How to get rid of weeds in a folk garden. How to sow the plot so that weeds do not grow? Folk ways to combat weeds

The main job of a gardener in the summer is weeding. Uncultivated plants fill every secluded corner of the garden space, take up all free time, inhibit the growth of vegetables and fruits. Weed control products will distract from routine work, help clear the grass and allow you to enjoy your summer vacation.

Weed is an unwanted grass in the country that competes with cultivated plants. Of the 250,000 species of flora, 3% are wild-growing dominants. Their common features:

  • abundant seed productivity;
  • rapid spread;
  • long term survival.

Unwanted greens reduce yields by competing for water, light, food, and space. Some produce chemicals that are toxic to garden crops, animals and humans. There are three types of common weeds in terms of activity characteristics:

  1. Annuals: shepherd's purse, bindweed, wood lice. Grow and spread by seed. They have an average life expectancy of 1 year. Winter species gain strength in spring, summer species are active throughout the season, disappear with the arrival of cold weather.
  2. Biennials: henbane, thistle, burdock, sweet clover. In the first year, they form rosettes, in the second, flowers and seeds.
  3. Perennials: dandelions, plantain, purple wormwood, wheatgrass. They grow every year. They have a powerful root system and are difficult to remove.

In addition to the type of seasonality, weeds belong to one of two families: broadleaf (dicotyledonous) or narrow-leaved.

In the thickets of weeds, most pests and pathogens find refuge.

Mechanical methods of struggle

Physical methods of weed control involve their removal, damage; they kill harmful plants, causing direct fatal injury. They can be selective and non-selective. Modern tools will help remove weeds.

Weeding and digging

Removal by uprooting is used to destroy shrubs, tree seedlings and grass. Annual and cuttings weeds are susceptible to being pulled out. Many species germinate from root segments left in the soil after they have been weeded out. The effectiveness depends on the removal of the underground part. The first weeding is carried out before planting vegetables.

Low-growing weeds are best removed by hand. In order to clear the garden of large plants, you will need special tools:

  • cultivators;
  • removers;
  • hoes;
  • root claws.

Digging involves turning the soil over. Small areas are cultivated with hand-held rotary cultivators. This method cleans the summer cottage of weeds, the vegetative organs of which are damaged and dry out. Weed removal is carried out until the seed bank is depleted.

To control mature perennial weeds, re-digging is necessary.

Mulching

This is an easy and inexpensive way to control weeds in your garden. Mulch is a layer of material that spreads on the ground. It removes weeds by blocking light and providing a physical barrier to germination. Mulching is successfully applied to most annual weeds.

The material used can be of two types:

  1. organic, made from plant by-products: pine straw, wood chips, green waste, compost, leaves and grass clippings;
  2. synthetic - ground covering fabric made of polyethylene, polypropylene or polyester.

The effectiveness of the procedure depends on the farmer's ability to correctly combine organic and synthetic materials with each other.

Mowing

This weed control method prevents and reduces the seed population and restricts the growth of weeds. The procedure is most effective before flowering, although each herb has its own timing. Some species, after mowing, accelerate their growth and are able to germinate from the stem and root segment. It is impossible to completely remove the weeds by mowing, so farmers combine it with the use of herbicide preparations for weeds and burning of residues.

Solarization

This is the name given to covering an overgrown area with a layer of transparent or black plastic, which captures the thermal energy of the sun and raises the temperature of the soil. Weed seeds and vegetative shoots die. The method is used in the summer months. Black plastic excludes light, transparent plastic produces higher temperatures.

Burning

If a lot of unwanted vegetation has grown on the site, you should heed the advice of experienced summer residents: fire is the best way to control weeds. The flame causes the cell walls to burst. Burning removes weeds by killing dry, ripe plant matter and new shoots. Seeds buried in this place also die when burned. For areas overgrown with weeds, this is the right choice.

A propane burner is a good tool for killing weeds along fences and paved areas.

How to get rid of with chemicals

The use of professional tools is a reliable protection of the garden from weeds. The following factors should be considered when choosing chemicals:

  • safety for cultivated plants: most of the products have long-term residual activity in the soil;
  • recommended water intake;
  • seasonality of use - most thoroughly need to be processed in spring or summer;
  • soil requirements.

Using pesticides will keep weeds out of the garden forever if you alternate herbicides to prevent the weeds from developing resistance.

Herbicides

The chemicals kill weeds or alter their normal growth. The drugs are divided into the following groups:

  1. Selective. They eliminate weeds in a targeted manner, without damaging cultivated plants.
  2. Non-selective. Destroy all vegetation.
  3. Presowing. Apply before weeds appear. They are used to combat annual species.
  4. Postemergence. Get rid of the grass that has already emerged from the soil. They are of a contact or systemic nature. They affect only the treated parts of plants, not covering the entire area. They work effectively against perennial weeds.

Herbicides can be applied to foliage or soil. Post-emergence means make foliar top dressing, pre-sowing species are applied to the ground. The preparations are absorbed by the foliage and should not be washed off by rain or irrigation. Soil herbicides are produced in the form of liquids or granules, used according to the instructions, with the use of personal protective equipment.

Lapis lazuli

The toxic chemical is a systemic herbicide. Protects potatoes, tomatoes, wheat, corn and soybeans from cereals and annual weeds. The advantages of the drug include the following properties:

  • duration of protection;
  • intense activity;
  • action through roots and leaves;
  • application time: before and after sowing crops;
  • the ability to make point-by-point.

Lapis lazuli is absorbed into the roots, moving acropetally through the plant. The exposure period is 10-12 days, the protection period is 1-2 months.

On sandy soils with a low, less than 1%, humus content, this herbicide is not used.

Roundup

This non-selective herbicide is most effective in all conditions. The main advantages of the tool:

  • the possibility of sowing any crops in 1-3 days after use;
  • spraying 1 hour before the expected rain and regardless of the presence of dew;
  • high speed of movement over the plant;
  • impact efficiency regardless of the air temperature after spraying (from +2 ° С to +30 ° С).

Roundup is a poison for all weeds, so it is actively used to cultivate agricultural fields. The time of death depends on the size of unwanted plants and weather conditions: yellowing occurs in 6-12 days. Leads to complete drying out.

The herbicide does not affect weed seeds in the ground. You need to wait until they germinate and reach the stage of three or four true leaves.

Tornado

A broad-spectrum herbicide with a high content of active substance, an irreplaceable assistant in the fight against weeds.

Useful properties of the drug:

  1. a decrease in the consumption rate due to an increase in the amount of the active composition;
  2. destruction of almost all types of weeds;
  3. the use of various cultures as a desiccant;
  4. safety in application before sowing.

The herbicide penetrates the foliage, spreading to all parts of the weeds. Destroys the root system. Prevents the exchange of aromatic amino acids. It affects growth points, leading to death. Visual symptoms of herbicide exposure in the form of dryness become visible 5-7 days after spraying. After 3-4 weeks from the moment of processing, the grass completely disappears.

Nitrogen fertilizers promote good yields, but promote unwanted grass growth.

Hurricane

The non-selective poison, which provides long-term residual control inside the weed, is effective against perennials. It is used with caution: spraying the herbicide can cause serious harm to garden crops due to the ingress of powder or solution of the drug on them. The toxic chemical is used in early spring or during weed activity.

List of Controlled Weeds:

  • annual amaranth;
  • fern, thistle;
  • nettles, greaves;
  • mayweed;
  • wild parsley;
  • purslane, dandelion;
  • white clover, bindweed;
  • sheep sorrel, wild radish.

Glyphos

A broad-spectrum herbicide is used in clearing an area from annual and perennial weeds and grasses. First, it penetrates the leaves, then descending through the trunk to the root within 10-15 days.

The advantages of the tool include:

  1. safety for animals, people and the environment due to low toxicity;
  2. maximum destruction of cereal and dicotyledonous weeds - both aboveground and underground parts;
  3. application according to the recommendations for cleansing from vegetative weeds throughout the season;
  4. saving time, money and labor.

Works more efficiently in warm weather. The effect of the herbicide is manifested 3-5 days after treatment: the weeds turn yellow, dry up and die off. The timing depends on the weather conditions and the type of grass.

The drug has no soil activity, allows you to quickly plan and carry out sowing work within 8-10 days after application.

Ammonium nitrate

An effective natural herbicide, the use of which leads to the complete destruction of weeds. Spray with a 15% solution: a bucket of water will require 3 kg of nitrate. Compliance with the proportion is mandatory. After treatment, the natural herbicide is eroded in the form of ammonia. The substances remaining in the ground will become a good fertilizing for the garden.

Precautionary measures

The use of weed control chemistry assumes compliance with the following rules:

  1. Do not process on windy days to avoid spillage on garden crops.
  2. Keep spray head close to the ground.
  3. Remember that herbicides take 6 hours to dry.
  4. Spraying should be carried out in dry weather, preferably a day before the onset of rain.
  5. In case of light rain, add soapy water to keep the chemicals on the leaves.
  6. Do not work with unprotected hands.

In the process of weed control, it is possible to get herbicides on vegetables and fruits. Wash them thoroughly before eating.

Folk methods

Natural remedies alone cannot control weeds, but help in reducing weeds. Traditional methods are available, easy to use, and safe. They can be made with homemade supplies.

Salt

Violates the internal water balance of plant cells. Used for small scale horticulture where it dissolves easily by rain or watering. Salt is diluted with water in a ratio of 1: 3, adding a little liquid soap to the weed solution. The recipe is used with caution, the mixture should not fall on garden crops.

Vinegar

A natural non-selective herbicide, the only significant drawback of which is the lack of a residual effect: the weeds return.

Processing stages:

  1. pour 4 liters of vinegar 5% into a bucket of water;
  2. pour in 1 glass of table salt;
  3. add a tablespoon of liquid dish soap;
  4. spray the weeds with the resulting solution on a dry sunny day.

Weeds will die in a few days. The prepared mixture of vinegar and salt is stored in the refrigerator. Concentration can be increased.

Acetic acid cannot be used in its pure form.

Soda

The processing method is as follows:

  • moisten the weeds with water;
  • measure out 1 tsp. baking soda and sprinkle evenly over the foliage;
  • repeat with all cultivated plants.

The procedure is carried out with an interval of 4-6 weeks. It is necessary to use baking soda during the period of active growth of weeds.

Herbicidal soap

This is the name of a mixture prepared from the following ingredients: salt, 5% vinegar and grated laundry soap in equal parts. If the herbicide is too thick, dilute it with vinegar or liquid soap and water.

Hot water

Boiling water is poured over unwanted plants to burn them. It works especially well for weeds growing in cracked sidewalk. Spreading over the tiles, the water will cool down and will not harm other crops.

Before processing the site, all the proposed products are tested on several plants.

Prophylaxis

Weed control measures are aimed at shading and displacing young seedlings by obtaining dense turf.

These are:

  1. creation of lawns;
  2. soil testing at the PH;
  3. correct mowing;
  4. rare watering;
  5. timely fertilization - strong garden crops prevent the emergence of grass in the beds.

Compliance with all the rules of care will help keep the garden weed-free.

The word "weed" is familiar to most summer residents to the pain (in the lower back, tired of endless). And of course, I want to get rid of these "enemies" forever. Moreover, it is desirable - without unnecessary work. Well, let's look for ways ...

The handsome dandelion is a vicious weed. Photo

I must say right away: my list does not claim to be exhaustive. Moreover, the methods of dealing with it collected in it are very different - some of them are "lazy", and there are those that will require efforts. Some methods have many opponents. But my deepest conviction is that in order to choose, you need to know. You cannot blindly rely on someone else's opinion and someone else's experience - you should look for and select what is right for you and works best for you.

Therefore, I invite everyone to discuss: share your experience, confirm or deny the effectiveness of the described methods and methods, supplement and expand my list!

Method 1 - traditional

Today, many argue with the fact that the soil needs to be dug. We will not argue - this is not what we are talking about now, not about the methods of cultivating the land. For those who are interested in this issue, I recommend reading the article ... and numerous comments to it. And to combat perennial rhizome weeds, digging and plowing remains one of the most effective methods.

Yes, this is a rather laborious process, and it has its drawbacks. But here, let's say, I have a plot on which two years ago nothing grew except, and. How to quickly reclaim the land from them without digging, if its entire upper layer consists entirely of the same roots? I have not yet found the answer to this question. Therefore, I dig, carefully selecting the roots by hand.

Digging is a way to control weeds. Photo

There exist different variants... For example, to dig not with a shovel, but with a pitchfork - so there is much less chance of damaging the rhizome, cutting it into pieces, from which new weeds will later grow.

You can plow the virgin soil with a walk-behind tractor or a tractor (if any). In this case, it will be more difficult to choose the roots, but from experience I will say: such treatment helps literally in a year or two get rid of wormwood, burdock and similar plants with a very powerful and deep root system - you will struggle to uproot them with a shovel.

Method 2 - chemical

I myself do not like this method and never use it. But it is possible that for some situations it turns out to be the only acceptable one, although in the garden I would not recommend using it under any conditions - the poison, which herbicides are, it is poison. In addition, these drugs have practically no effect on some plants (for example, the same one).

Sosnovsky's hogweed is a weed that is even resistant to herbicides. Photo

They say, however, that a new generation of herbicide has appeared - Agrokiller, capable of destroying even such "monsters". But I am always tormented by the question: what will happen to the soil, into which the drug will get? with insects or other living things that might accidentally stumble upon a treated plant? ..

If you want to learn more about the chemical method of weed control, our publications will help you understand this difficult issue: And armed with knowledge, you can look into our catalog, which includes the proposals of many large garden online stores, to.

However, the choice of material for mulching the soil should be taken very carefully. So, under the black film, the earth can overheat; Roofing material is capable of releasing resins, the harmlessness of which is in question, and so on. It is important to understand and take into account such nuances.

A good alternative to synthetic shelter is organic mulch. Only you need to pour it in a thick layer (5-10 cm minimum). Both mowed grass and tree bark are suitable - we have already talked about different types of mulch, more details about its use are described in articles and. And in the next video, you will see how you can combine materials: in this case, it is cardboard plus tree bark.

Method 4 - substitute

Where do weeds appear? That's right - where there is free, empty land. On the soil occupied by plantings, there are usually few weeds, and these are often annuals, which are much easier to cope with. What conclusion follows from this? There should be no empty spaces!

In part, the problem is solved by mulch, which was mentioned a little above. But there are other options as well. For example: a garden bed is vacated after early greenery or harvesting onions - we sow it or carry out fast-growing vegetables.

Phacelia is an excellent green manure and weed killer. Photo

Tight fit is also a solution to the problem. Of course, it is necessary to compact it wisely, so that the plants are not cramped, and the harvest does not suffer. But with the right approach, you can get beautiful beds and get rid of weeds - they simply have nowhere to grow.

You will find the details of this method and its visual demonstration in our publication.

And you can find green manure seeds for improving the soil and controlling weeds in our catalog, which contains the proposals of large garden online stores.

In my old dacha, using this method, I managed to significantly reduce the number of sleepyheads. She regularly cut off its shoots by hand (it was not possible to use the tool - the weed lived in the viburnum thickets) and used the plucked grass as mulch. Perhaps two more years - and the despair would have been over ... But I left, and the experiment was interrupted. But with the cow parsnip, already mentioned in this article, it is completely useless to fight with such a method - it grows back even after repeated mowing.

For those species that can be depleted by mowing, the most important thing is not to touch the roots. Therefore, it is advisable to use either a sickle - a hoe (hoe) will be less convenient here.

But in our catalog, among the offers of various online stores, there are all types of tools, and you can choose the one that suits you best.

Method 8 - preventive

Often we sow weeds in the beds with our own hands. This happens if you use fresh

Weed control allows you to quickly remove weeds from the beds and provide all the growth opportunities for cultivated plantings. There are many chemical and folk methods to destroy weeds, it is worth learning the best of them.

How to deal with weeds in the garden

In any garden, in addition to vegetables and berry crops, weeds are actively growing - wild plants that take away water, nutrients and even sunlight from cultivated plantings. Weeds that have appeared must be destroyed. If you do not pay attention to them, then in a very short time a vegetable garden can overgrow, and it will no longer be possible to get a harvest.

In general, methods for killing weeds can be divided into 2 categories:

  1. Chemical method. Cultural plantings or the soil prepared for them are treated with special solutions that prevent the growth of weeds. The method is good in that weeds on the site after treatment with herbicides do not appear in principle. However, chemistry for weeds has a minus, most often only "empty" land can be treated with chemicals, in which vegetables and other crops have not yet been planted.
  2. Mechanical method. In this case, weed control is reduced mainly to weeding the soil - harmful plants that have emerged from the ground are uprooted, not allowing them to grow. The method is very reliable and allows you to destroy existing weeds, but requires significant and constant efforts, since the weed grows again quickly and in large quantities.

You can also destroy weeds for a long time by mulching and covering the beds. The greatest effect can be achieved with a combination of all the listed means, in which case the struggle turns out to be purposeful and truly effective.

The best chemicals for weed control

The most popular among summer residents are modern chemical preparations for the destruction of grass and weeds, the so-called herbicides. It is usually necessary to cultivate the site even before planting cultivated plants, but subsequently the fight against weeds is reduced to a minimum. Herbicides are well suited for the treatment of very large or heavily overgrown vegetable gardens; it is simply irrational to be limited to weeding alone here.

Lapis lazuli

The drug called "Lazurite" is excellent for destroying weeds in areas where you plan to plant nightshades - potatoes, tomatoes or peppers.

A remedy against weeds in the garden effectively acts on cereals and dicotyledonous annuals, and it can be used even if nightshade crops are already growing in the beds. "Lazurite" will help to destroy weeds, but will not harm potatoes and tomatoes.

To remove weeds from the garden, it is recommended to treat the beds with Lazurit twice - before planting the seeds and one month after the emergence of shoots. Usually, the package of the product is diluted in 1 liter of water, after stirring, another 5 liters of liquid is poured and the soil is sprayed with the solution.

Tornado

The main active ingredient of the herbicide is isopropylamine salt. When it gets on the aerial parts and roots of weeds, the substance blocks the life processes of the grass and leads to its death. Weed killer, diluted in a ratio of 25 ml per 1 liter of water, helps to destroy more than 150 species of pest plants and copes not only with annuals and perennials, but even with shrubs. Annual weeds die just 5 days after spraying according to instructions, and shrubs die off after about a month.

Attention! A tornado belongs to continuous-action preparations - this means that it is necessary to cultivate the land from weeds with a chemical solution before planting cultivated plants. Otherwise, the agent can destroy both weeds and cultivated seedlings.

Hurricane Forte

A product called "Hurricane Forte" helps to destroy perennial and annual weeds, even in heavily overgrown areas. A solution for killing weeds, which contains potassium salt, is diluted in 10 liters of water in an amount of 30 ml and sprayed over the entire area. Weeds disappear completely in 2-3 weeks, and re-cultivation in the current season is usually no longer required.

Hurricane Forte is a solid agent, but the drug has a destructive effect on the roots, stems and leaves of plants. For cultivated seeds embedded in the soil, the agent is completely harmless, the main thing is to process the site before the first shoots appear from the ground.

Roundup

Roundup is considered to be one of the best remedies for weeds and grass forever. It contains glyphosate, or isopropylamine salt, when sprayed over the site at a concentration of 60-120 ml per bucket of water, it penetrates the leaves and shoots of wild weeds. Vital processes in plant tissues are blocked, and weeds die en masse within 10 days after treatment.

The benefits of Roundup are soil-friendliness and pet-friendly. It is best to destroy weeds in the garden using a chemical method in early spring, while there are still no shoots in the beds. When using a weed control agent in the subsequent period, it is recommended to cover the cultivated plants with an impenetrable material.

Saltpeter

A very affordable and effective weed killer is common ammonium nitrate. It is beneficial to use it not only because saltpeter burns out the vast majority of pest plants. The advantage also lies in the fact that the substance settles in the soil and then acts on the cultivated plantings already as fertilizer. Nitrogenous substances in the composition of ammonium nitrate are especially useful for garden plants in early spring, they contribute to the rapid development of seedlings.

To destroy weeds in the garden forever or for a very long time, a very powerful concentration of nitrate is used - about 3 kg of substance per bucket of water. It is possible to process the site with such a solution only before planting the seeds. But just a few days after treatment, the bulk of the saltpeter will simply evaporate into the atmosphere, and the amount of nitrogen that is safe for plants will remain in the soil.

Weeding and digging

Even the most thorough treatment of the site with chemicals does not always help to completely destroy the weed. Many herbicide preparations act on the terrestrial parts of the weeds, but the roots and seeds of the weeds can survive.

Throughout the growing season, cultivated beds are recommended to be carefully inspected. The soil at the roots of cultivated plants and between the rows is weeded, loosened and dug up at least once a month. Loosening the earth does not allow the weeds to take root and grow properly. Unwanted seedlings can be destroyed at a very early stage.

Mulching

Another effective agronomic method for removing weeds from the garden is mulching. The land in the immediate vicinity of the roots of cultivated plants is covered with a dense layer of mulch - sand, peat, sawdust, wood chips.

Mulching does not harm the plantings themselves, provided that seedlings have already appeared in the garden, and even more so it cannot destroy them. On the contrary, the mulch layer is very useful - it prevents moisture from the soil from evaporating too quickly. But weeds cannot germinate through the mulching layer, they do not receive the light and oxygen necessary for development, and die even at the stage of development underground.

Covering material and black film

You can fight weeds in your summer cottage with the help of a covering material, which is spread over the beds. In the horticultural market, lutrasil and spunbond, agrotex and agrospan are in great demand. A black opaque film is also often used to cover plantings. Any of the listed materials can be used for several years in a row and not think about the problem of weeds.

Covering material acts in much the same way as mulch - it blocks the access of sunlight and oxygen to the weeds, thereby helping to destroy them. At the same time, ordinary garden plants germinate through special holes made in the covering material or film.

Peculiarities:

  1. Covering materials of non-woven type usually allow water to pass through, you can water the beds directly through them.
  2. The black film is impervious to water, and when watering, it must be lifted or filled with water exactly next to the stems of the plants.
  3. However, for plantings covered with a film, watering itself is required much less often - the liquid evaporates more slowly from the soil, condensation forms on the inner surface of the film, which returns to the ground.

Black cover materials help to raise the temperature of the topsoil. This is also useful for cultivated plants - plantings suffer less from sudden cold snaps and bring more abundant harvests. Vegetables and berries during ripening do not get dirty in moist soil, but lie on a clean film, and it is much more convenient to pick them.

Important! Although sheeting and other covering materials can help kill weeds, the disadvantage is that fertilizing the beds becomes more difficult. And for digging and loosening the soil, it is completely required to remove the material. But at the same time, in principle, it is required less often to apply fertilizing for plants under a film or agrofibre.

Folk remedies for weeds on the site

You can also destroy harmful plants using folk methods - over the years of use, they have proven their effectiveness. True, it is difficult to cultivate large plots of land with folk remedies for weeds at home, since a lot of raw materials for the preparation of solutions will be needed. But in a modest garden, they can show good results.

Salt and vinegar

A homemade herbicide solution, consisting of two ingredients - vinegar and salt, helps to destroy weeds in the garden. Prepare it in this way:

  • 2 large tablespoons of salt are diluted in 1 liter of water;
  • add 5 large tablespoons of vinegar;
  • the solution is heated to a hot state and the soil is treated, making sure that the mixture does not get on the cultivated plants.

The folk remedy is safe enough for vegetables and other crops. However, the soil after vinegar will become very acidic, so it will need to be fertilized with wood ash.

Soda and laundry soap

Another method suggests making weed poison at home from laundry soap and baking soda. In a bucket of water, you need to dissolve 1 handful of soda powder and a grated bar of soap, and then stir thoroughly until completely dissolved.

The weeds are purposefully watered with the resulting product - an alkaline solution helps to reliably destroy weeds. However, it is impossible to plant garden plants on this site during the season, and if weeds are destroyed at a distance from vegetable crops, then you need to ensure that the gap is at least 20 cm.

Alcohol solution

Alcohol gives a good effect when treating areas overgrown with weeds. The product is diluted with water in a ratio of 1 to 10 and the earth is carefully spilled. Moreover, in order to destroy weeds on just 2 acres of land, you will need to spend a total of 11 liters of alcohol.

But the advantage of this method is that alcohol does not cause long-term damage to the soil. Within a month after processing, vegetables and berries can be planted on the site.

Salt

Salt is one of the most effective folk remedies for weed control and has been used for decades. Salt is used in two ways:

  • diluted in water at the rate of 1 kg per 10 liters;
  • sprinkle the soil with salt powder in a volume of 150 g per meter of space.

Weeds do not tolerate exposure to salt and die very quickly, and then do not reappear for a long time. However, a significant disadvantage of the product is that it will not be possible to plant vegetables on the soil treated with salt for a very long time.

If you want to destroy the weeds with salt without harming the vegetables, you can dilute the product with water in a ratio of 3 to 1 and water the ground exactly where the weeds grow, but not close to the garden crops.

Boiling water

Simple boiling water has a detrimental effect on germinating weeds. Scalding helps to quickly destroy harmful weeds. This remedy should not be used only when the weeds grow close to vegetables. The roots are too close, hot water can destroy them too.

Conclusion

The remedy for weeds in agriculture is not presented in the only version. You can get rid of weeds both with herbicides and folk remedies or with the correct agrotechnical methods.

Any summer resident will call the weed grass one of the most annoying pests on the site and everyone is looking for a way to get rid of the weeds.

However, there is no way to get rid of these unpretentious plants that fill everything in their path. Weeds grow very actively, having a detrimental effect on garden crops.

In addition, they spoil the appearance of the site, making it untidy and unkempt. Weed grass attracts the attention of many harmful insects. Without applying measures to combat the plant, you risk losing the entire crop.

In this article, we will discuss a wide variety of ways to get rid of weed grass.

How to get rid of weeds and grass - using special preparations

Before starting to talk about the methods of combating weed grass, it must be said that it is impossible to get rid of it forever. Weeds spread with the help of seeds and wind; they have no special requirements for the place of germination.

Therefore, it is unlikely that you will be able to protect your site from this scourge forever. But still, change the situation for the better, perhaps, let's figure out how.

One of the most common weed control methods is the use of herbicides. This method will have a strong impact on the plant and bring results. But there are a number of contraindications that need to be studied before use.

The preparations differ in the spectrum of action, each remedy for a specific weed plant.

On the shelves of supermarkets, you will find a huge selection of drugs, which are divided according to some criteria.

1. By the ability to spread over the weed plant.

Systemic.

Preparations of this group, being on a weed, have a completely destructive effect on the entire plant. A special substance contributes to the destruction of the outer part and the root system.

After using such a drug, the weed plant completely dies.

Contact.

This group of drugs has its effect only at the points of contact with the plant.

2. By the spectrum of action.

Continuous exposure range.

Such drugs have a detrimental effect on absolutely all plants in the treated area. This method is suitable when the land needs to be completely cleared of grass and crops.

The most popular of these herbicides are Tornado or Antiburyan.

This procedure is usually carried out before the installation of sidewalk paths or other structures on the site.

Narrow range of exposure.

They have a detrimental effect only on the weed grass, leaving the crops planted nearby in safety. The solution for treatment can be prepared in various concentrations, depending on the degree of weed growth on the site.

Of these herbicides, the popular are "Hurricane" or "".

Before buying, carefully study the range of effects of the drug and its concentration. Look for a product that will help you deal with your weeds.

The drug "Agrokiller" has a rather powerful effect, therefore it is even used for removing shrubs and trees.

Also, drugs differ in the mechanism of action on the plant. Some destroy weeds at the cellular level, while others disrupt the process of photosynthesis. The release form can also be presented in the form of powder, gel, solution, tablets.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages of this method are pretty clear:

- the process is quite fast and simple;

- excellent result even with abundant weed grass;

- you can treat the entire area with one tool at once;

- a wide range of drugs in specialized supermarkets;

- after 10 - 14 days there will be no traces of processing.

Disadvantages of this method:

- some funds can have a detrimental effect on the planted crops;

- do not affect the seeds of weed grass, so if they are on the site, they will certainly germinate again;

- has a number of contraindications and requires special care in use.

If you need to treat the area several times, use different drugs.

The opinion of professionals

Experts recognize the effectiveness of the use of chemicals against weed grass, but recommend not resorting to their frequent use. It is wise to use this method when processing a large area with potatoes or corn.

And if we are talking about a small garden area, then it is better to use a less aggressive method of getting rid of weed grass.

Do not add chemicals to loose, dug soil. So the product will easily penetrate into the root system of trees and shrubs.

How to get rid of weeds and grass mechanically

In a small garden area, you can manually remove weeds. This method will take more time, and the process will be quite time consuming. The complexity of the work depends directly on the type of plant that has filled your site.

Some of them are easy to pull out together with the root system by hand. In other cases, it is necessary to use additional summer cottage inventory. You can mow the grass, but you will have to repeat this procedure quite often.

- regularly remove weeds, without waiting for the plants to get stronger;

- the fragment of the root system remaining in the ground is able to develop into a new plant;

- Collect the root shoots of the weeds as carefully as possible;

- it is much easier to weed the area after it has rained;

- if you believe in astrology, listen to the lunar calendar.

The way to get rid of weeds with mulching

Covering the topsoil with mulch means covering the surface of the ground with a dense material that has little daylight transmission. To do this, you can use wood chips, dry grass, ash and much more.

This method will help to get rid of the heel plant, including the root system.

Also, the advantage of this method can be called giving the site a neat appearance. The evenly distributed material ennobles the beds, highlighting the crops planted on them.

The disadvantages include the duration of the application of such measures. It will be possible to remove the mulch layer only in the fall.

Organic material will be the best choice for soil mulching.

How to get rid of weeds with folk remedies

People were engaged in the cultivation of crops in their gardens long before the spread of chemicals, so many folk recipes for combating weed grass appeared. Some of them are really very effective and are still in use today.

Edible salt.

It is easy to find in any kitchen, does not require costs and gives very good results after use. You can sprinkle salt on the area where the weed grass grows, or you can spray with a water solution.

This method has one important drawback, after such treatment, the soil is unsuitable for growing crops. However, this method is perfect for treating paths or a plot, for the construction of any kind of garden structure.

Baking soda.

As with the salt method. An excellent tool, you can apply irrigation with a solution of water. But, as in the first case, it will not be possible to grow crops for a long time on the cultivated land.

Ethanol.

The method is quite costly. For processing, it is necessary to prepare a solution in a proportional ratio of alcohol and water 1:10. This method will help preserve crops on the site. The result will delight the summer resident and will last until next season.

Vinegar.

There are a huge variety of recipes with this tool, we will tell you about a few of them.

The first solution must be prepared using six percent vinegar. It will take five glasses of the product to dilute in two liters of water.

And if you use nine percent vinegar, then it is diluted with lemon juice in a proportional ratio of 3: 1.

The most proven method is to prepare a solution with salt, vinegar and hot water.

Soap solution.

Ingredients: a liter of vinegar, table salt, about one hundred grams, a grated bar of soap. Dissolve everything in water and mix well. With this mixture, it is necessary to process the area where the weed grass grows several times.

Burning the weed grass

This method cannot be classified as a gentle measure. It must be used with extreme care and accuracy, so as not to damage useful crops. After you finish treating the area, pour plenty of water over the area.

Use space wisely on the site.

Weed grass quickly spreads over empty areas. Therefore, plan in advance what to plant in the vacant garden bed. Dill or parsley will never become superfluous. And such measures will help protect the land from uninvited guests.

It should be remembered that it is better to mow the grass and remove only the upper part of the plant, so the weed grass will gradually become weaker. If you leave the element of the root system, the weed will grow even thicker and higher.

Shorten the gaps.

In order to fill the voids in the area, plant crops closer to each other. However, here you need to know about the many nuances of such tight landings. The option can be used by experienced summer residents.

Block.

If you have cultivated a certain area of land from weeds, protect it with a depression in the ground or an embankment.

Don't forget the paths.

It is necessary to cultivate the land from weed grass not only in the places where crops grow, but also in the aisles. The seeds will easily move to the cleaned soil again and germinate. For paths, you can apply mulching from organic material.

Freezing of the earth.

Frost will have a detrimental effect on weed grass seeds if you dig deep into the soil before the onset of cold weather.

And as we described in the article, it is unlikely that it will be possible to get rid of the weedy grass forever. Some types of weeds cannot be eradicated in principle. But thanks to the application of the described methods to combat this scourge, you will greatly facilitate your work.

Gradually, the grass will be less and less. By combining several methods, you will achieve excellent results. Experiment and try different weed control products. This way, you will be able to minimize their spread. I wish you a rich harvest!

Weed control takes a lot of gardeners' time and energy. There are folk remedies for eliminating grass in the area, but not all of them are effective and safe.

How to get rid of weeds for good

Weeds interfere with the growth and development of cultivated plants. Many gardeners dream of getting rid of them once and for all, but at the same time they face difficulties.

Mechanical methods

The safest, but at the same time quite time-consuming way of weed control is mechanical removal. The grass must be pulled out in a timely manner with your hands, but it is much more effective to remove them by the roots. The rhizomes remaining in the soil give new growth very quickly.

Experienced gardeners are advised to dig up the beds in the fall and spring with a pitchfork, not a shovel. In this case, the roots of weeds are not damaged, and they can be easily pulled out of the ground. Autumn and spring digging must be supplemented with regular weeding throughout the summer season. Using a hoe will not be able to get rid of deeply buried rhizomes, but repeated cutting of the aerial part of the plants and the upper part of the rhizomes greatly weaken the weed.

To get rid of weeds in a certain area, the earth is dug up and covered with dark agrofibre, which does not let the sun's rays through. This gives the weeds no chance. By making small holes in the agrofibre, you can plant strawberries, strawberries or almost any vegetable crop there.

To protect the beds from weeds, you can dig up the soil and cover it with agrofibre. Weeds will not germinate under a dense dark film

A good effect is given by mulching the soil with sawdust, cut grass, tree bark. It is difficult for weeds to break through from under the mulch layer.

In order for the weeds to grow less, in the fall, you can sow the site with siderates. Mustard, rye perfectly loosen the soil with their rhizomes and suppress the growth of weeds. In the spring, 2 weeks before the start of sowing, all that remains is to dig up the beds.

Folk remedies

Chemical methods of weed control involve the use of herbicides. At the same time, almost all industrially produced drugs are unsafe. Their use negatively affects the condition of the soil. Plus, herbicides aren't cheap. To save money, you can try to remove weeds using folk methods.

Vinegar

Vinegar can kill both weeds and vegetables. It should be used with caution. To prepare a working solution, you need to mix 3 cups of 9% vinegar with 10 liters of water. The specified amount is enough to process 2 acres of land. Spray the soil with the resulting composition in autumn or early spring, when the weeds are just beginning to break through. The solution can be sprayed onto weeds, making sure that it does not get on the cultivated plants.

Vinegar treatment strongly acidifies the soil, therefore, after removing the weeds, it is imperative to sprinkle the beds with ash at the rate of 4 glasses of ash per 1 hundred square meters.

For spot removal of weeds, it is necessary to mix 9% vinegar with lemon juice in a ratio of 3: 1. Pour the resulting solution strictly under the roots of the weed or spray on it. This method is good for dandelion control.

To increase the effectiveness of the solution, you can add detergent to the solution. You need to take 2 cups of vinegar and water, a sachet of citric acid, 30 g of alcohol, 2 tsp. liquid detergent. Mix all this well and spray the area with weeds. It should be borne in mind that the solution kills not only weeds, but also other plants.

Spot application of vinegar solution is possible to control separately growing weeds

Herbicidal soap

You can make herbicidal soap yourself. To do this, mix in equal proportions vinegar 9%, salt, grated soap and water. The mixture is infused for 2 hours, after which they are sprayed with a bed of weeds. After a few days, a piece of land should be dug up, and ash should be added. Treatment with herbicidal soap should be carried out at least 3 weeks before planting seeds or seedlings. Additional application of micronutrients and organic fertilizers to the soil is recommended.

Vinegar and herbicidal soap based on it are slightly inferior in their effectiveness to industrial herbicides, but at the same time they are considered more environmentally friendly and gentle on the soil.

Soda

A baking soda solution can be used to control weeds. 500 g of soda powder is dissolved in 2 liters of water and 1 piece of crushed laundry soap is added. After infusion, the resulting composition is sprayed on areas with weeds. This method is quite effective, but after such treatment, the acid-base balance of the soil is disturbed and it is necessary to acidify it (by adding peat, compost).

In my garden, weeds grow very quickly. I tried almost all the ways to deal with them. But I came to the conclusion that I will no longer use herbicides due to the high toxicity. Folk methods help to remove weeds, but they also harm the soil. I use all these solutions either pointwise or for treating paths, areas on which I do not plan to plant anything in the next couple of years. I fight weeds in the beds using proven methods - I dig, weed and mulch.

What tools should not be used

Several folk remedies for weed control are not recommended due to their potential to harm the soil. To remove weeds, some gardeners spill the soil with a salt solution (1 kg of table salt per 10 liters of water). The specified amount of solution is enough for 1 sq. m of land. Salt destroys weeds, but after such treatment, nothing can be planted on the site for 1-2 years.

The method of weed control involving the use of alcohol is not very effective and harmful. Ethyl alcohol is diluted with water in a ratio of 1: 5 and watered with weeds. It is not recommended to use this method on the beds, as the weed grows quickly, and the soil condition after such watering is very poor.

Burning grass is not only ineffective, but also dangerous, which some gardeners suggest as a method of weed control. In addition, after an arson, the soil microflora is greatly disturbed, and it is not recommended to plant garden crops on such a site for 2 years. Watering the ground with Coca-Cola is not only an expensive but also useless way to control weeds.
