withstand gross damage;
  • there are many cheap materials of this type that do not meet the high requirements of environmental safety;
  • high price.

Surface preparation

Before you glue non-woven meter-long wallpaper with your own hands, you need to pay sufficient attention to preparing the base. This material can be glued to any surface (wooden, concrete, plastered), but only on a perfectly smooth wall can an even coating be achieved.

To prepare the surface for pasting, it is necessary to carry out the following work:

  1. the old coating should be removed;
  2. cracks, pits, delaminations - removed by leveling the surface with putty;
  3. it is desirable to carry out a general alignment of the wall with putty, and then wipe the irregularities with sandpaper;
  4. the leveled surface is covered with soil.

Thus, the walls are being consistently prepared for pasting in the living rooms, kitchen and hallway.

Is it possible to glue on old wallpaper

Methods for pasting surfaces with rolled materials vary. What is acceptable for paper products is unacceptable for non-woven material. So, gluing on old wallpaper is not recommended for non-woven products.

Usually, denser non-woven fabrics have a decent weight, which is why a weak base with paper may simply not withstand the load and fall off the wall. In addition, the darker colors of the old pasting, which are under light wallpaper, will shine through, changing the look of the material.

Tools and materials

To work with non-woven wallpaper, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • the wallpaper itself;
  • glue for sticking non-woven material;
  • laser level;
  • yardstick;
  • spatula 30-40 cm wide;
  • pencil;
  • pure matter;
  • container for diluting glue and for working with a roller;
  • roller with fur skin;
  • rubber roller or plastic spatula for straightening the web;
  • water container.

Wallpaper preparation

To prepare the working strip, it is necessary to measure the distance from the floor to the ceiling and increase it by 3-5 cm for a corrective margin. If you need to adjust the pattern, you can try on the second strip, placing it next to the first on the floor, and cut it to fit the height.

The canvas should be cut off with a sharp knife or spatula, having previously folded the sheet, combining the side surfaces of the lower and superimposed sheets.

Quantity calculation

If the wallpaper is plain and does not require adjustment according to the pattern, the found value will be correct, if the wallpaper is to be adjusted, it is recommended to increase the calculated value by 5% to purchase an insurance stock.

Glue preparation

To properly prepare the adhesive solution, you must carefully study the instructions on the package and do not change the recommended dosage. From the general rules, the following points can be briefly highlighted:

  • water should have a temperature of 20-25 ° C;
  • before pouring the powder into water, it is recommended to stir it in a container in such a way that a funnel is obtained, on the edge of which the dry contents of the package are gradually poured - this is how mixing occurs;
  • a homogeneous solution is left for the time specified in the instructions for complete dissolution, after which the glue can be used.

Which to choose

The main condition for selecting a suitable brand of glue is the marking on the package, which confirms that this glue can be used to work with non-woven products.

In addition, it is desirable to take into account the characteristics of the rolled material (density and structure), since different types of glue are used for different types of wallpaper. The most famous brands are: Metylan, Quelyd, Kleo, PUFAS.

Pasting instructions

For non-professional finishers who want to decide how to properly glue non-woven wallpaper, it is recommended to use the following step-by-step algorithm of actions:

  • To paste over the room start from the window. To glue the first sheet, which will serve as a vertical reference for all subsequent canvases, you need to mark up. To draw a vertical line at a distance of 1000 mm from the corner, it is advisable to use a laser level, which will allow you to maintain a strict perpendicular to the floor.

  • The prepared adhesive solution is applied with a roller to the wall, processing the surface required to place the canvas, with a small allowance to the large side.
  • The canvas is glued to the wall, focusing on the vertical mark. If everything is done correctly, subsequent sheets will fit perfectly.
  • Then you can apply glue to the wall with the expectation of two or three strips at once.
  • Each sheet must be carefully smoothed with a rubber roller or plastic rule, getting rid of bubbles, removing excess glue and adjusting the joints.

  • When marking the wallpaper along the length, leave a small allowance to align the top edge. The edge of the canvas at the junction with the ceiling or ceiling plinth is carefully folded and cut with a knife, using a wide spatula as a guide base.

  • The lower edge is cut with scissors or a knife, leaving a small distance to the floor, which will be covered with a fillet or baseboard.
  • If it is necessary to adjust the pattern, the marking of the wallpaper is performed with a large allowance for height.
  • It is advisable not to allow glue to get on the surface of the web, as low-quality and cheap solutions can leave yellowish spots.
  • Gluing corners is best done using overlap technology.

How to glue corners

It is not easy to qualitatively stick non-woven wallpaper in the corner, without some experience. The success of this procedure depends on the preliminary preparation of the base.

If, before pasting the room, the corner was leveled, there will be no special problems when sticking wallpaper end-to-end or when covering the corner with a whole canvas, in this place. As a corner equalizer, you can use plastic corners, which are installed at the time of preparing the base and then plastered.

It is more difficult to perform an even angle on a poorly prepared base. In this case, it is recommended to glue the corner with an overlap.

First, one strip is glued with the corner overlapping by two to three centimeters, then the strip is glued along the second wall, also with an overlap, after which it is necessary to make a vertical cut, pressing a ruler or a long spatula close to the corner. Excess strips are removed, and the seam is even.

What to do if the wallpaper bubbles

How to glue non-woven wallpaper with your own hands in such a way as to avoid the appearance of bubbles? A common mistake novice finishers make is a violation of the recommended dosage of glue. It is the improper preparation of the adhesive composition, as well as the high (more than 25 ° C) temperature in the room and the draft, that are the causes of the peeling of the wallpaper from the wall.

It is also important when gluing the canvases to carefully straighten and squeeze out air plugs, to avoid crooked joints. Compliance with these rules will avoid an annoying marriage at work.

When can I open windows after pasting

To avoid problems with the quality of gluing, you need to understand how much you can not ventilate the room after the work is completed. It takes at least a day to ensure a reliable adhesion of the adhesive and material, but for some types of wallpaper it may take up to 72 hours.

Premature ventilation will lead to uneven drying, which will lead to lagging of non-woven wallpaper, divergence of the joints of the strips and the formation of uneven edges at the ceiling and in the corners.

At what temperature to glue the wallpaper

Modern materials retain their quality characteristics at temperatures from 10 to 25°С, which allows you to perform work both in summer and in winter, when central heating performs the function of maintaining the optimum temperature in the apartment.

It is not recommended to stick wallpaper at lower or higher temperatures, as the work production technology will be violated, and the quality of gluing will not be guaranteed.

How long does it take for wallpaper to dry

How long non-woven wallpaper dries after gluing can be read in the instructions on the glue package. Usually this period is from 12 to 20 hours, but experienced finishers recommend keeping the room closed for a day. Only after this period it is permissible to ventilate the room.

By touching the palm of your hand, you can determine the state of the wallpaper. If humidity is felt, ventilation cannot be carried out, if the surface is dry and a day has passed after pasting, you can proceed to the following work.

What to do if the wallpaper shines through

Before gluing non-woven wallpaper on your own, it is recommended to check them by applying them to already prepared walls. In this way, it is possible to prevent translucence of a blemish on the wall, but it is better to carefully prepare the surface before starting work.

The base must be leveled with putty and cleaned with sandpaper, and for pasting choose denser wallpaper - in this case there will be no problems.
