One of these options is to update or sew decorative pillows for the sofa and armchairs yourself. Many different cushions are sold in stores, but still a handmade product will be unique.

Do-it-yourself sofa pillows can emphasize your individuality, convey the mood and simply create a cozy atmosphere in your home.

There is one trick to this idea. You can sew several pillows and each one has several sets of decorative pillowcases. This will allow you to constantly change the notes in your interior, that is, you can change pillowcases depending on your mood, season, and so on, while the pillows themselves serve as the basis and do not require replacement.

When creating a decorative pillow or pillowcase, you should first of all decide on the theme of the room in which they will be located, choose a style.

Decorative pillows will complement any interior, but this is only if they are suitable in color and style.

After that, you can look at a photo on the Internet with ideas for handmade pillows and decide on the size of the product.

Making decorative pillows at home

It is not at all necessary to be an experienced seamstress and have a sewing machine to sew a decorative pillow. The main thing in this business is a great desire, patience and perseverance. It is easy and simple to sew decorative and original pillows, and expensive fabrics and accessories are not required.

The shape of the pillow does not have to be square or rectangular, it can be whatever your soul and fantasy desires. All the decorations that will be used in the decoration will be needed for the pillowcase itself. The pillowcase can be easily removed, so it will not be difficult to remove it in order to wash it or replace it with another one.

As a rule, the pillow itself is filled with stuffing, but there are cases when stuffing material is stuffed directly into a decorative pillowcase. The second method, of course, saves money, but the appearance of the finished product deteriorates.

Before you sew a pillow with your own hands, you need to pick up materials. For this purpose, not only fabrics are suitable, but also fur trimmings, remnants of leather or a substitute. Felt, felt fabrics, fleece look just as good in such products.

When creating patterns for pillows, it is worth taking into account the fact that when it is filled with padding material, the finished dimensions will be much smaller. Therefore, 3-4 centimeters should be added to the selected sizes on each side, and this is in addition to the fabric allowances for the seams.

It is very easy to cut a pillow of a standard shape, it is a rectangle measuring 128 by 63 cm. The main part of the pillow should be made of dense fabric that will hold its shape.

Three sides of the pillow should be sewn, and in the fourth one should not be stitched to the end, there should be room for stuffing, then this line can be done either on a typewriter or by hand.

You can use different materials for stuffing, for example, synthetic winterizer, or foam rubber, or down.

Now that you know how to make your own cushions, you should proceed with your decorative pillowcase. Cutting out a decorative pillowcase is completely simple and does not take much time, because its dimensions completely coincide with the cut out pillow.

Living room and bedroom, kitchen and seating area on the balcony - there are many rooms in the house that can be made cozier with the help of beautiful cushions. It is not a problem to buy decorative pillows with a design suitable for the interior style in stores. But you must admit, it is much more interesting to sew or knit them with your own hands. We have prepared seven simple master classes for making cushions of various shapes. Photos, step-by-step explanations and ideas for stylish decor will help you understand the nuances of the work.

The classic interiors of modern living rooms and bedrooms are stylishly complemented by square and rectangular sofa cushions, as well as bolster cushions with original decor.

In terms of ornaments and colors, they do not have to match the upholstery of furniture or curtains. Non-trivial interior solutions and eclecticism (a thoughtful combination of several styles) are in fashion.

For example, sofas can be decorated with many (designers advise you to choose an odd number) of bright decorative pillows that differ, and even contrast, in colors and textures. They do not break the harmony at all - on the contrary, they look stylish and interesting. You can arrange multi-colored pillows in one row, in tiers or in groups. Such a variegated composition will look especially good on long, corner and modular sofas.

In high-tech and loft environments, combinations of several sofa cushions that differ in shape will look stylish. For example, oval, triangular and rectangular on the same sofa or armchair. It is good if prints or other finishes will "overlap" with each other in shades or thematically. So that the cushions do not look like a foreign detail in the restrained avant-garde interiors, it is better to choose an interesting, but laconic decor.

In the trend of interior fashion - decorative pillows with abstract and geometric ornaments, with inscriptions, with appliqués, as well as plain ones. In one composition, you can safely combine different types of prints. For example, small and large ornaments, a check with stripes or polka dots, floral motifs with abstract patterns. However, in order for the interior to look stylish as a whole, the individual details of the decor of the sofa cushions must still be in harmony with each other.

A good solution for vintage and oriental interiors will be cushions of an unusual shape. For example, pill pillows, polyhedrons, rollers with elegant and romantic decor: tapestries, rich embroidery, hemstitching, tassels, fringes, lace trim, spectacular draperies.

For the nursery, beautiful sofa pillows of non-traditional shapes are suitable: ball pillows, knot pillows, toy pillows made of bright textiles, artificial velor, fur of a wide variety of rich and cheerful colors. By design, they can complement the main theme of arranging a nursery or become an interesting contrasting accent in the interior.

Sizes of sofa cushions

There are no special requirements for the size of cushions. Choose them in accordance with the purpose, with your vision, desire, interior style of the room and the size of the furniture. The larger they are, the larger and more visible decorative pillows can be.

If we talk about classic square and rectangular decorative pillows, then the standard ones will look best on spacious soft sofas, beds and armchairs - 40 x 40 cm, 40 x 45 cm, 45 x 45 cm.

Furniture with hard metal and wood backs can be made more comfortable with large pillows - for example, 50 x 50 cm, 60 x 60 cm or 50 x 70 cm, and volumetric bolsters. They can be sewn from durable curtain fabric, velor or vinyl.

Small decorative pillows are well suited for compact home furniture - small sofas, couches, armchairs, ottomans: 30 x 30 cm; 35 x 30 cm, 30 x 20 cm, as well as not too long and voluminous cushions.

How to fill a sofa cushion

Natural fillers such as feathers, down, wool, bamboo fibers, etc. are not a good choice for cushions. They do not keep their shape and volume poorly, moreover, they quickly accumulate dust and are difficult for regular maintenance. Therefore, it is better to choose durable, comfortable and practical synthetic materials as stuffing. Fortunately, modern manufacturers offer them in a more than sufficient range.

Cushions can be filled:

  • holofiber;
  • tinsullane;
  • struttofiber;
  • elastic padding polyester;
  • dense foam rubber;
  • polystyrene beads / granules.

The choice of material depends on whether you want to sew cushions for a comfortable stay or plan to use them for purely decorative purposes. In the first case, gentle and soft fillers are suitable for stuffing: holofiber, tinsullane, etc. In the second, more elastic foam rubber and synthetic winterizer.

How to sew a sofa cushion

Sewing sequence of a classic square cushion

What to prepare:

  • dense fabric;
  • pattern chalk;
  • cutting knife;
  • scissors;
  • "Zipper" (40 cm long);
  • filler (synthetic winterizer, foam rubber or other).

How to sew a pillow:

Step 1. Draw a simple pattern on thick paper - a square 40 x 40 cm. Before cutting out, measure 2.5 cm from each side (allowances for seams and a zipper). The pattern can be drawn with small or thin dry remnants directly on the fabric.

Step 2. Cut out the fabric for the cushion cover. It is better to do this by folding the fabric in half, then one of the sides will not have to be stitched. In this case, the seam allowance on the fold side does not need to be taken into account.

Step 3. Fold the fabric face to face. The fold can be ironed for convenience. We fasten it on all sides with tailor's pins or sweep it away. Sew the sides of the cushion cover on the sewing machine. The seam pitch is 2.5 mm.

Step 4. Turn out the finished cover. Using scissors or a pencil wrapped in a cloth, gently straighten the corners. Let's add a lightning bolt. To make the seam even, the corsage tape "zippers" can be pre-swept to the edges of the cover with large stitches. We will sew one side of the fastener with the open "zipper", the other - with the closed one.

Step 5. Straighten and iron all the seams from the front side. We will re-sew along the edges of the seams until the zipper stops, that is, we will make a seam seam. This is necessary so that the edges of the fabric sections do not crumble, and the wrong side of the pillow cover turns out to be neat.

Step 6. Unscrew the cover, straighten the corners. We will lay additional lines on both sides of the zipper. The clipper foot should move close to the teeth of the clasp. Then the finishing seam will turn out perfectly even.

Step 7. Iron the decorative pillow cover. Fill it to the desired density with filler. Fasten the zipper and shake the pillow several times to distribute the filling evenly.

In this way, you can sew both the inner cover for the filler (napernik) and the outer decorative cover of the sofa cushion. The following video tutorial from Natalia Kasyanik will help you to visualize the intricacies of sewing a classic decorative pillow of a square or rectangular shape.

Toy pillow "Owl"

What you need:

  • white and yellow fleece / felt;
  • blue cotton fabric with polka dots;
  • blue cotton fabric (plain or with a bright print);
  • narrow blue ribbon;
  • small black beads or buttons - 2 pcs.;
  • a piece of openwork lace;
  • pattern paper;
  • pencil and crayon;
  • pins;
  • cutting knife;
  • filler.

How to sew a toy pillow:

Step 1. Let's draw an owl pattern, increasing it to the desired size.

Step 2. Cut out the patterns. We will attach them to the fabric with tailor's pins. We outline the seam allowance with a dotted line, 1 cm is enough.

Step 3 Carefully cut out: the two main parts of the toy pillow (torso with head and ears) from blue fabric; four wing parts in blue polka dot fabric; two white fleece eye mugs; one triangle of yellow fleece for the owl nose. In addition, you will need two details for the bow: a rectangle and a square. We cut them out of polka dot fabric. Sizes - at will, in proportion to the size of the pillow.

Step 4. Iron all the details. The eyes, beak, wings and lace strip will be stitched to the body of the owl with a decorative "zigzag". Using a glue gun, attach buttons or beads - the pupils of the bird.

Step 5. Bring both parts of the torso face to face. Pin it off with pins. We will lay the usual line along the contours, with an indent of 1 cm. Leave a 3-4 cm segment (below, between the owl's wings) unstitched to fill the pillow. So that there are no screeds on the material, we will make notches on the ears and other convex areas of the toy.

Step 6. Turn out the pillow, straighten the corners. Let’s iron it. Gently and evenly fill with filler to the required density. Check if the ears and other protruding parts are well filled. Sew up the hole.

Step 7. Let's make a voluminous bow. Fold the square in half (you should get a wide strip) and iron it. Roll the rectangle to face inward. We will sew (with an allowance of 1 cm), turn it out, iron it, put it in the middle into a nice assembly. We fix it with a prepared strip.

Step 8. Attach the bow to the owl's ear. We will glue another decorative bow - made of ribbon - on the body of the owl, over the lace.

Pillow toy "Cat"

What to prepare:

  • baked milk-colored cotton fabric (with a dull print);
  • plain cotton fabric - pink and dark beige;
  • fleece brown;
  • dublerin / non-woven;
  • buttons dark brown - 2 pcs.;
  • paper for patterns;
  • crayon or thin marker;
  • brown floss;
  • tailor's pins;
  • iron.

How to sew a toy pillow:

Step 1. Download the pattern. If necessary, we will increase it to the required parameters. We will carefully cut out all the elements of the drawing.

Step 2. Lay out the paper parts of the toy on the fabric. Attach with tailor's pins. We outline a 1 cm seam allowance with a dotted line.

Step 3. Sequentially cut out from cotton fabric the color of baked milk: one half of the kitten's body; four parts for the front legs; two pieces for the tail. From brown fleece: the second half of the body; four pieces for the hind legs. Made of pink cotton fabric: four pieces for the cat's ears. Let's make a decorative heart from light beige cotton.

Step 4. To make the pillow toy strong and last longer, seal the body parts with a doubler. To do this, put the cut out elements on the wrong side of the glue side of the dublein. We will fix it with tailor's pins. We will cut exactly along the contour. Remove the pins.

Step 5. Fold the details of the cat's body made of fabric and doublerin in pairs. Iron it thoroughly so that they stick together completely. We will glue or sew a heart on the front part with a decorative zigzag.

Step 6. Fold the blanks of the ears, tail, legs of the cat in pairs (facing one another). We will lay along the contours of the stitch. Leave small holes for filling. Along the edge with curly (you can use ordinary) scissors, we will make frequent notches or teeth.

Step 7. Turn out the stitched parts, straighten all the corners and protruding parts, iron them. Fill evenly and tightly with filler. We attach them with pins to the front (cotton) part of the body. Zigzag stitch twice. Draw a cat's face with a chalk or thin marker.

Step 8. Put the blank of the back of the cat made of fleece on top. Align, pin or sweep. We will lay a line along the contour, connecting all the elements. For stuffing and turning the toy out, we will leave a small unstitched area between the hind legs.

Step 9. Turn the toy pillow onto the front side. Ironing. Distribute the filler evenly and tightly inside. Sew the hole.

Step 10. Let's finish the work. Sew the front legs by hand. We decorate them with buttons.

Step 11. We will beautifully embroider the details of the face on the finished children's pillow "Cat" with brown floss.

Original decorative pillow "Knot"

What you need:

  • elastic jersey fabric with beautiful patterns or plain color;
  • a cardboard tube from foil or paper towels;
  • a thick knitting needle or similar device;
  • filler (better - synthetic winterizer);
  • glue gun / textile glue;
  • ruler;
  • crayon;
  • scissors.

How to make a beautiful knot pillow:

Step 1. Cut the jersey into strips. Optimum width - 17 cm, length - 2 m. If the length of the fabric is shorter, connect the strips with a glue gun or fabric glue.

Step 2. Let's make knitted blanks for volumetric tubes. Put each strip of fabric with the wrong side up. Apply glue to one side along the length. Fold the strip in half and quickly fasten the sides. Smooth out the irregularities.

Step 3. Turn out the glued blanks. This is easily done with a cardboard tube. Pull one end of the fabric through the tube, turn it out on the opposite side, and put it on the tube. Pulling and gathering the fabric into a tight gather, we turn it out. It is not necessary to remove from the cardboard tube.

Step 4. Fill the blanks with padding polyester. To do this, place the filler inside the tube. Using a knitting needle or other suitable object, push the synthetic winterizer into the knitted blank and tamp it lightly. Distribute the filler evenly.

Step 5. We will tie a beautiful volumetric knot from the resulting soft tubes. It is convenient to do this on the floor. Two blanks (we need knitted tubes 2 m long) are placed perpendicularly, crosswise.

Step 6. Bend the ends of the knitted tubes alternately with a free loop in the following order: first - top, then - left, bottom and right. We will pass the right one from above into the first loop (the one that was formed when the upper end of the fabric tube was bent). Tighten the knot carefully.

Step 7. At the next stage, we perform the same actions in almost reverse order. First, as before, we will make a loop from the upper end of the tube, then from the right, lower and left. We will pass the left end into the first loop. Let's tighten it up, smooth it out nicely.

Step 8. Let's complete the work by repeating the actions that were performed in the sixth step. It is more convenient to tighten the finished knot from the wrong side. Carefully straighten the loops. We fix the edges of the tubes inside the pillow or, for reliability, sew them on.

How to use decorative pillows

It is considered a delusion that there is only place for decorative pillows in the living room recreation area. Beautiful pillows and bolsters can be part of the textile design of the bed. Comfortable pillows can be used for a comfortable position in the dining room or kitchen (for example, in the dining area with the so-called "corner"). Decorative pillows can be used not only in the interior of the home, but also outside it. For example, to increase the comfort of a seating area with garden furniture displayed on an open veranda or terrace, you can use various types of pillows, including decorative ones.

It is the easiest and quickest way to change the character of the interior with the help of bright decorative pillows. If the whole room is executed in light or neutral colors, then bright textiles in the recreation area will easily become an accent element. For a global change in color temperature and design dynamics, it is enough to change the covers on the pillows that provide the comfort of the relaxation area.

With the help of pillows on a sofa or bed, in small armchairs or large-scale ensembles, on personal chairs and even swings, you can uniquely determine the stylistic design of the interior. For example, the presence of a marine or beach style will be indicated by a textile design using a blue and white stripe, images of ships, anchors, shells, inhabitants of various reservoirs.

Variety of options

Knitted products

From knitted pillow covers and breathes home coziness and comfort. Ideal for Scandinavian interior design. But many variations of the modern style will easily accept such decor. Beautiful textured knitting in neutral colors will be a harmonious addition to the design of the recreation area, and bright threads will help create the necessary color accent if the image of a sofa, armchair or bed was destined to stand out from the general background.

What do you associate with the word yarn itself? And the wool? Surely many will say that the sheep fleece was introduced to the sazu. Knitting pillows in the shape of lambs from woolen threads is an incredibly harmonious solution. And there is no need to talk about the originality of the result obtained - such decorative pillows will cheer you up even on the gloomiest day.

Handcrafted crisp white lace will look great on linen or cotton cushion covers.

If you don’t know how to knit or don’t want to, but you have knitting threads and a desire to use them to decorate decorative pillow covers, the simplest application will be to make pom-poms. The technique is simple, even a child can handle it, but the result is a wonderful, textured decor that lifts the mood and transforms the neutral design of the room.

The most common way to create texture on pillow covers is to use the fabric itself. Folds and various folds, bows and all kinds of weaving (from the main fabric), even knots - everything is used to create a creative design.

The method in which there is practically no need to sew - the pillow is literally wrapped in fabric, but in an original way.

Ordinary ruffles and frills can be the basis for creating an original and stylish decor item. It is enough to sew strips of fabric gathered into ruffles on the simplest pillow cover, as a boring interior detail turns into its decoration. This way of decorating is also suitable for those. who are just trying their hand at sewing.

With the help of many bright circles cut out of felt (or other material that holds its shape well and does not require processing along the edges of the products), you can make an incredibly textured, original pillow that can decorate any interior.

Embroidery, appliqués and combination of materials

Applique is a great way to create a unique decorative element from available tools. If you have leftover fabrics, felt, beautiful threads, beads, rhinestones, braid or ribbons - any of these materials can be the basis for creating an applique. You just need to decide on the topic. It will depend on the chosen stylistic design of the room for which the decorative pillow will be made. But there are many universal options - images of plants, flowers, geometric shapes, abstract patterns ...

The image of animals ...

New Year theme ...

Hearts, as a symbol of not only love, but also the holiday of Valentine's Day ...

Button applique is an easy way to decorate that even a child can handle. Especially if the buttons are not sewn on, but glued. Ask the children to help you and you will receive not only an original decorative and at the same time practical element of the interior, but also invaluable moments of joint creativity spent with your child.

Decorating the pillow fabric with beads, rivets, sequins looks even more textured and luxurious. It may not be very convenient to use such pillows for their intended purpose, but they will certainly decorate the interior.

An excellent opportunity for the rational disposal of leftover fabrics of different colors is to use the pieces to make a patchwork cushion. Patchwork looks original and invariably brings warmth and comfort to any interior.

The simplest way to combine fabrics is to arrange translucent laces on a solid background. The design looks elegant and even modest, it will organically fit into almost any interior of the room.If you are not sure about the possibility of combining fabrics of different colors and prints to create decorative pillows, then use a more or less neutral option that will organically look in the modern interior of any room ... Black and white print is quite conservative and is able to successfully fit into various furnishings and color palette of the room.

The combination of fabrics not only of different colors, but also textures looks luxurious. For example, elements made of leather or jeans look great as a decor against the background of a solid-colored dense fabric.

Drawings and other ways to color variety

Drawing on fabric is not one of the types of children's tricks for "transforming" the surrounding space, into an occupation for quite adults who want to create truly exclusive decor items for their homes. There are many fabric painting tools on the market that can be used on various types of textiles. The pillows can then be washed. A drawing can be abstract (this can also be created by a person without art education, but with the obligatory desire to create an original, personalized thing for his home) ...

The print can be quite specific. A fun way to create a drawing or pattern is by using a stencil. A twig or leaf, letters, geometric shapes, in a word, any image that is convex enough to leave prints on the pillow cover can act as a blank for transferring a pattern to fabric.

Second life for old things

Do not rush to throw away spoiled or simply out of fashion things - they can become the basis for a new interior item, for example, a cover for a decorative pillow. The advantage of this approach is not only in obtaining a new decorative element (with a functional load in the meantime), but also in the fact that you will not need to spend on consumables. See what more original products can be sewn from an old shirt, dress or sweater

Children's room pillows

Making decorative pillows for children is a special pleasure. After all, such a textile element of the interior will not only fulfill its basic functions, but also decorate the child's room, it can become a favorite toy, the reason for gaining new knowledge and skills, sensations and impressions. When making pillows for decorating a children's room, it is important to understand that they will be used not only for their intended purpose, not only on the bed and sofa, in an armchair or chair, but also on the floor, and will take an active part in games.

Recently, the manufacture of letter-pillows has gained great popularity, which can be used both for its intended purpose and in the form of decor and toys. Most often, letters are made for children's rooms, from which you can compose a child's name or one capital letter of the name is sewn.

What material and filler to choose for making a pillow with your own hands: tips

There are pillows in every home. They are an indispensable attribute for sleep. In addition, pillows are no longer just an attribute for sleep. Nowadays, they are a stylish interior decoration. You can see beautiful decorative pillows not only in the bedroom, but also in the living room, nursery and even in the kitchen. Many people decorate kitchen sofas with beautiful pillows, they are also placed on the floor, on chairs. Pillows make the seating area more comfortable, which is why they are so loved and used wherever possible.

Children's rooms and cots are also decorated with beautiful, original, bizarre pillows. It is comfortable, stylish and modern. In short, they are an important part of modern room design.

You can sew pillows with your own hands. It will not take much time and will help the needlewomen to take their leisure time. Before you start sewing a pillow, decide what it is for:

  • Sleeping pillows. Should be comfortable, sturdy, practical and durable.
  • Decorative pillows. They can be of irregular shape, with voluminous decorations.

Particular attention should be paid to the choice of filler:

  • Cotton wool... Cheap, but short-lived and low-quality filler. First, it is very difficult to stuff the cotton into the pillow evenly. Secondly, the cotton wool will begin to clump very quickly. Thirdly, with each wash, you will have to unpick the pillow and take out the cotton wool.
  • Sintepon... Also not the best filler option. This material also rolls quickly into lumps. After a short period of use, the pillow will lose its appearance.
  • Fluff... Down pillows are soft and airy. But the downside is that some people are prone to fluff allergies. While down pillows used to be considered the best, now many people try to avoid fluff in their homes.
  • Holofiber... Hypoallergenic material, does not roll. With careful use, it will last more than 10 years. The most suitable pillow filler.
  • Silicone Granules or polystyrene balloons... This material is also considered to be hypoallergenic. Dry clean only shown. Most suitable for decorative pillows, sleeping pillows can make a rustling sound from rolling balls, which not everyone will like.

If you need a pillow for sleeping, make a nice removable pillowcase, but don't add bulky pieces to it. Because during sleep, the details will press and interfere. For such a pillow, it is better to choose a beautiful cotton fabric and make it as simple as possible. If we are talking about a sofa cushion, then various small and large elements are appropriate here.

The pillow material should not be electrified, it is advisable to give preference to natural fabrics.

The following fabrics are suitable:

  • Cotton
  • Batiste
  • Satin
  • Percale

When sewing a pillow, follow these rules:

  1. For a delicate filling, choose a soft cover fabric.
  2. If the filler is fluffy, then the fabric of the cover should be dense.
  3. The filling and fabric of the cover must match. For example, bamboo filling goes well with a breathable cotton cover.

DIY pillows: how and with what to decorate?

Besides beauty, practicality and durability, pillows should be easy to clean. This must be taken into account when decorating a pillow. You should not choose too small and fragile elements for decoration. For example, beads.

Important: The pillow cover must be removable so that it can be washed at any time. And if there is a lot of fragile decor on the pillow, then you should wash such covers with your hands, otherwise a machine wash will ruin your beautiful cover.

You can decorate the pillow in different ways, below you will see this by seeing numerous photos and ideas. You can decorate the pillow in the following ways:

  1. Embroidery(ribbons, satin stitch, cross). The best option would be cross stitching. Such a pillow will be easy to wash, you can not be afraid to damage the pattern. With ribbon embroidery, the situation becomes more complicated. You will have to use a vacuum cleaner and wash the covers by hand.
  2. Application... There are many simple yet stylish applique options.
    In the patchwork technique. This technique is the sewing together of multi-colored patches into a single whole. Such a bright pillow will enliven the interior, add colors to the boring monochromatic colors of the room.
  3. Knitted covers... If you know how to crochet, knitting, you can easily decorate the pillow. Knitted pillows are a fashionable accent in the interior.
  4. Old things... It would seem that unnecessary things can only be thrown away. But in fact, there are many ways to use such things worthily.
  5. Custom shaped pillows... These pillows do not require additional decor. They are in themselves a beautiful decoration of the room.
  6. Embossed decor... Provides fertile ground for imagination. It can be ruffles, puffs, frills, weaving, etc.
  7. Play of colors... Several pillows with different harmonious colors will look cool and fresh in the interior.
  8. Brushes... The edges of the pillows can be decorated with tassels.
  9. Lace... Such decor will make the pillow romantic, delicate and sophisticated. This pillow with lace is perfect for girls.

Important: When choosing a decor, you should not follow the principle: everything and more. Such an approach can ultimately result in a tasteless thing. It's better to choose one key element that will become the highlight of your pillow.

For example, as in the photo below. A simple button in the center of the pillow, combined with black and white stripes directed in different directions, makes the pillow original, but at the same time it is not striking.

How to sew beautiful pillowcases on pillows with your own hands: patterns, photos

If you decide to sew pillowcases with your own hands, you will need:

  • Sewing machine
  • Textile
  • Threads
  • Tape measure
  • Piece of chalk
  • Safety pins
  • Scissors

First, decide what kind of pillowcase you want to sew:

  • With smell
  • With ears
  • With a zipper

Each pillowcase will have its own fabric consumption. Also, fabric consumption depends on the size of the pillow. Standard sizes of pillows are 70 × 70, 70 × 50, 60 × 40.

There are also square pillows with sizes - 60x60, 50x50, 40x40. Square pillows are usually not used for sleeping, they serve as a decoration.

Important: When choosing fabric for a pillowcase, focus primarily not on appearance, but on quality. Choose a dense, high-quality fabric, do not take the cheapest version of the fabric. Since pillowcases wear out quickly, it is best to immediately sew them from high quality durable fabric.

Below is a diagram pillowcases with wrap for pillow 70 × 70 cm with 20 cm wrap. Take seam allowances into account.

Pillowcase pattern

Do not forget that the cotton fabric may shrink after washing. Therefore, the fabric should be washed, dried and ironed to shrink before sewing pillowcases. Before you buy fabric, count the total number of pillowcases and size you need.

If you have chosen a fabric with a small pattern, it does not need to be adjusted when sewing. If the drawing is large, its shape should be taken into account when cutting. Flowers, animals should not be cut, they should fit entirely on a pillowcase.

Square pillowcase sewn according to the pattern below. You need to calculate the size of the pillow yourself. The wrap-around pillowcase is sewn from a single piece of fabric.

Square pillowcase pattern

Zippered pillowcase allows you to conveniently hide the pillow. A hidden zipper is suitable for such a pillowcase, which must be sewn in from the seamy side.

For sewing pillowcases "with ears" it takes more fabric than a wrap-around pillowcase. In addition to the fabric for smell, when calculating the fabric, add 4-5 cm on each side to the ears. We suggest watching a video, which presents a detailed master class on sewing a pillowcase with ears.

But they can serve not just for beauty, but perform a practical function. You can lean on such pillows, lie down, lay on them while lying on the couch. In a word, there will always be a use for sofa cushions.

A few words on how to combine cushions with your existing interior:

  1. Contrast with the sofa... Match fabric colors for the cushions that contrast with the upholstery of the sofa. Looks spectacular when there are no more than two colors or prints.
  2. Black and white colors... This color scheme is classic. Pillows in this color will suit almost any interior. They are laconic, but at the same time they look quite impressive.
  3. Ornaments and traditional prints... These can be prints and symbolic paintings of any nation. Ornaments and prints of the peoples of the world are a fashionable trend in interior design. Complementing the color of the pillows with other matching elements, for example, dishes or a vase, will only emphasize the sophistication of your taste.
  4. Plant analogy... If there are living plants in the room that stand in a prominent place, you can choose matching pillows. Pillows with geometric shapes interspersed with green color will accentuate living plants and will successfully fit into the overall interior.

You can also make felt appliqué patches in the form of geometric shapes, in this case circles of different sizes. The variety of colors plays an important role in the decor. Do not overdo it with flowers. If there are already a lot of colorful objects in the room, the colorful pillow will be superfluous. But such a pillow will dilute the plain interior.

A pillow in a children's room can be used for the following purposes:

  • A child can lie on the floor on a large handmade pillow if he likes to do it. At the same time, the mother may not worry that the child is cold, because a warm pillow will keep you warm. An interesting cushion idea for playing on the floor is the puzzle cushions. They are soft, large in size and attract the child with a variety of colors.
  • If you make an elongated pillow, it can become a draft shield if you place it on the edge of a crib or on a windowsill.
  • It has also become popular to decorate the nursery with pillows in the shape of the name of the child. It is beautiful, stylish and practical, because the child will definitely be carried away by this kind of toy.

When choosing fabric for pillows in a nursery, it is better to give preference to natural fabrics: linen, cotton, calico, chintz, knitwear. It is undesirable to use synthetic fabrics in a children's room, because they can become electrified, stick to the body, and cause uncomfortable sensations.

Important: Separately, it is worth paying attention to the decor of baby pillows. If the child is small, it is better not to use decor in the form of beads, buttons and other small elements at all. A kid can easily swallow a small part, and this is very dangerous.

Even if a child has grown up, this does not mean that he does not want to taste the same bead. When creating baby pillows, it is better to limit yourself to a safe decor, for example, a fabric applique.

Fast navigation through the article

To update the interior of the children's room and make the baby's bed more comfortable, it is enough to decorate it with a couple of three decorative pillows. We offer creative mothers to sew them with their own hands, because this is done quickly, simply and on a budget. The main thing here is to come up with an interesting design and choose the right materials.

In this article, we have collected 30 inspiring photo examples of baby pillows for beginners and experienced craftswomen, and also prepared 3 step-by-step DIY master classes:

  1. Toy pillows in the form of a cloud.
  2. Pillows-letters.
  3. Patchwork pillows.
  • Combine different pillows with each other for a more fun interior. The composition can be united by the shape, color or print of the products. When choosing fabrics, it is easiest to focus on the colors and patterns of the wallpaper, as well as the rest of the textiles in the children's room. For example, pillows can overlap with curtains, sofa upholstery and, of course, a blanket.
  • When coming up with the style and decor of the future product, take into account the style of the interior. If, say, bright toy pillows can be sewn for a modern interior, then products of calm colors and traditional styles in the form of rollers and pillows with ruffles or tassels are more suitable for a modern interior, as in the photo below.

  • For sewing baby pillows, it is advisable to use natural and dense fabrics (linen, cotton), which are much easier to wash, say, felt, and look much more beautiful than synthetics like fleece.
  • Before sewing, the fabric should be washed and ironed, then you will sew already taking into account the shrinkage of the material.
  • It is clear that baby pillows should be washed often, but how to wash decorative pillows that do not have pillowcases and must always keep their shape? We recommend using:
  1. Synthepukh (not to be confused with synthetic winterizer);
  2. Holofiber.

These materials are hypoallergenic, keep their shape well after washing, and they can be washed in a washing machine at a low temperature, even with a spin cycle. Unfortunately, synthetic winterizer, natural fluff, buckwheat, batting, foam rubber and other fillers do not have such properties.

  • If you want to make a decorative and sleeping pillow at the same time, for example, a bolster or a side for a crib, then it is recommended to sew not just a pillow, but a pillowcase with a pillowcase. After all, removable pillowcases are much easier to wash, besides, by sewing one pillowcase and a pair of pillowcases that match it, you can update the interior according to your mood.

Master class number 1: Pillow-cloud from a sweater

As you know, the world of children's interiors has its own trends and such pillows in the form of clouds are just at the peak of their popularity. They are good because they are easy to sew, look cute and are suitable for decorating a room for both a boy and a girl. In this master class, we will tell you how to sew a soft cloud with your own hands from any sweater in a pleasant color.

Materials:

  1. Sweater (better made of polyester than acrylic. By the way, instead of a sweater, you can take an old cotton sweatshirt, T-shirt, etc.);
  2. Synthepukh;
  3. Sewing accessories;
  4. Sewing machine (if any);
  5. Paper for making patterns.

Step 1. Draw on paper a pattern in the form of a cloud or any other shape that you like.

Step 2. Turn the sweater inside out (!) And attach the resulting template (including the back layer of fabric) to it using pins as shown in the photo. Then we outline the contour of the cloud and start cutting out the blanks with an indent of about 0.7 mm (for allowances).

Step. 3. Now we begin to grind two parts of the pillow along the previously drawn contour, but be sure to leave about 10 cm not sewn.

Step 4. In the places where the cloud is rounded and in the corners, we make cuts - this will make the shape of the pillow more accurate and correct.

Step 5. Unscrew the pillow and stuff it tightly with filler using, for example, a Chinese stick. Finally, cover the hole with a blind stitch.

Woo-ala! The baby pillow is ready!

Based on this master class, you can sew pillows in a variety of shapes and colors. For example, a cloud can have arms and legs, beady eyes and ruddy felt cheeks.

Instead of a cloud, you can sew a star, a drop of rain, a moon, a heart or a candy. For examples of such pillows, see the following selection of photos.

Master class number 2: Pillow letter

And now we propose to sew another simple but original letter pillow, which will help to personalize a nursery or a bed, if, for example, there are more children.

Materials:

  1. Textile;
  2. Synthepukh;
  3. Sewing accessories;
  4. Sewing machine.

By combining 3 types of fabric, you can use up leftovers and make your pillow design more fun.

Step 1. Select a letter, draw it (or print it in A4 format) and cut it out along the contour.

Step 2. Now we need to cut out two parts of the pillow - front and back.

  • To cut the front of the pillow, you need to: put our template face up on the fabric that is face up, circle it and then cut out the blank.
  • To cut out the back side of the letter you need to: do everything the same way, but first turn the template "wrong side" up, that is, according to the principle of mirror reflection.

Step 3. Now you need to prepare the side of the pillow.

  • Its length should be equal to the perimeter of the letter + 2 cm for allowances. You determine the width of the sidewall yourself, for example, it can be 4 cm, then, taking into account the 2 cm allowance for the seams, the width of the workpiece will be 6 cm.

But since you will most likely not be able to cut a whole strip of fabric, you will need to cut several strips of the same width and stitch them, so that in the end you get one ribbon of the desired length.

Step 4. Sew the sidewall to the first letter. To do this, we fold them facing each other and begin to grind along the entire perimeter of the workpiece.

  • For convenience, the side strip can be attached with pins.

We repeat the same procedure with the second half of the pillow, but leave a small section unfinished.
