The best shape and lighting for the ceiling. DIY ceiling lighting with LED strip. LED backlight placement options

Already 3 years have passed since the commissioning of the newly built house. At first I did a simple DIY repair. Now the house has sat down, the walls have warmed up and some defects have appeared. Two large cracks 6 meters long appeared on the ceiling at the joints of the slabs along the entire room.

The wife began to demand repairs, but there are many modern and interesting finishing options and she cannot decide. I decided to make the ceiling lighting with an LED strip with my own hands.

I read about editing on other sites, but useless dregs are written there, because they are written by authors who do not understand this and have never done it. You still have to explain the subtleties and advantages to your wife, so I decided to do it in writing, you will also be interested.
I recommend reading it first:

Types of ceilings

Consider the main popular types for the home:

  • tension;
  • suspended plasterboard, rack, cassette;
  • suspended-tension, hybrid of plasterboard and tension;
  • single-level and two-level.

Tensioner - a modern and practical look, quick to install. A big plus is the glossy surface and transparency of the film, the gloss reflects the luminous flux better.

The use from the inside looks trumpy. If you have a fantasy, then for example you can do:

  • starry sky, looks gorgeous at night;
  • the logo of your sports team or car;
  • even a simple drawing with palm trees and the sea.

Of all the types, I chose a tension one, with a preliminary fastening of sound insulation under the film.

Plasterboard and suspended-tension will be quite optimal for a single-level project. In my apartment, the neighbors from above are perfectly audible, especially since they have 2 small children, they can knock on the floor at 3 in the morning, we have it like a drum. Soundproof mats can be placed under the drywall, which cannot be done on a stretch board, without gluing.

Two-level ceilings look interesting from the design side, but they have a much higher complexity of execution and a large amount of plasterwork. I can afford them without much damage, my height is 280 cm, which is higher than the usual 250 cm. They look beautiful, but from the point of view of practicality, there will simply be additional costs. After a couple of weeks, you will no longer be paying attention to him. This amount I can spend more profitably than on useless design decoration.

Types of lighting and illumination

Functions that it can perform when placed on a ceiling or top of walls.

  1. decorative white;
  2. decorative one-color or color RGB;
  3. basic lighting;
  4. auxiliary, complementary to the main, such as low beam in a car;

I wanted a combined type. Good and beautiful chandeliers are expensive, and they no longer fit into modern design, they look outdated. Classic, these are built-in lamps and light around the perimeter of the room.

Solid fill inside the second level, photo of the room at home

In order not to lay a powerful diode tape and an expensive aluminum profile around the perimeter, I think to place Leda of medium power to perform the function of not bright lighting. For bright light in the center of the room, install a recessed ceiling LED panel under Armstrong, which, with dimensions of 60 by 60 cm, shines at 3600 lm., Has a thickness of only 1 cm.For me, the cost of such a led panel will be about 1000 rubles.

Why exactly a panel? - in fact, I do not need bright illumination of every corner, besides, my walls are light colored, the light will be reflected. It will shine as efficiently as possible only downward; there will be a lot of light on the floor for children to play.

Choosing a diode tape

For backlighting it is better to use either 5050, which does not require an aluminum profile for cooling. Its power should not exceed 10 W / m.

For white, the optimal density on SMD 5050 will be 60 diodes per meter. The actual power may differ in one direction or another; you can find out it only by measuring the current consumption. 5050 LEDs can be inexpensive at 13 Lm, and increased brightness at 19 Lm, labeled as LUX (High class) luxury. It already has a consumption of 14-15 watts.
The average brightness with 13Lm diodes will be 800 Lm / m. which corresponds to a 60-75W incandescent lamp. With 19lm led diodes. brightness at 1 m. 1150 lm., This is the equivalent of a conventional 90W light bulb.

Do not buy on the little popular SMD LEDs 3014, 7020, 3020. There is a high probability of purchasing components of low quality and with overestimated technical characteristics.

The figures show the most common installation distances, there are no special installation requirements, you can safely experiment until a satisfactory result is obtained. The laid light source does not need to be fixed, which will allow it to be moved in the future.

Var. No. 1 provides more intense lighting not only of the stretch ceiling, but also of the room. By moving the tab inside the box, you can adjust the width of the backlight in the room.
Var. # 2, creates the effect of a floating ceiling, looks especially good with a light blue sky.

Var. # 3 is used to create light stripes from the inside. You can put, for example, a simple drawing or the Volkswagen logo.
Var. No. 4, makes the backlight inside the stretch over the entire area. A small box on the sides will visually enlarge the illuminated surface. A simpler and more practical way, this is to mount directly on the wall, also looks decent, but a matter of taste.

Additional ways

Var. No. 5, suitable for general led room lighting.
Var. No. 6, the lower profile is mounted overhead in the form of an LED lamp on a plasterboard surface. Replacement with a ceiling plinth is possible.

Var. No. 7, because of the complex shape of the cornices, ice is usually placed on the wall.
Var. No. 8, the plinth is fixed 50 -70 mm lower. and the light source is placed on it. This is a budget installation, any cheap skirting board will do, not necessarily polyurethane. The glow angle of the LED is 120 degrees, therefore, with this arrangement, it will not dazzle and will practically not be visible.

Var. No. 9, two-level tension plasterboard box
Var. No. 10, visually increases the height by illuminating the wall.

False ceiling lighting, video

The installation of the light source is closely related to the installation of the entire structure. In the video, experts will show in detail the sequence of mounting a two-level suspended ceiling from the very beginning. The main lighting will be done on recessed luminaires, and the strip source will be used for decorative purposes.

Accessories and connection

List of required materials for installation:

  • ceiling plinth, polyurethane cornice, plasterboard;
  • power unit;
  • dimmer or RGB controller, with or without remote control;
  • connectors for connection;
  • cable for a 220V network.

Polyurethane cornices

The optimal and simple way to illuminate a stretch ceiling is to use polyurethane cornices, moldings, fillets, baseboards. The cornices are quite expensive and are sold in 2 meter lengths and have many types of finishes, stucco moldings, drawings, and are suitable for painting.

For complex design forms it is produced in a flexible form, but it costs 2 times more, it is marked as FLEX skirting board. The cost of the Russian Europlast is from 350 to 900 rubles / m.

A more affordable price from Chinese manufacturers, the length of the products is 240 cm. To compare, you will need to calculate the price per meter. On average, 400 r / m. for flexible, and 200-250 p. for the usual.

If the power consumption is high and you want to hide the power supply behind a cornice, then use several smaller power supplies.

Ceiling lighting in the living area contributes to the creation of coziness. The design decision for interior decoration can be ambiguous, the main thing is that the apartment is light. In this article, you will learn what kind of ceiling lighting is, how to place lighting fixtures, and also about the elementary rules for their construction.

Advantages and disadvantages of a luminous ceiling

Having started repairs in an apartment, you should not ignore the ceiling. After all, this is a space for the flight of your imagination. The ceiling structure can be decorated by originally installing a lighting system in it, thereby transforming the interior of the room as a whole.

Ceiling space lighting encompasses the following benefits:

  • used spotlights are economical;
  • the design solution is diverse;
  • no need to pre-treat the surface before installation;
  • the device of lighting devices is allowed in any form;
  • the creation of an optical increase in the space of the room;
  • the ability to reconfigure devices, depending on the degree of luminescence;
  • stretch ceiling with built-in lamps has been in operation for a long time;
  • simple cleaning and creating comfort.

Ceiling lighting can be quite original

The disadvantages include:

  • light sources should be at least 10 cm below the ceiling level, therefore, in an apartment with a low wall height, their device is not recommended;
  • ceiling lighting does not change after ceiling installation;
  • when installing lighting devices on your own, difficulties may arise;
  • during work, the technology should be observed so that there are no defects.

It is always better to entrust the installation of lighting devices to specialists.

Types of ceiling lighting

Lighting is not only the creation of warmth and comfort in the room, but also a design solution. Ceiling lighting can be performed using various types of devices. Before choosing one or another type of lighting fixture, you need to determine which ones are optimal for your ceiling.

Suspension

A suspended ceiling is a structure that is installed at a considerable distance from the concrete base. Therefore, this type of ceiling is only suitable for large rooms with a high ceiling level. However, this has its advantages. So, in suspended ceilings it is possible to install a variety of lighting fixtures, there is plenty to choose from.

To illuminate the suspended ceiling, it is advisable to use the following lighting fixtures:

  • Spotlights;
  • LED strips and panels;
  • flat chandeliers;
  • pendant recessed luminaires;
  • fiber optic light sources.

Designers note that the lighting in the false ceiling will be original when using several lamps of different types.

Tension

If a large number of different lamps can be used for a suspended ceiling, then with a stretch canvas, things are much more complicated. The fact is that the PVC film, which is stretched under the base, does not have super strength and heat resistance. Hence, we can conclude that it is simply impossible to hang a heavy chandelier directly on this canvas - the film will immediately break. Also, you can not install lamps with conventional incandescent lamps, otherwise there is a risk of melting of the film area next to the device.

To equip the tensioning web, it is allowed to use such electric lighting devices as:

  • LED spotlights (recessed);
  • suspended and specially designed chandeliers for this type of ceiling;
  • LED strips and fluorescent devices.

Spotlights are most often used in stretch ceilings

Concrete or wood

Lighting a wooden or concrete ceiling can be done with different types of fixtures. There are no restrictions here. In such bases, the installation of devices on a hook, anchor or dowel is provided, which are securely fixed in the ceiling. You can hang even the heaviest chandelier and not worry.

The lighting system for a concrete base can be fitted with chandeliers with conventional incandescent bulbs. Both pendant and ceiling-mounted luminaires are suitable. The LED strip along the perimeter of the ceiling will also look good.

Both chandeliers and built-in devices, such as spotlights, are suitable for wooden bases. However, they are impractical to use, since the installation process becomes more complicated.

Luminous stretch ceiling as the main solution

Often, professional designers equip general lighting in a stretch ceiling. It looks very impressive, it seems as if the ceiling is weightless. With the help of a stretch canvas and competent lighting, you can create the effect of the night sky, and if a pure white pvc film is used, then there will be a bright glow of the entire ceiling space.

Simple and unusual at the same time

There are some nuances in the stretch ceiling and its lighting:

  • The use of PVC cloth with 50% transparency, which practically does not differ from transparent film.
  • To make a luminous ceiling, install an LED strip or spotlights in the space between the concrete base and the stretch canvas itself.
  • There are several varieties of tape: it is available in both white and other colors.

Types of lamps for lighting the ceiling

Modern lighting today is diverse and the consumer market offers a variety of lighting options. These are not only ordinary chandeliers and spotlights, but also lighting made by track systems, flexible designs. When choosing lighting, you should pay attention to the characterizing parameters of the room, for example, the height and area indicators, as well as its purpose.

Chandeliers

The most commonly used type of room lighting fixtures are chandeliers. They are classified into:

  • Suspended. Direct the light stream straight down. Usually, such a suspension is carried out on a cord, chain or other material.

  • Ceiling. These devices shine upward, evenly distributing the light flux. There are different shapes (round, square, rectangular), and are attached directly to the ceiling using a plank.

  • Classic. The device of these devices is the most common, many lamps are used, and the main structural elements are made of metal, glass, fabric or crystal. Suspended from a hook in the ceiling.

Ceiling lighting includes spotlights. The number of this type of lamp is set by calculation, based on the power indicator of the devices. Spot lighting can act both as the main one and as an additional one.

The subdivision of spotlights is made according to:

  • installation method - built-in, suspended or surface-mounted;
  • type of lamps - halogen, LED, fluorescent, incandescent lamps;
  • execution - can be both rotary and non-rotary.

Track systems

These are kind of lamps fixed on rails - the so-called busbar trunking. The structure can have several locations, depending on the design. Fixing to the ceiling is carried out on special cables and is adjustable to different heights.

It is worth noting that the voltage indicator of light sources can be either 12V or 220 V. The latter are distinguished by their simple installation and safety during operation.

Flexible luminaires

This is another type of lighting that is most often used as supplemental lighting. Such lamps can be used in any part of the interior, due to their flexibility, they can be installed in the ceiling structure of any shape, and also have a soft glow.

The glowing effect is created:

  • duralight cords;
  • LED strips;
  • neon tubes.

They can be easily fixed to a stretch ceiling, used to decorate a plasterboard ceiling. With a competent approach, the fixed tape serves for a rather long time and the structure does not need to be specially serviced. It is still worth making the main lighting, even when using this option of lighting devices.

Ceiling lighting ideas for different rooms

Today, there are many ways to decorate a ceiling using light. When choosing, one should take into account the purpose of the room, and what characteristics the lighting devices have.

Corridor

  • With a low ceiling, the placement of lamps is recommended with a given direction of light on the walls and upward, in order to increase the volume of the room.
  • If the ceiling level is below average, the original lighting effects are achieved using halogen fixtures.
  • To expand the space, you should embed and mount the lamps so that the light hits the walls.
  • If the ceiling level is high, then you can install several hanging lighting devices, so the light will fall on the floor.

Kitchen

The main or general lighting required for this room is used, additional - local in the form of spotlights, wall sconces. The first type is usually used to illuminate the entire area, and the second at the place of preparation or meal.

Bedroom

Before installing lighting fixtures, you need to make sure where the bed will be located, the laying of the wire depends on this. The main lighting is recommended in the center of the room, you can use an ordinary chandelier, and hang a night lamp with a halogen lamp on the wall by the bed.

Living room

The main lighting element can be a chandelier located in the center of the room, but it is important to take into account the parameters of the area and the height of the ceiling. If the room is large, then the overall chandelier will look original. If the living room is small, then the ceiling can be decorated with built-in lamps to visually expand the space.

Bathroom

The ideal solution would be matte or transparent shades. If the ceiling level is very high, then you can hang the chandelier, and if it is not high, then it is enough to fix the lamps to the walls. It is worth noting that the selected materials from colored glass will not be the best option, since the light stream will be distorted.

Balcony

There is little space on this site, so you can use:

  • small table lamp;
  • ceiling light source;
  • wall sconce arrangement.

Usually, for lighting on a balcony or loggia, the choice is given in favor of devices intended for the street.

Spotlight in detail

Spot lighting built into a suspended or suspended ceiling has become popular today. The types of lamps used are practical and have been used for a long time. The spot light is scattered evenly over the entire area, which ensures normal illumination.

Key Features

Placed spotlights on a suspended or stretch ceiling illuminate a small area. The scattering angle does not exceed 30 0. Therefore, these devices should be placed close to each other. The streams of light are in the shape of a cone, which means that they must intersect at the same level, which is above all objects and furniture.

Pros and cons

Benefits of spotlights:

  • can be used to highlight certain places;
  • have low power consumption;
  • can be installed anywhere;
  • are small in size;
  • emit a fairly bright light;
  • the ability to perform in different colors.

There are also disadvantages:

  • the complexity of the design;
  • use of additional power supplies;
  • should not be used for low ceilings;
  • if overheated, defects may remain on the suspended ceiling.

Luminaire placement

Spotlights can be positioned in different ways, it all depends on the functionality of the room and the design idea. But most often the following lamp placement options are chosen:

  • parallel to each other;

  • along the perimeter of the ceiling;

  • in the form of an arc;

  • circle or square;

  • cross;

  • staggered.

How to calculate the number of fixtures

To calculate the number of point lighting fixtures, it is necessary to measure the ceiling area. So, with a lamp power of 35 W, 1.5 m 2 can be illuminated (20 W is illuminated by 1 m 2). With additional creation of lighting, for example, a chandelier, the number of spotlights is reduced.

Illumination standards are presented in Suites per 1m²

It is worth noting that there are types of spotlights equipped with a rotary mechanism or with a lamp inside, this allows you to increase the scattering angle. Based on this, fewer luminaires can be purchased.

Minimum distance

When choosing spot lighting devices, consider the following:

  • a distance of at least 20 cm must be maintained from the walls to the lamps;
  • leave at least 30 cm between the devices themselves;
  • the distance from the seam of the PVC film must also be more than 20 cm;
  • one lamp will illuminate an area of 1.5 m 2.

These requirements must be met so that overheating does not occur, and, accordingly, the integrity of the material is not violated (in the case of a stretch ceiling - pvc film).

Spot lighting in different rooms

Spot lighting is used in absolutely any room, not only in the living room, bedroom, but also in the hallway, bathroom, bathroom and corridor. This is the best solution if the area of the apartment is small. But here it is worth considering that spotlights should be installed in a tension or suspended ceiling structure, and it is not suitable for any room.

Before installing such lamps, it is necessary to make markings on a film or drywall sheet, taking into account:

  • ceiling area;
  • the purpose of the room;
  • general design;
  • the number of chandeliers and sconces available.

Hallway

The light should be saturated with bright colors, but not to such an extent that the light hits the eye. The best option is to create diffused light. Spotlights can be arranged in numerous beams, and a chandelier can be placed in the center.

Kitchen

For any owner, light in the kitchen is a must. It is necessary to maintain the distance between the lighting devices, and also calculate their power. When choosing an additional light source, the number of main lamps must be reduced.

Living room

One of the solutions when decorating a living room is the use of combined lighting. Spotlights are evenly spaced relative to the main light source or around the perimeter, here you need to take into account the possibility of power regulation.

Bedroom

So that the light is not striking, it is recommended to place spotlights on the steps of the ceiling or along its perimeter. It is better to set the number of lamps less than it turned out in the calculations. It is recommended to use a dimmer for dimming.

Children

Lighting is created by point light sources over the workplace of children, for example, where they are painting or doing other creative work. In addition, with the help of spotlights of different powers and light, you can create an imitation of a fairy tale for children.

Bathroom

To illuminate this room, no more than two spotlights are sufficient, since the area usually does not exceed 5 m 2. Everything is determined by calculation. Under any circumstances, it should be borne in mind that a sealed design of lighting devices is important and the use of halogen lamps would be an ideal solution.

Options for stretch ceilings

This type of ceiling is equipped with several types of lamps. A distinctive feature is only the depth of installation of live parts. The use of cut-in lighting devices is most relevant, and a ring is fixed around the lamps to avoid tearing the film.

Above ceiling level

Lighting fixtures installed above the ceiling create a glowing effect from the inside. This will look great, but it has a number of disadvantages:

  • the area is not fully illuminated;
  • possible strong heating of the lamps;
  • the need to use LED lamps.

Ceiling level

Recessed spotlights are installed directly into the ceiling structure itself. Lighting of the space is carried out, depending on the idea. But the light scattering factor is quite high. You cannot install lamps with a power of more than 35 W, and a transformer must be installed.

Below level and overhead

The main distinguishing characteristic of such lighting is a large percentage of light scattering. This category includes spotlights that are also built into a suspended or tensioned structure, but the lighting element extends beyond the ceiling. They can have glass shades, hanging decorative elements.

For the installation of surface-mounted luminaires, a special base is used, which allows the use of lamps of different power indicators.

Other options

With fiber optic spotlights, you can create a simulated starry sky. Two-level stretch ceilings with additional lighting are quite original in their solution. It is worth considering that when choosing lamps of the mignon type, one element is installed at the rate of 2 m 2.

Unusual lighting placement ideas

Creative ideas can be used to create a new lighting project.

Lighting is an important part of any interior. Today there are a great variety of chandeliers, lamps, floor lamps and sconces with which you can refresh and complete many environments. One of the most common and common are ceiling lamps. Let's talk about them in more detail.

Kinds

There are several types of ceiling lighting.

  • Today, overhead linear ceiling lighting is very popular. Luminaires of similar design are simple, continuous lines. They can be used both as primary and secondary lighting. With the help of such details, you can create a very interesting composition, since linear lighting fixtures can intersect with each other at any angle. Especially interesting are the light compositions moving from the ceiling to the wall.
  • For a multi-level ceiling, it is necessary to correctly select beautiful lighting. For example, for a stylish two-level ceiling, you can purchase a chandelier that matches the style, spotlights, special directional light bulbs, as well as economical LED or neon strips. A two-level ceiling covering with large lamps will look organically only in spacious rooms.
  • Ceiling spotlights can be used for indoor lighting. Such lighting fixtures are more powerful. Most often they can be found in museums, at exhibitions, in gyms, shopping centers, etc. The most popular are LED specimens. They are distinguished by their economy and bright light.

  • Today, one of the most common are recessed spotlights. They are usually compact in size. They can be installed in both hard and stretch ceilings. The main advantages of such lighting are its affordable cost and discreet design. Such specimens are used to decorate any room, be it a cozy living room or a small ceiling of a bathroom.
  • Suspended ceiling chandeliers look harmonious in many interiors. They can have a wide variety of shapes and sizes. The choice of these lighting fixtures largely depends on the layout of the room and the height of the ceiling. For example, for a room with low ceilings, you should not choose a chandelier that is too bulky. Visually, it will reduce the already modest space. A large luxury chandelier can be hung in a spacious room. With the help of such a detail, you can complete the interior.
  • The most flexible are flexible luminaires. These include bright neon tubes of different lengths, duralight cords and LED strips. Such elements can be installed under a stretch ceiling, between different levels of the ceiling and plasterboard structures, as well as along the ceiling plinths. The installation of these lighting fixtures can be done by hand. It will not take a lot of time and effort. It is worth noting the durability of flexible systems. They do not consume a lot of electricity and do not require maintenance.
  • Not so long ago, track lighting structures began to be used to decorate home interiors. Initially, they were supplemented by shopping centers and office spaces, but today they are often found in home environments. Such structures consist of a system of luminaires attached to a busbar - a rail of no more than 3 m in length. The rails are fastened in a specific combination using various connecting parts of different shapes.

  • The most popular are L-shaped, straight, cruciform and rectangular designs. They are attached directly to the ceiling and descend using special cables. Several different lighting fixtures can be located on one base at once.
  • Track lights on rails have a modern design. Such options are used to decorate any room: from the kitchen to the bedroom. They are available in different shapes and sizes. Most often, these options are made of metal and are ceiling holders of various sizes with shades attached to them. This kind of lighting looks organic in modern interiors. Classical ensembles should not be supplemented with such lamps.

Lamps

The following types of lamps are suitable for indoor lighting:

  • conventional incandescent lamps;
  • economical LED bulbs;
  • flexible lighting systems;
  • neon lamps. Such devices are most often used for background lighting;
  • fluorescent lamps;
  • Spotlights;
  • halogen lamps. If there is hidden lighting in the ceiling, then it can be combined with both spot and halogen lamps.

Unusual lighting options

With the help of high-quality and beautiful lighting of the ceiling, you can transform the interior of the room and give it a special chic.

  • Neon ceiling lighting looks very interesting and original. The light tubes can be installed in both open and closed recesses. If you chose open neon lighting, then the lighting in the room will be evenly and smoothly distributed. If the ceiling is equipped with neon lighting in a closed niche, then you can form a non-trivial flowing glow that will effectively emphasize the contours of the existing structure. With the help of such lighting, you can create a truly exclusive and fashionable image of the room.

  • The plasterboard lighting on the ceiling looks unusual and attractive. This material is pliable. It is easy to process and lends itself to any finish. On the ceiling, you can make a variety of plasterboard shapes: from large volumetric squares or rectangles to angular details and abstract patterns. As a rule, such interesting designs are decorated with flexible lighting systems of different tones.
  • Perhaps the most interesting way to transform an interior is the illuminated glass ceiling. Such constructions consist of a reliable and dense frame and glasses with a special film connected to each other. Lamps or LED strips are installed in the internal niches of such an original ceiling. Glasses in such designs can be both transparent and multi-colored. It all depends only on the taste preferences of the owners.

How to arrange?

Ceiling lamps can be located in the central part of the room, around the perimeter, in different corners, etc. However, before choosing places for installing lighting fixtures, you need to be aware of the requirements for their location.

  • The smallest distance from the edge of the wall to the spotlights on the ceiling should be 20 cm.
  • If you have chosen a pendant chandelier, then it should be hung in the central part of the ceiling. In a studio apartment, a similar lamp can be installed in the center of one of the functional areas.
  • If there is a stretch ceiling in the room, then the distance between the lamps and the seams of the PVC film must be at least 15 cm.
  • If you plan to turn to the symmetrical arrangement of ceiling lights, you should make sure that all fixtures are at the same distance from each other and from the walls.

Currently, there are several basic options for indoor lighting design.

Lighting and interior solutions

The design of the lighting fixtures should match the interior of the room.

  • The popular and modern loft trend is characterized by laconic and uncomplicated forms. Luminaires made in this way do not have additional decorations and decorative elements. Aged lamps are suitable for such an interior. For loft-style ensembles, you should choose ceiling lighting made of plastic, glass or metal.
  • High-tech and minimalist ceiling lamps should have as simple and clear lines as possible. They can be made from inexpensive industrial materials and have a discreet appearance. Also in these modern environments, the luminous ceiling can be used as the main lighting.

  • Today, such an airy style as Provence is at the peak of popularity. In such interiors, ceilings complemented by beams look harmoniously. Such environments can be completed with beautiful and graceful lamps with medium-sized light shades.
  • Lighting a room in Art Nouveau style should have regular shapes and cunning, bold and original configurations. In such interiors, appliances with elegant forged metal or non-standard lampshades will look harmonious.
  • Large chandeliers with wrought iron and glass compositions look organic in classic ensembles. They can be graceful and luxurious in shape. However, such lighting fixtures are not suitable for low ceilings.

How to choose?

The choice of high-quality and suitable ceiling lighting largely depends on the height and type of ceiling. So, in a room with a low ceiling, pendant chandeliers with too long bases will not look. The room, which is characterized by a large area, can be supplemented with massive and large chandeliers, which have more than 3 lamps. In addition, the design of the appliances must match the interior of the room. Choose high quality and reliable lighting from renowned manufacturers. It is recommended that you use models made from sustainable and sustainable materials. Such varieties will serve you for a very long time and will not lose their attractive appearance even after many years.

Before purchasing, be sure to check all fixtures and components of the luminaire. They must be in perfect condition: hold firmly and not creak.

Modern ceiling design ideas

In a studio apartment with white walls and a milky laminate floor, a plasterboard ceiling with a round glossy black film insert in the center will look spectacular. Simple recessed lamps should be placed around the dark insert, and a suspended metal chandelier with round shades should be hung in the center. Such an ensemble will be organically combined with the kitchen and living area.

In attics, sloped ceilings are most often present. They can be supplemented with both recessed and small hanging chandeliers. For example, against the background of a white ceiling and an accent brick wall, a vintage-style ceiling lamp will look harmonious. Complement such a room with a rattan chair, as well as a light table and chairs.

Ceiling lighting will create a special comfort and atmosphere in the room. Unique interior design elements are presented in many variations, which not only add additional volume to the room, but also visually facilitate the plasterboard and stretch ceiling structures.

In the article, we will consider popular types and give advice on how to make a ceiling light with your own hands.

In addition to aesthetic functions, a similar technique:

  • Visually increases the height of the room.
  • Provides soft, diffused light that won't distract from watching TV in the evening or while getting ready for bed.

Before you decide to include lighting in the interior, you need to understand that such a system can take the height from the room by about 10-15 cm. When developing the future design of the room, take these points into account. Use the guidelines below. They will help you make the right choice.

  • The installation of the backlight should be provided at the stage of installing the ceiling frame, so that it is possible to hide the electrical wires, areas for lamps, etc. in advance.
  • Plasterboard, slatted, stretch ceilings can be made in several tiers, and, using complex geometry, give them originality. In this case, your imagination is not limited by anything. Which of the ways to design the ceiling surface to choose is up to you.

  • On multi-level drywall structures, you can combine various types of lighting. For example, a starry sky in the middle and halogen lighting around the edges.
  • For stretch ceilings, due to their originality, it is worth limiting ourselves only to the LED strip around the perimeter of the room. Please note that different textures have completely opposite effects.
  • The main disadvantage of stretch ceilings is that not all bulbs are allowed to be mounted on it, but only of a certain power.
  • To visually increase the space, you can hide the lighting in the recesses in the ceiling and niches.
  • Evening illumination of the ceiling will help to dilute the interior, which is poor in colors.
  • If financial possibilities do not allow you to make an original ceiling, purchase a ceiling plinth and lay LEDs under it.

Ceiling lighting options

The variety of lighting devices offered by manufacturers will help illuminate the room and radically change its appearance. Common ceiling lighting options include:

  • LED strips installed at the edges of the room. For multi-level structures, using this technique, you can emphasize individual tiers or highlight geometric shapes.
  • are represented by randomly or evenly spaced bulbs mounted in the ceiling system.
  • Neon tubes better than others change the appearance of the space. They are distinguished by a long service life.

In addition, depending on the purpose, the backlight is divided into:

  • Target. Used to visually divide the area into zones. For example, or the dining table in the kitchen.
  • General. Provides basic lighting. In this case, spotlights are usually installed.
  • Designer. This option will not give much artificial light, but it will make the room cozy and comfortable. This includes luminous patterns or perimeter lighting.

To choose the appropriate option, decide on the location of the backlight, the brightness you want to get, and of course, take into account the general style of the room.

Ceiling lighting with LED strip

Criterias of choice

When choosing an LED strip, be guided by the following criteria:

  • How closely the diodes are located.
  • What power is consumed by the product.
  • Is moisture protection provided.

LED strips are offered for sale in various colors. By shades, they are divided into:

  • Monochrome - one color.
  • Universal or RGB tapes give several different variations - red, green, blue. RGBW stripes additionally emit white.

For the price, the products are almost the same, so it is better to choose RGBW. For such diodes, the kit is equipped with a special controller, which makes it possible to adjust the shades and the degree of glow intensity.

LED backlights also differ in the density of the arrangement of diode lamps: from 30 to 120 pieces per meter of tape. If you intend to illuminate a large-sized ceiling, purchase products with a frequent arrangement of diodes, for a directional light source it is worth using lower indicators.

The power consumption determines how brightly the diode bulbs will glow. The models SMD 5050 and SMD 3528 are recognized as popular. The first gives 4.8 W / m at a density of 60 diodes per meter of tape, the second at the same density - 14.4 W / m.

Often included in the design of bathroom ceilings. Then it is better to use strips with additional moisture protection. The price for them depends on the degree of security.

LED backlight placement options

LED lighting can be mounted in different places of the suspension system. Here are some of the most common examples:

  • In niches. This arrangement seems to raise the ceiling into the air, creating a floating effect. Typically, niches are purposefully included in ceiling structures for LED lighting. The upward facing LEDs emit soft, diffused light. Side lighting with tape will make the light directional, gliding along the "floating" ceiling surface.

  • Inside the false ceiling... The tapes are mounted in the space between the rough ceiling and the translucent film canvas. This design makes the glow soft and diffused, and the ceiling seems to glow from the inside.

  • Behind the cornice... This method is the easiest and most affordable. In this case, you do not have to install a tension or suspension system. The cornice is attached to the wall, and an LED strip is laid along the edge of the skirting board.

We have already considered lighting the ceiling with our own hands with LED strips in articles, both for drywall and tension structures. Therefore, we will dwell in more detail on the nuances of installation associated with neon lighting and spotlights.

Peculiarities

The classic version of neon lighting is represented by glass tubes filled with an inert gas - neon. A special powder is applied to the inner surface of the "cones" - a phosphor, which emits a glow under tension.

Due to the fact that neon ceiling lighting requires high voltage, you will have to install a special current converter together with it. One device is placed at seven meters. The locations of the converting devices are determined at the stage of installing the ceilings. Typically, niches are made in the concrete floor where the transducers are placed.

Neon lighting has the following features:

  • Such variations are used only as a decorative design, since they give a small brightness with significant electricity consumption. A wide range of shades will be an organic addition to the overall style of the room.
  • A quality product will last from 10 to 15 years.
  • The standard sizes for lamps of this type are 1.5 length and 1.5 cm diameter. The temperature of the heated bulbs does not exceed 40 degrees, and the design works almost silently.
  • The joints of the elements do not form dark spots, so the glow is uniform and continuous.
  • You can decorate the ceiling with a neon cord instead of standard products. Its flexibility greatly simplifies installation, and the device emits the same glow as lamps. The only negative is the expensive price.

Usually, hidden-type neon lighting is most often used for rooms, placing products in hidden niches. Moreover, the narrower the hole for the outlet of artificial lighting, the brighter the luminous strip.

You can select with the help of neon individual decorative elements or interior items. This will complement the overall design of the room, make the room harmonious and beautiful.

How to make neon lights

Having decided on the option you like, you can proceed with the installation.

Before making the neon ceiling light, you will have to replace the wiring that runs from the switch to the device. The first step is to cut the wall for laying a new cable. Subsequently, the gaps can be repaired with a filler flush with the surface.

Therefore, it is necessary to determine the location of the lighting devices, as well as to bring the wires up before installing the ceiling and repairing the room as a whole.

Neon lighting on the ceiling is laid in a special plasterboard box or behind the ceiling plinths. The first method is chosen by carrying out artistic decoration at the stage of repair, before the final decoration of the walls and ceiling with finishing materials.

The backlight is laid in the plinth during the final finishing of the ceiling surface at the final stage of the repair. For a clearer design of neon lighting, it is necessary to attach a small side to the plane of the cornice. To get diffused light, the board on the cornice is not required to be installed.

It is better to choose a larger plinth for such work, because it is very difficult to fix transformers in narrow elements. If you still want to minimize finishing, simply "drown" the transformer in the wall niche.

Usually, neon lamps are included in the kit, which, in addition to the lighting element, includes cords, fasteners, circuits, so there should not be any special difficulties when connecting.

How to arrange devices

In addition to the requirements for, it is necessary to take into account their correct location on the ceiling surface:

  • Uniform used in simple, single-level constructions. In this case, the luminaires are placed along the perimeter of the room on the entire plane of the ceiling.
  • Group designed to illuminate individual areas. For example, when zoning space. Most often, these variations are combined with the main source of artificial light - a chandelier.

On a note! Group lighting is often used to highlight shapes on stretch or plasterboard ceilings.

Before you buy appliances, clearly plan and think over the possible variations in their location. Be guided by the following parameters:

  • The type of light source, its power and technical characteristics.
  • Ceiling surface view.
  • Placement method.

Installation of spot lighting involves the following procedure:

  • Lay the wires and lead them to the places of installation of the devices at the stage of assembling the frame.

Important! The permissible distance between the luminaires and the metal base of the suspended structure must be at least 25-30 cm.

  • Lay the wires in special corrugations to protect them from moisture, and fasten them to the metal profiles with plastic clamps.
  • In the ceiling finish, make the required number of holes corresponding to the size of the luminaires.
  • Mount drywall to the ceiling and install appliances.

For stretch ceilings, fixing of the luminaires is carried out after fixing the canvas, but all preparatory work (supplying electricity, installing platforms, etc.) is carried out at the stage of assembling the frame.

When equipping backlighting in your apartment, remember that it mostly performs a decorative function. Before starting work, familiarize yourself with the possible design options for lighting on the ceiling on the Internet, since illiterately selected methods can make the structure heavier. This is especially true for multi-level suspension systems.

LED ceiling lighting - ready-made kits (video)

Successfully planned ceiling lighting gives the interior completeness, allows you to correct the unsuccessful geometric shapes of the room, creates the atmosphere in the house necessary for rest and work. Lighting options are chosen depending on the design of the ceilings, the style of the room, the preferences of the apartment owners regarding the type of lighting devices used.

Types of lamps for ceiling lighting

The modern lighting market is able to satisfy the most unusual requests and choose a model that best suits any needs. The main types of appliances for include:

  1. Chandeliers.
  2. Spotlights.
  3. Flexible lighting devices (LED and neon strips, duralight cords).

When choosing the type of lighting, you need to take into account the technical parameters of the room: its height and total area. Do not forget about the purpose of the room: a children's room needs bright light that allows the child to learn and play, and it is better to leave lamps with a soft muted glow for the bedroom.

Chandeliers

Chandeliers are the most popular type of lighting in an apartment. They are found in almost any home, they are easy to install and practical. Manufacturers produce models that correspond to various interior styles: from calm classics to futuristic hi-tech. The main types of chandeliers are as follows:

  • Suspension chandeliers consisting of one or more shades suspended on a chain or cord. Suspensions are equipped with shades made of glass, fabric, plastic, which allows them to be used in rooms with different functionality;
  • Ceiling, when fastened to the ceiling using a plank or platform. Ceiling chandeliers are great for rooms with small heights and areas. Among the disadvantages can be noted the need to remove the plafond to replace a burned-out light source.

In addition to the classic models, a large number of original and modern LED ice chandeliers for ceiling mounting have appeared on the market. They are distinguished by a long service life, which does not require frequent replacement of lamps, which greatly facilitates the operation of the lighting fixture.

  • Classic. This is the most common type of chandelier. They represent a multi-lamp structure made of metal with shades of glass, fabric, crystal. Such chandeliers can be very impressive in size. Attachment to the ceiling is carried out by means of a suspended method, for example, on a hook.

Spotlights

They are used both for decorative lighting and as main light sources. They are installed in a single copy to highlight a certain object or in groups in the interior. In one room, a combination of several types of ceiling lighting is possible, for example, installation of spotlights and chandeliers. They complement each other perfectly, allowing you to create different lighting scenarios in the room.

By the method of installation, they are distinguished:

  • Surface mounted spotlights are a combination of a diffuser and a mounting plate. They are attached directly to the ceiling surface. Most often, overhead models are used when it is not possible to make a hole for the inset model.

  • Recessed or recessed luminaires are installed on any surface that has a free cavity. These can be plasterboard ceilings, stretch ceilings, furniture, decking for terraces in country houses, stair treads, etc. This type of lighting fixture is the most common. As a rule, when it comes to a spotlight, it is precisely its mortise version that is meant.

  • Suspended. In this case, the housing with the diffuser is suspended with a decorative cable at a distance from the mounting plate.

In spotlights, lamps of various types can be used:

  • Incandescent lamps. They provide eye-pleasing light and are very inexpensive, but require frequent replacement and consume a lot of electricity. A recessed luminaire with incandescent lamp requires a deeper hole for installation due to its size.
  • Halogen. They are produced in two versions: 220 V and 12 V. In this case, for a luminaire with a low-voltage lamp, it will be necessary to find a place to install a step-down transformer. Such lamps last longer than conventional incandescent lamps and are more energy efficient, but during operation they are subject to strong heating, which does not allow them to be used on certain surfaces.
  • LED lamp. They are rapidly gaining popularity due to their characteristics: long service life, low power consumption, lack of heating during operation. The main disadvantage of LEDs is only their high price. But it has also tended to decline in recent years, due to the expansion of production volumes.

Spotlights are also different in terms of the possibility of adjusting the luminous flux:

  • non-rotatable represent a monolithic body with a clearly directed stream of light;
  • rotary have the ability to adjust the angle of inclination, due to the presence of moving parts.

Track systems

This is a fairly new type of lighting fixture among apartment lighting options. Tracking systems were originally used in salesrooms and office premises, but now they are actively used in residential interiors. The design is a system of lamps located on a busbar - a metal rail 1-3 m long. The rails are connected in the desired combination using connecting elements of various shapes: straight, L-shaped, cruciform, rectangular.

The track is attached directly to the ceiling or descends to the required height on cables. Lighting fixtures of different types can be assembled on one busbar. For example, if you are creating a lighting system in your kitchen, you can install pendant lights above the dining table, spotlights above work surfaces, and ambient light fixtures as general lighting. An annoying device or even the entire combination can be easily replaced with others, without much effort giving the interior a novelty.

Track systems are available for 12 V and 220 V. The latter are easy to install and, if used correctly, are as safe as low voltage ones.

Flexible luminaires

LED strips, duralight cords, flexible neon tubes are used for decorative ceiling lighting. They can be installed between the levels of the plasterboard ceiling, located behind special skirting boards. The most attractive feature of flexible backlighting is LED strip. It is easy to install on your own, it is reliable, durable and low energy consumption. With proper installation, it will last for many years without requiring maintenance.

When planning the lighting of the ceiling, it should be remembered that it serves only a decorative role. Therefore, it is necessary to think over what kind of lighting in the rooms of the apartment will be the main one.

The choice of luminaires depending on the type of ceiling

When deciding which lighting is best to use for the ceiling in a particular room, you need to consider the type of ceiling structure.

  1. A suspended plasterboard ceiling most often involves the installation of spotlights around the perimeter or a predetermined contour, as well as lighting with LED strips. In addition, it is possible to use different models of chandeliers. Lightweight versions are hung on a hook, while heavy chandeliers are best installed using anchors.
  2. The best option for concrete or wood ceilings is a variety of chandeliers. In this case, you can safely use the heaviest models, since the hook for fastening will securely hold in wood and concrete. Installing embedded point models, however, can be very difficult, so they are best avoided.
  3. The choice of a lighting fixture for a stretch ceiling is due to the risk of deformation of the canvas under the influence of heat or weight. Fixing the fixtures to the film itself is impossible, in this case it will simply break. Before installing the stretch ceiling, it is necessary to prepare special seats for point devices or install a hook for attaching the chandelier. It is better to choose LED lamps as a light source, since, unlike incandescent and halogen lamps, they do not cause heating of the stretch fabric, which reduces the risk of its deformation to zero.

If the stretch ceiling is made of glossy PVC, the number of luminaires will visually double due to reflection. And when installing a multi-level structure with ice backlighting, the gloss will "show" all the flaws in the installation of the LED strip.
