How to install a headboard with your own hands

It is now difficult to blame the furniture market for the lack of goods, but the problem is that on the factory production line, decoration of products is not given much importance, and the price of custom-made models is frightening. Let's find out how difficult it is to decorate the headboard yourself and try to create a decent soft headrest with your own hands.

Types of backrests

Illustrations Recommendations

Wooden headboard.

Natural board is considered one of the simplest headrest options.

Knocking several planks into a shield, then opening them with stain and varnishing is not difficult for a home craftsman.

The construction costs pennies, is done quickly, the only problem is that the board is rigid and not suitable for all styles.

Headboard - panel.

Here, on the contrary, we are dealing with the most complex and expensive type of head restraints.

The very definition - a panel already implies some kind of meaningful ornament, which means that the master must have the talent to first create this ornament and then fit it into the interior of the bedroom.

Unlike wooden headrests, the panel can be made of any material.

Mirrored headboard.

The mirrored headrest looks unusual, plus it great way create the illusion of volume in the room.

But mirrored headboards are not very popular, for several reasons:

  • The mirror is more difficult to maintain;
  • The mirror is hard and uncomfortable to lean on;
  • The newfangled trend of Feng Shui does not welcome such headrests.

Key points when choosing a headboard

The choice directly depends on the personal preferences of the owners of the bedroom, so for a creative nature it is more important to match the general style in the interior, but taste is a delicate matter and we will talk about this a little later, but now we will focus on practical side question.

If the owners lie in bed for a long time and like to lean on the headrest to read or watch TV, then the hard materials of such a bed are contraindicated, plus the headrest itself should have a height of 50–70 cm.

The choice of material in upholstered headboards is especially important. Based on experience, the most practical upholstery can be called natural or artificial leather (eco-leather). It practically does not get dirty, and if necessary, it can be easily washed with ordinary soapy water.

Another point is the size of the headrest. You need to choose a bed for a bedroom in Khrushchev without fanaticism; the height from the floor to the edge of the headrest should not exceed 120 cm. spacious rooms With high ceilings There are no restrictions on the height of the headboard.

Interior styles that will successfully complement the headboard

Illustrations Recommendations

Baroque.

The style was born back in the 19th century and is associated with unbridled luxury. Quilted velvet headrests framed by gilded monograms are considered business card"Baroque".

Provence.

This style has the charm of the southern French countryside. Light pastel shades with upholstery bleached by the Mediterranean sun symbolize silence and tranquility.

Art Deco.

Simple and yet original interior. Smooth, strict forms and natural materials. In such a bedroom, Empire style elements can peacefully coexist with African tribal decorations or abstract paintings.

Loft.

Ideally, the “Loft” style is focused on the rough, unfinished finishing of production workshops, hastily converted into housing.

As for headrests, a bed with any shape and type of upholstery will fit here.

Patchwork.

The textile theme of the patchwork quilt predominates here. For a novice craftsman who decides to make an original headboard with his own hands, “Patchwork” will be an excellent solution.

Ethnic styles.

Each nation has its own unique ornaments and methods of decoration. There is no universal recipe here; you need to focus on the interior of the bedroom.

Do-it-yourself bed interior and backrest decor with soft upholstery

If you don't take into account carved options, then in order to do wooden back making a board does not require any special skill; in this case, it is more important to come up with a shape and correctly fit it all into the interior.

A soft headboard is a completely different matter. There are 4 common options here - carriage screed, patch upholstery, cushion panels and fabric cover. I’ll give step-by-step instructions for arranging a carriage screed a little later, but now let’s talk about more simple options. But first, let's decide on the materials and tools.

Materials and tools

All above mentioned options soft upholstery made with the same set of tools from similar materials. The difference lies in the size of the budget, desire and availability of free time.

All material can be divided into types of boards for the base and an assortment of upholstery fabric. For a rigid base, 4 types of shields are used:

Illustrations Recommendations

Plywood.
  • To ensure proper rigidity, sheets with a thickness of 10 mm or more are used;
  • As for the brand, I recommend taking “FK” plywood; it is the cheapest, and most importantly, environmentally friendly;
  • Plywood is also divided into grades; the fewer knots and small defects on the front side, the higher the grade. Since the shield will be completely sewn up, we only need 3 grades (4 grades in total).

MDF.
  • The thickness of the MDF board under the head of the bed starts from 14 mm;
  • There is MDF with finishing and clean boards, it is better for us to take the second option, finishing on performance characteristics does not affect, but clean slabs are half the price.

Chipboard.

The thickness of furniture particle boards starts from 16 mm. But chipboard contains formaldehyde inclusions, so they are pure form not recommended to use. To block harmful fumes there are 2 options:

  1. Buy laminated chipboard, Upper layer laminate will not allow formaldehyde to evaporate;
  2. Paint chipboard board oil paint.

Solid wood.

Usually a frame panel is made from a board 20 mm thick. Since the shield will be wrapped with a facing cloth, there is no point in taking a tongue-and-groove board; it is cheaper to buy planed planks.

The range of furniture fabrics includes dozens of models, we will not list them all now, we will only go through the most popular ones.

Illustrations Recommendations

Velours.
  • Fine-haired, pleasant-to-touch material;
  • Made from cotton or wool;
  • Ecologically pure;
  • The price is high;

Jacquard.
  • Smooth natural fabric with a noble sheen;
  • Most models come with an ornament;
  • The price is high;

Chenille.
  • Thick and dense fabric;
  • There are both colored and plain models;
  • Easy to wash;
  • The price is reasonable;
  • There are models with anti-claw effect.

Flock.
  • The fabric combines cotton and polyester;
  • Does not fade in the sun;
  • The price is reasonable;
  • Easy to clean;
  • It feels synthetic to the touch;
  • Strength is high;
  • Has fine pile.

Leather.

The most expensive natural leather of fine tanning is used for furniture upholstery, so home craftsmen rarely use it; leatherette predominates here.

The most popular material now is eco-leather. In essence, the same leatherette, only High Quality. Good eco-leather cannot be distinguished from natural leather, and the price is several times lower.

To create a good soft headrest, you also need filler and small fittings. As for the filler, in most cases furniture foam is used. For better contact with the facing fabric, the foam rubber is wrapped with padding polyester, although in thin panels the padding polyester can be used as an independent filler.

The carriage version of the screed involves the use of furniture buttons; I will tell you how to stitch and quilt them a little later. From the rest of the accessories you only need a thick nylon thread and glue for placing the foam rubber on the base panel.

The minimum list of tools is as follows:

  • Scissors;
  • Long needles for thick nylon thread;
  • Electric drill or good screwdriver;
  • Colored crayons;
  • Whatman paper or thick cardboard;
  • Metal ruler 1 m;
  • Roulette;
  • Furniture stapler;
  • Pliers;
  • Jig attachment for drill (device for drilling holes large diameter in foam rubber).

Upholstered bed headboard made of rags

Illustrations Recommendations

Soft base.
  • Foam filling must be glued to the headboard;
  • To provide smooth transition The corners of the foam rubber are cut off with scissors along the perimeter (the procedure is desirable, but optional).

Sintepon.

Upholstery fabric does not glide well on foam rubber, so soft pillow It is advisable to wrap it with padding polyester.

Fastening the upholstery.

As it is wrapped, the padding polyester is aimed at the base with a stapler. The pattern for attaching the front upholstery is similar; slightly tighten the fabric and adjust it to the base.

Bed attachment.

Once you've covered the base with a patchwork quilt, the shield is attached to the bed frame.

Some craftsmen screw the soft shield not to the bed frame, but to the adjacent wall at the head, which is also acceptable.

DIY headboard for a bed made from pillows

Pillow headrests can be made in two ways:

  1. You need to secure a strong crossbar above the bed; you can take a baguette for curtains. Next, take real pillows and sew loops to them, after which you hang these pillows on the crossbar;

  1. There are also stacked headrests made from pillows on a rigid base. The arrangement of such pillows is similar to the patchwork quilt described above, only the basis is not a thick board, but a fiberboard plate. When required quantity pillows are made, they are attached either to the rigid headboard or to the wall.

Sew a cover

If you have already purchased a bed with a hard headrest, and you don’t want to bother with the upholstery, there is another way out.

  • Measure the dimensions of the headrest and multiply the resulting result by 2;
  • According to these dimensions, cover the foam rubber sheet with the selected upholstery material;
  • Next, sew 4 ribbons in the corners;
  • Wrap the hard headrest soft case and tie the ribbons together.

Quilted headboard using carriage screed technique

Of all the techniques for arranging a soft headboard, the carriage tie is considered the most difficult. At home, only plain fabrics or eco-leather are used for it.

Preparing the back frame

Theoretically, the shape of the frame can be any, but home handyman It's better to start with a square or rectangle. Finishing semicircular and curved edges requires preparation. Plywood, MDF or chipboard are usually used as load-bearing panels. Typesetting wooden shield upholstery is more difficult.

Hole marking

The holes are marked in a checkerboard pattern, the minimum interval between fixation points is 100 mm. I recommend initially making a cardboard template with hole markings; you will need it more than once later. The diameter of the holes on the shield for the carriage screed is 8 - 10 mm.

We fix the foam and fabric

Illustrations Recommendations

Stage 1.

Using a spray gun or brush, apply glue to the base.

Stage 2.
  • Glue the foam rubber to the base;
  • We wrap the shield with padding polyester;
  • On the back side of the shield, we pierce the pillow with wooden sticks through the holes.

Stage 3.

We take out the sticks one by one and drill through holes in the foam rubber using a jig.

Stage 4.

Using a paper template, we transfer the markings onto the canvas. Here it is better to use colored chalk, because the marker can then appear on the canvas.

Stage 5.

We tighten the fabric through the holes with a nylon thread, and shoot the tails of the thread from the back side to the shield at 3 - 4 points in a zigzag.

Conclusion

The instructions for the carriage screed described above are not complicated, but in practice the work requires attention, so if you do not have the time or desire, it is better to stick to the simple options I have given. If after studying the material and watching the video in this article you still have questions, write in the comments, I will try to help.

The bed is the main piece of furniture in the bedroom. Installing or updating a headboard will help transform the overall arrangement of the room and give the room more coziness and comfort. Despite the numerous varieties of these products in the store, you can make a soft headboard for a bed with your own hands; there are many ways, and the costs are minimal.

Types of products

The structures will help not only improve the quality of rest, but also protect the wall from rubbing, which will allow you to preserve the freshness and beauty of the finish for a long time. You can make a soft headboard for a bed with your own hands in several types:

  • soft;
  • figured;
  • carriage tie;
  • using shreds;
  • from pillows.

Upholstered headboard for bed

This option is very simple to implement and anyone can do it without much difficulty. In order to make a soft headboard, you need to prepare:

  • a piece of plywood (the shape can be rectangular, round and other options);
  • thick fabric;
  • foam;
  • construction stapler.

At the first stage you need to take plywood sheet and put 2 layers of foam on it. Then we put thick fabric on the plywood and foam rubber so that the material extends 10-15 cm beyond the edges, then secure it with a stapler. It is preferable to select shades and patterns based on the arrangement of the bedroom. Thus, in 2-3 hours you can transform your bedroom with a rather original and elegant element.

Curly headboard for bed

This type of construction will also be soft, but have a special relief. To make it you need to prepare:

  • plywood sheet;
  • soap or chalk - for marking the fabric;
  • foam;
  • construction adhesive, mostly universal;
  • stapler;
  • furniture nails;
  • upholstery fabric;
  • unnecessary material.

First, we make a sketch on which drawings and markings will be made. Afterwards, blanks are cut out of plywood, fabric and foam rubber. The foam rubber is glued to the plywood; for greater reliability, the edges are secured with a stapler. The same manipulations are done with the fabric.

The head of the bed is placed in a horizontal position, and the fabric is carefully stretched using staples on the back side. On the back side of the fabric you need to make cuts so that it perfectly follows the relief of the headboard.

If you don’t know how to decorate the upholstery, you need to take furniture nails, which are fixed at a distance of 1 cm from the edge of the headboard. In order to make the second line of decor, markings are made with chalk or soap with an indentation of approximately 10 cm from the first line. Carnations are nailed along the marked line. Closes with unnecessary material using a stapler back side. The headboard is completely ready.

The element can be attached to a wall or bed. You can also simply place it on the floor against the wall near the bed.

Product using the carriage tie technique

This design looks quite interesting and stylish. For work you will need materials:

  • plywood sheet;
  • stapler;
  • foam rubber - at least 5 cm;
  • pneumatic gun;
  • padding polyester;
  • upholstery fabric;
  • cord;
  • buttons with a fabric surface of medium or large size.

A layer of glue is spread on the plywood sheet and foam rubber is fixed. Next, a sheet of cardboard or thick paper is placed on the surface, holes for the buttons are drawn, then they are cut out. A sheet with cut holes is applied to the foam rubber and the places for the buttons are outlined with a marker.

Making holes for buttons

To transfer the holes to the foam rubber, use a drill with an attachment. You can glue padding polyester on top, which will make the surface softer, but this is not necessary. The upholstery material is stretched, after which through holes are made with a drill. A cord is pulled through the buttons and made into the holes. For convenience, you can use a hook.

Thread the buttons through the holes

The cords must be tightened so that the buttons fit snugly against the upholstery. The ropes are secured with a stapler. The bed with a beautiful headboard is ready.

Headboard using scraps

You can make a soft headboard with your own hands from soft materials or fabric. For significant savings, it is better to take not a whole piece of material, but use many scraps. The material can be old jeans, dresses, etc. The work will be carried out using the following materials:

  • plywood sheet – 2 pcs.;
  • foam;
  • pieces of fabric;
  • saw or hacksaw;
  • scissors;
  • glue and adhesive tape;
  • stapler;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • screwdriver

The plywood sheet must be divided into square or rectangular pieces. Using a saw or hacksaw, cut out the shapes. The number and sizes can be very diverse. Similar figures are cut out of foam rubber; the fabric needs to be 8-10 cm larger.

The materials are glued together as follows: plywood + foam rubber + fabric. To avoid wrinkles, the fabric should be taut. For reliability, the fabric is additionally secured with a stapler. The finished elements are glued together with adhesive tape. Next, take a second plywood, onto which each figure is attached using glue or self-tapping screws and a screwdriver. The product is ready and looks quite original.

Pillow headboard

This backrest is made from a large number of small pillows. It all depends on the desired size of the headboard. Pillows should be the same shape, but may differ in color. The pads are sewn to each other at the corners. They can be secured with glue or nails. The first option is more practical and will not spoil the headboard. You can also use a cornice for these purposes.

In addition

The bed can be decorated with elements from other materials. Wooden headboards are absolutely environmentally friendly and will bring elegance and simplicity to the interior. Wood element It will look especially useful in rustic and natural styles.

The headboard with a built-in mirror looks quite original. Due to this, it is possible to create different visual effects in the bedroom. Soft headboards always look beautiful and highlight general style bedrooms. Element decorated various decor, will add wealth and chic; in addition, made with your own hands, it will always be a unique and original interior detail.

There are various bed headboards on the Internet, photos of which will help you choose the option that is ideal for the design of the room. Create your own unique option, in which the bed will be complemented with a beautiful and functional detail.

Apartment renovation

Hanging pillows can serve as a backrest where there is no such thing. It is logical to replace the headboard with pillows sleeping place, the back of a bench, the side of a couch, etc. They look great in living rooms, on loggias, and in patios.

What are the advantages of a pillow instead of a backrest? First of all, they add comfort to the interior. In addition, they are really cozy because they are soft and comfortable. Touching them is quite pleasant. And, of course, with their help you can always change the color and design of the improvised backrest - you just need to order an updated pillowcase.

Appearance of the back cushion

Dimensions and quantity

Usually, one is used as a backrest volumetric pillow or a couple of medium ones.

However, if they play the role of an elongated backrest (say, above a bench), their set can increase. Sometimes you can see not only 3-4 pieces, but even 6-9 pillows on a wall structure.

Pillows, with large quantities, capable of grouping into several rows.

Design

The back cushion usually has a flat shape. It looks more like a small mattress or some kind of mat. The sewn back mattresses look great.

However, fluffy pillows can also be used, including ordinary ones used for sleeping.

To recreate the backrest, it is logical to use small sofa cushions- square, round or other geometry.

Fastening

Most often, pillows are hung on a small curtain rod. For these purposes, loops or ties, for example from ribbons, are sewn to each thought.
But there are other variations. For example, instead of a cornice, you can take some kind of plank, pole, or even a large one.

In addition, pillows can be attached to hooks installed directly on the wall structure.

An original trick is to hang strong twine on the wall and secure small pillows on it with clothespins or other fasteners.

If you plan to create a backrest from a small number of rows of pillows, it is preferable to sew ties to them, placing them on opposite sides. The top cushions are fixed to the cornice, and each next row tied to the previous one.

It should be noted that pillows can be tied directly to the headboard if it is made in the form of a rigid frame.

Color

The backrest of pillows can have a neutral design - snow-white, beige, pale gray. However, it is usually created bright, since the choice of textiles is very wide - there is always some spectacular, beautiful option.

Patterned textile covers can add variety to a “calm” and “boring” interior.

Pillowcases made of bright plain fabric will transform a comfortable backrest into a beautiful one.

If you really want to integrate a headboard of pillows into a single fabric composition that decorates the bed, then from common textiles it is possible to make covers for a pleasant backrest, curtains, capes, and pillowcases for decorative pillows.

Headboard pillow

A pillow attached to a curtain rod makes a comfortable and beautiful headboard over a couch. Place the pillow lengthwise and the bed will immediately turn into a sofa.

For the extra pillow, we sewed a cover with a frill and hung it on an elegant rod-thin rod. The bright floral pattern echoes the pattern of the curtains made from the same fabric.

A pillow in a cover, suspended on a curtain rod, perfectly complements a bed that does not have a backrest at the head. The pillows are attached to the rod using ties or loops, or you can thread the rod through a drawstring sewn to the back of the cover so that the pillow hangs. The position of the bar should be comfortable so that when you sit on the bed, you can lean on the pillow. The bar is completely covered or, conversely, beautiful tips are selected for it, which serve as a finishing element. Pillows with covers make it very easy and quick to turn an unused bed into a sofa. Place the bed along the wall and hang one long or several small pillows.

Headboard pillow with ties

The filling of this pillow is made of foam rubber. In the store, purchase the required amount of foam rubber 7.5 cm thick. For the case, take one that is not very heavy. cotton fabric. The pillow is tied to the rod with three pairs of ties sewn to the upper edge of the cover. All instructions are for one pillow; for a double bed, make two pillows and hang them side by side. You will need: Centimeter. Curtain rod with fastening and ends. Foam rubber 7.5 cm thick. Fabric. The "zipper" is 5 cm shorter than the height of the pillow. Sewing threads.

Taking measurements

Barbell measurements. Measure the width of the bed. If necessary, you can increase the length of the bar so that its ends protrude beyond the bed.

Strengthening the barbell. Sit on the bed and measure the distance from the barbell to the bed so that the barbell is above your head. Fasten the bar according to the marks, following the instructions exactly.

Measuring the stuffing. Two pillows look better above a double bed. Measure the distance from the rod to the expected level above the bed (A) and subtract 5 cm for the ties. Measure the width of the bed (B), for two pillows it will be 1/2B and a small gap between them. Cut a piece of foam rubber (A - 5 cm) x B (0.5 B).

The pillows above the headboard of the double bed pair perfectly with the white wooden rod.

How to make a headboard pillow

Open the cover. Measure the circumference of the pillow (C), add 3 cm for the seams. Measure the height of the pillow (D), add 10.5 cm for the insert and seams. Using these measurements, cut a rectangle from the fabric.

Stitching the cover. Fold the fabric in half, right side out. Pin and baste with a seam allowance of 1.5 cm. Stitch 8 cm from the corners, press the seams. Place the zipper in the middle on the wrong side of the seam, with the teeth facing down. Pin, baste and topstitch on the right side.

Ties. Cut out 6 strips (50x20 cm). Fold them in half lengthwise, right sides together. Pin and stitch lengthwise and on one short side. Cut off the seams, turn them inside out and iron them. Pin and baste the ties in pairs, matching the cuts.

Placement of ties. Place the zipper in the middle of the back side and unfasten it. Along the front top edge of the cover, make 3 marks for ties at a distance of 7.5 cm from the corners and in the middle. Aligning the cuts, pin the ties along the marks on the front to the front side. Turn the cover inside out, stitch the top edge with a 1.5 cm allowance, taking the ties into the seam. Stitch the bottom edge. Turn the cover through the zipper onto front side.

Padding. Insert the foam through the zipper. Baste the excess fabric at the corners under the seam in the shape of a V. Sew with a blind stitch.

Hanging a pillow. Pin the ties on the bar so that the pillow is in the desired position. Remove the pins and tie each string tightly, one at a time.

Advice. Inner case. To make the pillow last longer, sew the inner cover from calico in the same way as the outer one, but without a zipper or ties. Leave one side open, insert foam, fold the edges and sew with a blind seam.

Pillow with frill

It's very easy to make from a pillow soft back at the head. A thin rod is threaded through a drawstring sewn to the back of the cover so that the pillow is in front of the rod. You can also make loops or ties to hang the pillow. Attach the barbell to a height that is convenient for you. You will need: Fabric. Pillow. Thin rod with fastenings. Sewing threads.

Measurement. Measure the length and width of the pillow, cut out two pieces of fabric using these measurements, adding 1.5 cm to the seams on each side.

Frill. Measure the perimeter of the pillow, multiply the result by 2. Cut out a strip of fabric of the resulting length, 20 cm wide. Sew it into a ring from the wrong side, iron the seam. Fold the frill in half lengthwise, wrong side down. Place prefabricated seams. Pull the threads to adjust the length and pin the frill to the right side of the front of the cover. Baste and stitch.

Kuliska. Cut a drawstring the same length as the pillow, about 8 cm wide. The drawstring should be wide enough to accommodate the rod. Fold the long edges in 1.5 cm and press. Place the drawstring with the wrong side on the right side of the back of the cover, backing 5 cm from the top edge. Pin and stitch along the long edges.

Case. Place the back and front of the cover right sides together. Pin and stitch, leaving an open area (30 cm) in the middle of one side. Don't stitch the ends of the drawstring! Trim the corner seams and turn the cover right side out. Place it on the pillow and sew the hole closed with a blind stitch. Thread the barbell through the drawstring and hang it above the bed.

You want to decorate the wall above the bed in your bedroom, but you don't know how to do it. We'll show you how to decorate your headboard yourself. You are incredibly lucky if you have enough space in your home for a bedroom with a large bed. The bed is the most important item in the bedroom, and the headrest and headboard decor are equally important.

Of course, pillows and bedspreads play a big role, but the design of the wall above the bed itself is very important. Watch our master class: “Wool panels using weaving techniques.” We hope that you also want to make a panel or carpet with your own hands.

Headboard decor

Everyone wants to decorate and make their headboard original and comfortable. After all, the headrest of a bed is such a important detail in the bedroom. Let's consider several options for decorating the headboards.

Beds with soft headboard- the most popular design option. This piece of furniture can be made with your own hands.

To do this you will need plywood or thick cardboard, fabric, and a stapler. Foam rubber sheets are used for filler. We cut plywood or cardboard with a jigsaw and give it this texture the required form: square, rectangle, or elongated figure. It is, of course, most convenient to fit a rectangle or square.

We put two layers of foam rubber on the base (plywood, cardboard), take a stapler, upholstery fabric, and start working with the stapler, stretching the fabric. If you also hang curtains from this fabric, it will be just super!

Who would have thought that old doors would become so popular among lovers of eco and country style. Never throw away old doors - you can make so many original things out of them: shelves, a table, a hanger in the hallway, a key holder, and an excellent headboard for a bed.

Minor restoration (removal of dirt, stains, old paint), minor repairs, and the stylish headboard is ready. For lovers of the shabby style, this is just a godsend: restore the wood, cover it with dark acrylic paint, rub with a candle, and finally cover with white acrylic.

After you sand the corners with fine sandpaper, you are guaranteed shabby.

You can use it to decorate your headboard at home. economical ways. That is, use materials that can be bought for symbolic money. These are, for example, textured wooden pallets– what they don’t make from them: furniture, shelves, and even a headboard. What are the benefits of these pallets?

Firstly, because it is natural wood, and secondly, the low price (from 100 rubles) attracts. This type of furniture is especially relevant for country houses. If you decide to use pallets in an apartment, most often after disassembling the pallets into boards and sanding them, the wood is coated with a primer, stain, paint or varnish.

The stain will help you restore the structure of the wood - such a bed will look great in the interior.

No less than comfortable bed and a beautiful headboard, what is important is how the wall decor is made at the head of your bed. About five years ago, most people began to get rid of carpets. It was believed that carpets were outdated and were in poor taste and a relic of the past.

People removed all the carpets from the walls and most of the carpets from the floors. This year, the fashion for carpets has returned - this element is experiencing reincarnation.

In addition, in addition to carpets, designers actively use various panels using weaving and macrame techniques in their projects. Yes, yes, macrame has returned to our home again, only mainly in such products as panels and door opening decorations.

Before you go shopping for a rug, you need to think about what color or shade will suit your bedroom. If you know in advance what exactly you want to see above the bed, this will save time and effort.

Latest fashion trend– carpets reminiscent of paintings. These are not even carpets, but rather tapestries. It’s up to you to decide which drawing to choose: abstraction or landscape, or maybe a scene from ancient life. This tapestry will decorate any bedroom.

There are many people all over the world who have chosen weaving as a hobby. Weaving is popular with many designers and artists, and it is no longer just a hobby. Decorating the wall above the bed - a great opportunity try to make an original woven rug with your own hands.

In such a carpet you can use any materials, combine wool with synthetics, even seemingly incompatible ones are used: wool and woven rag, linen and paper, rope and bast, jute and hemp. It all depends on the author’s imagination.
For example, if you take felting wool and lay it around the warp threads, you will get a design that resembles soap bubbles.

The next weaving technique is pile weaving.

This product resembles a “shaggy texture”; the main thing in this work is the rigid base on which the different colors threads Most often it is wool or acrylic yarn, but you can use cotton and fabric scraps. The length of the pile can be made to any length. These rugs look great above the bed in the bedroom.

Wool carpet using weaving technique - master class

Designers often decorate the wall above the bed with carpets, tapestries and all kinds of panels. Let's try to make a fashionable panel using weaving technique.

For this we need a homemade weaving frame; it can be made from 4 wooden blocks. In this master class, the frame measures 32.5/45 cm (13 “x 18”). You can also do bigger size, it depends on the size of the carpet. You also need threads for the warp (thick cotton), which are pulled over the frame (threads running along the frame are called warp, threads running across are called weft). The simplest and most popular weave is called plain weave.

Cardboard frame and plain weave.

The distance between the notches should depend on the thickness of the yarn used in your work.

So, for work you will need:

  1. A frame with grooves (notches) with warp threads stretched across it.
  2. The warp threads are cotton (dark gray in the photo).
  3. Simple wooden ruler.
  4. Gray wool for the lower fringe.
  5. White yarn for felting (making “braids”).
  6. Beige twisted yarn for cross weft.
  7. Scissors.
  8. Rail on the wall.

We stretch the dark gray warp threads (vertical) onto the frame, going around the grooves. In total, you need to stretch 35 strings to work.. Pull it tighter, at the bottom, around the groove - make a knot with dark gray thread. This way the foundation was secured. Next, we will weave panels. We start with 4 rows of plain weave with beige twisted yarn.

You need to make 7 tassels from gray wool. Cut into 50 cm pieces. Thus, we will need 7*20 pieces for the brushes. = 140 pcs. segments of 50 cm each. We take the first pack of cut pieces and, starting from the lower right corner, begin to bend around 5 strings (Fig. 3 and 4).

We tie 7 tassels and straighten them. For brushes, you can use inexpensive threads, not necessarily wool.

Next, we cut off white twisted yarn 2 m. 40 cm. And you need 5 such pieces. Our next stitch is called sumak and is done with braided stitching. You can use 1 strand of yarn, but 5 strands give us required volume. After all, our panel is three-dimensional. We wrap every 3 strings, as shown in Fig. 9 and 10. And so on until the end of the row.

We take our wooden ruler and “trim” the finished row, pressing it with the ruler. When we reach the last string, we bend the string and start weaving again. For convenience, you can thread a thread or knitting needle horizontally between the strings. This will make it easier to weave.

We use all the pieces of thread prepared for the braid. Then we have plain weave again.

10 rows of plain weave, then we divide all our strings into 4 pieces. For every 8 strings we will make a braid of white yarn for felting. If you don’t have yarn for felting, take any yarn and “fluff” it with your hands. We make a braid, as in Fig. 13 and 14. There will be 4 of these braids.

After this, again 10 rows of plain weaving, a braid of 5 threads, and again 10 rows of weaving.

Next we need to remove the carpet from the frame. Remove the upper threads as shown in Fig. 18. Make loops and thread them through wooden slats. We will use this rail to hang the rug on the wall above the bed. We tie all the knots from below and hide all the ends of the threads on the wrong side.

All that remains is to hang the panel above the bed.

That's the whole master class. Now you know what to make from leftover yarn, ribbons, cords, ropes, and so on.
