As a result, by now, a whole layer of folk signs has formed that allow the gardener to understand without synoptic predictions when it is better to start cultivating the land and sowing certain crops.

  • In the spring, folk wisdom advises taking a shovel in hand already on March 18. No wonder the saint to whom this day is dedicated was nicknamed Konon the gardener. However, the first signs of planting are recommended to be made much later.
  • By May 1 (on Kuzma), folk beliefs suggest planting carrot and beet seeds in the garden. After all, the delicate-looking shoots of these crops perfectly tolerate cold matinees, which are still very likely in May. Besides late-ripening varieties, intended for long-term storage, will take a long time to ripen. Please note that, according to the signs, beets planted in the willow week will probably not be born.
  • By May 5 (on Luka) it is time to plant onions. This vegetable should have time to grow and ripen during a period of not too long summer. Middle lane... But the seeds for a seedling should be thrown into the garden bed as soon as the frogs begin to arrange their spring concerts.
  • Starting from May 6 (on Yegoria), if the weather permits, you can start planting in the open ground those vegetables that are grown through seedlings.
  • Every gardener knows that cabbage is planted in open ground with ready-made seedlings. And here is the day for a timely transfer planting material Arina the hotbed determines on May 18.
  • On May 27, it was not for nothing that they nicknamed Sidor the Borage. Our ancestors considered this day to be good for sowing cucumbers. At the same time, it is worth remembering that the most deadline for this event folk signs consider June 2 (on Falaley).
  • Peas should only be planted when the first leaves begin to bloom on the oak trees. However, it is necessary to pay attention to the wind. If it blows from the north or west, then it is better to postpone the planting to a later date, otherwise the harvest will be small and wormy.
  • Beans are a more thermophilic culture than peas, and therefore folk wisdom advises to postpone their planting date to Isaacia (June 12).
  • For the timely planting of such an important crop as potatoes, the bird cherry will be the best "advisor". After all, knowledgeable gardeners throw tubers into the ground only when this tree is dressed with a fragrant cloud of flowers. Simultaneously with potatoes, it is advisable to plant cabbage seedlings.
  • If one of the careless gardeners delayed planting cabbage in the beds, then according to the signs, the last opportunity for this will be on June 25th. This day is popularly nicknamed "belated skits".
  • Do you dream of growing large and sweet turnips? The best time for planting it, folk wisdom considers July 6 (on Agrafena). However, for an early harvest, it can be planted together with other cold-resistant vegetables (radishes, carrots, radishes and beets) 23 days after coltsfoot starts flowering.

Last year, taught by the hot 2010, the neighbors planted everything they could on April 5 (it was warmer, of course). So what? The seeds lay in the cold ground right up to warm days... And what we sowed a little later, and the neighbor's garden, sprouted crops at the same time, then when the real ripeness of the soil.

It is obvious that the principal in the question "When can I plant?" there is not an example of a neighbor, not the experience of past years (where is the guarantee that the weather conditions will repeat? , the fundamental point in the choice of landing dates is ripeness of the soil
There are several agronomic tricks on how to determine ripeness of the soil:

  • Sharpen the stick and stretch it over the plowed area. If the soil is not smeared, but crumbles, the soil is ready for the start of spring work.
  • On mature soil, in sunny weather, it brightens, 2/3 of the ridges on the plowed area dries out.
  • Take a little earth from a depth of 5-10 cm, squeeze it in your hands and throw it down from a meter height:
    • if the lump falls apart evenly, the soil is ready for processing;
  • if it completely crumbled, the soil has stagnated, dried up and already too late ...
  • if the lump remains intact, and just a little deformed - you have to wait.

As the point "already late" is the most frightening. In the spring, moisture evaporates so quickly, you need to keep your finger on the pulse so that the question "when can you plant seeds?" did not become rhetorical. ;)

When can you plant -

It is noteworthy that the people watched natural changes and have already developed stable folk signs about nature for the harvest.

Personally, we are very sympathetic to the signs associated with plants, trees that grow in a particular area and signal with their blossoming, flowering about the beginning of a new round of development in nature, a new temperature regime... A kind of natural calendar.

What affects flowering, germination:

  • temperature,
  • humidity.

If, for example, a birch grows next to our site, can its leaf blooming be a guide? I think - quite, because all the weather conditions for both birch and potatoes on my site are the same. Moreover, if we take into account these folk signs about the weather for the harvest, then the adjustment for natural climatic zones happens automatically, because the same birch blossoms in every region, in every region at one time.

We are blooming, but in Krasnodar and the Crimea, everything has been sown in the early spring for a long time, and probably has already sprung up. And in the Moscow region, indoor floriculture is still going on.

In a word - it obviously does not hurt to take into account!

  • On a birch, leaves reach the size of a penny - can be planted potatoes, cabbage seedlings, dahlias, lilies;
  • Yellow acacia blooms - you can plant cucumbers;
  • Mother and stepmother blooms - you can plant carrots;
  • bird cherry blossoms — you can squeeze potatoes, beans, beans;
  • Poplar fluff flies - you can plant cucumbers;
  • Forest trees bloom, snowdrops - you can plant for seedlings tomatoes, peppers, ageratum, cloves, geraniums, petunias, asters;
  • Hazel blossoms - sowing of cold-resistant crops in open ground begins. This is a signal that the soil will no longer freeze, although frost is still possible! You can plant sorrel, radish, spinach, calendula, poppy seeds.
  • Crocuses have bloomed - you can plant onions on a feather;
  • Fluffy "seals" on the willow - time to sow lettuce, cabbage, daisies, lupines, annual phlox, mignonette.
  • Forsythia and aspen bloomed - time to sow carrots and parsley, Iberis and Godetia
  • Daffodils have bloomed - we plant early and cauliflower seedlings in open ground, sow peas and beets, sweet peas
  • A violet has bloomed - you can plant dill, parsley, carrots;
  • Cherry blossoms - we sow spices, dill, re-greens, pumpkins, zucchini, squash;
  • Lilac bloomed - annual vines, head lettuce
  • The color of the viburnum is also a signal that it is time to sow cucumbers, zucchini, and pumpkin.
  • Blooming peonies - time to sow cucumbers, pumpkin seeds, sweet corn
  • Leaves on oak - we sow cucumbers, pumpkins, zucchini, watermelons, melons, sweet corn
  • Irises have bloomed - it's time to plant Brussels sprouts in open ground
  • I started a hawthorn - we sow corn, sunflower, late varieties we plant potatoes
  • Chestnut blossomed - we plant seedlings of tomatoes, peppers, eggplants in open ground, sow beets, summer varieties of radishes and radishes
  • The cuckoo is crowing - it's time to sow flax
  • The color of the red rowan tree indicates that it is bold can be planted seedlings of peppers, tomatoes, frosts should be gone.

Do folk signs about nature work for the harvest?

Increasingly, the opinion is heard that folk signs are no longer relevant, they do not work. They say that a significant change in climate took place, in ancient times there were completely different weather conditions, and environmental factors affect the growth of plants, much in nature, if not distorted, then at least changed.

Quite possible. In our opinion, not all signs about nature for the harvest can be treated so skeptically. For example, it seems to me that trust can be given to those listed above.

Well, something like: "Plant cucumbers on Leonty and Falalei"
“Ustina and Khariton are preparing a childbirth for rye, and the martyr Lukyan - for spring wheat”, of course, in our time it may no longer be relevant, because the time of the onset of spring, the first warm days, compared with ancient times, when such signs were drawn up, has changed significantly.

In addition, many agree that the signs and according to folk calendar, and about nature for harvest, are suitable only for flat terrain, so to speak, ideal relief, omens are not suitable for hilly regions.

The best option, I think, would be A complex approach, and agronomic techniques for determining soil on ripeness, and folk signs about nature for the harvest.
