How to remove a caulk?

Removing an old caulk is not so much a complicated process as a laborious one. What, in fact, is a caulked seam? This is the gap into which finishing works tightly packed sealing material, for example, the same tow. We draw your attention: they didn’t glue it, didn’t screw it on, but “pushed” it. Naturally, it will be relatively simple to remove the caulk of the log house, which, moreover, has served its time, decreased in volume, crumbled. To do this, you will need any convenient tool, for example, a chisel, an iron ruler, a nail, a sharp hook, etc. Take it in your hands, put on goggles so that small particles of the old tow do not get into your eyes, and feel free to get down to business.

The second way to remove the old insulation material is easier, but financially less profitable. You can simply contact any of construction companies performing various dismantling works, and qualified specialists will quickly and efficiently prepare your home for further finishing work.

Whichever of these two methods you choose, do not forget that the caulking should be removed very carefully: not a piece of tow should remain in the seams, which could cause adhesion failure between the wood and the new thermal insulation material.

What to replace the caulk?

After the old thermal insulation material is completely removed, the seams in the wooden house must be re-sealed. Of course, you can caulk the house again, again using tow or flax fiber, but is it worth it, because after a while you will have to remove everything again. It is much more expedient to use special sealants for wood for sealing and thermal insulation of joints, which are not subject to atmospheric influences, are not afraid of moisture and insects, are ecologically safe. Another important plus of sealants is their durability. So, for example, the predicted service life acrylic sealant Accent-136 is at least 25 years old, which means that you definitely won’t have to remove it and re-seal the seams in 3-4 years.
