THE LIFE OF ST. SERGIUS

The Monk Sergius was born in the city of Rostov the Great in 1314 of noble and pious parents, Cyril and Mary, and was named in holy baptism Bartholomew. Even from the mother's womb, God foreshadowed the future fate of His chosen one by some miraculous phenomenon. On one deliberate day, his mother, while pregnant, was in the temple of God for the Divine Liturgy. Before the reading of the Gospel, the baby suddenly cried out in her womb. During the Cherubic song, the baby cried out again. And when the priest exclaimed: "Holy to the saints", the baby cried out for the third time. According to such an unusual phenomenon, everyone who heard it concluded that this baby would be a true servant of the Holy Trinity and a great lamp to the world.

And at the birth of the child, they noticed something unusual in him: when the mother ate fatty food, the baby did not take milk from her and was left without food. The same is manifested on every Wednesday and Friday. All this served as a sign of future fasting and abstinence, which Bartholomew will observe in the days of adolescence. Having been brought up by his parents in good punishment and the fear of God, he was given to be taught in books, but at first the youth did not show natural abilities to cognize the teachings taught to him, about which his parents grieved a lot, as did he himself. But even so, something providential and miraculous came out. In the summertime, the adolescent Bartholomew, being outside the parental home, saw an unfamiliar old monk, standing under a tree and praying. Bartholomew stood near him, waiting for the end of the prayer. When the elder finished his prayer, the youth bowed to him to the ground, and the elder asked: "What do you want, child?" “I am learning to read and write,” Bartholomew answered, “and I don’t understand it; pray to God for me, holy father, so that I can comprehend what is being studied. " The elder read the prayer, blessed the lad, giving him a part of the prosphora, and said: "This is given to you as a sign of the grace of God to understand the teaching taught to you." From that time on, the youth Bartholomew received a blessed gift for teaching books. After that, he began to diligently study the word of God, diligently cleave to church services. And such a skill instilled in his heart the fear of God, that is why the youth Bartholomew surpassed his peers in the understanding of book teaching and the good manners of his life.

Even in the days of Bartholomew's adolescence, his parents moved from the city of Rostov to Radonezh, where the boy finished his studies and began to help them with household chores. When he reached adolescence, he zealously began to serve his father and mother, resting their old age. After the death of his parents, he passed on part of his inheritance to his younger brother Peter, distributed something to the poor and the poor, he himself chose a secluded life in the depths of the Radonezh forests, where he hid from the world in order to work in silence for the Lord for the salvation of his soul. His elder brother, Stephen, who was already a monk at that time, also joined him. Calling on God for help, they began to cut down the forest, and carried the logs to the place where Saint Lavra now exists. First they set up a tent, then a cell, and near it a small church, which, with the blessing of Metropolitan Theognost, was consecrated in the name of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity.

After the consecration of the church, Bartholomew (being twenty-four years old) summoned to him a certain abbot Mitrofan, the rank of presbyter, and asked him for the monastic tonsure. The igumen agreed and on October 7, the day of commemoration of the holy martyrs Sergius and Bacchus, he tonsured him, and named him Sergius.

Hegumen Mitrofan did not stay for long with the newly tonsured monk; having taught him the rules of a silent life, he left him in seclusion. But Sergius, like a lamp placed on a candlestick, could not hide under the cover of solitude and silence. The fame of his godly life spread far across the surrounding villages, which is why those who wanted to keep silent for God's sake began to come to him. Remembering the words of Christ: “... the one who comes to Me, I will not wipe out” (John 6:37), Sergius began to accept those who wanted to imitate him in their deeds of piety and did not forbid settling around his cell. Thus, a small cynovia was compiled near the temple built by Sergius. But they did not have an abbot, for all the brethren had a separate abode. Although the monks asked the monk to be their abbot, he did not agree to their request. At that time in the city of Pereyaslavl-Zalessky there lived the viceroy of the All-Russian Metropolitan, His Grace Athanasius, Bishop of Volyn, who (at the request of the brethren) persuaded Saint Sergius to humbly submit to their election. He summoned Sergius to Pereyaslavl, where he ordained him to the deacon, and the next day to the presbyter, and then made him hegumen. Having accepted the grace of ordination, the Monk Sergius celebrated the Divine Liturgy every day, and for any prayer he appeared before everyone else in the church. As well as in private affairs, he continued to serve the brethren as before: he chopped wood, carried water, made candles, cooked kutya. Especially, if it was a matter of prosphora for a bloodless sacrifice to God, he always prepared them himself. Clothes, as before, he wore shabby, unusable, covered with patches.

With such diligence, deep humility and a silent life, he constantly engaged in reading the word of God and prayer, which is why the Lord honored him with the grace-filled gifts of insight and miracles. Thus, he was honored with a comforting vision, which prophetically foreshadowed the future fate of the verbal sheep entrusted to him. One deep evening, standing on the usual prayer rule, he offered up a prayer for his spiritual children and at that time he heard a voice calling him: "Sergius!" The elder was amazed at the call unusual for night time. Having made a prayer, he opened the window of his cell and suddenly saw a wonderful phenomenon: a great light shone from heaven, so that the darkness of the night dissipated with its abundance. And the same voice repeated: “Sergius! You pray for your children, the Lord has accepted your prayer. " At the same time, the monk saw a multitude of beautiful birds. Then the voice continued: "So the number of your disciples will increase, and those who follow in your footsteps will not become scarce after you." The Monk Sergius, being comforted by this vision, exerted even greater care and concern to ensure that the prayer rule, the strict rite of worship and economic order were preserved in his monastery.

Wishing that the blessing of God, which brings comfort to the monks in abundance, would serve to increase the blessing, the monk introduced into his monastery hospitality, food for the poor and giving to those who ask. Wanderers, beggars and sick people have always found peace and contentment here.

When such a lamp of virtue shone with the light of soul-saving asceticism, and the desert itself flourished like a krin, it is not surprising that the fame of him reached the farthest limits. Both the sovereign prince and the metropolitans of Moscow had great faith and deep respect for the Monk Sergius.

Saint Alexy, Metropolitan of Moscow, sensing the approach of his death, summoned Abba Sergius to him and exhorted him to accept the episcopal dignity, so that in time he could be his successor in the Moscow Metropolis. But the monk firmly refused, not considering himself worthy. “Forgive me, Holy Vladyka,” he replied to the Metropolitan, “you wish to place a burden on me beyond the measure of my dignity. For who am I? An unworthy and worst person, worst of all! " Saint Alexy, seeing the deep humility of Sergius, did not insist on the fulfillment of his desire and dismissed him in peace.

In the days of the Grand Duke of Moscow Demetrius Ioannovich, the Lord, sin for the sake of men, allowed great sorrow on our ancestors. The prince of the Horde Tatars - Mamai - feat the entire great Horde to the Russian land, and at that time all of Russia was enveloped in horror. Prince Demetrius, having great faith in the holy elder Sergius and recognizing in him the gift of clairvoyance, came to his monastery and asked if he advised him to go on a campaign against the godless Tatars. The monk blessed the sovereign for a feat of arms, armed him with prayer and said: “It is your duty, sir, to care for the flock of Christomenite handed over to you from God. Go against the godless Tatars; with the help of God, you will receive victory and return with great praise from the battlefield. " At the same time, the monk gave him two monks from his brethren: Peresvet and Oslyabya. The monk blessed the soldiers preparing to go to battle to stand courageously against their enemies. The prince, guided by the prayers of the monk, won the famous Kulikovo victory, which marked the beginning of the liberation of Russia from the Tatar yoke.

The highest reward and gracious consolation for the Monk Sergius was the wonderful vision, which he was rewarded with. One deep night he sang an akathist in front of the icon of the Mother of God and, looking at Her image, prayed with tears: “O Most Pure Mother of Christ of my God, You are the Intercessor and strong Helper of the human race, ever praying for us unworthy, His Son and our God. Pray to Him to look to this holy abode and to the brethren gathered in praise and honor to His holy name forever! " Having made the prayer rule, he sat down to rest for a while, but suddenly said to his disciple Micah: "Stay awake, child, we will have a wonderful visit." As soon as he spoke these words, he heard a voice: "Behold the Most Pure One is coming!" Saint Sergius hurried out of his cell into the vestibule and suddenly a great light overshadowed him, more than the sun; he saw the Blessed Virgin Mary, accompanied by the apostles Peter and John. The monk fell on his face, but the Blessed Mother touched him and said: “Do not be afraid, My chosen one, I have come to visit you, for your prayer has been heard. Do not grieve for your disciples, for whom you are praying, and for your abode: not only during your life, but also after your departure to God, I will persevere from this abode, endlessly supplying everything you need and covering it in all your needs. " This wonderful vision was, as it were, the last reward in Sergius's earthly life for the labors and deeds he raised to the glory of God.

Being glorified by lofty exploits of piety, the monk was also adorned with the gift of insight. Often predicting the future to people as the present, the elder foresaw his departure to God for eternal rest in six months. Having been ill for some time and having received the Holy Mysteries, he reposed from this life in 1392, on September 25, having lived seventy-eight years.

The whole life of the Monk Sergius testifies to the height of his exploits and holiness. A special reverence for him is expressed in the following words of his biographer: “Bring me the biographies of the ancient glorified saints of God and we will see in truth that he is in no way inferior to the holy men who shone in ancient times. For he himself was an ascetic of piety, and filled the wilderness with virtues to many of his disciples, who shone forth in fasting and silence. We praise him, not as demanding praise, but we only ask: may this true imitator of Christ pray to God for us. "

Thirty years after the death of the Monk Sergius, his holy relics were found incorruptible.

A certain person who had great faith in the monk and who lived near the Sergius monastery often came to pray on his grave. Seeing the miracles from the relics taking place, from time to time he was imbued with warm love for the Abba. Once, in a dreamy vision, the Monk Sergius appeared to him and said: "Go tell the hegumen and the brethren, why do they leave me so much time under the earth, where my body is oppressed by water?" Rising from sleep, being filled with fear and joy from the miraculous vision, he hastened to announce the vision to the Monk Hegumen Nikon, and the Abbot announced this to the whole fraternity. Soon the glorious news spread far throughout the entire district, after which not only commoners, but also saints and sovereign princes flocked to the monastery of Sergiev. The pious godson of the Monk Sergius also came, he had received from the holy font, the Christ-loving Prince George Dimitrievich, in whose patrimony was also the monastery of the Monk Sergius. Under him, the sacred cathedral began to open the miraculous tomb of Sergiev, and suddenly a great fragrance spread. At the same time, a spectacle worthy of surprise appeared: not only was the honest body preserved intact, but also his clothes were not touched by decay, although there was water on both sides of the coffin, which, however, did not dare to touch the saint. Those who saw all this glorified God for such a manifestation of the miraculous power of God.

Having transferred the venerable body of the monk to a new shrine, those who gathered on this day, July 5, 1422, celebrated a solemn celebration, glorifying God, wondrous in His saints. And to him and from us let there be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Song 1

Irmos: Submerge the chariot of the pharaoh, sometimes the miraculous rod of Moses, striking it in a cruciform manner and dividing the sea, but Israel is a fugitive, a pedestrian, save, the song of God is chanting.

Chorus:

For the sake of Christ, having humbled us by the will, even imitating the image to the slavery, you loved humility, and with evil vigilance and prayers, having killed the murderous passions, you ascended the mountain of passionlessness, Sergius is rich.

Like a lamp of light, decorating your soul with tear streams, and like yourself you have lifted up the other Isaac, Venerable One, and you have devoured your heart to God.

Even in the womb of the mother's mother, the three times by the recitation, the servant of the Trinity seemed to be, and the Trinitarian light illuminated, the demonic militia, like a spider, ruined you, blessed Sergius.

Theotokos: Besides the natural laws, you gave birth to the Lawgiver of God and the Man of the Existing One, as if you pray for the good, all-blameless, despise our iniquities, crying always: let us give the Lord, gloriously be glorified.

And now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Theotokos: Having surpassed the cherubims and the Seraphims, you appeared to the Mother of God: You are the only one who accepted the incongruous God in your womb, not foul. In the same way, we will please you with all the faithful songs, Pure One.

Lord have mercy, three times. Glory, and now:

Sedalen, voice 4th

As if truly perishable, leaving the unstable, you followed Christ from the soul, and with sickness and work and evil abstinence, as if you lived without corporeality, Blessed Sergius: pray to Christ God, save our souls.

You have exceeded the Cherubims and Seraphims to the Theotokos, the heavens and the earth are vast, the visible creatures and the invisible were predominantly unjustified condemnation: Heaven does not contain His space, Thou art Thou in Thy womb, Pure One, He must be saved by Thy servant.

Song 4

Irmos: You are my fortress, Lord, You are my and my strength, You are my God, You are my joy, did not leave the bosom of the Father and visit our poverty. So with the prophet Habakkuk I call Ti: glory to Thy power, Humanity.

And now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Theotokos: Grant the cleansing of our ignorance, as if you are sinless, and calm your world, O God, with the prayers of the Birth of You.

Song 5

Irmos: Thou didst cast me away from Thy face, O Nezavisimye Light, and was the alien darkness of the accursed covering me? But turn me, and direct my path to the light of Your commandments, I pray.

Chorus: Reverend our Father Sergius, pray to God for us.

Thou art adamant in fasting, wise, and before his departure, keeping this dangerous, he was honored with imperishable bliss.

Having a keen mind to pay attention to God, thou didst have time to stifle passions, Father, and shake the sheaves of fertility, nourishing the piously praising thee, Venerable Father Sergius.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Thy life is light, Reverend Sergius, and is known by all the end to appear, and Divine kindness is filled, with prayers and praises, and love, even to Christ the Lover of Man.

Lord, have mercy (three times). Glory and now:

Prayer three.

O heavenly citizen of Jerusalem, Venerable Father Sergius! Look at us with mercy, and raise those who are devoted to the earth to the height of heaven. You are woe, in Heaven; we are on earth, below, removed from you, not just a place, much by our sins and iniquities; but to you, as we are kindred, we resort and cry out: instruct us to walk and your way, give understanding and guidance. It is natural for you, our father, to be benevolent and philanthropic: I live on earth, not only about my salvation, but about all those who come to you. Your instructions were by the reed of the scribe, the cursive writer, inscribing the verbs of life on the heart of everyone. Not only did you heal diseases of the body, but more than the spiritual physician you appeared graceful, and your whole holy life was a mirror of all virtue. If you only had a fraction, holier than God, on earth: now you are colic, in Heaven! Today you stand before the Throne of the Unapproachable Light, and in it, like in a mirror, see all our needs and petitions; you are settling together with the Angels, about the only sinner who repents, rejoicing. And God's love for man is inexhaustible, and your boldness towards Him is great: do not stop crying to the Lord for us. Ask for your intercession from our All-Merciful God the peace of His Church, under the sign of the militant Cross, harmony in faith and unanimity, superstition and schisms, destruction, confirmation in good deeds, healing for sick, sad consolation, offended intercession, help in need. Do not put us to shame, who come to you with faith. If you are unworthy of only a father and an intercessor, but you, the imitator of the former love of God, have created us worthy through the conversion from evil deeds to a good life. All God-enlightened Russia, filled with your miracles and blessed with mercies, confesses thee to being its patron and intercessor. Reveal your ancient mercy, and you helped them with their father, do not reject us, their children, who are marching towards you with their feet. We believe that we are present with the spirit. If there is a Lord, as His word teaches us, there will be a tamo and His servant will be. You are the faithful servant of the Lord, and God exists everywhere, you are in Him, and He is in you, moreover, you are with us in body. Thy incorruptible and life-giving your relics, like a priceless treasure, give us miracles God. Facing them, as if I live for you, we fall and pray: accept our prayers and lift them up on the altar of the goodness of God, so we will receive you grace and help in good time in our needs. Strengthen us, the faint-hearted, and strengthen us in the faith, so that we undoubtedly hope to receive all that is good from the Master's mercy through your prayers. But to your spiritual flock, gathered by you, do not stop to control the rod of spiritual wisdom: help those who struggle, lift up the weakened ones, hasten to bear the yoke of Christ in complacency and patience, and rule us all in peace and repentance, end our belly and reign with hope in the blessed bowels of Abrah where you joyfully rest on your labors and labors, glorifying with all the saints God, in the Trinity, the glorified, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayer four.

O venerable and God-bearing our Father Sergius! Look at us (names) with mercy and, to the land of those who are committed, raise us to the height of heaven. Strengthen our cowardice and confirm us in faith, so that we undoubtedly hope to receive all that is good from the mercy of the Sovereign God through your prayers. Seek your intercession for every gift to everyone and anyone who is worthily and to all of us with your prayers that help you, on the day of the Terrible Judgment, grant a part of deliverance, the gums of the country are fellowships and hear the blessed voice of the Lord Christ: come, blessing of My Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you. ... October 8 (September 25, old style) - THE REPRESENTATION of the Monk SERGIUS, Abbot of Radonezh and All Russia, the wonderworker (1392).

Sergius of Radonezh is venerated by the Russian Orthodox Church as a saint and is considered the Greatest Ascetic of the Russian land. Founder of the Trinity Monastery near Moscow (now the Trinity-Sergius Lavra), reformer of monasticism in Northern Russia.

The Monk Sergius of Radonezh (in the world bore the name Bartholomew) was born c. 1314 in the family of the boyar Cyril and his wife Maria. As a child, he could not master reading and writing, but at the age of thirteen he met a schema-miracle worker, through whose prayer he learned to read and write. After the death of his parents, Bartholomew retired to the Khotkovo-Pokrovsky Monastery, where his brother Stefan had already pursued asceticism. Being inclined to live in the wilderness, he persuaded Stephen to retire to a dense forest (Radonezh forest). There, on the banks of the Konchura River on the Makovets hill, they built a wooden church in the name of the Holy Trinity. Stephen subsequently went to the Epiphany monastery in Moscow, while Bartholomew remained to live in the wilderness.

Later he met a certain abbot Mitrofan and took monastic tonsure from him with the name Sergius. A monastery was formed around the ascetic, which soon acquired fame, which reached Constantinople itself. Ecumenical Patriarch Philotheus sent him with a special embassy a cross, a paraman, a schema and a letter, in which he praised him for his virtuous life and gave advice to introduce kinovia (strict communal living) in the monastery.

The inhabitants of the monastery lived from their labors, not accepting alms. Hegumen Sergius himself worked on a par with the brethren.

Saint Sergius was greatly respected by Saint Alexy of Moscow and even wished to see him as his successor, but Sergius refused. The Monk Sergius was also highly respected by the princes. Grand Duke Dmitry Donskoy often listened to his advice; he received his blessing for the Battle of Kulikovo from the Radonezh abbot. In addition, the Monk Sergius blessed his two monks, Peresvet and Oslyaba, to go to battle. By this time, also not without the help of Sergius, who reconciled the warring parties, almost all the princes had already recognized the supremacy of Prince Dmitry.

The Monk Sergius reposed in 1392, and thirty years later his relics were acquired. Now they are in the Trinity Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra. In 1919, the relics were opened by the Bolsheviks and were in the museum until 1946, when they were returned to the Church again.

The Monk Sergius of Radonezh departed to the Lord on September 25 (October 8 according to the new style), 1392. Before his death, he commanded the brethren, first of all, to strictly preserve the purity of the Orthodox faith. The monk also bequeathed to observe like-mindedness, spiritual and physical purity, unhypocritical love, to retire from evil desires, to abstain from food and drink, to have zeal for humility and love for strange things.

For seven hundred years the Monk Sergius of Radonezh has been called the Abbot of the Russian land. Sergius shrewdly understood the motivation of the students and their mental disposition. He never refused those who sincerely sought the Heroic Deed, only warned them about the difficulties of living in the wilderness and about the fears that overwhelmed the newcomers; he told them:

“I will accept you, but let it be known to each of you that if you have come to work for God and want to be silent with me here, then prepare yourself to endure troubles, and sorrows, and needs, and lack; for with many sorrows it is fitting for us to enter the Kingdom of Heaven ... But do not be afraid, the flock is small, I believe, you also believe that the Lord will not betray you to the end to be tempted to be against your forces. Today we will be filled with sorrow, but tomorrow our sorrow will be joyful and will prevail, and no one can take our joy. Dare, dare, people of God! "

TROPAR, voice 4
Like the virtues, the ascetic, / as a true warrior of Christ God, / on the passion of the velma, you fought in temporary life, / in singing, vigils and veneration, the image of being your disciple, / in the same way, the Holy Spirit dwelt in thee, / You are brightly decorated with action; / but, as if having boldness towards the Holy Trinity, / remember the flock, you have gathered the hedgehog, wise, / and do not forget, as you promised, / visiting your children, // Sergius, our venerable father.

In the purity of your life, the source of your tears, the confession of labor sweat you copulated, and you blew out the spiritual font, holy Sergius, reverend, having washed the memory of your soul and body with the added love of those who create love. IN KONDAK, voice 8
As if the incorporeal equalizer of all the saints exalted you with fasting labors and prayer vigils, wise Sergius, therefore you perceived from God to heal ailments and drive away demons and for that sake cry out to you: Rejoice, Father Venerable Sergius.
