The lining can be treated with tinting impregnations, painted or varnished. Modern ceilings in apartments are finished with the following types of lining:

  1. Eurolining is high quality expensive board, which is made from high-grade wood. Compared to conventional lining, products with the “euro” prefix are faster and simple installation, resistance to moisture and damage by microorganisms. There are recesses on the back of the board for air circulation and protection from rot.
  2. Shtil lining is very popular because of its beauty and reasonable price. The product has a shortened tongue-and-groove joint, so after assembling the covering, the recesses between the individual elements are almost invisible. The result is an almost even and smooth coating.

Important! Before making the ceiling from the clapboard, a sheathing of wooden blocks is installed.

Ceiling panels

If you don't know how to make a wooden ceiling, use ceiling panels. They are easily and quickly mounted on glue or lathing. In the latter case, self-tapping screws, clamps or nails are used for fixation to the frame. Finishing with boards is convenient because, if necessary, you can easily dismantle and replace one element.

There are two types of panels on sale. Some are made from solid expensive wood. These elements have a mastic coating to highlight the texture of the material. Cheaper multilayer panels are made from inexpensive coniferous wood. Veneer made from valuable wood species is used as a covering.

The advantages of ceiling panels include the following:

Facing tiles

Wooden ceiling The easiest way to do it yourself is to use facing slabs. This finish is made from a mixture of glue and wood chips.

There are several types of such tiles on sale:

  • fibreboards in their structure, in addition to sawdust, contain plant fibers;
  • particle boards consist of glue and sawdust;
  • MDF boards are made from tiny sawdust, joined together with lingine.

Plywood

This material is used in various construction work. It is also suitable for finishing ceiling surface. Plywood consists of several layers of wood veneer, connected so that the fibers in each layer are in a mutually perpendicular direction.

Important! Use elite grades of plywood for ceiling cladding. They have middle layers made from cheap pine wood. Such plywood is lined with beech, alder, maple or birch veneer.

Depending on the purpose of the room, the following types of plywood are used:

  1. For places with high humidity, moisture-resistant products and laminated boards are suitable.
  2. For living rooms They use ordinary sheets that have 3-5 layers of wood veneer.

The ceiling batten is sometimes called “lining under the timber”. This is an inexpensive finishing material, similar to lining, but much wider and with rounded edges. The slats are made from the wood of the most different breeds, deciduous and coniferous. Larch is very suitable for residential premises; it is durable and inexpensive. Rail width 130–200 mm, standard length 3 m and 6 m, thickness 18–20 mm.

The ceiling rail is wider than the lining and looks more unusual

  • Lining

The ceiling can be finished with regular lining or eurolining. These are thin sheathing boards that fit tightly together using grooves and tenons. Typical sizes: width 74–150 mm, length 2–3 m, thickness 12–25 mm.

According to its shape, the lining is divided into regular and block house, made in the form of a semicircular segment of a log. In most cases, a block house is used for exterior finishing houses.

Both lath and lining are suitable for construction slatted ceiling closed type, without cracks or gaps.

Lining painted white

Quality classification

Based on quality, these lumber are divided into classes.

Advice. Extra class cannot be used in wet rooms without treatment with moisture-repellent compounds, because knot-free lining is made by gluing and does not withstand use in damp conditions. On the contrary, it is completely suitable for residential premises.

Block house and lining different sizes. At the bottom - wooden slats with rounded chamfer

However, on sale you can find knot-free, but not glued, linden and aspen lining, suitable for a bathroom or home sauna without any pre-treatment.

You can make a wooden ceiling from slats or clapboards yourself. You will need a hammer drill, a jigsaw, laser level and small fasteners: screws, wood screws, dowels.

Important. To suspended ceiling held securely, it is necessary to purchase only high-quality small fasteners. The fastener should not be too short.

Claymer - the protruding part is inserted into the groove of the board, the gluer itself is screwed with self-tapping screws to the sheathing

Lathing

The lathing for a wooden ceiling is also made of wood (slats or bars), you can also assemble a frame from metal profile, which is used for installing plasterboard ceilings. The sheathing is mounted directly on the floor slabs and leveled using spacers.

The distance between the frame bars is 60–70 centimeters. On the block, the fasteners are located with the same spacing. The outermost bars should be close to the walls so that the edges of the boards do not sag.

Installation of sheathing completed

Facing

The most technical way is to attach the lining to the sheathing with metal glues - a kind of hidden fastener. The gluer's tendril is inserted into the groove of the board, the remaining outside part is screwed onto the frame with self-tapping screws.

Advice. Since the walls of our apartments are far from ideally even, it is better not to cut the entire lining to length at once, but to do it one plank at a time. It’s normal if there are gaps of a few millimeters between the wall and the edges of the cladding; they will be closed later ceiling plinth.

Claimer installation

Start working from the wall. The tenon of the first board is cut off with a jigsaw and screwed to the sheathing using gluers, with the cut side facing the wall. They continue to lay board after board, the width of the latter is also adjusted using a jigsaw. For the chandelier, a narrow groove is drilled out with a jigsaw, which will then disappear under the decorative bowl.

Finally, screw the ceiling plinth and corners.

This video talks about small but important details work with lining.

Finishing

Wooden ceilings are rarely painted, because the paint will hide the luxurious appearance of real wood with its natural veins. Instead of paint, transparent products are used for coating:

Varnishes can be used to create waxy and other effects, giving inexpensive lumber a sophisticated and unusual look.

Dismantling

Dismantling the wooden ceiling proceeds in the reverse order. This is a quick and easy process as long as no anchors were used during installation. Self-tapping screws are unscrewed with a screwdriver, concrete dowels are drilled out or pulled out with a nail puller. It is necessary to ensure that in the process of removing the boards the wires and other communications hidden under them are not damaged.

Dismantling is not always necessary. tension and plasterboard ceiling can be installed directly on a wooden one, without dismantling it, but the wood is first treated with an antifungal liquid.

A slatted wooden ceiling in an apartment looks luxurious, because wood is a natural, not cheap, and desirable material for many. If funds are limited, you can use plastic and metal slats with imitation wood, which are produced in a very diverse range.

  • wooden lining;
  • traditional plywood;
  • wood ceiling panels;
  • tile materials.

Before making a wooden ceiling, you need to familiarize yourself with the features and characteristics of each material. This will make it easier to choose a suitable ceiling covering.

Wooden lining

Lining is a flat board with tongue-and-groove joints along the longitudinal ends. Board finishing is used indoors for various purposes. It is appropriate on a balcony, loggia, attic, steam room, kitchen, living room or terrace. Lining is made from different types of wood, which gives the product certain characteristics. The covering of this board can be painted, varnished, or tinted with stain.

The following types of lining are used to finish the ceiling:

  1. Shtil lining is considered the most popular. It is valued at an affordable price and allows you to obtain a uniform coating without visible gaps between the elements. The solidity of the coating is achieved thanks to the shortened flanges of the tongue-and-groove lock.
  2. In contrast, eurolining has longer flanges, so the recesses between the individual boards are visible on the ceiling. High-quality wood is used to make this lining, so the surface is resistant to moisture, damage by mold and rot, and is also easy and quick to install.

The lining can be attached directly to the base or to load-bearing frame. To ensure air circulation behind the trim when frameless installation, shallow longitudinal cuts are made on the back side of the board.

If you choose frame technology installation of the lining, then before making the covering, install a sheathing of bars or profiles.

Frame installation technology provides some advantages:

  • no careful leveling and preparation of the base is required;
  • the coating hides any defects in the base ceiling;
  • utility lines can be laid behind the filing;
  • thermal insulation material is laid between the frame slats;
  • Built-in lamps can be installed into the surface.

Important! Installing lining on a supporting frame is not suitable for low-rise apartments, for example, Khrushchev-era apartments, because it lowers the ceiling surface to some extent.

Benefits of finishing the ceiling wood panels:

  1. Since the installation is carried out on a supporting frame, the ceiling has all the advantages of suspended structures (hides defects in the base, allows you to lay communications and insulate the room, and is suitable for installing built-in lighting).
  2. Every buyer can find products required sizes. For small rooms it is better to choose slats or square panels, and for spacious rooms Whole wooden sheets are available for sale.

The following types of tiles can be found on sale:

  • MDF boards are made from very small sawdust, which are glued together with lignin;
  • Particle boards are made from sawdust and glue;
  • wood fiber products are slightly different in structure because they consist of plant fibers.

Plywood

Modern ceilings in loft-style apartments can be made from ordinary plywood. The material is made from several layers of thin wooden slats. They are glued together so that the direction of the fibers in each layer is mutually perpendicular. This increases the strength of the material and its resistance to deformation.

Advice! Elite plywood is suitable for lining the ceiling in an apartment. This material differs from the traditional product in that pine wood is used to make the inner layers, and the outer layers are made from high-quality beech, birch, maple or alder wood.

When choosing the type of plywood, you should focus on the purpose of the room:

  1. For bathrooms, kitchens and other places with high level humidity, moisture-resistant plywood is used, which has a protective laminated coating.
  2. For rooms with normal humidity (bedrooms, living rooms, children's rooms, offices and corridors), multilayer ordinary plywood is suitable.
  3. To obtain beautiful ceiling, use polished sheets with a printed pattern.
  4. For utility rooms where the beauty of the ceiling surface is not so important, inexpensive unsanded plywood is used.

Wood wallpaper

You can get a beautiful wooden ceiling without reducing the height of the room if you ceiling decoration prefer wooden wallpaper.

Moreover, depending on financial opportunities you can choose one of the following finishing options:

  1. Paper-based wallpaper coated with the finest wood veneer is often decorated with carved patterns.
  2. You can glue wooden wallpaper to the ceiling. They are made from wood slats 20 mm wide.
  3. Cork coverings are also produced on a paper basis. Glued on top thin layer cork tree bark. Such products are produced in slabs and rolls. To protect against contamination, absorption of odors and moisture, the cork layer has a wax coating.
  4. For the manufacture of TMD wallpaper, wood that has undergone heat treatment is used. These are the most expensive coatings. They are resistant to fire, moisture, and damage by microorganisms. They can be washed. The coating is not afraid of mechanical stress.

Note!

A suspended ceiling will reduce the height of the room by 15 cm, so first we will make sure that this option suits us.

Sheathing fastening

When installing a wooden ceiling on a concrete, brick or plastered base, we will first install wooden sheathing with a distance between slats of 30 cm: you can’t drive a nail into concrete

  • For wooden ceilings with even ceiling beams, we can immediately install the sheathing.
    But it’s not difficult to level the lower end of the beams by attaching slats, and then we’ll nail the sheathing boards to them.
  • We secure each part with 2 nails, driving their heads flush with the board, or even deeper.
    These nail heads should be varnished later to prevent rust. Some craftsmen prefer to fasten with screws.

If you use decorative analogues instead of ordinary nails, this will give the interior a unique twist.

  • In order to reduce the space between soundproofing materials and boards, we use melted cladding.
  • On both sides of the beam we will nail 4x5 cm slats - this is a support for the rough ceiling boards for insulation. Then front side we will sew it flush with the rest of the ceiling, saving up to 20 cm of its height.
  • We can also just glue high-quality glue sheathing to the board sheathing, so as not to spoil the overall impression with nail heads.
  • Scaly sheathing involves sawing off one end of the part according to a special design. And the different arrangement of the boards or their different colour will create wonderful patterns on the ceiling.

In general, there are many options for such cladding, which is very convenient for designers.

Materials

The ceilings in the apartment, covered with bars, slats, boards, and wooden panels, are very beautiful and look rich. But all the parts for the cladding should not be bulky: thickness up to 25 mm, and length from 1 meter to the desired one.

Cladding slabs

There are even samples completely soaked wood wax, they are used to cover kitchens and bathrooms: they are waterproof. And these slabs are not susceptible to dirt, do not delaminate or crack.

Panels

Peculiarities:

  • The layers are glued together at the factory the latest technologies: heat and high blood pressure.
  • Such high-quality wooden ceilings will last for many years.
  • The popularity of the panels is extremely high due to their excellent quality, impressive appearance, durability, ease of care, simplicity and speed of installation.

Wood finishing materials

Peculiarities:

  • Lining, finishing slab or edged boards– traditional and time-tested finishing materials, easy to cover.
  • Heartwood boards are difficult to work with and prone to cracking, but have exceptional water-repellent properties.
  • Boards from the edges of the trunk are much easier to process, and they do not crack.

Wood wallpaper

Wooden wallpaper, environmentally friendly and natural, gives a warm atmosphere to the house, making it cozy and exclusive.

Natural wood is a promising innovation in their production, combining standard wallpaper and panels. Their unique combinatorics have endlessly expanded design possibilities.

Peculiarities:

  • Wallpaper made of veneer up to 1.56 mm thick is made from valuable wood, gluing veneer onto paper wallpaper.
  • Cork wallpaper in rolls or sheets is made from pressed cork. They are not able to absorb odors, create sound insulation and are easily cleaned from contamination.
  • But fire hazards and moisture intolerance limit the place where all wooden wallpaper can be used, so it is impossible to cover the ceiling in the bathroom with them.

Ceiling fillet

Galtel is wooden baseboard made of wood

Peculiarities:

  • Only wooden fillets have undeniable advantages over any others: natural color, unique strength and amazing durability.
  • They strongly emphasize, hiding possible flaws in our work.
  • Modern fillets are exquisite and varied in shape.
  • Their length is up to 120 mm - this significantly reduces the number of joints.

There are 2 types of fillets:

  • veneered;
  • laminated.

We fasten them with self-tapping screws with decorative plugs, as well as clips, nails, or glue them with “liquid” nails.

Issued various types fillets from different species, and each has its own advantages.

  • Pine ceiling fillet, soft, pliable machining, which gives scope for all kinds of independent decoration.
  • Linden fillet popular for its versatile qualities: it is used from bedrooms to saunas.
  • Alder fillet durable, light and therefore can be painted in any color.

We cut the fillets parallel to the plane. We sand the joint area with sandpaper - and such a connection will be invisible. We install the fillet to the ceiling or wall so as not to deform this part with double fasteners.

Carefully fill the cracks with putty. Having attached it, we victoriously completed the work: the wooden ceiling with our own hands is ready!

Design options

Reliefs and patterns made of wood

  • We can make an original ceiling from small boards and scraps, putting them together into a design you like, planning it in advance on paper.
  • Different sizes of parts and their texture will serve to create interesting and prestigious reliefs: such a ceiling will become a decoration of the apartment and your pride.

Plaster

  • First, let's test the ceiling: it should not vibrate, sag, or wobble.
  • Then we will fill shingles to hold the plaster - 3x15 mm wooden strips 40 mm apart, and attach their top layer perpendicular to the bottom ones.
  • We do the hanging - markings, and mark the desired thickness of the plaster with beacons and marks.

The technology of plastering (basting) involves 3 stages:

  • applying spray to the ceiling up to 9 mm;
  • soil (its thickness depends on the condition of the surface);
  • covering layer of 5 mm.

Stretch ceiling

Stretch ceilings on a wooden ceiling are stretching and securing the material

Installation features:

  • For such ceilings, we install a profile - baguette - around the perimeter.
  • After heating the unfolded canvas with a heat gun, when it becomes pliable, we fix it with the corners on the baguettes.
  • As it cools, the film stretches, turning into a completely flat ceiling.

Note!

For many of us, wooden ceilings are a symbol of prestige, beauty, durability and comfort. Now we know how to make a wooden ceiling that fits perfectly into our interior and matches our mood.
