EXPERIMENT with dishwasher tablets: How it was

This experiment turned out to be the longest and most challenging eco-friendly household chemical test we have done so far.

It all started with Ecover tablets, the most widespread eco-friendly brand of household chemicals in Moscow. Once I already used them, but my memory left only a vague sensation of annoyance. This time, somewhere on a half-pack of consumed pills, I reluctantly noted that there is more waste in washing dishes (remnants of small particles of dried food, tea plaque) in comparison with traditional pills. I refused to focus my attention on the negative, when, suddenly, I decided to examine the dishes in daylight (which is not easy to do in December): stains and a small white coating were found on the glasses.

OK, this is all our hard water, I thought, but I bought tablets from the German brand Sodasan, which is very nice to me. Looking at the glasses after “Sodasan”, I was horrified: they turned from transparent to opaque. Admire:

After "Sodasan" glassware had to be washed by hand, I will not even talk about the other qualities of these tablets - such a powerful white coating had already buried them.

Swearing quietly, I bought Almawin tablets - another representative German brand of safe household chemicals. I must say right away: the results of "Almavin" comforted me a little: stains and white bloom on the glass were still noticeable, but did not make the glasses glaringly frosted. Nevertheless, the Almavin tablets crumbled unpleasantly in the hands and nevertheless periodically left traces of food on the dishes.

So, having tested all three of the most widespread eco-brands of dishwasher tablets in Moscow, full of frustration, I went to Germany for the BioFach 2013 eco-products exhibition. ...

But first, I came across the Canadian brand Atittude - natural household chemicals "premium", forgive me for this vulgar language of the merchandiser. "Attitude" just recently appeared in Moscow, but has already won me over with its impeccable naturalness. "What about the dishwasher tablets?" - I asked, showing them photos of what Ecover and Sodasan did? “No, our tablets do not leave such a plaque. Try it. ”The gentleman with the Atittude badge poured a handful of pills into an envelope for me. For a split second, I even regretted not privatizing the dishwasher with me.

The next item for presenting photographs of washed glasses was the Ecover's stand. A pleasant young man with glasses understood all my claims instantly - to wash glass in PMM you need to use this liquid as well - he rushed to the shelf and grabbed a bottle with a gray cap: “This liquid will get rid of stains and white bloom. Try it and see! " There was a German word that was difficult for me on the bottle label, so, just in case, I fixed it, here it is:

But friends from Ecover! This auxiliary liquid is not sold here in Russia. At least, neither online nor offline, I could not find it.

At the Sodasan booth, I had a long conversation with my dear Jorgen Hack, who, even without looking at my photos, instantly understood the problem: “Yes, Sodasan tablets leave plaque. By the way, you think that this plaque is only on the glass, but after all, it is also on the plates. It's just not visible. Plaque is due to the calcium present in the water. We do not use phosphates, so our tablets do not wash away plaque when used alone. How to solve this problem? There are several ways that are best used at the same time:

• add salt to PMM;
• reduce the temperature in the dishwasher - less than 50 degrees - the low temperature does not allow calcium to remain on the surface;
• you can also throw the pill straight into the car, rather than putting it in a special container - it will dissolve faster.

Already in Moscow, I saw that there is the fourth way to get rid of plaque is to buy a special rinse aid for PMM brand "Sodasan"(about 370 rubles). However, in terms of the home budget, the solution is not the first choice.

Therefore, upon arrival, I tried to add salt and throw the Sodasan tablet just into the car - yes, Mr. Hack was right: the plaque has significantly decreased, but alas, it has not completely disappeared. Alas, I could not lower the temperature: the manual for the car was hopelessly lost.

Moscow tests continued. Small square tablets "Attitude" inspired me with brilliant results: the dishes do not smell of chemistry, the food remains are practically invisible, and, most importantly, the glasses are transparent. Yes, small divorces still remain. But, apparently, this is already a question for Mosvodokanal - very hard water.

However, advising even wonderful, but almost gold (at a dollar apiece) tablets for PMM Atittude as the only eco-alternative to traditional means is not the most useful recommendation.

And then the incredible happened: Russian (!!!) manufacturers under the name iKeep! sent their pills for PMM - and gave this review much more practical meaning. IKeep! Tablets are made in a factory in Denmark and are free of phosphates, aionic surfactants, chlorine and metal silicates. Possess the European Ecolabel mark. which indicates the responsible attitude of the manufacturer to ecological resources.

I have iKeep tablets in my test! showed the absence of plaque, very few stains on the glass and satisfactory results in washing off food residues from dishes. On the packaging it is indicated that they remove tea plaque, but in my tests it was not so obvious: on some cups the plaque disappeared, but on others it remained for some reason. But overall, the iKeep! Pills, being the cheapest of the subjects, performed well, comparable to those of the Atittude pills.

Why inexpensive Russian iKeep! does not leave a residue, unlike the recognized leaders of ecological household chemicals - Ecover, Sodasan and Almawin? The ability to read labels provides the answer to this tricky question. IKeep tablets! contain polycarboxylates (less than 5%), which other brands do not have. It is polycarboxylates that show good results in the fight against plaque. But it is precisely they that do not allow the completely eco-friendly iKeep tablets to be achieved! 100% biodegradability. And this, of course, is a small minus. However, a report from the European Organization HERA (Chem Manufacturers Association) indicates that the use of polycarboxylates in household detergents does not pose a threat to the environment. The rest of the iKeep! ecologically flawless. One small plus can only be added: like Atittude, iKeep tablets! packed in a water-soluble film that does not need to be unwrapped. A trifle, but nice.
