5050 SMD - SMD LEDs

Most of the latest generation lighting fixtures use surface mount LEDs - SMD LEDs as sources. They can vary in power, size, parameters. But among the entire assortment, it is worth highlighting 5050 SMD LEDs, the technical parameters of which we will study.

general information

This version is available exclusively in a square case with a thickness of 1.6 mm and dimensions of 5x5 mm. The specified information in the form of marking is applied to the body itself and is additionally indicated in the passport.

Unlike all other types of LEDs, the smd 5050 led module includes 3 sources at once, which can be:

  • white - super-bright powerful lamps, on which the thinnest layer of phosphor is applied ;;
  • colored - colors may differ depending on the type of module. A phosphor layer is also applied;
  • colored - RGB 5050 of red, green and blue colors.

For reference. What is a phosphor? It is a chemical compound capable of storing light memory and converting absorbed thermal energy into radiation.

All lighting fixtures are luminescent, that is, they absorb the light of the lamp and convert it into a glow similar to the sun. The color temperature can vary from 2800 ° K to 12000 ° K depending on the type of lamp. For information, the color temperature of the Sun is 5000 ° K.

SMD 5050 color sources emit only one color, which is why they are called monochrome - it can be warm yellow, red, green or blue.

Monochrome sources

The RGB SMD configuration already consists of LEDs of three colors at once - red (R), green (G) and blue (B), which, when turned on, give out white light. By adjusting the intensity of each individual element, any color from the spectrum visible to the human eye can be obtained.

How to determine the color by marking

Each device of this type reflects certain information, which contains information about the type, color, color temperature and wavelength.

In this case, the designation "xx" contains information about the color temperature in Kelvin (see degrees in the figure) and the length of the light wave.

Design features

The parameters of the product are always the same - the case is 5x5x1.6 mm, square. In most cases, they are made of heat-resistant plastic, single models are made of glass. On the reverse side of the frame there are outputs of LED-lamps, between which metal substrates are fixed for uniform heat dissipation.

Without the metal substrate of the chip, the lamps will start to overheat and fail.

In order to understand the output, the engineers developed a special led switch in the form of a beveled corner pointing to the cathode. The crystal cover lens is made from an optically clear epoxy potting and potting compound.

Technical indicators

The 5050 LED, whose characteristics are not uniform, is included in the range of all manufacturers specializing in ice lighting. The only common parameter is only the shape of the case - a square, and its dimensions - 5x5x1.6 mm. All other indicators depend on the type and color of the lamp itself. Let's highlight only limited technical characteristics (permissible limit):

  • consumed current - up to 25 mA;
  • voltage difference - 1.8-3.4 V;
  • flow rate - 500-4500 mKd;
  • radiation angle - 90-120 °;
  • maximum temperature - 60 ° С.

When buying such products, it is imperative to pay attention to the technical parameters. Serious large manufacturers very accurately and clearly give all the comprehensive information, while some predominantly Chinese companies, on the contrary, greatly distort it.

If ice lamps are needed for mass purchase, and the datasheet is in doubt, we recommend carrying out photometric tests for several individual samples.

Even in the same batch, technical parameters can vary significantly, not to mention the products of different companies. Regardless of the number of LEDs, try to order them from the same supplier and at the same time.

White and colored LED strips

The flux intensity, temperature and wavelength allowed to expand the scope of the SMD 5050 and make LED strips based on them. They can also be white, monochrome (color), or RGB. This option is simply hugely popular, since the combination allows you to simplify installation and reduce installation time. At the same time, it is not recommended to connect a tape without an RGB controller.

Which is better - 5050 or 5730

It is difficult to answer this question, since this is an option - which is better - warm or soft. The power of the 5730 is several orders of magnitude higher - in the finished design, each LED looks like a separate bright point. 5050, on the contrary, precisely due to the reduced power, gives a uniform glow, which is visually perceived as an integral strip.

The 5730 output also differs, so it is rational to use such sources for separate lamps, lamps and even spotlights. This type of module is not suitable for the manufacture of LED strips.

Smd LEDs in terms of the scheme and connection method do not differ from similar samples. The voltage on each individual element is 3.5V, respectively, it is necessary to connect only in series with the obligatory use of the corresponding resistor.

When connected in parallel, taking into account the difference in parameters, the whole will take on one LED and will quickly burn out. Then the next one will come and so on until the end. Serial connection only.

There is a difference in connecting monochrome and RGB samples. If the first ones connect each module sequentially in order, then in the second - also sequentially, but each separate color from 3 modules at once. In both cases, it is imperative to use a current-quenching resistor - one for each circuit.

This connection method has only one drawback - if one LED is out of order, the whole circuit goes out. The same is observed if the resistor is burned out. It reminds of the old Soviet garlands, when you had to ring each paw in search of a burnt-out one.

How to solder correctly

In production, point soldering is not practiced, only the whole set at once. There is no such possibility at home, so you can use a soldering iron, taking into account the following:

  • the temperature of the tip is not higher than 300 °;
  • body temperature at the time of soldering up to 260 °;
  • contact time - 7-9 seconds;
  • before starting work, determine the polarity.

Someone is trying to connect the ice elements with a hairdryer, but to be honest, the idea is not the most successful, especially since you will have to look for a low-temperature solder paste. The coverage area is too large, the soldering iron in this case works more jewelry.

In conclusion, we note that although the characteristics of the smd 5050 diodes are inferior to modern samples, they are not removed from production. There are no more lamps and lamps based on them, in the main production has switched to the production of LED strips with such elements. They show good technical and energy results, therefore they remain in demand and popular in the household and entertainment sector.
