How to securely attach a heavy shelf to a plasterboard wall. Fastening a shelf to plasterboard, what load can it withstand? Fastening a shelf to a plasterboard wall

Drywall is often used in construction and renovation work. It allows without plastering works get beautiful smooth walls, create any decorative elements, produce high-quality finishing ceiling.

GCRs are indispensable when designing arches and creating various shapes. The material is affordable and easy to install, but it also has some technical features. One of them is related to securing heavy objects.

Peculiarities

Of course, you can hang a not too heavy shelf on a plasterboard wall by drilling through the sheets. The dowel fits freely over its entire length into the hole directly in the wall. Then the self-tapping screws are tightened and the shelf is held on them.

However, it is not so easy to attach elements of large mass to a sheet of such material. Traditional methods they don't work here. For example, on a wall covered with gypsum board up to 12 mm thick, it is very difficult to fix heating radiator, china cabinet or other heavy device. The fasteners may simply break out of the casing. If you try to hang shelves on a wall finished with plasterboard, they may fall along with all the contents and partly with the sheathing.

The plasterboard wall can support up to 55 kg of weight on each mount, but at the same time they must be correctly selected. Screwing screws into the structure is not enough; you will have to use dowels.

It is worth considering that they cannot be used repeatedly, since the reliability of fastening is noticeably reduced when tightening them again.

How to attach?

The problem of attaching heavy objects to drywall can be solved using one of several methods.

They are:

  • installation of appropriate supports and fasteners under the installed object;
  • preliminary installation under the cladding of embedded walls;
  • combination of mortgages with fastening hardware.

If renovation work are not planned in the near future, then dismantling the wall is not the best option. Objects can be mounted using fasteners without the use of mortgages. The main thing is to choose exactly the hardware that can cope with the expected loads.

In such cases, fasteners are used in the form:

  • metal-to-metal self-tapping screws for plasterboard sheets;
  • butterfly dowels with self-tapping screws;
  • auger dowels with self-tapping screws;
  • umbrella-type dowels with bolts;
  • Harmut Knauf dowels with bolts.

To strengthen sheets on profiles, they are used ordinary self-tapping screws that can hold a load within 3 kg. This means that such a screw can be used to hang something like a mirror, a clock or a picture, or secure baseboards. Increased strength is achieved by hanging it on several loops.

Increases strength and butterfly dowel. If the wall is sheathed with one layer of material, such a mount will support a weight of up to 10 kg. It can be used to attach a small shelf or lamp to drywall. As in the previous case, the stability of the fastener increases when using several spaced dowels.

The fastener consists of nylon and has ribs for rigid fixation. This prevents rotation, and when the screw is screwed in, the structure opens in two directions, like the wings of a butterfly. They rest against the skin from the inside, distribute the load and hold a chandelier or other object.

Nylon fasteners equipped with a screw-type thread are called “driva”. It is tightened with a nozzle of the same name and can withstand a load of 25-30 kg. This allows you to secure the cornice with curtains.

The Molly dowel allows you to attach even large kitchen cabinets to a plasterboard wall. This is metal hardware with a screw and has side slots. It is installed with special pliers. You need to make a hole in the drywall that matches the diameter of the dowel, and then insert the fastener by bending the wings and tightening the screw.

The screw type of fastening in combination with a self-tapping screw does not require a hole in the wall. The fastener holds approximately 6 kg on the skin in one layer and up to 15 kg in two layers. This option is suitable for portraits and baguettes.

The “umbrella” type dowel is a variation of the “butterfly” made of metal. It includes a block and a spacer that opens like an umbrella when twisted.

If the hardware is installed correctly, the load on each of the fasteners can be up to 35 kg, and with more of them, the weight of the items can be increased. This is how hangers and not too heavy pieces of furniture are attached.

Using the Harmut dowel from Knauf, cabinets, drawers or other objects weighing up to 35 kg can be attached to a single layer of cladding. How larger number hardware, the higher the permissible load.

Installation of the dowel requires drilling a hole with a diameter of 13 mm, inserting the dowel with the spacer part assembled, pulling the fasteners back. The spacer structure is sewn to the gypsum board from the inside out. Further plastic part fixed on outside Using a clamp, the excess breaks off. Then a bolt is screwed in to secure the hanging loops or hardware.

This method is also suitable for fairly heavy things, such as a sink or cabinet. But structures weighing more than 100 kg are attached exclusively to walls sheathed in two or three layers.

The diameter of the fastener must be selected taking into account the weight of the objects for which it will be used. Thanks to well-chosen dowels, you can ensure a strong connection to the plasterboard wall of almost any element of furniture and decor. To calculate the fastening, you need to add the thickness of the plasterboard to the distance to the wall, and then add the same indicator to ensure a margin of fixation. Points are marked on the surface of the wall by drilling through them. The concrete drill must go deep into the wall to the calculated distance.

How to make mortgages?

If you have to secure heavy objects weighing over 50 kg (boiler, water heater, etc.) to drywall, you can do this using embeds. In this case, the installation is carried out not to the gypsum board, but to the rough wall, on which the mortgages are fixed. Here you will need a hammer drill, as well as a dowel, screws or dowel-nails. For foam or aerated concrete blocks, the bars are fastened to metal “crocodiles”. Ordinary dowels will not hold in fragile material, especially under load.

Thus, the mortgages must be placed under the sheathing, i.e. this must be done before sheathing with plasterboard. If the dimensions of the bookmarks do not fully fit the hinges on the item being installed, you can use a combined method.

Installation of mortgages includes several stages:

  • After assembling the frame, select the location where you plan to install the item.
  • Cut the bars according to the thickness of the guides between the profiles.
  • Secure them using dowel nails or anchor bolts to the profiles or wall.
  • From the side, connect the bars to the profile using self-tapping screws.
  • Cover the frame with plasterboard.

When the wall decoration is completed, strengthen the cabinet, kitchen set, or any other large objects using screws. Even the horizontal bar will hold tightly in such bars.

In order to get into the bars rather than empty space when hanging equipment, it is better to photograph them at the installation stage. They usually have a size of 40x50 mm or 70x40 mm, depending on the metal frame.

The bars should not be too thin so that the drywall is not pressed through. Also, bars that are too thin can lead to unnecessary bulges.

By determining the location of the item in advance, you can place the embeds correctly. The bars are mounted in such a way that each side is inserted into the profile. This makes it possible to increase the rigidity of the structure. The ends of the profiles can be bent if necessary, and subsequently they can be fastened with self-tapping screws. The mortgages are secured with butterfly dowels, recessing the screw heads into the board. You can use an anchor with a countersunk head.

Hang heavy equipment by screwing long screws into the wall without mortgages. In this case, excessive load is created on the fasteners. Over time, this can lead to deformation of the fastenings or the wall itself.

Attaching accessories in the bathroom

The installation of equipment in the bathroom deserves special attention. Attaching the mixer here is not as easy as on brick or concrete. A water socket helps simplify the process. To securely fasten the fitting into the hollow wall, traverses are installed(special plates with holes). Structurally, they may differ, so you will have to find best option for attaching a water socket. This approach allows you to firmly secure the structure that leads out the pipes for the heated towel rail or mixer.

When marking the sink and taps, it should be taken into account that horizontal level taps should exceed the height of the sides of the sink by 20-25 cm. The tap that ensures the flow of water into the toilet cistern is placed at a height of 80 cm, for a shower net - at least at a height of 210 cm.

Heated towel rails are attached to the plasterboard wall by reinforcement with profiles. This requires preliminary marking. Due to the self-tapping screw screwed into the profile, the equipment will be fixed to the wall and will not create unnecessary load on the casing.

Using profiles – a good option fastenings decorative shelves and other elements for drywall.

Such work is performed in a certain order:

  1. The location is determined on the surface of the skin metal profile. It is convenient to use a magnet for this.
  2. The gypsum board is stitched through with a metal screw. A self-tapping screw 5-6 cm longer than the sheet itself is used.
  3. Using a screwdriver, the object is attached to the wall surface, the screws go through.

This method is used to secure small objects, but not serious equipment. U kitchen cabinets There are usually eyelets at the top. If these fasteners do not coincide with the location of the profile, the eyelet can be removed and moved to a more suitable location. Since drywall is not a load-bearing material, you can make holes larger than the diameter of the screw.

Wall panels often finished with decorative film to provide an attractive look and texture. In this regard, screws in drywall need to be screwed after final finishing panels. By attaching it to the frame, the strength of the connections is ensured, and the gypsum board creates a smooth and beautiful wall.

If the drywall is mounted with a special adhesive with minimum distance from the wall (or the sheathing is made on a frame located close to the wall), You can use anchor screws to secure the necessary things.. To do this, markings are applied, holes are made along it and anchors are driven in. The screws are fixed in the wall by tightening.

Ten years ago, there were few places where you could find an apartment or house with plasterboard walls, but now it’s difficult to find housing without them. Redevelopment or construction of new partitions - gypsum plasterboard is best suited for this. Naturally, the question arises of how to hang anything on drywall, be it a cabinet or shelf, a TV, a picture or any other element of interior decoration. This is exactly what this article will be about.

What can drywall withstand?

If the wall is sheathed with a standard gypsum board sheet with a thickness of 12.5 mm, and the frame is standard with a rack installation pitch of 600 mm, then you can expect that the fastening at one point can withstand up to 50 kg of load. It is assumed that this is a constant load, without any permanent vibrations or deformations.

With multi-point fastening, the same 12.5 mm drywall can withstand up to 50 kg/m. sq. In reality, this means that you can hang a shelf on plasterboard or a wall cabinet with two mounts spaced a meter apart for a total load of up to 80 kg. The weight of the shelf itself and everything that can be placed on it is taken into account.

Mounting the TV on a special holder involves mounting at 3-4 points, but at the same time they are located close to each other, so the total load still does not exceed 50-60 kg. Taking into account the load when turning and positioning the TV, the weight of the entire structure should not exceed 40 kg.

To secure indoor unit air conditioner, you cannot do without preliminary strengthening of the frame under the plasterboard, otherwise you must first secure the frame base in which the fastenings distribute the load into at least two square meters, and then attach the block to it. All this is explained by the presence of vibration during operation of the air conditioner.

What to fasten with what, what hardware is used

For drywall, special fastenings have been developed taking into account the thickness of the material. Under no circumstances should you use ordinary dowels or chops, which would push the material in the hole. Let's first look at an example of how to hang a cabinet on drywall. It most often has two fastenings along the edges of the upper edge in the shape of ears that cling to a pin in the wall or are screwed with a bolt or self-tapping screw with a press washer.

Two types of fastening can be used:

  • Molly metal dowel;

  • Plastic dowel TNF*W “Butterfly”.

They have a wide edge outside, or a puck. WITH reverse side, which is inserted into a hole in the wall, there is an expanding part; when a bolt or screw is screwed in, the outermost part of the dowel is pressed against the sheet and bends the consoles to the sides. The result is tight contact around the hole.

The force on the fulcrum should be directed strictly downward; any lateral directions will contribute to the destruction of the plaster and weakening of the fastening. Before hanging the boxes on drywall, you should check that the fastenings will in no way touch the communications laid in the wall. Because even though the dowels themselves may not ultimately reach, for example, the corrugation in which the power cables are laid, when drilling holes it is quite possible to damage them.

The procedure is simple:

  1. At the required mounting height, mark horizontal line strictly according to the level.
  2. The positions of the attachment points are marked.
  3. Two holes are drilled for the corresponding dowels.
  4. A dowel is inserted and a self-tapping screw with a hook at the end is screwed into it or a clamping bolt is tightened. Finally, screw the fastener all the way in so that the hook points upward.
  5. The cabinet is hung on the brackets.

What is important to remember when performing work? Firstly, the line for installing the fasteners will be higher than the level of the upper border of the cabinet. Secondly, since the eyelet itself, by which the cabinet is hung, is often pear-shaped, you should measure along the top of this hole. Before hanging the cabinet on drywall, you should check the fastenings so that they do not wobble and sit firmly in place, and the hooks do not turn.

As reinforcement, you can install a 1-1.5 cm thick strip along the bottom border of the cabinet, secured to the drywall with two or three dowels with self-tapping screws.

Installation of decorative shelves, paintings, light lamps

For these purposes, using dowels with a butterfly end does not make sense, but you cannot use a simple self-tapping screw either. In the first case, the fasteners will be too massive, in the second, unreliable. If the self-tapping screw is only screwed into plaster, it will quickly become loose, destroying the material. Even if it hits the profile, sooner or later the fastener will begin to reach.

You should use a special dowel for drywall. It has the shape of a truncated cone and wide profile threads with big step. The diameter is often up to one centimeter. These dowels are called DRIVA or snail dowels. There may be dowels with or without a drill at the end, metal or nylon.

For drywall, DRIVA nylon dowels with a drill at the end and a length equal to the thickness of the drywall sheets on the wall, no more and no less, are best suited. They have a cross-shaped groove at the end for easy tightening using a Phillips screwdriver.

Work order:

  1. The locations of the fastenings are marked at the central points.
  2. Using a screwdriver and a cue ball with a cross-head bit, screw in the dowel until it stops.
  3. A shelf or other element that needs to be secured is leaned against and a self-tapping screw with a press washer is screwed in.

It all comes down to using only special fasteners for drywall, which are not more expensive than regular ones, but provide reliable fastening and do not create preconditions for cracking and destruction of the gypsum inside the material. You can hang almost anything on drywall, as long as you take into account its strength and follow simple instructions.

How to hang a cabinet or shelf on drywall

After leveling the walls in the children's room, a beautiful plasterboard is created in the office. Smooth surface. At proper finishing walls arise unique design. In the children's room, in the corner, you need to hang a shelf for toys, but at such a height that the baby himself can reach his favorite things. And in the office you just need a shelf for books that are constantly needed (a cookbook, everything about electricity, your favorite pet). In the bathroom, tiled, there is a need for a shelf for creams, scrubs, masks. In this case, the wall must withstand the weight and not collapse along with the furniture and things.

The shelf on the plasterboard wall must be firmly fixed

Attaching a shelf to a plasterboard surface is not a difficult process. You just need to calculate the weight of the shelf, the objects on it and choose the right fasteners. There are three options for attaching shelves that are worth considering in detail:

  • Glue – you can glue a light weight shelf, which will serve as a decorative element. This could be a shelf with a figurine of “Venus”, with a small beautiful picture;
  • Dowel-nails - the shelf can be made of lightweight material. You can put car and apartment keys on it, mobile phone and other light necessities;

    The adhesive for mounting the shelf on drywall must be transparent.

  • Expansion dowels - each fastener is manufactured to support a specific weight. Here you should study very carefully specifications dowels;
  • Mortgage – by using this option, a child can stand on the shelf and nothing will happen.
  • It is worth noting that gypsum board has one disadvantage despite all its advantages - fragility. You can bypass the minus surface different ways, which depend on two parameters:

    It is from these parameters that you need to start when performing work on installing shelves.

    Step-by-step instructions: how to hang a shelf on a plasterboard wall?

    This method is suitable for small shelves for photo frames. This is the easiest way and you can do it like this:

    After this, you can release the shelf, but you shouldn’t immediately load it even with photo frames. Let the glue set thoroughly and harden. Mostly this requires at least 7 hours.

    This method has the advantage that there is no dust or debris when mounting the item. No power tools required.

    Installation is quick, the main thing is to be careful that the glue is not all over the wall and the surface of the shelf. Once dry, there is a gloss that will shine when applied to stains.

    Fastening the shelf with dowel nails

    This method is applicable if the load on the shelf is small, but at the same time, fastening with glue is not suitable. Fasteners are selected based on the location of the structure:

    • The plasterboard wall has a wooden frame.
    • A gypsum board wall contains metal elements.
    • The surface was leveled with plasterboard using a frameless method.

    Depending on the weight of the shelf, applicable different types dowels

    Attention! The length of the fastener must be such as to pass through the shelf material, drywall, frame and be firmly fixed in it. For example, if the wall is made of one layer of plasterboard on metal frame, fasteners must be 35 mm long.

    Installation algorithm:

    After installation, the shelf can be used depending on its purpose.

    Mounting on expansion dowel

    This type of fastening is used if the shelf is heavy enough that ordinary screws will not support it. Special drop-down butterfly fasteners are easy to buy; they can be found in any hardware store. Hang heavy shelf on drywall with the help of dowels it will not be difficult.

    Installation technology:

    Advice! The screws are screwed in with a screwdriver, but not completely. The final screwing must be done with a Phillips screwdriver, with a little force.

    Each dowel is designed for a specific weight. This important should not be overlooked. If the “butterfly” can withstand up to 15 kg, then the KNAUF Hartmut can withstand up to 55 kg. The pricing policy varies depending on the purpose of the dowel, its material of manufacture, as well as the manufacturer.

Drywall - convenient and practical material for quick leveling and finishing of walls. But sometimes it is successfully used to create entire partitions. In this case, the wall immediately becomes dangerous for hanging heavy objects. Despite a lot of advantages, gypsum board sheets are still not ready to tolerate interference in their structure and can quickly collapse. But this does not mean that you can only hang a medal on a ribbon on a gypsum board wall. There are options for how to place heavy objects.

If desired, hang on plasterboard wall a heavy item requires several factors to be assessed. The very tolerability of gypsum boards to the weight of gravity will not say anything - there are a number of accompanying conditions. It is important to understand that a heavy object can be hung on a gypsum board wall only under the following conditions:

  • The drywall itself is of high quality;
  • The weight of the element that is planned to be hung does not exceed 15 kg (even despite assurances from sellers or forums that drywall can withstand 50 kg);
  • The plasterboard sheet is securely fixed to the base wall.

If the wall and drywall meet all these requirements, you can begin attaching the shelf. However, you need to take into account that the gypsum fiber sheet will not withstand ordinary nails. Anchor bolts or a butterfly dowel with screws will come to the rescue.

Instructions for installing a heavy shelf on a wall with gypsum plasterboard

By exerting pressure with its weight on the gypsum fiber sheet, the shelf can gradually destroy the structure of the sheet. Therefore, installing a heavy shelf on drywall is not so simple. There are several ways to proceed. If a butterfly dowel is used, the algorithm of actions is as follows:

  • You need to mark the wall on how the future shelf will be fixed;
  • The holes are drilled with a drill, but you need to drill not only the drywall itself, but also the profile;

  • To fasten the shelf, a butterfly dowel is used - it is inserted into the resulting hole, and then a screw is screwed into it;
  • The screw does not need to be tightened too much.

Another option for attaching a heavy object to a gypsum board wall is to use anchor bolts. In this case, the shelf is not mounted on a “layer” of plasterboard, but with anchor bolts reaching directly to the wall of the room. In this case, you can hang the shelf directly on the anchor bolt, or equip it with a bracket.
