How to use a grater correctly. Mechanical grater for vegetables, fruits, cheese, nuts. How to choose the best vegetable grater

Testing the 6-sided grater.

Let's consider the main indicators. Let's note the distinctive characteristics, highlight the advantages.

The total length of the grater is 23 cm. It is a fairly compact size that allows you to store the grater in a convenient place (at hand).

The grater comes with a plastic container that can be used in two versions. The first option is to fix the grater directly on the container and grate the food directly into the container. The second option is the storage of already grated products in the container itself.

The grater has six faces for working with food, each facet corresponds to its size and is designed for cooking the product of the desired size according to the recipe's requirement.

The first facet: Classic. It is very convenient for rubbing food in ideally small leaves (droplets) with rounded edges on both sides. Thickness 5 mm,

The second facet has almost the same shape as the first garnet, but much smaller in size.

(width no more than 2 mm). Designed for finely rubbing food.

The third side is very interesting, it is intended for rubbing the product with wide and flat pieces with additional reflexion. Raw potatoes or zucchini are rubbed very well and beautifully, very unusual pieces are obtained.

Overall width 40 mm (4 cm).

The fourth facet is special and consists of a large number of small stars. It is very convenient for rubbing the product in a very small version. For example, on this edge it is good to grate garlic or ginger. At the exit, you get an almost ready-made gruel. The sprockets are located throughout the entire face area, which is very convenient, since you can rub the product during the main and return movement.

Fifth facet. A very popular slicing option. Cuts vegetables and fruits into a very thin layer (making the slices almost transparent). This type of slicing is very popular for making vegetable or fruit salads. It can also be used, for example, for cutting potato chips.

Sixth facet. For those who like to rub with straws. Double cutter, total width 5mm. The incisors are located in two directions, which is very convenient when rubbing, since without lifting your hand you cut both forward and backward. For example, if you arrange carrots along its length along the plane of the grater, and rub on this edge, then you get the option "Korean Carrots"

And a separate topic, but no less significant, is the container that comes with a grater. The container can be used in two versions. When rubbing food, when you attach the grater down the container. This is very convenient, since what you rub immediately goes into this container.

It is important to note that the container does not have to be wound in a separate location. It is very conveniently inserted into the grater itself and does not take up additional space.

Grate hard cheese for pizza, fresh carrots for a Korean dish with spices, ginger root for aromatic tea, a little lemon zest for homemade pie - these operations for grinding different types of food require the use of different types of graters: with curly notches, from different materials, excellent area and design. Despite the fact that the purpose of any grater is the same - to grind products for their further preparation, the choice of this requires no less attention from the hostess than preparing a dish according to a new recipe, where it is necessary to observe all proportions, stages and processes.

The category of such irreplaceable, practical and functional kitchen utensils as "graters" has many options: universal accessories, specialized (designed for a particular type of food) and for curly cutting of vegetables and fruits to decorate ready-made meals. In order not to stumble on the "thorny path" when choosing a suitable grater, let's get acquainted with its varieties:

  1. Universal model It is made in the form of a rectangle, cone or polyhedron, each side of which has notches of different shapes and sizes. The model is easy to use for chopping fruits, cheese, raw and cooked vegetables.
  2. For Korean carrots. It is made in the form of a single sheet of plastic, metal or wood and has two rows of notches that "cut" the carrots into thin, long strips necessary for preparing a spicy Asian dish.
  3. For making mashed potatoes. The model has a large number of notched holes and is made mainly of plastic. allows you to quickly prepare mashed potatoes by "pushing" boiled potatoes, carrots, beets, pumpkins or other vegetables or fruits through the holes.
  4. For parmesan. The product has a convex surface and makes it easy to grate a popular variety of cheese, as a result, the resulting mass does not stick together, remains airy, crumbly and light.
  5. For ginger root. The model is made in the form of a spoon with a plastic handle. Strong metal cloth withstands the rigidity of the ginger root and will allow you to grate it in the required amount for making tea, baking, and other dishes.
  6. Shredder for fresh cabbage. This kitchen appliance is equipped with straight blades in one or two rows. It allows you to chop not only cabbage, but also cut into thin slices potatoes for making homemade chips, carrots or beets.

Despite the fact that graters have different designs and are designed for different types of products, they have similar advantages:
  1. High speed of work: any housewife will rub the necessary ingredients much faster than she will cut them with a knife by hand. In addition, as a result of using a grater, pieces of the same shape and size will be obtained, which increases the aesthetics of the future dish.
  2. Accuracy. The grater can be placed immediately on a plate and all the contents after grinding will be on it, without the need to use excess dishes and then wash them.
  3. Safe and easy to clean. Products do not corrode, do not come into contact with food and are easy to clean by hand or in the dishwasher.
If you need to grate a small amount of food, you do not need to use a food processor, blender or other bulky cooking equipment, just take a compact grater with which you can easily grind the required ingredients.

closer and closer, which means we will soon decide what can be done with them.

If the tomatoes are slightly wrinkled or slightly overripe, puree them! Just grate the vegetable on a coarse grater (the skin can be peeled off for the perfect consistency). Mix the resulting puree with minced garlic, finely chopped basil and extra virgin olive oil. Do not forget to salt and pepper - this is instant tomato sauce without heat treatment. Depending on the thickness, use it for pasta or spread it on toasted toast, here you go bruschetta... You can mix it with natural yogurt - it's also delicious.

Pancake potatoes

Coarsely grated raw potatoes

Zucchini for the wettest chocolate cake

You probably know that the secret to making the wettest chocolate cake is zucchini (or squash). When you add grated zucchini to the dough for chocolate cake or muffins, they, slowly releasing moisture, perfectly moisturize baked goods. Only rub the vegetable using the smallest holes in the grater. Grate the dark chocolate finely and use the resulting crumb to decorate the cake. Chocolate will definitely benefit these baked goods.

Coarse zucchini for pancakes

Bread for perfect crumbs

Grate the crusty bread, dried in a toaster or fried in a dry frying pan, on a grater (large or small - depending on the further use) and there are crumbs in front of you. What to do with them? Use for breading vegetables and shrimps, add to fried eggplant or pasta, sprinkle on baked vegetables for crunchiness. And if you freeze a white roll in the freezer, and then grate it on a coarse grater, you get a super breading for fire cutlets !

Butter for shortcrust pastry

For shortcrust pastry it is convenient to use frozen or at least chilled butter. How about grated frozen butter?

If you rub the butter and use it for the dough, you will create the effect of imitating an old pastry technique called fraisage. For her, the "heel" of the hand was placed on the dough and smoothed / kneaded with a movement away from you. With this molding, the butter was distributed more evenly, more air pockets were formed in the dough and the cake was more flaky and crunchy. Small, long, thin pieces of grated frozen butter will also create "pockets" and improve the quality of the crust, bringing it to a flaky, delicate and crumbly structure.

Probably, any housewife will agree that sharp graters are no less appreciated in the kitchen along with sharp knives. After all, no matter what dish we take, we often have to grind and rub something.

Despite the fact that now many electric grinders, blenders, food processors and meat grinders with special shredding attachments "have settled" in the kitchen, the most ordinary graters are still appreciated. They are much easier to wash, they do not take up much space, and to be honest, I myself often prefer to use a regular grater than to take out and lay out a special technique.

I talked about what kind of electric graters I use in an article about kitchen helpers. And this time I will share what kind of graters I use most often, what you should pay attention to when choosing a grater, and what these graters are.

Square and hex graters

Every housewife has such a grater in the kitchen. On average, the grater is enough for 3-4 years, and then it is advisable to replace it. I bought similar graters from different companies and realized that such a grater is not worth saving.

Cheap options bent, scratched hands, slid across the table. The better the material from which such a grater is made, the more it will serve you. It will not work to sharpen it like a knife, so a dull grater will have to be replaced.

I try to choose a grater with a non-slip handle and a special insert that prevents slipping on the table - this is very convenient and reduces the risk of injury.

Such graters also exist hex, but to be honest, I only use 2-3 edges, so I stick to the principle "less is more." Some models are equipped with additional containers that can be easily folded into the grater itself and do not take up space. When you work with such a container, the table is clean, everything is collected in a container. It is easy to pour the grated vegetables into the skillet or wherever you want, and you can also put it in the refrigerator, covering it with the lid from the set. I often grate my carrots for soup and refrigerate them quickly and conveniently.

Special grater for cheese and zest

Another favorite grater is incredibly practical and easy to use. It is intended for cheese, citrus zest, nuts, ginger, chocolate, garlic and nutmeg, so it will replace many special graters. It has an ergonomic grip for a comfortable grip.

At the ends there are rubber plugs that prevent sliding on the countertop and scratching the dishes. A plastic cover is provided to protect the grater, so it can be easily stored in the kitchen cabinet without fear of injuring your hands. Perhaps this is the most convenient grater in my arsenal. It is made of stainless steel and is dishwasher safe. The teeth are quite sharp, but it is easy to adapt to it. The prices for such graters, in my opinion, are incredibly overpriced, but still it is a high-quality grater for many years.

Graters with boxes and interchangeable nozzles

Such graters save space in the kitchen. Such graters are easy to store and wash, when folded, all attachments are stored in the container itself, which means they do not need to be fished out of the bowels of the cabinet.

You can use just one attachment by rubbing, for example, cheese directly into a dish. I often use this grater if I need to grate a little product or it is desirable to do it directly into a dish on the stove or on the table (for example, a piece of chocolate for cake, dessert or coffee).

And one more undoubted advantage of such a grater is that when working with flying or coloring products, everything remains more or less clean, unlike conventional graters. As you can see, the grater is dirty, but the table is clean.

These graters are also available in the mini version. They are intended for chocolate, nuts, cheese, garlic.

Convenient to use: grated cheese, closed with a lid and placed in the refrigerator in the same container, you can use it as needed.

Börner graters

Separately, I would like to tell you about the German graters "Börner" . Before purchasing this orange shredder, I bought a regular, cheaper analog shredder. It was very similar in appearance, but was much cheaper at a price. And I decided not to pay more.

Imagine my surprise when at home this grater practically refused to rub the potatoes into thin slices of fries. My husband and I conjured around her until we bent the flimsy blades. And I realized that the price of German graters is probably not just that high. After getting this grater-shredder, I was convinced that the difference is huge. You do not need to make any effort with it, on the contrary: you cannot treat it rudely, otherwise injuries cannot be avoided. The blades are so sharp that cutting the food is easy.

This is how she slices the potatoes.

This grater has three interchangeable plates: for slicing or shredding cabbage (two different slice thicknesses), for thin strips and thick sticks. Replaceable panels are attached securely until they click, so nothing will fall off during operation. One of the plates acts as a plug, which prevents cuts during storage of the grater.

Separately, you can purchase a special bowl for this shredder, to which the grater is securely attached. It's incredibly convenient to work with. Nothing flies anywhere. This bowl is especially necessary when shredding cabbage in large quantities, for example, for pickling.

I cannot but say that the grater is so sharp that it is simply impossible to work with it without a special fruit holder. Vegetables or fruits are fixed on special pins on the back of the holder. But I confess honestly, I did not quite succeed in making friends with this fruit-holder. Hard vegetables tend to slip off, you have to hold them or reattach them. Several times I tried to rub without this gadget, but it is quite dangerous for hands and manicure.

Since my husband is very fond of Korean carrots, I also bought a special attachment. On it, you can make long and short thin straws without much difficulty. Of all the carrot graters I have, this is the best.

Grater "BABY-GRATER"

If you have a baby (or just planned), take a closer look at grater "BABY-GRATER" with very small plastic teeth. It is intended for baby food, because the blades do not oxidize food, which means it is safe for the baby.

This grater will easily turn an apple into puree or grate the necessary vegetables and fruits for salad, as well as diet food, while retaining all the juice. Double-sided grater - with larger and very fine teeth. The side with large teeth does a great job with cheese, garlic, carrots, apples, chocolate, citrus zest, beets, cucumbers, radishes, turning them into air chips. The fine-toothed side processes foods in mashed potatoes or pancake mash, but does a great job with chocolate and other foods that need to be crushed. You can take such a grater with you on trips and it will replace a bunch of equipment.

Perhaps this gadget cannot be attributed to graters, but it can become excellent an alternative to the French fries grater... In addition, it will help grind boiled vegetables for salads. But this device has one significant drawback - the plastic case, which, even with careful treatment, can crack, which happened to me.

Mini graters

I can not pass by such "puppet" miniature graters, which can fulfill not only a practical role, but also a decorative one. They are often made with magnets so that they can be attached to the refrigerator or other equipment. On a small grater, I grate chocolate in cocoa so as not to stain the large grater, but the garlic grater is especially idle. I believe that you can safely do without it if you have a good garlic press. If not, then feel free to take it: your hands do not smell like garlic, and she rubs quite well too.

These are the graters that live in my kitchen. Some I like more, some less, but still I came to the conclusion that it is not worth saving on a good grater. It's great when graters can be bought in one set or from one series, it will look more aesthetically pleasing, but in any case, good graters will make your stay in the kitchen more enjoyable and will save you a lot of time.
