How to clean old film from PVC windows. How to remove film from plastic windows: methods and tools. A few words about protective film

Caring about warmth and comfort in their homes, many people prefer installing plastic windows. These modern designs distinguished by impeccable appearance, sealed. Usually, after installation is completed, a protective film remains on the frames, which is often forgotten to remove in time. Over time, it firmly dries to the plastic surface, after which it becomes difficult to get rid of. It happens that you need to remove the sun from the windows protective film or remove traces of glue. Effective methods will help you cope with these tasks.

Why it can be difficult to remove protective film from windows

The main function of the film applied to plastic window frames in the factory is to provide effective protection of products during transportation. But under the influence of aggressive external environment(heat, ultraviolet light) they are able to stick to a plastic surface. In addition, when making protective films, high-quality adhesive is not always used, which makes it even more difficult to remove such protection over time. Get rid of the film without attaching special effort, possible within 10 days after installation of double-glazed windows. If for some reason it was not possible to do this on time, do not despair.

If the protective film is not removed in time, over time it will be much more difficult to do so.

How to remove film and adhesive tape from plastic windows

Methods for removing solar control film (foil) from a window

During hot summer days, the windows and glazed balconies of many apartments are exposed to scorching sunlight, which negatively affects the internal microclimate of the premises. A fairly effective means of protection against them is a film that can reflect the sun's rays.

With the onset of autumn and cold weather, the need for such protection disappears and the film must be removed. However, such materials can become firmly embedded in the surface of the window under the influence of the sun, after which it becomes difficult to remove them. To solve the problem you can use:

  • denatured alcohol;
  • steam generator;
  • eraser.

You can also remove the sun protection film using various detergents:

  • Domax;
  • Schumann;

When using these formulations, it is also advisable not to forget about safety precautions and follow the manufacturers’ recommendations and dosages. If after them the adhesive base of the film remains, you can use the following means:

  • Kiehl Tablefit spray liquid: apply to a cloth and clean the surface;
  • stain remover Taygeta S-405: apply to remaining glue for 15–30 seconds;
  • FORMULA X-5 liquid solution: effective in 10–15 minutes;
  • Super CMF-240 from the Krizal company: positioned as a “dirt separator”, it removes the adhesive base of the film worse than the previous ones, but for allergy sufferers it may be the only applicable product from industrial compositions;
  • highly alkaline liquid Merida Impet for removing stubborn stains: apply to the glue for 2 minutes.

Soap solution and old newspapers

There is another method of removing sun protection film that does not require any special material costs. To use it you will need:

  • soap solution;
  • old newspapers.

Operating procedure:

  1. Holding the newspaper with your hand, lean it against the glass and moisten it generously with soapy water using a sprayer. Repeating this operation again and again, it is necessary to cover the entire window space with newspapers.
  2. Leave newspapers stuck to the window for 1 hour, periodically spraying them with soapy water.
  3. Remove the sun protection film along with newspapers.

This one is simple and effective method very effective, but requires sufficient quantity time. Using it, you will not harm the surfaces being treated.

Safety precautions

  1. When removing protective films from double-glazed windows, it should be taken into account that many of the chemicals are very aggressive solutions and can cause harm to the body. For this reason, they should be handled carefully, remembering to use rubber gloves, safety glasses, and if you are prone to allergic reactions respirator.
  2. When wiping off adhesive from glass, do not press too hard on the surface. Otherwise, the glass may crack or fly out.
  3. When working with sharp objects, you must be careful not to damage plastic surfaces or accidentally injure yourself.

Using simple mechanical and by chemical means By removing the protective film coating from windows, you can achieve the desired result without much effort. However, it should be remembered that such work cannot be rushed, and when performing it, one should not forget about safety precautions.

When I had the opportunity to remove the film myself from a window installed 3-4 years ago, I tried many methods, and on personal experience convinced that there is no ideal and quick remedy, in any case, you will have to tinker a lot and be patient. So, here are my own works with reviews:

1 Remove the film with something sharp

This is the simplest and affordable way, find a razor blade or a stationery knife, or any other sharp object, including even nail sticks, and use this object to pick at the edges of the film, slowly peeling it away from the plastic.

The work, I’ll tell you, requires a lot of patience, because they come off in pieces, which also stick back to another place, it’s just some kind of restoration. It's too long and tedious, and when you lose patience and try to speed up the process, you start scratching the plastic.

It is best to use these sticks:

There are even professional tool, though it was developed not for removing film from a window, but for cleaning glass ceramics:

I didn't have to work with them, but most likely it won't be as useful on oval and hard-to-reach places.

2 Hot air from a hair dryer

At first we tried a hair dryer, but it does not produce such a powerful flow and overheats quickly, so I had to ask for a professional hair dryer with a tip. The action is simple, you need to warm up the remaining film and then peel it off.

Things went faster when they started using sticks and a hairdryer at the same time; in fact, when the film warmed up, it was easier to remove, but there was an inconvenience - it burned your hands.

A hairdryer is good when removing film from a new window in large pieces to pull the edge and warm the area that has not yet been removed.

3 Solvent liquid

You just need to apply the solvent to the film and wait until it softens, then use either a rag or a sponge, or the same sticks or blades.

You can use it like ordinary solvents, such as white spirit, 646 and others, but first you need to try it on a hidden piece of the window so as not to dissolve the plastic. Or use a professional solvent, like this industrial one:

Using regular solvent is such a stink that it doesn't even help. open window, but it does not dissolve the film, but only makes it softer and only at the edges does it come off well.

A professional solvent with a scent (we used orange) so it doesn’t really stink, but you still have to inhale the dissolution products, and it dissolves the film not much better than usual, despite the fact that its price per bottle is about 1000 rubles.

5 Eraser - eraser for erasing a pencil.

An absolutely useless thing, unless you need to remove a film no larger than a fingernail.

6 Soap solution using a stiff brush

I also tested this method, it only breaks the edges of the film, but the main part holds on. But it removes the glue itself well when the film is torn off.

New plastic windows have a coating that many people do not remove immediately. Over time it dries out, making it difficult to get rid of. How to remove dried film from plastic windows without damaging them?

How to remove film from plastic windows

Why does the protective film need to be removed immediately?

New plastic windows have a film that protects them from dust, dirt and damage in the form of scratches. The design is two-layer and is glued to the window using a special compound. Under the influence of sunlight, the inner layer of the coating is destroyed and sticks to the plastic. Every day the film will become more and more difficult to remove.

How to remove protective film from plastic windows

For this purpose, several methods are used: mechanical (using tools) and chemical (household mixtures).

The first includes:

Scraper for cleaning glass ceramic surfaces. You can use it to remove protective covering. And then remove traces of paste with window cleaner. You need to work with the scraper carefully, as it leaves scratches.

Industrial dryer. It can be replaced with a regular one. First, point the device at the film (a hot air stream will peel it off) and then use a utility knife to scrape off the remaining residue.

No less effective way– use of a steam generator. The principle of operation is almost the same as that of a hair dryer.

An ordinary eraser will also help to cope with the problem.

Mechanical methods remove the protective coating, and adhesive residues are easily removed with either a cleaner or an acrylic solvent.

Chemical methods:

Denatured alcohol. Pour a few spoonfuls into a flower sprayer and spray the coating. After a few minutes, peel off the film with a knife.

Paint remover. Apply the composition to the surface and wait 10 minutes. Over time, the coating will begin to swell and can be easily removed from the window.

Using chemical compositions You should wear gloves to avoid damaging your skin. It is also recommended to wear glasses for safety reasons.

Protective film on the frames of metal-plastic windows is necessary to protect against dust, dirt and scratches that form during transportation and installation. Manufacturers indicate that after installing the structure, it should be removed immediately, without delaying it, especially in the summer. Why you need to rush and how to remove the film - we’ll talk in this article.

So, remember that it is necessary to remove the protective film from the frame in a timely manner, namely, immediately after installing the windows or in the next 10 days. If the film remains on the frames for one or two months, then you can easily deal with it. But if this period increases to 3 or more months, you will have to sweat and put in a lot of effort to get rid of it, since it sticks tightly. It is worth removing not only the film from the PVC profile, but also the one that is located on the ebb and window sill.

Factors that enhance film adhesion:

  • Action of ultraviolet light. This takes into account which side of the house the windows are located on. The film on the shadow side can be easily removed even after several months. In the sun, it’s hard to tear it off after just a couple of days.
  • Quality of adhesive composition. Film glued with poor glue is more difficult to remove. This very often happens when installing inexpensive metal-plastic windows.
  • Heat. When installing windows in summer, the film dries very quickly, eating into the frame, winter period this process occurs later.
The methods by which this problem can be solved are: mechanical, chemical. The film can be removed with a scraper designed for cleaning cooktops and glass-ceramic hobs. To remove any remaining glue, small scratches, let's use a cleaner. COSMOFEN 10 or FENOSOL will do. Cosmofen can be purchased from a company that installs metal-plastic structures. Do not use Cosmofen No. 5, as it is the most powerful solvent capable of dissolving plastic. Acrylic solvent R-12 can also cope with this task, but be careful and try the chemical on an inconspicuous area, as it can change the color of plastic frames. It is also recommended to use microfiber.

If the film does not come off and is removed in small pieces, you can use an industrial hair dryer. If this is not the case, take a home device with high power and use it in turbo mode. Direct the flow of hot air at the frame itself, because if directed at the glass packages, they will burst. Heat the film, carefully pry it with something until it cools down, at an angle of 45 degrees. For example, with a stationery knife, blade or scalpel. Now you can easily tear it away from the profile. Try to use cutting tool as little as possible, and use your fingers more. To remove marks, proceed as described in point 2. Another method is similar to the method described above, but involves using a steam generator instead of a hair dryer. It is considered more effective. Alternatively, you can remove the film using chemical substances:
  1. Fill the spray bottle with denatured alcohol. Take an ordinary container for indoor plants. Spray the mixture onto the frame metal-plastic window, wait a while - as a rule, a few minutes are enough, prying up the edge, carefully pull off the film.
  2. According to numerous reviews, the product “Shumanit”, produced by the Israeli manufacturer Buggy, has a miraculous effect. However, it is very strong, and you should act with extreme caution.
  3. White spirit will also help you with this difficult task. However, remember that it is not applied on top of the film, but in the space formed between it and the plastic. To do this, you need to pry off the protective film with a cutting object and pour the substance into it. After some time, the film can be easily peeled off.

All these methods will allow you to remove not only the film from the profile, but also the stickers located on the double-glazed windows, since usually the same glue is used in these cases. But it is better to remove the film in time. And if there are still repairs to be made, and you are afraid of staining the frame, cover it with masking tape.

The profile of a plastic window is covered with a special film, which protects it from dirt, scratches and other mechanical damage during delivery and installation. It is very easy to remove it from the product, but it must be done in time. It is advisable to start this immediately after the window is installed. Otherwise, it will be necessary to resort to more radical methods of cleaning the film from the profile.

Why is it difficult to remove protective film from a window?

The instructions for plastic windows usually indicate that the film must be removed within 2 weeks after installation. Removing the film will not cause much difficulty in the coming months. However, if it remains on the profile for more than 4 months, a lot of effort will have to be made to remove the film.

For what reasons could this problem occur? The film contains several layers that are attached to the profile using special glue. Strong adhesion to plastic occurs under the influence of solar radiation, as well as heat. In other words, the process of decomposition of the inner very thin layer of the film occurs. Therefore, the inner layer is much more difficult to remove than the surface layer.

Reasons that contribute to increased adhesion of film and PVC frame:

  • action of heat. IN summer time the film dries to the frame much faster than in winter;
  • The quality of the special glue applied to the film affects the difficulty of its removal. The cheaper the windows, the lower the quality of the glue;
  • exposure to UV rays. The adhesive layer of film on windows located on the south side of the building may dry out faster. Therefore, it can be more difficult to remove film on such windows than on windows located on the north side.

How to remove film and adhesive tape from metal-plastic windows

It is recommended to remove the protective film from the window within 2 weeks after installation. Then it will be difficult to do this. This is due to the fact that under the influence of various factors its adhesive layer will change its characteristics. You may need to seek help from a cleaning company or wipe off the old tape yourself using tools and substances such as:

  • scraper;
  • construction hair dryer;
  • scissors;
  • Cosmofen;
  • different chemicals.

If the adhesive tape does not come off completely, you should use alcohol or tape.

Methods for removing adhesive tape from plastic windows

There are many methods for removing adhesive tape from double glazed windows. However, the fastest and most in effective ways, thanks to which all the film is removed and the surface of the window is not damaged, are the following:

  • scraper or brush. Removing tape with this tool will never damage the window surface when used with a soap solution;
  • an eraser that will need to scrub the film quite intensively. But at the same time, the profile surface is well preserved;
  • construction hair dryer - the best remedy, but when using it, one condition must be observed. The hair dryer can only be directed at the frame. If a stream of hot air hits a glass unit, it may crack or burst due to exposure to temperature. A construction hair dryer heats the tape, after which the glue begins to dissolve, which means you can easily remove it;

Advice. If you don’t have a hair dryer, you can always use a regular one, but it should work in turbo mode. But do not forget that this option is suitable if the protective film is not very strongly glued to the PVC profile.

  • White spirit can also be useful in removing the adhesive film from the product, but it is usually applied not on top of the PVC window, but between the film and the surface of the product. It is necessary to pry up its edge and moisten the area with white spirit. Wait a few minutes and remove the film;
  • Cosmofen is excellent at removing film. This product has proven itself as a cleaner for plastic windows;
  • thin knife. You should use such a tool carefully, since pressing it hard can scratch the window profile. In this case, the actions should be as follows: use a knife to pick up a small edge of the film, then tear it off very slowly. Residues of glue are removed using a solvent;
  • Wide tape will help remove any remaining adhesive tape. It's very easy to use. You need to stick the tape on the surface and carefully remove it along with the rest of the film;
  • Industrial alcohol or denatured alcohol must be poured into a small spray bottle and the substance should be sprayed evenly onto the protective film. The denatured alcohol should be left on the surface for a few minutes. Then pry the edge of the film with a knife and remove the film. In this way, the entire profile is sprayed and the remaining film is removed. The glue is removed with acrylic solvent;
  • Schumann. The effectiveness of this detergent, which is produced in Israel by the Buggy company, has been proven by numerous consumer reviews. And since this is a strong remedy, it must be used with extreme caution;
  • RP-6 is an excellent film remover, which must be applied thickly to the surface of the frame for 10 minutes. The film swells and comes off easily after using this drug;
  • a weak solvent does a good job of removing traces of PVC films. However, remember that before you apply the product over the entire surface, you need to test its effect on an inconspicuous area of the window.

Attention! It is worth saying that the options listed above are always applicable for all parts window designs, since the adhesive used for them is the same.

How to remove solar control film or foil from a window

All modern materials, protecting our homes from high external temperatures, contain not only aluminum, but also other elements that complicate the process of removing them from the surface. To ensure that there are no noticeable stains or streaks on the glass, foil or film from the window is removed with special care. There are the most popular methods for cleaning windows from PVC film.

Steaming against old adhesive tape

Using a modern steamer, you can easily remove the film from the window. The entire cleaning process must be carried out in several stages.

  1. A small area on the window must be heated with hot steam produced by the steamer. In this case, it is important that its direction is pointwise and not over the entire area of the window.
  2. After 5 minutes you should lift small area film, and then pull it towards you, thereby separating the film from the window.
  3. We do the same with the new area until the entire window is clear of solar control film.

This is the most basic and gentlest option for film removal. And even if there are traces left on the window after it, they are removed using a regular soap solution.

How to wash mirror film using newspaper

The sun protection film can also be removed using ordinary soapy water and newspaper. This work is done in several stages.

Other means and methods

Cleaning and detergents that can be used to remove duct tape from the window frame, suitable for removing stains and film from the glass surface. In addition to the already mentioned Cosmofen and Schumanite, effective substances such as:

  • Phenosol;
  • Domax (the product is intended for gentle care of ceramics and glass, so it does not contain abrasive substances).

But even these are very powerful tools do not always cope with the task. In this case, you need to use a hard scraper or choose another method of cleaning the film from the window.

This way you can avoid not only contamination, but also damage to the surface. PVC profile in the process of renovation. Then, after completing all the work, you will not need to make great efforts to remove the stuck tape;
  • After removing the protective sticker, treat all moving parts of the fittings with lubricant;
  • do not use abrasive substances;
  • when using chemicals, take into account their level of impact on the PVC surface, otherwise you can damage one of the layers of the window at the micro level;
  • work with sharp objects carefully, and if possible, remove the film with your fingers so as not to leave scratches on the profile;
  • Do not use strong solvents that can damage the profile.

Before you begin removing the film from the PVC window, you must complete all installation work. In this case, a great view window opening will please you for a long time. The exception is those types of work after which you physically cannot remove the film.
