Oratory- one of the most popular training topics. And this is not surprising, because many people need the skills of rhetoric and oratory. Oratory skills are necessary both for work tasks and in order to be an interesting conversationalist, a charismatic leader.

On the public speaking training special exercises are used that open up participants, develop their ability to speak easily, convincingly and beautifully, help participants master the great art of public speaking.

And trainers teaching public speaking often have a question about where to get new interesting exercises that will not only strengthen the public speaking skills of the participants, but also actively involve the group, increase its energy and motivation, and be liked and remembered by the participants of the training.

Carrying out the exercise:

The facilitator sets the topic of the speech and calls two participants. They take turns speaking on a chosen topic for 2 minutes. After the presentation, the participant answers questions from the audience. His opponent has the right to ask first.

Oratory training exercise "Connected Words"

The host prepares several tickets (papers) in advance. One word is written on each (for example, penguin, hat, umbrella, etc.). The participant draws two tickets at random and makes a speech for 2 minutes, in which he beats these words. You need to make a logical presentation.

After the presentation, listeners give feedback:

  • How logical was the presentation? Bound? Beautiful?
  • I wonder if these 2 words were noticed?

Recommendation from the expert of the largest portal for coaches website Olga Paratnova:

To make the process go faster, it is more convenient to do this exercise in micro groups, for example, 6-7 participants. So it will take less time, and the participants will not get tired.

The involvement of the group will be even higher if they are given the opportunity to write 2-3 tickets themselves, then put them in a common basket (in each micro-group), and pull out from there.

In the process of this exercise, the group members line up in a clear ranking, while the one who knows how to look at what is happening impartially, objectively, and correctly evaluate other people has more chances to win.

Usually, the game "My Capital" evokes many different emotions, and provides rich food for thought. And leaves no one indifferent - that's for sure!

The exercise "Traffic Light" is unique, since it is the author's development of professor of psychology N. I. Kozlov.

Incredible in its effectiveness, an exercise that can make a "revolution" in the minds of the participants in the training in just an hour. A real "pearl".

Many people do not know how to appreciate what they already have in their lives: material, spiritual benefits, relationships with loved ones. If, in an unexpected way, a person loses what he previously had, then he falls into a state of emotional negativity. And the stronger the event is in terms of the degree of negativity, the more difficult it is for a person to maintain his positive attitude towards people in particular and towards life in general. With the help of this tool, the trainer helps the participants, without going through the situation of loss in life, to make an inventory of their values, while at the same time reducing their emotional involvement in an unpleasant situation.

A good targeted exercise that allows you to quickly help in solving one of the most exciting questions: “How to choose a job (business, profession) that would be not only profitable, but also pleasant (interesting)?”

A simple technology will help the participants of the training to believe that, firstly, the combination of "favorite work" is very possible, and secondly, to make an inventory of their desires, skills and correlate them with deeds (professions) that can bring profit.

With a high degree of probability, this exercise can be called a “win-win option”, so it is great not only for experienced trainers, but also for beginners.

A simple and effective exercise that can quickly change the attitude of participants to their shortcomings, raise self-esteem, increase self-confidence and open up a world of positive thinking.

One of the best of its kind.

The exercise significantly increases the energy and involvement of the group, creates a positive atmosphere and activates the creative potential of the participants.

The possibilities of intonation are amazing. Someone will read the subject of my message with a statement and decide that I already know everything, and I have created a high-quality training, and now I am ready to share my experience. In the same sentence, one can hear both a request for help and a doubt... Therefore, the subtitle for the report will be as follows:

What difficulties does the coach face in creating a quality training in public speaking.

Since I'm using the term "quality" as an evaluative adjective, I should explain what kind of training I call quality, i.e. very good.

It can be assumed that high-quality training differs from low-quality training in the implementation of the goals set and the recorded result. In our case, this is a series of successful public speeches of the participants, which were delivered through the application of the knowledge and skills acquired during the training. However, experience suggests that for the majority of participants who have attended such a program for the first time, it takes time to master and work out the material received at the training. Experience in solo performance required. That is why I call a training a quality training, which within a short time removes barriers to the participant's independent development. Its second task is to give the participant the opportunity to feel more confident in public speaking through the use of new technologies.

After evaluating the effectiveness of new ways of working with an audience or preparing for a presentation, the participant will try to apply them outside the boundaries of the learning environment. In the future, he will not only use the techniques acquired during the training, but also create his own.

After all, it is important for us not to train the participant to perform learned techniques (we call this behavior " Shtampov", from the word" Stamp”, denoting Mindlessly Performed Standard Action), it is important for us to see it as independent, Ability to respond flexibly to changes in the external environment.

Such qualitative changes in speech behavior, in assessing oneself as a speaking person, in assessing others are possible if a special environment is created at the training, which would allow revealing the individuality of the participant, necessary for speech creativity.

Therefore, a good training is an event that combines intellectual experience, emotional empathy, technological study of the elements of public speaking, an event that affects all three levels of a human personality: spiritual, mental and physical. Because the focus is on the Word, and not a set of tricks from the series “how to fool the audience in no time and become the favorite of the crowd.” Another level of responsibility.

This kind of event cannot be welded from pieces of other people's texts, exercises spied somewhere, manipulative methods of working with a group.

Good public speaking training requires uniqueness from the leader.

Therefore, the first difficulty in creating quality public speaking training lies in the necessary compliance of the trainer with such training or, for the director of the company, in finding someone who would be able to conduct such training.

Here are the minimum requirements that, in my opinion, such a coach should meet:

Exemplary oratory skills. Unlike, for example, sales training, where a specialist can teach salespeople without having their own sales experience, in public speaking training, the leader is inevitably a role model and cannot hide from the assessment of his speech qualities. Intelligence. Speech is a highly intellectual product. Considerable intellectual resources are required for its creation and reproduction, therefore it is difficult to imagine an unintelligent and poorly educated person as a coach. To a simple question “Why do we have so many coaches?”, I answer: seven laps, two stomp, six stages and Maslow's pyramid do not require intelligence. Give me Pavlov's dog and in a year she will be a certified trainer. True, you will need funds for a suit. Intelligence, as adherence to ethical standards. The fact is that at this kind of training, many people are ready for the first time in a public situation to talk to strangers. A bad coach with one wrong word can ruin such a desire in the bud. A public person feels defenseless and experiences any assessment especially strongly. Life experience. To speak is to reveal one's individuality to others. Life experience helps to understand someone else's individuality. At one time, when I entered the drama direction department, there was an opinion that a person no younger than 28 years old could stage a play. Otherwise, he will not be able to understand the movements of human souls. However, age and experience are not always directly compatible. Coaching skill. I consider public speaking training to be a special kind of program. Therefore, craftsmanship here has its own specific features.

The next difficulty is related to the fact that today there is no accepted methodology for conducting training in oratory skills (which exists, for example, in partnership training), which would connect everything into a single whole and determine the appropriateness of actions. What to teach and how to teach is the question. Training cannot be a set of mixed recommendations that do not have a deeply developed theoretical basis. Here is an example from the “How to effectively start a speech” area: spread your legs wide apart, keep your head straight, mentally shout “Hurrah! Let’s all go…!” and speak cheerfully. Reproducing from memory from some popular brochure. And I ask the question: Why not on one leg and not “Banzai!”? Why so, and not otherwise? Because once someone got lucky? Effective speech behavior presupposes the ability to choose those means that are appropriate in a given situation, and if a general set of techniques is given in the training, without understanding the method of their application (this understanding is what the method gives), there will be no results. One day, our hero will hear in response the same thing that he said to himself and will be sincerely surprised. And then his surprise will be repeated time after time.

Today we are dealing with different approaches to teaching public speaking. There are interesting author's finds, there are well-known names. My experience of communicating with colleagues suggests that there is, relatively speaking,

Philological approach, when the focus is on working with text, correcting language flaws, improving literacy. Such training takes place most often in the form of a seminar.

Psychological approach, in which much attention is paid to the techniques of confident behavior, gestures and facial expressions

Theatrical approach, when the object of attention is, first of all, the interaction between the speaker and the audience, consisting of speech acts.

Each of these approaches is flawed without being combined with the others. Therefore, a technique that is able to combine all three approaches into a single whole is relevant. We are actively working on the creation and testing of such a technique.

The third difficulty in creating a training in oratory is related to oratory itself, as a discipline that has preserved ancient syncretism.

This is one of the few subjects in which techniques (skill) and art (art) are tightly intertwined. Even the names of the programs reflect this syncretism (oratory - oratory). Therefore, oratory training cannot but reflect this syncretism, on the one hand, offering the development of pragmatic techniques, on the other hand, spending time on speech creativity. In the case when only one of the components dominates, the training turns either into a meaningless repetition of clichés, or into improvisation with an uncontrollable result. Oratory training should combine the functionality of a business-oriented product, healthy psychologism and the atmosphere of a creative workshop. It should be noted that today our client requires immediate and very simple solutions. And the result is possible only when in the training the participant combines technique and creative freedom, idealism and pragmatism. That is why it is difficult to create a product that would reasonably combine technology and art and would be aimed not only at developing personal qualities, but also taking into account the functional tasks set by the customer.

I have touched only on the basic (ontological) difficulties that I myself have encountered. Of course, the solution of these problems helps to cope with those issues that arise at the stages of writing a program, conducting a training, etc.

To begin with, a round table is needed, where specialists could exchange their thoughts on the methods of teaching oratory, demonstrate their methods of work in master classes. It is reasonable to invite those who study general issues of speech communication. As a result, we could bring methodological and methodological work in this area of teaching oratory to a qualitatively different level. Petersburg school of rhetoric has a long tradition and experienced professionals. Using these resources, our company intends to conduct the first training of trainers in rhetoric and public speaking in Russia. The learning process will help to answer many questions for those who are independently involved in the development and implementation of such programs.

Eloquence is a quality that is useful today not only for representatives of certain professions: politicians, teachers, TV presenters. Some people are endowed with it from birth, others are forced to long and hard to achieve its development. How to develop eloquence for those who do not yet know the art of speaking beautifully? The exercises collected in the article will help with this.

How to develop eloquence: an effective exercise

An exercise often recommended in public speaking courses that may sound funny, but produces excellent results. How to develop eloquence without attending special trainings? You need to choose an object, say, a pan, and then describe it in as much detail as possible, using beautiful literary language.

People who have difficulty with this task can start with a three-minute description. Time gradually increases until a person learns to talk about the same subject for half an hour, without repeating himself in his thoughts and without resorting to the same characteristics.

Dictionary work

How to develop eloquence with the help of a dictionary of the Russian language (any)? Studies have shown that the average person uses about 4,000 words in everyday life. As a result, people are not able to express the thoughts that arise in them due to a lack of vocabulary. The problem has a simple solution - memorizing new words.

It is necessary to purchase a small dictionary that is easy to carry with you, and study with it daily in your free minutes. You can set yourself the task of memorizing the meaning of at least 10 unfamiliar words every day. Exercise has a positive effect not only on eloquence, but also on intelligence and memory.

How to develop eloquence without resorting to the use of a dictionary? Reading helps to expand vocabulary. Moreover, it is necessary to study not only fiction, but also scientific, reference, technical.

Word replacement

How to develop eloquence to speak freely on various topics? Excellent results are shown by the exercise related to the replacement of words. Let's say you need to take a small text, and then replace all the verbs present in it with synonyms that match in meaning. Similar operations can be done with all words: adjectives, nouns, participles. This exercise leads to the activation of a passive vocabulary that a person has, but is not used to using.

A similar exercise is making up phrases with words that have the opposite meaning. Let's say a little giant, bitter sugar, a fast turtle, and so on. This has a positive effect not only on eloquence, but also on creative thinking.

Another fascinating exercise is the “deciphering” of words. It is necessary to choose a word, and then imagine that it is an abbreviation that needs to be deciphered. To begin with, it is best to use short words, then you can move on to more complex ones. Let's say summer - "affectionate raccoon tramples on sawdust." At first, common sense can be neglected, and gradually the “translation” will turn out to be more and more successful.

retelling

How to develop eloquence? Exercises related to the retelling of texts will definitely help. It is necessary to take a newspaper article, read it carefully, and then state the content of the note in a conversational style. The retelling is repeated several times, the story is supplemented and expanded, enriched with new details, including fictional ones. Be sure to comment on the article you read. You can choose a mirror as a listener.

It is important that at least the first ten sentences turn out to be coherent, smooth, without artificial pauses. It is also necessary to learn how to convey the content of the text in a single sentence. Instead of a newspaper article, you can take paragraphs from textbooks, chapters from books. In addition, it is useful to describe the paintings seen, supplementing the description with an assessment of the skill of the artist.

The most difficult task is to retell the text, the topic of which the narrator does not understand at all. However, constant training with simple texts will help you gradually master this art.

Facial control

Eloquence: how to develop this gift that many people dream of? Enriching your vocabulary and retelling texts will definitely help, but you need to pay attention to exercises that allow you to learn how to control your facial expressions.

Standing in front of a mirror, you need to retell any text (artistic, scientific, technical) without emotions, and then repeat it, connecting facial expressions and gestures. It is also useful to repeatedly pronounce the same phrase, constantly changing the intonation and pace of speech.

How to develop eloquence? This cannot be achieved by studying theory alone, because the future skillful orator needs constant practice. It is necessary to communicate as much as possible, systematically expanding, getting to know new interesting people. It is also useful to watch the speeches of the presenters on TV, attend trainings and evaluate the speeches of the speakers. Finally, you need to pay attention to developing your own sense of humor, as a good joke will serve as an ornament to any story. This can be easily achieved by memorizing funny jokes and watching humorous programs.

How to develop eloquence in a child? To achieve this, as in the case of adults, simple exercises will help. You need to ask your son or daughter to pick up one or another object, and then describe it in as much detail as possible: shape, material, color, and so on. Leading questions will help to simplify the task for the child.

Also, adults should ask children questions that do not require a one-word answer more often. For example, you can simply ask the child what he did in kindergarten today, and then listen carefully to the answer, encouraging the little storyteller to go into details.

The main thing is to exercise regularly, and then the result will not keep you waiting.

As you know, the impressions of people from communicating with each other are 55 percent based on body language, 38 percent - on the timbre of voice and diction, and only 7 percent - on the words they pronounce. Therefore, the problem of a good voice for a person is extremely relevant, since it determines almost 40 percent of his life success.

It is very important to breathe correctly. And the first few exercises will teach us that:

1. Inhale at the expense of 1, 2, 3, 4, at 5, 6 - hold your breath, at the expense of 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 - exhale.

2. Repeat exercise 1, but while exhaling, count aloud: 7, 8...15.

3. Take a short breath, hold your breath a little, while exhaling start counting: 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. Do not speed up the counting rate, do not get air.

4. Pronounce the counting tongue twister, taking a breath in the place indicated by *, and continue on the exhale, as far as there is enough air: "As on a hill, on a hillock there are thirty-three Egorka *: one - Egorka, two - Egorka, three - Egorka and so on Further".

6. This is a diaphragm exercise. Say the text below without closing your mouth. You can imagine that you have a filling and you can not close your mouth:

Two hours without food? Terrible!
I didn't eat breakfast in vain.
I want to eat like never before!
Wait two hours? Nonsense!
There is a character, there is a will,
If I can't, I won't eat!

We are on the right track and the following exercises are aimed at voice development: his strength, mobility and euphony

7. Name the floors on which you mentally rise, raising the tone of your voice each time, and then “go down” down.

8. Say the words slowly at first, then gradually speed up the pace to a very fast pace, followed by slowing down: "We drove fast, we drove fast, we drove fast ... we drove fast ... we drove fast."

9. Pronounce lingeringly and smoothly (as when singing) the syllables: mi, me, ma, mo, mu, we.

The most interesting is ahead, bringing us closer to the success of performances in front of any audience: exercises for the development of diction.

10. Say difficult combinations of sounds, first slowly, then faster:

Tlz, jr, vrzh, mkrtch, kpt, kft, ksht, kst, kshch, kzhda, kkzhde, kzhdo, kzhdu, kshta, kshte, kshtu, kshto.

11. Say words with difficult consonant combinations at first slowly, then faster:

Stay awake, philosophize, postscript, invigorate, transplantation, supersonic, tousled, counterbreak, explosion point, protestantism, stir up, over-alarmed, hit the barrel, agency, hose, supersonic, ornate, philosophize, monster, snort a lot.

12. Practice pronunciation of long consonants:

To Clara, to whom, to the throat, to the tour, to Galya, to Katya, to Kiev, to the end, to the city, distant, get involved, give, kindle, vent, get rid of, without a fur coat, ruthless, immortality, restore, confirm, repel;

13. Work on the combination of sounds can be carried out in the form of a game, using onomatopoeia:

  • Hammer nails: Gbdu! Gbdo! Gbde! Gbdy! Gbda! Gbdi!
  • Imitate horse stomp: Ptku! Ptko! bird! Birds! Ptke! Birds!
  • Throw imaginary plates to your partner: Kchku! Wow! Kchke! Kchka! Kchky! Kchki!

14. Say tongue twisters with difficult combinations or alternations of consonants:

  • Tell me about shopping. - What kind of purchases? - About purchases, about purchases, about my purchases.
  • Buy a pile of spades.
  • There is a shock with a podkopenkom, and under the shock there is a quail with a quail.
  • Standing, standing at the gate, the bull is stupid-mouthed and short.
  • A cap is sewn, a cap is knitted, but not in a cap style; a bell was poured, a bell was forged, but not in Kolokovo style; it is necessary to recap and recap the cap, it is necessary to re-bell and re-bell the bell.

This is a small part of the existing exercises aimed at developing speech and voice. But if you devote 15 minutes a day to such training, you can learn to control your voice and easily win over others.

“A poet is born, but a person becomes an orator himself” (Mark Tullius Cicero)

Even such a famous speaker of the 20th century as the "Iron Lady" Margaret Thatcher from birth had a shrill voice, not very pleasant to hear. She was lost in front of a large audience, frightened by hundreds of human eyes, while she forgot the words and did not know where to look.

But in fact, Thatcher became the “iron” later. Having perfectly understood and realized that without oratory she would not be able to achieve significant success in politics, Margaret began to work on herself. The "Iron Lady" signed up for voice training classes, took public speaking courses.

Long months of preparations for a public speech, rehearsals and trials, consultations with a theater teacher, an experienced image maker, led her to the result that we all know well.

As you can see, each of us can become a great orator. The main thing is desire. If it is, then the first step towards your comprehension of the art of eloquence has already been taken.

To be continued...

We invite you to practice oratory, exercises for gestures can be performed independently. When you communicate with one or more interlocutors, leave your hands free and pay attention to what gestures are characteristic of you. What do your hands do during a conversation, what movements are repeated more often than others? Analyze your feelings and behavior, try to understand where the gestures start from? How would you rate them yourself: are they confident and wide movements or small and fussy, what can they say about you? If you can involve others, do it, let them express their opinion about speaker's gestures in your performance. As a result, determine your level of gesticulation skills - this information will certainly come in handy.

Oratory: exercise "Mirror"

It can be called the key to the practice of competent use of gestures. Closed and open gestures can be polished with it, and the essence is as follows:

We are looking for a sample that usually gesticulates in a manner that is unusual for us, and we are trying to adopt his movements. It's great if it is a charismatic leader and a good speaker. If your gestures are energetic and fast, then for "mirroring" you need to choose a calm and respectable person. But why a person? Favorite cartoon character will do too! Got a sample? Now we are trying to copy his gestures, at first let it be only hand gestures, peeped in a short time (half a minute - a minute). Then we increase the time intervals, and connect the gait and facial expressions to the movements of the hands. Try to exercise unnoticed by outside observers, at a special training in a circle of like-minded people or at home, while watching a video.

In the exercise "Mirror" options are possible, it will help not only to master the basic principles gestures, but also practice using each of them. So, the breadth and openness of gestures can be worked out if we take two speakers as a model: one you like and one repulsive. Having carefully studied the use of gestures by them, we repeat, memorize and memorize our favorite movements.

Oratory: exercises for the symmetry of gestures

The lack of symmetry is successfully corrected by practice, especially since there are a lot of exercises that help to develop beautiful, symmetrical gestures, we will consider some of them.

  1. "Lefty". The name speaks for itself - the essence of the exercise is to make the main hand for a couple of hours, which is almost never used in gestures. We do everything with the left (or right) hand - wash dishes, hold a computer mouse, dress and gesticulate. We gradually increase the time of “left-handedness” and replace one hand with the other for the whole day.
  2. The second exercise is the notorious “Mirror” for us, now we need to try to repeat every single gesture of the selected speaker in mirror image - he raised his right hand - we left, and vice versa.

Another useful exercise is called “pantomime”. It consists in accompanying speech with a maximum of descriptive gestures. You can complicate it and come up with your own gesture for each word in the monologue.

If your problem is fast, flickering gestures, then the King exercise, designed to build solidity and fluency in speech and gestures, will help.

Imagine that you are playing the role of a king. What is he? What gestures are characteristic of him, what movements and manner of speech? We try on the royal posture and smoothness of movement, the manner of speaking calmly and with dignity, because every royal word is worth its weight in gold.

Public Speaking: Exercises for Congruence

To work out the correspondence of gestures to their content, that is, congruence, any of the exercises designed to train oratory skills will help. You can supplement our training arsenal with the fun exercise “Signal Interpreter” (more precisely, its reverse version). Its essence is that while listening to a partner, we must depict the content of the speech with gestures that are directly opposite. And if there were no partners at hand, train your creativity with the help of a TV.
