3 types of gasoline power units are installed on the RAV 4 I (XA10) car:

Transmission

Toyota RAV 4 I generation power units are equipped with a manual 5-speed gearbox or an automatic 4-speed gearbox. For reliability, the automatic transmission must be filled with original oil.


The disadvantage of a mechanical box is knocking out 5 speeds. The manufacturer installed substandard synchronizers on some models.

The RAV 4 XA10 was produced with high-quality all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive engages only when stopped. Correct maintenance of the bridges guarantees their long service life.

Chassis

The front suspension of the crossover is independent, such as MacPherson strut, the rear is multi-link. The suspension of the car is reliable, but over time, the following malfunctions often occur:

Generation II (XA20) 2000-2005

  • 1ZZ-FE is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 125 hp and a torque of 161 Nm.
  • The 1CD-FTV is a 4-cylinder direct injection diesel engine with a displacement of 2 liters and a power of 116 hp and a torque of 250 Nm.

All engines were aggregated with a five-speed manual transmission and a four-speed automatic transmission.

All-wheel drive models with a 2-liter gasoline engine operating with 5MKPP and 4AKPP went on sale in Russia.

Chassis

The front suspension is independent, MacPherson style, with a transverse stabilizer for stability. Rear - with double wishbones and stabilizer.

Toyota RAV 4 XA20 is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

III generation Rav 4 XA30

In 2005, the third generation RAV 4 XA30 was introduced in European countries. In Russia, this model was actively sold from 2006 to 2013, until the XA40, the fourth generation, came to replace it.

The remaining 2 types of motors were aggregated with 5MKPP and 4AKPP.

Chassis

Rav 4 has a reliable and durable suspension, the rear is multi-link, the front is of the MacPherson type. Its disadvantage is rigidity and expensive maintenance.

Modification

The third generation RAV 4 is no longer available in a 3-door body. The driver has the ability to disengage the four-wheel drive by means of a clutch.

Fourth generation of the car

Toyota Rav 4 XA40 was released in 2012 in America. It appeared in Russia at the beginning of 2013. In 2015, 4 models were updated, and in 2019, the 5th generation appeared - the RAV 4 XA50.

Appearance

The front end of the Toyota Rav 4 SUV looks voluminous due to the additional fake radiator grill. It is located between the headlights. This part is divided into two identical parts by a plastic bridge.


The rear part of the body has changed. The spare wheel has been moved from the tailgate under the boot floor. The sills and arches are protected with a rubber coating.

Generation 4 cars have three types of power units:

A manual transmission and a variator are installed on cars with a two-liter gasoline engine. Motor 2AD-FTV and 2AR-FE are aggregated with a hydromechanical automatic.

Driving performance is the same as the previous model.

IV generation restyling

In 2015, some updates were made:

  • Front and rear LED lights are installed.
  • The radiator grille and front bumper have been updated.
  • The suspension has been replaced with a sports one with a switch under the steering wheel.

Toyota Rav 4 - V generation

In December 2018, the Rav 4 V generation went on sale in America. In Russia, it is planned to release cars no earlier than December 2019. The standard basic equipment is estimated at 1,590,000 rubles.

Maybe I was wrong with manual measurement? I repeat the experiment. The track is relatively flat, there are ascents, but they are compensated by descents of approximately equal length, so the relief can be neglected. The result is the same: about 8 liters, slightly less. I turn on the "cruise" again, again go out to ten liters, but decide to extend the test section. And things are getting better, gradually the consumption decreases to 7.6 liters, and then to 7.3 liters per hundred. That is, “cruise” and manual mode have an approximate parity.

But this is a track. And what is in our city? For a conventional urban cycle, I take a trip along the Moscow Ring Road with a length of 66 km at an average speed of 41 km / h. The result is almost equal to the highway result: 7.3 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km. Let's make a reservation: almost no traffic jams. In this I was lucky.

We count cubes, we follow the ball

All measurements were taken on practically clean asphalt. Snowfalls receded, and Moscow, as well as Moscow region utilities, worked hard to clean up. Tver road workers did the same, but they did not work everywhere. In the neighboring area, there are many roads that are real skating rinks. The snow is rolled out to a mirror shine. It is sprinkled with sand only in some places, and, as they say, this can be neglected.

Sharp acceleration on such a surface can be accompanied by the chirping of ESP-TCS, but this system on the RAV4 is not too "aggressive". Its influence is felt during acceleration "to the floor", as well as - instantly - with an active start on a loose surface. Neither one nor the other should be done, on a slippery road it is quite possible to start quickly and confidently, without provoking the electronics to delay the car.

The on-board computer produces a colorful diagram of the distribution of the moment along the axles and - a little - along the wheels. The red ball on it almost during any maneuvers flickers around the conditional center, barely shifting to the sides, physically I do not track such a redistribution of thrust. But the shift of the moment forward or backward is very noticeable. Up to 30-40 km / h, about 30 percent of traction is transferred to the rear axle, with an increase in speed - 20 percent and even nothing at all. At some point, I notice the absence of square symbols on the rear wheels on the diagram, it becomes interesting how long this can last. But then the crossover jumps on the bumps, and the rear axle starts to "push" again ... That's it.

When the inter-axle coupling is blocked, the torque is evenly distributed along the axes, 50:50. At least the diagram demonstrates this. This pattern is especially noticeable when crawling on loose snow. On slippery roads, you will quickly exceed the 45 km / h threshold, at which the clutch is automatically unlocked, and torque will again be distributed with front end priority.

An amazing thing: during the previous test, the RAV'ik seemed to me much more comfortable than sporty, then for some reason I did not want to drive it at full speed on winter roads. Now I rush through the snow rolled out to the mirror at speeds of 80, 90, and sometimes 100 km / h and do not feel trembling in my knees. Actually, it feels almost the same as on the new Honda CR-V, even if someone considers the comparison of the two crossovers inappropriate. On "Honda" the moment between the axles is not so unequivocally distributed, there are more different options. Toyota has a simpler scheme, but, quite possibly, only on the screen of the on-board computer. Which, of course, does not convey the full picture of the system's operation.

The RAV4's steering precision is not exemplary. The amplifier mechanism is electric, the number of revolutions of the steering wheel from lock to lock is about 2.8. I would "squeeze" the gain a little if it were possible. But even with the current situation, it is a sin to complain about this device. On the banks too. And, again, on the asphalt, where you can relax and release the steering wheel (as opposed to slippery roads), directional stability is worth praising.

So can Toyota's mid-size crossover be ranked among the leaders? Yes, but only in its class. In the business world, they say: there is always someone who will make it cheaper. So my friend opted for a model of a slightly smaller size class, but in full "stuffing", while the engine and transmission are similar in parameters (150 hp, six-speed automatic and four-wheel drive). For the same money (approximately 1,460,000 rubles, including additional equipment), he would not have reached the junior, front-wheel drive RAV4 with "mechanics". It is not surprising: out of 19 complete sets of this crossover, seven are offered in our market at a price of more than 2 million rubles.

To be honest, such prices seem to me a bit speculative, the company plays on its reputation as a manufacturer of very solid and reliable cars. She has formed an audience, even, perhaps, a class of buyers. For new entrants, it is likely that another business rule is in effect: the so-called high price effect. In other words, a good thing cannot be cheap. However, in the race for leadership, those who rely on cheapness still win. So my friend turned his attention to the "fastest growing" (in terms of sales) crossover. What will Toyota's answer be? What kind of breakthrough can we expect from the new RAV4? When it appears on the market, we will receive an answer to the question of which of the two business strategies is more correct.

The Toyota RAV4 crossover is offered in our market with gasoline engines with a working volume of 2.0 and 2.5 liters and a capacity of 146 and 180 liters, respectively. with., as well as with a 2.2-liter 150-horsepower turbodiesel. Toyota Rav 4 XA40 is one of the most popular crossovers, it was presented at the end of 2012 in America. And at the beginning of 2013, sales started in Russia. The Rav 4 of the fourth generation was updated in 2015, and in 2019 it was replaced by the 5th XA50 body.

The appearance of the Toyota Rav 4 XA40 is a C grade, but how do you like it?

The design of the Rav 4 XA40 seems to be revolutionary in comparison with the models of previous generations, the appearance is more angular, aggressive, rounded washed out forms are a thing of the past. But the appearance was not accepted unambiguously, very few people like the appearance of the 4th generation.

The front of the midsize SUV looks too crowded. This impression is due to the three radiator grilles. The false radiator is located between the front optics, and the real grille is divided by a plastic overlay.

And the headlights, even in an expensive version, look outdated, the daytime running lights are small from zero. The design of the disks is simple, there is nothing more to say about it.

The rear part looks to match the front, the lights are also raised by the designers higher than usual.

The new three-spoke steering wheel fits well in the hands, but the buttons on it are not of high quality, but the Rav 4 XA40 is not premium either. The front seats are typical for Toyota, there is no pronounced lateral support, but the range of adjustments is sufficient to accommodate comfortably.
