Planting gladioli in pots is a very convenient way. Thanks to him, you can always move gladioli to the right place. For example, put it in a gazebo when guests arrive. And if it is difficult to find a well-lit place in the garden, you can follow the sun by moving the pot. The second plus is that here, in the pot, the temperature of the earth will be much higher than in the ground. But it is known that gladioli cannot be planted in cold soil. But here in the Urals we have a very long spring this year. And the soil in the open ground has not yet warmed up to the required +10 degrees. And in the pot she - desired temperature. And one more thing - after flowering, gladioli must leave leaves for the bulbs to ripen. The flower stalks need to be cut off and the leaves left to dry. It's not too pretty. We have to somehow disguise the gladioli in the flowerbed. When planting in a pot, we simply remove it out of sight. Three rules for growing gladioli: 1. When planting, be sure to treat the bulbs against thrips, fertilize them after germination, if fertilizers have not been previously applied to the garden bed, and spray them against thrips at least 2 times during the summer. 2. It is very important to cut off the peduncle when the third flower blooms, then the bulb will ripen; after digging, treat it against bugs and diseases. 3. Storage of the bulbs: refrigerator, but you need to periodically take it out and dry it because there is moisture. At room temperature, treatment with chemicals is necessary; the cellar is also damp. **************************************** ******************** To obtain good harvest you should approach the issue wisely. If you, like me, purchased or saved gladioli bulbs, then now, in May, the earth has already warmed up well and this means that the best time has come. the right time plant them in the ground. Let me remind you that the main condition for this procedure is the soil temperature, that is, it must warm up to at least 10 degrees, and this means at a depth of 10 cm.

In spring, the time for traditional chores begins for all flower growers and gardeners. One of these pleasant chores is planting and growing flowers in the garden, as well as caring for them. And gladioli are no exception.

Like other flowers, majestic and beautiful gladioli constantly need good care and attention. Particularly important correct landing and care in the spring. Although gladioli can be called capricious flowers, growing these plants pays off handsomely.

Getting ready to land

Preparations for planting gladioli can begin approximately 20-15 days before planting. It is best to do this in April. In spring, the soil warms up quite quickly and dries out a little. And the outside temperature is returning to normal.

Gladioli bulbs must be peeled in advance. This is what they advise experienced flower growers. This should be done to make it easier for the children to germinate. This is why peeled tubers appear several days earlier. By clearing the scales from the bulbs, you can at the same time check their condition. If there are signs of any disease, the tubers need to be treated. This can be done completely independently, “armed” with a sharp knife and an antiseptic. But you will have to wait a little while planting such bulbs. It will take about a week for the treated wounds to dry out and heal.

The finished tubers can be laid out on a light windowsill. It is imperative that this place be warm (+22 - +27 C).

In such conditions, gladioli will “come to life” within a month and will delight you with the tubercles that appear on the tubers. Also, before planting, gladioli are treated with a disinfecting solution. Typically used at home water solution with the addition of a small amount of manganese. The resulting liquid should be light pink in color.
There are some relevant tips in the following video.

Transplanting the bulbs into open ground

Gladioli should be planted in open ground in the spring, in early May. But it is worth providing proper care for the flowers, and for this you need to take into account the climatic features of the area in which the planting will take place. For example, in regions with a temperate climate, the first weeks of May are considered the best period for planting tubers.

Having decided to plant gladioli in the garden, you must first choose a “permanent place of residence” for them. It is the choice of the site where planting will take place that will affect the further growth and flowering of plants. It is better for this to be a place in the garden where there is a lot of sunlight and not much wind.

Good soil for growing gladioli is considered to be ordinary black soil, a mixture of sandy loam and loam, with a neutral or slightly acidic environment.

Before planting gladioli in a place you like, the soil will need to be fluffed up. This will help rid the soil of excess moisture. It would be nice if the area for planting gladioli tubers could be dug up and fertilized in the fall. This will make caring for your plants much easier in the future.

For bulbs of different sizes, you will need to provide different planting depths. Eg:

  • bulbs larger than 2 cm in diameter should be placed 5-10 cm into the soil;
  • for medium tubers (diameter from 1 to 3 cm), a depth of 4-7 cm is suitable;
  • Small bulbs, with a diameter of approximately 1 cm, are planted at a depth of 3-5 cm from the surface.

For adult gladioli, it will be better if the tubers are planted at a distance of 15 to 20 cm. It is advisable to place the same distance between the rows. Small gladioli tubers can be planted closer. We offer short video A guide to preparing and planting gladioli tubers.

How to properly care for seedlings

Gladioli are graceful plants that, when planted in spring, produce inflorescences with colorful flowers and sword-shaped leaves. To get healthy and beautiful gladioli, you need to properly organize their care after planting.

Firstly, they should be watered in a timely manner. In spring, the soil is moist enough so you can water the plants as needed. It is advisable to increase the volume of watering during the period when flower stalks will form (from 10 to 15 liters per 1 square meter). This stage can be easily determined by the number of leaves - when there are 3-4 full leaves. Especially a lot of water will be needed for irrigation during the flowering of gladioli. Immediately after each watering, try to slightly loosen the soil and hill up the plants a little.

Secondly, it is important to feed gladioli on time. The first “portion” can be applied as early as 4 and 6-8 weeks after the plants have been planted. Nitrogen fertilizer is suitable. Based on 1 square meter Soil fertilizer will need about 25-30 grams. If the area is rich in nitrogen, then the fertilizer rate should be halved. When the first buds appear, the soil should also be fed. And do not forget that before applying fertilizers, the soil should be watered.

Gladioli are great when spraying leaves with mineral microfertilizers. Very good results spray with solutions of potassium permanganate and boric acid.

Thirdly, it is worth paying a lot of attention to weeding and mulching the soil. A small layer of humus or peat, just 3-5 cm, will help retain moisture and ventilate the soil. In this useful and simple way you can get rid of weeds in a flowerbed, interfering with their growth, and ensure good care.

How to care for adult flowers

Caring for grown-up gladioli is not difficult. The main thing is to monitor the condition of the plants and soil. Just like seedlings, adult flowers need airing of the ground and good watering.

You will definitely need to tie up the plants when they start to grow. Regular pegs are suitable for this. You can do without a garter, simply hilling them up to about 10 cm so that the plants are stable.

When cutting gladioli, try not to cut off the lower leaves. In order for the bulb to continue to develop normally, it will be enough to leave only 4-5 leaves.

Unfortunately, gladioli often suffer from diseases and pests. Therefore, they especially need good care. To prevent diseases, you can use special solutions. As a rule, they are used several times during cultivation.

As you can see, planting and caring for gladioli is not difficult. And when great desire and an excellent understanding of the needs of the plant, you will undoubtedly be able to grow these majestic flowers.

Usually they do not appear in the garden right away, since planting gladioli and caring for them in the open ground raises doubts among novice gardeners. It’s difficult, troublesome, and doesn’t always live up to expectations. There is especially a lot of hassle with bulbs - they need to be dug up every year, stored in certain conditions, treated, vernalized, and children raised. In spring, flowers need to be planted on time and correctly, fed, tied up, and protected from pests. In general, there is a lot of wisdom. But look at the photo, aren’t these noble, long-legged beauties worth it?

The influence of plant biology on agricultural technology

It would seem that he studied in detail how to plant gladioli, did everything according to science, looked after him like little children, but the result was not impressive. Or even if everything worked out as it should in the first or second year, after a while the flowers begin to hurt, become smaller, and degenerate. To prevent this from happening, you must not just blindly follow the recommendations, but understand the biology of the plant.

A peculiarity of corm crops, which includes gladiolus, is a two-year development cycle. In the first year, the bulb forms as a daughter bulb and lays down developmental organs; in the second year, it gives life to a flower and a new corm, and then dies.

During the growing season, development phases are distinguished when certain plant systems are formed more intensively, nutrition and moisture are consumed unequally, and therefore the emphasis in care shifts.

Let's consider the basic rules for growing gladioli in open ground in connection with their biological features. This approach will help you avoid common mistakes.

  1. The value of a planting gladiolus corm is not in size, as many people think, but in age.
The highest quality is considered to be material obtained from tuber buds and which has never produced a flower. This is easy to determine by the absence of a dried peduncle and a small, neat bottom. Such bulbs are called juvenile and produce the largest decorative flower. Further, it will be renewed, but the optimal period of its use is 2–3 years. Anything older will hurt, worsen flowering, and fall out during storage. Conclusion - planting material must be regularly replaced, supplemented, and rejuvenated.
  2. Most favorable for gladiolus early boarding. In the recommendations on when to plant gladioli, you can find information about shifting the timing during the warm period in order to get later flowering, for example, by September. But this contradicts the biology of the flower. At a soil temperature of 4–15⁰ C, the root system develops intensively, the plant becomes powerful, blooms earlier and more abundantly, and promptly forms a large replacement bulb. At a temperature of 15–18⁰ C, the vegetative part (stem, leaves) grows faster, but the roots lag behind, and the gladiolus turns out weaker. Conclusion - to extend flowering, use early, middle and late varieties.
  3. Gladioli cannot be grown in the same place for several years. On the one hand, the soil is depleted, as the same set of minerals and microelements is consumed, and harmonious proportions cannot always be restored with the help of fertilizers. The second negative factor is contamination of the habitat by “targeted” diseases and pests. For the same reason, it is not recommended to plant gladioli after other bulbous plants (tulips, lilies), next to plants with an aggressive root system, for example, peonies. Conclusion - follow crop rotation.
  4. A flower has growth phases when it is most vulnerable to adverse conditions. Gladiolus formed 3–4 leaves. During this period, the roots of the second tier are formed, feeding the daughter bulb, while the old (maternal) roots, which provided the start, gradually die off. At the same time, a peduncle begins to form, drawing nutrients onto itself. There comes a time when sufficient quantity moisture and nutrition are more important than ever. If conditions are unfavorable, new roots develop worse, and late varieties They may not grow back at all, which can lead to oppression and even death of the flower. Conclusion - during this period, regular watering and fertilizing are needed.
  5. Not all varieties of gladioli can develop successfully in regions with a moderately cold climate. You can often hear that after planting gladioli in the ground in the spring, they grew and bloomed beautifully, but after digging the corms turned out to be sick and weak. It's about, most likely about the Dutch, American varieties, the planting material of which was grown in a different climate (warm and humid). Buying similar decorative varieties, be prepared for the fact that you are unlikely to receive your planting material. Conclusion - cultivate Russian varieties; among foreign cultivars, give preference to those adapted to our conditions.
  6. In gladioli agricultural technology, soil mulching plays an important role. The fact is that the second tier of roots, which we talked about a little higher, does not go deep, but develops the upper fertile layer. Their depth is 5–18 cm. Mulching with peat compost, rotted straw, and grass compost prevents overheating and drying out of the soil and improves its aeration. Plants grown in mulched flower beds form powerful inflorescences, increasing the number of buds by 4–5, bloom longer, suffer less disease, and produce 20–25% more bulbs. Conclusion - do not ignore this agricultural technique.

Planting gladioli in the ground

Prepare a sleigh in the summer and a cart in the winter - this folk wisdom also works in the case of the hero of our article. Before we figure out how to plant gladioli in the spring, how and when to treat the bulbs, let’s take care of the future flower bed, because it needs to be prepared in the fall.

Site selection and soil preparation

When choosing a location for a future flower garden, consider the following points.

  • Gladiolus is a flower of the South African prairies; it loves light and solar energy. The further north you live, the more scrupulously you fulfill this requirement. In the southern regions, early varieties do well in shade, but it’s better not to take risks with late ones.
  • Corms do not tolerate soaking, they begin to rot and become moldy. If there is a risk of flooding the garden with groundwater, choose a place on a hill for planting flowers; drainage may be needed in the spring.
  • Tall peduncles can bend and break when exposed to wind. Consider the wind rose for your region and provide a natural barrier in the path of at least the most powerful and destructive of them.

If you have decided on the place, let's start autumn preparation soil. The first step is to dig deep so that by spring the earth is saturated with moisture and fluffed up.

Next, we move on to improving its quality. We proceed from the fact that gladioli prefer a neutral or slightly acidic reaction of the soil environment, i.e. Alkaline soil will have to be acidified, and acidic soil will have to be alkalized. An acidic environment is more dangerous, since plants in it suffer from fusarium. The negative reaction is neutralized with the help of lime and dolomite flour, which is added during digging. Approximate consumption rates are 150–200 g/m².

For growing gladioli in open ground, the optimal soil structure is fertile black soil or loam. You can improve the composition of sandy soil using peat compost, humus; it will help loosen the clay river sand, peat. Please note that the last component acidifies the earth.

To enrich the soil, fertilizers are applied during autumn digging:

  • compost, preferably vegetable compost, because manure accumulates fungal diseases– 15–20 kg/m²;
  • granulated superphosphate – 100 g/m²;
  • potassium chloride – 30–40 g/m².

Instead of various mineral fertilizers, you can take complex fertilizers, such as nitroammophoska, nitrophoska.

Pre-planting preparation of corms

The question of how to prepare gladioli for planting in the spring is the most common question among beginning gardeners. The algorithm of actions is as follows.

  1. About a month before planting, the stored bulbs are inspected. They are cleaned of dry covering scales, and missing planting material is discarded. If the damage is minor, mold and rot are scraped off and cut out. The wound is disinfected with brilliant green or crushed with wood, activated carbon.
  2. The corms are vernalized. The principle is the same as for sprouting potatoes. The bulbs are laid out in one row on paper, sawdust (no matter) bottom down and left in a warm (20–25⁰ C), bright place, for example, on a cabinet in the kitchen.

Important! Under no circumstances should planting material be wetted during vernalization. Moisture stimulates the formation of roots, and it is important for us that the apical bud wakes up. A properly vernalized tuber has a small sprout and root primordia (tubercles) around the circumference of the bottom.

  3. Immediately before planting in the ground, the bulbs are pickled and soaked in stimulating solutions.

The purpose of these measures is to disinfect planting material and increase its resistance to negative factors of the soil environment, diseases, and pests. What is used and how – we will give examples.

  • Soak for several hours in a weak solution of potassium permanganate, fungicidal drugs - this is against fungal infections. It is good if the drug used is also active against thrips.
  • Heat treatment is carried out. The bulbs are immersed in water at a temperature of +54⁰ C for 15 minutes and then cooled.
  • Soak in a solution of microelements and stimulants (can be mixed with a fungicide). Experts note an improvement in flower decorativeness after using the biostimulator epin.

Landing dates

When to plant gladioli in the ground depends on the climate zone, adjusted for the weather conditions of a particular year. It is most correct to determine them by the soil temperature at a depth of 10–15 cm - optimally 9–10⁰ C. In colder soil, the bulbs will still not germinate, they will begin to hurt, and they may even rot.

In the middle zone, gladioli are planted from mid-April to May 10. In the southern regions (Krasnodar Territory, Rostov Region) - 2-3 weeks earlier.

The popular marker for planting corms is birch. When the leaves of this tree grow to the size of a nickel, you can plant gladioli. By the way, the same sign also works with planting potatoes.

You can achieve early flowering of the crop using sprouted bulbs. The second option is earlier landing. What is needed for this?

The area intended for a flower garden is mulched with peat compost in the fall, and covered with film in March. Under the influence of the spring sun, the soil will warm up to the desired temperature 1–1.5 weeks faster.

Planting scheme

Gladioli can be planted in different ways - this does not affect the development of the plant or the onset of phenological phases. What planting schemes are there?

  • 20x20 cm - an option for amateur gardeners. The result is a fairly dense flower bed, with sufficient feeding area for each flower.
  • 20x30 cm - a larger distance allows you to grow large specimens for cutting.
  • 20x15 cm - a dense planting pattern is practiced if you need to propagate corms. Peduncles are cut before blooming.

An important question is how to plant gladioli so that they do not fall. The best option is a bouquet or curtain so that they support each other. In addition, the planting depth affects the stability of plants - the shallower it is, the higher the likelihood of lodging and bending of the stems.

Important! Plant corms of approximately the same size together so that strong plants do not suppress weak ones. When decorating a flower bed of varieties of different heights, plant tall gladioli in the center or on the north side, and the lowest ones on the edges or on the south side. Everyone should get their share of the sun.

Planting depth

Another growing secret is related to the depth at which gladioli are planted. According to generally accepted rule for bulbous crops it is determined based on the height, for gladiolus - based on the diameter of the corm.

If the soil is loose and light, plant large planting material to a depth of 4 diameters - this is, roughly speaking, the bayonet of a shovel. In loams, the depth can be reduced to 3 diameters, but not less. The same rule works with tubers.

Dig the grooves in advance. Sprinkle the bottom with a layer of sand (1–1.5 cm); if you haven’t fertilized it since the fall, add vegetable compost and mineral fertilizers. Place the corms, cover them a little, water them, and after soaking, add the rest of the soil.

Flower care

Agricultural technology for growing gladioli in open ground includes the following elements of care - watering, mulching, fertilizing, tying, spraying against diseases and pests.

Watering and mulching

The first tier of gladiolus roots penetrates to a depth of 40–45 cm, providing the shoot with moisture and nutrition. From the moment roots form on a young bulb, you need to ensure that the surface layer of soil is moist. In June, it is enough to water the seedlings once a week at the rate of 2 buckets/m². The need for moisture increases during the period of budding, flowering, and hotter weather - at the same rate, the frequency of watering is increased to 2-3 times a week.

Water the plants at the roots, being careful not to get them on the leaves, with water heated during the day in the sun. Do not forget to loosen the soil after the top layer has dried.

Mulching will help preserve moisture and soil structure - covering the root zone with a layer of peat, compost, grass at least 5 cm thick. Mulch, in addition to retaining moisture, nourishes the plant useful substances, which are released as organic matter decomposes.

Feeding

Gladioli are usually fed three times a season.

  1. At the seedling stage (2–4 leaves), nitrogen fertilizing is given. Among organic fertilizers, flowers respond well to a solution of dry chicken manure (1:15), horse manure (1:7). But it’s better not to offer mullein. Nitrogen fertilizers take 25–30 g/m².
  2. The second feeding needs to be complex, so that in addition to nitrogen, it contains potassium and phosphorus. It is done in a phase of 5–6 sheets. Dose – 50–60 g/m².
  3. The budding phase is the time for the third feeding. At this time, the plant needs phosphorus and potassium. You can use special complexes for flowering or superphosphate (30–40 g/m²) and potassium chloride (15–20 g/m²).

Spraying, garter

When growing gladioli in open ground, you need to take care of their protection from any misfortune. Sometimes it is enough to treat the corms before planting. But if there is a whitefly on the site, it will not let it go. Any insecticide can be used against it.

Another common problem garden flower– thrips. If yellow spots or dry bald spots appear on the leaves, urgently spray the plants with insecticides with an acarcidal effect (karbofos, metafos, etc.)

Tall and unstable stems are tied up. To do this, use a strong coarse mesh - it is stretched over the seedlings before forcing the flower stalks, and as they grow, they are passed into the cells. The second option is individual pegs or special supports (as for orchids).

Gladiolus is a cutting crop. As soon as the first flower has opened, the arrow can be sent to the vase, where it will bloom until the last bud. This is also beneficial for the corms, as they have more time to accumulate nutrients and ripening.

Reproduction of gladioli

As already mentioned, although the bulb is renewed annually, it ages, so you need to learn to renew the planting material. You can grow juvenile corms from children.

Planting tubers

For propagation, when digging, the largest tubers with a diameter of at least 1.5 cm are selected. They are stored together with the bulbs.

Before planting baby gladioli in the ground in the spring, they are cleared of their thick “shirt” and disinfected. They do it like this. Place the babies in a gauze bag and place them in a solution of phytosporin with microelements and a growth stimulator for several hours, up to half a day. The tubers need air, so take a little liquid so that it barely covers them.

Children are sown separately from the corms on well-lit, fertile ridges using a belt method with a row spacing in the grooves of 5–6 cm. The planting depth of calibrated corms (ø2–2.5 cm) is at least 5–7 cm. The furrow is shed generously with water, and dry mulch is applied on top earth or peat.

The plants are cared for in the same way as regular gladioli. If a large baby throws out an inflorescence, it needs to be broken off.

Propagation by seeds

Do you want to start breeding a garden beauty? We'll tell you how to grow gladioli from seeds.

Seeds are sown from mid-March in peat pots or tablets, paper cups to a depth of 1–1.5 cm. Seedlings are transferred to open ground with the onset of stable heat. Moreover, they do not replant, but dig in along with the pot. They take care of them like children’s crops. At favorable conditions by the end of the season, each seedling will grow many tubers. Calibrated babies can be dropped off next spring. Typically, gladioli grown from seeds bloom within 3–4 years.

Gladioli inflorescences stand in a vase for 10-15 days, gradually opening bud after bud. It is necessary to make a new cut of the stem under water and place it in water until the first flowers appear. The bouquet lasts longer in a cool room away from direct sunlight. You can throw coal or a silver object into the water. The literature provides advice on adding pine concentrate (a teaspoon per liter), sugar (50 g per liter) to the water in a vase. ammonia, borax, table salt.

Corms are planted when the ground warms up to 8-10 degrees to a depth of 20 cm, i.e. from mid-April to mid-May. During the first two weeks, the corms take root and spring frosts they won't be harmed. It’s a good idea to cover the plantings with film until the temperature remains above zero. The planting depth depends on the size of the bulbs and the condition of the soil. The larger the bulb, the deeper it is planted (range 7 - 15 cm). On heavy soil, the planting depth decreases, on very loose soil it increases. The distance between the corms also depends on their size (6-15 cm in a row, 20-25 cm between rows). It is better to plant small and large corms on separate ridges. if for some reason this is not possible, then the small ones should be planted on the south side.

Choosing a landing site

Gladioli are bred by planting corms and their children. In advance, in an exceptionally sunny place, without drafts, prepare the soil: dig it, loosen it. Planting should begin at the end of April, having prepared the plant bulbs two weeks before - clean upper layers scales and treat with warm water. 1-2 hours before planting, the corms are soaked in a solution of potassium permanganate. When planting, gladiolus corms should be buried 10 cm in the soil, and the distance between the bulbs should be 15 cm.

The area that warms up normally is dug up just before planting the bulbs. If the place is dry, then it is better to dig up in the fall so that the moisture is preserved and just loosen the soil a little before planting.

In order for the plant to grow quickly, experienced gardeners give advice on how to plant gladioli bulbs in sawdust. It is recommended to do this in early April so that the tubers have sprouted enough to be transplanted into open ground.
The bulb that bears beautiful inflorescences lives on average 3-4 years, after which it loses its viability and becomes large and flat. By buying large flat bulbs with a large bottom, you don’t have to wonder how to properly plant gladioli bulbs in the spring, since they still won’t give color.

Blooming gladiolus is a gorgeous flower in itself and occasionally needs accompaniment. But given that gladiolus does not bloom for very long, although it is bright, you need to choose a good environment for it that will bloom before and after these flowers. In spring, bulbous flowers, such as daffodils and tulips, will cope well with this task. Afterwards you can change them herbaceous peonies, and when the gladioli fade, the role of garden decoration will pass to paniculate hydrangea.

Preparing to plant gladiolus

Gladioli tolerate cold well, but they should be planted in sufficiently warm soil at approximately +8-10 degrees at a depth of 10 centimeters. This time comes around the 20th of April in the middle zone. The bed should be dug up in advance and filled with already rotted compost, not forgetting that fresh manure cannot be used. To compensate for the lack of organic matter, it is better to use mineral fertilizers, introduced during the season.

Those bulbs that during this time did not produce either sprouts or roots can be thrown away.

Harvesting corms

Planting care

Gladioli are very demanding of light, moisture, loose and nutritious soil. The area with gladioli should be illuminated all day. Shading in the morning will cause flowers to appear 15-20 days later, and if shaded from the south they may not bloom at all. With poor air circulation, plants become more sick. You cannot plant gladioli in one place for several years in a row. In an unsuccessfully chosen area, gladioli will not only bloom poorly, but will also not produce a full-fledged corm.

Some information about the children

  • These are moisture-loving plants. With a lack of watering and lack of sufficient sunlight, they may not bloom at all. It is also necessary to take care of moderate fertilization of gladiolus at different periods of growth. Flowering can last from two to four weeks. For the winter, gladiolus corms are dug up and stored in a place with moderate temperatures.
  • It is not recommended to plant gladioli in areas where there were previously root crops or aster. But after vegetables and legumes, they are welcome there; they will not require special care.
  • A week before planting in the ground, the bulbs should be placed in a box or box, bottom down, and sprinkled with well-moistened sawdust. This will provoke rapid growth of roots. After they hatch, the holes are prepared, although many lovers of these flowers make deep furrows for planting.
  • You should also be suspicious of small onions, which are affectionately called “girls,” as they appear when the plant is poorly thinned or due to improper growing technology. They are cheap, but they will not bloom.

You should not plant tall dahlias with gladioli. These flowers will compete with each other. But since plants bloom at different times, you can choose low-colored dahlias that will go well with large-colored gladioli.

How to plant gladiolus

Whether corms affected by the disease were found or not, for prevention before planting it is better to treat them with a solution of foundationazole for 30 minutes. Or you can at least use potassium permanganate.

Usually gladioli are planted in large “bouquets” (about 8-10 bulbs side by side). If the rose is the queen of flowers, then the gladiolus is undoubtedly their king. This charm, grace and splendor, bright colors will not leave anyone indifferent. And not a single flower can compete with it in beauty and variety of shapes, in a range of colors that includes all colors from white to black.

It is important to correctly determine the cleaning time. Replacement corms ripen under normal conditions approximately 4 weeks after the end of flowering or cutting of the inflorescence. They should not be dug up before this date. On the other hand, practical experience shows that the longer the corms remain in the ground, the greater the likelihood that the bulbs will become diseased. As a rule, our autumn is characterized by cold, damp weather and a large daily temperature difference, which contributes to the outbreak of fungal diseases. For these reasons, the cleaning is extended over a month - from mid-September to mid-October. First of all, the corms of the early and least resistant to fungal diseases(blue, lilac, purple) varieties. You need to dig up plants with a pitchfork or shovel. Shake off the soil (or wash the corms if they are very dirty), trim the roots and stem, leaving a stump of 1 cm.

Caring for gladioli includes the usual activities: watering, weeding, loosening, fertilizing. Gladioli are watered 1-2 times a week (depending on the weather) abundantly, 10-20 liters per sq.m., it is better to use heated rain or river water. After each watering or rain, the plantings are loosened. It is recommended to water the plantings before 17:00 so that the foliage is dry by night. The amount of fertilizing depends on weather conditions, soil fertility, etc. Usually the following scheme is recommended:

Planting material

Viral and fungal diseases(such as fusarium, dry rot, gray rot, scab) can affect corms and top part gladiolus with improper care, lack of preventive spraying and improper location and care

  • Planting takes place at the end of April and lasts until mid-May, but one should not forget about weather conditions. Having dug a furrow, it is advisable to shed it with a solution of “phytosporin”, it will protect the plant from the most common diseases. Approximately two centimeters of river sand or sphagnum moss are placed on the bottom; it prevents rot and retains moisture well, preventing it from drying out in the heat. Large bulbs should be buried by 10–15 cm, small ones by 8–10 cm. If plants are planted in rows, the distance between them is at least 20 cm.
  • Mineral fertilizers and sand placed in the holes in small quantities will help to avoid additional feeding in the summer and will free you from unnecessary watering. And if you plant at intervals of 10 days (until the end of May), you can admire the blooming gladiolus until the end of summer.
  • Good planting material is tall bulbs with well-developed lateral buds that have bloomed at least once.

Usually gladioli are planted in large “bouquets” (about 8-10 bulbs side by side), since single flowers do not look so impressive. However, you need to take into account the nuances that affect the overall appearance.

Trenches are organized in the garden bed:

Before planting, the children are also freed from dense scales, and then they are pickled in a fungicide solution for about 20 minutes, but the concentration of the solution should be halved. Such preventive measures will save the plant from small pests and pathogens.

It's interesting that in Ancient Rome There was a separate legend about the origin of this flower. According to the Romans, there lived two devoted friends who were captured by enemies. They were turned into gladiators and forced to fight against each other, promising freedom to the winner. The friends refused and were executed. But when their bodies touched the ground, tall and beautiful flowers grew from the hilts of their swords.

The baby is separated immediately, the mother corm can also be separated on the day of harvesting, but this can also be done a week after digging. when the corky layer is formed. During drying and storage, the corms lose most of their moisture through the bottom. Therefore, in small and immature specimens, the cut roots are not removed. Then the corms are dried for 2 weeks at a temperature of 35-40 degrees and another 2*3 weeks at room temperature. You can dry the corms at room temperature. but then the drying time is extended to 2 months. Experts believe that it is better to over-dry the planting material than to under-dry it, since poorly dried bulbs rot even under favorable storage conditions. first fertilizing with nitrogen when the second true leaf appears;

You need to choose both the variety and the corms. For the northern regions, it is better to choose early and mid-early varieties; in the south, you can afford late ones. It is important to know the origin of the variety. Most North American varieties grow poorly in our conditions, get sick, often die and do not produce full flowers.

How to plant gladioli bulbs correctly?

Really preparing the bulbs for planting begins at the end of autumn, when it is recommended to disinfect them before drying.

For example, you need to take into account color combinations It is better not to plant small-flowered and large-flowered varieties next to each other, since the former will be completely lost against the background of their relatives.

Selecting a location

For large corms the depth should be 15 cm;

Healthy children have a clean surface, without damage or stains. The diameter is approximately 4-5 mm or slightly more.

It so happened that gladioli in floristry symbolize fidelity, nobility, memory and friendship.

Storage of corms

Selection of planting material

second feeding during the formation of a flower bud (end of growth of the third leaf) nitrogen + phosphorus + potassium;

The same applies to varieties bred in Ukraine. Start with unpretentious varieties. It is better to purchase corms grown in your area or in a similar climate. Examine them carefully and discard any that are sick. The best corms are large juvenile ones that have never bloomed. They have a cylindrical shape and a small bottom.

And here are these gladioli during flowering: https://youtu.be/PISojemGob4

First you need to properly prepare the planting material.

The most dangerous pests for gladiolus are slugs. They eat its leaves and gnaw through the tubers, which can completely destroy a beautiful and healthy flower. In order to protect flowers from their invasion, it is recommended to sprinkle the ground around with coarse salt or mustard.

Preparing bulbs for planting

If there is a threat of infection of the area with thrips, then you should keep the corms in a solution of 0.2-0.3% karbofos for about 30 minutes. If there is no such threat, then to increase resistance to fungal and bacterial diseases, it is enough to immerse the bulbs in the solution for a couple of hours potassium permanganate (2 g per 1 liter of water) or garlic infusion (100 g per 3 liters).

According to legend, gladioli grew from the swords of two friends who were executed when they refused to fight against each other in gladiator fights. From the time of ancient world this flower is a symbol of pure friendship.

medium - 7-9 cm;

If there are a lot of children and there is absolutely no time to clean them, then before planting you can simply soften the hard cover. To do this, you need to soak them in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for ten to twelve hours or use a 1% soda solution for 1-2 days. After this, the shell of the babies will become soft, so it will not interfere with germination.

Planting gladioli bulbs

Planting material is recommended to be stored until planting at a temperature of 4-7 degrees and a humidity of 80%. At home, the storage place is vegetable boxes or the bottom shelf of the refrigerator, a niche under the window, or a vegetable container. At sub-zero temperatures, the corms will freeze, at high temperatures in a dry room they will dry out, and at high temperatures in a humid room they will germinate prematurely. The corms are laid out by variety in paper or fabric bags. Don't waste your time on this! If you store the corms, then in the spring you will choose the largest corms for planting, and in August you will assure your neighbors. What about your gladioli, last year there were this and that, but this year they are all the same dirty beige color.

the third, when the inflorescence appears, potassium + phosphorus;

Old flat corms with a large bottom are poor planting material; they may not germinate at all or die in the fall. You should not purchase small young corms either - they will have to be grown for a year, not allowing flowering, that is, out of the 4-5 years of a corm’s life, it will produce a full-fledged flower only 2-3 times. Small young corms usually produce a spike in September, and the flower will be smaller and shorter than that from a large corm. But the main thing is that after flowering the replacement corm will not have time to grow.

Little secrets of planting gladioli

When storing gladioli in a warm place, virtually no care or preparation is required, all you need is good lighting, for the formation of healthy and strong shoots. But it is necessary to inspect the bulbs for the presence of rot, scab and thrips.

Gladiolus children - 5 cm.

Diseases and pests

It should be noted that a large plant with only one root tubercle will not grow into a very strong plant, compared to a small plant with three tubercles.

The word gladiolus itself means “sharp sword” in Latin. Surely this is a reference to the pointed top of the flower, reminiscent of the shape of a spike. Gladiolus belongs to the iris family and includes 200 wild species. Breeding achievements in working with gladioli have reached great heights that can satisfy any, even the most demanding, gardener.

And the secret is simple. Different varieties have different reproduction rates, and they bloom in different times, one managed to grow a large replacement corm, but the other did not. And most often, the largest and healthiest corms end up in less decorative varieties. So, if you want to maintain a collection, then you will have to plant and store corms by variety. Several times during the winter it is necessary to check the condition of the planting material and throw out the diseased ones. You can put cut garlic cloves in bags with corms.

The fourth feeding at the beginning of flowering is potassium + phosphorus;

Digging up the bulbs

Large corms grown in countries with a tropical climate do not adapt well to our conditions. In warm summers they produce normal flowering. but then they quickly become decrepit and die. In damp, cold summers they may die immediately after planting.

Preparing the soil for gladioli.

The bulbs are cleaned of scales and carefully examined. If thrips are found when examining the bulbs, you should sprinkle them with any cockroach powder; if the treatment was a liquid solution, then you will need to dry the bulbs. The consequences of thrips are very unpleasant, this is damage to the leaves and bulbs, and the worst thing is that the bud itself will be very ugly.

If there are children or pets in the area, it is better not to use toxic substances, but to set up traps. To do this, bowls of water are placed near the flowers, where the pests crawl in to drink, but can no longer get out.

If there are any, then carefully cut them out, and grease the incised area with brilliant green or sprinkle with crushed activated carbon. Soft and rotten bulbs should be thrown away.

Since these flowers can grow for 3-4 years in one place, and some species - up to 7 years, it is better to find out in advance about how to properly plant gladioli bulbs and what planting location will be optimal for them.

If the soil is light and strongly settles after watering, then large corms can be buried in the soil up to 20 cm. It is better to pour a 2 cm layer of coarse sand at the bottom of the trench. Sprinkle the bulbs on top with wood ash, cover them with sand, water them with a solution of warm potassium permanganate and cover them with earth.

Rotten parts can be cut off with peace of mind. Half is not worse than a whole bulb, and will also delight you with flowering. But you should recognize where the rot is and where the scab is. The scab looks like a compaction, it gives in if you pick at it a little.

To protect flowers from fusarium and rot, it is recommended to plant calendula or marigolds around the flower bed.

In order for the flowers to grow quickly, experienced gardeners keep their tubers for 13-15 hours in a solution of tree resin (800 g diluted in 10 liters of water). After this, it is recommended to place the corms on the windowsill on the sunny side so that they take root.

Gladioli love a lot of light, but do not tolerate drafts well, so the best option will become sunny side area protected from the wind. Strong wind can easily break flower stems due to the high windage of their inflorescences.

Growing gladioli

The use of sand is not a necessary condition, but this technique makes it possible to improve the composition of heavy soils and protect the corms from diseases. In the fall, this makes it easy to remove the corms from the ground along with the babies. The distance between the bulbs depends on the size. Between large ones it should be 10-15 cm, medium ones - no more than 10 cm, between gladiolus children - 3-7 cm. It is better to leave about 20-25 cm between rows.

Gladiolus diseases

Gladioli reproduce vegetatively. Every year, the mother corm produces one or more replacement corms and many tubers (>children). Replacement corms are a year older than the mother corm, so they can be used for no more than 4-5 years. To rejuvenate the planting material, the child must be planted annually.

You can use mineral and organic fertilizers. except fresh manure. The last feeding should be no later than a month before digging.
It is recommended to grow corms - our summer is short. A month before planting, the corms are removed from storage carefully. so as not to break off the emerging sprouts, they are cleaned of old scales and laid out in one layer in boxes, drawers, or simply on the windowsill.

In principle, scab does not cause any harm to the bulb; it does not affect the growth and development of gladiolus; it’s just that the appearance of the bulb itself is not very attractive. Its appearance is associated with heavy clay soils. As for rot, everything is more serious here. If you do not remove it, the mother bulb will quickly die, and the new one from it will already be infected. You can’t even dream about children and flowering gladioli, and it is also possible that there will be an infection near growing gladioli.

To know how to plant gladioli bulbs, you need to understand how to dig them. Once the plants have finished flowering, the stems must be cut off to form a bulb. At the beginning of October, bulbs are dug up to plant them on next year. Before this, you should not water for 10 days. The leaves of the dug up bulb are cut off, and the bulb itself is wiped off the ground with your hands. All planting material is stored in the cellar until next spring.
Before planting gladioli bulbs in the spring, you should check how warm the soil is. Perfect option, when the earth at a depth of 10 cm has warmed up to +10 degrees, but if it was not possible to plant in the spring, it is recommended to do this before the first half of June, otherwise they will not be able to form a strong corm before the onset of autumn.

It is also important that the flowerbed is located in a flood-free area. Stagnant water has a bad effect on plant bulbs. You should also make high raised beds if groundwater located too close to the surface. At the same time, it is necessary to ensure regular watering, especially in dry summers.

Homemade gladioli grown in a pot

To speed up the growth of seedlings, it is better to cover the beds with film, creating a tunnel of thick wire. During frosts, the seedlings are covered or covered with earth. After planting and germination of gladioli, the bed is mulched, for example, with humus in a layer of 5-7 cm. Mulch will help protect the surface from overheating, hypothermia, drying out, will suppress the germination of weeds and will serve as an additional feeding.

When and how to plant gladioli.

So why not place such an amazing flower on your site? To do this, you need to try a little to collect information on how to grow gladioli correctly.

The baby is planted earlier than the adult corms. If there are many children of the desired variety, then use the largest one. Before planting, the baby must be carefully cleaned of scales. The operation is labor-intensive, but it pays off. Unpeeled baby germinates within 60 days, cleaned within 7-14. If a lot of babies are sown, then it is recommended to do the following instead of manual cleaning: scatter the babies on hard surface and roll the bottle over it. The scales will crack, germination will be higher. To increase germination, before planting, the baby is soaked in a solution of growth stimulants (humate microelements, thiourea, epine). It is necessary to soak not in water, otherwise baby, but in a damp cloth or sand.
Cutting inflorescences

The place should be warm, sunny and dry - so that the sprouts grow and roots do not form. During cleaning, diseased corms are discarded. If the damaged area is small, it can be cut off and the wound treated with brilliant green. After cleaning, you can pickle it in a weak warm solution of potassium permanganate (2 g per 10 liters of water) with the addition of microelements, and then spread it out for vernalization. Vernalization brings the flowering period closer by 2 weeks.
This video, including the audio track, is intellectual property author. Any copying, in whole or in part, and broadcast on other resources or media under any pretext is prohibited by the author.

If the gladioli were stored at a low temperature, for example, in the refrigerator, then you will need to not only inspect and clean the scales. Warming up and germination will be required; if you skip it and plant it right away, flowering will be much later, and the babies will be small.

Gladiolus (lat.Gladiolus) is a flower beloved by all gardeners. The varieties are very diverse. Gladiolus leaves are xiphoid, inflorescences are one-sided arrow-shaped. Large-flowered plants are the most popular among summer residents. Flower petals can be smooth or corrugated. The colors are varied, the most common being red, orange, pink, yellow and white. There are also two-color ones: white and pink. Gladiolus is a bulbous plant. The bulbs are planted in the spring in April-May and dug up in the fall. The bulbs are cleaned of soil and stored in a cool, ventilated area. Grown mainly for cutting. It is advisable to tie the flower stalks so that they do not break. Flowering time is from late July to September. Cold-resistant species are dug up at the end of October.

The planting hole is made with a depth equal to triple the height of the bulb. Most often it is from 7-15 cm. The distance between the holes is 30-35 cm, and for better growth, experienced gardeners advise planting in the first row low varieties, and behind them - taller ones.

In terms of its composition, the ideal soil for gladiolus is considered to be a slightly acidic environment. On acidic soils it does not develop at all, and on alkaline conditions it often gets sick. Therefore, before wondering how to plant gladioli bulbs, it is better to check the PH of the soil.
Gladiolus is beautiful perennial, which, however, cannot winter in the open ground. That is why it is cultivated in our country as annual plant. For middle latitudes, it is better to use varieties with medium and early flowering dates, since in unfavorable weather the later ones may be somewhat late in flowering and ripening.

First you need to prepare a place for growing. It should be fairly sunny, protected from piercing, strong winds. Waterlogged low-lying areas should be avoided.

Preparation of corms begins 15-20 days in advance. First, they must be cleaned of covering scales and carefully examined for damage by disease or pests. A good and healthy corm has a dense and shiny surface; there are also already budding buds and root rudiments. It is better to throw away bulbs that are dried out, damaged by ulcers, or covered with mold. If they have small dark brown and shiny spots of fusarium or scab, then they can be treated. This is done as follows: carefully cut off the affected area with a knife and lubricate the wound with brilliant green. Even before planting, the cut will be delayed.
In a bed prepared in the fall, rows are made with a depth of 5-6 cm, the bottom of the furrow is compacted and steep river sand is poured in a layer of 1.5-2 cm. The tubers are distributed over the sand at a distance of 5-6 cm from each other, sprinkled with a small layer of sand and sealed earth. The surface of the ridge is compacted. The distance between rows is 25-35 cm, depending on the variety. You can cover the crops with film.

Large-flowered and giant varieties require garters to stakes or ropes stretched along the rows, otherwise the ears will bend.
Soil preparation

Gladiolus is one of the most favorite flowers of summer residents and it is quite understandable that summer residents want to get flowering as early as possible.
Therefore, about a month before planting, the tubers are taken out of the cold and left in a warm place. You should not place it near radiators or heaters, as there is a chance that the bulbs will dry out. As soon as the first shoots appear on the gladioli, you will need to move them to a well-lit place.

Since gladioli love light, this means that you need to find a fairly sunny place on the site. Shady areas are undesirable because growth and flowering will be slow. You cannot plant in areas where water stagnation is possible; ideally, choose areas that are slightly inclined to the south, so that excess water will not stagnate.
This will protect large flowers from possible strong gusts of wind. To understand which side to plant the gladiolus bulb, you should determine where its root base is. It is recommended to pour a little sand and 1/3 of mineral fertilizers directly into the hole, then pour in warm water, stick the tuber in and sprinkle with soil.
It can be difficult for an inexperienced gardener to decide on the choice and purchase of gladiolus bulbs, so it is better to deal with proven and reliable suppliers and gardening farms.

The most suitable soil is loose, moisture-absorbing, loose, but not heavy.

In order to get large corms from children in one season, you need to constantly care for the crops. A.N. Gromov in the book gives detailed instructions on caring for young plants. I recommend that everyone who wants to learn how to grow gladioli read it, especially since it was published recently - in 2202, so it is not a bibliographic rarity. Andrei Nikolaevich advises starting fertilizing with the development of the second true leaf. and before that, treat with Epin. The first feeding is nitrogen + potassium (urea 20 g/sq. m and potassium sulfate 25 g/sq. m). It is good to combine mineral fertilizers with organic fertilizing with bird droppings. It is better to fertilize young plants more often (every 5-6 days); every 10-12 days the plants are sprayed with epin. need to keep an eye on that. Keep the soil moist and do not allow it to dry out. Starting from August, it is worth increasing the share of potash and phosphorus fertilizers. Sowing children in warm weather can be continued in September and completed 10-12 days before digging.

You need to cut the inflorescences correctly. You cannot cut off the peduncle, leaving part of the stem bare. not covered with leaves, you should try to keep the maximum number of leaves on the stem. Try to learn this cutting technique: use a sharp knife to pierce the stem through the leaves required height, carefully twist the stem from side to side and pull it out. In this case, the leaves only receive a cut. It is better to cut gladioli, like other flowers, early in the morning or after sunset.
