Looking at such an interior, one inevitably remembers the era of Pompadour and Marie Antoinette. The elegance characteristic of French houses and mansions of that time is embodied here in the ornate curves of stucco moldings, in the forms of upholstered furniture with screeds, and in the gently falling folds of golden curtains.

Features of modern living room interior design in a classic style

As we know, initially the classical style was based on antique forms and solutions. But in the modern world, classics also borrow the experience of the 18th – 19th centuries, and therefore they may contain elements of Baroque and Empire style. A living room designed in such colors will always look festive. Unlike white, vanilla ice cream tones do not appear cold.

White ceiling with a molded rosette, light-painted walls with moldings outlining wallpaper inserts, parquet or laminate flooring - when renovating a living room in a classic style, you can quite limit yourself to these components. As for decor, in this matter a considerable burden falls on lamps and textiles on the windows.

The insert also served as a platform for a photo collage and sconces. And thanks to the pattern on the wallpaper, the interior as a whole has become more comfortable.

23. Mirrors and tall candlesticks

In the photo: Living room in a classic style with mirrors in the decor

Character traits

Traditional style is a fairly broad concept - it includes Empire, Baroque, Rococo, and modern classics. It is most popular in the variant of classicism - a direction created on the basis of ancient culture.

The interior of the living room in a classic style is distinguished by following features:

  • the presence of peculiar " focal points» - the interior of each room is built around some piece of furniture (for example, a sofa or fireplace);
  • correct and clear geometric shapes, antique restraint and severity of the setting;
  • plain walls, the best option- white and other natural, pastel colors;
  • a moderate amount of decor, the main elements: stucco on the walls and ceiling, curtains and curtains, elegant porcelain trinkets and dishes;
  • symmetrical arrangement of furniture and large decor.

Unlike many other types of decoration, classics cannot stand half-heartedness, so there is no point in decorating just one room in this style. Traditional design loves spacious, bright rooms and high ceilings. Natural expensive materials and antiques are highly valued.

Color palette

Classic prefers calm, noble shades, does not like variegation - you should not experiment with color and contrasts, or dilute the interior with bright notes.

Basic shades in the design of a classic living room:

  • white;
  • beige;
  • gold;
  • ocher;
  • yellow;
  • terracotta;
  • olive.

The traditional color combination of classicism is white and gold. In this case, inclusions of black are also possible. On furnishings, you can make accents in burgundy, dark blue or dark green. The main thing is that the selected additional color is the only bright accent and is repeated in most furnishings.

There can be three or four colors in the room - do not allow the decor to be variegated or tacky. Restraint and moderation should be in everything. It is worth noting that modern classics allow more freedom in choosing the color scheme of the design - it is enough to maintain the overall harmony of the interior.

Living room decoration

The hall in the design under consideration requires carefully thought out high-quality finishing, if possible using expensive materials. The colors chosen are light and neutral.

Floor and ceiling

The floor of a living room with a classic design should be laid out with expensive and high-quality ceramic tiles under stone or marble, or wooden parquet. Choose a dark, matte shade, perhaps a stacked geometric pattern that visually expands the room. As a rule, the floor remains uncovered, but if this option seems uncomfortable, a small carpet in front of the sofa is acceptable. It can be plain or with a laconic floral pattern.

Ceilings in this style are preferably simple, with white, ivory, or beige plaster. If funds allow, you can decorate them plaster stucco, curbs (with high ceilings) and graceful rosettes. The center of the ceiling is a richly decorated chandelier made of crystal or expensive glass, with shades in the form of candlesticks.

They can be of the following types:

  • with vertical stripes in the spirit of the Victorian era;
  • with a simple floral pattern in a dark shade;
  • with geometric patterns;
  • plain, light, pastel colors.

Wallpaper can be either paper or fabric. If they are rough, then this technique will add comfort to the formal atmosphere. traditional interior. The main thing is that the shade of the pattern on the wallpaper is barely noticeable and has minimal contrast with its background.

In no large room better to choose plain wallpaper, or Venetian plaster. In the spacious living room, wallpaper can be added below wood panels with stucco or carving. Also suitable for large living rooms wall decorations in the form of bas-relief and pilasters. If you are a fan of Baroque or Rococo, try upholstering the walls, or one of them, with expensive fabric, such as satin.

Room decoration

Decorating a traditional living room is no easy task. It requires complete harmony of all elements, adherence to strict symmetry and unity.

Furniture

Furniture in traditional design- wooden, from an array of expensive species (walnut, oak, cherry wood). Its forms are distinguished by grace and elegant pretentiousness: carved legs and backs, high rise, inlay with gold, bronze, mother-of-pearl, enamel. Classic means the use of sets in the design of the living room - a set of sofas and paired armchairs.

The seating area in this option includes a sofa (sometimes two identical ones), armchairs on both sides of it, and a rectangular wooden coffee table, which can accommodate a vase of flowers, or a group of porcelain figurines.

Upholstery of upholstered furniture includes several materials:

  • Genuine Leather;
  • expensive textiles;

The upholstery should be in harmony with the shade wall covering, ideally, repeat its pattern or ornament. Pay attention to terracotta, coral, beige, cream and lavender tones.

Classic prefers symmetry, so most of the furniture in the interior should have a pair. If you love Baroque and Rococo, give preference to exquisite, sophisticated decor: gilding, inlay with precious metals. If you prefer a strict Empire style, give up the abundance of decorations and choose items simple shapes.

Decor and textiles

The decor in classic design is distinguished by discreet elegance, cold luxury and high quality materials. There should be few elements, but their choice should be approached with special care and not skimping.

Here are a few main points in decorating a living room:

  • porcelain products: vases with flowers, decorative plates on the walls, figurines on shelves, cabinets, cabinets and the fireplace;
  • mirrors - their shape is in complete harmony with the prevailing silhouettes of the room;
  • clock - semicircular, with carvings, gilding, bronze inlay, mahogany, precious stones;
  • elegant candlesticks made of forged metal;
  • paintings with pastoral scenes or landscapes, picturesque tapestries - their color scheme should not contrast strongly with the basic shades of the decor.

A good idea is to make an ensemble from a thematic group of figures, for example, a pastoral from rural life.

Classic textiles are used to a minimum - curtains, furniture upholstery, sometimes small carpets in the sofa area. Choose thick curtains: silk or velvet, gathered with gold thread. If the room is spacious and has enough light, complement them with a light tulle curtain. Doorways with the same design can also be used to decorate doorways, especially in large rooms. Floor lamps with fabric lampshades, whose pattern repeats the patterns on the furniture upholstery, look interesting in a traditional atmosphere.

Classicism, unlike modern trends, not only allows, but also welcomes open or transparent glass cabinets, demonstrating the contents, especially if they are books. Ideally, it is expected to exhibit a book series and subscription publications.

Lighting

A traditional living room requires good lighting. In the center of the room, hang a large luxurious chandelier in white, gold, transparent blue, or soft pink. Its decorations will include exquisite crystal pendants, lampshades in the form of candlesticks, rosebuds, bells or tulips. Light tonality: only natural yellowish, or with a pinkish sheen, is recognized.

The chandelier is complemented by other light sources - tall floor lamps, small lamps, paired sconces. They all must adhere to the same silhouette. Sconces, as a rule, are placed on the sides of a sofa or fireplace, floor lamps are placed near a bookcase or sideboard, lamps are placed on cabinets or coffee tables, and they illuminate armchairs. When decorating lamps, preference is given to forged elements, simple geometric patterns, textile lampshades to match other furnishings. Luxurious candelabra made of copper with gilding, bronze, silver with forged patterns and inserts made of enamel, Venetian or Bohemian glass will also fit perfectly into the interior.

Fireplace

A living room in the style of modern classics will be incomplete without a cozy, richly decorated antique fireplace. If you like it vintage interiors, give preference to natural rather than decorative, or electric version.

The hearth can be conveniently placed in a wall niche or any other hollow type structure. If it is not possible to purchase a real fireplace, add naturalness and realism to its electric version with the help of decorative attributes: pokers, firewood, forged grates.

The fireplace is one of the traditional centers of the living room.

There are two types of furniture arrangement in front of it:

  • a coffee table, floor lamps and cabinets are located parallel to the fireplace, a sofa and armchairs are symmetrically opposite each other;
  • the sofa and armchairs are moved in a semicircle towards the fireplace, the cabinets are placed between them - this type of arrangement is suitable for those who like to bask on cold evenings by a warm fireplace.

More modern way location - a fireplace under a TV hung on the wall.

Porcelain and crystal items, embroidered napkins, candlesticks, and photographs in beautiful wooden frames are placed on the mantelpiece as decorations. You can hang a panel above the board self made, and decorate the grille and frame with stucco or carvings.

How to decorate a small living room

Although the direction in question loves the breadth of space, a small living room in a classic style with correct design will look as cozy and formal as the big one.

To create the effect of expanding space, the following techniques are used:

  • a lot of light: natural (large open windows) and artificial (abundance of lighting elements, Spotlights in dark areas);
  • more mirrors - tall wall-length mirrors, mirror doors cabinets will reflect and refract light favorably, creating the illusion of depth in space;
  • minimum furniture: a sofa, a couple of small armchairs, a cabinet and coffee table;
  • instead of a regular sideboard, buy a wardrobe - it saves space great and will look organic with the appropriate decor;
  • suspended ceiling light shade will visually increase the height of the living room.

The ideal color scheme for a small living room in a classic design is white and beige. It is better to replace wallpaper in a small room with plaster or paint. If these coatings do not suit you, choose embossed types of wallpaper and take care of perfectly smooth walls. Wallpaper is preferably light and plain, but a small, simple pattern is also acceptable.
