Fireplace base

The base must be rigid in order for the fireplace to sit firmly on the floor, so the base mold must be properly reinforced. This podium is strengthened with the help of additional inserts - stiffening ribs, which are secured inside.

The ribs can be assembled into a lattice, or they can be chaotically glued to the bottom and lid of the box.

You can make the base in two ways:

• Cut out a box with sides, install or glue stiffeners to its bottom using PVA glue.
• Cut out two identical panels of the required size from cardboard - this will be the bottom and the surface of the base. Stiffening ribs are attached and pressed to the bottom - they can be glued with glue or double-sided tape.

The side surfaces of this design consist of even strips, which are glued together from two or three layers of cardboard, which will give additional rigidity to the base. They are installed between the panels and glued with masking tape.

The frame can play the role of fairly reliable shelves that will serve to store handicraft items or other small items that are not used daily.

If the niches of the portal are planned to be used as shelves, then both the walls and the frame of the portal must be rigid, so they are also made of several layers of cardboard glued together.

Second option

The second version of the portal is easier to make than the first, since according to the dimensions established in the sketch, a regular box is assembled. In this case, the back wall will be solid and it will not be possible to arrange convenient shelves in it.

The front part of the portal is formed from strips of cardboard cut to size. Three or four strips will be needed, depending on whether the lower part of the fireplace will be covered by a few centimeters.

Installing a mantel

If you do not additionally strengthen the top panel of the manufactured fireplace structure, it will be impossible to install any decorative ornaments. Therefore, it is recommended to install a fireplace mantel.

It must be remembered that this element should not be heavier than the base of the fireplace, as the entire structure may fall. The weight of the mantelpiece should be about the same as that of the podium or even a little less.

It is best to make a shelf from two or three sheets of cardboard glued together. For the top layer, you can use ordinary dense material rather than corrugated material.

It is better to glue the mantelpiece using polymer glue or “liquid nails” - this way it will be securely seated on frame structure or a fireplace arranged in the form of a box.

You can use plywood up to 10 mm thick as a shelf, or a thin board made of light wood. As an option, a laminate panel is quite suitable.

Decoration

Very important stage is the transformation of the finished structure into an almost “real” fireplace. It can be done different ways, since the appearance of the fireplace will look the way the master wishes.

First option

In this option, decorative polyurethane foam elements are glued directly onto the cardboard. The mantelpiece is framed on the front and sides with moldings 10 ÷ 12 mm wide.

Beginning of finishing - gluing decorative relief parts

• A thin molding divides the entire surface into separate zones, highlighting the niche of the fireplace.
• Next, individual stucco elements are glued to individual sections of the surface, symmetrically to each other.
• In addition to them, decorative columns can be installed on the sides of the portal.

All elements are glued with “liquid nails” or polyurethane glue.

• The next step is to paint the entire surface of the fireplace, including decorative parts, with water-based white paint. The work is carried out using a brush and sponge in order to thoroughly paint all hard-to-reach places. As a result, you can get a completely white structure.

• Then you need to do additional work on the structure, for example, cover the moldings and stucco with gold or paint of a certain color, which can be made from the same water-based emulsions with the addition of color.
• After the painting processes are completed, it is recommended to coat the entire gable and side parts with water-based varnish. It will protect the surface from various external influences, and also make it more comfortable for cleaning, since dust from a rough surface painted with water-based paint is very reluctant to remove.

Second option

Another option for decorating a fireplace using will give the surface of the fireplace a relief, matching the structure of natural materials.

It’s even easier to make than a wall-mounted one. This will require, in principle, exactly the same materials, and you can decorate it the way the master wants. The above-described polyurethane foam elements in combination with paint and liquid wallpaper, or simply self-adhesive film, are also suitable for decoration.

• Before making a corner fireplace, you need to make a sketch and drawing. In order for it to be accurate, measurements are taken from the corner where the decorative interior accessory will be installed. It is especially important to do this if the fireplace will be placed in a furniture wall or adjacent to it. In this case, it is recommended to make the legs of the triangle equal to the width of the side panels of the furniture wall.
• Next, the fireplace shape is assembled according to the dimensions of the box. If a large box is found, a flat canvas is made from it, and the folds from the corners will help in making a triangle for the corner fireplace.
• A triangular shape is formed from the box, which is secured with masking tape at the top of the corner.
• In order for the triangle to stand well on the floor surface, you need to give it additional rigidity. To do this, approximately 100 mm are measured at the top and bottom corners and cuts are made using a knife.
• Next, a straight line is drawn from the inside that will connect the corner cuts, and then a shallow cut is made along this line. It will help make an even fold.
• Exactly the same process is carried out with the other two sides of the triangle. Then the strips are bent, the excess part is cut off, and the joints are glued together.
• The bottom of the fireplace is made in the same way.

• Next, you need to make a pattern for the size of the fireplace window from a separate piece of cardboard or paper. Then it is reduced on all sides by 70 ÷ 100 mm and the reduced part is cut out. It is placed on the large plane of the resulting “triangle” - the hypotenuse, outlined with a pencil and carefully cut out with a knife.
• Now you need to make cuts at the corners of the window, the same 70 ÷ 100 cm, and then you need to very carefully bend them inside the window at a right angle. The corners of the bend must be immediately sealed with tape.
• In order to make the back walls of the hearth, you will need a corner of the box, and for the ceiling and bottom - two triangles. The inside of the “firebox” is measured according to the resulting opening.
• Cut to these dimensions necessary details and stick together. The finished inner part of the firebox is mounted in the fireplace niche, attached with tape to the bends that were made earlier.
• To make the bottom of the firebox rigid, stands can be placed under it, glued together from several layers of cardboard in the form of columns. Two such details will be enough. They are glued between the lower plane of the fireplace structure and the bottom of the firebox.
• Once the fireplace structure is assembled, you can begin decorative design. In this case, to transform the exterior of the fireplace, a self-adhesive film imitating brickwork was used.
• Pasting begins from the inside of the structure, i.e. from the hearth. The process must be carried out very carefully, trying to follow the pattern of the brick. Then the upper part of the portal is formed, then the side walls around the firebox, and then last resort the film is glued to the lower area of ​​the fireplace pediment.

• Next, a mantelpiece is cut out of cardboard or plywood, trimmed and glued to the surface of the structure, which will serve as an excellent surface for placing decorative figures or candles.

• Next, thin “branches” are rolled out of cardboard, which are marked in such a way as shown in top photo. After the glue has dried, the “branch” is cut into several “knots”, which are then glued to the “logs”.

• When the glue dries, the finished logs are covered with a thick layer of white paint, and then the logs can be tinted to match any type of wood. For example, transverse black strokes of different widths on a white background will make them “birch firewood”, and dark brown stripes along the logs will show that the "firewood was cut" from "oak wood". Gouache is well suited for decorating logs - it is quite thick and goes well with water-based paint and, if necessary, will thickly or translucently cover the white base.

And on top of the cardboard sheets and the baseboard we glue the seventh sheet of cardboard - as shown in photo No. 8 (No. 9 - the table top from the wrong side, No. 10 - carefully evenly glue the table top from the wrong side).

We close all the corners of the fireplace with a special construction corner No. 11. We cut out “bricks” from cardboard and glue them into the firebox, simulating brickwork No. 12. We make an uneven relief on the bricks with putty or ordinary crumpled paper soaked in glue, when the brickwork dries, we paint it in the desired way color. We cover the shelves with paper or self-adhesive film. We putty No. 13, 14 on all sides of the fireplace.

But that is not all! Decorations will bring your almost finished fireplace to perfection. We glue the baseboard around the firebox, we also make it with our own hands: we simply glue three newspaper tubes No. 15, 16 together in a pile. Next, we glue the sheets of cardboard to the finished frame using liquid nails. Then we cover the entire surface with newspaper using PVA glue No. 4, try not to soak it too much - the cardboard will be deformed. In the lower cavity we glue the supporting posts and cardboard on them, then we also glue them with newspaper sheets. Let it dry.

The next step is putty. There will be a lot of puttying and sanding due to the uneven cardboard.

Next, we make the tabletop and bottom: we glue the foam backing for the laminate on the bottom and top of the pva, and on top of the backing we again glue newspaper scraps No. 9. After drying, we glue the baseboards No. 10, cut off the excess from the lid No. 11 and putty. We do the same with the bottom; the plinth can be used without a pattern.

Once again we sand the entire fireplace - finishing. We decorate the portal with narrow plinth No. 13. When everything is dry, thoroughly wash the entire fireplace, give it more time to dry. And you can prime it. Then we paint it in the desired color; after the main painting, the stucco molding can be painted white.

The inner surface of the portal can be painted with white paint with the addition of sparkles - everything will flicker from the candles. That's all, the decorative fireplace made of cardboard on a solid base is ready.

• Glue the border. Decorate it on top with a patterned plinth, as in the first master class. Attach a foam tabletop of the desired size.

• Cut out many rectangles with rounded ends and glue them in rows onto the workpiece with PVA glue - they will create a kind of bricks.

• Prime the box fireplace with your own hands in 1-2 layers so that all its parts are the same color. If this is not done, the fireplace may turn out different colors when painting.

• After the primer has completely dried, paint the fireplace. brown, the baseboards on it are yellow. Alternatively, dip a scouring pad in yellow and lightly dab some paint onto the bricks to give them texture.

• Decorate the fireplace with all sorts of New Year's toys, and place a rolled-up piece of paper in the hearth. glowing garland- imitation of fire.

It will be even better if you replace the yellow paint with gold or silver - thanks to it, your fireplace will simply shine!
