Cedar pines are one of the main components of plants growing in dark coniferous forests and are the most important forest-forming and nut-bearing species.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the total area of cedar forests is 120 million hectares, in Russia – 40 million hectares. Cedars are common in the mountains of Western Europe, the Alps, the Carpathians, Russia, the Far East, Japan, China, North America, and Mexico.

The most famous types:

  • European Cedar Pine (European Cedar);
  • Cedar Pine Siberian (see in the article “”);
  • Korean Cedar Pine (Korean Cedar, Manchurian Cedar);
  • Low-growing pine (Cedar dwarf);
  • Small-flowered Cedar Pine;
  • Pine Flexible Californian Cedar;
  • Cedar Pine Armand;

Cedars are valuable not only for their fruits, called “pine nuts,” pine needles, and beautiful wood, but also for their unique, majestic beauty. Along with cedar pines, it is worth noting, which also have special value in different areas human life activity.

Cedar Pines reproduce in nature by seeds, in cultivation by seeds, and vegetatively by cuttings and grafting.

The Pine family, distributed in the mountains of Western Europe, the Alps, and the Carpathians. A coniferous evergreen tree, the height of which is 10-25 m. The bark of the trunk is smooth, gray-green when young, fissured when mature, Brown. Annual shoots have thick, rust-colored pubescence. Young trees have a narrow pyramidal crown, starting very low, while older trees become wide and irregular in shape.

The needles are 5-12 cm long, thin, straight, hard, dark green, collected in a bunch of five needles. Cones are ovoid, erect, light brown, sitting on short petioles, have a length of 8-10 cm. The scales of the cones are woody and dense. The scutes are large, thickened, with a small white navel. The cones ripen in the third year after flowering and fall off without opening in the spring.

Trees growing in sunny open areas begin to bear fruit at the age of 25, and trees growing in the forest at the age of 50-60. The seeds are small, edible, and are called “pine nuts.”

European Cedar Pine is a frost-resistant, shade-tolerant plant that grows well in fresh, moderately moist clay soils. Lives quite a long time, up to 1000 years.

In the Carpathians at an altitude of 1300-1600 m above sea level and in the Alps at an altitude of 1300-2000 above sea level, together with Spruce and Larch, forming forests. Less common in tree stands.

It has been cultivated quite widely, and its forestry reserves are almost exhausted, so reserves have been organized to protect it. The application is the same as for Siberian Cedar Pine. European Cedar Pine is an Alpine-Carpathian species - a Pleistocene relict (period 1.8 million - 10 thousand years), included in the Red Book of the USSR. Known forms:

According to the growth pattern and shape of the needles:

  • columnar (the crown is columnar, the main branches are vertically raised);
  • dwarf (short, spreading, thin branches, short needles, height up to 40 cm);
  • unifoliate (needles in bundles of 5 needles, or single needle).

According to the color of the needles:

  • green (the needles are bright green);
  • golden (golden needles);
  • variegated (one part of the needles is completely golden, the other with golden stripes and spots).

Distributed in the Far East, in the Ussuri region, Manchuria, North Korea and Japan. This is an evergreen, slender tree, the height of which is 30 (60) m and the diameter of the trunk is 1-2 m. The trunk is straight, covered with a smooth, toasty, dark gray bark The branches are either raised upward or extend horizontally.

The crown is broadly cone-shaped, reminiscent of the crown of the Siberian Cedar Pine, but more spreading, very low, and begins at a trunk height of 7-10 m. Young shoots have dense pubescence of a rusty color. The buds are brownish or red-brown in color, very resinous.

Broad, three/four-sided, bright green needles with a pointed tip, located on short shoots. It is collected with five needles in a bunch, its length is 6-15 (20 cm), width is 1-2 mm. Korean Cedar Pine has much less foliage than Siberian Cedar.

The cones are ovoid-conical, brown in color, much larger than those of the Siberian Cedar. Their length is 10-15 cm, width - 5-9 cm. They ripen in the fall, 2 years after flowering, and fall off together with the seeds. The edible, wingless seeds, 1.5-1.7 cm long, are larger than those of the Siberian Cedar.

The root system of trees growing in shallow soils is superficial. Observations have shown that at a young age this pine grows slowly, after 20 years it grows much faster.

It is frost-resistant, shade-tolerant when young, and light-loving when mature. For good development, this plant requires drained, fertile, moderately moist soil. Lives 300-400 years.

Valuable, Pink colour The wood produced by Korean Cedar Pine grows on dry mountain slopes, and this wood is used as a beautiful building and finishing material.

As an ornamental plant, it is planted in groups and in the form of tapeworms in cities and forest parks. It is recommended to grow Korean Cedar Pine both as a forest crop and for creating nut plantations.

According to statistics, in the 80s of the 20th century. the total area of the Korean Cedar Pine within the forests of the USSR was 5 million hectares. Shapes:

  • variegated (light golden needles);
  • curved (curly, due to the spirally curved needles at the ends of the branches.

Homeland - Northern Japan, mountains of the Kuril Islands. The height of this coniferous evergreen tree is 15-20 m. Branching is often observed from the base of the trunk. The seeds are almost black in color and are about 1 cm long; the weight of 1000 seeds is 133 g. At home, in Japan, in Culture, it is mainly grown in gardens and as a potted crop.

So, as its dwarf specimens, which have amazing silhouettes, crowns and varied colors of needles, they are also grown as a potted crop. Cultivated in Western Europe since 1846. In the wild in Russia they are found in the mountains of the Kuril Islands.

On Black Sea coast Small-flowered Cedar Pine with bluish needles is grown in the Caucasus and Ukraine (Chernigov region). In these areas it grows and bears fruit well, but rather slowly. It is proposed to carry out further research papers on growing this plant in the most humid, southern regions of the USSR.

Homeland - China, the height of this evergreen coniferous tree is up to 20 m. The bark is thin, smooth, gray in color. The crown is asymmetrical; buds are low-resinous, cylindrical brown color. The needles are narrow, 8-15 cm long, bright green, collected in bunches of five needles.

Cedar Pine Armanda (Chinese White) blooms at the end of April, mature cones are 10-20 cm long, cylindrical, resinous, yellow-brown in color. Seeds of the Armanda pine pine ripen in September.

Broadly ovoid-shaped seeds, 12-13 mm long and 8-9 mm wide, black or light brown in color, fall out of the opened cones. It grows very slowly and lives up to 500 years.

This is a frost-resistant, light-loving plant. Soils for cultivation require sandy, sandy loam, well-drained. A durable, soft wood used in construction, furniture production, and pulp production. Turpentine obtained from the resin is used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

Cultivated quite widely in Europe and North America. In Sukhumi, on the Black Sea coast, they breed both decorative tree. It is recommended to carry out work to spread this plant more widely.

Or Flexible Pine; homeland - Western part North America. The height of the tree is 20-25 m, it has thin branches, at the ends of which there are hard, twisted needles. Needles, the length of which is 5-10 cm ( cedar pine photo), collected in bunches of five needles. Cones are cylindrical, 5-30 cm long. The seeds are edible, the weight of 1000 seeds is about 111 g.

It is not demanding on soil for growing. It grows on rocky slopes and cliffs at an altitude of 1500-3300 m above sea level. Tests on its cultivation in the forest-steppe experimental Lipetsk station (Lipetsk region) showed that it is a frost-resistant, well-fruiting, self-seeding plant.

Soft, quite light, very beautiful, pale yellow, a tree that turns red in the air, used as construction material. Cultivated in Europe since 1851.

In Russia, it is grown in the Nikitsky Botanical Garden and in other parks of Southern Crimea. It is recommended to carry out work on its further cultivation and distribution to create nut plantations.

Low-growing or dwarf pine, Cedar slank pine and Cedar dwarf pine grow in Eastern Siberia, in the Far East, Korea, China, Japan. An evergreen coniferous multi-stemmed shrub, the height of which is 40-50 cm (rarely a tree no higher than 3 m, with a rather spreading crown) with thin, flexible branches creeping along the ground, slightly raised at the ends above the ground. Its trunk and branches are covered with smooth dark gray bark.

Young shoots are densely covered with brown hairs with dense pubescence. The buds are highly resinous, pointed, cylindrical in shape. Dense, thin, bluish-green needles, 4-8 cm long, in a bunch of 5 needles, tightly pressed to the shoots. The needles are triangular, with small jagged edges, and stay on the branches for 2 to 4 years.

Small female cones (megastrobilli) are violet-purple in color when young, while mature, shiny ones are light brown in color. The length of the cones is 4-5 cm, the width is 2-3 cm. The cones contain 35-40 edible nutlets, the length of which is 5-6 mm, the width is 2-3 mm. Seeds without a wing, brown in color. Depending on environmental conditions, Cedar dwarf begins to bear seeds from 25-35 years of age. It bears fruit weakly almost every year; higher yields are usually observed once every 2-3 years.

Cedar dwarf (Pine or dwarf pine) propagates by seeds that are spread by nutcrackers and chipmunks; layering - in the fly areas of the tundra, the formation of numerous adventitious roots is observed. It mainly occurs by seeds, less often by layering and grafting.

This is a frost-resistant, resistant to cold, sea fans, but a slow-growing breed. It grows well, usually forming dense thickets on sandy, rocky, gravelly soils. The thickets of the Siberian cedar tree suffer greatly from fires and are quite slow to recover in the burnt areas.

Cedar dwarf wood is a good fuel. From pine needles containing vitamin C, preparing infusions, decoctions and extracts as anti-scurvy agents. The seeds, containing about 60% fat, serve as a source of edible and industrial oil.

Dense cedar shale thickets, strengthening rocky slopes and sands, are an important water-protective, anti-erosion and climate-regulating plant. It is recommended to plant it to create nut-bearing plantations, as well as to decorate “ alpine gardens", in the parks of cities in the northern regions.

The most famous decorative forms of Cedar dwarf wood:

  • Glauca – gray-blue needles;
  • Var. nana – low form, blue needles.

Distributed in the mountains of Mexico, the height of the evergreen coniferous tree is 8-10 m. The needles contain 2-3 needles in a bunch, light green in color, thin.

The trunk is short, tapering, the bark is gray, smooth, thin, scaly, the shoots are covered with a coating. The seeds are wingless, up to 1.5 centimeters long, and there are 2,500 of them per kilogram.

One copy of this plant grows in Artek on non-calcareous soil. All other attempts to grow seedlings of this species were unsuccessful - apparently, the lime that our lands are rich in has a detrimental effect on this species.

However, in the USA it can be found in the extreme north of Baja California and its extreme south. In the USA it grows at an altitude of 1450-2300 meters above sea level. Not of particular interest. Pinzeana Pine from Mexico is close in properties to it.

(Pinus) - genus of evergreens coniferous plants, distributed in the Northern Hemisphere, mainly in the mountains and temperate zone. There are about 100 species, distributed in temperate forests and mountainous areas of the subtropical zone of the Northern Hemisphere.

Evergreens coniferous trees, less commonly shrubs, with whorled branches. The crowns, varied in shape, become lacy, ovoid-blunted or umbrella-shaped with age. The trunks are covered in youth with a smooth, bright bark; in old age, they are covered with a thick, fissured, dark gray or brownish bark. The placement of needles, cones and their size are distinctive features. The needles on short shoots are in bunches, 2-3 or 5 each, needle-shaped, equipped with a wrapper of scale-like, lower leaves, functioning from 2 to 11 years, depending on the species. Pollination occurs before young needles bloom. Since pine trees are pollinated by wind, they produce a huge amount of pollen. In good weather, you can see whole yellowish clouds rising near the pine plantings.

For the most part, all species of the genus are light-loving, undemanding to soil and moisture, but very sensitive to smoke and gases; they do not tolerate urban conditions well. They live up to 300-500 years. They have a powerful, deep root system.

Mountain pine- Pinus mugo Turra. It grows in the mountains of Central and Southern Europe in the form of a large, highly branched shrub with numerous rising or creeping trunks. In the mountains in the alpine and subalpine zones up to an altitude of 2500 m above sea level. seas. It also grows in the foothills. Protected in nature reserves.

This tree is up to 10 m (rarely up to 20) tall, but there are bush and even groundcover creeping forms. The bark of the trunk is brown-gray, smooth when young, then covered with dark brown scales, which remain in the upper part of the trunk ( characteristic feature mountain pine), which is why the trunk at the top is darker. Young shoots are greenish, then become gray-brown. The needles are dark green on all sides, which is also characteristic of mountain pine, short (only 2.5 cm long), hard, blunt, slightly twisted.

Small (up to 5 cm long) shiny gray-brown cones sit on straight short stems. Flowering and fruiting begin at 6-10 years. It is common in culture. In Moscow conditions it blooms in late May - early June. Cones ripen in November next year. Fruiting, or seed production, as they say about cone-bearing plants, is annual and abundant. The shoots have time to become lignified completely by winter, however, in severe winters, the apical buds, despite the protective coating with resin, can be damaged; this does not stop the development and growth of the plant, which at the age of 20 reaches 20 m in height and has a crown diameter of almost three meters.

Winter-hardy, drought-resistant, light-loving, undemanding to soil and moisture, not damaged by pests and diseases, tolerates soil compaction and air pollution, more shade-tolerant than Scots pine. Does not suffer from snowfalls. It is used to create low-growing decorative groups, as protective plantings on steep rocky slopes and as a soil fixer. Goes well with spruce, larches, and birches. It has a large number of decorative forms, among which the most interesting are:

Annual height growth is 3-4 cm. Light-loving, but tolerates slight shading. It is undemanding to soil, can grow on rocky soils, tolerates stagnant moisture and acidic soils. Frost-resistant. Application: single plantings, groups on rocky hills.

Location: light-loving, grow and develop better in open places.

The soil: They are little demanding of soil fertility, preferring sandy or sandy loam. If there is a lot of sand in the soil, it is recommended to add clay. Soil: turf soil, sand or clay (2:1), where lime is needed, add it to the hole 200-300 g. Drainage on heavy soils is required, sand or gravel, 20 cm layer.

Landing: distance between plants is from 1.5 to 4 m. Planting depth is 0.8-1 m or more, root collar is at ground level. Pines have deep roots and are therefore wind resistant. At a young age (up to 5 years) it tolerates planting well. Mature trees should be replanted only with a prepared root system or with a frozen ball.

Care: during planting, add nitroammophoska or humus soil. During the first two seasons after planting, mineral fertilizers are applied in small quantities: 30-40 g/m2. The formation of thick litter promotes the accumulation of humus. Pines are drought-resistant and do not require additional watering. A thick bedding of pine needles retains moisture. Loosening is necessary when soil compaction occurs. The growth of shoots can be slowed down and the crown made denser by cutting off part of the annual growth. Young pines and decorative forms with delicate needles suffer from winter burns. They can be protected with spruce branches, which are removed in mid-April. Mature pines are winter-hardy.

Reproduction: sowing seeds; in 2-coniferous species they are sown mainly in the spring, having previously been stratified for a month; for 5-coniferous trees - in autumn or spring, after 4-5 months of stratification, which is more effective than autumn sowing. It should be borne in mind that pine seeds ripen only in the second year after pollination. Propagation by cuttings is not possible. Rare, highly decorative species can be propagated by grafting.

Usage: Pines have long been used in ornamental gardening, where they are valued for the beautiful shape of their crown, the unique charm of their slender, bright trunks, and the variety of shapes and colors of their needles and cones. Usually they are used to create tracts in forest parks. Pines form the structural basis of the garden and serve as its skeletal plants. Some pines are valuable nut-bearing plants, producing edible, oil-rich seeds - nuts.
