How to remove vinyl wallpaper from walls

Method I

Stage 1 - perforation

If simple paper wallpaper It’s enough just to get it wet to remove it, but with vinyl it’s more difficult. The fact is that vinyl wallpaper for walls has a durable moisture-resistant coating and it will not be easy to wet it with water. This will take a lot of time and effort. Therefore, first of all, you need to break the vinyl upper layer so that water easily penetrates under the wallpaper and dissolves the adhesive layer. To do this you will need a spiked roller or wallpaper tiger. They can easily perforate wallpaper without damaging the wall surface.

Stage 2 – moisturizing

You can simply wet the wallpaper warm water or water with the addition of a special liquid, which will quickly saturate the wallpaper and dissolve the adhesive layer. Such special means do not pose a threat to human health and can be used inside closed premises. Apply water with a roller, a regular sponge or using a spray bottle.

Stage 3 – removal

Vinyl wallpaper begins to be removed from the wall only when it is well saturated with moisture. However, do not overdo it with the amount of water so as not to damage the floor surface and not to wet the wall too much. Subsequent work can only be carried out after the walls are dry. Remove the wallpaper from bottom to top, removing remaining pieces with a spatula. Moisten islands that are difficult to remove with water again and clean with a spatula. For work, choose a wide wooden or metal spatula.

Method II

There is another way: To do this, you will need a steam generator or an iron with steaming capability. After destruction front side treat the wallpaper with steam and after a while remove it with a spatula. The principle of operation is that wallpaper glue swells under the influence of steam and is easily removed from the wall. In addition, without water there is less dirt.

Method III

For difficult cases, when the wallpaper is difficult to remove, add a little wallpaper glue to the water with a special wallpaper remover. Cover the wall with the resulting mixture and leave for 2-3 hours. After this, the wallpaper is removed in solid strips without breaks. There is no need to scrape them off piece by piece.

Some advise using regular detergents instead of a special liquid. This should not be done, as it can ruin the layer of putty or plaster. In addition, there is a risk that a layer of powder will remain on the surface of the walls and may deteriorate the properties of the adhesive when it comes into contact with the wall.

Difficult cases

Difficult cases arise when, instead of special glue for vinyl wallpaper, another glue was used that does not dissolve under the influence of water or a special agent, for example, PVA. Here you need to arm yourself with a sharp spatula and manually scrape off the remaining wallpaper or use grinder with coarse skin. A drill with a special attachment in the form of a round metal brush is also suitable.

If the wall is made of plasterboard

How to remove vinyl wallpaper from plasterboard walls without damaging its top layer? Ordinary gypsum board deteriorates from moisture, so do not overdo it with water. Using a wallpaper remover, carefully using a spatula, remove the old wallpaper.
Modern views glue can be removed easily. If the vinyl wallpaper was glued with PVA glue or other glue not intended for this purpose, the drywall will need to be replaced.

In order for newly pasted wallpaper to serve for a long time, you need to be patient and carefully remove the old ones. After freeing the walls from the old wallpaper, do not rush to glue new ones. Let the walls dry, apply a primer. If the walls are uneven or damaged, you will need plaster and putty to level them. Cover the walls with a primer over the plaster. This preparation will make it easier to stick the wallpaper and make it easier to remove it during the next renovation.

Classic paper and washable vinyl wallpapers fit into any interior. The finishing material is inexpensive and looks good on the walls and ceiling. Fills rooms with comfort and creates a unique atmosphere. But when it comes time to update the renovation, wallpaper makes apartment owners nervous. Both paper and vinyl varieties are firmly glued to plaster or concrete surface. How to save time and quickly clean walls?

Preparatory stage

It is impossible to remove the finishing material without dust and crumbling plaster. Furniture from the premises where renovations will take place is moved to spare rooms or placed on the balcony. Massive cabinets, sofas and other objects are moved to the center and covered plastic film. The floor is covered with old newspapers, and the baseboards are sealed with wide construction tape.

It is advisable to turn off the power to the apartment. Hiding under the wallpaper electric wires, which can easily be touched with a spatula or wet, causing a short circuit.

You can’t do without a stable stepladder, convenient old shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. A drill with a sanding attachment, sandpaper, and a bucket will come in handy warm water and glue packaging.

Spatula and kitchen knife

Finishing coatings that are more than 6–7 years old can be handled with tools with a sharp blade. Old wallpaper separates from the walls on its own due to dampness and time. You need to find the swollen areas, pry off the peeling paper kitchen knife or the edge of a spatula, and then pull slowly. Paper varieties become frayed, so they should not be tugged sharply. Pieces that have become embedded in the plaster are pryed off with a wide spatula. Islands that could not be separated from the base are treated with water or a grinding machine.

Vinyl and non-woven options are easier to remove. The canvas with a water-repellent coating is cut in the middle and the edges are lifted with a spatula. Pull the bottom half with your hands, then remove the top, and clean off the remaining paper base with a brush with stiff bristles.

Attention: Do not rub the plaster or concrete wall, especially in old houses and apartments. The material crumbles and falls off, leaving holes and dents. You have to spend extra time and money on priming and leveling the walls for new wallpaper.

Water procedures

Fresh finishing fabric, which is up to 4–5 years old, is pre-soaked. The liquid dissolves the glue and softens the paper, protecting the plaster from destruction. Warm will do or hot water.

Wallpaper with a water-repellent coating is treated with a roller with sharp spikes. If you don’t have such a tool at home, a regular knife will come in handy. Using a sharp blade, make wide cuts around the entire perimeter. The more holes, the easier it is for liquid to seep into the paper layer.

Special solutions can handle wallpaper that ordinary water could not soften. The canvas glued to the wall using PVA is treated with laundry soap. The detergent bar is crushed and poured into a pan. Pour in 3–4 liters of water and, stirring, bring to a boil. A roller or foam sponge is moistened in the hot workpiece. Soak the finishing material in the liquid and wait 20 minutes for the soap to take effect.

Canvases with water-repellent properties soaked in a solution made from fabric softener. Add 200–300 ml of the chemical component to a bucket of liquid. The concentration increases if there are several layers on the wall finishing material.

Construction adhesive and PVA will dissolve table vinegar. Connect the bucket hot water and 400 ml of product. Add shavings from laundry soap, if the plaster is very crumbly, and the wallpaper is literally ingrained into the base.

The solution is applied to 1.5–2 square meters. m. finishing material. You cannot treat the entire room at once, because part of the room will dry out, and you will have to repeat the impregnation to clean the walls of wallpaper. Water softens the paper base of rolls in 20 minutes, solutions work twice as fast.

Apply the liquid product with a paint roller, soft cloth or large foam sponge. Wallpaper in old houses is sprayed with a spray bottle so that less liquid gets on the walls. If you apply too much water, it can soften the plaster and putty.

The moistened canvases are pryed with a spatula with a wide blade. The remaining pieces are sprayed with a spray bottle and cleaned off with sandpaper with a water-repellent coating or wire brush. Choose varieties with stiff bristles.

The remains of wallpaper and plaster are immediately swept into a heap so as not to trample dirt into the floor. It is advisable to wipe walls treated with soapy water with a sponge dipped in clean warm water. The liquid will remove any remaining powder and fabric softener. Household chemicals absorbed into concrete base and interacts with the glue, worsening its properties. New wallpaper will not adhere well and may swell and fall off on the first day.

Steam cleaning

High-quality glue that could not be dissolved with water is steamed with an iron. You will need a sheet or thin towel, a bucket of water and an assistant to hold the fabric:

  1. The rag is dipped into a container with liquid, twisted and applied to the wall, covering pieces of finishing material.
  2. The iron is turned on and set to the maximum temperature.
  3. Iron the sheet several times with a hot device.
  4. The rag is removed and the remaining wallpaper is quickly removed with a spatula.

The paper web is softened with a steam generator or steam cleaner. Household varieties will be useful on the farm. The devices remove dirt from outer clothing and upholstered furniture. Construction steam generators have limited functions, so such equipment is purchased by renovation professionals.

Use a steam cleaner to iron the wall, placing a clean, dry sheet under the device. If you do not use a rag, dust and dirt will get into the equipment, which can cause breakdowns.

Working with paper wallpaper is easier. Ironed it and took it off. If you are going to steam vinyl or non-woven varieties, it is recommended to first remove the water-repellent film and then turn on the iron. Paper particles that cannot be removed in this way are scraped off with coarse sandpaper or a spatula.

Hot steam penetrates the putty, so the cleaned walls are dried for several days, and then primed and painted or new wallpaper is glued. If finishing material is applied to a damp base, mold will appear.

Special formulations

People who don't have time to scrape and steam are advised to buy an instant wallpaper remover. The product is sold in construction stores. It is usually a powder or thick jelly that needs to be diluted with water. The most popular are Atlas Alpan and Quelyd Dissoucol.

The roller is moistened in a solution prepared from the powder and the wallpaper is treated. Small cuts are made on canvases with a water-repellent coating. The product will need 2-3 hours to dissolve the glue and soften the paper layer. The wallpaper will begin to peel away from the concrete base on its own. The canvases are lifted with a spatula or by hand and torn off from the wall.

Manufacturers claim that the solvents are safe and do not emit toxic fumes, but it is better to work with rubber gloves. Make sure that the product does not come into contact with exposed skin and mucous membranes.

Wallpaper pasted in several layers is treated with a special solution. Not only powder, but also glue is added to the water so that the mass becomes thick, like jelly. This product is better absorbed and softens all paper bases.

Unusual options

Liquid wallpaper is one of the best inventions of mankind. The finishing material does not need to be scraped or torn off. The walls are sprayed hot water and wait 2 hours. Wallpaper gradually absorbs moisture and swells. Some areas fall off on their own, others can be easily removed with a wide spatula.

Glass wallpaper cannot be removed without special removers. The finishing material is treated with the solution and left for several hours. When the canvases swell, arm yourself with a spatula or kitchen knife and clean the wallpaper from the walls. After the procedure, the concrete base is dried, puttied and primed.

Non-woven and vinyl wallpapers do not have to be completely removed. Only the top layer with water-repellent properties is peeled off. The paper bottom is left if the walls are smooth, without cracks or holes. New canvases are glued on top of the old wallpaper.

Drywall

Concrete walls are not afraid of water and sanding machines. Plasterboard partitions covered with a paper layer. You cannot remove it, otherwise you will have to throw away the old slabs and buy new finishing material.

Cheap construction adhesive will help remove wallpaper from the plasterboard base. Several packages of powder are diluted with warm water. Stir to avoid lumps and apply the thick mixture onto paper or vinyl sheets. Leave for 3-4 hours. The product dries slowly, absorbing into the wallpaper. They swell and get wet, so they are easily separated from the drywall.

The glue should be thick so that it does not spread all over the wall. The solution is applied thin layer, otherwise it will be absorbed into the drywall. Sometimes a little primer is added to the workpiece. The product will make the wallpaper dissolving liquid viscous. The solution will dry more slowly, plus the primer will prepare plasterboard walls for further repair work.

If there is old wallpaper from grandma's time in the closet, do not throw away the rolls. The canvases are cut and glued to walls treated with glue and primer. Old wallpaper softens and sticks to the top layer. You just need to pull the edge of the canvas and the walls will become clean. You don't have to take out a spatula and turn on the drill.

In apartments built in the 50s or 60s, it is recommended to remove only the top layer of wallpaper. Let the rest stay. The walls in old apartments are thin and uneven, so light redecorating may turn into large-scale construction work.

Thin paper sheets, which could not be peeled off with water and special solvents, are cleaned with a drill. A brush with iron bristles is put on the tool and the concrete base is polished. Irregularities remaining after removing the wallpaper are recommended to be sealed with acrylic putty. It is inexpensive and high quality, suitable for leveling walls. The putty is applied with a stiff spatula made of of stainless steel so that it lies flat on the base.

Plasterboard boards will have to be replaced if the wallpaper is glued with PVA. In this case, neither a solvent, nor a sharp spatula, nor a drill with a grinding attachment will help.

Modern washable wallpaper is easy to apply and remove. With old paper varieties you will have to tinker, but solvent and sandpaper will solve the problem. The main thing is not to forget to dry and prime the walls after removing the finishing material, so that the new wallpaper fits well and lasts for many years.

Video: how to remove old wallpaper correctly and quickly

To create an even decorative wall covering, you need to know how to get rid of the old one, including how to remove vinyl wallpaper.

Before moving on to this issue, it is necessary to consider what vinyl wallpaper is.

Main positive quality This material is suitable for washing walls.

Vinyl wallpaper is produced on paper and non-woven bases.

The structure of this material is similar to a pie: the top layer of the “pie” is vinyl, the second layer is plastic with a porous structure, and the bottom layer is the base.

Thanks to this structure, which allows you to hide all the unevenness of the wall, when removing wallpaper you need to take this into account, that is, for a new decorative coating you will have to level the walls, or repair all chips, small cracks, etc.

To understand how to remove vinyl wallpaper without special effort, you need to know that they are divided into 2 types:

  • resistant to mechanical stress and highly resistant (walls can be washed with a brush);
  • durable and highly resistant to moisture.

The first thing you need to do is clean the room, this is done very easily: you need to take out all the furniture if possible or cover it with a film to remove dirt.

The floor can also be covered with polyethylene and covered with newspapers - this is necessary so as not to slip on the surface.

When leaving the room, you need to put a wet rag down so that the dust does not spread throughout the house.

To avoid accidents, it is better to turn off the electricity, and it is better to remove lighting fixtures located on the wall altogether.

As for sockets and switches, the wallpaper underneath them must also be removed.

To do this, the screws are unscrewed (not completely or completely), the wallpaper in this place is torn off, after which the switches are put in place. Thus, the room is prepared very quickly.

To also quickly remove wallpaper from walls, you will need the following tools:

  • A roller with spikes, otherwise called a “wallpaper tiger”;
  • A bucket of warm water. Dishwashing detergent added to water will make removal easier;
  • Foam sponge, roller or spray;
  • Putty knife;
  • To ensure the integrity of the outlet, it is better to seal it with masking tape, which is removed after the work is completed;
  • Gloves;
  • Ladder.

Ways to remove old wallpaper

Ordinary paper wallpaper can be easily removed; to do this, you need to moisten the surface generously with water, give it some time to soak in and begin to come off.

After this, you can slowly scrape it off the wall using a spatula or scraper.

What about vinyl wallpaper that has characteristics such as moisture resistance? Let's look at several ways to remove old wallpaper from walls.

Application of water

In this case, it would be correct to use a roller with spikes (wallpaper tiger). If these tools are not available, then you can take a regular knife or a metal brush, which will be less convenient.

After the first layer of wallpaper “pie” has been damaged, all old wallpaper is generously moistened with water.

You can do this with plain water, or you can add impurities, for example, dishwashing detergent or a specialized liquid.

Additives are needed to make wallpaper glue dissolve faster and easier.

To wet the surface, use a roller, a sponge, or do this with a spray bottle; you can also use a regular rag.

You shouldn’t overdo it with water, so as not to damage it. flooring and walls.

Once the material is saturated, you can begin removal. It is better to remove old wallpaper from the bottom up. The remaining pieces of material are removed with a spatula.

If they do not give in easily, they are moistened again with water and then removed.

If the base layer of vinyl wallpaper is firmly glued to the wall and does not come off, then it can be left (provided that it is held securely).

Using steam

The second method is to use steam. To do this, you will need a steam generator; you can use an iron equipped with a steam function.

When using this method, it is also necessary to perforate the top layer, and only then proceed with steam treatment.

Under the influence of steam, the glue begins to swell, the wallpaper can be quickly removed from the wall. It should be noted that this method allows you to clean the walls not only quickly, but also without diluting the dirt.

As alternative option You can use a wet cloth and an iron. The walls are ironed using a rag (soaked!). The effect will be the same as from steam.

Using wallpaper glue

The third method is that not only a specialized liquid for removing vinyl wallpaper is added to the water, but also not a large number of glue.

This method is used in situations where old wallpaper “does not want” to be peeled off the walls. Cover the walls with the resulting solution and leave them in this state for a couple of hours, maybe three.

Such actions will allow you to remove the old wallpaper in solid strips.

Why do they arise? similar situations? This happens because a different wallpaper glue was used when gluing. There is a special adhesive for vinyl wallpaper.

Remove wallpaper in severe cases You can also use a wire brush, a grinder or sandpaper (this method is the most labor-intensive).

This must be done carefully so as not to damage the wall.

Plasterboard walls

How to remove old vinyl wallpaper if the walls on which they were glued are made of plasterboard?

It should be noted that this material does not tolerate moisture well, even when used moisture-resistant plasterboard Excessive moisture can injure it.

You need to be very careful when removing old wallpaper from a plasterboard wall: they are first perforated and also moistened with water, but there is no need to overdo it here.

It is better to use special means to remove the old vinyl covering. General technology removal from a plasterboard wall remains the same as when using water.

If the wallpaper was pasted on a special (under vinyl material) glue, then dismantling will be easy.

Also, problems with removal will not arise if the drywall has been puttyed beforehand.

Wallpaper with a non-woven backing will be easier to remove, because it can be peeled off (the top layer, which does not allow moisture to pass through, can be pryed off with a knife or spatula and peeled off); the base can be easily removed by soaking.

There may be cases when PVA glue was used for gluing. Here, no matter how careful you are, you will not be able to maintain the integrity of the drywall.

Watch the video to better understand how to remove wallpaper from drywall.

To the old decorative coating The walls were easy to remove, you need to know some recommendations, and also watch the video in our article.

First you need to determine on what basis, paper or non-woven, the vinyl wallpaper is created.

You shouldn’t wet all the walls at once, it’s the right thing to do small venues. Otherwise, the wetted material may dry out and the work will have to be done again.

“More is not better”: you need to moisten generously, but not overdo it. This rule especially applies to plasterboard walls.

The room must be prepared: heavy furniture has been removed or covered, all things have been moved, the floor is covered with polyethylene and/or newspapers, the electricity is turned off.

Using specialized liquids for removing vinyl wallpaper will simplify the task.

After all work is completed, it is necessary to wash the walls with plain water in order to wash off any remaining adhesive and cleaning solutions.

Allow time to dry, then repair all defects: all holes and cracks are covered, the plaster is adjusted.

If old plain wallpaper they hold up well: no bubbles formed, did not move away from the wall, did not crack, etc., then to update the interior you can simply repaint them in a different color.

Vinyl wallpaper today is considered one of the most popular options for wall decoration in an apartment or private house. They are characterized by a long service life, resistance to moisture and abrasion. Because of this, the material has gained popularity, but these qualities can also become disadvantages during removal, since it cannot be soaked and is very difficult to scrape off. The question arises: how to remove old vinyl wallpaper from walls?

Before removing vinyl wallpaper from the wall, you must do the following:

You should also prepare tools and materials:

  • wallpaper tiger (a roller on a long handle with metal spikes);
  • container for water or special solution;
  • washing powder, detergent or any other surfactant if plain water will be used;
  • brush, roller, sponge or spray bottle;
  • narrow metal spatula;
  • facilities personal protection(gloves, glasses);
  • ladder.

Methods for removing wallpaper from regular substrates

In this case we're talking about about walls made of concrete, brick or wood. Such surfaces can be moistened with water and then dried without any consequences. There are several ways to remove old vinyl wallpaper.

Using water

  1. Vinyl wallpaper consists of several layers, and only one of them is waterproof, so it is necessary to damage it. It is better to use a wallpaper tiger, but if you do not have a tool at hand, it is recommended to treat the coating with a wire brush, knife or any other sharp tool. The main thing is to cause damage as often as possible, then the wallpaper will get wet better.
  2. After this, you need to heat the water and add a little detergent to it, it will ensure deep penetration of the substance into the wallpaper layer. If a special composition is used, it is prepared according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Soak a sponge or roller in the solution and treat the walls. You can also use a spray bottle or regular rags. You should not moisten it too much so as not to damage the base.
  4. Wait about 15 minutes and begin removing the wallpaper. To do this, you need to pry the corner of the strip and pull it down. It's best to work slowly so you can remove the entire piece at one time. Parts of the material may remain on the walls; they need to be wetted again and scraped off with a spatula.

Stages of removing wallpaper using water

On a note! The easiest way to remove products in this way is on paper based, with other types there may be difficulties.

Using steam

This operation will require an iron or a steam generator; the wallpaper delaminates due to the action of hot steam on the top layer of vinyl. In the first case, you need to moisten a rag with water, lean it against the wall, press a hot iron against it and hold it for a few seconds. Then repeat the process further down the strip and so on until the very end. If the wallpaper begins to peel off, you can pry it off and remove it; if not, you need to go through it again.

It is much easier to work with a steam generator. The device is filled with water and turned on at maximum power. You should bring it closer and treat the wall with steam in the same way as with an iron. This is the most clean way removal of wallpaper, after it there are practically no fragments of material left, no dust or other contaminants are formed. In addition, it can be used to quickly and easily remove non-woven products.

Removing Vinyl Flooring Using Steam

Important! Using heating devices You need to think about safety; you should work with gloves and a respirator.

With glue

In this case, into the water with detergent It is necessary to add a small amount of wallpaper glue; it will prevent premature drying of the composition and will help to distribute the product evenly over the surface. The material is applied in the same way as any other substance, but left for 3 hours. During this time, the wallpaper will have time to get wet and will come off the wall in solid sheets. This method is also especially effective in the case of paper-based products.

Using a spatula

This method is perfect if the wallpaper was pasted in several layers or there are newspapers or paper under it. In this case, a rather thick cake forms on the wall; you can simply pry it off with a spatula without any preliminary preparation. If fragments of material remain on the surface, it is better to soak them with warm water and go through them again with a spatula.

Layer-by-layer removal

The technology involves removing the top vinyl layer with any sharp or rubbing means at hand. You can try to scrape it off with a spatula or a wire brush; even a dish brush will do. After removing the layer, proceed as described above - moisten with water and remove with a spatula. Residues can be removed with sandpaper.

Use of special fluids

These substances are mixtures of surfactants, defoamers and preservatives. They must be applied to the prepared surface and left for 2-3 hours (the exact time is indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging). The products dissolve the glue, so the wallpaper should come away from the wall without damage.

Using power tools

This method is suitable when all others have proven useless. In some cases, wallpaper is glued to PVA; after drying, the material interacts weakly with other substances, so it will have to be removed using brute force. You can use a sander or drill with a brush attachment. The method is not the most popular due to the formation of a large amount of dust and debris.

Removing vinyl wallpaper from drywall walls

In this case, you need to act approximately the same as in the previous option. But it is important to take into account that drywall is afraid of moisture, so too much water or solution will harm it.

The first step is to perforate the wallpaper, then apply a small amount of liquid to it with a spray bottle. As soon as the products begin to swell, you need to immediately begin removing them so that the water does not have time to reach the base. If ordinary glue was used, then there should be no problems; in the case of PVA, damage to the drywall cannot be avoided.

Before starting work, it is recommended to find out what type of wallpaper the vinyl material on the wall is. IN hardware store will advise special remedy for each type. Next, you need to follow the above instructions and the manufacturers' recommendations.

Before you begin renovations in the living room, you should take care of preparing the wall. It must be freed from old canvases, paint, putty, as well as interior items. It is necessary to glue new canvases onto a prepared surface, without defects, cracks, or protrusions.

Any wallpaper material will convey the unevenness of the walls and look unworthy against the background of the room. Vinyl sheets have been used for many years in great demand, which is why they are glued more often than others during repairs. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever; the time comes to replace them with new ones. The first question that arises is: “How to remove vinyl wallpaper from walls?”

Vinyl wallpapers

As a rule, vinyl wallpaper consists of two layers

In the manufacture of vinyl sheets, the main component is polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Currently, almost all coatings are created on the basis of this material. As a rule, such coatings consist of two layers. The backing is made of non-woven fabric or paper, and the decorative part is made of vinyl.

For materials in the mid-price category, the backing is made of paper, since the raw materials themselves are inexpensive, and outer part The covering is made of foamed vinyl. Non-woven fabric is used to make the base of wide and expensive rolls. A meter roll weighs much more than a standard one. To keep the canvas securely on the wall, use a non-woven backing.

Vinyl canvases have a wide variety of colors and textures

The advantages include the following qualities:

  • average price per roll;
  • diversity color range and relief;
  • environmentally friendly, harmless to environment and to man;
  • coating strength;
  • resistance to detergents;
  • resistance to high temperatures;
  • durability.

There are four types of vinyl sheets:

  1. Foamed. The base is made of paper, the top layer of coating is made of foamed vinyl.
  2. Relief and dense. Imitate natural finishing materials.
  3. Hot stamping. Hot presses are used to produce such material.
  4. Silkscreen printing. The bottom layer is made on a paper basis, and the front part imitates silk.

Depending on what type is chosen for covering the room, it will be selected individual scheme to remove them from the surface.

Preparatory activities

Remove furniture before starting work

Before removing old vinyl wallpaper from the walls, you need to completely empty the room of all unnecessary things. First of all, take all the furniture out of the room so as not to scratch or stain it. It is recommended to cover the floors with plastic film so as not to stain the coating itself.

To prevent dirt from being dragged from room to room, you need to place a wet rag on the floor of the doorway on which you can wipe the soles of your shoes.

To prevent electric shock to a person during dismantling, it is necessary to completely de-energize the room. Then you need to remove all decorative covers of sockets and switches, remove lamps and paintings from the wall. To quickly dismantle vinyl wallpaper, you will need tools: a ladder or stepladder, a needle roller, a spray bottle, a metal spatula, masking tape, gloves.

Removing paper-backed vinyl wallpaper

The easiest way is to remove the wallpaper with a spatula

Before removing the coating, you need to understand what type is glued to the wall and what material the surface itself is made of. In practice, five main methods are used when removing paper-based vinyl wallpaper:

If vinyl sheets are glued to a plastered wall, then using a spatula is not recommended in this case. Since during dismantling there is a high probability of damaging the canvases themselves and finishing layer plaster. The downside of the steam generator is that the tool itself costs a lot of money. If the room is small, then purchasing a tool is impractical, so craftsmen suggest using irons at home instead. household use with vertical steaming.

Removing non-woven wallpaper

The non-woven layer, as a rule, comes off as a continuous sheet

If the wall is covered with non-woven wallpaper, then it is not at all necessary to completely remove the vinyl wallpaper; it is enough to just remove the top decorative layer. To do this, the canvas should be rolled with a needle roller. The non-woven film remaining on the wall will perfectly serve as the basis for pasting new wallpaper. The only caveat: the joints of the canvases will have to be further processed. How to quickly remove the material completely? To do this, you should pick up the corner of the bottom layer of non-woven fabric with a spatula so as not to damage the plastered surface.

The non-woven layer comes off completely in one piece. Thanks to the durable material from which it is made, the canvas does not tear into pieces. If non-woven wallpaper is additionally moistened with water, the dismantling process will be greatly facilitated.

Grease the walls wallpaper glue and the canvas will begin to come off after a while

If vinyl wallpaper on a non-woven backing is glued to a plasterboard surface, then it is worth considering that the plaster will collapse if you try to wet it. Therefore, the method of surface treatment with liquid is not suitable for such walls. The optimal methods would be to steam off the adhesive composition, as well as using special means.

The cheapest and most proven solution is wallpaper glue. They need to lubricate the entire surface plane. After a short amount of time, the material will begin to open and move away from the wall. This way you can easily and quickly remove vinyl wallpaper from drywall.

As an alternative replacement wallpaper glue, use the remaining soil deep penetration. It takes a long time to dry, so it will completely saturate all layers of vinyl wallpaper and soften the glue. If vinyl sheets are glued to plaster using PVA glue, then dismantling should be carried out using any of known methods. The glue securely holds the canvases on the wall; it cannot be removed without damaging the surface. To learn how to remove wallpaper that has been hanging for 10 years, watch this video:

After removing the wallpaper and PVA glue, the surface of the drywall needs to be plastered. Then sand the finishing layer with sandpaper and prime the surface. Only after this can you start gluing new wallpaper.
