Modern styles and trends in photography. Genres of photography. Main genres and types in photography: example

Today photography as an art is at the peak of its popularity. With the development of technology and the availability of information, photographing people and objects with a camera is filled with a completely new meaning. Just 2-3 decades ago, the services of a photographer were resorted to only on the most solemn occasions, and this type of photography was in maximum demand. And if in those days you allow yourself a real reflex camera Only a select few could, but today the majority of those who wish have the opportunity to self-realize with the help of photography. Genre photography is also gaining popularity, when a photographer sets himself the task of not only capturing current events, but also making each photograph artistically filled. After all, life itself throws up stories that you want to sing in monochrome or color: the touching fragility of a bride, the insecurity of a newborn, beauty native land, wisdom reflected in eyes surrounded by wrinkles, the play of sun rays on the plank floor...

It is probably impossible to say exactly how many types there are and Examples of the works of the best photographers often combine several directions, combining techniques inherent in completely different types shooting. And, nevertheless, among the whole variety of styles, several of the most popular can be identified.

Reportage

With the advent of new trends in the art of photography, the classics do not lose relevance. This type of photography, like reportage, will probably always be relevant. Photojournalists have always been and will be where the most fateful events take place, so that the entire planet can learn about them in a timely manner. Reportage photography, like journalism in general, can also be divided into subtypes, depending on the subject of photography.

The most common type of photography here is news photography, reflecting current events in the world. Among those who cover the news, military correspondents stand a little apart, because their work is full of dangers and risks, and the lens of their camera often includes things that not everyone can handle.

All subtypes have one thing in common - impartiality, atmosphere, and the need to maintain maximum objectivity.

Wedding

Once upon a time, a wedding photo shoot could also be classified as reportage photography. Today, this type of photography has been completely modernized. Modern newlyweds pay Special attention first - a wedding photo album. Often a whole team of professionals works on it. The task of a wedding photographer is to notice and reflect the entire depth of feelings that lies hidden in two hearts. Therefore, his frame often includes such little things as clenched fingers, fluttering eyelashes, excited glances... And how eloquent are the goosebumps on the skin!

A true professional will definitely notice everything important, while not forgetting the main thing. After all, under no circumstances should he miss the unique moments of signing the registration book, putting on rings, and the first marital kiss.

Children in the frame

It is not known exactly how many types and genres of photography there are, but children’s photo sets can easily be called one of the most popular. It would seem, what could be simpler? Brightly dressed models with funny curls do not need the services of make-up artists, costume designers and decorators. The charm of childhood just begs to be captured in the frame! And even professional models can envy the variety of emotions that only kids are capable of. However, this type of photography requires much more skill from the photographer than any other types and genres of photography. WITH clear examples cheeky childish posing or, conversely, a stubborn reluctance to pose, is probably familiar to everyone who has tried to capture their own child on camera at least once. Therefore, professionals often use various means to find common language with small models: they turn on suitable music, allow them to play with props, treat them with sweets, decorate the lens and camera funny faces and little animals. What can I say, even if the well-known supposedly flying bird was invented many years ago in order to attract children's attention to the lens!

But those who have managed to reach mutual understanding with children understand perfectly how grateful this audience can be. Children are beautiful in their spontaneity, interesting in themselves, so photographs of them - dirty, playing, disheveled, crying and laughing - often look like illustrations to good old fairy tales.

Love Story

New types of photography are also gaining popularity. An example of this is Love Story, love stories captured on film. Cute trinkets that have meaning for two lovers are often used as props: notes, plush toys, shells picked up on the beach, CDs with special songs...

Objects that have become common to two people, for example, paired jewelry or two straws stuck in one glass, help emphasize the mood.

Landscape photography

Such types of photographs as landscapes will never lose their relevance... The subject is set by nature itself, and the source of inspiration can be both the horizon of a tropical island and the familiar view from the balcony. Here, perhaps more than in any other genre, working with light is important - so that the sky does not lose depth, so that the bright rays of the sun do not create too sharp shadows, so that not a single detail escapes...

Subspecies landscape photography you can name shots from travels that will later take their place in the travel album, helping to preserve memories of inaccessible mountains, gentle seas, and distant shores.

Still life

Once upon a time this type of photography could almost be called educational. They resorted to it mainly to hone the skill of composing and working with shadows.

Today this species is extremely popular not only among photographers, but also among those who create hand-made masterpieces. Craftsmen strive to present their goods the best way, resorting to the help of professionals.

Fauna through the lens of a photographer

The friendship between man and animal has attracted the keen eye of a photographer for a long time. Animals often enjoy posing.

In addition, cute fluffy faces often penetrate other types and genres modern photography, for example in portrait photography. And if a few years ago 99% of the popularity belonged to cats, today in the works of masters you can often see such exotic things as snakes, iguanas, scorpions, owls.

Dogs also attract photographers. For example, the northern handsome huskies, Samoyeds and Malamutes, who have absolutely incredible facial expressions.

Thematic sets

Another the new kind photographs - thematic shooting. Here the photographer can show his talent from all sides. He can’t do without decorations and props. The idea is to create a series of photographs united by a common plot. Often it is based on a famous fairy tale, movie, or story. Models can try on absolutely incredible roles: the Mad Hatter and Alice, Vakula and Oksana, Snow White and the dwarves...

Thematic photography techniques often penetrate other types of photography: children's, wedding, portrait. An indicator of special skill here is one’s own vision, an unusual interpretation, and not a simple illustration of the plot.

Surrealism

Not so long ago, the types and genres of modern photography were replenished with a completely unusual direction. We are talking about surrealism. Many fans of this art call it not just photography, but the creation of new worlds. Among the craftsmen working in Russia today, Oleg Oprisko occupies a special place. He managed to create his own types of photographs. Examples of Oleg’s works allow you to see familiar things from an incredible, magical perspective.

No less famous is the photographer Katya Plotnikova, who also works in this genre. Incredible fairies and strange animals look at us from her works.

High and low key

These types of filming (photographs) are presented mainly in portrait and subject genres. Rather, high and low key can be called photography techniques, rather than types of shooting, but most experts consider them a special direction in the art of photography. When working in this genre, the master focuses on working with light and shadow. Shooting in low and high key is carried out in a special studio, equipped not only with lighting devices, but also with special reflective screens.

High key implies special color scheme picture. Its main tone is white, and the dark areas, in the language of professionals, are within the second level of light gray on the seven-level density scale.

Low key, on the contrary, celebrates deep black. Only that part of the image that carries the main semantic load remains highlighted to light gray.

Macro world

Such genres of photography (with photo examples), such as macro photography, can mislead the average person with their unusualness. Sometimes it is difficult to understand what is shown in the picture: the delta of a huge river or the circulatory system of a newborn, patches of ripening fields from a bird's eye view or a pattern on the wing of a moth?

For macro photography, special lenses with magnifying lenses are used. The skill of the photographer, who was able to discern the smallest things, allows the common man to see what is often hidden from his sight.

Astrophotography

The starry sky has always attracted people! It is not surprising that it often ends up in camera lenses. And unusual celestial phenomena, such as eclipses, arrivals of comets and asteroids, the special color of the moon and the incredible brightness of the Milky Way, certainly do not leave astrophotography lovers indifferent.

Nude

Some types of modern photography have their origins in ancient times. Speaking about shooting in the Nude style, one cannot help but recall the great artists of past centuries who glorified the natural beauty of the human body. IN in a broad sense The main subject of photography in this genre is the naked body. However, many masters often cover up the nakedness of models with the help of draperies and translucent veils, curtains, screens, thus leaving some kind of understatement and intrigue in the photo.

This genre is special. In it, like in no other, you need to feel the line between art and vulgarity.

Street photo

Speaking about what types of photography exist, it is worth mentioning another unusual genre. It's about street photo. This direction appeared quite a long time ago, more than a century ago. Ideologists of street photography call this genre the most sincere and reliable, and the work of a photographer here requires special skill. After all, it is intended only to monitor the life of the city, notice the most interesting and striking moments, and discover unusual images.

Street photography tells us not only about the characters, but also about their life in the environment. Everything is important here - buildings and trees, birds and trash cans, umbrellas over cafe tables, rushing taxis, street vendors...

Photographic art and its prospects

Contemporary art lives a special life, absorbing and reflecting all aspects of the surrounding life. Types and genres of photography are replenished every day with new directions and trends, complementing each other. The development of technology allows not only to get acquainted with creativity the best masters world, but also to use the achievements of science for their own creative needs. The production of photographic equipment, optics, lighting fixtures. A modern photographer has many programs for processing and editing images in his arsenal. All this significantly expands human capabilities and allows every photography enthusiast to find his own path in art.

The peculiarity of this direction in photography is that the main part of the reporting niche is occupied by professionals. The main goal of a photographer-reporter is to convey the mood and integrity of the entire event in one photograph.

Another goal of photojournalism is to tell the facts without the subjective opinion of the photographer. The viewer usually learns about events from reportage photographs. Underwater photography is one of the common hobbies of scuba divers. The narrow focus and unpopularity of this direction in photography is a consequence of the high cost of the hobby, as well as the high cost of photographic equipment for underwater photography. In addition, even if an amateur photographer has scuba gear and equipment, underwater photography is often complicated by the fact that it is difficult to see a good scene through an underwater mask.

Artistic photography

genres in photography

Fine art photography covers many subjects. An underwater photographer can create an artistic series, and a portrait artist can create an expressive black and white portrait, which only emphasizes the versatility of this direction in photography. The main requirement for photography that claims to be artistic is to have aesthetic value.

A few days ago, I was surprised to learn about a very talented photographer. His style is the so-called street photography (Street Photography), i.e. he walks the streets with a camera and asks various passers-by to pose for him. The photographs turn out simply fantastic, filled with the atmosphere and emotions of people. His name is Benoit Payet(yes, that’s how his last name is read in French).

At the moment, he has already achieved enormous success among photographers, his master classes around the world at a cost of several thousand dollars. But besides being an amazing photographer, he is also a genius processes photos. Processing is really on top level, which causes thousands of people around the world to try to replicate his technique. But no one has yet managed to do this, and he himself Benoit reveals the secrets of photo processing only to his students from master classes.

In this article I invite you to familiarize yourself with the works of the amazing Benoit Paille, and also consider it in more detail photo processing technique.

I present to your attention a small selection of photographs Benoit Payet, so that you can visually imagine what processing style we are talking ( click below to play slideshow)

For a detailed look at his portfolio, you can visit his page on deviantart or flickr.

I spent a long time looking through his works, studying the colors and style in general. I looked through many forums, blogs and sites where they tried to post action (actions) with the technique of processing it, questions were brought up for discussion, but nothing really useful was learned. Someone said “twist the sliders,” and someone even said that “he just has a cool camera,” and this was said by people who couldn’t even spell his last name correctly. I came across these options: Benoit Poll, Benoit Palle, Benoit Pell and so on. Of course, all this is a laugh and nothing more :)

I found the only sensible topic on the club.foto.ru forum, where there are already more 30+ pages discussing his technique processing And photos generally. From it I learned that Benoit uses the link Adobe Lightroom + Adobe Photoshop, i.e. converts from format RAW and the main processing of the photo is carried out in Photoshop. By the way, you can read about this technique in the article. Even to my great surprise was that he uses only two tools for photo processing, namely Levels And Color Balance. Time to process one photo - approx. 2 hours. In principle, it was not possible to find out anything more, except that the title photograph of this article was taken on Canon 5D Mark II with fixed lens Sigma 35mm f/1.4. Now let's move on to the main thing, to analyzing it photo processing style.

The Internet is full of photographs of his performance, but, unfortunately, all of them are post-processed, and Benoit Paille does not post his originals, thereby trying with all his might to keep the secret your photo processing. The only ones original photographs without processing, you can find it in his announcements for master classes, but they are all in terrible quality and you can’t make out much of them. Examples original photographs you can find it in any search engine by request BenoitPaillWorkshop.pdf.

Below I post those same photos ( with processing, which are in his pdf files) only in normal quality, so that you can better see the results post-processing Images. Based on them we will draw conclusions about him. color correction techniques And .

Now we have the opportunity to compare the originals of his photographs (albeit small) with already processed photographs in excellent quality. After analyzing the photographs, we can draw the following conclusions:

1. Muted tones, i.e. No bright colors , everything is in optimal proportion

2. High microcontrast. Required parts in sharpness, increased in the right places image contrast

3. The background less contrast than the subject of shooting, accordingly Benoit thereby places emphasis on the “model”

4. Fantastic light-shadow processing. Correct underlining shadows/lights

5. Photos in style surrealism, i.e. he achieves color grading that borders on the same level as “unrealistic”, but the line is so thin that it’s not noticeable

6. The effect is created “ film", i.e. the colors are a bit reminiscent of a movie screen from the 90s

7. The image doesn’t look like a photograph at all, it seems like it somehow resembles "picture", i.e. very high quality and unique.

This, one might say, was “washed by ear.” After all, no one can say exactly how and what should be processed in these photographs. The only way out is to try to repeat this treatment yourself, although Benoit Payet strongly recommends not to spend time on this, because... everyone has their own unique style and it's better to work on improving it than to copy someone else's. And in principle, I completely agree with him, but I still decided to try. All on the same forum club.photo.ru I found a photo ideal for processing in the style Benoit Paille and after about 30-40 minutes of fiddling around in Photoshop I got the following

This is just a trial treatment, but I’m sure that if we move further in this direction, we can quickly achieve something similar style(precisely similar, not identical, because this is simply impossible) Benoit Payet. I managed to achieve a similar result using four plugins, the chronology was as follows:

1. The initial processing that laid the “foundation” was using a plugin Alien Skin Exposure Color Film. The filter is called Slide film 100%.

3. To do beautiful blurry side yeah, I used the plugin Alien Skin Bokeh 2.

4. After that I used it again Color Efex Pro with filters Brilliance/Warmth And Photo Stylizer.

5. To achieve a slight surrealism and “picture” effect, I used a filter Glamor Glow And White Neutralizer in the same Color Efex Pro.

7. And finally, for more pronounced bokeh, I brightened it using a plugin Red Giant Software Knoll Light Factory.

Unfortunately, I didn't document which settings for which filter I exhibited it because I didn’t even intend to do such a detailed analysis of creativity Benoit Paille:) But keep in mind that I used local processing, i.e. imposed filters on individual parts of the image, rather than on the entire photo. The only thing I can offer you is a video clip, recorded by me personally in HD quality, where I gradually turn on Photoshop layers one after another so that you can see which plugin affected the image.

You can download the plugins that I listed above by name from any torrent, for example rutracker.org. I hope you found this article useful and informative.

if you need a more detailed lesson or file PSD with layers in style Benoit Paille processing You can download it below:

P.S. We will be very grateful if you share this http://site/obrabotka/obrabotka-v-stile-benoit-paille/ or any other blog article http://site via social media or any other ways to connect with your friends :) Thank you!

P.S. Unsubscribe in the comments below for any processing questions, I'll be glad to help! :)

Photography today is not just a way to capture an important life moment. Thanks to a huge amount of high-end equipment and special programs, everyone has the opportunity to make photography their hobby. Artistic photography as an art form is quite multifaceted. Even a beginner will be able to show his imagination to his heart's content. At the same time, everyone will find their favorite genre.

A little history

Today there is a digital camera in every home. But a hundred years ago photography was a real luxury. Few people know that an ordinary photograph is an image painted with light. This unique discovery came about thanks to several scientists. Before photography appeared in the form in which many people know it, a lot of work was done. The history of photography is interesting and exciting.

Attempts to obtain images were recorded back in the 17th century. But they cannot be called successful. Art photography dates back to 1839. The French scientist Louis Daguerre was the first to obtain a clear image of a person. In this case, the exposure time did not exceed a minute. Since then, photography has been improved many times. Today we have the opportunity to create real masterpieces with minimum costs time.

How to create a unique photo?

Anyone can pick up a camera and take pictures of everything without any preliminary settings. In this case, you will most likely not be able to get a beautiful photo. Those who want to become a real photographer should first learn how to correctly select the content of the frame. The light must be selected correctly and the lens must be adjusted. These rules are the same for any technique, regardless of whether you have to shoot with an old Zenit or the latest digital camera.

It is impossible to become a professional photographer from the very first days. You will have to take a huge number of pictures before a real masterpiece is born. In this regard, digital technology has many advantages. An unsuccessful frame can be deleted at any time. Every aspiring photographer should identify for himself the genres of photography that he will pay attention to first. To become a professional, you can’t spread yourself thin. It is rare to find a specialist who is well versed in all sectors of a particular field of activity.

Portrait

Portrait photography was born when people learned to take the first photographs. Here artists tried to repeat the images of painting. The first portraits were quite expensive. Only aristocrats could afford them. They took pictures both on their own and with their family members. Some ancient photographs have survived to this day and are now in museums around the world.

A portrait is not just an image of a face. If a person is depicted in full height, this is also considered portrait photography. Any school of photography primarily includes this genre in its course. Models can be photographed both outdoors and indoors. It is important that

the main emphasis fell precisely on the person. No details should distract attention.

Special mention should be made of studio shooting. This type of portrait photography is relatively new. Previously, stars were photographed in this way for fashion magazines. Today, everyone can please themselves with a photo shoot in the studio. Art photography is about correct selection background and lighting organization.

Still life

This genre of photography also originated from painting. Artists depicted beautifully arranged fruits and vegetables in their paintings. The image was complemented by beautiful fabric and dishes. As soon as the first school of photography appeared, still life also began to gain popularity. From the French "nature morte" literally means " inanimate nature" Professional photographers, like artists, are able to beautifully convey to the viewer the meaning of the existence of certain inanimate objects.

For a long time, still life belonged to an unclaimed genre. The technique and art of photography was taught in schools for educational purposes only. With development information technologies still life became very popular. With its help, photographers hone their professional skills. Besides, is it possible to remember an online store without product photos? After all, the image of a particular product is a still life.

Today, still life occupies one of the first places among all genres. The history of photography tells us that the emotional power of images of objects was previously not inferior to portrait photographs. At the moment this trend has been lost. But without still life, the existence of online stores would be impossible.

Scenery

The classic genre that involves photographing nature is called landscape. This branch of the photo industry can be called the most emotional. It is from nature that every aspiring photographer can draw inspiration. And some pictures are so amazing that it’s hard to take your eyes off them.

It is difficult for a beginner to master the landscape from the very first days. Anyone can take landscape photos. But the point is not to capture the moment. The image should convey the photographer’s state of mind. The process of finding a successful shot can be complicated by various natural phenomena. Unlike in the studio, work outside may be hampered by bright sun, precipitation or strong wind. Sometimes a photographer has to work for weeks to get a really good photo.

Architecture

Like previous genres of photography, architecture arose almost immediately. There is a huge resemblance to the landscape. The only difference is that the objects are various buildings and structures. There are also distinctive features. Great attention is paid the right choice shooting points. The most profitable way to rent a building is from a hill. For example, one house can be photographed from the roof of another.

Architecture is one of the most difficult genres. Finding the right position is often complicated by traffic and weather conditions. In addition, it is not always possible to convey details through the camera lens. Photographing architecture requires expensive equipment.

Reportage shooting

Today this genre is quite widespread. And reportage photography began to become popular only in the second half of the 20th century. Few people know that photographs of various events and holidays are a report.

It is believed that a photographer simply films this or that event. In fact, reporting is an opportunity to convey not only the essence of certain actions, but also the attitude towards them. If we consider various genres of photography, the reportage most accurately conveys the character of the photographer, his emotional state and professionalism. If a protest is being photographed, for example, it is up to the photographer to show both sides in a positive light. An objective view of things is one of the most important features character that a real photojournalist should have.

Household or genre photographs

Transferring using a camera Everyday life refers to genre photography. Quite often, images have a documentary basis. Genre photographs are very similar in essence to reportage ones. A professional must convey life exactly as it is. The photo may show children playing, a grandmother cleaning the yard, a beggar begging, etc.

The difference between genre photography is the ability to convey the emotional state of not only the photographer, but also the subjects themselves. In the picture you can see joy, tears, disappointment and anger. This can be either street photography or indoor photography.

Interior photography

Today we cannot do without this genre of photography, although it is quite young. Already finished interior, created by a professional designer, has its own emotional load. At the same time, the photographer’s task is to convey the idea completely without distortion. Interior photography is closely related to design. No professional could create a portfolio of their work without the help of an experienced photographer.

The angle has great value in portrait photography. The correctly chosen point determines how the room will look in the picture. In addition, one element allows you to decorate the entire space. Therefore, the photographer should pay special attention to the most advantageous interior details.

Reproduction

This genre of photography is not artistic. Despite this, he has important. There are a huge number of scanners with different technical characteristics. But the photographer will be able to convey the essence of the picture more correctly. In addition, many ancient images require special treatment. Do not touch the paint again. Photography is the ability to accurately transfer an image onto paper. And some photographs are taken with such high quality that it can be quite difficult to distinguish the photo from the original.

Photography in Nude style

The naked human body is a popular subject for filming today. In fact, this genre originated quite a long time ago. Everyone knows that artists loved to depict their women without clothes. As soon as the first artistic photograph appeared, the Nude style was born. This genre is one of most important places for many centuries.

Most often, girls are the subject of photography. This can be either street photography or studio photography. A naked body in photographs can only cause positive emotions. No anger or disgust.

Nude style is often intertwined with everyday photography. These genres of photography exist perfectly together. For example, a naked girl may be depicted doing her everyday affairs or sunbathing on the beach.

Avant-garde

As with any other area of life, you can find a non-standard approach to photography. Avant-garde is a special genre of photography. It is characterized by going beyond conventional aesthetics. To achieve his goals, a photographer can use the most unconventional means.

Avant-garde does not have any specific features like other genres of photography. Therefore, it is often quite difficult to track the professionalism of a photo. The photographer can depict a “second reality” that is in no way connected with the real world. The subject of photography can be people, animals, household items and plants. And they will be depicted in an unusual form for others.

Macro photography

This genre is very popular among beginning photographers. It involves obtaining an image at a certain scale. Many people consider macro photography to be an opportunity to photograph at a short distance from the subject. But it is not so. Special lenses allow you to take high-quality photographs. Technology for transferring objects on a large scale is quite expensive.

Macro photography allows you to capture the life of insects, small animals, and microorganisms. With an expensive lens you can even photograph a mosquito or a flea.

Non-standard photography genres

There are types of filming that cannot be called generally accepted in professional circles. First of all, these include self-portraits. No photographer can photograph himself well. This genre is more suitable for amateurs. With the development of information technology, self-portrait began to enjoy enormous popularity. At the same time, in order to take a photo, a regular mobile phone is most often used.

You can also shoot landscapes with your smartphone. The photos look good for a home album. High-quality professional photographs must be created using appropriate technology, which is not cheap. It is still advisable to start getting acquainted with photography with a semi-professional SLR camera from the middle price category. Such equipment allows a novice photographer to get an idea of the genres of photography, as well as learn the basics.
