Hugh Glass: An Incredible Survival Story. Trapper hugh glass

I want to tell you about the American trapper Hugh Glass

He was born about 1783 in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), in a family of Irish immigrants. From his youthful years, driven by a thirst for wandering, he became a sailor. Once his ship was hijacked by the famous French pirate Jean Lafite, who was robbing ships in the Gulf of Mexico at the time. Glass had to stay in the crew of the pirate ship. After 2 years, he managed to escape, and he swam to the coast (2 miles) and set out on a journey through wild territories. The Pawnee Indians took him prisoner, but later accepted him into their tribe. Hugh Glass even married an Indian woman. A few years later, Glass traveled to St. Louis with a delegation of Indians. There he remained, deciding not to return to the tribe.

In 1822, Glass joined General William Ashley's squadron who founded the Rocky Mountain Fur Campaign in St. Louis. The general recruited a detachment of 100 young people to travel up the Missouri River and explore its origins, and for the procurement of furs by itself. The St. Louis newspapers wrote: "... it takes 100 enterprising young people ... to reach the origins of Missouri ... employment - two, three, or four years." Many famous trappers and fur traders joined the detachment, among them were Jim Bridger, Major Andrew Henry, Jedediah Smith, William Sublett, Thomas Fitzpatrick. The detachment was subsequently named "Ashley's Hundred"

The detachment set out on a campaign at the beginning of 1823. During the campaign, they encountered the Indians, as a result of which several of the participants in the campaign were killed, and Glass was wounded in the leg. General Ashley called for reinforcements, as a result of which the Indians were defeated. Fourteen people (including Hugh Glass) separated from the main detachment, led by Major Henry, who decided to follow their own route. It was planned to climb up the Grand River and then turn north to the mouth of Yellowstone, where Fort Henry was located.

A few days later, Henry's party approached the fork in the Grand River. Glass went to pick berries, but in the thickets he ran into a grizzly bear. The she-bear was with two cubs and violently attacked the hunter. Glass did not have time to shoot and he had to defend himself with one knife. Comrades who came running to his cry killed the bear, but Glass was seriously injured and was unconscious. Hugh Glass had a broken leg, the bear left deep wounds from the claws on his body - ribs were visible on his back. The companions believed that a person with such wounds would inevitably die. Therefore, it was decided to leave him.
The leader of the detachment, Major Henry, left two people with Glass, instructing them to bury him, after he gave his soul to God, while he continued his journey with the main detachment. John Fitzgerald and Jim Bridger were left with the unconscious Hugh Glass. They dug a grave and waited for his death. Five days later, Fitzgerald, fearing that they might be discovered by the arikara, convinced young Bridger to leave Glass and follow Major Henry. They took away the weapons and things of Glass, believing that they would not be needed anyway. Returning to the squad, they reported that Hugh Glass had died.

However, he survived.
Upon regaining consciousness, he found that he was left all alone, without supplies, water and weapons. Beside him lay only the skin, freshly ripped from the grizzly bear, which Fitzgerald and Bridger had covered him. He covered it with the hide, allowing the untreated hide larvae to cleanse their festering wounds.

The nearest settlement, to which the detachment dwelt, Fort Kiowa, was 200 miles (approximately 320 km) away.
Hugh Glass covered this path in almost 2 months.

On the map, it looked something like this:

Most of the distance is crawling. Here the survival skills acquired during his life in an Indian tribe were very useful to him. He ate mainly berries and roots. Once he managed to drive off two wolves from the carcass of a dead bison and eat meat.

Hugh Glass recovered for a long time. Having recovered, he decided to take revenge on John Fitzgerald and Jim Bridger who had left him. However, upon learning that Bridger had recently married, Glass forgave the newlywed. Fitzgerald, on the other hand, went into the army, so here, too, revenge had to be forgotten, since the murder of a soldier of the United States Army at that time meant a death sentence.

Having survived many more adventures, Hugh Glass was killed along with two other hunters in the winter of 1833 on the Yellowstone River as a result of an Indian attack.

In honor of Hugh Glass, a memorial sign is erected near the city of Lemmon.

The inscription on it reads:

"Hugh Glass, a member of the Ashley Fur Campaign, led by Major Henry, took the Great River in August 1823, separated during a hunt and was attacked by a grizzly bear near the bend of the Great River. He was severely crippled and could not move. Two people. Fitzgerald and Bridger were left with him, but they, believing that he was dead, took his gun and savings and left him. was able to drive off several well-fed wolves from the bison they had driven, and in an incredible way along the most difficult route came out near Fort Kiowa, below Big Bend, which was 190 miles of bird's-eye flight from the bend of the Great River. All of the above is a reliable story. He was killed by the Arikara Indians on the ice of the Yellowstone River near the Big Horn in the winter of 1832-33 John G. Nelhart immortalized his name in the epic poem Song of Hugh Glass. wounded, he moved at night, along the high hills to avoid meeting the Indians, and during the day he sought water and shelter. Guided only by his instincts, he successfully reached Big Bend and Fort Kiowa. Whatever the detail, it was a fine example of endurance and courage. "

In general, I was motivated to write about Glass by the excellent film "Man of the Wild Prairie", filmed in 1971 by Richard S. Sarafyan.

Hugh Glass was played by the famous actor Richard Harris. One of his last works - the role of Emperor Aurelius in the film "Gladiator".
The film impressed me in the first place with its filming wildlife... Majestic snow-covered forests and mountain spurs. The most powerful picture in terms of impact. Great strength the spirit of the people who conquered the west. Great actors. In addition to Harris, the film also stars John Houston, who won an Oscar as director for The Treasures of the Sierra Madre. The scene of Glass forgiving his companions looks especially strong.

Another moment.
In the massively multiplayer online RPG game World of Warcraft, developed by Blizzard Entertainment, there is a merchant character Hugh Glass :) Here's an Easter egg

This incredible story took place in 1823.

It began with the fact that an American pioneer and fur trader named Hugh Glass went to pick berries, and fell into the clutches of a grizzly bear. Who does not know, this is a giant, furious monster weighing about five hundred kilograms with sharp fangs and long (about 15 centimeters) claws. And Glass had one small knife at his disposal.

An ordinary person in such a situation could only hope for a quick death. But our hero was not an ordinary person. Therefore, with wild cries, he entered the battle and defeated the beast. When Glass's comrades came running to the screams, it was all over.

However, the winner himself was barely alive - one leg and several ribs were broken, the whole body was bleeding, and there was a huge wound on his neck, in which something squelched and bubbled with every breath. In general, it was clear that our brave hero was not a tenant.

The detachment had to move on, there was no point in dragging the dying man behind them, but they could not leave their friend to the mercy of fate either. Therefore, it was decided to leave two volunteers with Glass, who were to wait for his death and bury him properly.

Volunteers John Fitzgerald and Jim Bridger dug a grave and honestly looked after Glass for two days, hoping that he was about to make ends meet. In the end, their patience ran out, they decided to throw the dying man into the grave and catch up with the rest before they got too far. So they did, taking a gun, pistol, knife and all the rest of Glass's property.

For an ordinary person it would be completely unthinkable to survive in such a situation. But Glass, as we remember, was not an "ordinary person."

After lying down, he came to his senses, somehow pulled his tortured body out of the grave, cleaned the wounds as far as possible, fixed his leg, attaching a stick to it and ... crawled, fueled by a passionate desire to survive and take revenge on Fitzgerald and Bridger.

The nearest settlement was Fort Kiowa, and it was more than 300 kilometers to it. Glass crawled there, feeding on berries, roots, rotting corpses of animals and even snakes that came across in its path.

But our story did not end there yet, and the incredible ordeals over poor Hugh continued. He crawled for six weeks in a row and by some miracle crawled to the Cheyenne River, which flowed about 160 kilometers from his "grave". Here he was discovered by the Sioux Indians hunting in these places.

In fact, these Indians could easily remove the scalp from the white-faced, but they were so impressed by the strength of spirit and courage of Glass that they went out, helped to build a raft and sent him to Fort Kiowa by water. There, our hero hoped to find Fitzgerald and Bridger in order to deal with them for betrayal and return his beloved rifle.

He reached Fort Glass without incident and actually found his traitors there. And when I found it ... forgiven. However, after he received back his property.

Voluntary reader's contribution to support the project

In December of this year, a new film by Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu will be released - "The Survivor" with Leonardo DiCaprio in starring... After the resounding success of Birdman, a lot is expected from this film too. Both critics and viewers unanimously read him several Oscar nominations and huge box office fees. It should be noted that Birdman is not the only reason. The film crew, the cast, and the filmmaking process all promise audiences a truly unforgettable experience.

The plot of the movie "The Survivor"

The film tells about the hunter Hugh Glass. Although the hero of the picture was born in Philadelphia, the camera meets him in the Wild West. Outside - 20s of the XIX century. Glass is unlucky. He is captured by the Indians and spends a long year there, until in the end he manages to get free. Hugh's path lies in St. Louis. This is where an acquaintance happens, which will very soon determine the fate of the hunter.

Glass meets with Andrew Henry. Together with his research team, Hugh goes to the origins of the Missouri. On the way, the hunter is seriously injured by a grizzly bear. His situation is so serious that Henry, no matter how hard he tries to save his friend, comes to the conclusion: Glass's days are numbered. Since the detachment must go forward, and the wounded man is still breathing heavily, it was decided to leave two members of the group with him.

The Survivor will be filmed by Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu himself

They had to wait for Glass to give his soul to God, bury him, and then catch up with the team. Scared possible conflict with the Indians, the volunteers decide to leave the dying person (anyway, his days or even hours are numbered) and run away. True, before that, they take with them all the valuable things that were with Glass: equipment and weapons. Contrary to all predictions, Hugh remains alive. After recovering, he embarks on a journey, driven by one and only desire - to take revenge.

Prototype and background

Hugh Glass, the pioneer and hunter, actually existed. His parents moved to the States from Ireland, he himself grew up in Philadelphia, but by the event that made the whole of America known about him, he was brought by fate to St. Louis. Here Glass met General William Ashley, who was recruiting people for his expedition to the Missouri origins. As a result, the detachment included 100 people, and Glass, ready for a risky adventure, was among them.

Future heroes (and antiheroes) of his story were also on Ashley's list. The names of Andrew Henry, Jim Bridger and John Fitzgerald will also appear in the film. So, in early 1923, General Ashley's hundred moved up the Missouri. It so happened that on the way they had to get into trouble - a conflict with the Arikara Indians, on whose land the group was walking at that time. An armed fight ensued, in which a hundred lost several of their children.

Glass was wounded in the fight - injured his leg. Everything could have turned out to be much more serious consequences, but Ashley sent a messenger for help, and reinforcements arrived in time to extinguish the conflict. However, what happened was enough for a conflict within the group. The remains of a hundred were divided. The small group decided to move on on their own. In total, the new team consisted of 14 people. They were joined by the wounded Hugh Glass.

Major Andrew Henry took the lead in the group. He was about to travel to his fort in Yellowstone, so he directed the group up the Grand River. A few days later, the group found themselves at the place where the Grand River forks. It was there that trouble happened with Glass. He wanted to pick up berries and walked further from the camp than he should have. Nearby at this time was a grizzly bear, who had babies. Driven by instinct to protect the young, she attacked Glass.

Everything happened so quickly that the hunter could not grab the gun - he could only defend himself with a knife, but that was not enough. On cries for help, other members of the group rushed, but too late - Glass was already lying on the ground unconscious. The animal was killed. But Glass, in addition to his injury, also received serious wounds with claws - the bear reached the ribs. Everyone was sure that the hunter would soon die. Henry believed that the maximum that poor Hugh could count on was one or two days of torment.

Meanwhile, the threat of a new conflict with the Indians remained. Henry had no other choice - he could not take Glass with him: in the Major's opinion, Hugh was in no way able to move the road, and it was risky for a large group to remain in place. So Henry made a decision. Two volunteers will stay with Glass until he departs to another world and will bury his body on the ground. And then they will catch up with the detachment, which will go forward without delay.

Hugh Glass ("The Survivor") performed by Leonardo DiCaprio

Jim Bridger and John Fitzgerald volunteered. Henry took the people away, and Jim and John prepared a grave for their comrade and began to count the time that separated them from the end of the sad mission. Day passed. Then the second one. Third. Glass clung desperately to life. When the fifth day passed and the volunteers got tired of waiting, Fitzgerald decided that they no longer needed to stay with the dying man. He, like Henry, was sure that Hugh would not survive.

Fitzgerald persuaded Bridger to leave the unfortunate man and leave - the arikara is close. Jim gave in to the exhortations. Leaving, the former comrades took with them everything useful that the dead did not need. Weapons, equipment - all these things hit the road with volunteers. After joining the group, they informed Henry that Glass had rested in the Bose and the job was done. The hunters were wrong - Hugh miraculously came to his senses. And, waking up, he found that he was in a deep forest completely alone, without weapons, crumbs of food and a drop of water.

But with serious wounds inflicted by an angry bear, and a broken leg. But the desire to live turned out to be so strong that he decided to go. From the nearest settlement- Fort Kiowa - Hugh was separated by about 320 km. Everything that happened next is very similar to the story told by Jack London in the story "Love of Life". Probably, it was this love that helped the wounded hunter to overcome the unthinkable distance.

John Fitzgerald played by Tom Hardy

The path ran through wild places, and Glass, thanks to the efforts of his so-called friends, did not have any weapons or food. He could not walk normally, so he crawled most of the road. All this lasted for about two months. After his return, Glass recovered for a long time. However, having recovered, he firmly decided to find the negligent friends and repay them for all the horrors that he had to endure. Hugh went in search of Bridger and Fitzgerald. It's all over ...

Ellipsis - and we put it. There will be no spoilers! Anyone can search the Internet for the ending of this story, but we do not want to spoil the aftertaste of the future film for you. The only thing we are ready to go for is to announce the ending of Hugh's life. After a terrible adventure with a grizzly bear, he lived for another 10 years and died, in general, an almost heroic death: in battle and at the hands of the Indians, who did catch up with him. But this, as they say, is a completely different story.

Film script

Incredible story Hugh Glass has become the basis for works of art more than once. Thus, the American science fiction writer Roger Zelazny, together with his colleague Robert Hausman, wrote the book "Wild Lands". The fate of Glass became one of two in the novel plot lines... The second was dedicated to another researcher, John Coulter, who had to endure a similar mess. And in 1971, director Richard S. Sarafian made a film about Glass with Richard Harris in the title role.

In the early 2000s, Michael Pahnke wrote The Revenant (the film turned into The Returner in preparation for entering the market of the former CIS). The book did not have time to see the light - even at the stage of the manuscript, the producer Akiva Goldsman bought the rights to it. Based on the plot, a script was written for him - Dave Rabe became its author. It happened in 2001, but the work on the project was constantly postponed - this was how it dragged on for nine long years.

The Survivor was filmed in Canada

In 2010, it was decided to redo the script. The company Anonymous Content, which took over the production of the film, assigned the case to Mark L. Smith. A year later, it became known that the finished text would be handed over to Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarrit - he was to bring the project to life. Later, the director commented on the amendments that he made to the original script.

This is how the son of Glass appeared in history from an Indian girl from the Pawnee tribe. In history real hugh this connection was also - even before meeting with Ashley, the hunter was captured by the Pawnee and lived there for a long time, having managed to marry one of the girls of the tribe. According to Gonzalez Iñarritu, the introduction of this character made Hugh's image even deeper and more complex.

Film crew

He turned out to be the fourth and last director who was offered to lead the project "The Returner". Before the Oscar-winning Mexican, the film was offered to Park Chang Wook, John Hillcoat and Jean-François Richet. However, all these bets turned out to be unsuccessful, and only 10 years after the purchase of the rights to the book from the author, the script and the picture had a foreseeable future. In August 2011, Gonzalez Iñarritu signed a contract.

According to the director, the proposal to film the story of Glass came in at the right time. “During that period, I often thought about running away from civilization for a year,” Alejandro said. Looking ahead, let's say that this is what happened - the film crew drove into the wilderness for almost 10 months. By the way, the director was accompanied by an equally stellar operator.

Gonzalez Iñarritu not only took on the project, but also brought it to life!

Critics and moviegoers were very pleased with the news that there will be Emmanuel Lubezky... As an amazing cameraman, he was the one who presented the audience with the mind-blowing films Great Expectations with Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow, Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci, Child of Man with Clive Owen and Julianne Moore, The Tree of Life with Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, and many others.

Lubetzky's works were nominated for Oscars five times, and the operator took two statuettes from the stage of the Kodak Theater. By the way, this happened twice in a row - in 2014, experts awarded his work in the film "Gravity", and in 2015 - "Birdman". By the way, Lubecki also worked on the last film with Gonzalez Iñarritu. So the visual range promises to be spectacular.

Cast

Cast is what viewers care about the most when it comes about a new cinematic project. However, not only them. Actors are one of the first "production issues" that the director undertakes at the beginning of work. Each of the contenders for the main place on the set had their own views on who should embody the title character. If "The Returner" was directed by Park Chang Wook, Glass would most likely be black.

Samuel L. Jackson, Christian Bale and Sean Penn were considered for the role of Hugh Glass. As a result, she went to Leonardo DiCaprio.

The South Korean filmmaker saw the role as Samuel L. Jackson. John Hillcoat was going to take Christian Bale into the picture, and they even managed to start negotiations with the latter. But Gonzalez Iñarritu did not hesitate for a long time - less than a week after the signing of the contract, he named the names of two actors whom he considers as candidates for the main role: Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn. As a result, I settled on the first one.

Leonardo DiCaprio (Hugh Glass)

Leo's figure is the second of two major intrigues in the upcoming film. The first is the very fact of its release. Like any other of the films of the famous Mexican, this one begins to enjoy fame even before it appears on the screen - especially after the acclaimed "Birdman". But where DiCaprio is, there are always disputes, rumors, gossip and predictions. And all about one thing - will there finally be an Oscar, or again, let's say goodbye? They say that the date of the premiere was not chosen by chance.

The release of the film was deliberately shifted towards the end of the year - the picture will only be shown on December 25, and even then it will be released for limited release. The Survivor will enter cinemas in the new year, January 8, 2016. And all supposedly so that critics and the honorary jury would not forget about him before the Oscars. The film is expected to nominate for at least Best of the Year award for Directing, Cinematography and Screenplay.

The Survivor Allows DiCaprio And Tom Hardy To Work Together Again

And, of course, one cannot do without talk about DiCaprio. Already five times Leo has been nominated for an Oscar - and has never been awarded. They make fun of the actor, but he seems to have got used to it and does not pay attention. Although a wave of speculation rises whenever a film with DiCaprio is released. True, this time she is special. Leonardo said that after filming with Gonzalez, Iñarritu is going to rest.

How long the vacation will last, and what the actor is going to do at this time, is still unknown. Anyway, it's too early for him to retire. But who knows when we - and the jury of the competition - will see the actor on the screen again. So the film academy should think about it and not delay the decision for a long time. Leo deserves an award, and he will definitely have it! (Yes, don't argue!) So why keep pulling the cat by the tail?

Gonzalez Iñarritu speaks very warmly of DiCaprio. According to the director, Leo has always been the main contender for the role of Glass. As it turned out, the Mexican has been closely following the actor's work from the moment he first saw him on the screen in the movie What's Eating Gilbert Grape. 19-year-old Leonardo then played a mentally disabled kid. At the same time, DiCaprio was first included in the list of Oscar nominees. Gonzalez Iñarritu says:

"Since then, I have never ceased to be amazed at one thing - how organically Leonardo manages to transform into really cool guys and fragile boys."

Promotional shot with Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass

The director wanted so much to work with DiCaprio that he even postponed the start of filming - Leo was just busy working on "The Wolf of Wall Street". The actor also has warm feelings for the director. Since the "Survivor" was talked about in Hollywood from time to time, he was not a novelty for Leo. DiCaprio had already heard about the project, then read the script, but was in no hurry to accept the offer - he was waiting for a meeting with the director. But then I did not hesitate. The actor admitted:

“I was shocked by Alejandro. He approached the job with great passion. For him, the story of what happened to Hugh is not limited to a desire to repay the offenders. Alejandro deeply understands what drove Glass in his desire to survive. "

Also Leonardo added:

“When choosing projects in which I can participate, I focus primarily on the director. And this film is special in general. It was fundamentally important for him to get into good hands... No matter how strong the script is, only an outstanding director could make a masterpiece out of it. "

For filming, DiCaprio sacrificed his comfort and reputation

When he said this about Gonzalez Iñarritu, DiCaprio had very specific things in mind. The peculiarity of the film is that human speech is rarely heard in it. After surviving an encounter with an angry animal, Glass almost stops talking. And all the semantic load, which in most cases the dialogues take upon themselves, this time is transferred to the emotion and the ability to convey it. Including this, the actor liked the image of Hugh. Leo confessed:

“The film was a real challenge for me. Often my heroes turned out to be terrible talkers. But here everything is different. I have long dreamed of playing a character who is silent. Convey emotion without words. "

The director believes that the actor succeeded in everything. After filming, Iñarritu reported:

“DiCaprio is a terrific pretender and a smart, clear set partner. From a half-glance, he understands everything that the operator and the director want. He speaks body language masterfully - the image turned out to be incredible. "

Shabby and overgrown Leo DiCaprio in The Survivor

For the role of Leo, he had to sacrifice his reputation. There was a period when the actor was accused of not taking care of himself and becoming like a homeless person. Leo let go of his hair and started lush vegetation on his face, which even provoked a small scandal: he appeared in an "inappropriate" form at a charity party dedicated to the protection of the oceans. (As you know, the actor supports this environmental movement and regularly donates sums with a lot of zeros in his favor.)

At the same time, the front pages of the tabloids were full of collages on the theme “just look how it looks like”. Photos of 40-year-old Leo have been compared with those of 78-year-old Jack Nicholson. It later became clear that the actor's unkempt appearance was most likely part of the preparations for the filming of The Survivor. This means that the beard and disheveled hair, which the audience will see in the frame, will be real.

By the way, for the role of Gonzalez, Iñarritu DiCaprio had to refuse Danny Boyle. The director was just getting ready to shoot the film and offered Leo the role of the founder of Apple. But the Mexican and Glass outweighed, and Boyle replaced him with Michael Fassbender.

Tom Hardy (John Fitzgerald)

Tom Hardy is another star on the crew of "The Survivor"

Tom will be filming for the second time with DiCaprio - they already have joint work... The actors were involved in the film "Inception". To appear on set as one of the traitorous volunteers, Hardy also turned down the role. He had the opportunity to star in (an adaptation of one of the DC comics) with David Ayer. As a result, instead of Hardy, the Swede Juel Kinnaman got into the caste.

Will Poulter (Jim Bridger)

Will Poulter is the youngest member of the cast

The second traitor will be portrayed by a young but promising British actor. The 22-year-old boy already has some serious work in his piggy bank. So, in the film "We are the Millers" his partners on the set were Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts and Jason Sudeikis. But most of all he is familiar to the audience as Eustace Harm from The Chronicles of Narnia. The guy has already starred in two parts of the franchise, and after the "Survivor" there should be a third one with his participation -.

Donal Gleeson (Andrew Henry)

Donal Gleason will play the most positive character

Henry - the only one who tried to do everything that was possible for the unfortunate Glass - will be played by the Irishman Gleeson. The actor is familiar to the audience for his role as Bill Weasley in one of the Harry Potter films - "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". He also played Konstantin Levin in the Hollywood film adaptation of Anna Karenina and appeared in Unbroken, where he worked under the direction of Angelina Jolie. Among the most recent works, we note Ex Machina. It was Donal Gleason that the viewer recognized in Caleb - a programmer whom the evil genius Nathan made part of an experiment to study the interaction of man and the machine Ava invented by him.

In addition, the film features actors Brad Carter, Lucas Haas, Christopher Yoner other.

Filming

Gonzalez Iñarritu made the process extremely difficult. He confessed to reporters:

“Every scene we filmed was terribly difficult, both technically and emotionally. I set myself the traps that I now fall into. But I will have to squeeze the maximum out of myself, which I am only capable of. "

Everything turned out to be difficult: place, time and method. To portray the conditions in which Glass had to survive, the Mexican took the group to Canada, to the Rocky Mountains. For almost nine months. These places are harsh and inaccessible - a lot of time had to be spent on the road alone. Gonzalez Iñarritu strove for maximum realism from the frame. He said:

“It's time to confess. We are no longer adventurous. For us, travel is a trip across India with a navigator and a guide. We grind to the point that we complain when the ham in the refrigerator is a little less than necessary, and the water in the tap is slightly cooler than usual. When did you have time? "

Film crew in the bosom of the Rocky Mountains (Canada)

The main goal of the director was to show, in his own words, "what weaklings we have become", to throw the viewer into the abyss of sensations that the discoverers experienced two centuries ago. No green screens or painting - just shooting in nature! Because of this, the group had to go through a lot.

To understand the scale: in the "biography" of filming there is a blizzard, in which the already inhospitable nature of the Canadian mountains was supplemented by a temperature of -35. DiCaprio later joked that after filming with Gonzalez, Iñarritu took warm clothes with him on trips without being reminded: for nine months he got used to dress like that. But they managed to achieve the goal: not only the beard, but also the clicking of teeth in Hugh Glass in the frame is the most real.

At the end of the process, global warming was added to the delights of shooting on an inhospitable winter nature. The fact is that, in order to achieve exceptional believability, the director decided that he would shoot the film in chronological order, from beginning to end, and not make episodes, and then glue them in order. The director said:

“We have literally witnessed warming. The snow melted right before our eyes. All! "

The Survivor has no green screens - only nature

By the way, this is plus 7 million dollars to the originally approved budget of 50 million. The warming threatened the timing of the work on the project: the team did not have time to shoot the ending of the film. I had to urgently look for a new location and move - suitable conditions were found in Argentina. In order to be in time for the premiere, the process was slightly changed. While the team was finishing shooting in the mountains, the studio was already editing the finished material.

The camera work also deserves special attention. Lubetzky decided that he would shoot in natural light. This required a tremendous amount of work from the entire team. In winter, there is very little light in the Rocky Mountains, and sometimes the group only had an hour to work on a stage - after that the sun moved. Therefore, the actors constantly rehearsed, bringing the scenes to the ideal. Several failed takes plus one working day. Gonzalez Iñarritu said:

“We shoot several scenes every day. We grind them like diamonds, which will then make a whole composition. That's how I intended it. "

It looks like this is exactly what happened! After filming, Leo said:

“Viewers will be able to feel like Hugh Glass, look at things through his eyes. The film is truly unique. I'm sure Alejandro will surprise you. The Survivor has tons of unforgettable scenes. "

The Survivor Movie Duplicate Trailer

One of the most sensational films of last year was The Survivor ( The revenant) starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The key scene is considered to be the attack of the bear on the hero. Many believe that in real life the meeting with the beast invariably ends in death. However, the film is based on the true story of Hugh Glass, the trapper who encountered a grizzly in the 19th and survived.

V early XIX century in the USA there was an active hunt for beavers, because at that time, hats made of their fur were popular among Americans and Europeans. Hugh Glass was one such hunter. Despite the fact that this craft was considered profitable, it was fraught with many dangers. Trappers of the 1820s and 30s were considered sullen and able to survive in the harsh conditions of the wild. But the story of Hugh Glass became a legend even among the highlanders themselves.

In 1823, Hugh Glass took part in another fur-mining expedition led by General William Henry Ashley. The group traveled along the Missouri River. Some time later, while in South Dakota, the hunters were attacked by the Arican Indians. This forced the expedition to split in two. The group that Hugh Glass got into set off on their way to the Yellowstone River.

Hugh Glass, ahead of his own for reconnaissance of the area, came across an angry bear. Driven by her cubs' protective instinct, she attacked the hunter. Hearing the screams, the others rushed to the rescue and shot the beast. According to another version, the trapper himself stabbed the bear himself. Hugh Glass was seriously injured: his back was covered with lacerations, the skin on his head was torn, his leg was broken. The satellites were in full confidence that Hugh will not last even until morning. But they nevertheless built a stretcher and carried the comrade for two days.

The hunters hurried so as not to be ambushed by the Indians, but the wounded man slowed their progress very much. Thus, they decided that the two would stay with Hugh and wait until he died, bury him in a Christian way, and then catch up with the rest. John Fitzgerald and Jim Bringer remained.

For the next three days, the hunters waited for the death of their comrade, but he stubbornly refused to die. John and Jim were worried that the others had become very distant from them, and Fitzgerald convinced Bringer to leave Hugh for dead. The men dug a shallow grave, put the wounded man there, took his weapon and went to catch up with their own. There they lied that the hunter had died.

Despite severe injuries, Hugh Glass rallied and began to move towards the nearest settlement - Fort Kiowa on the Missouri River. The man ate berries, roots, insects and snakes. Once a hunter managed to drive off two wolves from a bison cub, which he later ate. Hugh's strength was given by anger and a thirst for revenge on the two who had left him to die.
On the way to Fort Hugh Glass, Indians from a friendly tribe met. They sewed him a bearskin cape on his back and gave him food and weapons.

After six weeks, the hunter reached his destination, where he remained for several more weeks, gaining strength. After Hugh recovered, he set out to find Bridger and Fitzgerald. But the final fight did not happen. At the meeting, Hugh Glass forgave Jim Bridger, since he was still very young. John Fitzgerald at that time had already joined the ranks of the army. To kill a soldier means to sign a death warrant for yourself. Hugh Glass himself died 10 years later during a fight with the Indians on the Yellowstone River.
