How to make flowers for the tree of happiness with your own hands. How to decorate a topiary pot. Pot and methods of attaching the trunk

The art of topiary came to us from Ancient Egypt. In those days, the talent of giving plants unusual geometric shapes was highly valued. An example of this is such a wonder of the world as the Gardens of Babylon.

Today, topiary is a small tree made from natural and artificial materials. We will share decor ideas with you and tell you what you can use to make a beautiful tree yourself.

Secrets for Beginners

Having created a tree of happiness, you can both decorate your own home with it and present it as a gift for a wedding, housewarming, or anniversary. The product sizes are different, depending on your preferences and range from 15 to 50 cm.

Important! Topiary has a purely decorative function. And it depends on your imagination whether you will make a small original tree in the shape of a heart, or unusual models from shells.

The simplest available materials for making topiary are as follows:

  • pasta;
  • money;
  • branches;
  • coffee beans;
  • napkins;
  • candies;
  • cotton pads.

Advice! A popular option is a money tree. It is made as a gift using small bills. It symbolizes wealth, luck and business success. Suitable for placement in the kitchen or any other room.

Usually the money tree is made in mini versions for installation on window sills. Also, such a gift can be in a small pot on the floor, which is placed near a coffee table or sofa in the living room.

How to make topiary with your own hands

If you decide to decorate the house yourself, then before making the composition, consider the design of the main components:

  • bases for topiary;
  • crowns;
  • trunk;
  • stands.

Suitable bases include paper, old newspapers, polystyrene foam, polyurethane foam, and a children's ball. What to make it from is up to you.

Advice! Experienced craftswomen use foam plastic for shapes in the form of letters, numbers, and hearts.

You can simply make a trunk from strong wire, branches, and plastic tubes. When choosing what to make a topiary trunk from, consider the size of the future product. If it is a small model, use a simple pencil; if it is a floor model, use one even, thick branch.

The crown is the part of the craft that will attract attention the most. Suitable materials include paper, polymer clay, beads, buttons, and shells.

Depending on the size of the product and the idea, an ordinary flower pot, a toy bucket, or a flat wooden board will serve as a stand. Decorate it with fabric, lace, decoupage or paint it. How to do it is up to you.

Advice! An ordinary cup that you no longer use in everyday life is perfect for a stand.

Step-by-step instructions for crafts

For those who are carried away by this wonderful idea, we will tell you how to make a beautiful topiary step by step. Before you start crafting, carefully think through the idea of the future tree and prepare all the necessary materials for the trunk, crown and stand.

When creating your topiary, follow this sequence:

  • prepare the crown. To make it, use scrap materials or specially stored shells, beads, and seed beads. For a non-standard crown shaped like a number or letter, cut out the required shape from foam plastic. Be sure to make a hole for the barrel;
  • prepare the barrel. Depending on the idea, use branches, sushi sticks, or plastic straws. If you are planning to make a large outdoor topiary, which you will place in the garden or outside in a private house, use wooden sticks wrapped with twine or varnished in the desired color. Place the crown on the trunk;

Advice! If the crown is round, you just need to put the base on the trunk. If your topiary has a non-standard appearance, additionally secure it with glue.

  • stand. Use pots or planters. First place polystyrene foam in the pot and fill it with weak cement mortar or alabaster, level it and dry it. This will serve as a reliable frame for the craft.

Advice! Since novice craftswomen do not always guess the proportions of the solution, experienced needlewomen advise using the consistency of liquid sour cream - too thick a mass will not fill the space between the pot and the foam.

This interesting craft can easily be made with children to decorate the garden or any room in the house.

Trunk

Wooden branches, Chinese chopsticks, long skewers, pencil, wire, thin tube - any durable object of straight or curved shape, suitable in length and diameter for a specific design, is used as a trunk for the tree of happiness.

The choice of trunk for topiary is not limited, but the weight of the crown should be taken into account so that the branch does not break.

Pot and methods of attaching the trunk

Stability of the base, the ability to strengthen the trunk, a shape suitable for the crown design - the main criteria when choosing a container in which to A the tree of happiness grows. In addition, the shape must correspond to the selected crown design; the pot is decorated depending on the design of the specific product.

In Feng Shui practice, the tree of happiness in the home is a symbol of prosperity, abundance and wealth. In addition, a topiary created independently is an original gift, a sign of respect and love, a real surprise for connoisseurs of handmade crafts.

Excursion into history
The etymology of the word “Topiary” comes from the ancient art of cutting garden trees and shrubs - “Topiar” (Topiary material from Wikipedia). From Latin topiaria- gardening art, actively developing in Europe since the times of the Roman Empire. Shrub sculpture was carried out by specially trained slaves - topiaries.

Topiary is a small decorative tree with a rounded crown. This method of decorating garden vegetation came into our culture from Ancient Egypt, where they first began to give trees an unusual shape. Over the centuries, the craft has grown into a decorative art, the fruits of which are increasingly found in modern interiors. At the same time, you can make a tree of happiness with your own hands in literally one free evening.

Topiary with flowers made of corrugated paper

Topiaries with cute crepe paper buds are often used to decorate wedding or birthday parties. Many brides even prefer to use artificial analogues of flowers for a bouquet, because such details will definitely not spoil at the most crucial moment, and besides, they are not at all inferior to natural peonies or roses.

So, to make crafts with roses, stock up on the following materials: corrugated paper of the selected shade - for the inflorescence; scissors; glue; pencil; green tape for the trunk; strong thread (can be replaced with small wire); ruler; Styrofoam; a stick for the trunk (for example, a Japanese chopstick, a pencil, a branch); newsprint or other thick paper; pot for indoor plants.

To get a standard size topiary, prepare 30–40 flowers. Cut strips 3–4 cm wide and 35–45 cm long for each rose. Bend the ribbon lengthwise by a third, and then wrap the top section at an acute angle and repeat the turns three times - this is how you form the middle of the rose. Continue making turns until you have twisted the entire strip. Secure the tip with glue, and fasten the lower part of the flower with wire.

The base sphere can be purchased ready-made or formed from newsprint. Wrap the newspaper ball tightly with thick thread. Please note that the paper blank must be larger than the size you want to obtain, as the thread will significantly reduce it. Glue the flowers securely to the sphere.

Take your chosen stem stick and wrap it in twine or green duct tape. You can use corrugated paper by cutting long strips out of it, applying glue to the inside and wrapping it around the base. Place the ball on the barrel or secure it with glue.

Use polystyrene foam or alabaster as a primer. In the latter case, fill it, leaving 2–4 cm from the edge, and insert the barrel. In this case, the stick must be held until the solution becomes dry. Decorate the finished ground base with fabric, tinsel or beads - as you like. Ready!

Topiary made from coffee beans

Coffee topiary is a wonderful gift that will decorate any corner of your home. It is environmentally friendly, beautiful and, moreover, also has an incomparable delicious aroma. It is not difficult to make - follow the basic instructions. Additionally, you will need 150–300 g of coffee beans, brown acrylic paint for coating and, if desired, decor. All other materials and tools are standard, as for any other topiary.

You can perform the classic version without intricate shapes and decorations, the result will be elegant and laconic. But if your heart yearns for creativity, we offer several original ideas:

— The craft can take the form of a flowering tree and become an excellent present for a girl, mother or teacher;

— Try decorating the tree with dried fruits and placing it in the dining area;

- Use summer motifs and decorate the work with small birds and butterflies;

- Create a New Year's composition - a cute coffee tree. You can make the base yourself from thick paper or purchase a ready-made one;

— A man will certainly appreciate a gift in the form of a money tree. It is enough to glue coins to the ball, and a zipper around them, and decorate the remaining space with coffee beans;

— If you are thinking about a present for Valentine's Day or a wedding anniversary, make a topiary in the shape of a heart;

— A cup hanging over a saucer from which grains “spill” looks very impressive. It’s not difficult to do - instead of a stick, use wire, foam or hot glue.

Topiary made of pine cones

Another idea for eco-decor that is popular today is pine cone topiary. It will harmoniously complement the autumn or winter composition, and it is quite simple to perform.

In addition to the standard set of materials, prepare cones, pins, and dried moss. Rinse the buds thoroughly and dry for 10 minutes in an oven preheated to 350 degrees. Prepare the trunk by painting it or wrapping it with twine. Fill the pot with mounting mixture or chopped floral foam, fix the trunk in it.

The sphere can be coated with brown paint. Use pins or hot glue to attach the pine cones to the ball. They must be fastened close to each other. Large parts need to be glued first, the rest - in descending order of size. Attach the ball to the barrel.

Cover the improvised soil with moss or other material that you like. If desired, complete the composition with additional decorations.

By the New Year holidays, you can also create an impromptu conical-shaped Christmas tree.

Flower topiary using quilling technique

Topiary made using this technique turns out to be very cheerful and cute. It will complement the interior of a nursery or serve as an interesting decor in the dining room or kitchen. Try it yourself, it's not difficult at all.

So, you will need: thick, bright colored paper in various shades; a quilling device (if you don’t have one on hand, use a toothpick or a needle stuck into a wine cork); spherical base; scissors; a flower pot; stick for the trunk; glue (PVA and heat gun); moss or other filler to cover the “soil”; chopped foam; ribbons for decoration (optional).

Cut colored paper into wide (one color) and narrow (different shade) strips. Cut wide parts along the edges, forming a fringe. Glue narrow elements to the edge of each strip. Lubricate a thin strip with glue and use your chosen tool to twist it into a tight spiral. Do the same with the wide strip. Remove the craft from the tool.

Repeat the algorithm for the remaining stripes in other colors. Unfold the fringe and you will get lovely flowers.

Take a ball and use a heat gun to secure the flowers on it so that there are no voids left. Coat the pot with hot glue and place the foam in it. Cut a hole in the foam for the barrel, coat it with glue and place the barrel in it.

Make a hole in the crown and place it on a stick-trunk, pre-lubricated with glue. Decorate the foam soil with prepared moss or other decorative element. If desired, you can paint the pot in a bright color and also tie the trunk with a beautiful ribbon.

Shell topiary

A topiary made of shells will perfectly complement a marine-style interior. To make it, prepare the following materials: a foam ball for the base; various shells; wire; pot for stand; cardboard; twine or thread; scissors and a hot glue gun.

To make a topiary crown, prepare: a foam ball, shells and white sisal. Using a glue gun, glue the entire surface of the sphere and wrap it with sisal. Prepare the shells and then attach them to the sisal with glue, leaving small gaps. This way you should cover the entire surface of the ball.

For the barrel you will need wire, thread or twine, scissors and a glue gun. Shape the wire into the desired shape and wrap it tightly with thread or twine. You can make several trunks using different colored threads and different bends.

To make a topiary pot, prepare a clay pot, foam plastic, cardboard or paper, ready-made trunks, scissors and a heat gun. To secure the trunks, place foam in the pot. Then secure it with hot glue. Glue the finished crown to the trunk and stick it into the foam placed in the pot. Glue thoroughly using a heat gun. For strength, fill the empty space in the pot with crumpled paper, glue it and cover it with a circle of cardboard. Later you can cover it with sisal or small shells.

Attach two shells to each other and place a “pearl” in them. This way you will get a wonderful decoration for the pot. Next, decorate the base of the pot as you wish. Using a satin ribbon, you can make bright accents and strew the crown with the same “pearls”.

  • Wire cutters;
  • Cardboard;
  • Hook;
  • Scotch;
  • Wire;
  • Pencil;
  • Cement or plaster;
  • Scissors;
  • Brown and green fabric;
  • Pot;
  • Red and brown threads.

Stages of work:

  • Using wire cutters, we cut off six wire blanks of 30 cm, five of 25 cm, and twenty-two of 4 cm;
  • Attach 3 small ones to a large wire branch with tape. We make several preparations. The branches can be wrapped in fabric, such as velvet or fleece;

  • Cut strips 2 cm wide from brown fabric. We wrap the branch blanks (several pieces) with them, leaving 3 cm free at the bottom. We fix the ends of the material with glue;
  • We collect the blanks into a single “apple tree”. We cut a strip of 3 cm from the fabric, wrap it around the fabric and branches connected to each other. We also secure the fabric ends with glue;

  • To make the decorative apple tree further, we place it in a container with a narrow neck. If such containers cannot be found, then to fix the “plant”, pour cement or gypsum mortar into the container. We straighten the branches and begin to decorate our craft;
  • Now let’s cut leaves of different sizes from green material and scorch their edges over the flame, not bringing them too close to it so that they don’t spread;

  • We glue the leaves onto the branches and begin to create fruits, which are made from. Cut out 2 circles from cardboard, 3 cm in diameter. Draw a smaller circle inside and cut it out, we get 2 cardboard rings;
  • We connect them into a single piece and wrap a red thread around it using a hook. The yarn should completely “hide” the workpiece. We cut it from the outer edge, lay a brown thread and use it to tighten the resulting pompom;

  • We cut out leaves from green material and glue them onto a brown thread;
  • We hang the finished “fruits” on the branches. You can also decorate the pot as you wish.

Volumetric tree on the wall

This unique 3D decoration can be made with your own hands on the wall (and even on part of the ceiling) without any problems. To create a real masterpiece, it is not necessary to have the knowledge of a sculptor or artist.

Important: This decor requires a lot of space.

You will need:

  • Master OK;
  • Bucket;
  • Marker and scissors;
  • Acrylic paints and brushes;
  • Scotch;
  • A bag of dry plaster;
  • A large sheet of cellophane film.

Progress:

  • Let's draw a contour mirror image on the cellophane film with a marker, and when we cut out the drawn middle, we should get a stencil;
  • We stick it on the wall with tape;
  • Pour water into a bucket and spread the plaster;
  • Using a trowel, carefully fill the empty stencil space;
  • Remove the film after the mixture has dried;
  • We apply several more layers of gypsum, making the last one round;
  • When the solution has dried thoroughly, paint the sculpture with acrylic-based paints.

You can choose a wide variety of palettes. A “natural” image would look great in the living room, or a fabulous tree, unusually painted, on the wall in a children’s room.

Decorative tree made from branches

To decorate the interior of your home, you can make large artificial trees with flowers.

Necessary materials:

  • Hot glue gun;
  • Twigs;
  • Sea pebbles;
  • Square flowerpot;
  • Decorative flowers (can be paper);
  • A piece of foam.

How to make a decorative tree yourself from ordinary branches:

  • We fill the bottom of the flowerpot with sea pebbles and put polystyrene foam on them, and insert the prepared branch into it;
  • Sprinkle it again with sea stones for good stability, insert moss on top;
  • Now we decorate the branch. To do this, we glue decorative flowers randomly to a branch using a glue gun;
  • After completing this procedure, such a decorative craft will rightfully serve as a decoration for your home or apartment.

On the Internet you can find many photos of trees made by yourself, choose the option that suits you and create your own masterpiece based on it. For another interesting idea for creating an artificial tree, watch the video below.

How can you make a base ball with your own hands? What do the frames for some types of topiary look like? Is plaster always used? Is it possible to buy a topiary kit at a craft store? Which fittings are better? Topiary masters are familiar with these questions. And beginners should give a detailed answer to them.

The basis for topiary is most often a ball around which the crown will be formed. The basis can be done in different ways. If we are talking about how to construct such a ball with your own hands, then two methods are generally available and simple.

Methods for creating a base ball:

  • Papier mache. Papier-mâché is a technique that is part of our set of skills, learned in childhood during a labor lesson. You need to take paper, glue, and an object whose shape you want to eventually get. You take a children's plastic ball and layer paper on it with glue. The more layers of “paper + glue”, the stronger the product will be. Then you cut the structure in half, remove the original object, and once again fix it with layers of paper and glue.
  • A lump of newspapers. Also the old-fashioned way. You can take newspapers and crumple them until you have a spherical object in your palm. It will be made heavier by glue, which should not be applied in large quantities. And then you wrap the newspaper wad with threads so that you get a ball. It is advisable to cover the lump with something on top, which is easy to paint. For example, masking tape.
  • Macroflex or polyurethane foam. The material is sprayed into a plastic bag and after it hardens, any shapes can be cut out of it.

The base ball is also made in other, less popular ways, but these three are still rightfully considered the simplest.

Do-it-yourself topiary trunk: what to make from

The trunk is part of the topiary, which is included in the set of required elements. You can make it yourself, for example, from wire or aluminum cable. This is good because it is easy to give any bend to your trunk using such materials.

How else to make a topiary trunk:

  • Pencils. Like ordinary thin and non-standard thick pencils - why not a trunk for a tree? What you need is to decorate them - paint, tie, glue or weave.
  • Branches. Natural materials make topiary more natural. Therefore, not thick snags, but beautiful strong branches are an excellent trunk for topiary. They can be left in their natural form, or painted, varnished, sprinkled with something, creating a new structure.
  • Sushi chopsticks. If you need to make a straight trunk, these literally improvised materials will help.

And the trunk is beautifully made from old brushes. If you have a whole set of brushes, all you have to do is choose the thickness of the brush you need.

How to make a pot with your own hands: alternative methods

To make topiary, you almost always need a pot, that is, the form where the tree directly “grows”. In a store that sells this kind of goods, you can, of course, buy a whole set of pots. But it’s more pleasant to build it yourself practically from scrap materials.

To make a pot you can use:

  • Plastic milk bottles, lemonade, iced tea, etc. Just cut it as you need, and then it’s just a matter of decoration.
  • Old cups. You can paint them by hand using glue, decorate them with grains and cereals, wrap them with ribbons, etc.
  • Plastic cups. That’s the case when good things don’t go to waste. You wrap it in burlap, tie it with a lace strip, a thin satin ribbon, put a beautiful button in the middle with glue and, here you have it, a beautiful pot - all with your own hands.

Don’t discount old vases, interestingly shaped ashtrays, sugar bowls and teapots, and other goods that are not worth buying, but it’s better to take something old and give it a new life. Albeit in the form of a topiary pot, but why not?

Basics for creating topiary: what else do you need?

Any beginner has a standard set of questions regarding making topiaries.

A couple of detailed answers will not be superfluous:

  • Why plaster? Of course, not only gypsum can be used. It’s just that this is the simplest and most affordable option, a material that virtually anyone can properly dilute with their own hands. Dilute the plaster, taking into account the following nuances: first pour water into the container, otherwise the plaster, or rather gypsum dust, may get into the lungs. You can immediately paint the plaster with natural dyes - potassium permanganate, iodine, tea leaves, brilliant green. Even ordinary gouache will paint over plaster well.
  • How to turn topiary into an aroma tree? The simple answer is use coffee. But it's really too simple. But buying a set of herbs and spices is a more interesting solution. Vanilla sticks or cinnamon sticks not only decorate the tree, but also give it a sweet aroma.
  • How to get a heart-shaped base? Again, either use the papier-mâché technique or a foam blank. It is possible to build a blank heart using three balls, but it is more difficult. And sometimes they use multilayer cardboard, from which they cut out a heart shape and then decorate it.

As you become more interested in creating topiaries, questions will only increase. Don’t be greedy, share your master classes, tell us what materials you use, reveal the secrets of your craft.
