How to connect a chandelier with diode bulbs. How to connect a chandelier: installation tips. Connecting the chandelier to a single switch

The chandelier belongs to those interior items that people begin to get acquainted with almost from birth. A baby lying in a stroller or crib is looking with interest at the beautiful luminous device on the ceiling. Any large room in an apartment or house is necessarily equipped with a chandelier, which is fixed in the center of the ceiling. It not only becomes an interior decoration, but also allows you to evenly distribute the lighting load over the space of the room. To vary the illumination of a room, chandeliers with 5 or more bulbs are most often used. These lamps will be discussed in this article. Let's talk about how to connect a chandelier with 3 wires, what is needed for such work, and is it possible for a person to do this without special electrical engineering education?

Device

On the modern market, there is a wide range of lighting fixtures with intricate designs, a large number of LEDs or lamps, with remote controls. However, until now, most people prefer to install a five-arm chandelier in their living rooms.

If such a chandelier is connected to a single switch, this will entail a large consumption of electricity. Agree, it is not always necessary for all five horns to glow in the room, sometimes two or three are enough. Therefore, the most popular is the wiring diagram for a chandelier with a double switch. We will talk about such a scheme below, and before connecting the chandelier to a household two-button switch, let's figure out what such a lamp consists of and how it works.

First of all, this is the basic design for 5 horns. Regardless of where the lamps are directed (downward or upward), the fastening of sockets and lampshades with horns is carried out in the same way - using threaded connections. Each horn at the end looks like a threaded tube; a decorative cover is attached to it with a nut. But very often fastening occurs due to the bottom of the cartridge, which is screwed onto the carob thread. You need to connect the wires to the cartridge and screw in the bulbs, it is in it that their direct contact occurs. Shades are used to diffuse light, and also perform a decorative function, most often they are made of metal, glass or plastic.

Chandelier wires most often run inside a metal structure. The plafonds are attached to the luminaire body using latches, bolts or a plastic ring that is screwed onto the socket thread. From each socket inside the horn, a 2-core wire is connected to the connection box of the luminaire.

You can install a variety of lamps on a chandelier - incandescent, fluorescent, LED, energy-saving.

The chandelier body can also be equipped with a power supply or a ballast for starting LED and fluorescent lamps.

There are chandeliers equipped with reflectors that have a white or mirrored surface and create directional light.

Details on how to choose a chandelier and lamps for it can be found in this video:

Tool

Before connecting a chandelier with three wires, prepare the necessary tool:

  1. Indicator screwdriver (it is needed to determine the phase and zero).
  2. Pliers with insulated handles.
  3. Knife (to strip the insulation on the veins).
  4. Multimeter.
  5. Insulating tape.
  6. Screwdrivers (flat and cruciform).
  7. Nippers.
  8. Marker.

Devices with which the wires will be connected. These can be special pads, in which the connected wire is clamped under a screw, spring or connecting insulating clamps (PPE). Well, don't forget, of course, about the stepladder.

Wire assignment

Before connecting a room chandelier with a two-button switch, let's figure out how many wires we need and why each of them is needed.

example of chandelier assembly instructions (click to enlarge)

Any lighting device must have a passport with the diagram indicated in it. Study it carefully, the assignment of wires by color is described there. As a rule, the phase is performed in white or brown, the blue wire means zero, and there may also be a third protective ground wire, it is usually made in green or yellow. In total, 4 cores should come out of the chandelier - zero, protective ground and 2 phases.

If there is no passport for the lighting device, then we ourselves will determine where the phase is, and where is zero.

So, you have a hole in the ceiling, from which three cores stick out, one of them is zero, and the other 2 are phase from a two-button switch. If your chandelier is with protective grounding, then there will be a separate fourth wire for this.

  1. Turn off the power supply to the apartment and set the keys of the double switch to the "Disabled" position.
  2. To avoid shorting, separate the three wires that protrude from the ceiling at a distance from each other to the sides.
  3. Remove the insulation from each core by about 1 cm.
  4. Apply voltage by turning on the machine and then the switch. Use the indicator screwdriver to touch each core, the one of them, in contact with which the indicator does not light up, will be zero. Mark it with a marker.
  5. Now turn off the keys on the switch one by one and check the corresponding phase presence.

Determine the purpose of the cores in the luminaire using a multimeter:

  1. To begin with, set the "Call" mode on the device and short-circuit the probes for 1 second. An audible signal should sound, which means that you have correctly selected the measurement limit and the device is working properly.
  2. There are 2 contacts in the cartridge, one of them is phase, it is springy and located in the center, the second is zero, it is located on the side (when the bulb is screwed in, it touches it with its base).
  3. Also strip all four strands extending from the chandelier by 1 cm.
  4. Now we need to find the zero core. Attach one probe of the multimeter to the zero (side) contact in any of the cartridges. With the second probe, touch the stripped wires in turn. As soon as you hear a sound signal, it means that this core is zero, also mark it with a marker.
  5. In a similar way, determine the correspondence of the two phase conductors extending from the luminaire. This time, with the probe of the multimeter, alternately touch the central phase contacts in the cartridges. In a five-arm chandelier, one phase vein is connected to three cartridges, and the second goes to the remaining two.
  6. To check the grounding wire, you need to touch it with one probe and touch the metal body of the luminaire with the other, a sound signal will confirm the correctness of the choice.

Scheme with a one-button switch

To begin with, consider a simpler diagram - how to connect a three-arm chandelier with 3 wires. Here are three detailed step-by-step instructions. First, check the package contents of your luminaire:

  1. Having opened the factory packaging, immediately find a list of the kits included in the chandelier, and check the presence of all components against the list.
  2. Find a bracket with which the chandelier will be attached to the ceiling. It is a strip that is directly screwed to the wooden base in the ceiling, and the chandelier cover will be attached to this strip.
  3. Check the presence and integrity of all shades.
  4. Next, there should be a device (you can call it the junction box of the chandelier), in which the wires will be disconnected, three horns are attached to it, and this mechanism itself is connected to the bracket cover. A double wire (phase and zero conductors) will be pulled through this device. One end of it will be connected to the phase and zero conductors that come out of the hole in the ceiling, the other end is designed to connect to the conductors in the horns.
  5. Usually the third ground wire is included in the luminaire kit separately. On the metal case (most often on the lid), a special icon indicates the place where the protective earth must be connected.
  6. Check for the presence of three horns, cartridges must be attached to them and a phase and zero conductor must come out of each.

Now let's look at how to connect the wires in the chandelier:

  1. Take one arm and the connection box of the luminaire where the connection will be made. Two veins emerge from the horn (blue - zero, brown - phase). Pull them through one of the three holes and secure the horn.
  2. Do the same with the other two horns.
  3. As a result, in the junction box of the luminaire, 6 wires from the horns were obtained - three blue and three brown, and a double 2-core wire, which will be used to connect to the network.
  4. Strip the insulation on all 6 conductors from the horns and on the twin wire.
  5. Connect the three blue wires together from one strand of the twin wire, and in the same way connect the three brown wires to the second strand of the twin wire. Do this with a twist, you can also solder on top. Put on the insulating caps, as a rule, they are included in the kit.
  6. Carefully tuck all the wires in the junction box of the chandelier and close the top with a lid.
  7. Connect the protective earth wire at the specified location.

It remains to connect our chandelier with three wires to the network:

  1. Before starting the electrical part of the work, de-energize the room by turning off the supply circuit breaker.
  2. Fix the fixing frame to the wooden structure in the ceiling using ordinary wood screws. This must be done as firmly and reliably as possible, because the bar will have to support the full weight of the chandelier.
  3. In order not to alter anything later, immediately try on the lamp, lightly attaching the decorative bolts. Look, if everything suits you, then unscrew the bolts and start connecting the wires.
  4. It is advisable to do such work with a partner so that one person can hold the connected lamp, and the other is engaged in the connection. If there is no partner, then fix the lamp to the installed bar by tying it tightly with a string or a piece of strong wire.
  5. Start by putting self-clamping terminal blocks on the wires sticking out of the hole in the ceiling. Then connect the corresponding wires of the lamp to them.
  6. Now turn on the breaker and circuit breaker to test the correct operation. If all three lamps light up, turn off the switch, the machine and finish the work by finally screwing the lamp to the bar.

Now you know how to properly connect a three-arm chandelier, let's look at a more complex option - connecting the chandelier to a double switch.

Scheme with a two-button switch

Connecting a five-arm chandelier to a household two-button switch is performed in the same way.

  1. From the junction box comes a zero core, which is laid to the luminaire, all five zero cores from each lamp will be connected to it.
  2. The phase conductor from the box comes to a two-button switch, two conductors extend from it, which will supply voltage to one and the second group of bulbs.
  3. In the junction box, the neutral and phase conductors are connected to the phase and zero of the supply network.
  4. Instead of 6 wires in the junction box of the luminaire, as in the three-arm version, 10 (5 phases and 5 zeros) will now be output.

All five blue zero cores in the luminaire must be connected into one common harness. And from the phase veins, form two connecting harnesses - one of the three brown veins from the bulbs, the second, respectively, of the two. That is, when one key of the switch is turned on, three lamps will light up, and when the second key is turned on, two.

There are three wires in the junction box of the chandelier. Some ends are brought out to the upper part and will be connected to the veins brought to the hole in the ceiling to the point of fixing the luminaire. Connect the other ends in this way:

  • Blue zero core with a connecting harness of five zero cores of all lamps.
  • One phase conductor, for example brown, with a connecting harness of the phase conductors of three lamps.
  • The second phase conductor, for example, white, with a connecting harness of the phase conductors of two lamps.

From the hole in the ceiling, in the place where the lamp will be fixed, you have three stripped veins sticking out. Connect them to the phase and zero conductors of the chandelier, respectively. In the case of the protective grounding of the luminaire, there will be a fourth wire and connection.

You can see that, by analogy with the simpler option, connecting the chandelier to a double switch is also easy. You can see more about connecting a chandelier in this video:

I would like to give a little advice on inexpensive Chinese chandeliers. Check all wiring for integrity immediately after purchase. They often have already assembled the entire electrical part in the junction box of the chandelier, check the reliability of the contacts. It will be a shame if you then have to redo such a huge work.

Now you know how to connect a 5 or 6 arm chandelier to a double switch. In principle, if you have basic knowledge of electrical engineering, it will not be difficult for you to do this. But it will turn out to save a little on calling a professional electrician.

Traditionally, it is believed that connecting a chandelier is a complex matter that must be performed by a professional electrician. But, there is nothing difficult in connecting two or four wires, so any man can easily hang a new chandelier in his house with his own hands.

Connecting a chandelier in a new home

If this is a newly built private house, and if it is being built on its own, then everything starts with wiring. Usually, it is done internally. Although, you can also use external wiring, which is hidden in a decorative casing.

Internal wiring

A special groove is made in a concrete, brick or wooden wall for electrical wires. This groove is called a groove. You can make it either with a special device, a chasing cutter, or with an ordinary chisel. In the case of a wooden wall, a chisel. The same groove is made in the ceiling.

Create a conduit for wires

The wire is placed in a special casing, which is closed from above during the interior decoration of the room. Do not forget about the junction box, from which the wires should diverge to the chandelier, to other lamps, to the outlet and to the switch.

Junction box

The presence of a junction box will facilitate the replacement of a piece of electrical wiring if necessary.

External wiring

The principle of laying external wiring is the same, with the only difference that the strobe is not made, and the wire is fixed directly to the wall in an insulating decorative casing.

The wires in the insulating casing are hidden in the wall

If the switch is single-key, then two wires go from it to the chandelier. And if the two-key - then four. Usually, the pairs of wires in the chandelier itself are of different colors, so there are no connection problems.

One-button switch wiring diagram

When conducting the wiring, it must be borne in mind that to connect the chandelier, it is necessary to leave sufficiently long ends. So it will be more convenient to connect it. The surplus can always be hidden either in a hole in the wall, or behind a decorative chandelier cover.

Chandelier mounting types

There are chandeliers that are quite heavy. And the safety of people under it depends on how well it is fixed. How it will be attached, you need to decide by looking at the mount provided by the manufacturer. Usually, it is of two types:

  • fastening with a bar;
  • fastening with a hook.

How to hang a chandelier with a bar

Almost all modern chandeliers are fastened with a plank. It is a strip of metal that is fixed to the ceiling with self-tapping screws. For the fastening to be reliable, you need to drill two holes in the ceiling. Plastic chopiks are hammered into the holes, to which the bar is attached with self-tapping screws. Self-tapping screws, entering the chopiks, expand them, which makes such a fastening even more reliable.

Photo: fixing the chandelier with a strip

After the strip is fixed to the ceiling, you need to connect the wires to the chandelier. Here it is better to use the services of an assistant who will hold the product. Although, you can temporarily hang the chandelier at some distance from the ceiling using a strong and thin nylon rope. And having connected the wires, outweigh it as it should hang. In this case, all the work can be done by one person.

You should always use a stepladder for this kind of work. There is no need to put stools, tables, etc. on top of each other. This is dangerous for your health.

The fastening of the wires can be different. On modern products, special couplings are sometimes made at the ends of the wires. The wires that protrude from the ceiling are inserted into these sleeves and secured with a bolt. If there are no couplings, then the ends of the wiring and the wires of the chandelier are simply twisted together. They curl exactly. You cannot connect wires simply by making hooks at their ends, since the connection must be strong.

Photo: wire connections using a terminal block

Everything is insulated with high quality insulating tape. If the wires are copper, consisting of many cores, then before connecting all the cores must be twisted together. Of course, the ends of the wires must first be cleaned of insulation.

On modern chandeliers, at the ends of the wires, there are special couplings for connection: you just need to squeeze the spring with a button or a lever, insert the wire and that's it!

After the wires are fastened and insulated, you need to lift the chandelier and hang it on the bar. Usually, there is no difficulty with this. Each chandelier has a decorative cover with which you can close the ends of the wires. This work is facilitated when, when channeled, in the place where the chandelier will hang, provide an additional recess.

How to hang a chandelier on a hook

If fastening to the bar is not provided, then a hole is drilled in the ceiling, a plastic chopik is driven into it, and a hook is screwed into it. Usually, the beak is equipped with a special lock, which is driven into the drilled hole and further expands the spacer by screwing it in. The concrete ceiling is drilled with a victory drill to a depth of about 7-8 cm.

Connecting lighting fixtures seems like an easy task. It would seem, what is so difficult here - to connect two wires coming from the ceiling? However, sometimes an unexpected problem arises before the home craftsman: what to do if the chandelier has not two, but three wires? How and where to connect them? Let's try to understand this issue.

Required tool

To connect the chandelier correctly, you will need:

  • Indicator screwdriver or voltage indicator;
  • Multimeter;
  • Pliers;
  • Terminal block for three terminals;
  • Insulating tape.

You will also need a stepladder or a stable stand, a marker, a sheet of paper and a passport for the lighting fixture.

Determining the purpose of the wires in the chandelier

The simplest thing is to use the electrical circuit, which can be found in the passport for the lighting device. It usually indicates the purpose of all wires and the order of their connection. According to accepted standards, the color coding of the wires should be done as follows:

  • White or brown wire - phase;
  • Blue wire - zero;
  • Green-yellow wire - protective grounding.

If there is no documentation for the chandelier, and the color coding of the wires does not clearly indicate their belonging, it is necessary to determine their purpose using a multimeter.

Connecting a double-circuit chandelier to the mains

To properly connect a chandelier with three wires, two of which are phase, it is necessary to inspect the switch and the wires coming out of the ceiling. The simplest case is when the switch is two-key, and three wires come out of the ceiling. You can determine the purpose of these wires as follows:

  1. Take an indicator screwdriver or voltage gauge.
  2. Turn on both keys of the switch.
  3. Touch the voltage gauge alternately to the stripped ends of all three wires. When it comes into contact with the phase wires, the light on the voltage indicator will light up.
  4. Mark the phase wires with a marker.
  5. Turn off the switch. Check all three wires again. The light should not light up!
  6. Connect alternately the phase wires of the chandelier to the marked phase wires of the electrical wiring, also connect the neutral wires. The connection is made using a terminal block or twisted using insulating caps or electrical tape.
  7. Check the operation of the chandelier, alternately turning on both keys.

If the switch is single-key and only two wires come out of the ceiling, then it is necessary to check them with the voltage indicator on with the switch turned on and find the phase and neutral wires. The phase wires of the chandelier are connected to each other and to the phase wire of the electrical wiring, the neutral wires are also connected. Check the switching on and off of the chandelier.

If a single-key switch is installed, and there are three wires in the wiring, it is necessary to find out the purpose of the third wire. To do this, turn on the switch and check the presence of voltage on all wires. If the phase is detected on two wires, then the two-key switch needs to be replaced, and the chandelier can be connected using a three-wire circuit. If the phase is on only one wire, and the third wire has yellow-green insulation, then the connection is made as in the previous case: both phase wires of the chandelier are connected to the phase wire of the electrical wiring, and the grounding conductor is isolated and removed.

Chandelier connection with ground wire

If the luminaire has a metal housing, it must be grounded. In new apartments, all electrical networks, including lighting, must have a yellow-green grounding conductor according to standards. If your network meets this requirement, then to connect the chandelier, it is enough to connect the wires with the corresponding color marking using a terminal block or twist.

If the networks are old, and the insulation of all wires has the same color, then you should act in the following sequence:

  1. Determine the number and purpose of the wires coming out of the ceiling. If there are two wires, then turn on the switch and find the phase and zero with the voltage indicator. The switch is turned off and the wires are connected to the corresponding wires of the chandelier, and the ground wire at the chandelier is insulated.
  2. If there are three wires, then proceed in the same way. If there are two separate circuits and a two-key switch in the network, then the phase wires of the wiring are combined and connected to the phase wire of the chandelier, the neutral wires of the wiring and chandeliers are also connected, and the ground wire is isolated.

Safety engineering

Care must be taken when connecting any electrical appliance. All connections and connections should be carried out only with the switch off after checking the absence of voltage on the wires. Places of twists are isolated using special caps or electrical tape. If you doubt that you can connect a chandelier with three wires correctly, it is better to entrust this business to professionals.

Hanging a chandelier with your own hands is not so difficult. A person who does not have experience in carrying out such procedures may at first be frightened by the need to work with electricity. However, no serious knowledge is required to complete this task. To install a chandelier on the ceiling, you need to carry out only two operations: connect it to the electrical network and secure it.

Safety engineering

Before starting any electrical work, you need to take care of safety. Fastening a chandelier involves contact with wires through which a high voltage current flows, so this issue must be approached with utmost seriousness. Here are some basic guidelines and guidelines:

  • all electrical work must be carried out with the power off (you can simply turn off the circuit breaker in the dashboard);
  • after turning off the machine, it is worthwhile to play it safe and check the absence of light;
  • having checked the absence of voltage in the wires with an indicator screwdriver, you can safely proceed with the installation;
  • Often, a Chinese manufacturer in the manufacture of chandeliers resorts to the use of low-quality materials, so their choice should be treated more carefully.
Checking the presence of a phase by the indicator

How do I locate the wiring in the ceiling?

Before you hang the chandelier on the concrete ceiling, you need to know the exact location of the electrical wiring. If this is not done, when drilling the holes for the chandelier fasteners, you can easily drill the wires. The search process should be carried out at a time when current flows in the wires. Therefore, this procedure can be divided into the following stages:

  1. Power outage.
  2. Installation of a temporary socket with a light bulb.
  3. Electricity supply.
  4. Turning on a temporary light.

There are many devices from different price categories for locating live wires. This device must be guided perpendicular to the line along which the wiring is supposed to run. In the place where the phase is detected, it is necessary to put a mark, and then continue to move the indicator. The next mark is placed at the point where the phase disappears.

For control, these steps should be repeated in the opposite direction. In the interval between the resulting marks, the wiring is laid. Now you can safely drill holes for fasteners and hang a chandelier.

Methods for attaching a chandelier to the ceiling

If everything became clear with the wiring, now the question arises: what are the ways of fixing the chandelier? Today, the three most common technologies are most often practiced, allowing you to quickly and easily hang a ceiling chandelier. Relatively lightweight products can be fixed on hooks. In cases with heavier lighting fixtures, anchor bolts are provided. In addition, there are chandeliers that are attached to a bar (bracket). Another way is to mount it directly to the concrete ceiling.

How to hang a chandelier on a hook?

The simplest fixing for a chandelier to the ceiling is a hanging hook. To fix it in the ceiling, a hole with a diameter of about 8 mm must be drilled. If the weight of the chandelier does not exceed one and a half kilograms, you can use a regular threaded hook, which is screwed into the dowel inserted into the hole. For heavier products, expansion anchors with a diameter of at least 10 mm should be used.

If you plan to fix the hook in a dowel, it is recommended to choose a grooved one. Such fasteners are better fixed in the ceiling. The screwed-in hook should be wrapped in two layers of insulating tape.

After these manipulations, it is necessary to connect the wires from the chandelier to the mains. This can be done both with the help of ordinary twisting, and by resorting to the use of terminal blocks, which most often come with most lighting fixtures.

The next step is to attach the chandelier to the hook, and then move the special decorative overlay as tightly as possible to the ceiling surface. This bowl will hide all wire connections. This completes the installation of the chandelier. The main disadvantage of such an attachment is the gap between the ceiling and the lining. It can be either a couple of millimeters or 1–2 cm.

It is important to understand that the installation of a chandelier on a drywall ceiling in this case is fraught with unpleasant situations. If lightweight products can still hold out, then drywall will not withstand heavy lighting fixtures. The hook must be fixed to the frame, so its installation must be planned while the ceiling is being constructed.

How to hang a chandelier with a bar?

There is a way to fix the chandelier without a hook. This procedure is a little more complicated, but quite doable.

The kit should include a special mount for the chandelier to the ceiling. This fastener is called a bracket. This strip for the chandelier must be attached to the ceiling, and then mark for drilling the holes for the dowels. In the bracket itself, you need to fix a couple of screws. In this case, the distance between them should be equal to the distance between the holes on the decorative cover.

After fixing the bracket, connect the wires. You can only hang a chandelier of this type with an assistant, since it will be very difficult for one to do this. One should hold it, and the second should deal with the connection to the mains.

At the next stage, you need to get the screws fixed in the bracket into the holes of the decorative cover, and then tighten the nuts. As soon as the lamp is installed and the operation is checked, the procedure for attaching the ceiling chandelier can be considered complete.

Fixing ceiling lights directly to the ceiling

Often, such fasteners are used for small chandeliers and light fixtures. On the back of such products there are always several holes designed for fixing to the surface. If the base is made of wood, you can fix the ceiling lamp directly on the screws. If you want to hang the lamp on a concrete ceiling, you first need to drill holes for the dowels, and then fix it.

Installation under a one-button switch

If anyone can hang a chandelier on a concrete ceiling, then connecting to the mains is sometimes difficult. Most of the chandeliers installed today have two conductors. According to the standard marking, the blue or white-blue wire is zero, and the white or brown wire is the phase.

If your home hasn't changed the wiring for a long time, there will be two aluminum conductors in the ceiling. As a rule, they are not marked, however, you can determine where is zero, and where the phase is, using an indicator screwdriver. If the wiring is relatively new, there will be three wires in the ceiling: zero, phase and ground. We will not need the third one, so it can be insulated and bent to the side.

If the chandelier has two or more shades, the wires emanating from them must be connected together. Zero must be connected to zero and phase to phase. After that, the zero from the mains is connected to the connection of the zeros from the chandelier, the same with the phase. Further, you can already fix the chandelier to the ceiling.

When hanging lighting fixtures, you need to understand that it is not recommended to connect directly aluminum and copper wires. Over time, such a contact will begin to oxidize, and the connection itself will lose strength, as a result of which the twist will begin to overheat. At best, the chandelier will fail, at worst - the wiring. In such situations, the chandeliers can only be hung by connecting wires using terminal blocks.

Installation under a two-button switch

If you want to install a chandelier under a two-button switch (that is, one key turns on only a part of the bulbs, and two keys together - all the bulbs at the same time), the principle changes slightly. In this case, all the zeros of the chandelier are connected together and connected to the zero of the mains, and the phases are divided into groups.

In the first group, it is necessary to combine all the phase conductors of the lamps, which should light up from the first switch, in the second - from the second. Next, the first group is connected to the phase coming from the first key, the second - to the phase from the second key. The installation of the chandelier can be considered complete after it is attached.

How to check the strength of the mount?

After completing all the procedures, you should definitely do a check. Small flaws can slip away from your sight, so it's worth immediately visually determining the quality of the work. The wires must be completely hidden under the decorative cover.

You can determine the reliability of the fastening by slightly loosening the luminaire. Well, the main indicator is a performance check. If, after turning on all the keys of the switch, the bulbs lit up, and the wiring did not sparkle, then you installed the chandelier on the ceiling correctly!

When buying new lighting fixtures, many ask themselves the problem: how to hang a chandelier on a concrete ceiling? Indeed, the floor slab is usually very dense and hard, which makes it difficult to screw in hooks or bolts. And it is for this reason that many people prefer to seek help from a master, rather than do the work on their own. But in fact, there is nothing particularly difficult in such electrical work - even without experience with an electrician, you can easily cope with this task if you follow our advice and instructions.

Basic ways

First, let's figure out what are the possibilities for installation on the ceiling. Today there are two types of fasteners:

  • Hook- used for old-style chandeliers, as well as very heavy lamps
  • Mounting plate or bracket- modern fasteners used for light chandeliers and lamps

The specified types of fastening assume work with a concrete slab. Therefore, you cannot do without special tools. Further - in detail about how to attach the chandelier in the above ways.

How to attach a mounting plate

The most convenient installation method for concrete ceilings is the bracket. It's easy as all the necessary accessories and fixtures are usually supplied with the chandelier. The first step will be to install a special bar. This is done in several steps:

- Choosing and preparing a place for installation... Since the bracket must fit snugly against the ceiling, the mounting location must be leveled if necessary. To do this, use an ordinary putty in the color of the decor.

Before you hang the chandelier, also it is necessary to check the wiring, the quality of the wires brought out- after fixing the bar, it will be problematic to do this

- If there is already a hook on site for mounting the luminaire, then you just need to gently bend it to the ceiling or cut it down altogether. The second option is more time consuming, because even professional electricians rarely use it.

- We mark the surface. For this, a bracket is applied so that its edges adjoin the surface.

- The marked surface is drilled with a drill with concrete drill or hammer drill

- Dowels are driven into the holes, after which the bar is applied and screwed in with the screws or self-tapping screws offered or chosen by you

Done, you have installed the mounting plate for your chandelier. Before further work, check the reliability of the fastening.

How to connect the wiring

The next step in attaching to a mounting plate is connecting the wiring. To do this work is also quite simple, following the instructions:

  • Turning off the electricity in the apartment- this is required by the basic rules of electrical safety
  • We consider the wiring. As a rule, two or three wires are displayed for fixing the chandelier - phase, zero and, possibly, ground. The number of wires will depend on the age of your home and the wiring itself. Usually, in Soviet high-rises, grounding wires were not provided. But in private houses, on the contrary, this is almost an obligatory element.
  • We compare the wires of the chandelier. Phase is usually in a red or black sheath (again, depending on the age of the wiring), zero is in a blue sheath, and ground is in yellow. Alternatively, you can simply test the wires with an indicator. For this, electricity is turned on in the house, and the master touches the wiring one by one. The indicator light will inform you that there is current in the wire, which means it is a phase
  • Identical wires should be connected with special terminals. If they are absent, twist and insulate with ordinary electrical tape or special accessories. If there is no ground wire in the ceiling, the corresponding wire is simply insulated and no longer touched.

Fixture fixture

  • We attach a decorative element to the bracket and make sure there are no gaps
  • We tighten screws or nuts, tightly fixing the decorative strip

That's all - it's time to assemble the chandelier - screw in bulbs, hang shades, etc.

Hook mount chandelier

A more difficult task is to install the chandelier on concrete ceilings on special hooks. To begin with, let's make a reservation that the hooks are as follows:

  • With regular thread
  • With anchor bolt

A threaded hook is used to mount lightweight chandeliers (3-4 kilograms) - only in this case the fasteners can do the job well. For heavy luminaires weighing more than five kilograms, hooks with anchor bolts are used.

Installing the chandelier hook

In the case of threaded fasteners, the algorithm is quite simple. You drill a hole in the concrete where the chandelier is supposed to be installed. A strong dowel is inserted into this hole, into which the hook is subsequently simply screwed in.

With anchor bolts, the situation is a little more complicated, but if you have previously worked with anchor mechanisms, then there should be no difficulties. For this, a hole of the required diameter is drilled in the concrete ceiling. After that, the anchor is inserted there and screwed until it stops. The peculiarity of such fasteners is high reliability. The anchor hook is the ideal solution for heavy loads.

Connecting chandelier wires to house wiring

The algorithm for working with an electrician remains the same as when installing a chandelier on a mounting bracket. There are several features to note:

  • With a two-phase connection, the steps will be identical, however, each phase pair must be connected in series. If you are not versed in electrics and do not have the opportunity to check the voltage, then it is better to leave the installation work to specialists
  • The metal hook itself is best insulated to prevent short circuits for your own safety. This can be done using a special rubber cover or ordinary electrical tape. Make sure that there are no exposed places

Hook mount

To fix the chandelier to the ceiling, you need to perform a few simple steps:

  • We hang the chandelier according to the hook-and-loop principle
  • We push a special decorative bowl to the junction of the wires
  • Make sure that the bowl fits snugly against the ceiling surface with no gaps. This is an optional requirement, however, this makes the chandeliers look more aesthetically pleasing.

In any case, anchoring will be more reliable and effective - a chandelier installed in this way can be used for years.

How to connect a chandelier with a cascade switch

This method is an excellent solution for large rooms in which it is customary to install multi-arm chandeliers. In this case, the lamps are powered not from one, but from several switches, each of which is responsible for a certain combination of light sources. In this case, not two, but three cores are used. One of them will be common for all horns, and the other two will be responsible for their combinations of bulbs. To learn more about this, you can study the options for electrical circuits, which are easy to find on the network.

Some useful tips for hanging any chandelier on a concrete ceiling

Our tips will help you install your chandelier on a concrete base faster and more efficiently:

Before starting the installation, it is necessary to remove all decorative elements from the chandelier and unscrew all the bulbs. This will keep you safe while working, and the chandelier itself will not break. It is especially important to unscrew the housekeeping bulbs, as they contain mercury, which will enter the room if the lamp is damaged.

When checking the wires of the wiring, you must not only turn on the light on the switchboard, but also remember to use the switch in the room, otherwise your work will not show any result - you simply cannot check the chandelier and wires when examining the wiring. However, before starting the connection, you must disconnect the plugs again.

Be sure to calculate the length of the hook before you start installing it - it is important that the decorative cap completely covers the mount. If you see that you have chosen the wrong dimensions after the installation work has been completed, you will have to cut the metal with a grinder or a hacksaw, and then bend the hook with pliers - not every master will cope with such work. It is best to consider the features of your chandelier in advance.

If you need to tell a heavy chandelier, then you should use an anchor mount. It is also best not to do the work yourself, but to use the help of a partner.

When installing an anchor hook for a chandelier, it is recommended to carefully match its diameter with the diameter of the hole so that you can screw it tightly

Use special electric screwdrivers to work on installing the chandelier, which will signal if current is supplied through the wire. This will simplify and speed up your work and protect you from surprises when installing the chandelier.

If, while checking the operation of the chandelier, some light bulbs do not work or the device does not produce light at all, most likely a mistake was made during installation. Most often, this means that you have confused the ground wire with the phase. The problem can be corrected only by reconnecting the chandelier, as a rule, for this it is enough to swap two wires

Electrical safety

Chandelier installation work is not an easy task, although on closer inspection, no particularly complex decisions will be required. However, it should be understood that connecting a chandelier is working with an electrician, therefore it is important to follow the basic precautions:

  • Before starting work with the chandelier, you must turn off the plugs
  • It is recommended to use only special screwdrivers for working with electricity - with insulated handles
  • Chandelier and wires should not be touched with wet hands
  • Before drilling a hole for a hook or dowels, you should check the ceiling with a special device that will tell you where the wires run. This is especially true if the wiring in the house is old and you didn’t install it. Often, former owners save money and lay wires, including for a chandelier, without a specific scheme. Damage to the outer casing during drilling can lead to a short circuit.
  • When working with an electrician, you should not neglect the safety rules, even if you turn off the power supply - use rubber mats or rubber-soled shoes. This will save you from electric shock if something goes wrong.
  • You should not install the chandelier yourself if you are not sure about the quality of your wiring. The specialist has special equipment for electrical work, but the home craftsman usually simply does not have it.

If you follow the safety rules and strictly follow the instructions, fixing the chandelier to the concrete base will not take you much time and will be successful and safe. In some cases, for example, with old wiring, the inability to see the wire layout, without the necessary tools, it is best to entrust the work to a professional. Although quite often people who are completely ignorant of electrics do an excellent job of installing a chandelier.
