How to repair a zipper on a jacket at the base. Learning to save: how to fix a zipper. List of possible zipper failures. How to quickly fix a zipper, metal, plastic, hidden, if it comes apart, if the slider has fallen off? How to unzip

Lightning has become an integral part of many things from our wardrobe. Thin and thick, long and short, with metal and plastic teeth. We use zippers on clothes of all seasons.

The zipper is a popular fastener, especially the detachable one: it’s convenient, but alas, sometimes it breaks.

If a button comes off, you can simply sew it back in place and continue wearing the item. How to fix a zipper? Of course, you can take the spoiled item to the studio. If you want to save money, you can try to fix the zipper at home with your own hands.

And today we will talk about repairing a detachable zipper. And about a fairly common case , when the plug-in tip of the left part of the fastener has become worn out.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to repair a zipper with your own hands, and replacing the slider or, as they also say, “dogs” will not help, and it is usually recommended to change the zipper completely.

What to do if you don’t want to change the lock, yes, sometimes it’s not so easy (it can be sewn very awkwardly), but you want to wear a jacket with a zipper. I found a very interesting method on the Internet.

So, you don’t want to sew up the lock at the base and you don’t want (or are able) to replace it. Well, then let’s fix it:

First, we need a piece of iron from which we will make the part we need.

We also need superglue and a paper clip. (superglue is one that hardens very quickly and becomes “like glass”, very hard, based on cyacrolate, sold in small tubes of 1-2 grams).

So, we remove all excess, after soaking the fabric with superglue. It will set quickly and add rigidity.
Carefully cut with pliers. (photo 1).

Now comes the main part.
We cut it to size from a piece of stainless steel or tinned tin (you can take it from tin can from condensed milk)
and fold as shown in photo 2.

It should fit well into the part of the lock that moves and be well fixed in the part that is located below (photo 3).

Surely, everyone did this when they were trying to understand how this thing works or when lightning moved in the middle.

After this we apply with inside lock our piece of iron and place it on superglue (photos 5 and 6).
We try to unfasten it. If you did everything well, then the lock should unfasten, although at first, until the piece of hardware gets used to it, this can be done with some effort. Take your time, because... the glue may not have time to set completely.
So, you unfastened the lock. Everything works, but it's not enough.

Now we need to strengthen our structure.
We drill 2 small holes and insert a bracket made from a regular paper clip (photo 7, 8,).

That's it now! (photo 9, 10).

We finally check the operation of our lightning. For best view You can touch up the sizing areas with a permanent marker. For good performance, I recommend rubbing the lock with paraffin or stearin (a regular candle) or just soap.

Some useful tips related to zippers

* If the zipper lock is a little tight, rub it with a stearin candle. This advice is especially effective for metal zippers.
A soft pencil lead will also help. It is enough to pass it along the zipper several times.

* If the zipper often spontaneously diverges in the middle, lightly tap the lock (its edges, and not the bracket to which the tongue is attached) with a small hammer.
Tapping the zipper itself, if it is metal, will also help. The lock will become tighter, but the zipper will stop coming apart.

* If the zipper tab comes off, it can be replaced with a regular paper clip.

* Zippers on shoes suffer greatly from dampness, wet and salty snow, and slush. Which dramatically reduces their service life.
Rub a piece of unsalted lard over them or use a special hydrophobic lubricant more often. And the lightning will be protected from dampness. Such lubrication will also improve its performance.

Often you have to deal with an unpleasant situation when your favorite item cannot be worn due to problems with the zipper. The zipper on a jacket or sweatshirts especially often comes apart, since the fastener tape in such clothing is quite mobile and can easily be damaged.

Why does the zipper on my jacket come apart?

The zipper on the jacket comes apart: the main problems with the fastener

There are several common types of damage to a zipper:

· the lock is coming apart - the reason is that the runner is too loose, it does not bring the teeth together;

· the slider moves too tightly - on the contrary, the planes of the slider are very compressed, friction does not allow it to slide;

· the pawl flew off the fastener - the fastenings became so loose that the working part of the mechanism slipped past the stops;

· the lock unfastens spontaneously: again the slider is weakened, and strong pressure on the connections also plays a role.

Figuring out how to fix a zipper on a jacket or jeans is simple: if unfastening is difficult, you need to lubricate the teeth; for other problems, tighten the slider or replace it. However, replacement solves the problem of poor unfastening.

You can compress the planes of the pawl using pliers, but this must be done carefully, since too much compression will lead to a problem of the second kind - with unfastening. In addition, the relatively fragile metal of cheap accessories can simply break. It is most convenient to use a soft graphite pencil to lubricate the teeth. It is enough to run it several times along the teeth on the outer and inner sides of the tape and fasten and unzip the zipper.

If the button unfastens spontaneously - this usually happens with tight jeans - we can use a stopper. It is enough to thread a ring (from a keychain made of ordinary wire or a straightened paper clip) into the hole on the tongue and put it on when fastening it to the button of the jeans along with the loop.

If the repair fails

The easiest way to replace a fastening mechanism that has come off a zipper is in a workshop; they can easily pick it up there right size and professionally fix it. However, if you wish, you can do this yourself. The simplest option is to remove the stoppers at the top of the fastener and, carefully bringing the ends together on a flat surface, put the slider on them. In this case, it will need to be tightened a little after putting it on and the stops restored. The easiest way is to sew it tightly with thick thread. top part lightning. If the fastener is sewn into the product, this option is not suitable. How to fix a zipper, whether it is even possible, or whether it is better to replace the fastener, in this case will be decided by a clothing repair specialist.

How to fix a zipper if it comes apart?

Lightning is a small and incredibly useful element that all people have long become accustomed to. Few people attach importance to it. And few people think about the fact that we use it almost every day. It is present on jackets, on coats and sheepskin coats, on sweaters, on jeans, on pants, on trousers and shorts, on skirts and dresses, on shoes, on boots and other shoes, on a backpack, on a briefcase, on a bag, on a wallet , on a pencil case and various accessories. In many cases, a zipper is more convenient than snaps and buttons. It can be made in black, brown, red and any other color. The snake can be iron or plastic and have different lengths and shapes.

Sometimes it happens that these miniature assistants break down. Often this happens at the most inopportune moment. The most common problems encountered are:

  • the zipper is not fastened;
  • separated;
  • came off from the base;
  • does not hold on the end;
  • goes away;
  • the teeth fell out.

What to do when there is no time to replace the zipper or take the item to the studio for repairs? In this article you will learn how to fix a zipper yourself at home.

Even if the zipper is not broken, but just sometimes comes apart, it is better to fix it right away before it completely stops fastening.

How to fix a zipper on a jacket?

There are several effective and effective ways that will help you quickly fix a broken zipper on outerwear:

  1. Take clear nail polish and apply it on the frayed part of the jacket. Do this until the varnish completely saturates the material and the fastening of the snake becomes more rigid. This method is quite fast and simple. But he doesn't fix the lightning for long.
  2. The same procedure can be done using quick-hardening glue. In this case, you need to be very careful and careful, because the glue hardens very quickly. It must be applied to the damaged area of the zipper in very small portions. This will allow the zipper to remain in working condition for as long as possible. This method considered more effective than the varnish method.

If the zipper is not broken, but simply comes apart, do not rush to change it. Can it be repaired? Of course you can. And even necessary. To do this you need to use pliers. Lightly press the bottom and top of the zipper slider. This will help the lightning stop spreading.

This operation can be performed only once. If the zipper opens again, the slider will have to be replaced.

What to do if the tractor zipper breaks? You can also replace the pawl at home. Use pliers or wire cutters to remove the plastic fastener. Remove the dog and pick up a new one in the store (it’s better to take the old slider with you so that the new one fits exactly).

The bartack can be taken from an old jacket. Or from a short zipper bought at a craft store. It must be removed very carefully - carefully unbending the petals. A small screwdriver or awl will help you with this. A metal fastener must be used. Pinch it with pliers on the tractor zipper. Move it as far as possible from the edge of the lena so that the dog does not slip through.

How to fix a zipper dog?

Sometimes something unpleasant happens - we put on our favorite thing and find that the lock is broken. What to do? Change clothes and postpone repairs? Or quickly carry the item to the studio? As you know, replacing a zipper is not cheap. In addition, the repair shop will take several days to complete. And you don’t always have extra time. And I don’t want to spend it on a studio.

If the slider falls off, don't panic. This problem is very easy to solve. You can also replace the dog at home. This is possible if the teeth have not pulled out. Otherwise, the zipper will still need to be replaced.

You will need:

  • slider (zipper dog);
  • pliers;
  • upper and lower limiters;
  • ruler.

The first thing you need to do is buy a new dog. If the old one that came off is not damaged, you can put it back on, but it is better to replace it.

When purchasing, make sure the new slider is the same shape and size as the old one, and that it fits the type of zipper that broke. If you don't want to bother, buy a ready-made zipper and use the pawl from there. Such option will do and in the event that it is necessary to replace the stoppers in the lock. Otherwise you will have to purchase these elements separately. Short snakes are quite cheap, the purchase will not hurt your pocket.

After purchasing the dog, the zipper at the bottom must be exposed. To do this, you need to remove a few cloves using nippers. Remove them gradually - one thing at a time. Continue doing this until you have exposed two centimeters of woven tape on both halves of the snake.

Ideally, you want to remove as few teeth as possible. If the dog is small, it is recommended to expose 3-4 centimeters. Before you begin removing the cloves, pay attention to the condition of the snake. If it is open, it needs to be exposed not only at the bottom, but also at the top.

Make sure you expose both sides of the snake equally. If this is not the case, you will not be able to return the dog.

Place the dog on the zipper. Its direction may be different. It depends on whether the lock was open or closed when the slider jumped out of it.

If the zipper was unzipped, put the slider on with a split hole so that the hole on the back side faces away from the zipper. If the zipper is closed, put the tab on with the joint opening. The split side on the opposite side should face away from the zipper.

Pull the fabric halves of the snake above the slider. With minimal use of force, the pawl will move from the fabric to the lock teeth. Pull the halves until you hear a characteristic click-like sound. It will signal that the slider is in place.

After the pawl is finally installed, check if the updated zipper works. Try moving the slider down and up a few times to check its operation. Once the pawl is in place, it will zip up and unzip with ease. If it moves slowly or does not move at all, you need to reinstall it.

You need to check the functionality carefully so as not to accidentally remove the pawl. After all, we have not yet installed the lower and upper stoppers. Before installing them, think about which ones are more suitable for you - lower or upper.

After removing the part, it is necessary to limit the exposed area of the zipper with stoppers so that the slider does not fly off again. Most often, the upper stoppers are small in size. They are separately attached to each of the halves of the lock. They do not interfere with fastening and unfastening the zipper at the upper end. The lower fastener is larger. It has a square shape and is attached immediately to two halves of a one-piece zipper over the gap to prevent the pawl from flying off. It fixes the tip of the lock in the closed position. It covers the exposed area from which the teeth have been removed.

You will need pliers to install the top stops. Place one of the stops over the topmost tooth on one of the lock halves. To do this, open the clasp a little. Secure the stopper by clamping it with pliers. Make sure it is securely fastened. Repeat the procedure with the second stopper.

If you want to install a bottom stop, close the zipper. Insert the mounting pins into the fabric of both halves of the lock. The stopper should be located above the lowest teeth (of those remaining after replacing the pawl). After installation, turn the item inside out. Using pliers, clamp the mounting pins until they are flat. They must be pressed tightly against the snake, otherwise they will scratch the body or cling to clothing. Lightning is ready!

How to fix a metal zipper?

The methods described above are suitable for repairing both plastic and iron zippers. In any case, your most faithful assistant will be pliers. They will help out if the zipper comes apart, unfastens on its own, or, conversely, does not fasten. If the clamp does not help, most likely the lock already needs to be changed. But this can also be done at home. The main thing is desire and a little cunning!

Zippers are a convenient invention that allows you to tightly close your bag in a second and fasten your raincoat against the chilly wind and cold.

But, like any invention, they have their drawbacks. The main drawback of all locks: they quickly become unusable.

If the lock on your favorite jacket suddenly comes apart, or the slider comes off, this does not mean at all that you will have to take the item to the studio and wait a long time for the old lock to be removed and a new one to be sewn in.

Exist simple ways fix the lock with your own hands at home. And for each type of breakdown they are different.

Ways to fix a zipper at the base

The reason for the zipper breaking at the very base is the separation of fabric lint. The material that holds the lock is fraying.

To restore its integrity and continue to use the lock, it is enough to use a cunning technique.

Repairing the zipper at the base:

  • Gather the fabric at the base.
  • Soak with nail polish.
  • Let it dry in the correct position.
  • Re-treat with nail polish.

Important! If the lock is in a visible place, the varnish should be matched to the color of the lock's fabric.

A red smeared spot on a black handbag will look extremely awkward and catchy, even considering that the base of the zipper is not in plain sight.

Glue is often used instead of nail polish. This is a great alternative because the adhesive is more durable and the material becomes harder, making the fastener easier to use.

Shoe glue, or “Moment,” is suitable for these purposes. Glue is not suitable for joining paper.

How to repair a slider?

A common problem with any fastener: breakage of the slider. The reasons for this type of failure vary.

Possible reasons for the slider failure:

  1. Poor quality alloy.
  2. Use of low quality material in production.
  3. Inappropriate material for the slider compared to the zipper teeth.
  4. Careless handling when fastening and unfastening the product.

Whatever the cause of the breakdown, you should try to solve the problem yourself. Often, the cause is the divergence of the edges of the slider.

They stretch, the process of movement worsens, the slider flies off when fastened.

How to fix a slider - step by step instructions:

Important! You cannot squeeze the slider in the middle, this will lead to its final breakage. Only clamp at the edges.

Do not overdo it so as not to damage the part. If you close the edges all the way, you will not be able to use the lock.

What to do if there are not enough teeth?

The lack of teeth is one of the reasons for the inconvenience when fastening. Over time, they fall out, leaving behind gaps that impede the passage of the slider.

We close the gaps on the plastic zipper:

  • We buy thick fishing line.
  • We drag it to the place where the tooth fell out.
  • We wind it several times so that the size matches the rest of the teeth.
  • We secure it with a lighter, after making a small knot.

This method will help make fastening easier, postponing a visit to the studio.

A metal zipper can only be repaired using similar teeth. They can be found on an old zipper that is no longer used.

It is important that the size of the teeth correspond to those available, otherwise the procedure will not be beneficial.

Insert the teeth into the metal zipper:

  • Separate required amount teeth of a suitable size from an old zipper.
  • We put them in place of the spaces and clamp them with pliers.
  • Check the strength and re-tighten if necessary.

Important! It happens that the teeth do not fall out completely, but begin to interfere with the normal passage of the slider.

The lock is opened and placed on hard surface, and then lightly tap the teeth with a hammer.

This should bring them back to their original position. This method only works on metal zippers!

Rules for caring for a castle?

By following the rules of zipper care, you will keep it in its original form for a long time.

Such as:

  1. Do not let small children play with lightning.
  2. Do not make sudden movements; close and open slowly and carefully.
  3. If the zipper is metal and is located on shoes, it should be lubricated to normalize its functioning. Suitable only for leather shoes and bags on which the lubricant will not leave marks.
  4. Do not expose the metal fastener to water as it will begin to rust.
  5. Clean dirt from the zipper in a timely manner.
  6. If it is jammed and does not want to unfasten, do not tear the lock. Check to see if the internal tissue is stuck in the slider or if a tooth has broken off.

    Take a little time so that you do not have to repair the product in a workshop by carrying out complete replacement fasteners

  7. If you choose shoes and they have difficulty fitting at the top, be prepared for the clasp to come loose soon. Tight clothes and shoes - possible reason breakdowns.
  8. If the zipper is stuck, start moving it reverse side. The action is necessary to pull out the interfering fabric of the bottom lining.

Don't be upset if our advice didn't help you. Now you have practical knowledge of how to fix a lock.

If you fail, don’t blame yourself; there are cases when it’s simply impossible to save an old clasp. Then you should carefully remove the lock and sew in a new one. The action is carried out using a blade and a sewing machine.

Important! If you haven't replaced the lock yourself before, you shouldn't learn from your expensive and favorite things. It is better to take the item to a studio where professionals will quickly handle the task.
