DIY fireplace from a nightstand. False fireplace from an old sideboard. Using old furniture is an inexpensive way to create a false fireplace

The desire for comfort and coziness is inherent in each of us. Warm hearth and home- these are not empty words. What could be better than spending evenings by the fireplace watching the flames? Owners of private houses can afford a real fireplace, but for residents of city apartments this, unfortunately, is an unaffordable luxury. But for real masters nothing is impossible, and today we will tell you how to make a false fireplace in an apartment.

What is a false fireplace and why is it needed?

In a city apartment, conditions will not allow you to install a regular fireplace. The lack of chimneys and floors not designed for such loads are the main obstacles to obtaining permission to build such a structure. False fireplaces come to the rescue, which you can easily assemble yourself without any special skills. construction work.

Of course, you can buy an electric fireplace - such devices are now common, and their installation will not take much time and effort. But the creation of a fireplace with my own hands- a very exciting activity, it gives free rein to imagination, allows you to make an exclusive thing. In addition, an open fire in an apartment is not necessary (and you are unlikely to be allowed to do so), and a false fireplace will serve as a multifunctional decoration.

Note! Although you won't light a fire in a false fireplace, still don't put flammable things underneath. Especially if the structure covers heating radiators or you plan to place electrical appliances in the firebox.

False fireplace looks like a real one

Artificial fireplaces have the following advantages:

  • cheap - you only need money for materials;
  • availability of materials necessary for the manufacture of the structure;
  • the ability to change the decor at any time according to your mood;
  • use of inexpensive, but original and beautiful materials in decoration.

False fireplaces are divided into 3 groups:

  1. Reliable artificial fireplaces completely imitate real ones, respecting both dimensions and design principles. Inside the firebox you can install a bio-fireplace burner, which will provide an almost exact effect of a burning hearth. Quite an expensive option, but it looks the most plausible.
  2. Conventional false fireplaces have a portal protruding from the wall. They can be decorated according to your taste and desire. The combustion hole is usually filled with firewood or candles are placed there.
  3. Symbolic ones can be made from any materials. Their peculiarity is that they are not at all like an ordinary fireplace. It could even be a drawing made on the wall with some decorative elements.

Manufacturing options

For the manufacture of artificial fireplaces, the most simple materials, which can always be found not only in the store, but also at home:

  • drywall;
  • plywood;
  • Styrofoam;
  • cardboard;
  • tree;
  • brick;
  • polyurethane.

You can make such a structure even from old furniture, which has already served its purpose, but it’s a pity to throw it away.

This is the simplest and quick way. You only need to buy a polyurethane portal for the fireplace. The most difficult thing in this task will be choosing the style and size suitable for the room, and everything else will take you a minimum of time and effort.

If you want to install an electric fireplace, take into account its installation and dimensions, method of connection to the electrical network and quality of ventilation.

The lightweight body of the false fireplace made of polyurethane will save you from many installation hassles

You will need:

  • polyurethane portal for the fireplace;
  • contact glue;
  • putty;
  • materials for finishing the firebox (for example, decorative brick).

Now we’ll tell you step by step how to install such a fireplace.

  1. The best place to install such a fireplace is one of the side walls of the room. The structure should not clutter the room or interfere with passage.
  2. If you decide to place an electric fireplace or decorative electric lighting inside the portal, take care of the wiring and socket first.
  3. Make the firebox frame from profiles or wooden blocks, and the walls from plywood or plasterboard.
  4. Install the portal, carefully secure it with contact glue. Carefully fill the gaps between the portal and the firebox with finishing putty.
  5. Finish the firebox in the style you choose, or install an electric fireplace. If desired, you can install a mantel made of artificial stone or wood.

Such portals are made not only from polyurethane, but also from wood. They are much more expensive, but among them you can find real masterpieces, additionally equipped, for example, with a built-in bar.

Plywood construction

This idea comes in handy if you need to hide some flaw in the room, e.g. old radiator heating, the replacement of which will be expensive. A false fireplace will come in handy here.

The need to cover up the old heating radiator - a great opportunity install a false fireplace

Carry out calculations and make a drawing of the future structure. This will help you avoid wasting extra money and time.

Drawing of a standard fireplace

Note! When you develop a drawing, refer to ready-made options for stone fireplaces. Based on them, you can easily design your false fireplace.

First of all, install the frame directly in place. Wooden blocks are suitable for it.

Frame made of bars for a false fireplace

Next, cover the frame with plywood. Fireplace design and appearance can be adjusted during operation. For example, you can add a podium to the portal. Inside the structure there is heating battery, so it is better to assemble the frame with screws: nails in conditions high temperature do not guarantee a tight fit of plywood to the bars in the future.

Frame covered with plasterboard

Along the back wall, attach a firebox that imitates a fireplace to a block. Cover all surfaces visible from the outside with self-adhesive film.

Install the firebox and cover it with film

Cover the corners of the portal with a wooden layout, and cover it with film of the same color.

The corners of the portal need to be closed and also covered with film.

This design is easily removable (it is not attached to the wall at this stage), and you can easily access the radiator. The firebox needs to be decorated with something, so you can put a metal mesh tray on the radiator.

A metal mesh tray that will become the bottom of the firebox

You will fill it with pebbles, firewood or other decorative elements.

Fill in metal mesh pebbles or other filler

You can order a fireplace grate or make it yourself. For this you will need a copper profile. If this is not available, aluminum wire inserted into a vinyl chloride tube and painted with gold paint will do. This grille is attached to the fireplace body with copper wire in 4 places.

The pipes that go to the battery can be covered with an extension of the podium.

So that useful space does not go to waste, create a bar under the fireplace mantel.

Using extra space

As a result, you will get a fireplace like this, almost indistinguishable from the real thing.

Imitation of a fireplace made of plasterboard

This time we will consider the option of a corner false fireplace made of plasterboard. This task will be more difficult than the previous ones. Why exactly corner fireplace? Because in conditions small apartment the corner is the freest place, which is ideal for installing such a structure.

Corner false fireplace made of plasterboard

So, you will need the following materials:

  • metal profile - 13 pcs;
  • moisture-resistant plasterboard 9.5 mm - 3 sheets;
  • tiles - 5 m;
  • self-tapping screws - 200 pcs;
  • tile grout;
  • LED Strip Light;
  • decorative lattice.
  1. Calculate the dimensions. Please note: if you need to close the battery, you need to do it in such a way that it can be easily reached. For possible emergency situations It is better to run the battery through the lower opening.

    Approximate diagram of a corner fireplace

  2. After the calculations have been made and the fireplace diagram has been drawn up, begin installing the frame. Good for him ceiling profile, and it's also cheaper.
  3. Immediately make electrical wiring for the lighting. As you can see in the first photo, in our case there are three output points: two on the facade and one above the shelf. LED strip is used as backlight.
  4. The combustion hole can be made with double walls. Non-flammable insulation will be laid between them.

    Finishing a false fireplace with decorative tiles

  5. For decorative finishing, you can use stone-like tiles. It is made of plaster, so it is not suitable for work surfaces.

This fireplace takes up approximately 1.6 square meters. You can place a small electric fireplace or a small alcohol burner inside the firebox.

Finishing

It is very important that the fireplace fits harmoniously into the interior of the room. You should carefully choose the style and color. But also decorative finishing should please the eye and create comfort.

How to simulate fire in a fireplace? Above, we offered options with LED strip, which provides illumination with a burning effect. But progress does not stand still, and an electronic photo frame can serve you well. It is a liquid crystal display that is designed to display pictures. You need a model that can play animated files, such as GIFs. Upload an image of a burning fire to your photo frame and enjoy!

  • Many owners of false fireplaces love to decorate niches with candles. different heights. It looks beautiful, stylish, and gives a real live fire.
  • An excellent choice would be to install a mirror deep in the combustion chamber, on the wall. The mirror will multiply the reflections from candles or electric lighting and add mystery to the fireplace.
  • Artificial stone will help you achieve the effect of an expensive finish. It is available in a variety of color and texture options. Tiles, bas-reliefs and decorative tiles will give expressive individuality to the structure. But don’t overdo it: excessive pomp may be out of place in your interior.
  • Doors for false fireplaces will probably be superfluous, but if you decide to install them, make them from plexiglass. They can be transparent or tinted, but they simply must allow light and glare of the “fire” to pass through.
  • It is better to decorate the firebox of an imitation fireplace with a forged metal grate. It can be bought or ordered from the workshop.

As you can see, building a fireplace at home yourself is not at all difficult, and it’s also cheap, especially if it’s just an imitation. Accuracy, attention, the desire to do something original and creative imagination - that’s all you need to enjoy comfort, like the heroes of classic films. Share with us your experience in implementing such ideas, or ask any questions you have on this topic. Easy work for you and comfort for your home!

Once upon a time there was a polished sideboard. He faithfully served his masters since the 70s of the last century - he stored sets and crystal. The owner carefully wiped the dust off it, trying not to scratch it. But as the years went by, she appeared in the house New furniture and the sideboard was no longer needed.

But it’s not our rule to throw anything away! We decided to make a fireplace out of the sideboard!
They took the top, mirror part, took out the glass and the glass shelf, and put it on its side.

Screwed two bars...

And two pieces of plywood on top and bottom, strengthening them with bars too, so that the fireplace has “thickness”

They cut out a “blower” in the door with a jigsaw - here, as in a real fireplace, firewood will be stored.

The fireplace also needs a mantelpiece and a pedestal on which it will stand. Here we have fitted two headboards from the bed. All that remains is to unscrew the legs.

In fact, the body of the fireplace is ready - all that remains is to decorate

We bought polystyrene “stucco” - cornice, plinth. Bought plastic panels under the brick. We bought lighting for the fireplace - an LED strip. It all took about a thousand rubles. We lightly sanded and scratched the polish, puttyed it where necessary, and painted it with white acrylic paint. They glued “bricks” and “stucco”.

Designed a portal

We did the electrical work.

They poured shells into the fireplace that had once been brought from the sea.

We put up Ikea candles. The fireplace is ready!

A false fireplace can be built from various available materials, so after repairs you should not throw away the remains of drywall, plywood, polystyrene foam and profiles. Even old furniture, which, as you may think, will no longer be suitable for anything, is suitable for making a decorative dummy.

Artificial fireplaces - types of designs and decor options

Don’t rush to make with your own hands exactly the same fake fireplace as your friends or neighbors. The fact is that artificial structures, compared to real structures, have many manufacturing options. In addition, decorative fireplaces are usually divided into three groups:

  1. 1. Reliable - completely imitate the real thing.
  2. 2. Conditional - similar to real ones, equipped with a firebox.
  3. 3. Symbolic - a cardboard dummy or a 3D drawing on the wall.

The first version of an artificial fireplace resembles a natural indoor fireplace not only in shape and size, but also in the ability to arrange its combustion chamber in such a way that there are reflections of fire in it. Of course it's not real. The hearth is very simply imitated using an electric or bio-fireplace. The conditional false hearth has Not standard sizes and is a portal protruding from the wall, equipped with a small combustion chamber. The firebox is decorated with an electric fireplace, LED backlight or decorative candles.

Fireplace dummy

Symbolic decorative designs– this is a kind of “hearth of Papa Carlo”. They are completely different from the first two options. Most often they are a decorative border or just an image on the wall. When constructing a dummy fireplace, you can focus on finished drawing a standard stone fireplace, or you can make your own based on it. Here's what a diagram of a simple, but at the same time real fireplace might look like:

The external finishing of the portal of an artificial fireplace can be done various materials, for example, using plastic, ceramics, metal or glass. The main thing is that the selected product fits harmoniously into the overall interior design. If we're talking about about installing an electric fireplace in the combustion chamber, then for the manufacture of such a structure it is recommended to use only non-combustible building materials and decorative elements.

As for decor options, you can give a false fireplace a more believable look by placing logs in the combustion chamber. A fireplace with a semicircular firebox, where firewood is stacked on a grate, under which a fiery backlight is built, will look especially attractive. Usually, if you need to add zest and functionality, the combustion chamber is made in the form of a minibar or bookshelf.

Assembling a dummy from an old closet

By making a fireplace from an old sideboard or wardrobe, you will hardly disturb your budget. Consider the option of designing an artificial fireplace from a sideboard:

  1. 1. Remove the doors from the top of the sideboard and make a blank out of it (we remove the lower cabinet, we won’t need it).
  2. 2. Turn the workpiece on its side so that there is a wide compartment with a mirror at the top, and a narrow one at the bottom.
  3. 3. We cover the façade of the mirror compartment with plywood around the perimeter so that the product begins to resemble a portal with a firebox.
  4. 4. The narrow compartment will act as a firewood box; for this purpose, we cut out a semicircular window in the removed door and install it back, like plywood, using self-tapping screws.
  5. 5. Using a grinding machine, we process all sides of the future fireplace, especially its polished parts, which will increase their adhesive properties.
  6. 6. After sanding, apply an adhesive-based primer to all surfaces. As soon as the layer dries, we carry out puttying work.
  7. 7. After the putty film has dried, sand it with sandpaper. The product is almost ready for decoration, all that remains is to paint it with acrylic paint.
  8. 8. We cover the corners of the portal artificial tiles, decorate with stucco, and arrange a wooden shelf on top of the fireplace.

We organize the firebox. We install an LED strip with fire-colored lighting along its perimeter, and fill the bottom with pebbles. If desired, install candles inside the firebox.

Instructions for constructing a fireplace from gypsum plasterboard

It is much more difficult to build an artificial fireplace from gypsum fiber panels than from gypsum fiber panels, but the result is more reliable. The dummy can be placed either near the wall or in the corner. It is better to initially arrange the surface of the decoration in the form of a stable shelf for books or figurines. To make the project more realistic, the sketch also needs to include a protrusion under chimney. Example with a chimney:

Assembly from gypsum board

A copy of a real portal must have real dimensions, so when creating a sketch, the area and interior of the room must be taken into account.

For the manufacture of fake fireplace must be purchased metallic profile, you can use wooden beams, drywall and decorative materials. For obvious reasons artificial fireplace does not require a foundation, so first of all, taking into account the width of the profile, we mark the portal on the wall. Then follow the instructions below:

  1. 1. To obtain the base of the fireplace, cut the guide profile to desired length and fix it to the floor.
  2. 2. When installing the rack profile, we control its verticality with a plumb line. We attach the profile to the supporting base using dowels every 200-300 mm.
  3. 3. The next step will help strengthen the structure; we install jumpers. Will do wooden beam or rack profile.
  4. 4. Using a clamp profile, we construct the frame of the false hearth from the base to the chimney.
  5. 5. We cover the structure with plasterboard.

First of all, we install large segments of panels, which we cut out by making markings according to the drawing. Adjustment of sheets to the required parameters should be done on flat surface using a ruler and knife. Drywall, in order to adapt the material to temperature conditions, should lie down for at least a day in the room in which the fireplace will be built. We apply a ruler to the cutting line, then draw it along the top layer of drywall with the tip of a knife and break it along the line we made. We cut the sheet in the same way with reverse side. We process the cut edges with fine sandpaper. We close the seams formed after installing the sheets according to the scheme: gypsum putty– serpyanka – putty.

Since the design of a room fireplace is not complete without shaped elements, you need to learn how to bend. To do this, we make holes in a segment of the material with an awl, and in order to soak the product, we water it upper layer water. Then we fix the element in the desired position, and after drying we attach it to the frame. If the fireplace dummy is built in a room with high level humidity or its decoration will be done with a water-based emulsion, then the surface of the drywall should be treated with a moisture-resistant primer.

Finishing the firebox and firewood with ceramic tiles

The combustion chamber of an artificial fireplace can be finished with tiles, mirror elements, applying decorative plaster or wallpaper. Consider the option with ceramic tiles. Facing products can have any shape, be plain or have a pattern. If necessary, the tiles are cut into segments using a tile cutter. Before finishing works Drywall must be primed, which will increase the adhesive properties of the material.

The tiles are mounted on a plasterboard surface using a cement-based adhesive. The process develops as follows:

  1. 1. Apply the adhesive to the tiles with a notched spatula and level it, and the layer thickness should not exceed 5 mm.
  2. 2. The first row begins to be laid out from one of the lower corners of the fireplace.
  3. 3. All subsequent rows are installed using plastic crosses, which will allow you to obtain identical and even seams over the entire area of the masonry. The work process is controlled at the construction level.
  4. 4. After 1-2 days (this time is quite enough for the glue to mature), grout the joints.

Firewood is finished using the same principle. The corners of the portal are decorated with wood, the rest with artificial stone, which fits perfectly with ceramics. The shelf above the fireplace can also be made of wood. An artificially aged surface will look very beautiful. The dummy fireplace is ready, all that remains is to add an artificial fire to the firebox, and place a porcelain set, figurines or antique clocks on the shelf.

A fireplace can make even the most dull room interior much cozier and more comfortable. But such a pleasure is quite expensive, and it is not always possible to install something like this in an apartment. But there is a way out. You can make a false fireplace with your own hands of absolutely any shape and size, and it is so simple that the process itself will not take much time and will not require special skills.

Can a fireplace be artificial?

A false fireplace is a structure that looks like a real fireplace, but without a chimney. In some cases, this is simply an element of room decor, in other cases there is still an element of simulating a live flame, for example, as in electrical installations.

A false fireplace can be an excellent decor in a room of any size

The main advantages of this design can be considered absolute safety (unless, of course, you decide to install a lot of candles in the portal) and low cost compared to a real fireplace. In addition, there are other advantages of false fireplaces:

  • it is allowed to be installed even in an apartment, while a real fireplace is prohibited from being installed in an apartment building;
  • with its help you can disguise the defects and shortcomings of the room, for example, hide a radiator or pipe, and also advantageously use the so-called blind areas, for example, a corner;
  • On top and on the sides you can arrange shelves for decoration and storage of various small items;
  • emphasize the stylistic direction of the room’s design, for example, when choosing a baroque or other classical style.

A false fireplace would be appropriate even in a children's room

Types of structures

There are several types of false fireplaces that you can install in your own apartment:

There is another classification, which is based on the installation location of such a structure:

  • suspension;
  • wall;
  • angular;
  • built-in;
  • insular.

What can be made from

If you are a fan of making crafts, then to make a decorative fireplace you can use absolutely any building material, including the following that is suitable for it:

  1. Brick. It allows you to create an artificial hearth that is as close to the real one as possible. For installation, you can choose decorative or facing bricks. The disadvantages of this design are its significant weight, which means that it can be installed only after checking the ceiling’s ability to withstand such weight. However, there are also advantages besides naturalness. Such a false fireplace does not need to be lined with anything.

    The brick false fireplace is as similar as possible to the real one

  2. Plates with laminated coating. Before using this material, you must make a drawing on which you must indicate all dimensions future design. The drawing is needed in order to cut the material. They also have similar properties. chipboard sheets, however, such a design requires further finishing, for example, with foam “bricks”.

    A fireplace made of sheets with a laminated coating looks very laconic

  3. Polyurethane. As a rule, this material is used for finishing already finished design. However, special parts, such as moldings, platbands and half-columns, can be glued directly to the wall and decorated accordingly. Using decor and trying different techniques with illumination, it can be turned into an unusual piece of furniture. There is another advantage - if desired, such a fireplace can be repainted in any color. This allows you to update the interior with minimal investment in a short time.

    A polyurethane fireplace can simply be glued to the wall

  4. Drywall. This material is most popular for the manufacture of false fireplaces. It has undoubted advantages - ease of assembly and combination with other finishing materials. If desired, the plasterboard structure can be decorated in any style, which means it will be suitable for any interior. In addition, you can build a structure of any complexity. An artificial hearth can be deep, with a square or round portal, with columns or minimalist. You can change the cladding without disassembling the entire structure, which is very convenient.

    Most often, a false fireplace is made of plasterboard

  5. Tree. Using this material, you can make a false fireplace, which will be part of a furniture set, which means it will be made in the same style as the entire design of the room.

    A wooden false fireplace can be artificially aged

In addition to those listed, you can also use available materials to make a false fireplace, for example, cardboard boxes or old furniture.

Drawings with dimensions

The dimensions of the structure largely depend directly on the area of the room where it will be installed. For example, corner installation for a small room it can have a depth of 330 mm and a length of 1,300 mm.

A small room can also be decorated with a wall-mounted false fireplace. In this case, it is recommended to reduce the dimensions of the structure slightly, for example, to make a portal with parameters of 1,360*500*1,050 mm.

In a small room you can install a wall-mounted or hanging fireplace

When installing a false fireplace in a medium-sized room, more possibilities arise:

  • you can make a more massive structure, decorating it with additional decorative elements, for example, columns and stucco;
  • it is allowed to use not only shelves, but also tabletops, but only if the partition is able to withstand such a structure;
  • You can place an artificial fireplace in the center of the room, and not just near the wall.

The drawing must indicate the dimensions of each part

When decorating a room in classic style a false fireplace can be massive with appropriate decorations. For example, the dimensions of the lower part can be 1,500 mm, the upper - 1,490 mm, and the depth - 345 mm.

If you want an artificial fireplace to look attractive, expensive, and high-status, then it is recommended to use artificial and natural stone, forged elements, valuable wood.

IN big room a false fireplace can be installed in the center of the room

When making a copy of a fireplace for a large living room, you can follow the following rules:

  • island arrangement, thanks to which you can create a very massive and unusual structure that will perform several functions at once;
  • you cannot use a suspended structure;
  • the partition for a wall-mounted false fireplace must be such that it does not deform under the influence of heavy weight designs.

A false fireplace can also look like a home stove

How to make a false fireplace with your own hands - step-by-step instructions

You can make a fake fireplace with your own hands from any building material. It all depends on your imagination and financial capabilities.
