Restoration coffee table on your own - a rather painstaking, but not very difficult task. If you familiarize yourself with the technology, take into account the advice of experts, acquire quality materials, then you can give your favorite thing a second life.

Painting a table is a very complex and lengthy process, but all you need is a sketch, a marker or paints, and varnish.

Remodeling furniture consists of several stages: removing old varnish, restoring the wooden surface, painting or tinting, varnishing (waxing).

How to get rid of old coating?

You will need:

  • scraper or sander;
  • sandpaper;
  • wood putty;
  • putty knife.

Restoring a coffee table begins with removing the old varnish. Easiest to apply grinder, but in this case, extreme care should be taken as the tool may damage wooden surface. You can use special solvents. Here it is important to calculate the thickness of the layer: the product should only dissolve the varnish without reaching the wood. If the solvent is absorbed into the surface of the coffee table, this will complicate all subsequent stages; the materials may not “make friends” with each other, resulting in swelling, peeling or cracking of the paintwork.

The main materials and tools for decorating a coffee table are: acrylic paint, brushes, glue and pictures.

If the old varnish has many cracks and is worn out in places, it can be easily removed using regular sandpaper. Take medium-grain paper, moisten it, wrap it around the block, and walk over the surface. When the sandpaper becomes clogged with dust, rinse it in water and get to work again. Under the influence of moisture, the old varnish will soften and can be easily removed. After you remove the varnish, sand the surface of the coffee table with fine-grit sandpaper. You can clean off the old coating using a scraper or a piece of broken glass. In this case, you cannot do without work gloves. The varnish gradually chips off the surface, but care must be taken not to damage the wood. All these methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Which one to choose is up to you.

After the old varnish is removed, it is necessary to fill all cracks, chips and scratches. The putty is applied using a spatula, leveled so that it does not protrude above the surface, left until completely dry, then sanded with fine sandpaper. If you plan to tint the table with stain, it is better to purchase putty to match the color of the wood.

Toning and painting a coffee table

You will need:

Decorating a table with a mosaic allows you to hide cracks and stains that have appeared.

  • primer;
  • acrylic paint or stain;
  • furniture wax;
  • brushes;
  • sandpaper.

Restoring a coffee table involves painting or tinting the product using stain (wax). First you need to prime the surface: use a special primer for wood, apply the composition with a brush in 1-2 layers with mandatory intermediate drying. If you use stain, the priming step can be omitted.

The paint is applied with a brush; for the tabletop it is more convenient to use a roller or a paint spatula. Hard-to-reach places are painted with a thin brush. It is important to apply the paint in a thin, even layer - then you can avoid sagging. After the first layer has dried, go over it with fine sandpaper. The second time the paint is applied in the opposite direction. All paint layers must be sanded with sandpaper - then the surface will be perfectly smooth, and the streaks from the brush will be invisible.

The table can be restored using stain or colored wax. Stain can be water-based or alcohol-based, the former gives a softer tone. The stain is applied with a wide flat brush (flute). You can mix colors with each other, apply one tone to another, lighten the center, darken the edges - it all depends only on your imagination. Instead of stain, you can use colored wax, which plays several roles at once when restoring a surface. With its help, toning and fixing the result are performed at the same time. By using asphalt wax over stain, depth of color can be achieved.

Rub the wax with a soft cotton cloth very thin layer, in this case, you cannot return to the treated area, otherwise dark places may result. Some manufacturers recommend melting the wax in a water bath for large amounts of work; in this case, it is applied with a brush. After the first layer has dried, it is polished with a woolen cloth, then the next one is applied. This is done until the surface becomes perfectly smooth. If you painted the table acrylic paint, then to consolidate the result it is better to use transparent furniture wax.

Decorating a coffee table using gilding

You will need:

  • gold or silver leaf;
  • shellac;
  • stencil;
  • flat brush.

You can decorate a coffee table using gold leaf, for example, make gold butterflies or silver dragonflies. For this purpose, you need to purchase a ready-made stencil or make it yourself. Draw the outline of a dragonfly on thick film, then cut it out using a blade or thin knife. Attach the stencil to the surface of the table masking tape. Apply shellac and leave it on for a while. The varnish should dry a little, but remain sticky - then the gold leaf will stick well.

Attach the sheet of gold leaf to the stencil, gently smooth it with a brush, leave until completely dry, then sweep away the remaining gold with a brush and remove the stencil. You can dim the bright shine of gold leaf using antique bitumen, which is applied in a thin layer with a foam sponge. The result is secured with shellac.

The potal should not be covered under any circumstances. acrylic varnish, otherwise it will oxidize over time.

Materials for gilding are not a cheap pleasure; if desired, they can be replaced with transfer foil for nails and special glue for body. The application technology is almost the same: first, attach a stencil, coat the surface with glue, and leave for about 5 minutes (the exact time is always indicated on the included instructions). Then apply foil rough side downwards, smooth it with a fingernail, and tear it off sharply. The result is fixed with aerosol varnish - then the foil will not wrinkle. The DIY coffee table renovation is complete!

Furniture that is varnished comes back into use. After all, lacquered products look rich and add originality and solidity to the interior. Although, to be honest, its surface is quite problematic. It can be easily damaged. A very common defect is scratches. You should not immediately get rid of the damaged table, but should try to restore it. This process can be entrusted to master restorers or you can try to restore lacquered table with your own hands.

Restoration technique

Let's figure out how to restore a varnished table using the restoration method. This is one of the most the best ways returning a decent look to a lacquered table. For example, to eliminate scratches, it is necessary to remove a layer of varnish on the defective areas, and then apply a new one. This method is quite effective and allows you to get rid of any scratches. But not only scratches are a problem for lacquered furniture. The next drawback that may appear over time is the darkening of the varnished surface. As a result of clouding of the surface of the tabletop, appearance The table begins to lose significantly in relation to other furniture. This defect can be corrected in a similar way: removing the old layer of varnish and reapplying a new one. This method is quite simple, and it is quite possible to varnish old table with your own hands.

Sequence of restoration work

You can update an old varnished table in several stages. But first you should prepare some tools and materials and think about your safety. So, let’s get acquainted in detail with the algorithm for performing work on restoring a varnished table.

Determining the degree of wear

Before restoring the varnish on the table, you should first assess the extent of the resulting defects.

Choosing material

The question arises, how to remove varnish from the table. To ensure the quality of the restoration, the materials must be selected correctly. Many people believe that problem areas can be removed with alcohol. In some cases minor defects You can indeed use alcohol, but unforeseen consequences may occur, such as roughness, light areas, etc. Therefore, we will focus on specialized materials that will become good helpers for beginning craftsmen.

  • Shellac polish. Such material not only helps restore the surface, but emphasizes its originality. This is one of the oldest and most proven materials. The consistency of the polish is more like a liquid rather than a varnish. To achieve a high-quality result, this composition is applied in about 50 - 60 layers. It is because of this that the original deep color is achieved. This is very good option, which will remove scratches on a varnished table.
  • Nitrocellulose varnish. This solution is used to restore large table surfaces. To apply it, sprayers are used, which provide very fast and uniform spraying. At a lower speed, the solution droplets begin to solidify, and the desired effect of a smooth and uniform surface will be quite difficult to achieve. That is why it is not recommended to use standard spray bottles, which additionally form air bubbles that are almost impossible to get rid of.
  • Pentaphthalic varnish. This is an ideal material for table restoration, as it is quite easy to work with. He doesn't require special devices easy to apply and dries fairly quickly. Apply it in at least 4 layers. You can eliminate the purchase of primer solutions, since the first layer of pentaphthalic varnish will act as a primer. After applying the composition and drying it completely, sanding should be done.

Once with the choice restoration composition decided, you need to pay attention to such a moment as the definition of color. You can use a colorless varnish, or you can purchase a varnish that imitates the color of any wood. In the second case, it is necessary to correctly determine the tone of the varnish.

Step-by-step instruction

Let's bring detailed instructions, which will answer the question of how to properly varnish a wooden table. It consists of several stages:

  • The preparatory stage consists of the following aspects:
  • the surface of the table is thoroughly cleaned using a specialized composition or using ordinary warm water;
  • remove the damaged layer using a scraper;
  • We begin to sand the surface with sandpaper until it becomes matte;
  • clean the surface from dust.
  • Application of water-based varnish:
  • the surface is covered with several layers of water-based varnish;
  • each subsequent layer is applied after completely dry previous;
  • after last layer completely dry, grind the surface;
  • clean the surface from dust.
  • Carrying out work using acrylic-based varnish:
  • initially we select a varnish that matches the table surface in shade and gloss;
  • Having diluted the varnish by 15% with white spirit, we prime the surface;
  • after the primer layer has dried, we perform intermediate sanding;
  • cover the surface of the table with undiluted varnish in several layers, allowing the previous layer to dry first;
  • We perform final surface grinding.
  • Please note that after applying all layers, the surface should be sanded to give the surface a glossy shine.

By following all the recommendations, you can get a very high-quality varnished surface. It is clear that in order to get decent quality you should use a spray gun. Below is a video on table varnishing and details useful tips on restoration.

Updating the table using decoupage technique

Because we're talking about about the restoration of a coffee table, then the most original and beautiful solution it will not be covered with fabric or simply varnished, but updated using the fashionable decoupage technique. Its essence lies in the fact that applications or entire paintings from special napkins, wallpaper, geographical maps and sheet music are glued onto the surface of the tabletop, and then the products are coated with varnish. To execute this work, you need to take care of the materials and tools needed for it in advance. In addition to the above-mentioned paper and napkins, these will be:

  • screwdriver;
  • sandpaper of 2 types (fine and coarse);
  • primer;
  • white acrylic paint;
  • watercolor;
  • acrylic outline;
  • PVA glue;
  • a can of furniture varnish;
  • regular or curly scissors;
  • flat brush (flat brush);
  • watercolor brush.

Before updating, it would be better to disassemble the coffee table by separating the tabletop from the frame and unscrewing the legs. This must be done in order to remove old varnish or paint even from the most hard to reach places. Next, all parts of the table should be thoroughly treated, first with coarse-grained and then fine-grained sandpaper, especially carefully sanded front side countertops. After this, the piece of furniture is bolted back together. The next step The job is to prime the coffee table using a flute and paint it with white acrylic paint. It is advisable to apply at least 2 layers of acrylic to all surfaces of the item, drying each layer well for 5 hours. Otherwise, the paint underneath the varnish may become stained or crack.

Preparing the surface for decoupage: 1. Selection of a pattern; 2. Leveling the surface; 3. Application of primer.

Then the aerosol varnish easily lays on the surface of the tabletop. After it dries, they begin the creative process itself - cutting out decorative elements from napkins. It is better to do this with special scissors. To cut a pattern out of wallpaper or trim edges geographical map, regular scissors will do.

When the applications are ready, they should be moistened with water. In accordance with the plan, the wet wipe elements are laid out on the surface of the tabletop, greased with PVA glue, and smoothed using a flat brush. But it’s better to soak a thick card or wallpaper pattern in water for a few minutes. In this case, the surface of the table in the areas for applications is lubricated with a mixture of PVA glue and water (ratio 1:1). When the glue has dried, you can paint on some parts of the appliqués with watercolors. To make the images look three-dimensional, use an acrylic outline. Finally, the entire surface of the table is covered alternately with two layers of acrylic varnish.

Tabletop using craquelure technique

Along with decoupage, you can age it using a special craquelure varnish, which forms cracks on the tabletop and, thus, makes it “more ancient.” To work you will need:

Decoration process using craquelure technique: 1. Applying color to cracks; 2. Application of craquelure varnish; 3. Applying the main color.

  • acrylic paint of two colors (brown and white);
  • furniture varnish;
  • tassels.

All stages: grinding and priming the surface, preparing applications, gluing them and final varnishing will be carried out as in the method described above. But in the middle of the work process, changes will occur. You will need to apply several coats of dark paint to the primed countertop and let it dry. The surface will need to be coated with craquelure varnish. You should not wait for it to dry completely; the varnish should remain sticky and only slightly harden. Then the tabletop is painted with white acrylic and dried. Within an hour, the product will begin to become covered with cracks, and dark paint will be visible through them. When the acrylic is completely dry, you will need to glue the appliqués onto the surface of the table and finally cover it with furniture varnish.

If you have an old table that needs updating, or you bought a table that looks very boring and you want to decorate it with something, then the tips below are just for you!

In fact, changing the appearance of a piece of furniture such as a table is quite easy. And there are many ways exactly this can be done.

Adhesive tape

Let's start from the very beginning simple way- This is the use of self-adhesive film. You've probably seen this kind of film in stores. It is usually sold in rolls, like wallpaper.

At the same time, it has a smooth surface that is easy to clean and which simply cannot be damaged or deformed in any way.

First, take measurements at home - exactly how much of this film you will need to purchase. Take it a little in excess so that there are no unsightly joints on your table.

The process of using self-adhesive film is very simple - there is no need to prepare the furniture beforehand. You simply peel the film off the paper and apply it to your table, gently pressing it onto the surface.

The table doesn't even have to dry. It will be immediately ready for use in its updated form.

Paint and stencils

If you're willing to get a little more involved than glue self-adhesive film for your piece of furniture, you can, armed with paints and a brush, appear in the image of a graphic designer.

The most important thing is to come up with a theme for your table. Think about what you would like to depict on it? It can be anything you want. If you have the makings of an artist, you can start drawing right away, with or without a sketch.

Note! Wall panels PVC - which one to choose? Photo review best ideas for the interior!

But if you’re into art, don’t despair! Stencils will come to the rescue. You can purchase the stencil in the store stationery or make it yourself.

To do this, it is enough to cut out a picture from a magazine and use it as a kind of pattern, according to which this picture will be transferred to your furniture.

Or trace any of the objects you like with a pencil on a sheet of paper, cut it out and, placing it on the table, paint over the space of the cut out stencil with paint. By removing the stencil, you will see the design on the table.

If you find this method difficult to implement, you can seek help from a professional artist, for whom performing this type of work will not be difficult.

True, the artist’s services will need to be paid for and this method can no longer be called budgetary.

As for the paint that should be used, it must be moisture resistant. Most the best option Acrylic paint is considered. It is odorless and dries very quickly.

In addition, acrylic does not fade in the sun, is resistant to water and high humidity generally.

We can safely say that a table covered with acrylic paint will last you a century, and this will not be an exaggeration.

Decoupage

There is another way to decorate a table, which is very similar to using stencils. This method is simply called decoupage. What is it?

Any fragments of drawings from magazines, napkins, and various albums are taken. These could even be photos from your personal archive or just pictures you like from the Internet.

In general, anything. You cut out the elements you are interested in and place them on the tabletop. First, see if it looks nice. If you like the option and are ready to decorate the table with these fragments, then you can get to work.

The piece of furniture must be thoroughly sanded, paint removed or varnish removed. The table surface must be clean, dry and perfectly flat. In general, it should return to its original appearance.

After this, you take previously prepared elements or photographs, cover reverse side PVA glue and place them on the tabletop.

Such manipulations must be done with each photograph. Then you should cover all the superimposed pictures with varnish.

The varnish will prevent your table from unwanted damage, scratches and other types of deformation. Your photos (decoupage) will be under reliable protection. At the same time, decorating the table will not only update it, but will also delight your eyes!

There are many options for table decoration. Most importantly, don't be afraid to experiment! And you will definitely succeed.
