Like a garage roof. How to properly make a garage roof with your own hands: step-by-step instructions, video. Prices for different types of slate

A reliable garage roof is an important condition for the safety of the building. Roofing in a garage they are basically carried out in the same way as in other buildings, but there are some nuances.

Types of garage roofs

Based on their design features, several types of roofs can be distinguished. Based on the presence of roof slopes, there are:

  • pitched;
  • flat.

A flat roof requires a continuous elastic covering made of polymer-bitumen materials that are resistant to temperature changes. The supporting parts for such a structure are the walls of the building. Screeds or slabs can be used as a base. In some cases, they do it on a flat roof hanging garden. In this case, the structure will be operational.

A pitched roof is formed by bases, the angle of inclination of which can be from 10 to 60°. The structures focus on the rafter mechanism. The following types of roofs can be built for a garage:

  1. With one ramp. The structure has an emphasis on the walls of the building, and therefore one of the walls must be higher than the others in order to be able to create a slope. The height difference is calculated by the formula: H = tg α x s, where s is the width of the building, tg α is the tangent of the angle of inclination, the value of which can be calculated on a calculator or taken from Bradis tables. The size of the roof slope depends on the climate of the region: the amount of snow and the strength of the constant wind.

    A pitched roof is formed by walls of different heights

  2. With two slopes. This option is most often used when constructing garages, as it allows you to increase usable area building due to the attic space. A roof of this type can be made with or without an overlap, but it must rest on a mauerlat - a horizontal frame made of bars that combines the rafter mechanism into a solid structure.

    The gable roof increases the usable space of the garage due to the attic space

  3. Hip roof. It is used quite rarely for garages, but in some cases it is used to maintain a uniform style of territory development. In this case, the rafter mechanism will not have a ridge run, since the roof frame is formed by four identical slopes.

    The hip roof consists of four identical slopes

  4. Attic. This type of design allows you to arrange above garage building extra room, which can be used by the owner for his own needs. For example, you can create a workshop, storage room, office or guest room. It differs from the attic space in the height of the ceiling: at least 1.5 m. This roof project is considered expensive, since it requires steam, hydro and thermal insulation. You also need to install double glazing non-standard shape. The rafter pair will have a sharp bend, which may result in a decrease in the strength of the building.

    Minimum ceiling rise in the room under mansard roof is 1.5 m

Materials and tools for manufacturing

Proper construction of a roof with a single slope implies maintaining the slope required for the unhindered drainage of melt water after rain or snowfall. The height of the supporting parts should be different. The slope should be selected taking into account the following factors:

  1. The climate of the region in which construction work is carried out. Flat roofs with a slope of 5–7° are not advisable in regions with a lot of snow. However, they are suitable for places where there is strong wind. Roofs with a slope of 20–25° should not be constructed over detached garages in regions with moderate winds. Such structures can only be erected over attached buildings.
  2. Type of coating material:
    • when making roofs with a slope of 15° or less, it is necessary to use materials in rolls - polymer, polymer-bitumen or bitumen;
    • if the slope is up to 10°, then the roof should be installed in 2 layers;
    • at an angle of inclination of 17–20°, metal sheets fastened with a seam, flat or wavy slate are used;
    • for roofs with a slope of 25° or more, it is better to choose profiled sheets or metal tiles.
  3. Site design. Architectural features require the use of roofing of the same color and shape throughout the entire territory.

When calculating the area of the slope, it is necessary to take into account the installation of overhangs that protect the structure from rain.

Overhangs are extensions of the roof structure that protect the building from rain and snow.

It is important to consider the following nuances:

  1. There should be overhangs of 55–60 cm above the log house.
  2. Overhang over clad iron frame structure should be at least 15–20 cm.
  3. The overhang over a building made of concrete or brick should be 35–40 cm.

In some cases, the size of the overhangs is made larger to form a canopy from the entrance or along the wall. The canopy will need to be supported on support posts made on a separate or common base with the garage.

Garage roof covering material

The roof of a garage can be covered with different materials. You need to choose based on operating conditions and financial capabilities. For example, a building with a tile roof will cost much more than a building covered with slate. At the same time, laying metal tiles takes a lot of time. The most commonly used materials are:

  1. Ruberoid. This is a material based on thick or lightweight cardboard impregnated with bitumen. It is coated with refractory bitumen, after which minerals are added to it. Tensile load - 26–28 kg. One roll is enough to cover approximately 10 m2 of roof. Roofing material can withstand heating up to 80° for two hours. The material can be used with a slope slope of at least 5°. The rolled sheets are joined with an adhesive mixture or mastic in several layers or fused using a gas torch. Ruberoid is recommended to be used if a garage with a roof is being made complex shape. Main advantages of the material:
  2. Bituminous shingles. This is an artificial soft material for roofing, which is based on fiberglass impregnated with rubber bitumen with a powder of basalt or slate. Service period - up to 50 years. The decorative effect of the coating is achieved through a wide range of colors and cutting shapes. Bituminous shingles have all the advantages of roofing felt, but have a more aesthetic appearance. An additional advantage is the ability to replace individual fragments when performing repairs. The material can be installed on a roof with a minimum slope of 2°.

    A roof made of bitumen shingles has a much more aesthetic appearance compared to roofing felt.

  3. Ondulin. This is a molded mass based on cellulose, bitumen, various pigments and fillers. After drying, sheets with waves become resistant to chemical attack. The advantages include low weight and low cost. The period of possible operation is up to 15 years. On sale can be found in the material different colors. To fix the sheets, special fasteners should be used.

    Ondulin is well suited for garage roofs because it is a light and beautiful material

  4. Slate. It consists of asbestos cement sheets with a surface in the form of waves. Despite not the most aesthetic appearance and hygroscopicity, has quite a lot of advantages:
  5. Iron sheets. The material has a polymer coating and is strong and durable. The sheets are folded together into a lock, which requires experience in carrying out this work and special tools. The permissible slope is 19–30°. It is advisable to apply an additional protective coating to a metal roof, which can be done using acrylic paint.
  6. Profiled sheeting. These are wave-shaped metal sheets that are laid overlapping in one wave on each side and attached to the sheathing roofing screws, which significantly simplifies the installation process. The recommended tilt angle is from 8°.

    You can cover your garage roof with a profiled sheet in just one day.

  7. Metal tiles. It is one of the most popular roofing materials. The properties of metal tiles are similar to corrugated sheets, but they look much more attractive. The coating consists of profiled iron sheets about 0.5 mm thick with a smooth or rough surface, protected by a layer of polymer coating. Average service life is 30 years. The minimum slope is 14°.

    From a distance the coating resembles natural tiles, but costs much less

Garage roof tool

In order for the work to be carried out efficiently, you need to prepare the following tools:

  • hammer;
  • a wooden mallet;
  • jack for lifting material onto the roof;
  • roulette;
  • level for taking measurements;
  • spatula if you plan to plaster and paint the garage;
  • metal scissors if you plan to use corrugated sheets;
  • saw;
  • axe.

Some metal roofing materials will require hole preparation. In this case, you should add a countersink and a countersink to the list.

DIY garage roof installation

The roof for a garage building consists of the following elements:

  1. Rafter mechanism. It is used as a base on which all parts are fixed. The structure will take on the general loads of the roof.

    The rafter frame sets the shape of the roof and is its load-bearing part.

  2. Lathing. Serves as a support for fastening roofing.

    The sheathing pitch depends on the type used roofing material

  3. Materials for hydro-, steam- and thermal insulation. Required to retain heat and protect the building from moisture.

    In order for the roof to retain heat and protect the garage from moisture, it is necessary to lay insulating materials in a certain sequence

  4. Finish coating.

    Laying the finishing coating is the final stage of roof construction

  5. Additional parts to strengthen the rafter mechanism.

If you plan to build a garage with a pitched roof, then you need to place a mauerlat or logs on the upper end parts. The elements will be used as support for the rafter mechanism. They are fixed to the walls using wire through anchor bolts. The fasteners must be driven into the wall or embedded in the masonry.

The main parts of the rafter mechanism of a gable roof are the rafter legs. They can be:

  • suspended (supported by the outer parts);
  • layered (have intermediate parts for support).

If the span, which is formed by the supporting walls, has a length of less than 5 m, then rafter frame Only horizontal elements can be installed. They are called crossbars. In the places where the mauerlat and rafter legs are attached, you need to prepare holes for fastening. The supports are installed in these holes and securely fixed with nails or anchor bolts.

Mauerlat installation

Laying the roof for the garage should begin with the installation of the Mauerlat. For this, a 15x10 cm beam is used. If the walls of the garage are made of timber, then the upper crown can be used as a Mauerlat.

  1. For walls made of brick or concrete blocks, a reinforcing belt is made. Steel pins are mounted into it, onto which the Mauerlat will then be put on. The design of the armored belt is required not only to distribute the loads from the roof, but also to horizontally align the end surfaces of the walls. Without this element in different parts Roof slope may vary.

    Before pouring concrete, metal threaded rods are welded to the reinforcement frame so that their protruding part is several centimeters longer than the mauerlat beam

  2. Concrete is poured into the formwork, its surface is finally leveled, and then the structure is covered with a layer of roofing material and left until completely dry (at least 7 days).

    After leveling the concrete layer, the studs should extend out of it to a height exceeding the thickness of the Mauerlat by 3–5 cm

  3. The mauerlat beams are mounted. At the locations of the studs, holes of the appropriate diameter are drilled, and the beams are put on the studs. The nuts are screwed on top.

    After the Mauerlat beam is laid on the armored belt, it is secured using nuts screwed onto the ends of the studs

  4. The rafters are fixed to the mauerlat. The simplest method is two nails with a length of 150 mm, located crosswise, or iron staples. For better fastening, you can use metal plates.

    Using metal plates, you can make a sliding mount, which will allow the elements to move within small limits during frame shrinkage and seasonal deformations of the building

Marking rafters and making sheathing

At this stage you will need to mark the rafters:

Installation of rafters for a pitched roof is not difficult. When installing a rafter mechanism, you should be guided by the following principles:

As the base of the garage roof, a lathing made of slats or iron purlins should be used under the covering material. The sheathing is selected as follows:

The sheathing must be done from bottom to top.

Each batten should be attached to one nail to the rafter leg.

Insulation and waterproofing of garage roof

External insulation of a garage roof should be done in the following sequence:

Internal roof insulation is performed as follows:

  1. First of all, a waterproofing layer is performed. The joints are sealed with tape.

    It is better to lay the waterproofing film with a slight sag to avoid excessive stress due to temperature deformations

  2. If you plan to use polystyrene foam, then a sheathing must be made under it. Next, the sheets are attached using self-tapping screws. During the process, you need to glue the joints with an adhesive mixture.
  3. If mineral wool is used, it is placed in the gaps between the rafters.

    Mineral wool slabs should fit into the gaps between the joists and stay there without additional fastening

  4. The insulation material is covered with a vapor barrier film. The joints are taped with construction tape.

    The vapor barrier film protects the insulation from warm, moist air escaping from the lower rooms

Care should be taken to insulation material did not come into contact with the waterproofing film. There should be a gap between them. To do this, a counter lath made of 30x40 or 50x50 mm bars is stuffed on top of the film. If a superdiffusion membrane is used for waterproofing, a ventilation gap is not required.

Insulation of the roof inside can be done using penoizol.

Penoizol is applied to the roof by spraying

The foam material should be applied by spraying. It will penetrate into all gaps, expand as it dries and be distributed throughout the entire base. As a result, there will be no cracks into which moisture or cold could penetrate. Penoizol is one of the best materials for insulation. It eliminates the appearance of fungus and mold. The only drawback is the high cost. However, it should be remembered that the period of possible use of the material is 70 years.

Bitumen mastic is most often used as a material for waterproofing pitched roofs. The coating distributed over the roof surface can form a base with excellent waterproofing parameters. It is also possible to use anti-condensation film, which is made on the basis of viscose. This option is most often suitable for roofs that are covered with profiled sheets.

Waterproofing is carried out after the rafter system and sheathing have been completed, and the insulation has been laid:

If the roof is not ventilated, then the material for waterproofing should not be an ordinary film, but one with condensation protection. It is also possible to use a modern vapor-permeable membrane, which will remove excess water vapor to the outside. The waterproofing process can be facilitated by using a self-fusing roof. However, it is important to ensure that the coating material does not overheat.

Laying roofing

One of the popular options is the installation of roofing material made of roofing material.

Step-by-step guide to laying roofing felt

Roofing felt is mounted on a continuous sheathing. The material can perform two functions at once:

  • protect the interior from precipitation;
  • create a continuous budget coverage.

Ruberoid is a soft rolled material for roofing, so it is easy to lay. To reliably protect the roof, roofing felt must be installed in 2–3 layers. The first layer is used as a lining, and subsequent layers are used as the main coating.

In addition to roofing felt, other materials can be used roll type. They are laid out on mastic or fused using a gas burner. The second method requires increased attention, because it is a fire hazard. Such work should be performed by a person with experience.

Sequence of installation of corrugated roofing sheets

Corrugated sheeting has little weight, so it is possible to save on the manufacture of the rafter mechanism and sheathing. Rafter legs can be made from bars 100x30, 50x30 or 50x50 mm. The choice must be made based on the load on the rafter mechanism. To create a high-quality roof, it needs to be insulated and waterproofing material laid. Sequencing:

  1. Waterproofing is laid on the surface of the frame. In this case, it is allowed to use polyethylene film with a thickness of 200 microns. The film is fixed to the sheathing using thin strips with a cross-section of 20x20 mm. The distance between the slats should be such that the profiled sheet can fit tightly on the parts.

    For laying profiled sheets with a thickness of 0.4–0.5 mm, a sheathing pitch of 50 cm is sufficient

  2. Placed on top of the waterproofing material metal roofing. The corrugated sheets are secured to the sheathing using special self-tapping screws with rubber linings. For convenience, you can pre-drill small holes in the base. Self-tapping screws must be screwed in without tension so that the material can contract and expand with temperature changes.

    Sheets of corrugated sheets are fastened with roofing screws into the recess of the wave

  3. The roof is insulated from the inside of the garage. The process of insulation under corrugated sheeting is completely similar to that described above.
  4. A vapor barrier film and a finishing coating for the walls and ceiling of the attic are installed on the inside of the roof.

Features of laying seam and slate roofing

Laying a seam roof made of galvanized metal is possible only if you have certain skills and special devices. It is not recommended to do this yourself.

A slate roof can last more than 40 years. The material is laid in the same way as corrugated sheeting, but slate has a lot of weight. Accordingly, he needs a strong and reliable rafter mechanism. Rafters must be made of wooden blocks with a cross-section of at least 100x80 mm.

Garage roof operation and maintenance

Soft surfaces are quite durable, but regular inspection of the substrate is recommended. Signs that indicate the need for repairs:

  1. Various mechanical damage: through abrasion, deep crack, burst hole.
  2. The appearance of depressions in which water or dirt can stagnate.
  3. Change in the appearance of the coating: the appearance of moss, mold or mildew.
  4. The occurrence of emergency delaminations at joints.

If these signs are present, it is recommended to have your roof repaired immediately. Experienced specialists recommend that garage owners carry out regular maintenance of the structure at least once every 3 years. In this case, it will only be enough to eliminate minor flaws. If the roof remains in a neglected state for a long time, a complete replacement of the covering may be required.

Garage roof repair

The repair method depends on the type of roof and the degree of wear of the building. In private buildings, where the garage is located separately from the building, budget roofing materials with a long service life are used. Garages in cooperatives cannot be covered with profiled sheets or flexible tiles, so soft bitumen-based materials are used. There are 3 options for repairing a garage roof:

  1. Using heated bitumen.
  2. Use of soft roofing material.
  3. Use of profiled sheets or tiles.

Before you begin repair work, you will need to remove debris from the roof and clean the areas that will need to be repaired. If the previously installed coating material can be used, then you will need to cut out the recesses in places with defects with an ax. If the roof was covered with roofing felt, then the structure must be inspected for cracks or swelling. Such defects must be corrected before repair work.

When the preparatory work has been completed, you can begin repair work:

Repairing a roof using roofing felt is quite simple. You will need to cut out several pieces of material and then use them to close the recesses. Each segment must correspond to the size of the recess. Sequencing:

It is quite possible to build a durable garage roof yourself, but it is important to follow the instructions and choose high-quality and reliable materials at all stages of the work.

Car enthusiasts with extensive experience know very well that a perfectly made roof for a garage is very important, since it is not only the final stage of the entire construction, but also serves as protection from various atmospheric precipitations. Installing a roof is a complex process, so you must first become familiar with what kind of roofs are made on garages and choose the right roofing covering.

What types of garage roofs are there?

The roof for a garage can be varied, so you must initially decide on its design. In many cases, it is possible to replace one type of roof with another, but this involves additional expense and worry. That's why it's better to initial stage roof construction make the right choice.

Before choosing one of the types of roof frames, you should decide on its load-bearing characteristics, the size and shape of the box, and then consider one of the presented roof design options.

Features of a pitched roof device

A pitched roof is the simplest type of structure, which is in great demand today, since it has no analogues of similar cost. To equip such a roof, you do not need to use special building materials, special equipment or have in-depth knowledge of design.

A shed roof is the simplest and cheapest structure for covering a garage.

Features of the construction of a pitched roof are as follows:

  1. Load-bearing walls are built in such a way that their heights on opposite sides are different.
  2. The Mauerlat is laid on these walls.

    Mauerlat is laid on the load-bearing walls of the garage

  3. The rafters are laid on top of the Mauerlat and attached to the racks using metal corners.

    A rafter system is installed on the Mauerlat

  4. Then the sheathing is filled.

    A sheathing of longitudinal rows of edged boards is installed on the rafter system.

  5. The roof is insulated from the inside.

    The insulation is laid in the spaces between the rafter joists with a slight tension

Two boards connected along the wide side are often used as rafter legs, however the best option- use beams made of metal or wood with a cross section of 50*150 mm.

A pitched roof consists of the following parts:

  • the base of the roof is the rafter system to which all other constituent elements are attached;
  • sheathing is a support for the roof covering;
  • elements that strengthen the rafter system;
  • insulating materials that protect the structure from water and retain heat inside the structure;
  • directly covering the garage roof.

The upper ends of the garage with a pitched roof must have a mauerlat or logs that support the rafters. They are attached to the walls using wire anchors. The anchors themselves can be embedded in the masonry or driven into the wall.

Such a structure can be covered with any type of roofing material: roofing felt, corrugated sheeting, soft tiles, etc.

How is a gable roof constructed?

A gable roof is installed over the garage if an attic is needed. The most common gable roof gable design is an isosceles triangle.

Rafter system gable roof can be performed in the following options:

  1. Layered. The rafter beams rest not only on the ridge part, but also on the cornice part. There is a mauerlat on the walls, to which the lower parts of the beams are attached, and a strong purlin rests on intermediate pillars or an internal wall. The support frame is made before the rafter system is installed. A pitched gable roof pushes up the walls, which means it may not be suitable for all types of garages.

    Layered rafters rest not only on the load-bearing walls of the building, but also on the internal support

  2. Rafterless. In this case, you can do without detailed calculations, special lifting mechanisms, and also complex structures. The abutment is a triangular-shaped pediment that is traditionally made of brick. The disadvantage is that there are restrictions on the length of the building. Maximum size- These are nine-meter metal beams.

    Rafterless roofing can only be used with a building length of no more than 9 meters

  3. Hanging. The support is made exclusively on load-bearing walls, and there will be no bursting of the box from significant loads caused by heavy snowfall or the weight of the roofing. The rafters are attached to each other at the ridge and secured with a cap. The frame does not move apart thanks to the ties that are installed at the bottom of the rafters. If the design implies large spans, then install the crossbar, headstock and struts, which prevent sagging of the rafter system.

    Hanging rafters rest only on load-bearing walls, and they are protected from creeping by stiffening ribs: tie rods and crossbars

Installing a gable roof is very simple, since its base consists of several rafters of identical sizes. The installation of the frame rafters is done sequentially, and then they are connected at the very top of the roof.

The roof support is the walls of the building. For correct calculation the size of the ridge, as well as the rafters, it is necessary to know not only the angle of inclination of the roof, but also the dimensions of the building. To accurately make a canopy, you need to add about half a meter to the length of the rafters.

Installation of a gable roof begins with the arrangement roof trusses, which are assembled on the ground according to a template. The Mauerlat is installed around the perimeter of the building, and then it is attached to the wall using anchors. A layer of roofing felt is made between the Mauerlat and the wall.

Characteristic features of a sloping roof

A broken roof is a structure with numerous broken lines. In principle, this is a type of gable roof that allows you to create an additional room on the attic floor.

There are the following types of broken roofs:

The reliability of the structure and its comfort depend on the type of roof chosen. However, sloping hipped roofs are becoming most popular today, since they ideally combine two features: the effective use of additional space and the low complexity of installing the rafter system. This approach involves obtaining full-fledged living quarters with small financial investments.

The installation of a sloping hipped roof of the garage allows you to create full-fledged living quarters on the second floor

To build a sloping roof, it is necessary to make a fairly dimensional structure of the rafter system, however, during its construction, modular installation methods can be used, so it is not necessary to use different lifting equipment. The rafter system and racks are cut at the desired angle in those places where there are fractures in the slopes. To secure the knots, you need to use “kerchiefs” made of plywood with a maximum thickness of 2 cm.

This design hipped roof Perfect for small garages where it is not possible to construct a sloping roof of a more complex shape. For buildings with large areas install another rafter system.

Used garage roof

An operable roof is a flat-shaped structure that has a special coating. A similar structure can be built over the entire area of the building or over some part of it.

The roof in use is conventionally divided into the following types:

  1. Roof with seating area. Here you can place a cafe, make an open area in the sun, arrange a gym on fresh air etc.

    You can make a comfortable seating area on the roof of the garage

  2. Roof parking. Intended for organizing car parking.

    Such a parking roof can only be built on large garages

  3. Green roof. It is a fertile layer on which flowers are planted and lawns are established.

    On the flat roof of a large garage you can arrange a “green” recreation area

  4. Roof terrace. It has an artificial or natural surface, which is intended for driving, walking or just relaxing (paths, tennis courts, and so on).

    On the used flat roof of the garage you can arrange a swimming pool, tennis court, recreation area, etc.

The construction of such a roof must comply with the standards specified in SNiP, since the operating time of the roof depends on the correctness of the selected materials, the calculations performed, and the consideration of loads.

Typically, the roof structure has a multi-layer structure, and it is done in this way:

  • rigid base;
  • mandatory vapor barrier layer;
  • insulation;
  • screed at the correct angle;
  • waterproofing layer;
  • protective separator;
  • finishing coating.

An existing roof can also be constructed using granite gravel (fraction 25/32 mm), which is laid on geotextiles. In order for the roof to operate normally, gravel is laid with a thickness of at least 50 mm. Geotextiles in parallel with gravel will make the coating more stable.

The undeniable advantages of a sliding roof for a garage

Today, mobile sliding roofs, which have many advantages over traditional roofs, are of great interest.

According to its design, a sliding roof can be of the following type:

  1. Entirely removable. In this case, the entire structure or a certain part of it folds up and leaves its place.
  2. Sliding. The roof moves or opens in different directions.

    A small shell garage is the simplest version of a garage with a retractable roof.

  3. Moving. The structure moves along special rollers.

    The fully movable garage roof is integral with the overhead gates

  4. Partially movable. Only a separate element of the roof becomes mobile.

    Very convenient small garage with a partially retractable roof created by Japanese engineers

By functionality Sliding roofs are divided into:

  • seasonal (the structure moves only during a certain period, usually in summer);
  • permanent (used throughout the year);
  • temporary (used for mobile light structures).

In addition, a sliding roof can be not only permanent, when the entire structure or a specific part of it is covered, but also attached over various buildings to the main house. Among other things, a retractable roof can also be designed over other free-standing buildings, for example, greenhouses, greenhouses or observatories.

The main elements of a retractable roof are load-bearing profiles made of aluminum, which are made with a variety of protective coating as:

  • anodizing;
  • powder paint;
  • various enamels.

To give rigidity to the profiles, a steel pipe with a square cross-section is installed inside them. However, the most durable forms of sliding roof frames are considered to be:

  • dome;
  • arched;
  • single-pitched with a slope angle of at least 45 o.

For other types of roofs, which have a slope angle of up to 45 o, only reinforced coverings and profiles are used.

The highest quality and most effective options for arranging a retractable roof are considered to be coverings made of plexiglass, triplex or tempered glass. This type of panel can withstand hail up to 14 mm.

What types of materials are used for garage roofs?

A garage roof can be built from a variety of building materials, and their cost depends on the “thickness” of your wallet, and installation methods depend on the time you have. Therefore, it is worth thinking carefully about the type of roofing material for the garage.

A fairly popular and well-known material among consumers, which is affordable and easy to use. One roll is enough to cover 10 m2 of roofing and forget about it for 15 years. The main advantage of roofing felt is that this coating is inexpensive and durable, but for its use it is necessary to make a sheathing, as well as a rigid frame.

Ruberoid is one of the most inexpensive and popular materials for covering garage roofing

Waterproofing is considered high-quality, provided that it is made of at least four different layers, and different types of roofing material are used.

Corrugated sheet

This is a modern material that is replacing slate, since the service life of corrugated sheets exceeds half a century. When deciding how to cover your garage roof, consider purchasing load-bearing wall material of the NS brand. The wavy profile of the sheet is made using cold rolling. All types of corrugated sheets have an identical wavy trapezoidal shape, but the size and height of the material differs for all brands.

Corrugated sheeting is one of the most popular materials for garage roofing because it is lightweight and lasts at least 50 years

Corrugated sheeting is a resistant, fireproof, as well as water and soundproof roofing material that meets state regulations. Its advantage is its reusability.

Slate

Traditional slate is often used for garage roofing, as its service life is about 40 years at a moderate cost. The material is an asbestos-cement board, which is quite simple to install - holes are drilled into which galvanized nails are driven with an allowance of a couple of millimeters. Further, the installation of this material is carried out identically to the installation of a roof made of corrugated sheets with the only difference - the corners of the internal spans are cut off.

Slate is laid on the garage roof in the same way as corrugated sheeting and secured with special slate nails

Roof tiles

The garage roof can also be made of cement-sand or ceramic tiles. These types of natural coatings last approximately 100 years and are characterized by resistance to ultraviolet radiation, fire resistance and the ability to withstand a variety of temperature changes. In addition, the tiles perfectly absorb noise, do not retain static voltage and have low thermal conductivity.

For laying tiles on gable roof special locks are used on each product

If a roof is being built with a slope of about 12 degrees, then metal tiles are the ideal option. The flooring is made of galvanized steel 0.6 mm thick, which is coated with a polymer composition. To give the material its shape, it is stamped. Metal tiles are sold in a varied palette of colors.

Metal tiles are laid in large sheets, often corresponding in length to the dimensions of the slope

Seam roof

Metal is the lightest building material, allowing you to save money when installing the frame. Of course, when maintaining a metal structure, you will have to spend a lot of money, but this material is suitable for any type of roof. For example, when planning to build a metal roof, when arranging it, you can only get by with sheathing, which is made of beams.

To create a seam garage roof, special tools are used to form a sheet fastening profile

Installing a seam structure requires the use of special equipment and the involvement of professionals, since even minor “punctures” in the calculations will lead to distortions, which are much more difficult to eliminate than to immediately build the roof correctly.

How and how to insulate a garage roof

Every motorist dreams of a warm garage, and making the roof insulated is quite simple.

In modern construction, the garage roof is insulated in combination, that is, traditional insulation is combined with a heat insulator that reflects light and does not allow infrared radiation to pass through. However, in some cases such costs may be unreasonably high, for example, if the building is detached. Then use classic materials, such as:

  1. Mineral wool. It has excellent technical characteristics. It is used only with hydro- and vapor barrier material, which protects mineral wool from water. In addition, mineral wool is quite affordable.

    Mineral wool is inserted into the cells between the rafters and secured with wire or fishing line before the final ceiling covering is laid

  2. Glass wool. This material is cheaper than other insulation materials, but has a low degree of fire resistance. If you plan to make a pitched roof, then it is better to buy a special type of glass wool, which has a high density structure. This material is produced in rolls with a width equal to the normal distance between the rafter legs.

    Glass wool is one of the most inexpensive and available materials for roof insulation

  3. Styrofoam. This is a waterproof material, which in its thermal insulation characteristics is similar to mineral wool. Polystyrene foam is a flammable insulation material, but the PBS-S brand with the addition of fire retardants has the property of self-extinguishing. Due to these features of the material, it is used as insulation for garage roofs. In addition, it does not rot, mold and mildew do not form on it.

    Laying foam plastic in the sheathing of a garage roof does not require special skills

  4. Penoizol. It is a liquid foam, but with better performance. It is resistant to fire and water, hardens when placed in a confined space, and forms an ideal seamless coating. With all this, penoizol is cheaper than any sheet foam, and its service life is about 40 years without loss of characteristics.

    To insulate the roof with foam insulation, it is necessary to use special equipment for spraying

You can also use traditional options for insulating a garage roof, for example, using sawdust, but with modern materials they don't compare.

The garage space is an object with a high probability of fire, so it is necessary to purchase insulation with improved fire resistance characteristics.

Insulating the garage roof from the inside

Required tools:

  • special buttons or furniture stapler with staples;
  • vapor barrier film;
  • carpentry tools;
  • self-adhesive tape;
  • waterproofing;
  • insulation.

Thermal insulation of the roof from the inside is carried out as follows:

  1. We carry out waterproofing. We seal the joints with special tape.

    A special film is used to waterproof the garage roof from the inside.

  2. We install a heat barrier. When using sheet foam plastic, it is necessary to initially install the sheathing, and only then secure the material with self-tapping screws, simultaneously gluing all joints polyurethane foam. The mineral wool is placed in the space between the rafters and is held there due to a slight tension caused by the slightly larger sheet sizes than the distance between the rafters.

    Polystyrene foam is placed in the cells between the rafters and secured with special dowels or polyurethane foam

  3. Vapor barrier. We cover the insulation layer with sheets of vapor barrier film, and glue the joints with self-adhesive tape.

    Vapor barrier material is attached to the rafters on top of the insulation

Such a cake is placed not only on wooden beam structures, but also on reinforced concrete slabs. Before installation, the beams are protected with sheet material, after which waterproofing is attached to it, then insulation and vapor barrier.

Do not allow the waterproofing film to come into contact with the insulation; there must be a certain distance between these materials for ventilation. Direct contact is only allowed if a superdiffusion membrane has been used.

We insulate the garage roof from the outside

From the outside, the roof is insulated during the construction stage, since it is not very convenient to open a completed building in order to correct shortcomings. Please note the presence of a vapor barrier, which must be installed on the side of the room. This way you can prevent not only re-condensation of vapors, but also avoid unpleasant leaks. How to insulate a garage roof from the outside:

Installing insulation from the outside is in many ways similar to installing it from the inside - the material is also laid between the rafters

  • A hydrobarrier is last layer. It is advisable to seal the joints with adhesive tape.

    A well-laid water barrier will protect the garage roof from water penetration

  • On last stage We install material for the garage roof.

    How to repair a garage roof

    Leaking is the main nuisance that a garage roof brings, and the reasons for this may be:

    • exhaustion of the strength resource during operation;
    • negative impact of weather;
    • incorrect roof installation;
    • mechanical damage due to careless cleaning of the roof from snow cover;
    • low quality finishing material;
    • neglect of the installation of waterproofing;
    • violation of installation standards when using roofing material.

    Leaks must be eliminated at the stage of mold or wet spots appearing. Initially, it is worth checking the joints and joints, then the integrity of the roof for holes, chips or other damage. In addition, it is necessary to eliminate various types clogging, for example from dry leaves, which clog the corners of the roof and accumulate moisture.

    The method of eliminating a leak depends solely on the amount of damage and the characteristics of the roofing material. Partial renovation can be carried out for small-piece and soft roofing materials. The scope of repair work for panel and sheet material depends only on the complexity of the structure and its damage.

    Using roofing felt, you can quickly and inexpensively completely repair your garage roof and get rid of leaks

    When preparing drawings and a garage roof project, immediately include in the estimate an extra 10% for other expenses that are difficult to foresee.

    High-quality construction of a garage roof - best option minimize your expenses if you have necessary knowledge in construction. The choice of material and tools is of great importance when arranging a roof. Just read the necessary information and you can do all the work yourself. We wish you success!

    Garage roof structures come in several types. In order to choose the best one, you need to familiarize yourself with the specific features of each of them. So, different variants mounted differently.

    Peculiarities

    A roof for a garage is different in many ways from a roof for a house. This is due not only to the fact that the garage is used as an additional utility structure, but also to the fact that there is no need for such high-quality thermal insulation. Therefore, roofs are covered with inexpensive materials that do not cause difficulties during their installation.

    A specific feature of the garage roof is that its shape and design are selected relative to the location of the garage house. In addition, it is determined by the stylistic coloring of the facade of the main house, as well as the surrounding landscape. However, it must be remembered that there should not be any special frills here, because the garage is still not the main structure, and in theory it should not attract too much attention to itself.

    Due to the simplicity of the design, garage roofs will not cost much. This is due to the low cost of materials and repair work. Due to the ease of installation, construction work will cost little. Thanks to this same feature, installation can be done independently, without the involvement of specialists.

    Such high-quality insulation is not required, so this side detail can be easily dispensed with.

    Kinds

    This is not to say that garage roofing comes in a wide variety of types. Simplicity and functionality are the fundamental principles in accordance with which the choice is made in favor of one design or another. This is the reason for such a meager choice.

    The choice in favor of one type or another is made based on several factors. Firstly, the climate zone in which the garage is built is important. How windy the area is and how much rainfall there is directly affects the choice of design and roof slope. Secondly, again, overall harmony is important. It is much better if the garage roof is similar to the one on the house. Thirdly, the chosen material plays a role. Some types look good only on roofs with one slope, others - with two.

    Before choosing one type or another, it is necessary to analyze the situation with the construction of a garage. First of all, you need to know:

    • the climate in which the garage building will be located;
    • whether the garage will be adjacent to the house or separate;
    • what material is the roof made of?
    • height of the roof above ground level.

    By answering each of the questions posed, you will be able to choose the best option that is suitable for your particular case.

    Each type of roof has its own subtypes, which are also worth keeping in mind. The use of one or another subtype is determined depending on the area of the roofing. Thus, it is possible to prevent the roof from collapsing, its subsidence under the weight of precipitation, and the load on the foundation is also regulated.

    Flat

    A roof with a slope height of up to 3 degrees is classified as flat. Compared to pitched roofs, it has a number of advantages:

    • a flat roof takes up much less space than a pitched roof, resulting in savings on materials for its manufacture;
    • a flat roof can be built much faster than a pitched roof, since complex calculations regarding the rafter system are not required;
    • repair flat design much easier and safer due to the fact that the risk of falling is reduced when sliding down a surface with a steep slope;
    • if the garage is attached to the house, then such a roof can be converted into a balcony or used as a terrace on the second floor.

    However, flat roofs are not suitable for areas with strong winds and a large amount of precipitation, since they may not withstand and collapse under the weight of snow. This also explains the fact that such a roof will have to be periodically cleared of snow and icy crust.

    photos

    To drain water from such roofs, it is often necessary to organize additional drainage channels. The tightness of the roof is under threat: this must be constantly monitored, carrying out preventive maintenance every year.

    Low slope

    Low-slope pitched roofs are considered a universal solution. They are suitable for areas with an average climate. The garage may not be located in the city, but it should not be located in a windy steppe space. The slope angle of low-slope structures varies from 3 to 30 degrees. The advantages of such roofs are some features that will be discussed below. A special feature is that the slope for each specific case is determined through calculations, and the minimum acceptable value is selected. Calculations are made based on the roofing material.

    When building low-slope roofs, several specific features will need to be taken into account:

    • The need to equip a drainage system of internal or external type.
    • The roof must have good tightness.
    • The need for a ventilation gap under the roof. Its size is determined according to the angle of inclination: the flatter the roof, the larger the gap.

    Thus, choosing a low-slope roof guarantees savings on materials, but you will have to spend a lot more effort and money on the structure itself. Make sure that the choice of a low slope is justified in terms of aesthetic appeal.

    Steeply inclined

    The angle of inclination of steeply pitched roofs starts at 30 degrees. As with other options, this variety has both pros and cons. It is necessary to use roofs with a steep slope if the garage is located on windless areas (for example, in urban areas). If there is a lot of snow in the area, then such a roof will allow you not to waste time on cleaning it, because the snow will not linger on it, rolling down steep surfaces.

    This option is completely unacceptable for windy areas. Thus, the roof can easily be blown away by a strong gust of wind. If the area is windless and there is little precipitation, then the costs of such construction will not be justified.

    Thus, the choice of one or another variety is primarily determined by the location of the garage and the site as a whole.

    For steppe windy deserts, it is best to choose flat or low-slope roofs; for wooded areas, low-slope options are best suited; and for urban areas with high rainfall optimal choice will become a steeply inclined variety.

    However, roofs are divided not only by angle of inclination. There is another classification of roofs - by the number of slopes. For garages, only two types are used: single-slope and double-slope.

    Single-pitch

    Shed roofing is valued for its simplicity and functionality.

    • Firstly, its installation actually takes less time than the construction of a gable version.
    • Secondly, it will not be difficult to make all the calculations for the required amount of material. This step can be taken independently, and the accuracy of the calculations will not be in doubt.
    • Thirdly, such a roof requires significantly less material than a gable structure of the same area.
    • Fourthly, a pitched roof is an excellent option if you need to design a garage attached to the house. She looks the most harmonious.
    • Fifthly, it is believed that pitched roofs are more durable than gable roofs. In addition, they are more reliable and stronger, and thanks to timely repairs they can last up to 50 years.

    Mono-slope structures are not without their disadvantages.

    • Due to the fact that in most cases single-pitched options are flat, the load on them increases in winter period. Snow doesn’t roll off on its own, and you have to either clear it off yourself or trust that the roof will bear it.
    • With a lean-to option, you will definitely have to abandon the attic, even if initially small attic space it was still planned.
    • This variety is more difficult to equip with decent thermal insulation.
    • Many people notice that the single-pitch structure looks rustic compared to the expressive gable one, and in some cases this causes certain inconvenience to the owners.

    Gable

    A gable roof is more often used for detached garages. Seeing it on a structure attached to a house is very rare. Nevertheless, gable options have their advantages.

    • Thanks to its special shape, such a roof does not retain snow and rain. They roll down instead of weighing down the structure.
    • Though gable roof and more complex than a single-slope one, but the garage version can be made independently, if you take into account some amendments.
    • By choosing the basic option, you can save a lot on work, since you will be able to complete it alone, or at most with a partner.
    • The gable design allows it to be equipped with good thermal insulation, thereby reducing heat loss. So, when planning a warm garage, other roofing options cannot be considered.
    • The gable roof allows you to organize a small attic where you can store tools and other equipment. In cases where a mounted gable design, it turns out to increase the ceiling height.

    Having assessed exactly how you want your garage to look in the end, you can easily choose the type of roof structure for it.

    Materials

    Roofing materials are not only those on the outside. For internal construction, their own types are also used. If the rafters can be made from wooden beams, then several materials are suitable for waterproofing. Most often, roll insulators are used for this, for example, bikrost, roofing felt, roofing felt. Instead, you can use bitumen mastic, which will reliably protect the roof from water penetration.

    But it is also important not to buy too expensive materials for covering the garage roof. For example, a garage roof lined ceramic tiles, will look strange and inappropriate. If the roof of the main house is finished with such an elite material, it would still be better to choose a cheap equivalent for the garage. This will show both the good taste of the owner and his practicality, allowing for significant savings.

    For an internal wooden structure there is also an analogue - a concrete frame. It should be kept in mind that Concrete is much heavier than wood, the load on the foundation of the building will increase significantly. In this regard, before choosing such an alternative, it is necessary to ensure that the strength of the structure is sufficient.

    Corrugated sheet

    One of the most common materials used to cover a garage roof is corrugated sheeting. This type is so often used due to a number of advantages, including - big choice colors, price, ease of installation. In addition, the corrugated sheet is durable. If you lay it properly, a durable, aesthetically attractive coating will be guaranteed.

    Corrugated roofing differs in the height of the corrugation, the width of the sheets themselves and the type of galvanized steel used in production. The material of the NS category belongs to the roofing class, so when choosing, you should definitely look for this particular marking. Please also pay attention to the presence of the GOST mark. If it is not there, this means that during production other standards were taken as a model or there were no standards at all. From this we can conclude that corrugated sheeting without such a symbol is not always of high quality.

    For the roof it is necessary to choose profiled sheets with polymer coating. Polyvinyl dichloride, pural and polyester are considered suitable. The first is the most durable sample, but its cost is slightly higher, but the other options are cheaper, but less wear-resistant.

    Slate

    Dull gray slate material has long become a classic of the genre, and when it comes to slate, everyone imagines just such roofs. Despite its unattractive appearance, slate has excellent strength characteristics. If you choose a high-quality sample produced in accordance with modern technologies, it can easily last up to 50 years.

    • Slate is made from different types raw materials. Plastic, asbestos-cement, soft, rubber and metal are used. Each of these subcategories has its own characteristics and advantages.
    • For example, the asbestos-containing option has excellent technical indicators and low cost, but asbestos is toxic, and this type of slate is harmful to health.
    • Soft slate does not have frost resistance, but it is strong, durable and at the same time flexible.
    • Plastic slate lasts up to 15 years without loss of strength, but it must be installed carefully, given that it tends to either shrink or expand depending on temperature changes.

    There is a wide variety on the market now decorative solutions, and you can choose slate material of any color.

    "Ondulin"

    The company name Ondulin has long become a household name, which is used to designate roofing sheets that imitate other materials. There are three types of them that are most popular.

    • Smart. The material has a small mass, as a result of which it is possible to carry out installation alone, without the help of a partner. Thanks to optimal size sheets and their small thickness of only 3 mm, you can completely sheathe the roof of a garage in one day. It will take a lot of nails. And also when working with Smart material, the joints will need to be covered with additional decorative elements.
    • Diy. This variety is more rigid than the previous one. This is due to the fact that the waves here are more frequent and higher. The mass of the material remains the same. Thus, such options are more suitable for roofs of complex architecture, rather than for elementary garage structures. The material is laid overlapping, due to which its consumption increases.
    • "Tile". Finishing with this type of sheet is indistinguishable from finishing with metal tiles, but it is much easier to implement than laying a real tile roof. There is a wide variety of color options, and there are not only plain roofs, but also spotted ones.

    fold

    Steel roofs raise more questions than all the others.

    • Firstly, they are not strong enough. Any severe mechanical damage will easily warp the overly flexible material.
    • Secondly, steel does not hold temperature at all, as a result of which it will be necessary to take additional care of the heat-insulating layer.
    • Thirdly, the waterproofing is also not at the proper level: the roof can easily begin to leak, jeopardizing the safety of your car. The roof will need to be additionally sealed.

    However, seam steel floors have several significant advantages. In the first place is the price: it is an order of magnitude lower than the cost of other options. Repairing this roof is also easy, since the panels are fastened to each other using ordinary tucks. The roof can be covered with this material even in winter. Due to its flexibility, steel is ideal for winter installation. So, because of all this, seam roofing coverings confidently remain on the list of the most popular among all materials for the design of side buildings.

    Ruberoid

    Roofing felt is laid on a continuous sheathing. Its advantage is that it is sold in rolls, and there will be no installation difficulties. However, there are several pitfalls here too.

    • It should be borne in mind that the material consumption will be impressive. Ruberoid is laid in three layers, which are coated bitumen mastic for better thermal and waterproofing.
    • The service life of the material is 15 years, after which it will need to be dismantled.
    • The material is mainly used for finishing flat roofs. Roofing felt coating cannot be called aesthetically attractive: when pitched roofs are sheathed with it, they are additionally covered on top with some material with better decorative properties.

    Ruberoid for roofing is produced in four main categories, which differ in the type of base.

    • Rubemast gives the coating durability due to the fact that it is more flexible and less susceptible to cracking.
    • Fiberglass ruberoid or steklomast has characteristics similar to rubemast, but it is based on fiberglass rather than construction cardboard.
    • Roofing felt is practically not produced, since it lags far behind in quality, but in terms of production price it is on par with other types.
    • Euroroofing material has a complex structure. This material is the newest of all, and its qualities greatly exceed those of traditional roofing felt coatings.

    Polycarbonate

    This variety is of greatest interest due to its unusual appearance. The peculiarity of polycarbonate roofs is that they are transparent. Depending on which type of polycarbonate is chosen, the degree of transparency varies. Thus, the surface can be from slightly cloudy to practically impervious to light. Based on their structure, there are monolithic and cellular polycarbonate slabs. The first option is cheaper, but the second does not require additional thermal insulation.

    Polycarbonate is resistant to all kinds of influences, both physical and chemical. It is non-flammable, so it can be considered a fireproof material.

    However, it is worth keeping in mind that if you plan to make a warm garage, polycarbonate will not work. Due to the installation of additional thermal insulation, all its decorative qualities will be lost, and the result will not please you as much as it could. If you need a warm garage, then it is better to make the roof from a cheaper material.

    Slope angle

    The installation of a roof involves complex calculations, including raising the roof. Regardless of whether a gable or single-pitch structure is chosen, lifting is mandatory. The only exception is flat roofs, but there is always a slight slope of a couple of degrees.

    The height to which the roof needs to be raised is determined by many factors. An important detail is how exactly the slope will be located. note that It is optimal to place the slope on the windward side. It doesn’t matter whether the garage is closed from the wind by other structures or a fence - this rule is immutable.

    Many car enthusiasts value and love their cars very much, so if possible they try to hide their car in a warm and cozy garage. However, not every car enthusiast has a warm and cozy garage. But many car owners decide to build their own garage.

    Of course, build brickwork It’s not at all difficult to do, the difficulty lies in building the garage roof. Therefore, many initially have a reasonable question: how to make a garage roof with your own hands?

    It is possible to build a garage roof on your own if you have basic builder skills and have general idea about the final result of the construction.

    The simplest and best option when building a roof on a garage is a pitched roof. It will not be possible to assemble such a structure big problems and difficulties, besides, this option has its advantages:

    • does not require any experience or knowledge
    • does not require large financial expenses
    • The construction process will not take much time, usually no more than 3-4 days
    • the design of such a roof has a long service life

    Features of calculating a roof for a garage

    It should be noted that a pitched roof has several different types of structure structure. Therefore, there are situations when the garage roof extends from a residential building, but the most correct option is when the garage structure is separate and not adjacent to other buildings.

    Determining the slope angle

    In the process of designing a garage, it is very important to correctly and correctly slope the slope; this is necessary for water drainage during rains. In this case, it is necessary to install supporting walls with different levels. However, the slope of the slope depends on various nuances.

    Features of climatic conditions. In this case, it is recommended to make slopes based on the characteristics of the climate, for example, in a climate where there is a large amount of precipitation in the form of rain and strong and gusty winds, it is recommended to make a slope of no more than 5-7°. But if the climate is more severe with a lot of snow, in this case it is recommended to make the slope no more than 25°.

    Selection of roofing material. Of course, one of the most important questions in roof construction is how to cover the garage roof? Basically, bitumen-polymer rolls or the so-called “roofing felt” are used for roofing garages; it is also good to use slate or sheets of steel or metal tiles for such purposes.

    However, they all have different angle slope For example, “roofing felt” has an indicator of no more than 10°; for slate it is recommended to have a slope of no more than 20°, but for metal tiles a slope of about 25° is typical.

    External view of the architectural panorama of the site. In this case, it is necessary to maintain almost the same slope of all roof structures; this is necessary to create a single general panorama of the site.

    Calculation of the rafter frame

    In our modern times It is not so difficult to calculate the necessary parameters when designing if you use special modern programs or construction calculators. In this case, you just need to enter all the parameters of a garage with a pitched roof and the result will automatically give you all the most necessary information.

    Level of complexity of the rafter system

    In the process of building a pitched roof on your own, it is very important to make the entire structure very durable. In this case, it is necessary to additionally install special structural reinforcement units.

    As a rule, a garage with a pitched roof for one passenger car has approximate dimensions of 3.0 x 5.5 meters, however, if desired, it can be changed to reduce or increase the dimensions.

    Assembling a pitched roof for a garage

    Before purchasing materials, it is necessary to accurately count everything again, and only after that can you purchase everything necessary for construction. In fact, building a shed roof for your garage is not that difficult.

    You just need to do everything consistently and slowly. It is advisable that you have a drawing of the roof, which will serve as a clear guide to action.

    Roof insulation is also important. Therefore, many do not know how and how to insulate a garage roof? The process of insulating a garage is considered almost the final stage of construction. To insulate a garage, you can use almost any insulation.

    The insulation is placed between rafter beams, and they should fit tightly together. To insulate a lean-to garage, you can use insulation with a thickness of 20 cm.

    Thus, you can do the garage roof repair yourself. At the same time, there is nothing complicated in the construction process. The only difficulty is that in some moments the help of assistants will be required. This is due to the fact that the beams and rafters are long and heavy and they need to be held somewhere, so helpers are needed here.

    If you have any difficulties choosing a roof design, here you can see colorful and illustrated photos of a garage roof. You may like some option.

    Photo of the garage roof

    It’s not difficult to build a simple garage roof with your own hands. But to do this correctly, you need to prepare well in advance. After all, you will have to take into account a number important points– when and why to do insulation, whether a vapor barrier is needed and what to do to eliminate possible leaks. In addition, depending on the condition and location of the building, the construction strategy will differ significantly.

    What should you think about before installing a roof?

    The first thing you need to decide is the purpose of the garage. If it is unheated and will be used only for storing the car, the roof can be anything as long as it does not leak. But if the garage is planned to be warm or will be warmed up from time to time, used as a workshop or a local “café for car enthusiasts”, the roof must be insulated!
    Uninsulated metal roof will condense, providing an unforgettable indoor rain experience in winter. A wooden or concrete one will heat up, melting the snow outside. And this is fraught with ice stalactites and stalagmites, which will have to be knocked down regularly. And it’s good if the roof slope is on the back wall, and not in front of the gate.

    If you have a hood, it is also better to insulate it and raise it above the roof - so as not to drown the same snow.

    Do not forget about the minimum slope with the obligatory drainage for a flat roof. Otherwise, rain and snow may linger in uneven areas, which cannot be avoided when self-construction. And this is fraught with possible leaks or destruction of the roof in a few years.

    And, of course, it is better to correctly assess your strengths in advance and draw up an estimate. Since sometimes the cheap option is not suitable due to its complexity in the device with my own hands, and expensive material can be replaced with something cheaper. After all, a garage does not require a special margin of safety and high environmental friendliness of the roof.

    Do-it-yourself concrete roof for a garage

    The simplest option is to lay concrete slabs. But you can’t do it without a crane. If its use is impossible for some reason, you will have to do concrete screed on one's own.
    For this you will need:

    Among the tools you should think about in advance:

    It greatly simplifies working with concrete, especially if your hand is not yet full, as is clearly shown in the video:

    Pouring a concrete garage roof

    So, all the materials are stored, the tools are ready and you can start building the roof. For this:

    1. Floor beams - pipes, channels or I-beams - are laid on the walls. In the first two options, the roof will be poured on top. If the beams are made of an I-beam, boards or metal sheets are laid on its lower edge, onto which concrete will be poured. When installing an insulated roof, foam plastic can be laid under the screed.
    2. The reinforcing mesh is knitted. It is important not to forget that the rods should not touch the formwork, because then rust may begin to appear at the ends. But reinforcement can be welded to the floor beams. The advantage of I-beams is the ability to fill “layer by layer” - one row at a time. This is especially important when pouring it yourself, since it’s definitely not possible to do the entire roof at once.
    3. The formwork is fixed. To make it easier to tear it off from the concrete, the inner walls must be coated with used machine oil or any other cheap oil. The boards should fit as tightly as possible! Concrete “milk” coming through the cracks significantly worsens the quality of the monolithic floor.
    4. The reinforced mesh is poured with concrete mixture, be sure to be bayoneted and smoothed according to the rule. If possible, order ready-made concrete mixture To fill the entire roof at once, you must have at least two assistants to level the mixture with shovels. It’s better to use a deep vibrator when pouring like this, which will help quickly remove air from the mixture.
    5. The concrete screed is covered with plastic film and must be watered regularly. Without watering, concrete will not gain the necessary strength.
    6. After the screed has set, all cracks must be closed. This is done by ironing - it crumbles onto the surface thin layer cement and rubbed in with a regular paint brush. The procedure continues until all cracks are sealed.
    7. All joints in the screed are coated with mastic reinforced with serpyanka. The same applies to the exit point of the ventilation pipe and the upper ribs of the channels.
    8. To ensure the required level of water resistance, a built-up waterproofing layer is laid on top of the concrete. Be sure to cover the ends of the concrete floor! To do this, the concrete is coated with a primer, and the waterproofing itself is spread in two layers - for reliability. To ensure that the waterproofing does not lag behind, the edges can be pressed with aluminum strips. The dowels are filled with bitumen, and the planks themselves are coated with the same sickle-reinforced mastic.

    But what to do if you inherited a garage? And along with the building, the new owner also received associated problems in the form of a leaking roof and crumbling concrete floor? In this case, restoring the roof will not be much simpler than pouring a new one:

    You can also restore a leaking roof by making a ceiling of corrugated board or slate on top. To do this, without removing the old roof covering, logs are laid and secured with anchors. The joints around the perimeter are sealed with polyurethane foam - for sealing and so that the wind does not lift the entire ceiling.

    The sheathing is fixed to the joists. If the metal is thin, then it is advisable to do the lathing frequently. Edges are protected metal corners, preventing moisture from leaking from below. After the roofing has been laid, a wind strip must be installed.

    It is also called end - it protects the ends of the roof from water entering from above.

    A very accessible description of the restoration of a garage roof using corrugated sheets is shown in the video:

    DIY wooden garage roof

    If concrete work seems complex and time-consuming, the garage roof can be made of wood. More precisely, the rafter system will be wooden, but the roofing itself can be anything from metal to ceramic.

    Shed garage roof

    This is the simplest option that does not require serious calculations and special construction skills. The only thing that will have to be taken into account when separately standing garage– prevailing wind direction. The lower edge of a pitched roof should be on the windward side - that is, on the side from which the wind most often blows. Otherwise, strong gusts can simply tear off the roof.

    Such a roof is extremely simple to erect:

    1. A support board is attached to the wall of the house above the level of the garage wall. With a purlin width of up to 4.5 meters, the rafters will only be placed on the support board and the garage wall. If the width of the garage is planned to be up to 6 m, you will also have to attach a support at the same level with the wall of the garage, on which the rafter leg will rest, providing support for the long rafter.
    2. If the walls of the garage are brick or concrete, a mauerlat made of 15x10 cm or 15x15 cm timber is attached along the upper edge. It provides the necessary strength to the entire roof structure, redistributing the load on the wall. To prevent the wood from rotting, the timber must be treated with an antiseptic and several layers of waterproofing placed under it.
    3. The rafters are attached to the mauerlat either with an outlet beyond the wall or without an outlet. You can calculate the length of the rafters and the angle of inclination using the table.
    4. The waterproofing is laid directly on the rafters. It is fixed on top with counter-lattice bars, on which the lathing is then placed. The waterproofing is laid with an overlap; the overlaps are taped with butyl rubber tape. You can also place tape under the counter-lattice as a seal to seal the puncture sites.
    5. Depending on the chosen roofing covering and the angle of inclination, the sheathing can be either continuous or sparse. This should be taken into account, otherwise the roof may simply fail under critical loads.

    Gable roof garage

    This option for a DIY device is much more complicated and requires serious calculations. Yes, and more material will also be required. For example, insufficient thickness of rafters can lead to sagging of the roof, resulting in stagnation of snow and bursting rafters due to weight. And even with required thickness a large number of knots in a timber can lead to the same results. But such a garage looks presentable, and the space under the roof can be used for storing household equipment.

    The principle of a gable roof:

    1. It is important to decide on the height of the roof - if the roof is too high, the wind will try to topple it, and if it is too low, it can lift it up.
    2. The rafter system is assembled - triangles consisting of rafter legs and tie rods. For garages more than 6 meters wide, more a complex system using crossbars or headstocks.
    3. You can either collect individual elements on the ground, lifting them as needed, or immediately on the walls. The first option is more suitable for garages, since the ceiling does not spread and in this case it is extremely inconvenient to walk along the edges of the walls.
    4. First, the outer rafters are installed at the ends of the garage. Between them in the very top point a cord is pulled that determines the level of the roof. After this, you can attach all the other rafter legs. They are fixed with temporary jibs.
    5. The ridge girder is attached last. To prevent the rafters from moving, they are secured using the cutting method. Also, to simplify the work, the ridge beam can be fixed with construction angles without cutting out the corners.
    6. The waterproofing is rolled out and fixed with a batten along the rafters. If you use a waterproofing membrane, it can act as a temporary roof for two to three months, depending on the manufacturer. You need to pay attention to ultraviolet resistance, otherwise the waterproofing can quickly become unusable, simply starting to crumble.
    7. The sheathing is being filled. The frequency depends on the roof covering. It is better to do it more often than to repair the roof urgently if the roof cannot withstand the pressure of snow.

    Regardless of the chosen roofing covering, special attention should be paid to the ridge unit. A poorly made ridge is a guarantee of a leaking roof and the formation of condensation, since the ridge serves as ventilation for the roofing pie.

    For example, for a metal tile roof, the distance between the sheathing in the ridge assembly should be no less than 3 cm and no more than 5 cm. And the waterproofing should be located on the roof slopes at a distance of 20 cm. The ridge itself is laid on a breathable insulation and fastened with self-tapping screws.

    For ventilated roof ridge with soft roof can be used as ready-made solutions in the form of a ridge aerator, or make the structure yourself. The first method is much simpler, but significantly increases the cost of construction.

    The second option will require a little more effort, but will save you money. Construction of a ventilated ridge with your own hands begins with cutting a ventilation gap in continuous lathing. Next, 5x5 cm bars are attached above the ventilated hole, on which the OSB sheets are laid. To protect the roofing pie from dust and insects, you can also attach a metal mesh that is wrapped around the bars.

    conclusions

    To summarize, we can draw the following conclusions when building a garage roof with your own hands:

    • it is better to restore a concrete garage roof using corrugated sheeting - it is easier and cheaper;
    • concrete work must be carried out with an assistant, otherwise the roof will have to be poured in parts and the joints sealed;
    • roof insulation is a must for protection against condensation;
    • for a concrete roof, built-up waterproofing is used according to concrete floor, for wooden – windproof membrane, preventing the formation of condensation;
    • the thickness of the rafters must be sufficient to withstand the maximum snow load if the roof slope is small, it is better to do it with a margin of safety;
    • if you choose corrugated sheeting as the cheapest option, you should pay close attention to the quality of the decorative coating - unscrupulous manufacturers may peel it off within a year;
