Timing tagging for Chevrolet Niva. Description of timing chain replacement Chevrolet Niva. When to change the timing chain

Niva Chevrolet from the family of SUVs is equipped with a chain drive in the timing mechanism. The performance of the chain is much greater than that of a belt drive. The chain also has the best technical characteristics, which affects the transmission torque. If the loosening of the belt causes the teeth of the pulleys to slip, then the weakened chain will not allow this. But with the operation of the car, the timing chain also tends to wear out, stretch, burst and become unusable, which requires its replacement. At the stage of replacing the chain, it is important to install it observing the labels. This article will tell you what tags are, their purpose and how to put them on the VAZ-2123.

What are tags and their purpose in the Shnivy mechanism

Tags in the timing system on a Chevrolet Niva car are special types of notches and holes that are located on the timing pulleys. The photo shows the pulleys with marks along which the timing chain is exposed.

Marks on the crankshaft pulley

The chain is aligned according to the marks so that it is better fixed and holds the gas distribution mechanism itself. If you install the chain without observing the marks, then the work of the pulleys will be uncoordinated and subsequently lead to their early wear. Therefore, it is important every time you replace the chain or parts of the gas distribution mechanism, install them in accordance with the labels. The timing system may malfunction when the chain is loosened or stretched. In order to correctly set the timing mechanism according to special marks, we will consider the procedure for installing the valve timing on the VAZ-2123.

Installation of phases of the valve timing according to special marks

So, the installation of phases in the timing system according to special marks on a Chevrolet Niva car includes the following sequence of actions:

When reassembling, do not forget to replace the cover gasket!

The work done does not require much time, but it is the key to the successful operation of the gas distribution mechanism parts of the Chevrolet Niva car. In drawing a conclusion, I would like to note the importance of setting the timing chain according to special marks. If for some reason you forgot to set the pulleys according to the marks, then it is better not to start this process and re-adjust. This will extend the life of the timing system and all of its components.

Every detail on a car wears out over time. This also applies to the timing chain. Of course, the chain will last a little longer than the belt, but still it sometimes breaks down. A worn-out belt can break, but the chain develops a little differently, it stretches. The stretch will not be very noticeable at first, but over time it will be severely felt. And then it will have to be replaced with a new one. Here we will talk about the independent replacement of the timing chain on the Chevrolet Niva.

Terms of service and replacement

It is quite possible to carry out this procedure with your own hands. Of course, for this you will have to try, but it's worth it, because replacing the chain drive yourself is not only cost savings, it is also an experience gained. There are no specific recommendations regarding the timing of replacing the chain on the Chevrolet Niva. Simply, after 100,000 km, it is necessary to carry out diagnostic procedures in relation to this unit, during which the degree of wear of the consumable will be detected. The characteristic grinding of the motor will indicate chain wear. Problems with chain stretching are indicated when it is no longer possible to pull it in the usual way and when it is pulled back by half of the tooth. If this happens to your car's chain, it's time to replace it with a new one. The chain will have to be changed even if chips and cracks are found on it, if the marks on the crankshaft pulley and the timing cover do not match.

When the chain is stretched, the pitch increases between its links and the engine will no longer work smoothly, even when the compression is normal. Weak tension will indicate that the chain will fall between the teeth. A loose drive will oscillate, and this will definitely lead to damage to the dampers. The chain will just break them. But the worst thing will happen when the chain falls off the teeth. This incident can only be compared with a broken belt, the consequences will be exactly the same: the valves will hit the pistons and deform them. The cylinders will also suffer from this. Therefore, as soon as it becomes clear that the chain can no longer be tensioned, it must be changed. This article is for those who want to do it themselves.

What is required for this

It must be said right away that along with the chain, the gears will also have to be replaced. The timing mechanism wears out more if a chain is used as a drive in it. If, in the case of a belt drive, the rollers do not always have to be replaced, then the sprockets wear out very much from the chain. Of course, before changing them, you need to visually assess their condition. It is quite possible that they will still be able to serve. But if the sprockets wear out, they will wear out the new chain drive too. Together with the asterisks, it is also necessary to replace the oil seals and other consumables that need it. There is no need to save money, buy everything you need so that you do not have to disassemble the mechanism again.

The first step is to buy a chain. It is better to do this in stores. And when buying on the market, you need to know how to check a consumable. You can check it like this: we put the chain flat and keep it suspended. Sagging more than 1 cm will indicate that they are trying to slip a used consumable into you.

And here's what else you have to buy along with the chain:

  • gears if they are worn out;
  • tensioner;
  • pacifiers;
  • oil seals;
  • gaskets.

Dismantling

  1. First, dismantle the air filter and put a plug on the neck of the carburetor.
  2. We disconnect all the hoses and the air damper cable and take them to the side.
  3. Now it's the turn of the alternator belt and pump pulley. We remove them.
  4. Remove the engine boot and clean the engine cover.
  5. We put the car on the brake and put stops under the wheels. We proceed to further disassembly by placing the car in 4th gear.
  6. To loosen the ratchet nut, you need to put a wrench on it and hit it with a hammer. She's got used to it, and you can't just turn it off.
  7. We dismantle the cover from the valves.
  8. Now the crankshaft pulley needs to be turned. This is done so that the marks on it are aligned with the marks located on the motor casing. The mark on the bearing housing must be aligned with the mark on the camshaft sprocket.
  9. Dismantle the crankshaft pulley.
  10. Remove the cover from the engine, unscrew and dismantle the dampers.
  11. We remove the hydraulic chain tensioner by unscrewing all the necessary nuts for this.
  12. Dismantle the camshaft sprocket and stop. After loosening the chain, remove the small star.
  13. We remove the chain together with the oil pump gear.

Mounting

Be sure to change the frontal crankshaft oil seal. Before installing it, you should clean the seat. The new gland is lubricated and installed with a mandrel. With a hammer, fill the mounting bolt located on the shoe. The bolt is tightened to the stop, while backlash is unacceptable. All new gears should be installed so that all the marks coincide.

We start putting on the chain. First, it should be lubricated, and then put on the crankshaft sprocket. This is followed by the camshaft and oil pump gears. When tensioning the chain, you need to ensure that the shafts are located according to the marks. Install the tensioner and turn the crankshaft, checking the alignment of the marks.

We install in its place the timing case. We clean the seat and apply sealant. Install the pulley and tighten the cover mount until it stops. In 4th gear, tighten the pump pulley nut. We put in place all the other parts and check the operation of the motor.

Video instruction

More and more our site is "sliding" towards diagnostics. Which is not surprising - chip tuning of a faulty car is unacceptable. And the client, as a rule, comes to the "reflashing" with a whole bunch of faults, hoping to cure the car with this mocking.

Therefore, we will consider a seemingly simple procedure for monitoring the timing of the timing, which is necessary when monitoring and replacing a timing belt or chain.

The mark on the crankshaft pulley should be opposite the triangular mark on the engine (photo 1). In this case, the mark on the flywheel should be opposite the triangular mark on the casing. These marks will be visible if you remove the rubber plug at the checkpoint (photo 2). The mark on the camshaft pulley should be opposite the L-shaped mark on the rear toothed belt cover (photo 3).

On 2112 engines, the mark on the crankshaft pulley should be opposite the triangular mark on the engine (photo 4). You can still control it from above. The U-shaped lug on the gear must be exactly in the middle of the triangular mark on the motor. On the camshaft gears, the marks should be opposite the triangular marks on the rear toothed belt cover (photo 5).

When replacing the timing belt on new 16 valve engines, there is no traditional triangle mark. The mark can be seen in the window of the clutch housing by removing the rubber plug, which is not very convenient. You can make it easier by aligning the mark on the crankshaft toothed pulley with the ebb on the oil pump housing, as shown in photo 5 a.

2121 (2104 –2107 )

On Niva 21214 engines (and classics 2104-2107), the mark on the master disk should be opposite the mark on the front cover of the engine (photo 6). The mark on the camshaft pulley should be opposite the low tide on the bearing housing (photo 7).

On Chevrolet-Niva engines, the mark on the master disk should be located exactly in the middle of the DPKV (photo 8). The mark on the camshaft pulley should be opposite the low tide on the bearing housing (photo 7).

On these engines, the installation of timing marks is intuitive, just like on 2112, that is, 2 marks on the camshaft drive gears and one on the crankshaft pulley. In the photo, all the marks are indicated by arrows.

The gas distribution system of any engine must work correctly. If there are malfunctions in its operation, this leads to premature wear of the motor and numerous breakdowns. For accurate timing adjustment, special marks are used, in accordance with which the shafts in the engine are set. We will tell you about the correct placement of marks on a Chevrolet Niva car in this article.

Why are timing chain tags set?

In the engine of any passenger car there are 2 shafts: a camshaft and a crankshaft. In most cars, they are connected by a belt drive. On a Chevrolet Niva car, this is a chain transmission, and a single-row chain is used there. The advantages of this system are obvious: the chain, unlike the belt, never slips on the pulleys and lasts much longer. However, the chain can stretch over time, and the teeth on the sprockets of the shafts can wear out or even break. This will lead to a desynchronization of the camshaft and crankshaft. Their work will not be coordinated, so the engine may fail. Therefore, when adjusting or replacing the timing chain, it is very important to align the engine shafts in accordance with the marks on the pulleys and timing case. It is not easy to do this, since, firstly, the marks are located in hard-to-reach places, and secondly, they need to be set very accurately, since the chain, unlike a traditional belt, will not be possible to slightly tighten if necessary.

How to put an injector on a Chevrolet Niva (with photo)

  1. The car is installed on the inspection pit. Wheel chocks are placed under the rear wheels and the handbrake is activated.
  2. The hood of the car is opened, the fan is unscrewed and removed. The radiator is also unscrewed and gently pushed aside (it is not necessary to drain the coolant from there).
  3. Access to the engine valve cover is opened. Its fasteners are unscrewed with an open-end wrench, then it is carefully removed. There is access to the timing chain and the upper camshaft sprocket. The shaft pulley rotates with a special key until the mark on the camshaft sprocket is aligned with the protrusion on the timing case.

The mark on the timing case is aligned with the mark on the camshaft sprocket

  4. If the chain adjustment has not been violated, then after the previous step, the lower mark on the crankshaft pulley also coincides with the elongated line on the timing case. If this does not happen, there is a desynchronization of the tags, and the regulation continues.
  5. The lock washer holding the camshaft sprocket expands. After that, the machine is put into 1st gear (this will not allow the shafts to rotate when unscrewing the fastening bolts on the sprockets). The bolt 13 holding the camshaft sprocket is unscrewed and removed together with the lock washer.
  6. After removing the camshaft gear, the chain is loosened so that it becomes possible to dismantle the tensioner pulley.

The tension roller is removed, the chain can be removed

  7. The crankshaft sprocket is removed along with a lock washer and a chain. To do this, the fastening bolt is loosened by 13, the tendrils of the lock washer are unbent, after which the sprocket is carefully pulled off the shaft.
  8. If it was planned to replace the timing chain, it is replaced. If you planned to adjust the old chain, then its position on the teeth changes (in most cases, it is recommended to shift the chain on the sprockets in one tooth increments).
  9. After the displacement, the top sprocket together with the chain is reinstalled on the camshaft, and the lower sprocket on the crankshaft. The crankshaft is turned with a special key until the elongated risk on the sprocket is opposite the core of the crankshaft position sensor, as shown in the photo.

The mark on the crankshaft sprocket is precisely aligned with the DPKV core

  10. The crankshaft sprocket now has a lock washer and a retaining bolt that is not fully tightened. Using a key, the crankshaft is rotated 3-4 full turns, while the coincidence of both the upper and lower marks is carefully monitored. If, after several turns, there is no discrepancy, the fastening bolts on both sprockets are tightened, the lock washers are installed in their original places. The timing mark adjustment ends here and all engine components are reassembled.

Consequences of incorrect installation and adjustment

  • There are characteristic extraneous clicks in the engine, which become louder with increasing machine speed.
  • The engine runs unstable even at idle speed.
  • The acceleration time of the car increases significantly, since the engine does not respond well to pressing the accelerator pedal.
  • The set of speed goes in jerks, during which clouds of black smoke can fly out of the exhaust pipe.
  • Valve wear is accelerated many times, and if the shaft out of sync is too great, the valves are deformed and their seats are broken.
  • Incorrect adjustment can also lead to an open timing chain. It, in turn, can puncture the radiator, break the fan and other parts of the engine.
  • The engine constantly overheats, and the consumption of engine oil and antifreeze can significantly increase.

As you can see from this article, correctly set timing marks are the key to long and trouble-free engine operation. There is nothing difficult in this, even a novice car enthusiast can do it. It is important not to rush, follow the above sequence of actions, and you also need to try not to drop the sprocket lock washers into the engine sump. Because getting them out of there will be very difficult.

This item

There is no specific time frame for replacing the timing chain on the Chevrolet Niva. Stretching of the part is indicated by the characteristic engine noise after the car has traveled 100 thousand km or more. If the chain cannot be tensioned in the usual way, or it easily pulls away from the sprocket by about half the height of the tooth, this also indicates a problem.

Phase check can also serve as a criterion for replacement. If the mark on the camshaft sprocket coincides with the mark on the PB bearing housing, and the mark on the crankshaft pulley at this moment is 1 cm below the mark on the front engine cover, the chain will have to be changed. The same must be done when bushings are chipped or cracks in the Niva chain cheeks are found.

Due to the increase in the pitch between the links of the chain, the engine idling will run unevenly even with good ignition and normal compression.

That is why the part needs to be replaced. A weak tension allows it to "fall" between the teeth of the sprockets, creating that very characteristic engine noise. When vibrating, the chain can break the damper, the corner of the shoe, the restraining pin.

If the loose timing chain jumps a couple of teeth, the best news on this day will be the stalled Chevrolet Niva engine. Or, the meeting of the valves with the pistons will lead to serious damage to the engine. It is because of this that it is recommended to adjust the chain tension on the Chevrolet Niva more often and replace it as soon as the tension becomes normal.

What do you need for work?

Internal structure of the tensioner

The chain on the Chevrolet Niva wears out the timing mechanism more than the belt, so the sprockets will have to be replaced. Old gears will wear out the new chain unevenly, resulting in overshoot and breakage. Of course, this is hard mechanical work. But the replacement of the chain is carried out quite rarely, so you can at the same time change the oil seals and gaskets, as well as all accompanying worn parts.

First of all, you need to purchase a new timing chain (timing) for the Chevrolet Niva. To make sure of its quality, lay the part flat and hold it in the air. If the ends sag by more than 1 cm or the sagging is not the same, it is better to refuse the purchase - most likely, the chain has already worked.
