How to make a modular staircase

Having in hand finished project, you can go several ways. The first is to place an order for the stairs from the manufacturer according to the project. The second is to look in stores for all the components of a modular staircase and purchase them. The third is to make the modules yourself. Which one to choose is up to you to decide. The simplest and reliable way- this is to place an order from the manufacturer. As a result, you will be delivered a ready-made staircase, manufactured in compliance with all norms and rules; all that remains is to assemble it on site, and this does not require any special skills.

The first thing you have to do is install and secure to the floor the first module of the staircase, which is its base. To do this, measure the required distance from the walls and make notes.

Important! All dimensions and calculations must be in project documentation, prepared earlier.

Now, having placed the module in the right place, we make notes for the holes. Then we take a hammer drill and drill holes for fasteners. We install the base of the stairs in place and secure it. Further assembly work will consist of installing subsequent modules into each other.

Having installed the penultimate module, we check that all modules are installed correctly. This is necessary to maintain the geometry of the stringer and so that you do not have to redo the fastenings for the finishing module. If everything is in order, put the finishing module in place. After which, pressing him to interfloor covering or wall, we mark places for holes for fastening. We remove the finishing module, drill the holes, return the module to its place and secure it. Next, using locking screws, we fix all parts of the stringer.

Further work consists of installing flange plates on each module. There is nothing super complicated here. The plates have 8 holes, 4 of which are intended for fastening to the stringer modules. Simply attach the plate to the module and fasten it with 4 screws.

Such ladders do not have the disadvantages characteristic of the previous design, however, assembly with threaded rods is quite complex. The height of the steps still cannot be adjusted. Every 1-2 years you will need to tighten loose threaded connections, and this also causes a lot of trouble.

Based on the clamp principle

These are stairs of a new generation. Among the main advantages of this option, it is necessary to note the possibility of changing the length of the step and the distance between the elements. Modules and flanges can be deployed.

The load distribution on the fastening elements is organized using advanced technology - the connections do not become loose over time.

Each of the stairs discussed above can be assembled using bolts - these are elementary fasteners installed between individual steps and helping to increase the rigidity and reliability of the structure. Most often, bolts are used in the latest generation of stairs.

To ensure that your modular staircase lasts as long as possible without complaints, remember the following tips:

  • vertical supports must be installed on pre-poured concrete platforms. They will serve as a foundation;
  • the staircase can only be paired with a main wall with a thickness of 20-25 cm;
  • When installing a modular staircase on a wooden floor, the logs must first be reinforced with cross bars.

Preparatory stage

On preparatory stage you have to perform a number of calculations and prepare the necessary drawings.

First step. Create a drawing of the room in which you plan to place the modular staircase. It is most convenient to make such drawings to scale on graph paper or in a special program.

Second step. Measure the height of the room. Draw a section of the room along the height near the previously drawn up room plan on a piece of paper. Mark the lines of the floor and ceiling of the room in the drawing.

Third step. Schematically draw a modular staircase. The steps will be fixed at a distance of about 15-16 cm. The drawing will help you determine the required number of steps. If the top step has an unacceptably small height, the “excess” must be evenly distributed over all steps of the staircase.

For example, the floor has a height of 280 cm. You make 15-centimeter steps. Simple calculations show that there will be not a whole number of steps, but, specifically in this case, 18.6 pieces. In this example, you need to make 18 steps, increasing the distance between individual steps to 15.5 cm.

Fourth step. Apply a horizontal projection stair steps to the room plan. The optimal width of a modular staircase is 100 cm. It is better to make steps about 30 cm wide.

Fifth step. Prepare a drawing of the modules for attaching the steps of the stairs. Each module must have the same dimensions and shape. If you plan to use ready-made modules, this drawing will not be needed.

Main stage

First step. Prepare the material for making the steps of a modular staircase. It is advisable to use solid wood. Optimal thickness boards - from 4-5 cm. Use screws and glue to connect boards. If you wish, you can purchase steps from finished form. At this point, focus on your personal preferences and the characteristics of your specific situation.


Second step. Prepare modules for attaching the steps. It is almost impossible to make round modules at home without the appropriate skills. Therefore, it is better to immediately order their production from a specialized company according to your calculations and drawings.

You can make square modules yourself. Use profile pipes for this. Pipes with walls with a thickness of 0.5 cm or more are suitable. Use bolts and welding to connect elements.


Third step. Prepare concrete platforms for installation of load-bearing supports. These supports should be immediately concreted into the platforms.


Fourth step. Slice suitable pipe for the required number of parts in accordance with previously prepared drawings.

Fifth step. Make holes in the prepared elements for bolted connection modules.

Sixth step. Assemble the entire structure, attaching the staircase modules to the supports in parallel.


Seventh step. Strengthen the system by creating some neat welds. At the same stage, weld the metal corner to the staircase modules if you want to create such a edging for the steps.


Eighth step. Paint the metal elements of the structure, having previously cleaned them of rust.

Ninth step. Install the steps.

Tenth step. Install fencing. It can be forged or wooden. Choose according to your taste.


At the end, all you have to do is once again verify the quality and reliability of all connections and test the assembled structure. At this point, the do-it-yourself modular staircase is ready.
