Height of the sofa from the floor. How tall should the sofa be? Are standards needed?

When determining the overall and functional dimensions of household furniture, it is necessary to be guided by the standards “Domestic Furniture. Functional dimensions" (GOST 13025.1 - GOST 13025.18). They are installed in accordance with anthropometric characteristics and taking into account the size, quantity and rational placement of household items. The dimensions of products and individual elements that are not specified by standards are established by the designs for this product. Below are functional dimensions main furniture products.

The dimensions of the compartments for storing clothes and hats must correspond to those shown in Fig. 1.

Fig.1

The depth of the compartments for storing hats must be at least 240 mm. Distance from the floor to the top edge of the rod or to work surface top hook - no more than 1900 mm (it can be larger if the cabinet is equipped special devices, ensuring ease of use of the product - a lever for lowering and raising the bar, etc.).

The dimensions of the compartments for storing linen must correspond to those indicated in the table. 1.

Note. The dimensions indicated in brackets are allowed by agreement with the consumer.

The distance between the shelves or between the shelf and the limiting element of the compartment should be within 280-400 mm. If there are pull-out shelves or trays, the distance between them is allowed 170 mm. The height of the rear side of pull-out trays and shelves is at least 30 mm.

The useful volume of compartments for storing one set of bedding in cabinets, wardrobes and sofa beds must be at least 0.11 m3. In sofa beds internal height compartment (box) - at least 120 mm.

The dimensions of the compartments for storing books should be as follows: the distance between the shelves is 180-390 mm, the depth of the compartment is 140-440 mm. To store magazines, albums and other products in a horizontal position, the distance between shelves can be less than 180 mm.

The dimensions of the compartments for storing dishes must correspond to those indicated in the table. 2.

Note. Maximum distance between shelves should not exceed 390 mm.

The internal dimensions of drawers for storing cutlery, drawers and half-drawers for table linen are given in table. 3.

Note. The depth of a box (half-box) is taken to be the distance from its bottom to structural element, limiting the height of stored items. The distance from the floor to the upper edge of the front wall of the top drawer or half-drawer intended for storing linen, table linen and cutlery should not exceed 1250 mm.

Fig.2

The functional dimensions (mm) of compartments for storing shoes in horizontal and inclined positions are as follows: for shoes, boots, low shoes - H = 320, H = 150; for boots - B = 320, H = 450. When storing shoes, boots, low shoes in a vertical position - B = 150, H = 320; boots - H = 450, H = 320. The minimum width of the compartment for joint storage of pairs of shoes is 250 mm, and for separate storage (on rods, pegs, in cassettes, etc.) - 125 mm. For closable compartments, the depth is measured as the distance from back wall to the inside surface of the doors.

The functional dimensions of kitchen cabinets must correspond to those shown in Fig. 3.

Fig.3

If the cabinet-table contains electrical wiring, water supply or sewerage installations, the back wall can be recessed up to 100 mm. The internal size of a utility cabinet, in which the installation of built-in equipment is not provided, should be equal to 300 mm. Depending on the thickness of the material used, deviation of the overall depth is allowed wall cabinet within ±35 mm.

The functional dimensions of chairs, work chairs, sofa beds, lounge chairs, chair beds, stools, beds and mattresses are regulated by GOST 13025.2 (the standard does not apply to metal beds, ottomans, couches and folding chairs).

The dimensions of chairs and work chairs must correspond to those shown in Fig. 4.

Fig.4. Functional dimensions: a - chairs; b - work chairs; c - sofa beds and chair beds; d - sofas and chairs for relaxation.

For chairs, the width of the seat at the widest part should be at least 360 mm, and the bend line of the back at a height h from the seat should be 165-200 mm. For work chairs, the seat width at the widest part is at least 400 mm, the distance between the armrests is at least 420 mm (at a height of 180 mm from the back), their height above the seat is 180-240 mm. The radius of curvature of the back (in plan) must be no less than: normal - 450 mm, lumbar - 220 mm. The distance from the floor to the lower edge of the front frame or drawer is no more than 300 mm.

Note that by normal we mean a backrest, the upper edge of which is located above the seat at a distance of more than 320 mm, and by lumbar - a backrest, the upper edge of which is located above the seat at a distance of no more than 320 mm. The depth of the seat is defined as the distance from the front edge of the seat to the line of its intersection with the back or with the vertical passing through the inflection point of the back.

The dimensions of the sofa beds are shown in Fig. 4 in, and sofas and lounge chairs - in Fig. 4 g. The width of one seat of the sofa must be at least 500 mm, and the seat of the chair in the widest part must be at least 480 mm (it is determined at a distance of 300 mm from the back). The height of the armrests above the seat on sofas and lounge chairs should be 120-350 mm (measured from the middle of the seat depth). Dimensions sleeping place must be at least: 1860-700 mm - for sofa beds; 1860-600 mm - for chair-beds.

The dimensions of the stools must correspond to those shown in Fig. 5.

A kitchen stool with a height of 650 mm must have a footrest.

The dimensions of beds and mattresses for them must correspond to those indicated in Fig. 6.

Fig.6

The length of the mattresses can be as follows (and the recommended length is given in brackets): l = (1860), (1900), 1950, 2030 mm; width of single mattresses - b = (700), (800), 900 mm, double - (1100), (1200), 1400, 1600 mm.

The functional dimensions of tables are determined in accordance with GOST 13025.3, which applies to dining tables, kitchen dining tables, desks, secretaries, as well as products for installing televisions (except for compartments for installing televisions in multi-purpose cabinets).

The dimensions of dining and kitchen dining tables, as well as seating at the table, are shown in Fig. 7.

Fig.7

In rectangular dining tables with a lid length of at least 1200 mm, the distance between the legs along the longitudinal axis must be at least 910 mm (for installing two chairs).

The dimensions of the seat at the kitchen dining table are allowed to be at least 500x300 mm. The dimensions of the table cover are determined depending on the number of seats. The functional dimensions of drawers and compartments for storing cutlery and linen are taken in accordance with GOST 13025.1 (see Table 3).

The dimensions of desks and secretaries are shown in Fig. 8.

Fig.8

The distance between the front edge of the table cover and the depth-limiting element must be at least 400 mm. The distance from the floor to the working plane of products for performing typewritten work, work on a computer and other organizational equipment is at least 680 mm.

Accepted minimum dimensions working plane of desks: length - 800 mm, width - 500 mm, and secretaries - 700 and 400 mm, respectively.

The internal dimensions of drawers and half-drawers for papers must be at least 340x240 mm, and their depth - 65 mm. (The depth is taken to be the distance from the bottom to the structural element that limits the height of the stored items.) But the indicated dimensions do not apply to boxes intended for storing pencils, feathers, and erasers.

When designing tables complete with chairs, work chairs or stools, the height distance between the working plane of the table and the seat of the chair, armchair or stool should be 290-310 mm, and between the lower edge of the under-table and the seat - at least 190 mm. In transformable tables with a double-thick lid, the distance between the working plane and the seat can be increased by the thickness of the table lid.

The main functional dimensions of products for installing TVs are as follows: height of the plane for installing the TV - 500 mm, width - 390-600 mm.

Children's furniture is made in several sizes, taking into account the average height of children. Thus, tables and chairs are made in five numbers: 00; 0; 1; 2; 3 respectively for the average height of children 750; 900; 1050; 1200; 1350 mm.

Children's beds are made in two types: I - with fencing and variable bed height, for children under 3 years of age; II - for children aged 3 to 7 years. Their dimensions are as follows (mm):

In type I beds, it must be possible to move the side rail downwards during operation by at least 135 mm. By agreement with the consumer, it is allowed to manufacture children's beds with greater length and width.

(from the book by A.A. Bartoshevich “Furniture Production Technology”)

The comfort of your home sofa directly influences your feeling of comfort. After all, we can only fully relax on upholstered furniture that meets all the necessary parameters. It will be difficult to sleep on a narrow sofa. And a hard back is unlikely to give you a feeling of comfort when you sit on an ottoman after a hard day at work.
In addition to size and shape, one of the most important parameters of a sofa is its height. It determines not only the possibility of installing furniture in rooms with a special layout so that the model fits perfectly into the interior, but also a number of other important factors, which we will discuss in detail.

So, it is believed that the optimal height of the sofa is about 90-100 cm.

As for the seat itself, its height should not be less than 42 cm (according to generally accepted standards). Otherwise, if these parameters are lower, sitting in a sitting position, you will not be able to relax your muscles. And, as a result, even if you are there for a long time, you will not feel a sense of relaxation. True, these parameters do not apply to children's sofas. Their height, of course, should be much smaller. Bulky furniture for a child will clearly not be comfortable.

A separate problem is the parameters of the sofa for older people suffering from joint diseases and improper posture. On the contrary, taller options are more suitable for them, preferably with a rigid back.
The height of the sofa is usually indicated in technical passport in third place - after the width and length of the model. Many buyers often confuse the height of all furniture as a whole with the height of the back and seat. However, the documentation always indicates exactly the first parameter.
Standard height many sofas are 90 cm. However, this figure may vary depending on the type of furniture, retractable mechanism (if available), as well as other design features. It’s no secret that models of straight and angular types, especially depending on what are made by different manufacturers, may differ from each other in the height of the seat and backrest.
If furniture needs to be installed in a corner of the room, provided that this room large sizes, it is recommended to buy a sofa whose dimensions exceed the generally accepted height parameters - it should be in the range of 110 cm. For small rooms, sofas with standard indicators are quite suitable.
All of the above does not apply to modular sofas. In principle, their design bears little resemblance to other, more familiar to us, types of upholstered furniture. The height of such sofas usually does not exceed 70 cm, and therefore they can be installed in any part of the room.
The height of upholstered furniture is also affected by the following technical features:
- the presence or absence of support legs - they make the sofa higher or, conversely, lower. In addition, furniture with high legs can visually increase the area of the room, and sofas without means of support, on the contrary, can reduce it;
- the presence of pillows in the set, which are usually located on the seat. They can add height to the seating area for comfort. True, if the back of the sofa is low, then visually the upholstered furniture will still look low;
- hardness of the filler. No matter how high the sofa may look visually, if the filling is soft, then the seat will be strongly pressed at the moment when someone sits on it. And if the furniture sinks downwards, then the visual sense of height also decreases. Well, and, among other things, a sofa with soft filler can hardly be called comfortable. Not to mention that hard material is of much higher quality.

Optimal height the sofa is formed by manufacturers and taking into account the built-in transformation mechanisms. The standard parameters most often correspond to “book”, “eurobook” and “click-click”. For unfolding mechanisms (they are installed on folding sofas, both French and American, as well as on sedaflex-type models), a height of 100 cm, or even more, is more relevant.

The thing is that inside the seat there is a sleeping place that can be folded several times. Thanks to this, the back of the sofa automatically increases in height. We are talking only about the position of the furniture in its original form. When the retractable part moves apart, the sofa itself decreases in size accordingly.

So, the most important thing to consider when choosing optimal sofa for your apartment - these are its parameters and specifications. Even if this data is not indicated in the product passport (and this sometimes happens), before purchasing, do not be too lazy to find out this information from the sellers. Or, if you have a ruler, measure the height yourself. After all, whether the furniture meets the required standards or not directly determines whether it will be comfortable for you to relax or sleep on this sofa.

The most important part of any living room is upholstered furniture. In her “embraces” we read, watch TV, listen to music, play with children, and have intimate conversations. Modern models are able to respond to every movement of a person, allowing him to completely relax his body and soul.

The group of upholstered furniture includes a variety of items: a sofa, an armchair, a daybed, a sofa, an ottoman, a banquette, a chaise longue, a pouf, etc. The most common are sofas, armchairs and poufs (the latter can serve as a seat, a footrest and even a table). As for sofas, there are three types of them, differing in functionality and design:
a place to rest plus a permanent sleeping place. Such sofas are called universal. They are equipped with transformation mechanisms that allow you to unfold this piece of furniture every day and turn it into a double bed, as well as fold it;
a place to relax plus a sleeping area for guests. Such models are equipped with “folding bed” mechanisms (“Italian”, “French”, “American”) and are not designed for everyday use as a bed;
place to relax. These sofas allow a person to relax as much as possible and provide freedom of movement while relaxing. Particular attention is paid to adjustable backrests, headrests and armrests, and retractable footrests.

Armchairs can also not only perform their main function, but also serve as an alternative to a sleeping place. However, now more and more people just relax on sofas and armchairs and sleep in beds (if the living space allows for a separate bedroom and living room). It is this kind of upholstered furniture for relaxation that we will talk about.

1. Molecule's multi-functional, seven-piece modular living room set is amazingly adaptable. It can be a round sofa, “break up” into poufs and small tables, or only poufs of an original shape.
2. Compact furniture on a lightweight metal frame will organically fit into the modern interior of a living room or hall.
3. Designer models Italian manufacturers are often distinguished by their extravagance.
4. The Dutch are characterized by originality of thinking. This is clearly confirmed by the leather-upholstered conceptual armchair CottonBall (Leolux), which cannot be confused with others.

Bundling formulas

When planning a recreation area, two basic principles of configuration are used: an arbitrary set of structurally independent stationary objects or modular system.

Commonwealth of Independents. Leading manufacturers create both small sets of upholstered furniture and extended collection sets. Each of the items that make up the set is stationary, monolithic and structurally complete. The collections may include sofas of different sizes (for example, two-, three-seater), armchairs, poufs, couches. This allows the manufacturer to reduce production costs by reducing the range of parts. The consumer receives complete freedom of configuration (the ability to buy the entire set or select individual items from it). In addition, you can determine the composition of the recreation area yourself.

5, 6. The optimal height of a soft pouf for a living room should be equal to the height of the sofa seat. This type of furniture is comfortable to sit on and you can rest your tired feet on it. Bright poufs will become a spectacular accent.
7. Howlo set with convertible headrests: three-seater sofa plus two armchairs.
8. Asymmetrical “island” modules with the self-explanatory name Archipel (“Archipelago”). Products with backs are equipped with a gas lift mechanism, which allows you to raise the back by 8 cm.

Modular mix. Modular upholstered furniture is a design system consisting of a certain number of unfixed modules (sofas, armchairs, poufs, couches, etc.). They have a single artistic, constructive and technological solution, and are easy to combine with each other. The elements that make up the system resemble a set of cubes. From them, in any sequence, they build a composition that can look like a whole. The construction method and final form are chosen by the user himself. In addition, the modules can be used individually or in small groups.

Find your corner. In the group of various upholstered furniture, corner sofas occupy a special niche. They fit harmoniously into both spacious and small living rooms, smoothing out sharp corners and imperfections in the layout. Select a corner the right size not difficult. Corner sofas make it possible to do without armchairs and even without a low table if you replace it with a multifunctional pouf.

9, 10. Graceful high legs, "friendly" ergonomic design, bright colors - these are some of the trends in the development of modern upholstered furniture.
11. This module can be part of a corner sofa or an independent item that provides comfortable rest.
12. An armchair from the extensive Genesis collection is reminiscent of classic designs.

Manufacturers offer corner sofas in the form of a single structure or a modular system. But even in the first case, all elements are fastened to each other through a corner section (for example, using M8 screws, steel bolts, etc.) or the sofa is combined with a couch using locks (say, wedge locks). This greatly facilitates the transportation of a piece of furniture, as well as its assembly and disassembly at home.

All components of a modular corner sofa, like any other design system, are autonomous. The range of manufacturers of soft corners includes dozens of basic elements that allow you to come up with and easily implement many interesting compositions.

13. A pouf can serve as a seat, a footrest, a table, and convenient storage.
14. Leather sofa from the Dream collection (Calia Italia) meets the needs of the modern user and is a worthy example of ergonomics, style and quality.
15. Not only sofas and armchairs are equipped with patented transformation mechanisms, but also Stressless poufs.
16. Lightweight swivel chairs covered in bright leather are literally made for casual conversation.

Unbiased ergonomics

The purpose of upholstered furniture is to provide comfortable rest. Therefore, when choosing sofas and armchairs, pay attention to the row important details and parameters. This is the seat (height above the floor, width and depth, angle of inclination relative to the horizontal), back (height, quality of support for the back of a sitting person, angle of inclination), armrests (height above the seat, width, upholstery), sofa design and quality of pillows.

According to ergonomic requirements, sofas and armchairs are considered comfortable if they have a slight tilt of the seat back (up to 15), a large angle between the seat and back (at least 120) and head support. The greater the angle between your hip and torso (this allows you to stretch your legs forward and assume a comfortable reclining position), the more relaxed your muscles are. Typically, the seat height above the floor ranges from 35-48 cm (optimal - 39-45 cm). However, it should be taken into account that it is difficult for elderly people to get up from a low seat, and it is not easy to sit on it. A low sofa is not suitable for tall man- his knees will literally touch his chin. But low-height furniture is very comfortable and safe for small children.

17. Furniture can look fun and carefree, such as a multi-colored modular sofa consisting of two armchairs.
18. The chair, created on the principle of a mattress and pillow, miraculously changes its shape, taking the shape of the human body.
19, 20. Mobility, functionality, and the ability to fit into any space make poufs indispensable attributes of relaxation.

The seat height of a standard sofa is 42 cm. The depth of armchairs and sofas varies: minimum - 50-60 cm, but there are models with a depth of 77-90 cm. The backs of sofas and armchairs are low (no more than 32 cm), medium height (32-42 cm ) and high (from 42 to 70-77 cm). Back height classic sofas and the seats are approximately equal to the depth of the seat. Sofas and armchairs with a very high back (at the level of the back of the head and above), as a rule, do not have very deep seats - about 60 cm. Deeper models (from 70 cm) with a high back will require an additional pillow under the back, especially if they have small people are sitting. Sofas with a low back and a deep (100-125 cm) seat allow you to take a reclining position. And sitting back for a long time on such a sofa is uncomfortable: the back is too low - inappropriate support for the head and shoulders. Therefore, the latest generation models have a folding backrest, the height of which can be changed with the movement of your hand. The most comfortable is considered to be a profiled backrest (with a relief profile), which has two convex supporting elements: the lower one to support the lower back, the upper one to support the upper back, respectively. U high backs upholstered furniture designed to support the head should have a protrusion at the top that provides comfortable support for the neck.

When “testing” a sofa or chair for comfort, keep in mind that the edge of the seat should not reach the popliteal folds of the legs. If the seat of the chair is too wide, it will be uncomfortable to lean on the armrests. Therefore, most Stressless chairs (Norway) are available in three sizes, and Himola models (Germany) are available in four. Both are designed for different weight categories and body types. Pay attention to the height of the armrests. When placing your hands on them, make sure that your shoulders do not rise. If you do not follow this simple rule, curvature of the spine may occur.

21. The design of the chair takes us back to the streamlined shapes of the 60s. 20th century, but in a modern interpretation.
22. Lightweight Coco chair.
23. Youth collection Crack (Machalke).
24. Sofa for two for a small living room.

Swing, spin, relax!

Personal comfort can be provided by models whose frames use folding mechanisms. The sofas, armchairs and poufs equipped with it are very comfortable and ergonomic. Whatever position you take while sitting on them, it will allow you to relax and will not cause any harm to your health. Such models are called recliners (from English to recline - “lean back”, “recline”). Today this is one of the most promising areas in the development of upholstered furniture. In addition to armchairs, there are also recliner sofas. They represent whole line chairs or one located on the side of a regular sofa, such as a built-in TV chair or a side element with a massage function on Cumulus (Himolla) sofas. At the same time, manually or from the control panel, you can adjust the position of the headrest pillow, armrests, retractable footrest, height and angle of inclination of all elements. Such furniture is produced by reputable European manufacturers: Artanova (Switzerland), Bruhl, Gepade, Machalke, Rolf Benz (all - Germany), Pohjanmaan Kaluste (Finland), Sedac-Meral (France - Belgium), Valmori (Italy), State (USA) , Himolla , Stressless. Advertisers are also produced by domestic factories: "8 March", M bel Zeit, "Kalinka", "Moon", Papillon, as well as the Record Bedding company (Russia - Belgium).

The most advanced models are fraught with many possibilities. The self-adjusting headrest automatically moves in accordance with changes in the person's posture, so the user can read or watch TV in greater comfort. While supporting your head, the chair simultaneously provides anatomically correct and reliable lumbar support no matter how you sit - straight or leaning back. Just put your hands behind your head and pull the headrest towards you - and the back will take a position comfortable for sleeping. The armrests, equipped with a raster mechanism, are designed according to the same principle. For Stressless chairs, you just need to adjust the special wheel once, and in the future this furniture will automatically adjust to the weight of your body. Thanks to the built-in sliding system top part The pouf included in the chair set obediently follows the movement of the legs. The base of the chair has a built-in ring that allows it to rotate 360 degrees.

The Sedac-Meral chair reclines when you transfer the entire weight of your body to the back of the chair. At the same time, the footrest in front extends and rises. To fully unfold the chair, you just need to rest your hands on the frame and push back a little. The mechanism will lower parallel to the floor, and you will assume an almost horizontal position. To return to the original position, you just need to rise up and transfer your body weight to the seat, while at the same time helping the footrest to lower down with your feet. The seat depth of sofas can be adjusted individually for each user (for example, in models from M bel Zeit, Kalinka). Recliners also provide other functions: turning the chair into a rocking chair (glider mechanism), built-in massager (Himolla), etc.

Recliners require additional space to be able to fully unfold. Such sofas and armchairs fit harmoniously into modern interiors, but in classic ones they may look like alien objects. The price of a recliner chair is from 30 thousand rubles.

How to care? Gently!

Caring for upholstered furniture begins with careful use, and this, in turn, begins with proper placement. Do not place sofas and armchairs close heating devices, protect them from direct sunlight. If you vacuum your furniture regularly, you can keep it in pristine condition for many years. Do it about once a month wet cleaning. At the same time, pay Special attention seams where dust usually accumulates. If you wipe the items with a cloth slightly dampened in vinegar, the color of the upholstery material will become brighter. Remove spilled liquid from the upholstery immediately to prevent it from spreading over the surface and being absorbed.

With frame

Most pieces of upholstered furniture have a rigid frame, which is made of natural wood, metal or a combination of metal elements, plywood, wood boards (chipboard or fiberboard). The quality of the frame affects the life of the furniture. In expensive models, wood is most often used. Various parts of the structure of such furniture are connected not with nails and screws, but with the help of specially designed tongue-and-groove joints. Such products (manufactured by European companies) last a very long time. Domestic companies produce the frames of economy class models mainly from chipboard or pine timber (often quite carelessly).

It must be borne in mind that chipboard elements must be completely covered with film or fabric. If chipboards are used directly for the load-bearing frame of the sofa and hinges are screwed into these boards, the life of such a product will be short. In addition, chipboard frames make the object heavier. Welded ones are considered more reliable metal frames, although they are also not very light.

25. Original chair Kikko means "turtle" in Japanese. The striking design of the seat really brings to mind a huge turtle. By lowering the backrest so that it is parallel to the seat, you will gain additional space. With just one movement of the hand, Kikko can also be converted into a sun lounger. Shapeless comfort

About 40 years ago, a group of Italian designers decided to realize the dream of creating frameless upholstered furniture. They removed the rigid frame to make it easier for the user to customize it. This is how the beanbag chair appeared, which got its name due to the lack of shape as such. At the same time, it takes on the contours of the body of the person sitting on it, and provides relaxation and comfort. IN last years The bean bag chair has become very popular. There are also similar sofas and ottomans. You can seat several friends on a frameless sofa or transform it into a bed or chill-out. Inside these bags there are small polyurethane foam balls.

Children especially love bean bags: they are so good to jump and tumble on, they are safe because they do not have sharp or hard parts. Young people also like bags. A variety of frameless furniture delights with bright colors and original designs. It is produced by the factories "Ewald", Airpuff, Relax Service (all - Russia), "Mebleff", NST Alliance (both - Ukraine), Aqua Creations (Israel), Leolux (Netherlands), etc. Baby chair costs from 1500 rubles, adults - 2500-5000 rubles.

Soft - hard

In modern sofas and armchairs, the fillings are mainly polyurethane foam or fibrous mass, less often - synthetic foam. Widely used and spring blocks different types. The seats and backs of sofas and armchairs should not be pressed too deeply under the weight of the body. Softness and elasticity cannot be determined by touch - you need to sit on the pillows and maybe even jump a little. If they are excessively pliable and do not return to their original position, but “fall through,” it means that the material used is not sufficiently dense and durable. Conscientious manufacturers of upholstered furniture indicate on the product labeling specific gravity filler.

It has been noted that people perceive rubber, latex (natural rubber), horsehair, sheep wool and swan's down than foam rubber, synthetic padding, etc. Taking into account the constant interaction of fillers with the human body, manufacturers of expensive furniture try to use natural ingredients. And if they use synthetic materials, then passed medical and technical testing.

In sight

The choice of texture and color of upholstery material is a matter of taste. In our opinion, it is much more important how durable and easy to use this fabric is. Upholstery fabrics can be natural, mixed and synthetic (for example, tech, arpatek). There are also specially created fabrics with Teflon impregnation, on which no traces of fat, tea, coffee, wine, or milk remain. Upholstery fabrics may include mohair, silk, lycra, and metal threads. Suede is popular - natural and artificial, or Alcantara (very pleasant to the touch and wear-resistant). Most often, traditional tapestries, jacquard, fleecy velor and flock, faux fur, and cotton are used as upholstery.

Furniture fabrics are usually divided into categories depending on their performance properties. European and domestic manufacturers designate these categories differently - with letters or numbers. Each matter has a certain density, measured in grams per 1 m2 (for example, the density of chenille is 440 g per 1 m2). Important parameters are the abrasion of the fabric and its resistance to fading. Genuine leather occupies a special place among upholstery materials. Leather upholstered furniture is prestigious and durable, but it is 2-3 times more expensive than upholstered furniture.

Choose a sofa based on its legs!

A fashionable feature of a modern sofa is the legs, low but very graceful. Thanks to them, the sofas, which had been firmly placed on the floor for many years, gained lightness. When buying furniture, pay attention to the material from which the legs are made (steel is best). A large stationary sofa should also have a fifth leg so that the seat does not sag.

Where is the furniture and how much?

Italian upholstered furniture is, first of all, originality of solutions that combine traditional quality and experimentation. The modern directions of her design reflect freedom of style and new trends. As an example, we will give models from the factories Acam, Arketipo, Bonaldo, Comfort, CTS Salotti, Mussi, Natuzzi, Nieri, Relotti, Valmori, Vibieffe, etc. Upholstered furniture in a classic design is produced by Busnelli, Ceppi, Creazioni, Mantellassi, Valdichienti, Zanaboni.

German upholstered furniture, as a rule, is an alliance of classics and modern design and offers the highest comfort. It is produced by the companies Driftmeier, Franz Fertig, Himolla, Hukla, Kler, Machalke, Oelsa, W. Schillig, etc. This also applies to products from Wittmann (Austria). Sofas, armchairs and poufs from Scandinavia are characterized by practicality, balanced design and increased comfort. It is worth mentioning the products of the companies Adea Collection, Asko, FinnFani, Pohjanmaan Kaluste, Relax (all from Finland), Innovation (Denmark). Sofas and armchairs in original bold colors are designed for bright and extravagant people. Spanish manufacturers are represented by the factories Coleccion Alexandra, Gamintern, Taymoble, Tecni Nova, Vidal Grau, Soher, Jant y Jal, etc.

Among other manufacturers of upholstered furniture, we note the de Sede factory (Switzerland). Among domestic producers- the holding "8 March" (which includes the factories "8 March", Albert Shtein, Anderssen, Roybuch, Britanica, "Tsekh"), the factories M bel Zeit, "Allegro-Classics", "Good Style", "Kalinka", " Conceptum", "Mikmar", "Prestige-Furniture", "Sola-M", Dival, Pushe, Rival. Let's also call L-Style (Russia - Italy), "Laguna" (Belarus).

Prices for upholstered furniture depend on the quality of frame materials, filling composition, upholstery, design, availability decorative ornaments, self made, folding mechanisms. For example, if you can regulate the operation of the latter from the control panel, the product will be 12-30 thousand rubles more expensive than usual. The cost is also affected by the kit’s configuration or the number of modules.

Domestic sofas covered with fabric cost from 15-20 thousand rubles, and upholstered in leather - from 30-50 thousand rubles. The most economical corner compositions will cost 25-30 thousand rubles, but a more realistic price is from 40 thousand rubles. For a modular system, depending on the configuration, you will have to pay 57-90 thousand rubles. Prices for chairs start from 5-10 thousand rubles. Leading furniture European manufacturers at least 2 times more expensive.

But money isn't everything. “In order to buy a good sofa, you need your own view of the world, your own experience, your own philosophy” (Haruki Murakami. “Wonderland without brakes and the End of the World”).

The editors thank the companies "Grand", M bel Zeit and Collection for their assistance in preparing the material.

When planning to purchase a piece of furniture such as a sofa, the buyer will definitely focus on one of the main parameters when choosing it - size. Many people purchase upholstered furniture intending to use it as a sleeping place. Therefore, to select perfect option, it is also important to take into account the parameters of the room where the furniture will be located.

Features and Benefits

Before purchasing a sofa, you need to decide on its functional purpose. When using furniture as an additional place to sleep, it is necessary to take into account the way it is converted (transformed) into a bed. Sofas can be classified according to size by their shape and the way they are folded out. Based on this, the form distinguishes:

  • Corner
  • Direct
  • Modular
  • Island

Another sign of the classification of sofas is the presence or absence of a transformation mechanism. Modular and island sofas do not provide such a mechanism, however, corner and straight models require both the presence of a transformation device and its absence.

In terms of size, non-folding sofas have compact dimensions and are quite low price, however, they are less functional and are only suitable for sitting. Such models are perfect for the kitchen, small living room, and office.

If you intend to use the sofa as a place to sleep, you should pay attention to folding models, which are distinguished by great functionality, but have larger overall dimensions than non-folding products. Buyers will also be pleased with the presence of a linen drawer in some models, which will become an additional niche for things. However, it should be taken into account that this furniture is less mobile, and the constant use of the mechanism for transforming into a bed leads to its rapid wear. Therefore, the choice of folding method is one of the decisive factors when buying a sofa, as well as determining the necessary parameters.

When preparing to purchase a sofa, each buyer individually identifies the main and secondary criteria with which he can choose the ideal option for himself.

Corner

This type of sofa, such as a corner one, has the largest dimensions due to its shape and is suitable only for spacious room. You need to take into account in advance how much space the sofa occupies when unfolded, so that it does not block, for example, a passage or a chest of drawers. The corner side serves as an additional couch, on which you can either sit or recline. This part is often used as a place for reading, since a bedside table or floor lamp can easily fit on the side. This type provides a large linen drawer, which will become an additional niche for both bed linen and any other things.

The dimensions of such products are quite varied - from 140 cm to two meters or more, and the depth, on average, is 60-80 cm. It all depends on the transformation mechanism. Such models provide folding methods such as "dolphin", "puma".

When ordering this type of sofa, the buyer is also given the opportunity to choose a design that includes armrests or an option in which this element is absent.

Direct

When choosing straight sofa It is worth considering the room where it will be installed. For the kitchen, an oversized option would be an excellent choice, which will serve as an additional interior decoration. When choosing a sofa for the living room, the expected number of guests is taken into account, so designs that are more spacious are selected. Furniture parameters are selected based on the client’s wishes - from 130 cm and above, depending on its purpose. The sleeping place in straight models is provided both lengthwise and across, which depends on the method of converting it into a place to sleep.

The practicality of sofas with a mechanism such as "book", "click-clack", "accordion" The advantage is that when unfolded, they double in size without taking up extra space. And, for example, a roll-out sofa like "dolphin" or "cot" assumes the presence of a perpendicular sleeping place, occupying a fairly large space in front of the sofa. A positive feature of the latter is the small width of the structure when folded.

Sofas consisting of several modules, are a godsend for people who often like to rearrange furniture, because such a sofa will not only allow you to move it without problems, but also change its shape. Such models are presented in different overall dimensions, it all depends on the number of modules. The disadvantages are the high cost of such furniture, as well as the lack of sleeping space.

All modern sofas differ in comfort and functionality, but do not forget that the main thing when buying is to choose correct parameters upholstered furniture to purchase the perfect option for the room. The materials used for the upholstery, as well as the filling of the sofa, are also equivalent. They must be safe, high quality and durable.

Dimensions

Having chosen the shape of the sofa, it is necessary to correctly determine the parameters of the future purchase, taking into account the size of the area on which the furniture will be installed, as well as the mechanism for transforming it into a sleeping place. Each type is characterized by several dimensional options. For example, corner models are most often made with standard width sleeping space from 140 cm to 200 cm, depending on the number of people who will use such a product as a place to relax. Since structures with an angle have two straight parts, it is necessary to take into account the parameters of both, where most often the longest part can reach 180 cm in length. As for the depth of the sofa, models with a depth of 70 cm are considered the most comfortable.

Most often, straight models of sofas are produced with standard parameters, but in the case of purchasing furniture for a non-standard room, the order is made according to individual measurements. However, it is worth knowing that the price of such a product will be an order of magnitude higher than others. For example, if you wish, you can order an exclusive model with leather upholstery in your personal account, which will only emphasize the refined taste of the owner.

Depth in straight models is one of the most important parameters. You should also take into account not only the amount of space that the sofa occupies when folded, but also when unfolded:

  • In sofas such as “book”, “accordion”, where the sleeping place is supposed to be lengthwise, the standard length of the product depends on its destination. For the kitchen, a sofa with a length of 140, 150 cm will be sufficient. However, for big family acceptable product lengths are 160, 180, 190 cm. For large room the size of the product can be more than 2 meters, and the depth of the sofa can be from 60 cm to 80 cm.
  • When purchasing a sofa with a transformation mechanism, providing for a perpendicular place to sleep, it is important to consider its purpose. For example, the option for guests may be small - 100-120 cm wide and 170-190 cm long. Meanwhile, planning to use it as a double bed, you should pay attention to models from 190 cm to 200 cm long and 130 cm wide. 140 cm.
  • It is also worth noting that to the children's room a sofa can be purchased without a transformation mechanism, since a child may not need it. If the choice is a sofa that folds forward, it is worth considering that its length can reach 170 cm. Book-type models can reach 2 meters in length, and in some cases, 3 meters.
  • In models consisting of several modules, the size will depend on the shape of the sofa. The parameters of each module can vary from 50 cm or more.

How to choose?

By number of seats

Before purchasing upholstered furniture, it is worth roughly calculating how many people will use the sofa on an ongoing basis, since the size of the sofa and the number of seats on it will depend on this. Furniture consultants give some advice on this matter:

  • Parameters small models with withdrawable mechanism which will be used as a sleeping place for one person can reach 130-140 cm. An excellent option would be the “Baby” sofa, which has a flat and comfortable spot for sleep.
  • For a married couple it would be optimal sofa-and-a-half, as well as an option with a length of 170-180 cm. Sofas measuring 190 cm and even 210 cm are considered no less comfortable. The width of such structures is from 110 to 150 cm.
  • One of the most popular among buyers is model of a straight sofa 3 meters long. It will fit perfectly into the interior of a medium-sized living room and will be a profitable purchase for a large family. IN spacious apartment can be selected convenient option sofa with ottoman, where the corner part can be used as a fairly comfortable place for reading, equipping it with a lamp.
  • Designs aimed at a large living room can reach sizes from 4 to 6 meters in length depending on the parameters of the seat, the width of which can range from 70 to 90 cm. These models are most often made to special order., in which you can indicate the sizes of sofa cushions and the presence or absence of armrests.
