Kaolin wool consists of mullite-silica fibers and belongs to the category of heat-insulating materials. It is fire resistant and is also used for filling voids in masonry and sealing crevices.

Description

The material is usually sold in rolls. It is made by melting aluminum and exposed to high temperatures in special furnaces. Kaolin wool has been actively used for thermal insulation of buildings for many years and surpasses many other materials in its characteristics. Despite the modern variety of other products with similar properties, it is becoming more and more popular and has found its application in the industrial field. It acts as insulation in thermal devices, combustion chambers, heat exchangers and turbines. The greatest distribution is noted in metallurgy. Also, kaolin wool is used in the manufacture of plates and other molded elements.

The material is distinguished by a high level of sound and heat insulation, resistance to vibration and deformation. In addition, cotton wool has other properties that are not characteristic of many materials with a similar purpose. The insulating agent is not affected by high temperatures in an oxidizing and neutral environment, while the level of stability can be increased through application. Despite this, the main property of retaining heat is significantly reduced in reducing environments.

Advantages

Cotton wool MKRR-130 is optimal for making brake pads, insulating furnace vaults and wall structures. Its minimal weight reduces the amount of time and effort required for installation, and also reduces the cost of fuels and lubricants. Other positive aspects are worth noting:

  • thoroughly cleaned fibers are highly resistant to devitrification;
  • minimum level of heat accumulation;
  • thermal shock resistance;
  • preservation of the original characteristics with repeated use;
  • high degree of noise insulation;
  • not affected by aggressive chemical substances, alkalis and metal melts;
  • inert to mineral oils, vapors and water;
  • the electrical insulation characteristics remain the same even when exposed to high temperatures.

Peculiarities

Refractory kaolin wool is made of alumina based on quartz sand. In a special ore-thermal furnace, melting is performed at a temperature of 1800 degrees. There are three electrodes in the melting zone, while there are only two in the place of production. The blowing technique is used to melt the material, it is based on the effect of special steam, provided there is a pressure of about 0.7 MPa. The ejection nozzle ensures that the entire inflation process goes through. Liquid glass, clay or cement can be used as binders.

Kaolin cotton wool is sold in the form of rolls up to 10 meters long, thickness and width are 2 cm and 60 cm, respectively. It is distinguished by its elasticity, which ensures a snug fit to any structure. Manufacturers today are trying to improve the material by adding additional components, such as yttrium oxide. This improves the stability of the fibers and expands the possibilities of use.

Fire resistant materials

They are made from a mineral base and are resistant to high temperatures, while their characteristics remain the same. They are indispensable in the metallurgical industry for carrying out distillation, evaporation and other processes, creating high-temperature mechanisms (motors, reactors) and parts for them. After use, the refractories are sent for recycling.

Most often, products of this type have a rectangular shape and low weight, so they are optimally suited for various lining. At present, there is a decrease in the production of simple refractories, as more and more attention is paid to the production of special mortars and concretes that are resistant to high temperatures.

manufacturing methods

Materials have a ceramic base, are made of refractory borides, nitrides, oxides and have a high level of chemical inertness and strength. A carbon compound is also often used. Refractories retain their properties when exposed to temperatures from 1600 degrees and are used in many areas where it becomes necessary to carry out any actions under specified conditions. According to the method of formation, products are divided into several types:

  • hot pressed;
  • cast, fused from the melt;
  • plastic formation;
  • cast on the basis of liquid foam slip;
  • sawn from processed blocks or rocks.

    Kaolin wool belongs to refractory materials, since it is produced from natural refractory clays and kaolins or from synthetic mixtures of kaolin and high-alumina compositions. The normal chemical composition of kaolin fiber is in the following range,%: 43-54 A1203; 43-54 Si02; 0.6-1.8 Fe203; 0.1-3.5 Ti02; 0.1-1.0 CaO; 0.2-2.0 Na20 + K20; 0.08-1.2 B203.

    Kaolin fibers are staple fibers and are hardened high-temperature glass. When kaolin fiber is heated above a certain temperature and in a wide temperature range for a long time, deflating, i.e. crystallization, occurs.

    At the same time, the fibers lose their flexibility, elasticity and strength. For fibers with alumina content from 43 to 54%, the temperature of long-term use is 1260 ° C and the melting point is about 1780 ° C. An increase in the alumina content within 43-55% does not significantly affect the temperature and rate of glass transition. However, an increase in the alumina content to 60% leads to a lower degree of devitrification than the devitrification of fibers with a lower alumina content. (The economic efficiency of increasing the A1203 content above 55% has not yet been established.)

    The addition of chromium oxides in an amount of 2-5% increases the viscosity of the glass, which delays the crystallization process and, as a consequence, increases the temperature of long-term use of kaolin wool to 1450 ° C. Additives of about 3% of zirconium dioxide contribute to obtaining a longer fiber. Various modifying additives are also used: Na20, B203, Fe203,

    MgO, Ti02, MnOr - The scheme of kaolin wool production is presented below.
