Roof ridge: types, features, do-it-yourself assembly and installation. Roof ridge: types, purpose and installation Docking ridges at the top point of the roof

Over the years of using metal tile roofs, it has established itself as a durable, reliable and affordable roofing material. It is more often used for gable roofs, since sheets of thin and light metal with extruded relief are perfect for DIY installation. The only weak point of such a roof is the corner between the slopes, which is unprotected from moisture and is blown through. To quickly and aesthetically eliminate this defect, you need to install a stacked metal ridge.

Reasons for installation

I call the junction between two roof slopes a ridge joint. No matter how ideally the installation of the roofing material is carried out, small cracks and gaps remain between the sheets. Not only does it look unaesthetic, but an unsealed ridge causes the following problems in the operation of a metal roof:

  • Penetration of moisture into the cracks between sheets of metal tiles. Water seeps into any, even minor, gaps, penetrating under the roofing material and destroying wooden elements rafter system.
  • Blowing cold air under the roof. An unsealed ridge is an abyss into which the heated air from a heated house goes; this is a gap not only in the roof, but also in the budget, because in order to maintain the optimal temperature, more fuel and energy resources will be required.
  • Ventilation problems. Installation of a type-setting ridge on a metal tile will help to establish effective ventilation attic or attic space. The air there will be fresh, without drafts.
  • Noise. The air, entering under the sheets of metal tiles through the ridge, circulates and is divided into streams, due to which the roofing material is deformed and makes popping sounds.

Installation of a ridge makes the appearance of a metal tile roof harmonious and complete, preserving the healthy condition of the wood of the rafter system, increasing its service life.

Assortment of inlaid skates

If previously you had to think about how to equip external corner between the roof slopes, now it’s enough to go to a hardware store and pick up a ready-made ridge in the color of the metal tile of the shape you like. Manufacturers offer the following options:

  1. Semicircular models. Metal that is pressed into a semicircular shape. It is necessary to attach plugs to the end sides of a type-formed ridge of this shape to close the voids into which snow, water or wind can get. The most expensive of the entire range of skates.
  2. Straight models. Made in the shape of a rectangle, it is used for hips, gables, and to decorate the ridge. Fastening a rectangular profile will cost less than a semicircular one, but such a connection will look simple.
  3. Triangular models. They completely repeat the geometry of the angle between the slopes, so their installation does not involve the use of plugs. Most cheap way finish roofing work on a metal roof.
  4. Decorative models. They differ from other types of skate in their purpose. Fastening decorative elements with narrow shelves does not solve problems with waterproofing the gap between the joints, but simply gives a neat look.

When choosing a metal ridge connection, you need to pay attention to the width of the shelves and the presence of edging. Models without a wrap are not rigid enough to remain level when secured with self-tapping screws. And narrow shelves, the width of which is less than 150-200 mm, are not able to effectively protect against the penetration of water and snow.

Selecting a seal

Professional roofers advise inspecting the condition of the ridge groove before starting work. If the installation of metal tiles was carried out correctly, then there should be no gaps thicker than 20 mm. Otherwise, a sealant must be used. The following types are suitable for this:

Even if the joint between the slopes seems smooth, insulating it with a sealant before you start attaching the ridge will never be superfluous, because the life of the roof and its safety depend on the tightness of the connections. interior decoration attics.

Installation sequence

In order for the skate to perform the functions assigned to it, you must follow the recommended installation technology. It’s difficult to do high-altitude work alone, so it’s better to have a couple of assistants. Installation must be performed in the correct order:

When working with metal tiles, you need to screw in self-tapping screws at the crest of its wave, use a rubber seal to isolate the holes from moisture or special self-tapping screws, the rubber head of which performs the same protective functions. When performing installation, do not screw the screws too often or infrequently, find golden mean so that the metal tiles do not “disturb” from an excess of fasteners and do not “slam” in windy weather when there is a shortage.

Installing metal additional elements on the ridge will protect the roof from moisture and save heat, however, during installation, do not forget about safety precautions when working at height.

Work for a "real" skate

A ridge is considered to be a horizontal edge of a pitched roof located at its apex. To ordinary people, it appears to be a metal strip or a kind of edging assembled from tiles or shaped roofing parts. Actually it's a complex system, whose responsibilities include the following functions:

Protection of the timber components of the rafter system from attacks by atmospheric water and from tearing off the covering by gusty winds.
- Preventing the penetration of dust, insects, fallen leaves and other contaminants into the under-roof space.
- Ensuring free circulation of air flows through the vents arranged in the roofing pie slopes.

In gable, broken, hip and half-hip structures, the ridge repeats the shape of the purlin of the same name and is equal to its length. However, installing a ridge completes the construction of more than just roofs with layered rafters. The latter, according to design conditions, are required to rest astride the purlin, i.e. on a ridge beam or board.

Skates, with different rights, are also installed on roofs that do not have a purlin as the main support of the rafter system. They are built on top of the roof of hanging category structures, built on site or assembled from ready-made roof trusses.

Hip corners are also arranged according to the principle of installing skates. Essentially the ribs convex corners roofs can also safely be classified as ridge roofs, only they are located not horizontally but at an angle.

In addition, starting and regular shaped parts for hip ribs and skates are produced in equivalent configurations and sizes. Special hip elements are produced only for the point where the ribs meet.

Work on the arrangement of hips and skates is carried out by analogy. The only significant difference is that on roofs with the indicated convex ribs, the finishing parts are first mounted on the hip projections, and then the ridge is built. Its edges should overlap the “edging” of the inclined corner so that water flowing down the slopes does not leak into the attic space.

Types of ridge elements

In the construction of ridges on pitched roofs, both factory-made and home-made products are used. Methods and materials for arrangement are determined by the type of roofing:

When using bitumen shingles the ridge is made from flexible ridge elements supplied with the roof or cut independently from ordinary shingles.
- When using roofing steel, corrugated sheets, metal tiles, the ridge is covered with a metal strip, which is purchased in finished form or made from sheet steel with your own hands.
- When using clay, porcelain stoneware, sand-cement and polymer tiles, natural slate, asbestos-cement fiber sheets and tiles, the ridge is constructed by individually laying ridge parts manufactured by the coating manufacturer.

Ridge parts for arranging tiled and slate roofs can be done with your own hands by pouring a cement-sand mixture into a pre-made mold of a specific size. However, this hard work will not satisfy the economic feasibility, and there will certainly be many complaints about the quality of the products.

The color of the independent work definitely does not match the color of the roof. Because without information about the exact recipe for preparing the mixture, it is almost impossible to select the proportions of components and coloring pigments.

It will also not be possible to compact the mixture in a mold perfectly without industrial vibrating equipment. This means that the required density of the product is out of the question. Low density is an excess of pores, which reduces water repellent properties and frost resistance.

But the production of planks for the construction of a roof ridge covered with profiled metal is quite accessible to diligent craftsmen. The whole point is to cut sheet steel according to the required dimensions and form the parts using a bending machine.

Corrugated sheet metal will help optimize the results of cutting and bending source material. The presence of corrugations will determine the design of the future skate; however, it can increase consumption if the folds do not perfectly correspond to the dimensions of the part being manufactured.

It should be remembered that when cutting you need to leave 1 cm of margin along both sides. They need to be folded inwards to create a protective edge. The shape of the ridge strip in cross-section can repeat one of the figured industrial options or resemble a regular one metal corner.

Homemade or factory-made metal ridge strips can be used when arranging roofs with soft coverings, if such an emergency solution does not simplify or worsen the appearance of the building. In asphalt shingle roofing systems, strips are often used as ridge reinforcement parts and then installed over flexible shingles.

Methods and various technologies installations

Methods for arranging roof ridges with soft and hard coverings include: general rules, independent of the type of roofing. Compliance with generally accepted requirements is a prerequisite for the normal operation of the structure.

Requirements to be observed when installing a skate:

Along the ridge line of insulated roofs, the hydro- and vapor barrier layers must have a gap. It is needed for the free exit of condensate and evaporation from the under-roof space.
- The sheathing installed on the rafters must provide at the top a gap between the planes of the slopes of at least 5 cm.
- The sparse lathing along the ridge line is strengthened by replacing the block with a board or by reducing the installation step of the laths.
- The ridge area is equipped with additional waterproofing, laid along the ridge edge in a strip of at least 25 cm.
- It is not necessary to break the waterproofing and the gap between the slopes of a cold roof if ventilation problems are solved with a ridge aerator or dormer windows.

However, there are nuances in the technologies that depend on the type of finishing material laid on the roof. A detailed familiarization with them will help you understand how best and smarter to install a ridge on your own roof.

Roof installation with flexible tiles

The scope of application of bitumen shingles covers a wide range of roofing structures. Its flexible shingles are laid on roofs with a cold attic and on attic structures. The presence or absence of insulation determines the design of the ridge.

Work on arranging the ridge area of an unheated roof is carried out according to the following algorithm:

Laying of ordinary bitumen shingles is carried out up to the ridge line. The parts of the shingles protruding beyond the ridge are bent over the ridge rib and attached to the adjacent slope.
- Cutting out the ridge elements is carried out by dividing the ridge-eaves shingles into three parts according to the existing perforation or by cutting ordinary bitumen sheets used in laying the roofing.
- The cut ridge elements are laid so that they protrude 5 cm beyond both lines of the ridge. Gluing is carried out in the usual way for bitumen shingles. The installed ridge shingles are secured with two or four nails at the corners, depending on the brand and shape of the shingles.
- The next part is placed on the fixed element so that its edge covers the nearby two nails. The overlap should be approximately 5 cm. Fastening is done using a similar method.
- The steps are repeated until the ridge is completely covered with bitumen shingles.

Flexible ridge parts are laid in the direction opposite to the vector of the prevailing winds in the region. This is necessary so that the edges of the bitumen “petals” are not lifted or peeled off by gusty winds.

The above method is suitable for unused attics if the gables are equipped with dormer windows and it is planned to install pitched aerators on the roof. If there are doubts about the sufficiency of measures for arranging ventilation for a cold roof, it is better to go a different route. Great solution V similar situations will become a ridge valve.

The construction of a ventilated ridge on bitumen shingles is carried out using a different method. After all, the task of the ventilated option is to form a gap between the top of the roof and the ridge part to ensure ventilation.

The gap is created by installing spacer elements from a 50*50 mm block, from which either simply cut pieces or make devices in the form of a hut. The distance devices are attached to the sheathing, and then a ridge strip made of OSB strips connected at an angle is fixed.

The edges of the system of spacer bars are covered with aluminum mesh, preventing the penetration of insects. The edges of the OSB ridge strip are bordered by the aprons of the ridge aerator.

Flexible tiles are rarely laid on roofs with low slopes. The optimal angle for using it as a roofing covering is 12 degrees or more. If it is decided to cover a flat structure with bitumen shingles, then the ridge area must be further strengthened.

An example of arranging a low-slope roof due to a hillock:

Before fixing the top row of bitumen tiles, an additional waterproofing carpet made of rolled material is laid.
- The area of the extended ridge is marked with coated lace, because regular ridge tiles do not cover its extended version.
- The edges of the waterproofing carpet are treated with roofing cement or silicone sealant.
- A strip of zinc is installed on top of the poured edges of additional waterproofing, fixed with nails in a checkerboard pattern in two rows with a pitch of about 20 cm.
- Uncut ordinary shingles, according to the markings, are laid so that their figured edge half covers the metal strip. The upper edge of the shingles protruding beyond the roof bends over the ridge rib.
- The ridge tile elements are cut along pre-drawn lines.
- The tile is laid on the previous element so that the working trapezoidal component is completely covered. Ridge shingles are fastened with two nails.
- Only the front part of the finishing ridge tile should be left; the tapezoid part should be cut off. It is fixed with bitumen mastic and four nails.
- It is advisable to coat the nail heads with silicone to protect them from atmospheric attacks.

By following technological instructions and methods tested in practice, you can easily create an excellent horse with your own hands. soft roof from the currently extremely popular bitumen shingles.

Skate on metal surface

Specifics of roofs with metal coating dictates the use of special methods for installing the ridge. Due to the shaped corrugations of the corrugated sheets and metal tiles, a tight fit of the ridge strip to the roof becomes impossible. The assembled seam roof also does not allow you to relax due to the longitudinal standing seams. What should I do?

The solution is simple and ingenious. The depressions between the roof and the ridge strip are simply filled with a sealant if the height of the waves is small, or with pieces of timber with a waterproofing sealing winding if the roof has a high relief.

Waterproofing device in metal roofs ah - this is a must, because... They are collected from large, but still separate sheets. The roof has seams, overlaps and joints that create a potential leakage hazard. The waterproofing layer is required to protect the attic from possible water infiltration.

Direct contact of waterproofing and metal roofing extremely undesirable due to the threat of condensation. Destructive moisture is formed due to the difference in temperatures outside the roof and inside the attic. In order to create a gap between the waterproofing and roofing materials, a sheathing of timber with an edge of at least 50 mm is constructed.

The lathing forms ventilation ducts along the slopes with unloading in the ridge area. Therefore, in the family of metal roofs, only ventilation ridge systems are installed; it is wrong to implement other options, moreover, if it is simply unrealistic to act according to the instructions.

As usual, in ventilated ridge systems there should be a gap of approximately 50 mm between the sheathing of the slopes. Waterproofing and vapor barrier, if the latter was used, must have a gap in the ridge area of at least 20 mm. On top, the waterproofing panels of both slopes are additionally reinforced with strips of water-repellent material at least 25 cm wide.

Metal tiles and corrugated sheets are produced by the same manufacturers. Structurally, the sheets of materials differ from each other only in the transverse wave, which gives the metal tiles a resemblance to the natural ceramic prototype. It is advisable to fasten a block under the high figured plank along the ridge rib to ensure its rigidity.

Shaped parts for metal roofing from the same manufacturer are available in equal sizes and are suitable for installing both types of roofing. If desired, you can use a figured or simple strip when arranging both metal tiles and corrugated sheets.

However, over roofs with high relief and expressive metal tile coverings, a curly, rounded or trapezoidal ridge looks better. Above the roof of a garage or shed with gentle slopes, a regular metal strip would be more appropriate.

Algorithm for installing a roof ridge element covered with profiled steel:

Along the ridge rib, markings are made according to the dimensions of the ridge element.
- A ventilated seal is laid along the marked lines if the roof is covered with material with a large relief, or a ridge seal if the roof has low corrugations.
- The initial ridge strip is installed on the leeward side of the roof and fixed with two screws at the starting points. The side edges of the part must overlap the sealing strips.
- The second plank is overlapped with the previous part. Ridge elements for corrugated sheeting are laid with an overlap of at least 10 cm, for metal tiles with one stiffener overlapping another.
- The second strip is fastened with two self-tapping screws in the overlap area through both strips. Attached to a high wave coating.
- After attaching the two planks, they are fixed with self-tapping screws in the middle.

Similar work is performed until the ridge rib is completely covered with the plank. Finally, the ends of the ridge are covered with matching metal plugs.

If installing caps was not planned, the ends of the ridge strip can be closed by cutting and bending its edges 90 degrees. You can bend it on a bending machine or make an interesting bending device from two strips of metal with a handle.

Skates for piece coverings

Roof ridges covered piece materials, may be blind or have ventilation ducts. Ridge elements are installed individually in the direction opposite to the prevailing winds. Bars or boards of sparse sheathing 25 cm from the top line are laid with a reduced pitch, the solid version is not changed.

Strips of additional waterproofing are laid along the ridge in any case. It is recommended to fill the depressions between the ridge elements and the waves of the coating cement mortar M50 to a depth of at least 15 cm.

The ridge parts of slate roofs are fastened to fix this particular covering with nails. Arrangement of the ridge ceramic roofing performed using metal holders. The work is carried out in accordance with the following stages:

Fitting for fitting tile holders. To perform this, two covering elements are placed on the ridge, the second is needed to press the first. The distance between the lower plane of the element on its narrow side and the upper edge of the sheathing is measured.
- The result obtained is reduced by 5 mm. According to the last number, the “legs” of the 2 fasteners-holders for the ridge beam are bent.
- The fasteners are installed on the sheathing. To do this, the laths are lifted with a nail puller. First, two holders are installed at the ends of the roof, between which the cord is pulled. Rows are mounted along the cord, located above each rafter joint.
- placed on holders ridge beam with a cross section of at least 50850 mm. It is fixed to each fastening element.
- The ridge beam is covered with an aero element. Fixed with galvanized nails after approximately 30 cm.
- Installation of ridge tiles starts from the leeward side. To secure the first element, the clamp is fixed flush with the side tiles installed on the gable. It is nailed with two nails to the ridge beam.
- The first tile is snapped into the starting clip and secured to the ridge with a second clip into which the next one will snap into. And this should be done until the ridge is completely covered.

The mounting hole for fastening the ridge tiles is oval, so the arrangement of the ridge can be done without trimming the elements. Upon completion of the work, the ends of the ridge are closed with perforated or solid plugs.

Project Masters "Doc's House" professionally build a rafter system

Horse- This is a horizontal rib located at the highest point of the roof, which is formed by the junction of the roof slopes. The ridge also includes those attached to the rib different elements. Through this point, ventilation occurs for both the roof itself and the space under the roof. Installing a ridge also means creating a ridge girder: it connects the slopes of the rafter system.

The very essence of the skate indicates that it is an element in the first place gable roofs, however, is also present in designs more complex configuration- for example, broken hipped slopes. There are also roofs irregular shape with different slopes with a displaced ridge. The construction of these varieties is a more complex process than in the case of the standard form.

When installing the ridge, special attention should be paid to two points: make accurate calculations of the height of this part and arrange good ventilation roofing pie and attic spaces.

Previously, asbestos cement was used to decorate the ridge. Currently, galvanized iron is becoming increasingly popular. The construction market offers many options for ready-made galvanized corners, cut into parts approximately two meters in length. Similar corners can be made from sheets yourself.

Types of skates

The ridge can be made in different options. In some cases, it is laid on vertical racks a beam that serves as a support for the rafter legs. The vertical posts themselves rest on the ceiling beams or on tie rods.

The second option for the ridge is the connection through longitudinal connections of the exposed triangles of the rafter system. In this case, boards are sewn onto the rafters on both sides at a certain angle to one another, resulting in the formation of a ridge.

The roofing ridge is made on the basis of the materials used as the roofing: metal profiles, slate, ceramic or bitumen tiles, etc. Today you can purchase the following types of skates in stores:

  • ridge strip;
  • semicircular ridge;
  • mortise;
  • crossed skates.

Another name for a ridge strip is a ridge profile. Its function is to connect the junction areas of two opposite slopes on the ridge. The ridge also performs a decorative function. On sale you can find ridge elements that are identical in color to the roofing covering, which allows it to organically fit into the overall design of the roof. During installation, a special sealant must be placed under the ridge strip.

Semicircular ridge performs the same functions as the ridge strip, while looking more aesthetically pleasing. As a rule, manufacturing companies produce skates that differ in color and texture. It is better to purchase roofing elements from one manufacturer: in this case, you can achieve a high-quality ridge structure and its high functionality.

Mortise skates used for device hip roofs. Based on the name itself, you can understand that this part cuts into the roof slope. At the same time, his horizontal level in all cases it is lower than the main one (at the upper ridge).

Valleys are joint elements of a mortise ridge.

Crossed ridges are also used to create hip roofs. This variety has intersections and is always located horizontally. For this reason, they are often confused with roofing hips.

Important points when installing a skate

  • When working, it should be taken into account that for free access of air into the under-roof space, the mounted roof covering should not be connected tightly in the ridge.
  • The ridge is installed at the final stage of roof installation work. Ventilation material is laid to protect the ridge beams (boards) from moisture that can penetrate during rain or snow. Protective layer It also performs another function: it prevents insects and small birds from entering the attic. It can be created from a special sealant, glass, mineral wool, or some other materials.
  • It is necessary to ensure that the space located under the ridge strip is not tightly filled. – otherwise it will be disrupted or even eliminated natural ventilation. This can happen due to the filling of the ridge space polyurethane foam or sealed material that prevents free air circulation. This problem often appears in the case of mansard-type roofs.

Accessories

Having decided on the choice of material for the roof, you need to purchase the roofing covering, the ridge itself, components and fasteners. The main components of the ridge element are:

  • ridge ventilation strip;
  • ventilation tape;
  • holder for lightning rod;
  • sealant;
  • ridge seal;
  • some other aeroelements.

All of them are necessary for durable installation and fastening of the ridge to the roof, ensuring its high functionality. Only under this condition will the ridge be able to protect the joints and provide good ventilation.

What will you need for work?

All necessary tools and equipment should be prepared in advance. To install the ridge you will need:

  • a ladder with triangular projections at the upper ends for attachment to the roof;
  • level;
  • roulette;
  • special screwdriver for roofing screws (with a special head shape);
  • lace;
  • metal scissors;
  • drill with different attachments.

Determining the height of the ridge

When installing a roof, a mandatory point is to determine the height of the ridge for further calculation of the amount of building materials required to create the rafter system and roofing. The necessary calculations are carried out in accordance with the rules of geometry after determining the angle of inclination of the roof. A special table has been developed that can be used for quick calculations if there is data on the width of the building and the slope angle.

Let’s assume the width of the building is 8 m and the roof slope is 40 degrees. To calculate the height of the ridge, use the following scheme:

the width of the house is multiplied by the coefficient

The result is the height of the ridge element from the ceiling. In the case of the example given, it will be 3.35 (4 x 0.839).

Types of roofing and ridges

The method of constructing a ridge girder is directly dependent on the type of roofing. Therefore, it is necessary to think about installing the ridge already at the stage of choosing a roof covering.

When performing roofing based on asbestos cement sheets you need to purchase commercially available special shaped elements in the form of a gutter, laid on boards or ridge beams and attached to them using slate nails with a rubber gasket. It is imperative to waterproof wooden roofing elements. Before installing slate-based ridge elements, the ridge beam should be covered with roofing felt tape.

Ridge elements made of asbestos cement can be incorrect geometric shape– namely: they are slightly narrower at one end. This end must be covered with the subsequent slate element. In this case, the overlap is at least 7 cm. An anti-wind bracket is used to strengthen the first element.

If the roofing material is clay tiles, you also need to purchase ridge parts in the form of gutters and corners.

When creating roof ridges using ceramic-based fragments, you must use lime mortar and wire (used for fastening).

Construction of a ridge for a roof made of roll materials carried out by sticking these same materials. The method of laying the panels is determined by the slope of the roof slopes. If the slope is small, the panels are laid parallel to the ridge with a significant overlap. With a large slope angle, the panels must be laid parallel to the drain. When installing a ridge, it is recommended to lay the rolled materials in a direction perpendicular to the ridge. In this case, the minimum overlap of the sheets should be 25 cm.

If you choose a roofing covering based on galvanized iron, as a rule, you need to make the ridges yourself, although it should be noted that hardware stores also offer ready-made elements up to 2 meters in size.

If you make your own ridge, you should determine the exact parameters of the roof. After that from steel sheet with a galvanized surface, cut out the desired strip, which is given an angular shape. In this case, a wooden hammer (mall) is used. The use of a conventional metal hammer is impractical, since it damages the zinc coating, which leads to the ridge being unprotected from moisture and its rapid deterioration.

Rules for installing a ridge element

The installation of the ridge begins after the installation of the roofing covering on the surface of the slopes is completed. Ridge piece elements are lifted to the place of installation using a winch or rope.

  1. To secure the ridge elements, a special beam is first installed, the minimum cross-section of which should be 70x90 mm. Then 2 sheathing bars are attached to it on both sides. To facilitate the work of laying parts, you can attach special brackets to the central beam and hang specially designed walking bridges on them.
  2. The ridge beam is attached to the central one. For ease of fastening, the top edge of the ridge beam should be rounded. Thanks to this shape, a much stronger fit will also be ensured for all ridge elements used. To prevent rotting and the development of fungus and mold, the ridge beam should be upholstered along its entire length with ordinary roofing felt material or a sealant intended for this purpose. Such prevention significantly extends the service life of the ridge element and the entire roofing structure. When installing the ridge and other ridge parts of metal tiles, they must be fastened directly to the ridge beam. Screws are used for this.

To prevent the process of rotting of the ridge beam, the areas covered with a layer of roofing material must be additionally treated: apply a layer of enamel or oil paint.

The ridge ceiling is formed using two ridges laid on adjacent slopes. Then the longer (main) ridge is fixed - it should be extended by 10 mm.

The remaining skates are installed in such a way that their widened ends are directed towards the pediment.

Skate attachment process

As an example, we can take the fastening of a ridge to a metal tile roof. To ensure its functionality and reliability, the following actions must be taken:

  • At the same time, holes must be drilled on both skates.
  • The hole should also be on the flat side of the block.
  • Two holes must also be drilled on the line of the timber hump located longitudinally.
  • During work, it is necessary to ensure that the holes on the lapels pass through the crests of the waves of the material.
  • The process of installing the ridge must begin from one of the ends, installing the element on top of the end strips.
  • The edge of the ridge should extend outward by at least 2-3 cm.
  • The process of installing a flat ridge requires the indispensable joining of all parts with an overlap of 10 cm or more. It is also possible to use tin technology.
  • When connecting the parts of a semicircular ridge, the joining is carried out along the stamping lines.
  • The specific location for strengthening the ridge board and the methods of fastening are directly dependent on the slope angle of the roof.
  • To avoid possible errors, during the installation of the sheathing, you should model the assembly of the future ridge, while paying attention to how the model of the ridge strip and the roof slope angle are combined.
  • Then you need to adjust the angle of the ridge strip to the angle of the roof slope. For this purpose, you can bend and unbend the skate (as necessary).

One important point: the ridge mounting flanges in a free state must correspond to the slope angles of the roof slopes.

  • In many cases, it may be necessary to additionally install a ridge board. It is installed above the level of the top sheathing board, while an 80-mm gap is maintained between adjacent slopes and the ridge boards of these slopes, which ensures ventilation of the under-roof space. The ridge board should be 10-15 cm thicker than the step sheathing boards.
  • The final fastening of the ridge strip is carried out by tightening it using self-tapping screws to the highest areas of the metal tile sheets. The pitch of the screws should be within 0.8 m.
  • To prevent snow from getting under the ridge, an aerial roller should be installed between the ridge strip and the metal tile.

CONCLUSIONS:

  • A ridge is a horizontal edge at the highest point of the roof, formed by the junction of the roof slopes.
  • Installation of the ridge is the last and one of the most important stages of roofing work.
  • During installation, attention must be paid to making accurate calculations of the height of this part and ensuring good ventilation of the roofing pie and attic space.
  • The ridge is made from materials used as roofing.
  • There are several types of ridges: they are used for different roofs.
  • For free access of air, the roof covering should not be tightly connected at the ridge.
  • After choosing the material for the roof, you need to purchase a ridge, components and fasteners.
  • You should first prepare the tools and equipment for work.
  • It is necessary to determine the height of the ridge.
  • The method of installing the ridge is determined by the type of roofing.
  • The construction of the ridge begins after installation of the roof covering.
  • In the process of attaching the skate, it is necessary to follow the sequence of actions.
  • The specific location for strengthening the ridge board and the methods of fastening depend on the roof slope angle.

See below for detailed video instructions on how to attach the ridge to the roof.

A roof ridge is an edge formed at the meeting point of the roof slopes. The technology for installing roofing materials is such that this area remains open after completion of the work.
Ridge connection without additional protective measures such as open window for the penetration of moisture, cold air, small birds and insects, despite the fact that we're talking about just a gap 2-3 cm thick. This article will tell you how to make a roof ridge correctly.

Features of the ridge connection

Arrangement of the ridge connection is the last stage of roof construction, however, its durability and reliability directly depend on this event. To make a roof ridge protected from moisture and wind with your own hands, you need to know the main tasks assigned to it:

  1. Protection against moisture penetration. A section of the roof that is not protected by roofing material allows moisture to enter, leading to rotting and destruction of the rafter system.
  2. Providing air circulation. A correctly installed roof ridge performs the functions ventilation gap, through which heated air saturated with water vapor exits. In the absence of ventilation, water from steam settles on the elements of the rafter frame and the inner surface of the roofing material, leading to their premature deterioration.
  3. Protection from small birds and insects. If you have not yet become a homeowner, but are just getting ready, then you will be surprised how often birds make their nests in the roof, getting there through minor cracks, not to mention insects.
  4. Giving a finished look. Among other things, the skate plays a role decorative element, decorating the roof, giving it a finished elegant look. The aesthetic potential of hand-made ridge profiles is limited, but purchased models delight with a variety of shapes and colors.

Note! Roofing specialists recommend purchasing the profile at the same time as the material for covering the slopes. To achieve an accurate color match, you should look for options from one manufacturer. Profiles for arranging a ridge connection are produced in the form of additional elements, the length of which is 2 m. To determine how many parts are needed, you need to add 10-15% to the length of the roof along the eaves for overlap and fitting.

Structure and profile forms

The roof ridge is a profile made of galvanized metal, asbestos cement, and ceramics. There are three forms of such products: simple, oval and with a U-shaped rib:

If you have no experience in construction, then the most obvious option is to install a simple ridge beam. To make it, you need to purchase a metal corner with a width of mounting shelves of 40-50 cm for better waterproofing.

Profile types

The choice of profile for arranging a ridge with your own hands is based not on aesthetic tastes, but on the practical tasks that it must perform. Therefore, ridge elements are selected depending on the material with which the roof is covered:

To make a roof ridge with your own hands, you should purchase a special ventilation tape, roofing material or a highly diffuse membrane for waterproofing, roofing screws, a screwdriver, and a construction stapler.

Installation process

The quality of installation of the ridge profile directly affects the effectiveness of protection against moisture penetration and air circulation. To avoid making mistakes, follow the following recommendations from roofing professionals:

  1. When laying the roofing, step back a few centimeters from the top of the slope so that an auxiliary bar is installed on the ridge beam, increasing the height of the ridge.
  2. Using a strip of highly diffuse membrane, film or roofing felt, waterproof the edge between the slopes. Fix the waterproofing layer with a stapler and silicone sealant.
  3. Take the ventilation tape, remove from the adhesive side protective film and stick along the ridge on both slopes. It is necessary so that air can freely escape from under the roof, ventilating the rafter system and preventing it from rotting. For a powerful organization forced ventilation use special ridge aerators made of plastic.
  4. Start installing the ridge profile from one of the ends of the house, moving it forward 2-3 cm beyond the roof. Having placed the first profile segment, check whether it lies level and fix it using a screwdriver and roofing screws. The pitch between screws is 30-40 cm.
  5. Place the second part on the first with an overlap of 7-10 cm, place it evenly and secure it. Continue installation until you reach the other end of the roof. Place the last section of the roofing profile 2-3 cm outside the roof. To adjust and cut to size, use metal scissors, a hacksaw or a grinder.
  6. Insert special plugs into the end holes of the ridge profile if they are supplied with the model you have chosen.

Note! Construction stores offer ridge profiles suitable for different angles roof slopes. Therefore, when going for a part to decorate a ridge, accurately determine the slope and consult with the seller whether the part you like is suitable for you.

Video instruction

The ridge is the upper horizontal edge formed by the intersection of the roof slopes. The ridge also includes additional elements attached to the rib. This is the highest point of the roof, through which ventilation of the roofing system and the under-roof space occurs.

When talking about installing a ridge, as a rule, we also mean installing its purlin, which connects the slopes of the rafter system.

The ridge is primarily an element of gable roofs. However, it is also necessary when installing roofs of a more complex configuration - for example, a broken hipped roof.

IN asymmetrical roofs offset skates are used. Their design is a rather complex process.

When installing the ridge, special attention must be paid to two main points:

  • make the correct height calculation;
  • ensure good ventilation of the roof and attic space.

Skate function

The main purpose of the ridge is to close the upper edges of the roofing and firmly connect the slopes.

The main function of the skate– ensuring free circulation of air in the under-roof space to remove excess moisture, prevent the formation of condensation and, accordingly, protect the entire roof structure from rotting.

Performing this function is possible provided that the work on the construction of the ridge is carried out correctly. It is necessary to choose the right material and additional components: this is important for high-quality installation work, preventing leaks and normalizing humidity levels.

The ridge also protects the roofing from damage due to precipitation, strong wind and gives the structure additional strength.

Types of skates and some principles of their design

The second name for the ridge is roofing strip. It can be made from the same materials that are used to produce roofing coverings:

  • ceramic tiles;
  • metal tiles;
  • galvanized steel;
  • slate, etc.

Depending on the shape, skates are divided into the following types:

  • embossed;
  • curly;
  • conical;
  • semicircular;
  • rib;
  • corner.

When installing this part, it is necessary to keep in mind that the roof covering should not be tightly connected at the ridge - otherwise it will block access to the air mass into the under-roof space.

Installation of the ridge is the last stage of roofing work, at which ventilation material is laid to protect the under-roof space from the penetration of insects and small birds.

The ridge also prevents rainwater and moisture from getting on the ridge beams and boards.

The protective layer can be a special sealant, glass or mineral wool, or some other materials.

It is necessary to ensure that free space under the bar is not tightly filled: this may disrupt or eliminate natural air circulation. Therefore, the ridge space should not be sealed with sealed materials or treated with polyurethane foam.

Types of roofing and ridges

You should think about the design of the ridge already at the stage of choosing a roofing covering, since the technology for its installation is directly dependent on the type of roofing material.

When using asbestos-cement slate, you should also purchase special shaped elements that allow you to independently install the roof ridge. They are made in the form of a gutter, laid on boards or ridge beams and attached to them with special slate nails with a rubber gasket.

Care should also be taken to waterproof the wooden parts: before laying the slate-based ridge elements, the ridge beam must be covered with roofing felt tape. Ridge elements made of asbestos cement come in irregular geometric shapes: slightly narrowed at one end. The next slate element should cover this end. The overlap is at least 7 cm. The first element is secured using a wind clamp.

Manufacturers of clay tiles also provided ridge elements in the form of gutters or corners.

When installing a ridge in fragments based on ceramics, lime mortar and wire are used to secure it.

In the case of installing a ridge on a roof made of rolled materials, the installation of the ridge is carried out by gluing these materials. The canvases are located depending on the slope angle of the roof slopes.

A small angle requires laying panels with a significant overlap parallel to the ridge. As the roof slope increases, the panels must be positioned parallel to the drain.

If galvanized iron is used as a roofing material, the production of ridges is usually carried out independently. You can also purchase ready-made items. Their length is 2 meters.

Before you start making your own ridge, you should take the necessary measurements of the roof. The plank is cut from galvanized sheet. Giving it the required angular shape is done using a mallet ( wooden hammer). A regular metal hammer is not suitable because it will damage the zinc coating, leaving the sheet metal exposed to moisture.

Additional components

Skate components are required during its installation. They expand the purpose of this roofing element and help improve its functionality.

The main ones:

  • ventilation ridge tiles;
  • ventilation tape;
  • lightning rod holder;
  • some other aeroelements.

During the installation of components, some technical accessories are used:

  • Semicircular skates– installed at the junction of slopes.
  • Rectangular skates- used in the device pitched roof with metal tile covering; have increased protective properties and have an aesthetic appearance.
  • Stubs– necessary during the installation of additional semicircular roofing elements; designed to close the joints of slopes.
  • Narrow skates– made of metal tiles; don't have any special functionality– rather serve as a decorative element.
  • Snow holder– one of the most important ridge elements that contributes to the reduction snow load and preventing snow from sliding. The part must withstand significant weight, so it requires strong fixation. Made from a variety of materials.
  • Wind bar is a component accessory, covers sheets of roofing material from the end side, protects from the effects of rain, other precipitation, and wind.
  • Cornice– will perform a protective function and is an important element for a wooden cornice board. Its installation is carried out under a hydro- and heat-insulating coating.
  • groove It is a component part that covers the joints of the slopes.
  • Universal gasket- This special coating, the function of which is to protect the roof structure from excess moisture and the influence of other adverse environmental factors.
  • Connecting to a wall is structural element, serves to close cracks at the joints of slopes, protects walls from negative impact rainwater, snow, etc.
  • Self-tapping screws– with their help, the ridges are attached to the roofing.

An important point to take into account: additional ridge elements must be made of the same material as the roofing, be the same color and have fasteners for reliable and durable installation.

Calculation of ridge height

To correctly calculate the height of the ridge, you need to know the run parameters. The ridge girder is the beam in the center truss structure made of metal, wood or reinforced concrete. The skate rests precisely on this detail.

The height of the ridge depends on the angle of the slopes and the material for their design.

After selecting the material, you should proceed directly to the calculations and subsequent installation of the ridge.

Two pieces of ridge tiles are laid on the upper edge. They must rest on the roof slopes. After this, the length of the segment between the inner and upper edge of the fragment is measured from the narrowest end.

To others necessary moment is to measure the distance between the bend point of the fastening line and top part ridge beam holder.

There is a special table of coefficients that is used to calculate the height of the ridge if data on the roof slope angle and the width of the building is available (Table N1). For example: the slope angle is 40 degrees, and the width of the house is 8 meters. The height of the ridge is calculated according to the following formula: half the width of the house is multiplied by a factor, resulting in the height of the ridge (H):

In this case, the height of the ridge from the ceiling should be 3.35 meters.

Skate device

After all necessary calculations The fasteners are installed and a special mounting cord is pulled for the correct location of the ridge girder.

Instead of a cord, you can use regular fishing line (it must be of sufficient thickness).

The ridge beam is installed in holders and fastenings. Fastening is done using stainless or galvanized steel nails.

A mandatory aspect of the ridge installation is the presence of lightweight side tiles, which are intended for the final covering of the ridge girder after completion of work.

To prevent the penetration of moisture, steam and ensure a normal temperature background in the under-roof space, it is necessary to create a waterproofing and heat-insulating layer.

At correct implementation During installation, all seams and joints formed during the covering of the slopes are completely covered with parts of the ridge girder.

It is also necessary to take care of creating a ventilation compartment: its absence leads to the formation and accumulation of condensation, even with waterproofing installed according to all the rules.

Ventilation ducts can be made independently or purchased at a specialized store. They are mounted using special fastenings or adhesive mixture.

The ventilation duct is glued exclusively to dry and clean roofing material, at average air temperature.

After all of the above work has been completed, installation of the ridge girder begins.

The optimal choice of material for its manufacture is a special ridge tile, which at the same time serves to decorate the roof ridge.

Installation of tiles must begin on the leeward side to prevent precipitation from penetrating and blowing through the joints of the material during strong winds.

First of all, you need to install the clamps, then lay the tiles on them and nail them with galvanized nails or screw them with self-tapping screws.

To reduce the wind load on the ridge and the roof as a whole, it is necessary to install so-called anti-winds, which are diagonal connections, in each of the slopes.

Ventilation device

Before installing the ridge itself, it must be provided with sound, heat, waterproofing and high-quality ventilation. Essentially speaking, the purpose of the skate is good ventilation roof structure and under-roof space.

Proper installation of a ventilation system includes the following actions:

  1. After completing the installation of the rafter system, a waterproofing membrane is laid on the rafter legs in the transverse direction. The seams are glued using connecting tape, while maintaining a 15-centimeter overlap.
  2. Counter battens and sheathing are installed along the rafter logs.
  3. The roof sheathing is carried out in the required manner.

In a word, high-quality ventilation directly depends on waterproofing, which retains moisture and prevents its penetration into the layer thermal insulation material And wooden parts floors.

For good ventilation, the distance created by the sheathing is also important: thanks to the unimpeded movement of the air mass, moisture penetrating inside quickly dries out.

The ventilation hole is also located in the ridge itself. Under it, a layer of waterproofing coating is overlapped.

Thanks to the presence of the hole, air penetrates inside and helps to ventilate excess moisture and steam.

If it is impossible to create a ventilation gap in the attic, end windows are created, which also help prevent dampness.

Special openings for the entry of air mass under the roof are also installed in the lower part of the eaves.

You can additionally protect your roof and walls from moisture and water using eaves with a large overhang.

If the length of the rafters is insufficient, a roof fillet is mounted - a board or beam for extension rafter leg in order to create an overhang.

The main advantages of using a filly are:

  • possibility of use in construction wood material shorter length;
  • creating a lighter rafter system;
  • simplified work with short fillies compared to rafter beams considerable length;
  • the possibility of replacing them during repairs without dismantling the entire roof structure;
  • fillies can become a decorative element that improves the exterior of a building.
