Pskov-Pechersk Icon of the Mother of God "Tenderness"

Memorial days: Week 7 after Easter (after the Ascension of the Lord), May 21 / June 3, June 23 / July 6, August 26 / September 8, October 7/20

The Pskov-Pechersk Icon of the Mother of God "Tenderness" was written and brought to the Pskov-Pechersk monastery by the Pskov merchants Vasily and Theodore around 1521. She was especially famous for miraculous healings in 1524. This holy icon and the holy icon "Assumption" became famous in 1581 during the siege of Pskov by the Polish king Stephen Bathory. A few days before the siege of Pskov by the Poles, the Most Holy Theotokos miraculously appeared to the pious elder Dorotheos, warned him of the impending disaster, explaining the reason for the misfortune that befell people for their sins and showing the way out of it. Then the archbishop summoned the Abbot of the Pskov-Caves Monastery Tikhon with the Pechersk icons of "Assumption" and "Tenderness" to perform prayers at the places indicated by the Mother of God herself during her appearance. The enemy, who had stormed the Pskov Kremlin thirty times for five months, retreated without taking the city.

In memory of this event, the miraculous icon of the Mother of God "Tenderness" was carried annually in the seventh week after Easter in a procession from the Pskov-Caves monastery to Pskov "to the holy and great cathedral apostolic church of the Most Holy and Life-giving and Inseparable Trinity - so that the coming birth would not forget the victory over the enemy thanks to that miraculous icon - in the city of Pskov. " The festival for the icon "Tenderness" was established on October 7/20 to commemorate the deliverance of Pskov from the invasion of Napoleon in 1812.

Martyrs Adrian and Natalia

Spouses Adrian and Natalia lived in the city of Nicomedia in the Bithyn region of Asia Minor. Hadrian was a pagan and served as an official of the emperor Maximian Galerius (305-311), the persecutor of Christians. Natalia was a secret Christian. During the persecutions near Nicomedia, 23 believers were hiding in a cave. They were caught, tried, tortured and forced to sacrifice to idols. Then they were taken to the court of justice to have their names written down. Here was the head of the ward, Adrian, who asked them what reward they expected from their God for torment. They answered him: “The eyes did not see, the ear did not hear, and that which God prepared for those who love Him did not come to the heart of a man” (1 Cor. 2: 9). Hearing this, Adrian said to the scribes: "Write down my name with them, therefore, that I am a Christian." Adrian was sent to prison. The emperor advised him to delete his name from the list of Christians and ask for forgiveness. Adrian assured him that he was not distraught, but that he did so out of his own conviction. Then he turned 28 years old.

Upon learning of what had happened, Natalia rushed to prison, where she encouraged Adrian to be courageous. When the Christian prisoners were sentenced to death, Adrian was allowed to go home for a short time so that he would inform his wife about it. Seeing Adrian, Natalia was afraid that he had denied Christ and would not let him into the house.

Returning to prison, Adrian, along with other martyrs, was subjected to terrible tortures: the martyrs' hands and feet were cut off with a heavy hammer, as a result of which they died in terrible torment. When it came to Adrian's turn, the wife was most of all afraid that her husband would not be fainthearted and would deny Christ. She strengthened Adrian and held his arms and legs while the executioner interrupted them with a hammer. Saint Adrian died along with the rest of the martyrs in 304. When their bodies began to be burned, a thunderstorm arose and the furnace went out, while several executioners were killed by lightning.

The commander of the army wanted to marry Natalia, who was still young and wealthy. Even before the death of Adrian, Natalia asked him to pray that she would not be forced to marry. Now Adrian appeared to her in a dream and said that soon she would follow him. And so it happened: Natalia died on the coffin of her husband on the outskirts of the city of Byzantium (Byzantium (Byzantium) - the future Constantinople, the capital of Byzantium), where the believers transferred his body.
