About the book "Three Musketeers" Alexandre Dumas

Surely there is no adult in the world who has not read the book "The Three Musketeers" by Alexandre Dumas. This story is about the brave d'Artagnan and his three friends - Aramis, Porthos and Athos. Most often, this work becomes the first that really takes the soul and instills a real taste for reading.

You can download the book at the bottom of the page in fb2, epub, rtf, txt formats.

The emotions experienced while reading this book are remembered for a lifetime. The Three Musketeers shape the perception of both real fascinating literature and human relationships. You don't have to come back to this work again and again, but all the relationships of the heroes of other books will willy-nilly be compared with what is written in The Three Musketeers.

There is no point in retelling the plot of this book, because most have heard of it. And yet it will not be possible to bypass him - at least in general outline... So, a young Gascon nobleman d'Artagnan appears in Paris in the hope of success and glory. Having met Porthos, Athos and Aramis, d'Artagnan discovers noble, moral and, most importantly, true friends. Since his meeting with Constance Bonacieux, a lady close to Anna of Austria herself, the life of the young Gascon has completely changed. He falls into the epicenter of enmity between Cardinal Richelieu's guards and His Majesty's Musketeers. In addition, d'Artagnan gets involved in political intrigues, on which he and the royal family now depend.

Description of the life of the times of Louis XIII, the customs of the ladies and gentlemen of the court, the play of life and death, honor and dishonor - all this really attracts with its romance. The book "Three Musketeers" captures, immerses the reader in the world of adventure, gives a lot of colorful impressions and emotions. Yes, the intensity of passions here truly makes you empathize, rejoice and grieve along with the heroes.

Alexander Dumas, by the way, is simply a master of unexpected plot twists. He will always be able to present the reader with something that literally gives the skin goosebumps, and this is at the moment when everything is completely calm.

Friendship in The Three Musketeers is just the standard of this feeling. Without sweetness and pretentious excesses - a true friendship, to which each of us should strive. In addition, each musketeer allegedly complements the team: Athos - with his honor, Aramis - with his mind, Porthos - with strength, and, of course, with courage - d'Artagnan.

Love, like everything else in the life of the brave musketeers, is subject to duty. Duty and honor always come first. Nevertheless, Alexandre Dumas shows love as something completely crazy and passionate, albeit without the usual "seasoning" - sweetness.

The Three Musketeers is definitely one of those. It is worth growing up on it, learning about the world and real, noble feelings.

Quotes from the book "The Three Musketeers" Alexandre Dumas

Finally, his honesty was impeccable, and this is in that age when the military so easily entered into a deal with faith and conscience, lovers - with the harsh scrupulousness inherent in our time, and the poor - with the seventh commandment of God. In short, Athos was a very extraordinary person.

But Aramis, although it might seem that he had no secrets, was all shrouded in mystery. Sparingly answering questions concerning others, he carefully bypassed everything related to himself.

Porthos, as we have already learned, was the direct opposite of Athos: he not only talked a lot, but talked loudly. It is necessary, however, to give him justice: he did not care whether they listened to him or not. He talked for his own pleasure - for the pleasure of listening to himself. He spoke decisively about everything, with the exception of the sciences, referring to the deep disgust that, according to him, scientists had instilled in him since childhood.

This worthy gentleman - we, of course, mean Athos - was very taciturn. For five or six years now he had lived in the closest friendship with Porthos and Aramis. During this time, friends more than once saw a smile on his face, but they never heard his laugh. His words were short and expressive, he always said what he wanted to say, and nothing more: no embellishments, patterns and beauty. He spoke only of the essential, without touching on the details.

... the duke glanced from time to time at young man as if not believing that such prudence, such courage and devotion can be combined with the appearance of a young man who is barely twenty years old.

The shade of mystery that enveloped Athos made this man even more interesting, who, even in moments of complete intoxication, was never betrayed by his eyes or tongue, despite the subtlety of the questions asked to him.

During the crossing, my lady succeeded in unraveling the rope with which her legs were tied; when the boat reached the shore, my lady jumped to the ground with a light movement and began to run.
But the ground was wet; climbing the slope, my lady slipped and fell to her knees.
A superstitious thought struck her: she decided that heaven refused to help her, and froze in the position in which she was, bowing her head and folding her arms.

The plot of the book "Three Musketeers"

The novel opens with the story of a young provincial nobleman, Chevalier d'Artagnan. The young native of Gascony travels to Paris, the capital of the French kingdom, to join the ranks of the most elite regiment of those times: the Gascon dreams of becoming a royal musketeer.
The father, whose childhood friend is the captain of the Musketeers, M. de Treville, gives his son with him letter of recommendation, which should provide the young nobleman with a position in the regiment, sword and horse.
On the way, the young Gascon gets involved in a dubious adventure, and, not knowing the intrigues of the aristocracy and many of the rules of life, he accidentally crosses the road to Count Rochefort, the cardinal's loyal servant. Having entered into a fight with him and his henchmen, the young man loses his letter of recommendation.
Having come to his senses, he goes on to Paris, and finally reaches the goal. Having made his way to the reception to M. de Treville, he hardly proves that he is the son of his father - after all, the letter of recommendation is lost .. Treville, still distrustful of the unknown young man, appoints him to the regiment of his son-in-law Desesard, so that d'Artagnan would show himself in service and got used to metropolitan life. However, at a reception at Treville, the young man notices Rochefort in the window, and with a cry rushes after him, bumping into Athos, Porthos and Aramis on the way. Those, for various reasons, appoint a cheeky young man to duel, not suspecting that they mean the same place and close time. The duels appointed on that day were given to become the beginning of their strong long-term friendship. On the same day, looking for a place to live, d'Artagnan meets the beautiful Constance Bonacieux; with her husband, a haberdasher, a nobleman negotiates a lease. Alexandr Duma

where it is established that in the heroes of the story, which we will have the honor to tell our readers, there is nothing mythological, although their names end in "wasps" and "is".

About a year ago, while searching for my story of Louis XIV in the Royal Library, I accidentally attacked the Memoirs of M. a more or less long period in the Bastille, in Amsterdam, at Pierre Rouge's. The title tempted me, I took these memoirs home, of course, with the permission of the library curator, and eagerly pounced on them.

I am not going to analyze this curious essay in detail here, but only advise those of my readers who know how to appreciate the pictures of the past to familiarize themselves with it. They will find in these memoirs portraits sketched by the hand of the master, and, although these cursory sketches in most cases were made on the doors of the barracks and on the walls of the tavern, readers nevertheless recognize in them images of Louis XIII, Anne of Austria, Richelieu, Mazarin and many courtiers of that time, the images are as faithful as in the story of Mr. Anketil.

But, as you know, the whimsical mind of a writer sometimes worries about something that wide circles of readers do not notice. Admiring, as others will undoubtedly admire, the merits of the memoirs already noted here, we were, however, most struck by one circumstance to which no one before us, probably, had paid the slightest attention.

D "Artagnan says that when he first appeared to the captain of the royal musketeers, M. de Treville, he met in his reception room three young men who served in that famous regiment, where he himself sought the honor of being enrolled, and that their name was Athos, Porthos and Aramis.

We confess that the names alien to our hearing struck us, and it immediately occurred to us that these are just pseudonyms under which d "Artagnan hid names, perhaps famous, unless the bearers of these nicknames chose them themselves on the day when, out of a whim , out of frustration or poverty, they donned a simple musketeer's cloak.

Since then, we have not known rest, trying to find in the writings of that time at least some trace of these extraordinary names, which aroused our keenest curiosity.

The mere list of books we have read for this purpose would constitute a whole chapter, which, perhaps, would be very instructive, but hardly entertaining for our readers. Therefore, we will only tell them that at the moment when, having lost heart from such a long and fruitless effort, we had already decided to give up our research, we finally found, guided by the advice of our famous and learned friend Paulin Paris, an in-folio manuscript, marked. N 4772 or 4773, we do not remember exactly, and entitled:

"Reminiscences of the Comte de La Fer on some events that took place in France towards the end of the reign of King Louis XIII and the beginning of the reign of King Louis XIV."

You can imagine how great our joy was when, leafing through this manuscript, our last hope, we found the name of Athos on the twenty-seventh page, the name of Porthos on the twenty-seventh, and the name of Aramis on the thirty-first.

The discovery of a completely unknown manuscript in an era when historical science reached such a high degree of development, seemed to us a miracle. We hastened to ask permission to print it, in order to appear someday with someone else's baggage at the Academy of Inscriptions and Fine Literature, if we fail - which is very likely - to be admitted to the French Academy with our own.

Such permission, we consider it our duty to say this, was kindly given to us, which we note here in order to publicly expose ill-wishers in lies who claim that the government under which we live is not very disposed to writers.

We now bring to the attention of our readers the first part of this precious manuscript, restoring its proper title, and pledge, if this first part has the success it deserves, and of which we have no doubt, to publish the second immediately.

In the meantime, since the recipient is the second father, we invite the reader to see in us, and not in the Comte de la Fere, the source of his pleasure or boredom.

So, we move on to our story.

Chapter 1. THREE GIFTS OF MR. D "ARTANYAN-FATHER

On the first Monday in April 1625, the entire population of the town of Menta, where the author of The Novel of the Rose was once born, seemed as agitated as if the Huguenots were about to turn him into a second La Rochelle. Some of the townspeople, at the sight of women running towards Main Street, and hearing the screams of children coming from the threshold of houses, hastily put on armor, armed themselves with a musket, some with a cane to give themselves a more masculine appearance, and rushed to the hotel "Free Miller", in front of which a thick and noisy crowd of curious people gathered, growing every minute.

In those days, such unrest was a common occurrence, and on a rare day this or that city could not record such an event in its chronicles. Noble gentlemen fought each other; the king fought with the cardinal; the Spaniards were at war with the king. But, in addition to this struggle - now secret, now overt, now hidden, now open - there were also thieves, and beggars, and Huguenots, vagabonds and servants who fought with everyone. The townspeople armed themselves against thieves, against vagabonds, against servants, often against sovereign nobles, from time to time against the king, but never against the cardinal or the Spaniards.

It was by virtue of this ingrained habit that on the aforementioned first Monday in April 1625, the townspeople, hearing the noise and seeing neither the yellow-red badges nor the livery of the servants of the Duke de Richelieu, rushed to the Free Miller Hotel.

And only there the reason for the turmoil became clear to everyone.

A young man ... Let's try to sketch his portrait: imagine Don Quixote at the age of eighteen, Don Quixote without armor, without armor and legguards, in a woolen jacket, the blue color of which has acquired a shade average between red and sky blue. Oblong swarthy face; prominent cheekbones are a sign of cunning; overdeveloped jaw muscles, an integral feature by which one can immediately identify a Gascon, even if he is not wearing a beret - and the young man was in a beret decorated with the likeness of a feather; an open and intelligent look; hooked nose, but finely delineated; height is too high for a young man and not enough for a mature man.

An inexperienced person might have mistaken him for a farmer's son set off on a journey, if not for a long sword on a leather belt, banging against its owner's legs when he walked, and ruffling his horse's mane when he rode.

For our young man had a horse, and even so wonderful that it was really noticed by everyone. It was a Béarn gelding of about twelve or even fourteen years old, yellowish-red in color, with a shabby tail and swollen heads. This horse, although it was cowardly, dropping its muzzle below the knees, which freed the rider from the need to pull on the mouthpiece, was still able to cover a distance of eight leagues in a day. These qualities of a horse were, unfortunately, so obscured by its awkward appearance and strange coloring that in those years when everyone knew a lot about horses, the appearance of the aforementioned Béarnan gelding in Mengue, where he entered a quarter of an hour ago through the gate of Beaugency, produced such an unfavorable the impression that cast a shadow even on the rider himself.

This awareness touched the young d'Artagnan (that was the name of this new Don Quixote, who was riding the new Rocinante) all the more sharply that he did not try to hide from himself how ridiculous he was - no matter how good a rider he was - on such a horse. It was not for nothing that he was unable to suppress a heavy sigh, accepting this gift from d'Artagnan the father.

He knew that such a horse was worth twenty livres at the most. But it cannot be denied that the words that accompanied this gift were priceless.

My son! - said the Gascon nobleman with the purest Béarnian accent, from which Henry IV could not get out of the habit until the end of his days. - My son, this horse saw the light in your father's house about thirteen years ago and all these years served us faithfully, which should dispose you to him. Do not sell him under any circumstances, let him die of old age in honor and peace. And if you have to embark on a campaign on it, spare him as you would have spared an old servant. At the court, - continued d "Artagnan-father," in the event that you are accepted there, to which, however, the antiquity of your family gives you the right, support for your own sake and your loved ones the honor of your noble name, which is more than five centuries worn with dignity by your ancestors. By the word "close" I mean your relatives and friends. Do not submit to anyone except the king and the cardinal. Only by courage - you hear, the only courage! - a noble in our day can punch his way. Who will falter. at least for a moment, perhaps, he will miss the opportunity that fortune presented him at that moment. You are young and must be brave for two reasons: firstly, you are a Gascon, and, besides, you are my son. Do not be afraid of accidents and look adventures. I gave you the opportunity to learn how to wield a sword. You have iron calves and a steel grip. Fight for any reason, fight a duel, especially since duels are prohibited and, therefore, you need to be doubly courageous to fight. be. I can, my son, give you only fifteen crowns, a horse, and the advice you just heard with me. Your mother will add to this a recipe for a certain balm she received from a gypsy; this balm has miraculous powers and heals any wounds except heart. Take advantage of all this and live happily and for a long time ... I have only one more thing to add, namely, to give you an example - not myself, for I have never been to court and participated as a volunteer only in wars for faith. I mean Monsieur de Treville, who was once my neighbor. As a child, he had the honor to play with our King Louis the Thirteenth - may God bless him! It happened that their games turned into a fight, and in these fights, the advantage was not always on the side of the king. The tumaks he received inspired the king with great respect and friendship for M. de Treville. Later, during his first trip to Paris, Monsieur de Treville fought with other persons five times, after the death of the late king and until the young age came of age - seven times, not counting wars and campaigns, and from the day of adulthood to the present day - a hundred times! And not without reason, despite the edicts, orders and decrees, he is now the captain of the Musketeers, that is, the Caesar's legion, which the king highly values and which the cardinal is afraid of. And he is not afraid of much, as everyone knows. In addition, M. de Treville receives ten thousand crowns a year. And therefore, he is a very great nobleman. He started just like you. Come to him with this letter, follow his example and act as he did.

Sometimes, when you open a book, you hope to see one thing, but as a result you find much more. You understand how much depth, how many details are present in the work, what a variety of characters and emotions. The novel by Alexander Dumas "The Three Musketeers" is considered a classic of historical and adventure literature, he was filmed a large number of once. And although it is recommended to be read to schoolchildren, an adult will be able to see much more in it. Moreover, emotions will not always be positive, because the writer speaks not only of virtues, but also of vices. Of course, much can be justified by the fact that in the described time this was the way of life of the whole society. This book is about courage and cowardice, it is about love and loyalty and at the same time about hatred and betrayal. There is a place for romance and cold calculation.

The book tells the fascinating story of the adventures of D'Artagnan and his three Musketeer friends. The main character- Gascon of noble origin, who decides to leave his home and go to the capital to become a musketeer. He is full of hope, but on the way he gets into a fight, and his letter of introduction is stolen. Upon arrival in the capital, d'Artagnan learns that he cannot be immediately accepted as a musketeer, and then insults three musketeer friends who challenge him to a duel. By the will of fate, they subsequently become friends, and then their unforgettable adventures begin, full of dangers, intrigue, drinking, communication with beautiful women and dignitaries. As a result, will d'Artagnan be able to fulfill his dream?
