To build their own drawing, they are armed with a large sheet of paper, a pencil, a ruler and a tape measure. The dimensions of the future product are measured with a tape measure, it should fit seamlessly into the allotted place in the room.

All dimensions are fixed, and with the help of a ruler they are transferred to paper. All details are cut according to the drawings. Do not forget to add the thickness of the legs and countertops to the drawing.

A plywood coffee table is produced in a short time. Advice to inexperienced craftsmen: sawing all the parts can be ordered at a building materials store. Based on a sheet thickness of 18 mm, we order 800 × 800 mm - a table top, 460 × 100 mm - four strips, 700 × 500 mm - a shelf, 700 × 500 mm - two bottoms, four plastic corners, eight confirmations and self-tapping screws 3.5 × 16 mm (16 pieces should be enough). All elements must be covered with melamine edging.

Let's move on to the assembly:

  1. According to the drawing, we cut out the required shape of the shelf with a jigsaw. Be sure to use a fine pitch file for carving wood.
  2. We fasten the vertical strips to the tabletop using corners and self-tapping screws.
  3. In the middle of the slats, you need to install a shelf on the confirmations. To screw them in, we drill holes in advance with a 4.5 mm drill. Also, confirmations need to be screwed to the bottom.

Making a coffee table with your own hands from scrap materials

A favorite topic of many creative people is how to use the materials at hand for practical use. Products made of tires are especially popular - they are convenient to install in summer cottages and verandas, and from suitcases that have served their time as travelers.

Tire side table

There are different ideas on how to use tires as a table. What pleases me is that such products are durable, original and take a minimum of time to manufacture.

Here's a quick tutorial on how to create a garden furniture set with a small table at the top.

IllustrationDescription of action
Prepare 11 tires of the same diameter. We take two tires on the chair and connect them with ourselves using a screwdriver and self-tapping screws. We take three tires for the table.
Cut out 4 circles from plywood (pressed shavings) with a size slightly larger than the inner diameter of the tire, and one large circle for the table top.
The result is a cute garden set.

Suitcase table

Have you got an old suitcase? How wonderful!

So what is needed for such a quick transformation? Four stable legs of any type - the main thing is that they match the final decor and easily support the product. Legs can be bought at Avito or torn from old unnecessary furniture, made on a lathe. White enamel can be used for painting, as it is easy to decorate. But, in general, the color can be any, up to gilding. If the appearance of the suitcase is perfectly preserved, then you can not paint it. If you wish, you also need PVA glue, decoupage napkins, brushes, sandpaper, gold or silver acrylic.

First, paint the base and let it dry. All irregularities are sanded and a second layer of enamel is applied. Now we paint the legs and, as soon as they dry, glue them with furniture glue to the base. That's all the work! We turn the table over and admire the result of labor.

How to make a do-it-yourself coffee table with additional elements

If the hostess loves rearrangements, or the table must be moved, wheels are attached to the legs as an additional element. It is very convenient. If the table is small, then it can be served for tea in the kitchen and rolled into the living room. Drawers are another additional and functional element. It turns out that the table becomes twice as comfortable.

Trolley on wheels

To create a do-it-yourself coffee table on wheels, ready-made wheels are required. A small photo gallery of tables on wheels: they may not necessarily be small, large metal or plastic wheels look even more interesting!

The wheels are attached to the legs when the supports themselves are already attached to the table top.

Drawer table

There can be from one to three or four drawers, it depends on the table model.

To assemble a simple drawer, you need 4 small chipboard panels, wood glue, guides, and self-tapping screws.

After fixing all the guides, check the smoothness and accuracy of the stroke. Then we assemble the box and simply insert it into the guides.

DIY coffee table restoration: photos of interesting ideas

Do-it-yourself coffee table decor is limited by the creator's imagination. Any fantasy can be realized with effort. The decor must be matched to the style of the room, otherwise the dissonance will make the thing superfluous. But if you don't want to make a new coffee table with your own hands? Then you need to learn how to restore the old one.

Decoupage is an interesting technique using PVA glue, beautiful napkins. If you want to make decoupage antique, then use crackle varnish.

Nafoto below is the answer to the question of how to update a coffee table with your own hands.

If the furniture needs updating due to its condition, then first of all, the table is turned over on the table top and the fastening of the support legs is checked. If something needs to be tweaked, then there is no point in delaying - the furniture will continue to deteriorate faster. You can simply repaint the table, sand it and try to paint it.

PVA is applied to the tabletop, scraps are laid. At first, the leaves may lie unevenly, but as they dry they will flatten out. Finally, the product is varnished.

Coffee tables were very popular in the 90s of the twentieth century, they were placed in living rooms and served to store the press. In the age of high technology, many people read the latest news on the Web, and therefore rarely buy magazines. But such tables have still not lost their popularity and are still installed in apartments, because they are comfortable and functional. And instead of spending money on buying new furniture, you can make a magazine with your own hands. It is enough to put a little imagination and effort.

From the history of the coffee table

This piece of furniture has a very long history, despite the fact that it became most popular in Russia only in the twentieth century. A coffee table is a small table, often elongated or with a round top, which was usually placed in the living room in front of or between the chairs and served to store magazines, books and other printed materials. It could also be used to decorate the interior or as a coffee table for placing cups of drinks on it. According to GOST, this is a small low table designed for interior decoration and use in a recreation area.

For the first time, such tables appeared in Europe - a part of the world where people love comfort and beauty. The first table was made around the 18th-19th centuries - according to historians, it was made by a certain W. Goodwin. After that, this type of furniture was actively produced by a couple of furniture companies.

On a note! The heights of the old and modern tables were very different. The ancestors of the modern variation were much taller. The height of the product was especially influenced by the East, where it is customary to make small tables.

Nowadays, a coffee table can be seen not only in living rooms, but also in offices and other areas of the house. Its main difference from a conventional table is the small size of the table top and its relatively low height. Some tables, in addition to itself, have shelves-crossbars, on which it is convenient to place directly the press or any small items. Some table variations have replaced these shelves with drawers. You can put souvenirs, vases on the countertop itself, use it as a stand for mugs and glasses during tea drinking, etc. Thanks to this table, you can arrange a cozy seating area in the room or arrange a small corner.

Usually the height of a coffee table is no more than 50 cm, but in general there are tables that are both smaller and larger. The wishes of the owner play an important role here.

What to make of?

So, we sorted out the history of the tables. This is really the kind of furniture, without which any room does not seem as comfortable as it could be. So it's worth buying it, especially since the simplest options are inexpensive. If we are talking about expensive design options, but there is no money for them, or you just want something of your own, individual, then an alternative to buying can be to work on making a table yourself. Advantages of a homemade product:

  • minimum cash costs;
  • the opportunity to realize your wishes to the fullest;
  • exclusive design;
  • convenience due to precise adjustment of parameters and sizes;
  • the opportunity to make the table of your dreams;
  • a chance to use scrap materials for crafting;
  • a chance to give things new life.

A hand-made table can be placed in any of the rooms at home or in the office. It will not only harmoniously fit into the interior, but also warm the soul with the fact that it is made independently, and no one else has exactly the same product.

Now, when interesting and unusual design solutions are so popular, magazine tables can look anything you like. They can be large enough or compact, simple and carved, with different shapes of legs and tabletops. Here, as the creator's imagination wishes. Even in the store, sometimes you can find very interesting variations that will surely decorate the interior and will serve faithfully for many years.

A variety of materials are used for the manufacture of coffee tables:

  • glass;
  • metal;
  • wood;
  • stone:
  • plastic.

In general, you can use anything and you can combine materials with each other. Even natural material in the form of driftwood can be used in skillful hands. Of course, the easiest option is to make a wooden table. The easiest way to work with him is at home.

Table. Basic materials.

MaterialSpecifications

This is the simplest, but at the same time durable material. The solid wood side table is beautiful, environmentally friendly, strong and durable. Working with wood at home is easy and pleasant, no need to buy additional equipment. Derivatives of wood - plywood, MDF, chipboard - can be attributed to the same category of materials. You can also make coffee tables from them, and no additional equipment is required either. But, for example, MDF and chipboard are more difficult to saw, the strength and density of the materials is high. They are very afraid of water. Plywood is easy to work with, but less durable than solid wood. However, it is not always possible to find good quality plywood.
Usually, metal is used only for making the frame or support for the table, tabletops are not made from this material. It is quite difficult to work with it at home, it may require special equipment such as a welding machine. But if you wish, you can also use metal to create a homemade table. It will turn out to be strong and durable. It is only important that the metal is covered with paint or a special protective layer, otherwise it will quickly rust.
Typically, glass can be used to create coffee table tops and shelves, while legs are made of metal or wood. Glass is not easy to work with due to its physical properties (fragility), however, thanks to this material, interesting design solutions can be realized. The downside of glass tables is that stains and streaks will constantly appear on their surface, which is not easy to get rid of. Also, these are rather heavy products due to the fact that thick glass is used - a too fragile table will turn out from a thin sheet.

On a note! If desired, you can turn it into a coffee table and an ordinary table, and also use it to create stumps, driftwood, the remains of old furniture or household appliances, the remnants of repair materials. Here you just need to turn on your imagination.

What do you need to work?

So, the simplest version of a table that can be made at home is a wooden one. And to work with wood or its derivatives, the following tools and materials may be required.

Do not forget that before the main work you need to draw a clear diagram of the future table and estimate its dimensions. The drawing will help not to be mistaken in the future, and will also provide the ability to calculate the required amount of materials for the manufacture of the product. So it will not be superfluous to arm yourself with a sheet of paper and a pencil, as well as a square, a ruler, a tape measure.

On a note! Those who own a computer can be advised to use design programs where they can draw the selected model of the table, calculate its dimensions and even estimate its appearance in the end.

We make a table from racks

From ordinary wooden thin slats, you can very quickly and easily build a universal table, which, if there is sufficient strength, can even fulfill the role of a bench.

Step 1. To create a small table from the rails, you will need boards from which the rails will be cut (2.5x7.5 cm - 3 pieces, 2.5x10 cm - 1 piece, 2.5x5 cm - 8 pieces). You also need to take mounts for the legs (4 pcs), the legs themselves (you can tapered them with a length of about 40 cm), screws and self-tapping screws, wood putty and paint, as well as decorative nails. You will also need sandpaper. From the tools you need to get a drill with drills, a hacksaw or jigsaw, clamps.

Miter saw

Step 2. Next, you need to take boards 2.5x7.5 cm and cut their ends at an angle of 45 degrees, and from those that have parameters 2.5x5 cm, you need to make slats that have the same length as the very first boards cut at an angle, only inside, up to 45 degree cuts.

Step 3. Then you need to take the blanks made by the second, and place them between the boards, cut at an angle. All slats must be level. Next, you need to measure the distance between the extreme boards and make two blanks-jumpers from a 2.5x10 cm board. They will act as two supports for narrower rails. These jumpers must be fixed with self-tapping screws on the rails. Also, using a special jig, you need to drill two holes at the ends of the supports. They will allow you to connect the structure with the extreme bars. However, you can simply connect them with self-tapping screws.

Step 4. The blanks for the box (2.5x7.5 cm) must be pressed with clamps to the edges of the structure. The main thing is that everything is assembled and installed exactly. So that there are no traces of the clamps, it is recommended to put small pieces of wood under them. Now you can screw the sides to the lintels through the holes made in step 3, or simply with self-tapping screws.

Clamp prices

Clamps

Step 5. It is required to measure the width of the table and make the ends of the box. The end edges of the slats in the middle, as well as the edges of the edge boards cut at an angle of 45 degrees, must be greased with a special glue for wood.

Step 6. Next, you need to install the end boards in this place and tighten them with a belt. In this position, the table blank must be left until the glue dries. You can additionally fix the boards to the slats using decorative nails.

Step 7. Now it remains to grind the surface of the table, then cover it with primer and paint, and also attach the legs to it. It is important to remember that after applying the primer, you need to wait for it to dry, and only then apply the beauty. The rest of the work should be done only after the paint layer has completely dried. In addition, the table can be varnished.

Driftwood table

An original and stylish table can be made from an ordinary driftwood found in the forest and a piece of glass. Here, even special skills are not required for the natural material to turn into a beautiful coffee table.

Step 1. The first step in the forest is to find a snag that is suitable in shape and size. Usually just the root part of a fairly mature tree is used.

Step 2. It is required to remove all the bark from the surface of the driftwood, to clear it of debris and earth.

Step 3. It is necessary to cut off the excess wood from the bottom and top of the driftwood, forming the most even cuts. One of them will serve as the bottom support, the second - as a support for the glass.

Step 5. The next step is to cover the surface of the driftwood with wood varnish and let the varnish dry well. You need to cover the entire surface of the former tree.

Step 6. Now it's time to tackle the countertop, which will be made of glass. You need to cut a piece of the desired size, and then grind its edges. It is important to remember that the glass must be thick enough and the edges must be sanded using water.

Step 8. It is necessary to drill holes in the glass for the bolts fixing the glass to the driftwood.

Step 10. It remains to close the bolts with decorative plugs and that's it, the table can be used.

Log table

A very interesting and original table can be made from ordinary logs.

Step 1. To begin with, you need to make a frame-box, for which ordinary plywood about 2 cm thick is used. You need to cut out a base blank of about 60x80 cm from the sheet, and attach plywood walls to it from above.

Step 3. Part of the logs must be fixed on the base around the perimeter of the box from the outside. At the bottom of the base, you need to attach legs or wheels for the future table. It is required to glue the logs to the base with glue, but from below they additionally need to be fixed with self-tapping screws.

Step 4. Next, all the logs are installed inside the box, and the spaces between them are covered with layer-by-layer putty on wood. The main thing is to dry each layer well. As soon as the putty dries, it is important to sand the surface of the table well.

Step 5. The table can now be used. It is also recommended to cover its surface with a transparent varnish.

By the same principle, you can make tables from larger logs, or take a large stump right away, peel it of the bark and varnish it. It remains only to screw the legs to it - and the table is ready!

As can be judged from all of the above, a wooden table for the living room, which will play the role of both a coffee table and a tea room, is not difficult to make. Of course, there are critically challenging variations, and to make them, you can't do without skills and abilities. However, if you wish, you can choose something light, and as a result, it turns out that it is not so difficult to make a simple homemade coffee table from ordinary wood.

Making furniture at home, not on a production scale, is not a difficult process. A minimum skill of handling a hammer, a hacksaw for wood, a tape measure and a screwdriver is enough.

But before you make a coffee table with your own hands, you need to stock up on material, study various assembly schemes, sketches and drawings. If you have imagination, furniture can be made from any unnecessary trash gathering dust in the garage or in the attic.

Equipment

In the process of making a coffee table, you will need tools and supplies. And also various, photos, sketches, drawings or just ideas about what you can do with your own hands from improvised material.

To make a table you will need:

  • Hammer;
  • Self-tapping screws and nails for wood;
  • Hacksaw,
  • Jigsaw (for decorative carving or cutting workpieces of the desired length at a specific angle)
  • Glue;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Primer;
  • Varnish or stain;
  • Various finishing materials for decoration.

Before directly making a coffee table, you need to decide what it will be made of.

Material

In principle, a coffee table can be made from any unnecessary, but not dilapidated, rubbish, of any design. Old, but durable enough (not eaten by bugs and mold) furniture. It all depends on the imagination of what is at hand.

Most often, such a piece of furniture is made of wood, metal, plastic, tempered (non-fragile) glass. But you can also convert the dining table into a coffee table. Disassemble an old wardrobe, sideboard or sideboard for spare parts and make something from them. The wheels can be taken from an old stroller.

How the process of making and assembling the table will proceed will be influenced solely by the enthusiasm and the available material at hand (or feet).

Variants

Considering various schemes, drawings of coffee tables of various craftsmen who are working on their masterpieces on the World Wide Web, we can come to the conclusion that the most optimal and cheapest option is to make it out of wood. For example, the same pallets, saw cuts, boards, logs and logs.

A coffee table made of:

  • Pallets;
  • Radiator;
  • Old window blocks;
  • Expired front door;
  • Cabinet;
  • Chest of drawers;
  • Boxes;
  • Poleniev;
  • Glass;
  • Coils from under cable coils;
  • Old chests and suitcases.

Step-by-step instruction

Let's make an original transforming coffee table from pallets. Let's consider the whole manufacturing and assembly process step by step. To do this, we need a durable, not rotten, mold-free and crack-free pallet.

When such an item is found, we start making a coffee table:

Decorating a coffee table

When the furniture is made and assembled, it needs to be brought to perfection, to give it an aesthetic look. At the same time, it is better to apply the pattern on a smooth, well-processed (sanded) surface, and applications and other overlays - on a rough, heterogeneous one.

Before you make a coffee table for dolls for your child, you need to pick up such a finishing material so that the child does not rip it off at the first opportunity and his scraps do not later lie around the room.

As for the decor, there are many ideas. Let's consider some of them:

  • Artistic carving looks good on a wooden tabletop, on a glass one - fragments laid out and fastened with glue in the form of a mosaic, a checkerboard;
  • The more relief, unusual elements - the better (carving, engraving, various "artistic disgrace");
  • For upholstery of the side surfaces, you can use fabric, ribbons, lace with tassels (make an imitation under a tablecloth);
  • You can also decorate with a coarse fabric such as a mat or from an old coat;
  • Metal corners planted with glue will perfectly emphasize the brutality of the coffee table;
  • With the help of wood stain, the tree can be aged, giving the furniture an unusual look;
  • All smooth, sliding surfaces can be intentionally "roughened" by burning various patterns and lines on the surface.

A do-it-yourself coffee table can be made a home decoration. Made of sufficient quality, it will carry not only aesthetic, but also practical functions. To please the eyes of the hosts and guests, to serve for many years.
