Replacing windows with plastic ones - how to measure the opening correctly. Measuring plastic windows How to measure and install plastic windows yourself

The measurement procedure is always required, and it would be better to entrust it to professional window installers. In all other cases, there is a high probability that the opening will be measured incorrectly, which is fraught with unpleasant consequences. In this case, it is better for the customer to obtain a basic minimum of knowledge, which will facilitate the process of communication with specialists. This article contains all the information buyers need to help avoid mistakes when measuring windows.

Why is it better to entrust measurements to professionals?

Many window customers consider this procedure a simple matter that they can handle on their own. Inexperienced property owners think that it is enough to be extremely careful, know how to measure a window, and everything will be fine. This is a misconception. There are quite a lot of nuances that a person without practical experience has no idea. In the end, the measurement seems to have been done correctly in all respects, but it is not entirely correct.

For example, in houses old building There may be a fairly large distance between the window frames and the walls, which is filled with wooden backing bars, felt and construction waste and then plastered. Non-specialists in half similar situations limited to measuring the old frame, while you need to get to the wall itself. In addition, in the process of taking dimensions, possible distortions of window openings are identified and determined optimal type fasteners. All these facts speak in favor of the fact that it is better to entrust the measurements to competent professionals.

Important! Today, the vast majority do not charge a measurement fee if the client orders windows. So a serious customer saves absolutely nothing by independently determining the dimensions of the openings, and the procedure of measuring on their own loses all meaning.

Algorithm for measuring a rectangular window opening

Information about the sequence of measurements is needed even if this procedure is entrusted to specialists. This knowledge will help not only to effectively monitor the actions of a specialist, but also to identify the degree of his competence. Experienced workers, when measuring the opening for a window, usually perform the following list of actions:

To ensure successful window installation in the future, the opening must be checked for distortion. If the height of the opening (right, left and middle) and its width (bottom, center and top) have a slight difference, and the size of the diagonals does not have significant differences, then everything is in order. If there is a serious discrepancy in size, you need to use a plumb line, level and tape measure to “fit” the correct rectangle into the curved opening.

Measuring the opening at quarter-and-a-quarter windows

Quarter openings differ from ordinary ones in that they have an internal projection of bricks along their entire perimeter. The size of this “influx” is a quarter of the length of the brick. In fact, the algorithm for measuring such windows is no different from taking dimensions from ordinary openings, only in this case it is necessary to take into account the fact that the frame profile on the right and left should extend 20-40 mm beyond the side protrusions, and the overlap at the top should be 15-20 mm. At the bottom of the frame during installation, or wooden blocks, thanks to which the installation of low tide is possible. The height of these auxiliary elements varies between 10-30 mm.
The recommended algorithm for measuring windows is only relevant for simple designs rectangular shape. Other techniques have been developed to measure windows with more complex geometries.

Consequences of incorrectly measuring window openings

There are only two possible consequences of incorrect sizing - the window turns out to be either larger or smaller than the opening. You can add a third one - the frame enters “with a creak”, which is also very bad. Indeed, in this case, even a slight subsidence of the foundation is guaranteed to provoke deformation profile design, as a result of which you can expect the following troubles:
  • depressurization of the window in the sash area or along the perimeter of the frame;
  • the appearance of cracks on double-glazed windows - this situation is typical for severe distortions;
  • incorrect opening of the sashes that cling to the frame.
As for the options when the dimensions of window openings are incorrectly taken with a noticeable difference in dimensions, the situation when the frame is smaller is considered the best. In this case, all hopes are pinned on the possibility of blocking the opening. However, such adaptation also threatens with troubles:
  • V winter time the window may begin to freeze;
  • may appear along the perimeter of the frame, double-glazed windows and on slopes;
  • there is a high probability of cracks appearing around the window, which ultimately leads to depressurization.

Sometimes, if the dimensions of the opening are smaller than the dimensions of the window, there may be a proposal to cut down the walls. Under no circumstances should you agree to this, as this is a violation load-bearing structures with all the ensuing consequences. Moreover, even with successful expansion of the opening without creating emergency situations there is no guarantee of normal operation of the window. Usually in such cases the frame fits flush, and the risks associated with this situation have just been listed.

Health to everyone!

What else do you need besides health?

Everyone has their own answer to this question. But I know for sure that there are people who, in addition to their health, would also like to forget about those unpleasant minutes when new ones were delivered to their home plastic windows to replace all old ones.

It would seem that there could be something unpleasant here if new, high-quality windows, for which a considerable amount of money has already been paid, are standing at home and waiting to be installed in window hole?

It turns out that there are cases when everything is fine only until the technicians who came to install it state the fact that the new windows do not fit.

But all the owners of new windows should not refuse the services of a measurer and not give the manufacturer the dimensions taken from a neighbor who installed the same windows.

To avoid such troubles, today we will consider in detail the topic of correct window measurement.

The right approach to window measurements

Where should repairs begin?

Many of those who are starting this battle for comfort think, let’s start, and then everything will go according to the well-worn rails. It is possible, of course, to carry out this way renovation work. But only for those who don’t feel sorry for their time or their money.

Any person at least a little familiar with construction knows that real repairs begin with calculations and calculations that should answer the questions: how long will it take? construction works, and how much these planned works will cost.

All calculations can be made based on a detailed project of the upcoming work, in which there can be no details and everything must be taken into account: from installing a door handle to installing new windows.

If door handle choosing is relatively simple, but with windows the situation is somewhat more complicated.

Companies that produce window products can provide information on how much a window of a certain size will cost. But how can these sizes be determined?

You can, of course, make an approximate estimate, but then the price will also be approximate. And if not one, but several windows are to be replaced, then their estimated cost will also be very approximate, which is quite a shame.

The second option is to call a measurer from one of the companies that supply plastic windows to the market. But, again, there will be no guarantee that he will provide you with everything necessary measurements. The maximum that can be expected from his visit is that in a couple of days they will call from the company and announce the cost of the entire set of windows.

The third option to obtain the dimensions of the future window is to find on the Internet data from reference books on standard sizes for houses of certain series.

You can find out which specific series your house belongs to by looking at the relevant information in technical passport your apartment. The exact dimensions of your windows can also be indicated there.

In the event that from the technical passport necessary information If you couldn’t get it, you can contact the organization responsible for the maintenance and repair work taking place in your home.

If your house is brick or block, then the actual dimensions may not exactly correspond to the standard ones. When constructing them, much depends on the professionalism of the builders who are responsible for the quality of the masonry. In such houses, often the window opening, due to “blocked” slopes, can look like a diamond, in which the dimensions taken at the top and bottom of the window will correspond to each other. But a rectangular window made to these dimensions will not fit into such a window opening.

With panel housing construction, in terms of maintaining the rectangularity of the openings, the situation is much better. Of course, there are certain discrepancies here too, but they are within acceptable limits.

There are not so many standard series of panel houses. This especially applies to houses that were built before the beginning of this century. You can often find twin houses in both Kaliningrad and Sverdlovsk.

Changes that could be present during the construction of panel houses related to the internal layout, the number of floors or entrances. External elements such as balconies and window openings have always remained the same.

In technical documents, the dimensions of the width and height of a window opening (namely the opening, not the window) were indicated in strict order: the first number corresponded to it, the second number corresponded to the height.

Panel house P-44 series

Construction and installation departments involved in panel housing construction have high-rise buildings, which they build with particular pleasure. These include the standard P-44 series. Good layout rooms at a relatively low cost per square meter makes these houses very popular among those who are planning to buy their own roof over their heads. If in the technical documentation a digital index is added to the series number, for example, 44-1, then it can be ignored, since this index relates only to the number of entrances of a given house.

Apartments in the P-44 series can be one-, two- and three-room.

Window openings in a one-room apartment correspond to the following dimensions:

  • in the room - 1470x1420mm;
  • in the kitchen connected to the balcony, the size of the part of the opening that is located above the window sill is 1160x1420mm. The doorway of the balcony door is 700x2160mm.

In a two-room apartment the dimensions of the openings are as follows:

  • in both rooms they are the same - 1760x1420mm;
  • in the kitchen with a balcony, part of the window with a window sill is 1160x1420mm, the door to the balcony is 700x2160mm.

The dimensions of the openings in a three-room apartment are as follows:

  • in all three rooms they are the same width and height - 1760x1420mm;
  • kitchen window opening – 1460x1420mm, door to the balcony – 700x2160mm.

Panel house P-44-T series

The residential panel high-rise building of the P-44-T series differs from the previous series not only in its letter index. Its design has some distinctive features.

Apartments in such buildings have large area and significant changes to the interior layout.

Dimensions of window openings in a one-room apartment of this series:

  • in the room – 1460x1420mm;
  • in the kitchen the window opening is 160x1420mm, the door opening is 680x2160mm.

Openings two-room apartment fits sizes:

  • in the hall – 1460x1420mm;
  • in the bedroom with a balcony the part that is in window opening– 1160x1420mm. Balcony door opening – 680x2160mm;
  • in the kitchen the window is 940x1420mm, the bay window is also 940x142mm.

In a three-room apartment:

  • in the kitchen, where the window opening has a three-section bay window, its dimensions are 747x420mm, 2300x1420mm, 740x1420mm;
  • in the living room and bedroom, the rooms are connected to the balcony and have identical openings: the dimensions of the part in which the window is located are 1460x1420mm. The adjacent balcony door opening is 680x2160mm.

KOPE series - houses that were built from spatial layout elements

Panel houses, which belong to the KOPE series, are built from non-standard sized elements, therefore, in houses of this series that are identical in appearance, apartments with the same number of rooms may have a difference in area. They may also contain various options sizes of window openings.

In one-room apartments of this series, window openings have the following dimensions:

  • in the room - 1470x1420mm;
  • in the kitchen the window is 1160x1420 mm, and the door leading to the balcony is 700x2160 mm.

In an apartment with two rooms, the dimensions of the openings are:

  • in the bedroom – 1470x1420mm;
  • in the hall – 1470x14204mm;
  • in the kitchen, from which there is access to the balcony, the window opening is 1160x1420mm. The door to the balcony is 700x2160mm.

In a three-room apartment:

  • in all three rooms the window openings are the same size - 1760x1420mm;
  • in the kitchen, which is equipped with an exit to the loggia, 1460x1420mm is the section with a window sill, and 700x2160mm is the balcony door.

The apartment, which contains four rooms, has the following window opening sizes:

  • in the kitchen there is access to a loggia measuring 700x2160mm - this doorway, 660x1420mm is a window;
  • in one pair of rooms the windows are the same - 2060x1420mm;
  • in the other two rooms the windows are also identical to each other, but smaller in width - 1470x1420mm.

In total, six different modifications of houses in this series were developed.

There are also options in which, according to the design, the loggia does not come from the kitchen, but from the room. In this case, the measurement of this window must be approached individually.

Houses of the P-30 series

Outside of Moscow, houses of this series are not often found, and they are distinguished by the higher height of their living spaces. Their wall thickness is noticeably increased, because the panels themselves consist of three layers: two layers of concrete and a layer of effective insulation. The appearance of these high-rise buildings differs from other panel buildings by the loggias, which are recessed into the internal dimensions of the building.

Dimensions of openings in a one-room apartment of this series:

  • in the kitchen - 1470x1420mm;
  • in the room - 2080x1420mm.

In a two-room apartment:

  • in the hall – 2080x1420mm;
  • in the bedroom – 1470x1420mm;
  • the doorway exiting from the kitchen to the loggia is 700x2180mm, the window opening is 870x1420mm.

In a three-room apartment:

  • in the hall – 2080x1420mm;
  • in the bedroom – 1470x1420mm;
  • in the bedroom, which has access to the loggia, the door opening is 700x2180mm, and the window opening is 870x1420mm;
  • in the kitchen - 1470x1420mm.

In an apartment with four rooms:

  • hall – 2080x1420mm;
  • bedroom without a loggia – 1470x1420mm;
  • two bedrooms, from which there is access to the loggia, have the same opening sizes. Door – 700x2180mm, window – 870x1420mm;
  • The kitchen in this apartment also has access to the loggia. Here the opening of the window section is 870x1420mm, the doorway is 700x2180mm.

These dimensions are also suitable for modifications of the P-30 series - P-31 series, which differs from the original only in the attached technical rooms on the ground floor of the building.

Panel houses series P-3

The advantage of these high-rise buildings is their good specifications at a low price per square meter of living space. The disadvantage is that the ceiling height is lower than in the houses of the previous series.

Sometimes the P-3 series is confused with the P-44 series due to their similarity in internal layout premises.

Window openings in a one-room apartment of this series:

  • in the room – 1740x1400mm;
  • in the kitchen - 1460x1400mm.

In an apartment with two living rooms:

  • in the kitchen - 1460x1400mm;
  • in the first room - 1740x1400mm;
  • in the second, which has access to the balcony, the dimensions of the window section are 1160x1400mm, the balcony door opening is 670x2160mm.

The dimensions of the window openings of a three-room apartment, in which there are exits to loggias from two rooms, are equal to:

  • in both bedrooms the opening for the window with a window sill is 1160x1400mm, the doorway to the loggia is 670x2160mm;
  • in the hall – 1740x1400mm;
  • in the kitchen - 1460x140mm.

The most big flat This series is four-room, it has exits to loggias from three rooms.

Dimensions of window openings for this apartment:

  • central room – 1460x1400mm;
  • 770x1400mm and 670x2160mm are the dimensions, respectively, of the window section and doorway of the smallest of the three existing exits to the loggia;
  • 1160x1400mm and 670x2160mm – dimensions of the window and door opening leading to the loggia from the other two living rooms;
  • And finally, 1460x1400mm is the size of the kitchen window opening.

Houses of the P-43 series

Sometimes houses in this series may be designated as P-43/16. This addition does not change anything in the size of the window openings and relates only to the number of floors of the building. Big kitchen and the absence of walk-through rooms gives additional comfort to the owners of apartments in this series. But the small living rooms themselves, as well as low ceilings (only 2640 mm), negatively affect the popularity of these apartments among potential buyers of secondary housing.

Window opening sizes studio apartment, built according to this series:

  • in the room – 1740x1400mm;
  • at the exit from the kitchen to the loggia there is a window section measuring 1160x1400mm, the door opening is 670x2160mm;

In a two-room apartment:

  • hall – 1740x1400mm;
  • bedroom – 1460x1400mm;
  • The exit from the kitchen to the loggia has dimensions of a window opening of 1160x1400mm and a door opening of 670x2160mm.

In a three-room apartment:

  • hall – 1740x1400mm;
  • in two bedrooms the window openings are identical - 1460x1400mm;
  • There is only one loggia in this apartment, and the exit to it is designed from the kitchen. 1160x1400mm is part of the opening with a window sill, the doorway is 670x2160mm.

Nine-story panel house series II-49

In terms of the small square footage of the rooms, this is the most economical panel residential building.

The people living there still cannot get used to the small (only 6m2) kitchen. Since this house was not designed for comfortable living, but rather for compact living, because the number of rooms in one apartment reached up to five.

Window openings in apartments of this series of houses can be as follows:

  • large size – 1760x1520mm;
  • smaller size – 1310x1520mm;
  • exit to the balcony: 1310x1520mm - part of the window with a window sill, 660x2220mm - this is part of the opening in which the balcony door is installed.

Secrets of correct measurement of plastic windows in the video:

How to measure a window opening without outside help

Accurate data for any measurements can only be obtained using an accurate measuring instrument.

Some people do not follow this rule and can take measurements using a regular ruler, marking the required distance with it several times. It is not surprising that with this approach, the obtained sizes may differ significantly from the real figures.

If there is a need to independently measure the dimensions of a window opening and you have a proven tape measure, then you need to take the dimensions, guided by the following mandatory rules:

  • do not use an old wooden frame as a sample for measurements;
  • all measurements should be carried out relative to the outer slope. The outer slope is the main reference point because it has constant dimensions. After installing the window, the sides and top sides window frame should be hidden by 1.5-2cm behind the outer slope. Therefore, to find out the width of the future window frame, you need to subtract 3-4 cm from the measurement between the side outer slopes;
  • Since a drip sill is installed under the future window frame from the street side, and a window sill is installed from the room side, the specifics of obtaining the size of the frame height are somewhat different from that used when calculating the width.

The main attention should be paid to ensuring that after installing the frame there is space left underneath it for installing the window sill.

In this case, the upper horizontal crossbar of the frame should be hidden behind external slope no less than 1.5 - 2 cm. In accordance with these introductory information, you need to measure the distance from the bottom of the window opening, which is hidden from the inside by the window sill, and from the outside by the ebb (it’s easier to raise the ebb). Then you need to subtract 5-6 centimeters from the result obtained.

Particular attention should be paid to the fact that the required size can only be obtained by taking the distance from the concrete on which the lower part of the old frame is installed, and not from the ebb or window sill;

  • deviations from horizontal and vertical at the top, bottom and sides of the window opening can significantly affect the calculation of the dimensions of the future window frame.

The lower and upper lintel of the window frame are installed strictly horizontally, and the side parts of the frame are strictly vertical, so a trapezoidal opening may prevent the frame from entering it if the measurements are not taken from the lines marked by level.

You can easily check your own measurements if you find the series of your home in the information above and compare them with the results obtained.

It is not a fact that these dimensions will coincide down to the millimeter, because concrete plates, in which the window openings are located, are made with certain tolerances.

But if the discrepancies are within one or two centimeters, then the confirmed data can be taken to calculate the future window frame.

At the very least, you can begin to work out options for the cost of future windows, taking the correctly executed dimensions as a reference.

Various types

The height and width of window openings in panel and brick houses depend on the height of the ceiling in interior spaces And square area the premises themselves. There are special sanitary standards applied to the construction of residential premises. According to them, the larger the volume of the room, the greater the number daylight should go into it.

Houses of the Brezhnev era

The bulk of the panel and brick five-story buildings, called “Brezhnevka” buildings, were built between 1965 and 1975.

In these houses, the kitchens are very similar in size to those that were built during the time of Khrushchev - they have the same modest dimensions (about 6-7 m2). But, unlike the Khrushchev buildings, there are no walk-through rooms in Brezhnev's houses, everyone has separate entrance from the common corridor. Later, in our time, on the roofs of Brezhnevkas major renovation began to install pitched roofs. During construction, all houses of this type were initially designed with a flat combined roof.

During the times of stagnation, extremely insufficient attention was paid to the quality of thermal insulation during the construction of houses. Energy resources at that time cost pennies, so there was little point in saving them.

Now all Brezhnevkas are being gradually repaired, while undergoing mandatory thermal modernization.

Window openings three-room apartments in Brezhnev’s five-story buildings they are usually located on opposite facades of buildings, which distinguishes this type of houses from the same “Khrushchev” buildings.

Brezhnev panels were built mainly according to projects that belonged to the following series: No. 137, No. 504, No. 606, No. 600 and its modernized version - No. 600.11.

A special variety of data houses standard series do not differ, just as their window openings do not differ.

Window openings in Brezhnevkas

Dimensions of standard window openings in houses built between 1965 and 1975 of the last century:

  • where a window with two hinged sashes is installed - 1300x1400mm;
  • where the window is three-leaf - 2100x1400mm;
  • where there is an L-shaped exit to the balcony - a window section with a window sill measuring 1400x1400mm, a balcony door - 750x2150mm;

The balcony in Brezhnev's houses is remote and with three sides open.

The owners (in almost every apartment) eliminate this drawback by installing a U-shaped balcony frame, the standard dimensions of which are:

  • 800x1500mm are the side walls of the balcony;
  • 2500x1500mm is the front part of the balcony.

Modern type houses

Houses with improved layouts began to be built starting in the mid-nineties.

In most cases, residential high-rise buildings built before this time were not particularly different in appearance from each other.

The architects who designed them were faced with the main task– fit as many residents as possible into one concrete box. Therefore, the external beauty of the building and the comfortable living of its residents were not considered priorities in the then housing policy.

Microdistricts in which housing has been built with improved and technical and functional characteristics, is also distinguished by the interesting work of architects who created the individual appearance of the buildings.

In modern multi-story buildings residential buildings began to use additional architectural elements (French balconies, bay windows, semicircular windows), which previously had no place in ordinary residential buildings built for ordinary people.

Concrete houses being built these days can not only be made of panels - they can also be monolithic.

By standard projects they are divided into:

  • low- and multi-storey monolithic buildings;
  • panel-block buildings;
  • multi-section panels with row sections;
  • panel houses, erected in the form of a tower.

Standard for window openings in houses modern type next:

  • the opening in which a window with two sashes is installed - 1460x1430mm;
  • opening with three-leaf window– 1780x1430mm;
  • opening connecting the loggia with the room: window section - 800x1430mm in size, door - 750x2150mm in size.

Depending on the architectural design, modern buildings can have three types of frames installed on their loggias:

  • straight balcony frame– 2500x1500mm;
  • an L-shaped frame with a height of 1500 mm can have a long part width from 2500 mm to 2800 mm and a short part width from 800 mm to 1000 mm;
  • balcony frame in the form of a semicircle, consisting of several identical sections, the size of which is 750x1500mm.

Stalin's houses

Houses that were built before Khrushchev replaced Stalin as head of government still stand and delight their residents. high ceilings and a large area of living rooms.

The words "Stalin's house" still mean that the building with comfortable premises, built to last. This is confirmed by the high cost of apartments of this type in the secondary housing market.

Typical designs of Stalinist houses are two- or four-story buildings, in which, in addition to large living rooms, there are many spacious utility rooms.

The number of rooms in the apartments of these houses is rarely more or less than three or four.

The dimensions of the openings in Stalin's houses correspond to the height of the ceilings in their rooms:

  • a window with two sashes can be of three sizes - 1080x1800mm, 1500x1900mm, 1500x1900mm;
  • rectangular exit to the balcony – 1500x2700mm.

Houses built under Khrushchev

Today the “Khrushchevs”, which have outlived their usefulness guarantee period, are actively being demolished, but this process is typical only for buildings built within Moscow.

During the construction of these 4- and 5-story residential buildings, their residents were promised that they would spend no more than 25 years in these modest rooms, then communism would come, and a separate apartment would be built for each person, corresponding to his needs.

But, unfortunately, communism passed by, and “Khrushchev” apartments will remind their residents of lost prospects for a long time.

Window openings in Khrushchev buildings:

  • where a double-leaf window is installed - 1280x1340mm;
  • where there is a tricuspid one – 2040×1500mm;
  • the block of access to the balcony measuring 680x2070mm is a door, the window is 1350x1340mm.

Residential buildings built in 1990-2000

Nine-story panel houses - transitional type residential buildings, which were more comfortable than the Brezhnevkas, but did not yet reach the modern level.

Standard window openings for houses built in this time period:

  • double-leaf window – 1990x2000mm;
  • a three-leaf window has two options: in the hall where a flower girl was installed under the window - 1760x1400mm, standard window - 2460x1400mm;
  • exit to the balcony in the first bedroom with a window 1400x1400mm, opening 750x2150mm - door;
  • exit to the balcony in the second bedroom: 1760×1400mm – window, 800×2150mm – balcony door opening;
  • exit to the balcony in the version where a flower girl is installed in the hall: 1760x1400mm is the window section, 800x2150mm is the balcony door opening.

ABOUT standard sizes windows in video:

Size of window frames for panel houses

For windows installed in a panel house, there is a state standard that specifies all possible characteristics, including strictly regulated sizes.

During major repairs of buildings related to secondary housing, design engineers who make up project documentation, when replacing old windows, they do not measure each individual window in the house to be reconstructed. For these purposes, they select specific information about which series the house to be repaired belongs to. Based on the information received, all fillings of window and balcony openings are replaced.

What should the window opening be like?

The calculation of the opening required for each individual room for window filling is made on the basis of two data:

  • climatic zone in which the living space will be located;
  • area occupied by residential premises.

In order to find out the area of a window in a room that is in the middle climatic zone, quantity needed square meters its area divided by 1.55 is the figure of the coefficient approved by Gosstandart.

The result obtained will correspond to the area of the window that will provide sufficient lighting for a given room.

Options

In the state standard, which was used for the construction of residential multi-storey buildings during the times Soviet Union, the dimensions of window openings were clearly regulated.

During construction modern buildings all architectural and technical specifications are required to undergo a special examination. But, depending on what the developer wants to offer its clients, the projects and, accordingly, the filling of window openings may differ radically from the standard ones. Therefore, in modern high-rise buildings, measurements of window frames to be replaced must be approached individually.

Why measure

Many people believe that in order to find out Exact size For a plastic window that needs to be installed to replace the window filling that has expired, it is enough to measure the dimensions of the old one. This is a serious mistake that you will regret if you order new windows according to the old sizes.

Frames in modern window products made from different types materials (wood, PVC, aluminum) differ from each other in thickness and profile width.

Therefore, when calculating the dimensions of windows to be installed in an opening of the same size, you need to make different tolerances depending on the material from which they are made.

I hope the information contained in this article will help those who want to additional problems order and install new windows.

There are no problems; you should measure the window openings for plastic windows in advance. The editors of Homius will tell you how to do this yourself. You will need a construction tape, a pencil and a plumb line.

For those who do not know how to correctly measure the opening for a plastic window with a quarter, you need to follow a simple scheme. If the window frame is hidden behind external wall, it must be measured correctly. A mistake often costs the home owner a pretty penny. The indentation is always filled with foam; this distance is also taken into account.

To take measurements, you need to use a standard construction meter and find out the height and then the width of the opening.

It is much easier to calculate the dimensions of a structure without a quarter. There is no need to take into account additional inserts and openings; it is enough to simply measure the height and width and write down this data.

Additional measurements may be required. mosquito net. To do this, the tape measure is placed in the opening without affecting the entire frame.

How to measure the opening for installing a plastic window

Before taking measurements for plastic windows, you need to find out what type of construction it is. The window can be mixed: there is a quarter on the sides, but not in the rest. Other combinations are possible. In this case, in order not to make a mistake, it is worth familiarizing yourself with the basic rules of measurements.

When removing multi-level windows, it turns out that the opening is actually larger than it initially seemed, and this can become a problem. Most often you have to either use foam or order a larger window.

It is especially important to properly prepare for the installation of double-glazed windows in ancient buildings, where the design can be completely unpredictable. Before measuring windows to replace with plastic ones, it’s worth digging around the opening on at least one side and finding out how far into the wall the frame is.

How to properly measure a window using improvised means

To find out whether there is a quarter in the window or whether it is solid, it is worth taking several measurements, both inside the house and outside.

You need to do the following:

  • measure all parameters: height, width and length;
  • calculate the dimensions of internal and external structures;
  • add into the calculation the dimensions of additional parts, ebb and flow and mosquito nets.

After all the parameters have been calculated, it is necessary to agree with the manufacturer and installer of the structures on the type of binding, color, type of glass unit and other details.

How to correctly take dimensions for plastic windows

The easiest way to find out the size of a window opening in a panel house is to use a telescopic ruler or a special professional tape measure.

PHOTO: fabrikaokon.ru

It is necessary to measure the height twice - on both sides, and the width is enough to measure only once, but at the bottom of the window. City buildings almost always have quarters. With standard dimensions of the window sill and the entire structure, the window will be several centimeters smaller than the opening in which it is installed.

How to measure correctly for a plastic window

Since they have a different configuration, it is not practical to take into account the dimensions of the wooden structure without adding an error. If it is necessary to replace a window with a balcony door, calculations are carried out according to a different scheme with the addition of indicators of the adjacent opening. The final calculations will depend on the width of the window, whether the plastic one will be replaced or there will be a transition from wood to PVC.

How to measure plastic windows yourself

To quickly measure the size of a quarter window opening, you must follow the instructions. The final result will depend on the overall complexity of the design.

Illustration Description of action

Open the window and measure the width from the outside. Add another 4 cm to the resulting figure.

If the outside of the window is lined with brickwork, we take measurements at two points - sunken and convex. Add 20 mm to each obtained value
We measure vertically. We rest the end of the tape measure against the brickwork. We also add 20 mm to the indicator of the upper part, but subtract 50 mm from the lower indicator

To each obtained figure, a possible error is necessarily added, which, if necessary, is corrected by laying out special material between the wall and the window.

Do-it-yourself measuring of plastic windows

Each window company has a technician who will measure PVC windows; no instructions are needed. But if you want to save on work, you can do all the calculations yourself. This is easy to do in a residential apartment; it is enough to take into account only a few nuances:

  • the tape measure is placed from one brick layer to another, from the outside;
  • due to the window sill, the structure below is slightly modified, so you need to subtract 50 mm from the lower length;
  • 20 mm is added to each top and side indicator.

In order not to suffer with measurements, you can study the standard passport of the apartment and look at the numbers indicating the length, height and width of the window, and then calculate and add the above numbers to these data. If the apartment owner does not know how to measure the opening for a plastic window, it is better to make sure that the calculations are correct or contact a specialist, since in case of an error you will have to overpay.

Stand profile for PVC windows: dimensions

To find out how to correctly measure the opening for installing a plastic window in an apartment, you should read the instructions.

Illustration Description of action
We measure wooden window from a quarter to a quarter, placing a building meter to external masonry. Add 20 mm

We measure the height of the window. In this case, we do not add anything, because the wooden window has a small rise, which will be removed when installing the PVC structure

We measure the ebb from the outside

We measure the window sill. This is one piece wooden structure, which starts from the outside and ends in the room. It is necessary to capture the entire tree, excluding the low tide area

You can add a few centimeters to the window sill to make it wider, but it is important to note that it is forbidden to completely block the radiators

If desired, you can vary such indicators as the width of the window sill, but the length of the entire opening and height must remain unchanged.

How to measure PVC windows

To find out how to measure plastic windows correctly, it is recommended to follow the instructions provided. It is important that the dimensions of the valves do not exceed the largest permissible values. The width of one leaf cannot exceed 40 cm.

To correctly determine the size of a PVC window, it is also worth taking into account the “age” of the building. If the house is new and the structures are being installed only for the first time, it is important to adhere to general style.

The most difficult thing to do is measure a window in a wooden house where plastic elements have not been installed.

Installing plastic windows is not an easy job and must be done with full responsibility.

For making a window frame required size you will need its dimensions. You can do them yourself or call a specialist from a window company.

If you decide to involve specialists, then knowing the technology of taking measurements will not be superfluous. This way you can monitor the work and determine the level of their qualifications. Or you can do without specialists and take measurements yourself and save some money.

Before taking measurements, you need to properly prepare:

  • Provide free access to the window. If work is carried out at height, open window sash for performing external measurements. When taking measurements in a private house or on the ground floor, you need to place a ladder or stepladder to the window;
  • Take a pen and paper. Draw a table in which you will enter all parameter values;
  • Measure the width, length and thickness of the window sill beam. Then the height and width of the window opening;
  • Measure the length and width of the sill.

Important! All measurements are taken and recorded in millimeters.

Stages of taking measurements

  • First, measure the width of the outer side of the window. The width is calculated from the side slopes. To get more accurate indicators, measurements must be carried out in two areas, at the top and bottom of the window frame. The opening may be uneven. The smaller of the obtained results is entered into the table.
  • Measure the height of the opening. First on the right side, then on the left.
  • 20 mm is added to the width (subject to measuring windows in panel houses and 40 mm. in brick). This distance is used to overlap the future window onto the ledge (quarter). There is no need to add extra millimeters to the height parameters, since a low tide is installed below, which should be level.
  • Measure the ebb, which is presented between the side surfaces of the quarter. Add 30 mm to the resulting figure. If there are any materials left, you can always trim them.
  • The width of the flashing is measured from the window to the end of the ledge. 25 mm is added to it.
  • After closing the window, measure the inside of the opening. The principle of operation is similar to measuring the external part.

Self-measuring the window opening - can a beginner do it?

There are some features and requirements for correct and accurate taking of window measurements, subject to which even a beginner can cope with this task:

  • For correct removal For window measurements, you must have spatial imagination, as well as an understanding of the design of the house structure and window frame.
  • Measurements must be taken from the inside and from outside. This will give an accurate result. If it is not possible to go outside due to the high floor, the measurement is carried out through the window sash.
  • If the measurement is carried out for the customer, then it is necessary to clarify whether the outlines of the current opening will be preserved until the finished window frames arrive. Sometimes the dismantling of old frames is carried out by the owners carelessly, with cleaning of the concrete plaster or removing an additional row of bricks.
  • When measuring window openings in panel houses, you need to take into account their possible distortions. This will prevent the appearance of through cracks. Very often there is a discrepancy between the parameters of the lower and top parts window.
  • When taking measurements as a performer, it is necessary to agree on the external parameters of the future window, how far it will protrude from behind the wall.
  • When measuring the window span, it is also necessary to take into account the location of the ebb. The lower level of the window frame should not be lower than the edge of the projection on the outside.
  • Having decided on the dimensions of the future window frame, it is necessary to once again compare them with the internal results of the opening measurements to ensure that they are carried out correctly.
  • An important indicator is the shape of the window, as it can be varied. For example, arched, rectangular, trapezoidal and so on.

How to correctly measure quarter-quarter window openings

A quarter is a protrusion located along the outer perimeter of the opening, 1/4 of the brick. It's made to hold window design from falling out.

  • The first is the possible asymmetry of the protrusions.
  • The size of the window frame should allow the structure to extend beyond the side projection by approximately 20–40 mm. That is, the future frame should be wider than the distance between the sides of the protrusions.
  • The penetration of the structure into the protrusion from above should not exceed 15–20 mm.
  • The window sill beam must be 10 mm higher than the lower level of the protrusion for normal installation of drainage.

Steps for measuring width

  • The width of the hole is measured along the slopes from the outside. 40 mm is added to this indicator. (On one side 20 and on the other).
  • The distance between the points of connection of the structure to the slopes from the inside is measured.
  • Next, measure the width of the window opening from the inside.

Stages of height measurements

  • The window is measured without a support beam.
  • The height of the opening is measured from upper slope to the base level. The measurement is taken from the outside. To the result obtained, 10 mm is added for the top gap.
  • The height of the support beam and the height of the window structure are measured taking into account this profile.

How to measure a window opening in a wooden house

The peculiarity of window openings in wooden houses is the absence of protrusions (quarters). Most often, the frame is installed flush with the outer part of the wall. This allows you to avoid additional costs for finishing external slopes. It is enough to get by with platbands alone.

  • The first thing you need to do is measure the width of the hole for the window.
  • To do this, the structure is measured at three points, bottom, middle and top. By choosing the smallest indicator, 50 mm will be subtracted (25 on each side) to seal the window with polyurethane foam.
  • The next parameter is the height of the structure.
  • Height is measured using the same principle in three places. Taking the smallest indicator, the same 50 mm is subtracted.

Important! If there is a window sill, you need to take into account its thickness. If the future window sill is the same size as the previous one, nothing needs to be done. If it is thicker, the difference must be subtracted from the results of window height measurements.

  • If measurements are taken in a house where there is a rough frame, the opening is measured inside it.
  • Size street casing is also calculated taking into account the parameters of the draft box. For example, the box size is 50 mm. To calculate the width of the finishing strip, the grip indicator on the wall and frame is summed up, 20 mm each. The installation seam is taken into account - 25 mm and the result is 115 mm, this is the width of the casing.

Important! When installing plastic windows in a new log house it is necessary to take into account its shrinkage and possible distortion of the structure. Therefore, when calculating the height of the frame, you need to subtract 10% for the shrinkage of the house and 50 mm for the seam from polyurethane foam. Failure to maintain clearances when shrinking the house will lead to distortion of the structure and deformation of the entire frame.

How to measure a window opening in a brick house

The process of measuring a window opening in brick houses must be approached very responsibly, since the dimensions of the openings for the window do not always have standard dimensions.

Measuring features

  • Protrusions (quarters) in brick houses can reach 100 mm in depth. In this regard, you need to accurately calculate the size future design so that it is hidden behind the quarter by no more than 30 mm, otherwise it will be completely hidden and the walls of the house will fall directly on the glass.
  • When taking measurements, you also need to determine the boundary load-bearing wall. Since in these places the plaster may have a greater thickness for which adjustments should be made. Approximately a plus to the obtained frame parameters of 10–20 mm.
  • Inside, the distance between the side slopes is measured both in width and in height.
  • The height is measured from the window sill to the upper surface of the slope. Measurement is performed in two places: right and left.
  • From the outside, the distance from the slope surfaces is measured in width and height. And also the height from the upper slope to the drainage basin.
  • From the obtained indicators of the future frame, 20–30 mm are subtracted for the installation seam.

Consequences of incorrectly measuring a window opening

If measurements are taken incorrectly, the following problems arise:

  • The window structure may be larger than the window opening. This will lead to additional costs to widen the hole for the frame.
  • The window frame does not match the opening to the smaller side. As a result there will be large gaps, which will need to be sealed using special profiles or polyurethane foam, which will also entail additional costs. In addition, the window will not perform its functional tasks - protect the room from cold, rain, noise, and so on.

In conclusion, I would like to note that for high-quality installation of plastic windows, it is necessary to correctly measure the opening. There are a number of features and nuances that need to be taken into account in a given situation during the measurement process.

Thus, for openings of wooden and brick houses there is a specific technology that must be followed. But no matter what the house is, the main thing is a responsible approach to business. After all, incorrect measurements will lead to a mismatch between the window structure and the opening, which means additional costs and failure to fulfill its functional tasks.

The dimensions of the future window are taken taking into account the characteristics of its opening. Compliance with a number of rules ensures that reliable dimensions are obtained, eliminating irreparable errors.

To work you will need:
  • Roulette;
  • Level or plumb line;
  • Screwdriver (awl);
  • Pencil;
  • Paper.

The parameters are always taken from the window opening, and not from the old frame and frame. The values are measured and transferred to the drawing in millimeters.

First when closed window the “blockage” is checked - the possible deviation of the slopes of the opening from the vertical. A plumb line hangs from the top of the opening to the window sill in the right and left corners of the window. If there is a significant misalignment (more than 10 mm), the “useful” width of the opening is calculated - the distance between the vertical projections top points rectangular box on the windowsill. 50 mm is subtracted from the resulting number - the average thickness of the installation gap multiplied by two. The result found will be the estimated width of the window, and the final value is determined after external measurement. The window is opened, the width of the opening is measured - the distance between the quarters. Using a screwdriver or awl, determine the depth of the side projections. When comparing the preliminary width of the window and the dimensions of the quarters, adjust downward the desired value for the width of the window block. In this case, the frame profile should be covered by protrusions of 35–40 mm. When different thicknesses quarters, you need to achieve symmetry of the window from the outside, sacrificing the internal arrangement, which can subsequently be corrected. To determine the height of the window block from the street, the distance from the low tide to the upper boundary of the opening is measured. The found value is checked:
  • Using an awl, the depth of the upper quarter is “scanned” at 2-3 points - 40 mm is enough for assembly seam and the frame overhang by 1.5–2 cm. A smaller protrusion will require a reduction in the height of the window.
  • The lower quarter is checked - it’s good if it is 25 mm. At low depths, the height of the window decreases. For example, instead of 25 mm, 10 mm comes out, which means 15 mm is subtracted.

Next, the distance from the upper border of the opening to the window sill is measured and compared with the expected height. There should be a difference of 40–60 mm, which will provide the required gap for the foam at the top of about 20 mm and the location of the lower edge of the new window 10–20 mm higher than the old window sill. The final result is recorded after examining two more nuances:
  1. Checking the horizontalness of the opening using a level and taking into account the “blockage”, if necessary.
  2. Inspecting the bottom of the old window - a docked window sill will subtract 30–40 mm from the required window height.

When measuring an opening without a quarter, the distance between the side walls corresponds to the width of the new window minus 40–60 mm for installation gaps. The height is calculated by subtracting from the measured distance between the upper and lower walls: 20–30 mm for the seam and 40 mm for the window sill. The length of the drainage corresponds to the size of the opening plus an allowance of 60–80 mm for bends, its width is equal to the depth of the wall plus 50–70 mm. The dimensions of the window sill are calculated as follows:
  • Length - allowances of 80–100 mm are added to the measured opening width on both sides.
  • Width - the thickness of the inner part of the wall plus the overhang of the window sill, plus 20 mm (entry under the frame).

When measuring the window sill and drainage, it is taken into account that the thickness
