Decking is called a universal material made on the basis of galvanized metal sheet, which is widely used in modern construction practice. Elegant and attractive forms of roofing, made of profiled sheets of bright colors, are quite common today in private houses. Often they are made in the form of a combination of geometric shapes of various configurations, which give the roof coverings a special chic and originality.

Before covering the roof with corrugated board with your own hands, we advise you to familiarize yourself with the advantages of this material, and also take into account some of the features of working with it.

Benefits of using corrugated board

Corrugated board

The main advantage of the corrugated board is the possibility of its independent installation, made without the involvement of outside workers. In this case, you can get by with the forces of only a few people invited as assistants.

First of all, you should know that the profiled billet is made from cold-rolled metal sheet with a combined protective coating. A sheet blank formed in this way has the following advantages:

  • the profiled sheet has sufficient thickness to ensure the resistance of the roofing to mechanical loads (to the effects of wind and packed snow);
  • a multilayer coating, which includes a special paint and varnish layer, reliably protects the metal base from the destructive action of moisture (from corrosion);
  • galvanized corrugated board is cheaper, but over time, such a coating fades;
  • the cost of the material in question can please the potential consumer with its availability.

Installation features

Installation of corrugated board on the roof

For everyone who wants to get acquainted with how to properly prepare a roofing covering from corrugated board, first of all, it is necessary to take into account some of the features of the operations carried out in this case. These features primarily include:

  • a method of delivering sheet material to the place of work (to the attic of a structure being erected or being repaired), ensuring the complete preservation of the appearance of the material;
  • the procedure for the manufacture of the lathing used as a basis for the installation of roofing;
  • the safety of the operations performed, provided by the observance of the rules for working with metal (the use of overalls and gloves, for example), as well as the need to use soft shoes to move over the laid material.

Sheathing for corrugated board

In addition, before starting work, it is necessary to determine in advance the main characteristics of the mounted rafter system (rafter pitch, roof overhang angle, etc.), which, in turn, depend on the configuration of the coating itself.

In the most general case (when installing roofs of complex configuration), it is necessary to ensure that the following conditions are met:

  • First of all, the fastening elements of the lower valley should be prepared (the abutment of adjacent roof planes, which serves to drain rainfall).
  • The laying of the roofing itself should be started by securing the end cornice strips, located approximately at the level of the waterproofing layer.
  • Installation of the covering begins, as a rule, from the corner of the roof (in cases with hip structures - from the center of the hip);
  • The amount of overlap between adjacent sheets (the so-called overlap) is selected depending on the angle of inclination of the roof. It usually has a value from 150 to 200 mm, but not less than the width of one wave.
  • At least seven self-tapping screws should be used to secure each sheet; the most important joints are sometimes reinforced with special steel rivets.

Before the final fixation of the workpieces laid in a row, all of them are subject to mandatory alignment along the lower edge of the slope.

Installation in the area of the valley, ridge and pipes

Installation of corrugated board in the area of the ridge

When installing corrugated board, you will surely face the need to finish such inconvenient places for laying as valleys, chimney pipes, ridge and other junctions. For their finishing, it is necessary to use special elements included in the set of profiled sheet coverings.

The installation procedure for adjoining elements is as follows:

  • To equip the gutter at the dormer window, you will need a sheet cut into two parts, which should be prepared in advance. When finishing the window, first the lower half of the cut workpiece is placed, then the so-called bottom strip, and only the roofing sheet itself is mounted on top of it.
  • The installation of a special two-meter-long end strip with an overlap of about 50‒100 mm should be started from the overhang side with a gradual shift towards the ridge. The plank is mounted on a pre-prepared end board with a step of about 1 meter. The unused remainder of the plank is simply trimmed off.
  • When working with roofing material, it is recommended to use special seals with fine corrugation, laid directly under the sheet to be mounted. In this case, the amount of overlap between adjacent sheets (overlap) should be about 100 mm.
  • In the area where the chimney exits to the roof, the sheet to be laid is cut in advance according to the shape of the pipe, after which the joints are closed with special elements (abutment strips), which form a kind of "apron" around the pipe.
  • When finishing the ridge of the roof, special ridge elements are used.
  • Fasteners and seals

    Roofing screws

    Self-expanding roof seal To fasten blanks made of profiled sheet, it is recommended to use special galvanized self-tapping screws, complete with sealing gaskets made of elastic material. The caps of the fastening elements must be protected with a special compound, matched to the color of the coating and providing them with the necessary resistance to corrosive, mechanical and ultraviolet influences.

    Often, in practice, when installing corrugated board, special gaskets are used to ensure a snug fit of the coating material to the base strips. The use of sealing elements makes it possible to protect the roofing elements of the structure from the ingress of climatic precipitation on them in the form of rain, snow, wet drizzle, etc.

    Such protection not only increases the service life of the elements of the rafter system, but also improves the sound insulation characteristics of the entire coating as a whole.

    Seals on the ridge of the roof from corrugated board

    Currently, manufacturers of building materials produce sealing elements that repeat the structure of the corrugated surface of corrugated sheets. In addition, special seals are available for sale to ensure a secure fit of the ridge roof elements.

    Decking is considered a versatile building material. It can be used for a wide variety of purposes. Recently, more and more often you can see very elegant and attractive roofs, which are covered with sheets of corrugated board. As a rule, there are plain surfaces, but there are also those on which geometric patterns in the form of rectangles and stripes are applied. This design gives the roof individuality and special style. Often you can hear from the owners of private properties: "I am covering the roof with corrugated board for the first time." Craftsmen who do not have experience in roofing work may face certain difficulties. Next, we will analyze how to properly cover the roof with corrugated board.

    Installation benefits

    Many owners of private residential buildings say: "I cover the roof with corrugated board, considering this material to be the best of all existing ones." Let's figure out what are its advantages. One of the undoubted advantages of corrugated board is the ease of its installation. Often the family budget does not allow hiring a team of craftsmen. In this case, it is necessary to choose the material so that it can be mounted independently, attracting as little outside help as possible. In this case, the corrugated board is optimal. To carry out the work, it is enough to involve two people. However, they may not have much experience and do not have special knowledge. It is enough to follow some simple guidelines. At the same time, it should be said that the installation itself takes relatively little time - you can cover the roof with corrugated board in a couple of days. The issue of price is also important. The cost of this material, in comparison with others, is much lower.

    Main characteristics

    Before covering the roof with corrugated board, you should get acquainted with some of its operational properties. Many owners prefer this particular material because it is durable and reliable. Profiled sheeting is made from cold-rolled metal sheet. Its surface is usually treated with a polymer. The corrugated board is resistant to wind loads. The paint and varnish layer applied at the factory does not allow corrosion and deposits to damage the surface. The material is available in various thicknesses. This allows you to choose the best option for certain climatic conditions. So, for example, in regions with a large amount of snow in winter, a bearing profiled sheet is perfect, with a wave height of 20 mm or more.

    Material calculation

    Before covering the roof with corrugated board, it is necessary to calculate the number of sheets. During the calculation, the overlap should be taken into account when joining the material both horizontally and vertically. In addition, the dimensions of the overhang must be taken into account. The vertical overlap is taken into account depending on the profile. The imposition of the edge of one sheet on another is done with overlapping waves. Different grades of material have different pitch. A horizontal overlap is calculated depending on the slope angle. So, if the angle is up to 15 degrees, then the overlap can be more than 20 cm.If the slope is within fifteen to thirty degrees, then the size of the overlap is within 15-20 cm.When the angle of inclination is more than 30 degrees, the overlap is made 10-15 cm. overhangs is determined in accordance with the brand of corrugated board, namely with the height of the sheet. With a large size, there is a high risk of moisture getting under the roof. This, in turn, will lead to decay of the wooden elements of the rafter system. Therefore, the higher the sheet, the greater the overhang.

    Insulation materials

    Speaking about how to properly cover the roof with corrugated board, it is necessary to say about the protection of the roof. Special films are used as a vapor barrier. Their assortment is wide enough today. You can also use roofing material. The material should be stapled to the rafters. After that, the crate is made. Laying roofing material or film starts from the bottom edge. This will overlap the top edge of the row and prevent moisture from entering the wood.

    Lathing

    Before laying the roof with corrugated board, it is necessary to build a base for the sheets. The lathing is arranged in accordance with the grade of the material. If the thickness of the metal is 0.5 mm, and the type is chosen either C-8, or C-20, or C-10, then it is recommended to make it solid. In other cases, the pitch of the lathing is set in accordance with the angle of the slope and the size of the profile. As a rule, the distance between the elements is 0.5-1 m. All wood in the rafter system must be treated with special antiseptic compounds. They protect the elements not only from decay, but also from fire.

    Safety engineering

    Before you close the roof with corrugated board, you need to familiarize yourself with some of the rules for the implementation of work. Installation of the material is relatively simple, but some peculiarities should be taken into account. First of all, this is the delivery of material and lifting it to the roof. Here, care must be taken so that, firstly, not to damage the sheets, and secondly, not to damage the facade of the building. The actual work itself must be carried out in protective gloves and appropriate clothing. You can move on the roof by stepping on the ridge. During installation, it is necessary to correctly determine the type of rafter system used, as well as the distance between the elements.

    We cover the roof with our own hands with corrugated board

    First of all, it is necessary to determine the optimal styling option. Then the boardwalk is made for the valley planks. After that, the end elements are attached. The installation of the roof begins with the installation of the eaves. It should be located lower than the waterproofing film. Next, you should proceed to fastening the sheets. How to properly cover the roof with corrugated board? Laying the material should start from the end, if the roof is normal. If the roof is hip, then the mounting origin is the center of the hip. One sheet takes seven to eight fasteners (screws). On some joints, it is better to use special steel rivets. All sheets must be aligned to the end of the slope before final fixation. Depending on the angle, as mentioned above, an overlap is installed. However, in this case, it must be done at least one wave.

    Reinforcement of material near pipes, skates, valleys

    Speaking about how to properly cover the roof with corrugated board, it is necessary to say about the laying of sheets near various elements of the roof. For the device of a groove at the dormer (construction of a short valley), it is necessary to cut the sheet at the lower end into 2 equal parts. First, the bottom element is placed, then the bottom bar is installed. The last is to mount the roofing sheet. For the installation of the ridge strip, special smooth elements are used. It is recommended to lay special seals with small corrugation or repeating the roof profile under the corrugated board. The overlap must have a length of 100 mm or more. The strip on the side of the sheet is fixed with self-tapping screws. The step between the fasteners is up to 400 mm. It is advisable to install outlet pipes (pass-through elements) together with a snow plow. The lower components are selected according to the roof profile. The pipes should have a diameter of about 100 mm. Ventilation outlet elements are subject to insulation.

    End plate

    The length of this element is two meters. The overlap during installation should be 50-100 mm. Installation must begin from the overhang towards the ridge of the roof, near which the excess is cut off. In this case, the bar covers a distance of at least one wave of the corrugated board. The element is attached to the end board and to the ridge to the sheets. The distance between the screws is 1 m.

    Seals and fasteners

    Since it is necessary to cover the roof with corrugated board, observing the technology, special attention should be paid to the self-tapping screws that are used to fix the material. Fasteners are made of hardened galvanized galvanized steel. They have a special elastomer gasket. The caps of the self-tapping screws have the same color as the corrugated board. The coloring of the elements is carried out during the production process with thermally hardened polyester powder. This guarantees the high quality of the elements, their resistance to corrosion, UV rays, and mechanical damage.

    Before covering the roof with corrugated board, you must make sure that you have all the necessary fixing components. Often, special gaskets are also used when arranging the roof. Seals are used to improve protection from wind, rain and snow, and prevent moisture from penetrating under the deck. This is ensured by the tight fit of the spacers to the strips. Among other things, seals improve the soundproofing of the house. Installation today is most often carried out using seals for the configuration of the corrugation of the flooring. Also, a special pad for the 1.1 m ridge and the same reverse is used. There are also universal seals for two meters, at 45 degrees by 1.05 meters.

    Roof care

    Above, we looked at how to cover the roof with corrugated board. It should be said that taking care of the roof is as easy as installing it. Rain is enough to keep the surface clean. However, rainfall may not always wash away debris, leaves or branches. For this reason, it is recommended to clean the surface annually. It is also necessary to monitor the condition of the gutters, the drainage system. Places where dirt is present are washed with a soft brush and water from a hose, the pressure in which should be up to 50 bar. If there is heavy contamination, it is allowed to use products for painted surfaces. In this case, apply the substance, let it stand for a few minutes, and then rinse with water.

    Tough stains are removed with a clean cloth and solvent. After such cleaning, the roof should be rinsed with a hose. Do not use products that are not intended for such surfaces. Otherwise, the coating can be significantly damaged. Ice and snow should be removed using wooden or plastic spatulas. It is necessary to carry out this work carefully so as not to scratch the surface.

    Finally

    Despite the relative simplicity of installing a roof from corrugated board, this work has its own characteristics. When installing a roof, they must be taken into account. Performing work in accordance with the technology guarantees the durability and reliability of the structure. The correct calculation of the material is also important.

    "How to properly cover the roof with corrugated board and is it possible to do it yourself?" - these questions are asked by every owner of the house, who decided to use the corrugated sheet as a covering for the roof of his house or outbuildings. Profiled sheet as a roofing material is a leader not only in terms of price-quality ratio, but also in ease of installation. If you act step by step and accurately follow the simple technology, then covering the roof with corrugated board will not cause any particular difficulties.

    For the roof, choose a metal profile of the H57 or HC35 brand. H57 corrugated board with an additional stiffener, the so-called load-bearing - ideal as a roofing material, but expensive. Usually they use the universal HC35, it is suitable in quality and is more democratic in cost. You can choose an ordinary galvanized sheet, or you can use a polymer coating, it all depends on your wishes and your wallet. Before covering the roof with corrugated board, you need to decide on the number of sheets of material, additional elements. If the roof is simple enough, then you can do the calculation yourself. Roof slopes are rectangles, isosceles trapezoids or triangles, that is, the length of the slope is the value from the ridge to the base, add 5 cm and get the length of the metal profile sheet.
    When roofing with corrugated board, it is desirable that the slope be covered in length with one sheet, since the fewer overlaps, the more reliable the roof, but if you still have to cover in several rows, then you need to add 20 cm for each overlap. Hence:

    • LENGTH OF SHEET PROFLIST = LENGTH of the slope + 5 cm, if the roof will be covered in one sheet.
    • LENGTH OF THE PROFLIST SHEET = LENGTH of the slope + 5 cm + 20 cm (for each row with an overlap), if the roof will be covered in several horizontal rows.
    The number of sheets of corrugated board is calculated according to the school geometry course. The area of each slope is calculated and divided by the working area of the profiled sheet. EXAMPLE OF CALCULATION: The ramp is a trapezoid. Making measurements:
    The roof can be covered in 2 rows of 4.3 m each - 20 cm will go for an overlap, 5 cm for an overhang, and the working LENGTH of the sheet is obtained = 4.3 m-0.2 m-0.05 m = 4.05 m. each type of metal profile has its own working width, but in this example, the most common professional flooring for roofing НС35 is considered. The useful width of the sheet of the HC35 metal profile is 1 m, so the working area of the sheet for such a slope is 4.05 × 1 = 4.05 m2. We count the number of sheets: 128: 4.05 = 31.6, that is, we need 32 sheets of metal profile, 4.3 m each.You can take and cover the roof with one sheet of 8.15 m long, such sheets will need 128: 8.15 = 15, 7, that is, 16 sheets. But will it be convenient to work with such a length yourself ... If the roof is "broken", with many bends, you need to make a scan of all the slopes and count the number of sheets for each slope and fold them. You can also contact the specialists, they have special programs that will make the calculation and even the best styling scheme. There are also online calculators for calculating the amount of corrugated board, but before you load the data into the program, check the correctness of their calculation using a simple example, at least what is given above. Depending on the type of roof, additional elements are purchased, such as ridge, end, cornice and joint strips, screws for their fastening. Self-tapping screws are purchased at the rate of 11 pieces per 1m2. Thus, before covering the roof with corrugated board, you need to carry out painstaking work to measure, count all the materials that will be used in the work. You should work out this stage very carefully so as not to interrupt work in the future due to a lack of some details.

    Standard stage. Warming and vapor barrier

    A roof made of corrugated board for our climatic conditions necessarily requires insulation. The insulation technology is the same as for all other types of coating: mineral wool between the rafters and a vapor barrier layer, the insulation layer must be at least 15 cm.

    Hydro-barrier

    In order to protect the heat-insulating layer from moisture and prevent the roof from leaking, a waterproofing layer is laid. This is an obligatory step, it cannot be neglected. Let's consider how to properly cover the roof with waterproofing. It is better to choose modern waterproofing materials under the roofing with corrugated board. Both membrane and polypropylene films are widely used. The technology for laying them is very simple. If the roof is new, built from scratch, then, of course, it is better to use a membrane. The waterproofing layer is unrolled over the main rafters in horizontal rows. The overlap of the upper row to the lower one should be 15 cm, the film should be a little, sag by 2 centimeters (but there should be a distance of about 3 cm between the insulation layer and the waterproofing) and fixed with a stapler to the rafters, the overlaps should be glued with adhesive tape.
    If you simply plan to overlap the roof with corrugated board, previously covered with another material, then there is no point in using a membrane. A dense thick plastic wrap is laid on top of an old insulating layer, for example, roofing material. In any case, the waterproofing is fastened with a stapler, and the joints are glued with construction tape.

    Counter and lathing

    After the waterproofing layer is laid, the counter-lattice is packed. Along the main rafters, on top of the hydro-barrier, bars are packed with gaps of 20 mm. For counter-lattice, bars of 25 × 40 mm are usually used. A crate is stuffed onto the counter-lattice. For different types of corrugated board, different types of lathing step, the thinner the corrugated board and the smaller the slope of the roof, the smaller the lathing step. This article discusses how to properly cover the roof with corrugated board, therefore, the recommended correct option for the roof is considered - the HC35 metal profile. However, in the table below, we will indicate the recommended step for different types of professional sheet.

    N-75not allowed less than 8 degrees0.7; 0.8; 0.9 mmnot more than 4000 mm
    For lathing, 30 × 40 mm slats are usually used. They begin to fill them in horizontal rows from the eaves to the ridge with a step of 500-1000 mm, depending on the angle of inclination of the roof. The slats are spliced only on the rafters. For all these works, galvanized nails are used. The length of the nails should be 2 times the thickness of the battens. It is advisable to make a continuous crate on the ridge and on the eaves of the roof, in the places where pipes exit, on the valleys, it is necessary to fill in additional bars, to which additional materials will be attached later for their design. Ideally, a cutaway roof scheme with corrugated board looks like this:

    Laying profiled sheets

    It's time to directly attach the corrugated board to the roof. The sheets are fastened only with special roofing screws with a rubber lining near the head and a drill at the end, matching the color to the profiled sheets. For fastening, a conventional screwdriver is used. First, the eaves strip is attached.
    The sheets are lifted to the roof on inclined boards so as not to deform them. The first sheet begins to be laid from the lower corner of the roof, the sheets are carefully aligned with the eaves. The fastening of the corrugated board to the lathing is carried out in the lower wave with self-tapping screws 4.8 × 35 mm.
    There are several schemes for laying profiled sheets, but the rules for working with profiled sheets are always the same:
    1. The lowest row (along the cornice) and the uppermost row (along the ridge) are fastened with self-tapping screws into each wave deflection.
    2. The middle of the slope is fastened through the wave in a checkerboard pattern.
    3. Self-tapping screws are screwed in clearly perpendicular to the plane of the sheet, distortions are unacceptable.
    4. The longitudinal step for fixing the sheet is 1 m.
    5. Vertical overlaps between adjacent sheets make 1 wave (for a flat roof 2 waves).
    6. The top row lays on the bottom row with an overlap of 20 cm.
    7. The horizontal overlap line is attached with self-tapping screws to each bottom wave.
    8. Profiled sheets along the edges of the roof are attached to each batten.
    9. Cutting of profiled sheets is done either with a jigsaw or electric shears (not with a grinder!).
    10. Moving on the roof follows the lower wave in soft shoes.

    Since it is not so difficult to properly cover the roof with corrugated board, fastening the sheets should not take much time. After all the sheets of the metal profile are fixed, they begin to fasten the additional elements: skates, end (wind) strips, snow holders. The ridge is fastened with self-tapping screws into every second upper wave, with an overlap on the sides of 150-200 mm. End (wind) strips are installed with an overlap of at least 50 mm.
    All additional elements are attached with special long self-tapping screws for the metal profile - 4.8 × 50 (60) mm.

    Galvanizing for "tricky" moments

    It is very convenient to cover valleys with ordinary galvanized iron or painted metal. To do this, a regular sheet is bent at the angle of the valley and nailed to the crate, and corrugated board is applied on top. To decorate this element, in order to close the corner of the wrong color from above, you can install the upper plank of the valley, matching the color scheme. To insulate the pipe, you can also use a metal sheet bent with the letter Z, the upper bend is sawn 2 cm into the pipe, the lower one is attached to the crate, and the corrugated board is laid on top. To get comprehensive answers to the question: "How to cover the roof with corrugated board with your own hands" and learn some tricks, you can see the following video tutorials.

    Such material as corrugated board has long been known to everyone and is used in construction in a variety of "roles" - from it they install fences, build garages and sheds, and also cover the roofs of outbuildings, small houses and even large mansions. Decking is produced in a variety of colors, so you can see houses covered not only with sheets of the same color, but also with a combination of shades. which looks very original.

    To know how to properly cover the roof with corrugated board, you need to carefully study the instructions, and then purchase high-quality roofing and consumables, prepare all the necessary tools.

    It is very important that you do not need to have special professional skills to cover the roof with this material. The main thing is to follow the technological sequence of work and not make mistakes that can lead to roof leakage, which will require finishing the coating "to mind".

    Advantages and disadvantages of corrugated board as a leveling material

    Like any roofing material, corrugated board has its pros and cons, which you need to know before purchasing it.

    TO positive qualities This material can be attributed to the following:

    • The low weight of the corrugated board allows you to easily raise it to a height and, if necessary, level it at the installation site.
    • The optimal ratio of cost and service life of the material. With high-quality installation, the manufacturer sets a minimum operational period of 12-15 years.
    • Ease of installation - the material can be easily overlapped and screwed with special screws.
    • The aesthetics of the coating - corrugated board, due to the variety of colors, makes the exterior of the house neat, gives it individuality.
    • In the relief of most models of sheets, special capillary grooves are provided, which are designed to effectively drain water when laying overlapping material sheets.

    Negative qualities corrugated board can be called:

    • High thermal conductivity of the metal. Therefore, the corrugated board will not protect the attic from overheating or low temperatures. If this coating is chosen, a good as well as an attic floor will be required, which implies additional costs for thermal insulation material and its installation.
    • In windy weather, when the wind speed is 15 m / s and higher, any metal coating emits ultrasonic vibrations, which negatively affects the human psyche. Therefore, in regions with constant windy weather, it is better to give preference to roof coverings that do not vibrate in the wind.
    • Low sound insulation. If the roof is not equipped with heat and sound insulating material, the sound of drops or hailstones falling on the covering will be clearly audible in the house.

    Choice roof sheeting

    Decking can be made from galvanized metal sheets that do not have a color coating. Such sheets are most often used to create temporary or permanent sheds, or to cover outbuildings. It is also often used for fencing construction sites. Unpainted corrugated board has a fairly low cost, but is not very suitable for covering residential buildings, since it has low performance characteristics and is not very attractive in terms of aesthetics in appearance.

    It is very popular, which has a decorative protective coating made of polymer compounds. This material is more durable and is able to withstand quite serious loads. Of course it is with proper installation, which largely depends on the slope angle of the roof slopes.

    Several types of corrugated board are produced with a protective and decorative polymer coating:

    • Load bearing (H) - designed to cover roofs, ceilings and sheds.
    • Wall ( WITH) - used for the construction of a fence, hangars, garages.
    • Universal (NS) - suitable for roofing, installation of fences, construction of garages, utility facilities, etc.

    It is better to use a load-bearing structure to cover the roof, but as a last resort any of the above types can be used.

    In addition, this material varies in height and number of waves. The height of the wave (corrugation) is indicated by a number that is placed next to the marking of the type of corrugated board. For example, several models are presented in table:

    MarkingAppearance of corrugated boardApplicationCorrugation height in mmMetal thickness in mmUseful width in mm

    The sheet metal can be coated on one side or on two sides, but whatever it is purchased for, it is better to choose a material that is protected on both sides.

    The coating consists of numerous protective layers, it is clearly visible on the diagram presented here which layers cover the outer and inner sides.

    Outer side of roofing material:

    • The basis for the corrugated board is steel sheet.
    • The steel is coated with a zinc layer.
    • Next comes the anti-corrosion coating.
    • A primer is applied to it, which serves as a preparation for the polymer.
    • Then comes the colored polymer coating.
    • A protective film (polyurethane) is often applied to the colored polymer coating to keep it from fading and peeling.
    • For transportation and storage of corrugated board, it can be additionally covered with a film coating on top, which is removed after installation.

    The inner side of the corrugated board is covered in the same sequence with exactly the same materials, but on some models there is no colored polymer film from the inside, and on others the sheet is covered equally on both sides. The latter, of course, have a higher cost, but their service life is much longer.

    The color range of the corrugated board is quite diverse. By the most conservative estimates, the color range is represented by no less than 30 shades, so choosing the right one will not amount to tons of ore. The color layer can be applied to the surface using a powder method or using a special polymer coating technology.

    To summarize the selection criteria, the following can be listed:

    • To make sure that the material is of high quality and produced in a professional environment, you should ask the seller for a product certificate. If it is absent, then it is better to contact another store.
    • The marking of the material is checked, indicating its purpose, thickness and wave height.
    • The appearance of the material is assessed. It is necessary to pay attention to the evenness of the sheet, the absence of defects in the coloring and protective layer, the same shade of all sheets, the uniformity of the coating. The appearance can tell a lot about the quality of the corrugated board - if, upon examination, a detachment of the coloring layer or burrs on the cuts are found, then it is better to refuse to purchase.
    • Another criterion is to check the corrugated board for bending - a high-quality material should be elastic, and if you try to bend it, then it tends to return to its previous position. At the same time, there should be no trace of a fold on the coating.
    • The type of external decorative coating is polymer or powder. The best quality coatings for corrugated board are matt and regular polyester and plastisol. Coating data must also be stated on the product certificate.
    • Material price. It must be remembered that you should not choose the cheapest material - it is unlikely that it will be of high quality. Moreover, all the corrugated board has a very affordable price.

    When the material is purchased, it is necessary to correctly deliver it to the construction site, as well as carefully, without damage, unload and raise it to a height.

    Corrugated board

    How to avoid damage during transportation and installation of the material?

    It is important to highlight this issue because damage to the corrugated board during its delivery, unloading and installation will significantly reduce the service life of the future roof.

    This material is made from steel sheet, which is embossed using cold rolling in special equipment.

    Such a material, laid as a roof, is able to withstand high wind and snow loads, but during its transportation, loading and unloading, the coating of the sheets can be subjected to unnecessary mechanical loads, which will lead to its damage. To prevent this from happening, certain rules of transportation, storage, carrying and lifting of sheets should be observed.

    • The transportation of the corrugated board is carried out by trucks. Sheets should be stacked in stacks on a rigid body base or on a special metal frame, which is fixed in the body at an angle.

    • After laying the roofing material in the car, it must be securely fastened with slings in order to avoid friction of the sheets against each other when the car is moving, as this can damage the protective coating.
    • The car transported by the corrugated board must move at a speed of no more than 80 km / h.
    • It is very important to ensure that the unloading of the roof covering is carried out with the utmost care. If unloading will be done manually, it is desirable that each of the sheets be removed from the stack separately, transferred and stacked in a place prepared for them. It is best to prepare a flooring of boards and plywood, covered with polyethylene on top.
    • It is required to ensure that none of the sheets is bent during transportation, since it will not be possible to return it to its original state, which means that when covering, gaps are formed between the sheets, which will disrupt the evenness and integrity of the roof.
    • To raise the corrugated board to the roof without harming it, you also need to do it correctly:

    - for the accurate lifting of the material, logs will be required, which are installed at an angle to the roof - this will be a kind of "rails" for the convenience of lifting sheets;

    - the sheets are raised to a height of only one piece;

    - the very laying of the corrugated board on the roof can be done by two craftsmen, but it is better to raise the roofing material to a height by three people - this is an additional insurance of the integrity of the material and the safety of work.

    Now, just a few words about how not to damage the corrugated board during installation.

    The maximum risk of damage to the material is added if a large roof area is covered, since during the installation and fastening process, you will have to walk on the already laid roof. Therefore, it is necessary to choose the right footwear for work - it should not only be comfortable, but also have a soft elastic sole that will not damage the protective layer and will not slip on the roof surface. You can step on the fixed roofing material only between the ribs and only in those places where the guides pass, especially if there is a large step between them.

    In order for the installation to take place accurately, without unnecessary damage to the roofing material, you need to use only high-quality tools. For work you will need:

    • Screwdriver.
    • Roulette.
    • Shears for cutting metal up to 0.6 mm thick.
    • Marker for marks.
    • Level.
    • Electric drill.
    • Rubber hammer.
    • Jigsaw or electric shears.
    • Soft brush for sweeping away metal shavings.

    It is forbidden to cut corrugated board with a "grinder". The best tool for this is the electric shears.

    Features of installing corrugated board as a roof

    In order for the installation of the roofing material to be successful, it is necessary to take into account some of the features of the work.

    Influence of roof slope on installation

    Much of the roofing process depends on the slope of the roof. It is very important to correctly position the boards or battens of the sheathing, as well as to observe the required amount of overlap of the sheets of corrugated board.

    • If the slope of the slope is 5 ÷ 10 degrees, then the crate is made solid or the slats are nailed at a distance of no more than 5 ÷ 7 mm from each other.

    In this case, the overlap of the sheets should be horizontally in two waves, and the overlap of the sheets on the bottom row should be at least 300 mm. And with such a small slope of the slope, the gaps between the sheets of corrugated board are most often filled with sealant, since there is still a risk of water leakage between them, especially in windy weather.

    • With a slope of the roof slope of 10 ÷ 15 degrees, the distance between the battens of the sheathing is 400 ÷ 450 mm, and adjacent sheets are overlapped by one wave. The upper row should overlap the lower one by 200 ÷ 220 mm.
    • With a roof slope of more than 15 degrees, the lathing bars are fixed on the rafters on distance 550 ÷ 600 mm. The overlap of the sheets laid next to each other is made in one wave, and the upper to the lower row is superimposed by 170 ÷ 200 mm.

    To make it convenient to mark and fasten the lathing, it is cut out to the desired size, for example, 600 mm, which will help to carry out the installation of the frame under the roofing much faster.

    The order of fixing sheets

    It is very important to observe the sequence of laying the sheets if the covering will consist of two or more horizontal rows of corrugated board.

    • The installation of roofing material starts from the eaves. The extreme sheet is set strictly according to the building level, since the correct laying of all other elements of the roof will depend on its evenness. In addition, the sheets to be laid are aligned along the lower edge of the overhang - if this alignment method is excluded, the lower edge of the roof will be uneven.

    • At the end of the installation of the first row, the securing of the second begins from the same side of the roof from which the first was mounted. However, some masters practice a different approach - with sequential stacking of the bottom and then the top sheet, or with a “ladder” stacking - for example, two sheets from below - one on top, that is, the top row is constantly “lagging behind” by 1 sheet.

    The best option - if the length of the sheet is sufficient for the entire roof slope
    • If it is possible to purchase sheets equal to the length of the slope, then this option should be preferred - this will reduce the installation time, and the roof will be more reliably protected from leaks, since there will simply be no horizontal overlaps of the sheets.

    Rules for fastening corrugated board

    It is carried out using special self-tapping screws equipped with a press washer and a rubber gasket. To make the roof look aesthetically pleasing, self-tapping screws are usually matched to the color of the base material.

    • If the roof is covered with canvases that are integral along the length of the slope, then the first sheet is temporarily fixed at the top below the roof ridge by 50 mm and below, on the overhang. The sheet should protrude 40 ÷ 50 mm beyond the edge of the overhang. The upper left open distance will become a ventilation gap and will later be covered with a ridge element on top.
    • The second sheet is overlapped with the first one by one or two waves, depending on the slope, aligned with the overhang of the first sheet and screwed with a self-tapping screw.

    • Subsequent canvases are laid and aligned also along the overhang and fastened together at the crest of the wave. They are fastened from the eaves to the ridge with a screw-in step of 500 mm.

    • When 3 ÷ 5 sheets of corrugated board are laid, and they are aligned along the edge of the overhang, their capital fastening to the crate is carried out. The canvases are attached to the crate at the bottom of the wave, immediately after the overlap of the sheets, and then, passing one wave, along the bottom of the second.
    • If two or more horizontal rows are laid, then in the strip of their overlap they are fixed with self-tapping screws along the bottom of each wave.

    If a corrugated board with a polymer coating is mounted, then after screwing in the screws, it is recommended to remove the formed metal shavings in order to avoid damaging the protective coating of the roofing material. It is swept off the floor completely with a soft brush.

    It is also necessary to stipulate the requirement that the corrugated board should in no case be fixed on the crate with nails or rivets, since such fasteners will not hold the canvas in the event of a high wind load. The wind can easily rip off the roof covering, and the nails will remain in the sheathing bars.

    Installation of additional elements

    In addition to the corrugated sheets, the roofing structure contains other elements that help protect the structure from the penetration of precipitation into the attic. It should be noted that the presence of even one formed or uncovered gap in the roof can seriously damage the floor, as well as the walls and ceiling of the house.

    Additional elements of the roof include a ridge, valleys, cladding of pipes passing through the roof, cornice boards and others.

    Ridge attachment

    After completing the installation of corrugated sheets, at the highest point of the roof, its edges are covered with a ridge.

    The ridge is fixed with the same self-tapping screws, through the top of the waves of the flooring, with a step of 200 ÷ 300 mm. In order for the fastening to become reliable, it is necessary to foresee two longitudinal boards on both sides of the ridge when installing the lathing.

    When installing the ridge, it must not be pressed tightly to the highest point of the roof - there must be a ventilation gap between it and the inner surface of the ridge element.

    If a semicircular type of ridge is installed, then special plugs are installed and fixed on its end sides.

    Since the ridge is assembled from individual elements, they are also laid with an overlap. Simple ridge-shaped skates should have an overlap of 120 ÷ 150 mm, and semicircular (tiled) skates - 100 ÷ 120 mm, with their overlap along the stiffeners.

    Take advantage of our article.

    Finishing the gable part of the roof from corrugated board

    To eliminate the likelihood that the corrugated board will be blown off by the wind from the end side, the gap between the sheets and the crate is closed with wind corners or slats, which are superimposed on one side of the corrugated board, the other on the first rafter facing the end of the structure. The bar is also fixed with self-tapping screws with a pitch of 400 ÷ 500 mm.

    Facing the end part of the roof. 1 - wind bar, 2 - self-tapping screws

    Since the planks are also made up of separate elements, they are laid with an overlap of 70 ÷ 100 mm.

    Mount the cornice

    The cornice is installed before the deck of the main roofing material. It plays both a decorative role, closing the side connections of the rafter system, and a functional one, preventing splashes from falling from the roof into the drain to the wooden parts. In addition, brackets for laying the gutter are attached under the cornice or on top of it.

    • Most often, the gutter brackets are first fixed to the crate with self-tapping screws at a distance of 500 ÷ 600 mm from each other. They are lowered below the lathing by 100 ÷ 150 mm.
    • Then a gutter is installed on the brackets.
    • After that, a cornice strip is installed and nailed or screwed to the bottom board of the sheathing.

    • The sheets of corrugated board are laid on top of the eaves, and must be leveled in such a way that water, flowing from them, directly falls into the fixed gutter

    Installing the valley

    The installation of a valley is not required for every roof, but only where it has a complex configuration with profile fractures. If there is a conjugation of two planes with a downward angle, then you cannot do without mounting this element.

    Endova consists of two parts - inner and outer.

    • The inside of the valley is laid before the roof is laid. It is fixed to the joint of two roof planes and fixed to the lathing with roofing screws with a pitch of 350 ÷ 500 mm. Individual parts of the long valley are laid, starting from the cornice and going up to the ridge, with an overlap of 150 ÷ 200 mm.

    • After the sheets of corrugated board are laid (with a shift to the inner part of the valley by 80 ÷ 100 mm), a layer of porous sealant is placed between them and the inner part of the valley. This material will prevent leakage when it rains. Then the corrugated board through the bottom of the waves with a step of 400 ÷ 500 mm, together with the lower part of the valley, are screwed to the crate with self-tapping screws.
    • After that, silicone sealant is applied to the edges of the corrugated sheeting, and the outer part of the valley is laid on it. Just like the inner one, it is a composite one, so its parts are laid with an overlap of 100 mm, starting from the eaves and anointing the joints with a sealant.

    • After that, the outer part of the valley is screwed to the corrugated board with self-tapping screws.

    Fastening snow holder

    Snow holder- This is an element that will not allow a sharp snow fall from the roof in the spring, delaying it and giving time to melt and drain off or evaporate.

    Snow holders there are two types - these are a kind of straps in the form of corners, scrolling in a checkerboard pattern, or horizontal tubular barriers installed in special brackets.

    The brackets are attached to the surface of the corrugated board at a distance of 900 ÷ 1000 mm. Then, special tubes with threads along the edges are inserted into the holes in them, onto which, after their installation, metal plugs are screwed.

    Both brackets and strips snow holders are attached through the corrugated board to the crate. When fixing the planks, they are screwed through the top of the wave, therefore, gaps are formed between the plank and the corrugated board, through which the melt water will leave.

    Wall profile covering the joint between the wall and the corrugated board

    If the roof of the corrugated board adjoins the wall, then the joint between them must be closed in order to avoid leakage. For this, there is a special curly strip - a wall profile, which is mounted on the wall using anchor fasteners, and on the metal profile - with self-tapping screws screwed into the crest of the wave.

    Silicone sealant can be used to seal the strip-to-wall joint. In addition, it is advisable to make a groove in the wall in order to hide the upper curved edge of this profile in it. After installation, the strobe can be repaired, for example, with cement mortar or tile adhesive for outdoor use.

    Sealers for corrugated board

    Seals are used in roofing works to close gaps at the joints of the covering with the wall, in the places of "fractures" of hipped roofs and under the ridge.

    Seals usually have an adhesive layer on one side, covered with parchment, which is removed before installation, and the material is glued in the right place.

    Making the passage of the pipe through the corrugated board

    If a chimney of a stove or fireplace, or a ventilation duct passes through the covering made of corrugated board, then you will have to work on it. But before do work on the external finish of the joints, it is necessary to install around chimney inner apron which mounted before laying on the sheathing of the corrugated board.

    An apron is installed around the pipe from separate metal adjoining profiles. On the walls of the chimney, using a marker, a line is marked along which the strobe will be punched to bend the upper edge of the adjoining profiles into it. Then it must be thoroughly cleaned of dust and rinsed with water.

    After that, the so-called tie - stripe a metal sheet with flanges, which are mounted from the pipe to the cornice. A tie is necessary to drain water that collects behind the pipe during rain.

    After that, the lower part of the apron must be fixed for sealant, on crate and a tie laid on the sides of the pipe, and set the upper edge in the groove, also on the sealant. When installing the parts of the adjoining strip, they must overlap each other by 150 mm.

    After the internal work is completed, the installation of the corrugated board is carried out. When the roofing material is laid around the chimney, the outer apron strips are mounted, which are fixed on the pipe and on the corrugated board ridges on the roof.

    The general sequence of roofing with corrugated board

    So, knowing how to install all the additional elements and the corrugated board itself, you can consider the sequence of works on covering the roof with this roofing material.

    • The first step is to cover the rafter system. It is laid from the eaves, overlap horizontally by 100 ÷ 150 mm. The film is fixed with a stapler with staples on the rafter legs.
    • On top of the film, counter-lattice bars are nailed to the rafters, which will create the necessary ventilation gap between the film and the roofing material. The size of the blocks should be 400 × 500 mm, that is, the ventilation gap will be 400 mm.
    • Perpendicular to the counter-lattice, a crate of slopes is arranged. Here you need to provide additional ridge boards - they are located on both sides of the roof ridge. Also, additional boards or bars are mounted around the chimney and at the joints of the roof planes to fix the valley (corner inward) or ridge element (corner outward).
    • Further, wind boards are fixed on the gable sides of the roof.
    • Then the brackets for the drain gutter are fixed on the lower board of the lathing, and the gutter itself is laid.
    • A cornice strip is nailed to the extreme board of the sheathing.
    • The next step is to fix the inner part of the valley, if it is needed in the roof structure.
    • Then you can proceed to the arrangement of the chimney waterproofing. A tie is laid along its edges, going to the cornice - it is attached over the cornice strip. Further, are installed and sealed elements of the inner apron adjacent to the pipe.
    • Having dealt with the internal additional elements, which should be under the roofing material, proceed to the installation of corrugated sheets. To pass the pipe in one or two sheets, an opening of the required size is measured and cut out with the help of electric shears. The edges of the corrugated board should cover the parts of the apron fixed to the crate and come close to the pipe. Leaving a gap of 50 ÷ 70 mm is possible.
    • Further, at the junctions of two roof sections, the outer part of the valley is fixed.
    • After that, the metal elements of the ridge are fixed at the highest point of the roof.
    • The last step from the gable side to the corrugated board and the wind board is fixed windproof corner.

    So, as you can see, there is nothing supernatural in laying such a roof. Having studied the sequence of works and the technology of their execution, enlisting the assistance of reliable assistants, purchasing the necessary material, preparing the tools, you can safely start covering the roof with corrugated board on your own.

    And at the end of the publication - a useful video with the intricacies of the process of installing a roof from corrugated board.

    Video: important nuances when laying corrugated board as a roof

    It is possible to qualitatively cover the roof with corrugated board even in the absence of professional construction skills. It is only important to follow the technology of work and try to avoid common mistakes that can affect the result.

    The choice of corrugated board

    The advantages of this material are obvious:

    • low weight: overlapping the roof with corrugated board does not require reinforcement of the existing rafter system, building structures and foundations;
    • a reasonable ratio of cost and durability of the material: with proper installation, the roof can serve for more than 15 years;
    • aesthetics: corrugated board with a polymer colored coating allows you to create an attractive-looking roof;
    • practicality: simple galvanized sheets are an inexpensive solution for industrial buildings and outbuildings.

    It is extremely important to select a material with the required strength characteristics. In addition, it must be borne in mind that corrugated board with a capillary groove should be used as a roofing material, which contributes to effective drainage of rainwater when installing overlapping sheets. It is not recommended to save on material - in a cheap profiled sheet made of low-quality steel, the capillary groove is easily deformed under load and becomes useless. Such a roof cannot be cleared of snow in winter without damage or repaired if necessary.

    Galvanized sheet is the cheapest roof option, but it cannot be called attractive. Profiled sheeting with a protective and decorative polymer coating is in high demand. It is important to determine the requirements for the strength and durability of this coating. If you intend to use a profiled sheet for installation on a roof with a large slope of the slopes, then you can use a material with a polyester coating, since snow rolls off such a roof under its own weight and the risk of damage to the coating during cleaning is reduced. For roofs with a lower angle of inclination, it is recommended to purchase corrugated board with a much stronger outer layer of pural or PVDTF (polyvinyl difluoride), but in this case, covering the roof with corrugated board will cost more.

    How to avoid material damage in transit

    The corrugated sheet, made of steel sheet by the method of cold profiling, as a roof covering, has the necessary strength and the ability to withstand high snow and wind loads. But the sheets, individually, are highly susceptible to mechanical damage.

    Transportation and lifting of material to the installation site should be carried out taking certain precautions to prevent accidental damage to the corrugated board.

    Before covering the roof with corrugated board, the material should be delivered to the site. In this case, certain transportation rules must be observed. Deformation of the roofing material during loading and unloading operations or transportation will lead to the need to replace it and, as a result, to an increase in the cost of the roof. To make a reliable roof covering, you should use a profiled sheet with a thickness of 0.5 mm and more, made of high-quality steel.

    Basic transportation rules:

    1. Such material is transported in piles, laid on a solid, solid base, for example, on wooden logs, and the length of the logs must exceed the width of the sheet.
    2. When preparing for transportation, the load placed in the machine must be securely fastened with slings in order to avoid friction of the sheets between themselves and on neighboring objects - this can lead to damage to the protective coating.
    3. The recommended vehicle speed when transporting corrugated board is no more than 80 kilometers per hour.

    If the loading of the profiled sheet at the place of purchase is usually carried out by professionals using special equipment, then the unloading at the facility is often done manually on its own. To properly cover the roof with corrugated board, you should carefully transfer the sheets one by one. It is advisable to carry each sheet together.

    It is strictly forbidden to bend the corrugated board or move the sheets with a drag! It is almost impossible for a deformed sheet to return to its original geometry, and it becomes unusable for installation. Damage to the protective and decorative layer leads to a rapid onset of the corrosion process during the operation of the roof covering.

    The lifting of the corrugated board to the roof must also be carried out correctly. The technology of work is as follows:

    • do not lift the material in windy weather - this can lead to its damage;
    • it is recommended to stretch the logs from the ground to the roof, along which the sheets are lifted;
    • you can lift the corrugated board only one sheet at a time.

    Considering how to properly cover the roof with corrugated board, it can be noted that the work can be done quickly and efficiently by two people. At the same time, lifting the material to the roof is much more convenient and easier to carry out three of us. The technology of work on the installation of the coating can be found in the thematic video.

    How to avoid material damage during installation?

    How to properly cover the roof with corrugated board? If you have to mount the roof of a large enough area, that is, in the process of fixing the sheets, you will have to walk on the already laid material, first of all it is worth taking care of the shoes. It is required to wear shoes with soft soles that will not slip on the metal and will not damage its protective polymer layer. You can step on the roofing material only in those places where the sheet lies on the crate.

    If we cover the roof with corrugated board, then we should choose the right tool for performing installation work. The installation of this roofing material does not require the use of complex expensive equipment. It is enough to have:

    • screwdriver;
    • scissors for metal, capable of cutting steel up to 0.6 mm thick;
    • a hacksaw for metal with fine teeth;
    • electric scissors or jigsaw.
    It is not recommended to use electric welding or gas welding when installing corrugated board, since in this case there is a high probability of damage to the protective coating of the sheets.

    To avoid corrosion at the cutting sites of corrugated sheets, it is advisable to immediately treat the ends of the material with an anti-corrosion primer.

    Features of fastening corrugated board

    In the question of how to cover the roof with corrugated board, special attention is paid to fasteners. To securely attach the sheets to the lathing, it is best to use galvanized self-tapping screws with a drill at the end. The size of the fasteners is 4.8 × 35 mm. Each self-tapping screw must be equipped with a special neoprene gasket that protects the attachment point from moisture. Self-tapping screws must be screwed into the wave at its bottom, adjacent to the crate. When attaching the ridge, the self-tapping screw is screwed through the top of the wave. Manufacturers of corrugated board often offer self-tapping screws with caps painted in the color of the selected roofing material, which increases the aesthetics of the finished roof.
