How to make a wooden window frame with your own hands from bars

The technological process of manufacturing a structure consists of the following stages:

  2. Accurately calculate the dimensions of the structure and begin to saw the boards, each of them should be divided into four parts the right size, and they are connected to each other. Grooves are made on the vertical parts of the frame. Spikes are cut out on horizontal segments. After making all these parts, they are coated with wood glue and the parts of the box are connected, not forgetting to maintain the accuracy of all connections using a 90° metal square.
  3. The next stage of work is strengthening special window angles in the corners of the ends of the frame. They are purchased at construction market or in a store, and they are necessary to give required rigidity box.
  4. Give the glue some time to dry and begin making the frame for the movable part of the window. The beam for it should have a smaller cross-section than for a window frame. Therefore, its cross-section is reduced so that the gap between the frame and the main frame is in the range from 0.1 to 0.2 cm.
  5. The frame parts are connected in the same sequence and using tenons and grooves, as described above in the manufacture of the window frame.
  6. After the inside of the window is completely assembled, it is attached to the frame using hinges. You must first insert a glass sheet, although this can be done after the frame is completely assembled with your own hands.

Making a window from plywood

If you try to make a factory-made frame profile at home, you can ruin the purchased material.

Therefore, to eliminate this problem, you can make a frame with your own hands from strips cut from a sheet of plywood.

To do this, it is quite enough to have four such stripes, which must be connected into a rectangle. At the same time, do not forget to set a right angle at the ends of the structure using a measuring square. At the same time, do not forget to do precise measurements, otherwise the design will turn out to be lopsided. In this “hybrid” method, windows with a shaped profile can be obtained from plywood.

Making a box

Despite the ease of manufacture, the box must be treated with great respect. After all, it is fixed in window opening the box will take on the main load. If it cracks or bends under the weight of the wall, it will be impossible to insert a window into it, and the glass of the inserted one will probably break.

The manufacture of the box begins with blanks. To do this, 2 pieces are sawn off from the board, the length corresponding to the width of the window opening, and 2 pieces corresponding to its length. The ends of the boards corresponding to the width of the box are turned into a tenon 20 cm thick using a jigsaw and chisel. And at the ends of the boards, measured along the length, a groove of the same thickness is made in the middle.

After this, for each board you need to select a groove with a plane that is 50 mm wide and 3-4 mm deep. The resulting ridges will subsequently serve as support for the window frame and contribute to better sealing of the window. Having completed the selection, all four sides of the box are connected to each other.

The corners are first fixed with wood glue, and then two holes Ø12-15 mm are made at the ends of the boards so that the drill goes through the top board and goes 10 mm into the end of the bottom board. Then wooden rods of the appropriate diameter are inserted into each hole. These rods provide immovable fixation of boards connected at right angles.

Typically, window frames are inserted into the wall directly during the construction of the walls, and frames are inserted after the roof is completed. The box must be inserted with the selected side facing outwards. Since the boxes are subject to significant loads for quite a long time, especially on their top part, then, to avoid warping, temporary spacers are inserted into them before installing the frames.

These spacers are vertically inserted 25-30 mm boards, 10 mm longer than the distance between the transverse boards of the box. The lower part of the boards is cut straight, and the upper part is cut at a slight (4-5º) angle, so that the spacer can be inserted more tightly into the box, and later it can be easily removed from there. The number of spacers depends on the width of the span and is taken at the rate of 1 spacer per 40-50 cm of width.

Window frame assembly

The shape of the window frame profile depends on the number of glasses inserted and their thickness. With a single-glass profile, the frame has 2 grooves: 1 – for glass, 2 – for a more airtight insertion into the box. For a double-glass profile, you will need one more additional groove. If you need three glasses in the window, it is better to make an additional single-glass frame that will be inserted into the frame from the inside.

First you need to cut the timber correctly. Having measured the distance between the boards of the box, mark the same on the beam, and then saw it off, but not straight, but at an angle of strictly 45º. The ends are sawed off along a converging path, i.e. one edge remains the same length, while the opposite edge becomes shorter. If the window is planned to be hinged, then you need to saw off 4 frame heights and 4 blanks corresponding to half its width plus 3 cm. If everything is measured and sawed off correctly, then the blanks connected together should form a rectangle, 1-2 mm smaller in size than the internal perimeter of the box.

On each blank that will be attached to the window frame, a cut of 10 mm wide and 5 mm deep is made on one side of the long edge with a plane to ensure greater tightness when installing the frame in the box. On the short edge, samples of the same size are also made. If the profile is single-glass, then on the short edge one sample is made at the diametrically opposite end from the one made on the long edge. With a double-glass profile, samples are made from both ends of the short edge.

Grooves are also made on the remaining two bars, but differently. They are made half the width and half the depth of the timber, but in mirror image. That is, the grooves are made so that when they touch, the two halves are connected into a single structure. The same grooves must be provided in the ends of the horizontal bars connected to the vertical bars (this is where the extra 3 cm of width will go).

Two half-frames are assembled from these blanks. Next, as when assembling the box, holes are made at the ends, only smaller ones, Ø 8-10 mm. Then the ends are folded together and connected wooden rods. For greater reliability, long self-tapping screws are screwed into the end connections, making sure to recess their heads, and even better, the ends are fastened with metal corners.

Two assembled half-frames are attached to the window frame using small cylindrical hinges, 2 for each half-frame. The hinges are attached with screws: one half to the frame, the other to the window frame. In a static position, the two half-frames are fixed with latches or latches.

If the window will not open, then two options for the window frame are possible. If the window itself is small, then 2 frame heights and 2 widths are sawn off for the frame. Further operations for assembling the frame are completely identical to the casement window.

However, if the window size is large, then it is better to divide the glass into two or three parts. The frame body itself is assembled according to the same scheme, but 1 or 2 additional vertical beams are additionally mounted into it, on which grooves for glass are made.

To do this, grooves are made on the frame body in the middle or at a distance of 1/3 from the edges on the back side of the frame for half the beam, and in width - for the width of the beam. On additional blanks with outside The spikes are made of the same width and thickness. Then the tenons are inserted into the grooves and secured with wood glue and self-tapping screws. Such frames are not attached, but simply inserted into the box. They are fixed with platbands, and the remaining cracks are sealed polyurethane foam.

Modern windows come in a variety of materials, shapes and colors. The world's leading manufacturers offer frames made of aluminum, plastic and natural wood. And no matter what material is used in the production of windows, thanks to new equipment and tools, all products are equally airtight and durable. But buying structures that cost $100-300 each is just to glaze a small greenhouse or not everyone can afford it. Therefore, owners often have a question: “How are window frames made with their own hands?” We will try to answer this today.

Preparing the necessary tools

How to make a window frame with your own hands?

Here we will look at how a window frame is made from glued laminated glass. This material is highly reliable, durable and relatively light in weight. Glued laminated timber is exactly what you need. Can also be used ordinary timber, however, it is unlikely that such a product will withstand more than one season of use.

Having prepared everything necessary tools and drawings, you can safely get to work. First, we make a window frame. To do this, a groove is cut in a board with a cross-section of 50x150 millimeters so that in profile the element is shaped like the letter “G”. Thanks to this action, the window will be more protected from moisture and airtight.

About the connection method

It is important to remember that poorly glued boards will not guarantee the durability of the window frame, which means that all the painstaking work will go down the drain. Beam dimensions

It is worth noting that the beam for this element should have a smaller cross-section - instead of 50x150 mm, you need to take 50x50 mm. The first step is to make a profile. When performing this work, do not forget to leave a small gap (1-2 millimeters) between the frame and the box. After this, the profile must be sawed into blanks, in which tenons are then cut and grooves cut into them. The frame boards are connected in the same way as the window frame.

Final stage

On final stage This element goes through a glazing process. The window frame and frame are equipped with hinges, and then both elements are treated with a special moisture-resistant agent to increase resistance to moisture.

Making window frames from plywood

Since the factory technology for producing window frames requires special expensive tools and equipment, making such products at home will be very problematic. That is why folk craftsmen have developed their own method of creating a profile by fastening strips of plywood. For such a window frame, 4 strips are enough - they are then fastened together into a rectangle. The whole production technology consists of making several rectangles from strips of plywood different widths and secure them together. This way you will get the perfect laminated timber of the desired configuration.

Using this technology, not only a regular blind window frame is made, but also a window with two and three glasses. An element with one window can be easily made from 8 plywood strips. They end up forming two rectangles (with slightly different widths from each other). The strips of the second layer are cut a little narrower - this is necessary in order to secure the glass. Next, the wooden ones (namely, all their parts) are connected using self-tapping screws. All fastening points are additionally treated with wood glue. That's it, the wooden window frames have been successfully manufactured at this stage!

Plastic windows are, of course, great, but what to do if you don’t have enough money to buy such a design? The solution is simple - do it yourself wooden window frames. And what and how - let's figure it out now.

Selection of material

Stage No. 3. Making a box or frame

A groove or groove is made in the blank boards, the depth of which is 15 mm; the groove is a recess in the shape of the letter G. We will need to make four identical parts of this kind.

Connect the box parts together using wood glue or PVA glue. In the finished rectangle, holes are drilled in the corners and a 3-4 cm rod is driven in. This wedge ensures a reliable connection of the parts at right angles.

The box is ready. It is placed in the window opening and secured with dowels. The gaps around the perimeter are foamed with polyurethane foam.

Stage No. 4. Making a window

The frame requires a 6x4 cm beam. The shape and design depend on the number of compartments, glass and the size of the glazing beads.

There are two types of profile:

  • single glass;
  • double-glazed.

The single-glass design includes two grooves: one for installation in the box, and the other for mounting the glass.

Double glass profile - more complex design, having three grooves, for two glasses and a box.

Typically, glass with a section thickness of 4 mm is used, while the bead size will be 10 mm.

The base of the frame is assembled from blanks. To make assembly convenient, the ends of the workpieces are cut at an angle of 45 degrees. And the pre-prepared profile is joined using the tongue-and-groove method, which ensures reliable adhesion of the parts and immobility of the structure.

You can also consider another amplification option - metal corner. This part is sold at any hardware store. The corners are attached to each corner of the structure using self-tapping screws. Currently, builders have begun to abandon this method, believing that it is not aesthetically pleasing. However, if the window will be painted later, this option may be considered.

Stage No. 5. Installation of glass

If cracks are formed during the installation process, then there will be blowing through such windows.

When carrying out this process, you must follow the safety rules:

  • work must be carried out in gloves with tight rubber coating to protect the palms of your hands from cuts;

  • Protect your eyes with glasses, as there is a risk of glass shards and shavings.

Working with a glass cutter also has its own subtleties. So, how to cut glass. The glass cutter's movements on the glass surface should be smooth with a moderate degree of pressure. If you do not apply enough pressure, the cut will be of poor quality and further actions, you will get a jagged chip. On the contrary, excessive pressure can push through the glass, and you risk being injured by glass shards.

A ruler is used to cut glass. The material from which it will be made is not of fundamental importance. If you don't have a ruler, you can use a straight edge.

Important! The length of the ruler must exceed the size of the glass.

After processing with a glass cutter, the canvas is moved to the edge of the table and lightly pressed with your hand. If you did everything correctly, the glass will break at the cutting line. This way we cut out all the glass for the window.

For final installation on wooden parts apply sealant. It is better to take a colorless product so that the window looks aesthetically flawless. Next, apply the glass and let the sealant dry. The canvas is secured on top with a glazing bead. The bead is a triangular strip that simultaneously presses against the glass and frame. Its task is to fix the glass and hide the seam.

The lath is mounted using thin nails, less often with self-tapping screws if the bead is wide.

Stage No. 6. Window installation

Making a two-piece frame

When you need a window that will open, the technology changes a little and becomes more complicated. This window is made a little differently. A beam is mounted in the center in a vertical position, which has grooves similar to the frame. The second half of the window is made separately and has a frame several centimeters thinner. It is attached to the main structure and represents a “door”.
